On behalf of the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you viewing our directory book. We hope you enjoy it! As an association we are busily planning our 2013 Wellington County Plowing Match for August 15th. The match this year will be held at Goodwin Farms, 7219 Wellington Road 21, Ariss. This match site will provide excellent plowing conditions and was home to our match in 2002. Jean Goodwin, a long time plowmen director has graciously offered up her land in the heart of the hamlet of Inverhaugh. We hope you will all come out to join us for an exciting day. A big thanks is extended to Jean for providing the land this year and making our match day possible.

BILL STICKNEY PRESIDENT

As you can see on our back cover we are happy to congratulate 4-H Canada on 100 years of success. The 4-H program, specifically with the Sod Busters Club has been an excellent fit and addition to our Plowmen’s Association over the years. We would welcome and encourage any 4-H alumni and current members to join us on August 15th for our plowing match. As we have mentioned in our past book the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association has successfully received the bid to host the 2016 International Plowing Match. Of course this will not be possible without many volunteers and sponsors and we look forward to our organizing committee working with all of you to make the 2016 IPM a success. Watch the media for more exciting details in the months to come! I would like to take this moment to thank all of our sponsors who have once again supported and made our directory a success. Much work goes into our directory and plowing match and I would like to thank all of our directors for making it such a success. I would also like to thank our queen of the Furrow, Cassandra for all of her work representing Wellington County this year. Your enthusiasm for the job has not gone unnoticed. A thank-you is also extended to past president Carman Weppler for all his work over the past 2 years. As I transition into my new role as president I look forward to meeting and working with all of you along the way. I hope all of you will mark your calendars for August 15th, 2013 and join the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association at the Goodwin Farm for a great day of plowing. There will be horse plowing, antique tractor and plows as well as modern tractor and plows. Our Queen of the Furrow contestants will be completing their plowing portion of the competition. As always the parking and admission is free and there will be a food booth on the grounds. We welcome all competitors, both experienced on the plowing circuit and those just new to it. It will be a great day and we would love to have you there to help make 2013 a success!

Sincerely,

BILL STICKNEY PRESIDENT page 4 Wellington County Plowing Match 2013

Thank You The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association would like to thank, recognize and congratulate Les and Ruth Darrington on a lifetime of service to our Association. They have contributed a combined 48 years of service to our organization filling our secretary, treasurer and OPA director roles. We are so thankful for all the work they have done and the dedication they have showed our association and all those directors, Queen of the Furrow and plowmen that they have helped and extended friendship to along the way. We wish them well as they embark on new endeavors and adventures together. There are no words that can truly show all the appreciaton that is owed. But we do extend a heartfelt Thank-You! Sincerely, The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association members past and present. In 2012, George Robinson was elected Wellington County OPA Advisory Councillor. He will replace long standing OPA Director Les Darrington.

My year thus far as reigning Wellington County Queen of the Furrow has been one that I will cherish forever! I could not have dreamed of a better year! I have been given opportunities to work alongside amazing people, and have learned some very valuable life lessons in return. While being an ambassador for agriculture and promoting the farming lifestyle at various events throughout Wellington and neighbouring counties has made me fully appreciate my grassroots background. I am proud to have always lived on a beef and sheep farm along with my sisters and mother. Agriculture has always been a part of my life and being able to share my thoughts and experiences with those in urban areas has been a very unique experience.

CASSANDRA CHORNOBOY WELLINGTON COUNTY QUEEN OF THE FURROW 2012-2013

Since being crowned I have been very busy with an array of activities. I have represented Wellington County at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Elora Christmas Parade, Fergus Christmas Parade, Alma Christmas Parade, Pizza Perfect in Elora, Wellington County 4-H Awards Banquet, as well as many more events. I was also given the opportunity to travel to Queens Park in Toronto from personal invitation of the Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs, Jeff Leal. While at Queens Park I was able to meet and promote the Wellington and International Plowing Match to Ted Arnott the MPP Wellington-Halton Hills, Randy Pettapiece the MPP Perth-Wellington, and Liz Sandals the Minister of Education. I also attended the Ontario Plowmen’s Association Convention which was held in Stratford, Ontario. There, I met a multitude of fellow Queens from across Ontario. It was very interesting to hear and learn about other local matches in their respective counties. I have made some fantastic friends and I look forward to seeing them in Mitchell at the International Plowing Match. I have faith in the Perth County Plowing Association to host a fabulous match and to celebrate the 100th year of the International Plowing Match. I am ecstatic to participate in this event and I look forward to competing for the Ontario Queen of the Furrow title. This opportunity has exposed me to many community events which I have enjoyed immensely. I would like to thank all those in the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association for all the encouragement they have given me throughout the year. The members of the Plowmen’s Association are some of the finest people I know. As soon as I was crowned Queen of the Furrow I was welcomed with open arms and warm smiles. They have all done so much work for the Wellington County Match and they are the backbone to such a great competition. I would also like to thank my family and those closest to me for being at all events and cheering me on. I am privileged to have such a great support system at home. I encourage everyone to come out to the Wellington County Plowing Match and experience the basis of agricultural at the local level! I guarantee you will not regret your choice! See you at the Match!

The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The winner will have the opportunity to attend various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, and most importantly, represent Wellington at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2014. WHO MAY COMPETE? The Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition is open to young women residing in Wellington County, between the ages of 16 and 25.
