On behalf of the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association I would like to welcome you to the upcoming Wellington County Plowing Match on August 21st 2014. As an association we are busy planning this match and we hope you enjoy it as much as we are. This match site provides excellent plowing conditions. Thank you to everyone in the association who helped stake the land, prepare the lunches, and to all the plowmen that will be participating.

BILL STICKNEY PRESIDENT

As some may already know, the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association successfully received the bid to host the 2016 International Plowing Match. Having such a large event coming to our county is both exciting and challenging. This will not be possible without many volunteers and sponsors and we look forward to our organizing committee working with all of you to ensure the 2016 IPM a huge success! Keep checking the papers for more exciting details as the date approaches fast. To all the sponsors who have once again supported and made our directory a success, thank you. A lot of work is put into the directory and local plowing match and I would like to extend a thank you to all directors for making it a success. I would like to thank our Queen of the Furrow, Jordan Pedersen for all her hard work representing Wellington County this year. Jordan has even promoted our local match internationally as she studied in Copenhagen, Denmark for a semester. Her enthusiasm and dedication has not gone unnoticed. Don’t forget to mark you calendars for Aug. 21st as I look forward to meeting you at our local match. Please join the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association at our local match for some plowing, food, and friendship. As always, there will be horse plowing, antique tractors and plows, as well as modern tractor and plows. Our Queen of the Furrow contestants will be completing their plowing portion of the competition. Parking and admission are both free and there will be a food booth on the grounds. We welcome all competitors, both experienced and brand new! It will be a wonderful day and we would love to have you there to help make 2014 a hit!

Sincerely,

BILL STICKNEY PRESIDENT

In Memory Thank You The Wellington County Plowmens Association would like to recognize Beth-Ann Weppler, Carmen Weppler, and Katie Cheesmond who all took leadership roles in the local association. Beth-Ann and Katie have worked very hard to better the queen of the furrow competition and prepare the Queens for the upcoming year. They both have dedicated endless hours while being the secretary, treasurer, and directory book coordinator. Carmen, as a very experienced plower always helps the queen of the furrow contestants at the local match and is always prepared to be the plow coach for the Wellington Queen at the IPM. With his expertise the Wellington Queen has all the tools and knowledge to finish with a high ranking plowing score at the IPM. Thank you Beth-Ann, Carmen, and Katie for all you have done for the Wellington County Plowmens Association. Your dedication to our local association is greatly appreciated! Sincerely, The Wellington County Plowmens Association directors past and present. Sincerely, The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association members past and present.

Those whom we love go out of sight, But never out of mind, Still cherished in the lonely hearts Of those they leave behind.

What a year so far! Since being crowned the 2013-2014 Wellington County Queen of the Furrow in October, I’ve had the privilege of representing the WCPA at a variety of events, including the Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture/The Royal Winter Fair, and a variety of Santa Claus Parades (Fergus, Elora, Erin- my hometown parade which gave us some less-than-ideal weather, and unfortunately missing out on Alma, which was cancelled due to power outages). I was also very fortunate to have an interview for a large article in the Wellington Advertiser, which also lead to an interview on Over the Fence (a local TV program about Fergus and Elora).

JORDAN PEDERSEN WELLINGTON COUNTY QUEEN OF THE FURROW 2013-2014

My personal journey has also taken me on exchange to the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and I am grateful for the overwhelming support I’ve received from the WCPA through this experience. I’m very glad to represent them halfway around the world (of course I brought my sash!) and appreciate their understanding and flexibility with this commitment. Upcoming this summer when I return home, we will be making up for lost time, attending many parades and festivals. If you see me feel free to stop and say hi, and ask any questions you may have about the Queen of the Furrow competition, the WCPA or the plowing match in general! Thank you, and I encourage people to come out the local match to support their local plowmen, learn something new about agriculture, and to get a preview of what will be in 2016 when we also host the IPM! Sincerely,

JORDAN PEDERSEN, WELLINGTON COUNTY QUEEN OF THE FURROW 2013-2014

The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association welcomes all enthusiastic young women with an interest in agriculture to enter the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition. This is a great opportunity to gain some valuable interview and public speaking experience. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE WELLINGTON COUNTY QUEEN OF THE FURROW? The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The winner will have the opportunity to attend various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, and most importantly, represent Wellington at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2015. WHO MAY COMPETE? The Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition is open to young women residing in Wellington County, between the ages of 18 and 25. Those who have competed in the past are welcome to compete again. WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF THE COMPETITION? Plowing 100 points, Interview 250 points, and Speech (2-3 minutes on any topic relating to agriculture) 250 points. The plowing portion of the competition will be held at the Wellington County Plowing Match. The speech and interview will be held at the Plowmen’s Banquet. WHAT IF YOU HAVE NEVER PLOWED, OR EVEN DRIVEN A TRACTOR? No worries. The plowing element of the competition is symbolic of the match but is not essential to success. A coach will be available to assist the contestants. For more information or to enter the competition, please contact: Katherine Clyne at 519-338-2911 at least one week before the Wellington County Plowing Match, August 21st, 2014.
