PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
FERGUS LIONS CLUB - MARGARET MURRAY Welcome to the 41st Fergus Lions Home and Leisure Show and thank you for your attendance and supporting our club programs and members. What inspired those like Bruce Parker (President of the Lions Club in 1977) and Larry Wainwright and 25 others to come together and fundraise for a new Community Sportsplex that we enjoy today? It was Lionism and the dedication to live up to our motto “We Serve”. Where there is a need, there is a Lion; and we have never faltered in our 42 years as the Fergus Lions Club. This Home and Leisure Show is a major part of our fundraising and sale of booths to exhibitors enables us to support programs within the community as well as nationally and internationally. So enjoy the show, support the exhibitors and go to our website, www. ferguslionsclub.org. A lot has changed in the past 40 years, and the concept of a social media was unheard of, but now, you’re invited to “like, follow and share” the Fergus Lions Club on Facebook. Find us at www.facebook. com/ferguslionsclub In 1979, Pink Floyd released “The Wall”, there was snow in the Sahara Dessert and the world-wide launch of the Walkman, but most importantly, the first Fergus Lions Home and Leisure Show was organized. One of our local store owners Graham Wilkin from Ron Wilkin Jewellers, has donated a gift certificate to help us celebrate our 41st year of the Home and Leisure Show. Come by our Fergus Lions booth and fill out a ballot to win $100.00. For the past 41 years, the Home and Leisure Show has been the place to find everything you need under one roof ! From insurance, to windows, to landscaping providers and even rides to the airport, there are lots of local businesses on display. There are many returning exhibitors that have been at the Show for decades plus a few new vendors that we are welcoming for the first time. Stop by and say hello
to these new exhibitors such as Titanium Cookware and Corestar Mechanical Limited. Stop by the Lions booth of Fergus and Marsville and pick up a bag of popcorn for a donation or donate spare change to the Lions Walk for Dog Guides. Pet the Foster Dog puppies being lovingly raised by local families to become Dog Guides. Don’t forget to buy your Fish Fry dinner tickets for Friday night (only $18 for Adults, $8 for Children under 12 years old and available at the Show or call Gary and Lynda Waterhouse at 519-846-2717. This is a quality, full meal, prepared and served by the Fergus Curling Club and an annual event enjoyed by all.
age. Then families can select toys and gift cards for their family members. Our motto, “We Serve” applies no matter the circumstances and we are proud to know that 190 families had a happier Christmas because of the generosity from our community. We would also like to thank all businesses, community partners, families and individuals that contributed specifically to the Toy Drive. We are grateful for all toys donated and for gift cards which are ideal for older children and teenagers. Our proceeds from Photos with Santa in early December at the CW Sportsplex and at I Love Chocolate in downtown Fergus is also donated to the Food Bank, along with a financial donation from

Nine local Lions Clubs have joined together under the banner “Lions for Groves” to raise $200,000 in support of the Diabetes & Patient program at Groves Memorial Hospital. We are thrilled to announce that this year we will have completed our fundraising goal! Fergus Lions are busy all year but especially busy in December, as we, along with the Fergus BIA, the Fergus Optimist and Kinsmen clubs take a lead role in organizing the Santa Parade. In partnership with Reliable Motors, we organize the Toy Drive in support of the CW Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program and help collect food at local grocery stores several times throughout the year. This year, marked our 20th annual Toy Drive. Donations collected at Reliable Motors are then taken to the CW Sportsplex and sorted by
our club. Of course, we also need to honour our very own Fergus Santa for adding a little magic throughout the year. Did you know we also have a Mr. Cupid and instead of handing out toys Norm was giving out red roses on Valentine’s Day. We provided financial support to Lake Joseph Centre (CNIB), to Lions camp Dorset (celebrating 37 years in 2019) that provides on-site dialysis for those requiring that service but also to provide a camp/ cottage respite for their entire family. In Huntsville, we operate Camp Huronda whose mission is “To provide camping experience that fosters the life-long well being of children with diabetes”. Members of the Club collect eye glasses from local optometrists and others and sort and pack them for re-service and distribution
to those in impoverished countries. In keeping with our pledge to Helen Keller in 1925, we are “Knights of the Blind in the Fight Against Blindness” and hold an annual fundraiser named Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides. We welcome Pet Valu as our major sponsor of the Walk. We plan to wrap up the Walk for Dog Guides with a celebration and walk on Sunday, June 9th 2019 at Centre Wellington Sportsplex. Visit the Fergus Lions Club website or follow our event on Facebook for more details. You can also print your own pledge sheet or stop by the Pet Valu on Tower Street South in Fergus to find out how you and your four-legged family members can help. The Dog Guide Training Facility is located in Oakville and costs on average $25,000 to fully train a dog guide. This marvelous dog program has grown over the years and dogs are given, free of charge, to Canadians with physical disabilities and disabilities associated with hearing, autism, hypoglycemic diabetes unawareness, seizures as well as sight. Diabetes is sometimes the cause of blindness and we are also supporters of Diabetes Canada. In November, we host Diabetes Information Booths at FreshCo, Zehrs, New to You and RBC. There are 2-3 Lions, plus a dietician, to provide information, answer questions and collect donations. We acknowledge World Diabetes Day and to help celebrate, we light up a section of the Grand River Walk in all blue lights to “Bring Diabetes to Light”. In 2018, our club raised $637 in donations for Diabetes Canada. Food and good diet is important to health and our club supports the Children’s Foundation – Nutrition Program of Centre and North Wellington. We also provide a lead role in conducting eye screening programs in the elementary schools in Fergus-Elora, as well as Rockwood and Guelph. Education and sports are important to develop our youth and we Lions support the Wellington County
Margaret Murray, President, Fergus Lions Club. Submitted Photo Learning Centre and various youth sports and activities. Last year, we sponsored the inaugural McGinn Brothers Big Game in August in support of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Centre Wellington. The environment is important to our Lions club and we organize two “Adopt a Highway” roadside clean up days in conjunction with local elementary schools and support and maintain two park areas. In more recent years, we have assisted with providing a bench and equipment at Wilkie Park and along the Elora Cataract Trail. On the Grand River, the Arboretum has over 320 trees planted. After 20 years, this project is now complete. The Arboretum is filled with trees in memory of loved ones from the area and we would like to thank those who have contributed in the past. The Fergus Lions Club would like to thank our local media partners the Wellington Advertiser for distributing 48,000 copies of the Home and Leisure Show guide. Thank you to the Grand101FM for always supporting the Fergus Lions Club. Listen to hear about events and activities hosted
by the Fergus Lions Club. In 1977, just as the Fergus Lions Club was starting out, I too was starting a new life in Fergus. For over 42 years, I have been proud to call Fergus home and it’s a been a beautiful place to raise my family. When I joined the Fergus Lions Club in 2006, I was still working full time (and wasn’t yet a grandma). Being a member of the Fergus Lions Club has kept me active and connected to the thriving and caring community that I call home. I hope that you enjoy your time at the Fergus Lions Home and Leisure Show and that you have learned a little bit more of the valuable contributions that our Club makes each year. As President of the Fergus Lions Club, I invite you to attend an upcoming Lions Meeting, which take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at the Masonic Lodge. Get social and connect with me on Facebook at @ FergusLionsClub or feel free to call me. Margaret Murray, 519-8433225

FERGUS ELORA SENIOR TRANS The Fergus Elora Senior Trans is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization having its beginnings in 1985 when the Fergus Lions, Fergus-Elora Rotary Club, and RCL Branch 275 Fergus saw the need in the community and put it together. The mandate of the service is to provide safe, comfortable, affordable transportation to veterans, veterans’ families, seniors or others with special needs and/or financial challenges. It is managed by members from each of the founding clubs and operates strictly by volunteer drivers. The number of volunteer drivers currently limits the operation of the 9-seater van/bus to Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The current fair for a one way trip is $4 and correct change is greatly appreciated. The van can seat up to 9 passengers, not counting the driver, and is equipped with a wheelchair lift with capacity to
transport 2 wheelchair passengers at one time. Drivers are insured to drive the vehicle and help passengers on and off the vehicle. They are not insured to escort passengers from and to their place of residence. The passenger must be able to get to the vehicle and back on their own or with the assistance of persons other than the driver. Vehicle schedules are updated regularly which identify the dates the bus is running and the drivers for these dates, along with the driver’s phone number. A passenger wishing to book a trip will call the respective driver for the date they want at least 24 hours in advance of the trip. It is important to note that, in bad weather, the Fergus Elora Senior Trans does not operate on any days the school buses are cancelled.

FOOD CYCLE RIDE The Food Cycle Ride is an annual family-oriented cycling event that helps put food on the tables and in the lunchboxes of people in need by raising funds for the Centre Wellington Food Bank. Since the inaugural Ride in 2011, riders have raised over $100,000 for the Centre Wellington Food Bank, its continued success a reflection of the dedication of community volunteers and the support of local businesses. Annual participation has increased
steadily from the initial 65 riders who set out on a 40 or 70 km road tour in 2011 to the nearly 200 that rode in 2018. In 2012, the Ride moved its starting location from Fergus to Elora to offer a 20 or 40 km scenic trail route for families and riders who preferred gravel to pavement. While more riders today are choosing to take the trail, an abundance of spandex and competitive cycling spirit can still be found on the road. Cycling teams are encouraged to sign up and engage in friendly competition.

FERGUS AND MARSVILLE LIONS CLUB 2019 WALK FOR DOG GUIDES Charles Schultz, the creator of “Snoopy”, famously said, “Happiness is a warm puppy.” Don’t these puppies (far right) just make you smile? Likely, they were born In the Lions Dog Guide Foundation of Canada Centre in Breslau, Ont. Note their green vests signifying that they are ready (at least two of them appear to be!) to be puppies in training. They will be fostered by volunteers such as Deb, Kristi, Marshall, Tyler, Linda, Betty and many others in our community who will give them months of socializing and basic training so they become comfortable in all public situations before they are ready for specialized training. Come to the Lions Home and Leisure Show May 8, 9 and 10 and you can say hello to some of these puppies and talk with the wonderful volunteers who are raising them. With permission, you can probably pet them as these are puppies in training and not yet a working Dog Guide in full harness whom, as you probably know, you must refrain from petting. At approximately 1 year of age, the puppy in training leaves its foster family and goes to school at the Oakville Training Centre. School is an intensive live in program for the dogs, a “boot camp”
really, as they are trained for about a year, to be a Dog Guide in one of the following programs: Canine Vision Dog Guides for the visually impaired Hearing Ear Dog Guides to alert the deaf to alarms, door bells etc. Service Dogs for those with physical or medical disorders Seizure Response Dogs for those with epilepsy. Autism Assistance Dogs for a child age 3-11 on the autism spectrum Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness.
SUNDAY, JUNE 9 C.W. SPORTSPLEX NOON REGISTRATION 1:OO P.M. WALK After the dogs are trained they are matched with people who have applied for dogs and then those people come to school in Oakville and learn how to live and work with
their own Dog Guide. What a great program! Giving Canadians literally a “new lease on life” by giving them a “new leash on life”: a specially trained dog to help them through their day. If we follow a newborn puppy through the first two years of its life (foster family puppy training, months of school in Oakville and training with its new owner), one understands why it costs approximately $25,000 per Dog Guide to do so. And the Lions Foundation Training Centre in Oakville trains on average about 230 dogs per year. The program is totally free and the need for Dog Guides is great. There are always waiting lists and currently, especially long for Autism Assistance Dogs. For more information about the Dog Guide Program, applying for a dog or fostering a puppy go to www.dogguides.com. Much of the money raised for this worthy registered charity comes from the annual Lions Walk for Dog Guides (sponsored by Pet Valu) that are held in over 300 communities across Canada. For information about all the walks go to www. walkfordogguides.com. Last year a total of approximately 1.3 million dollars was raised
through these Dog Walks. And we are proud to say that participants and their sponsors in the Fergus and Marsville Lions Club 2018 Walk for Dog Guides raised $19,263. And we thank everyone for that! This year our goal is to raise even more...... Wouldn`t it be great to raise enough money ($25,000) to sponsor a Dog Guide...from puppy in its training vest to Guide Dog in its working vest and paired with a person with a special need? What can you do to help? • Get a pledge sheet from the Lions or Dog Guide booth at the 2019 Fergus Home and Leisure Show and ask family and friends to be sponsors (make a donation). Alternatively you can obtain a pledge sheet from the Pet Valu Store in Fergus, any Fergus or Marsville Lion, or by calling one of the Chairs of the Fergus and Marsville Walk for Dog Guides 2019
Committee: Ben Collings or Jeanette Dunke (519-843-3185). • Or you can go to www. walkfordogguides.com and look for “Ontario” then “Fergus”. You can join a team listed there (someone who has a pledge sheet) and make a donation on line or even form your own team. • Pledge sheets and money you have obtained are handed in at the Fergus and Marsville Lions Walk for Dog Guides, Sun., June 9 starting at 12 noon at the Sportplex, but if you cannot be there you can make arrangements with one of the Chairs of the walk noted below. Why is vision screening important? Remove Barriers & Make Life Easier!
Vision screening is an effective and non-invasive way to GUELPH identify children with vision problems. Visual 1710 Bishop St. at Franklin (519) 623-9930 20 Woodlawn Rd. E.potential (519) 824-7789 health is important for a child’s movement, independence, play and learning.
CAMBRIDGE
If left untreated, vision problems may become serious and prevent your child from reaching their full potential.
Public Health is partnering with your local Lion’s Club to provide vision screening for Senior Kindergarten students.
What is vision screening? Vision screening is a series of three short and simple tests to assess: Clarity of vision
The ability to recognize depth
The shape of the eyes (to identify vision errors such as nearsightedness and farsightedness) Vision screening does not replace the need for a full exam by an eye doctor on a yearly basis. Children and youth (0-19) are eligible for a free exam by an eye doctor every 12 months through their Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).
Lions Club volunteers (pictured from left to right), Ben, Bob and Andrew, display the Randot Preschool Stereotest (3D picture book) for measuring the ability to recognize depth, the Autorefractor (automated camera) to screen for some refractive errors such as near and farsightedness, and the HOTV visual acuity chart (letter book) to measure sharpness of eyesight/clarity of vision.
Learn more If you have questions about the Vision Screening Program, or need help with finding an eye doctor, please contact Let’s Talk Parenting at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 3616, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, or visit www.wgdpublichealth.ca/vision-screening.
