Wellington County Plowing Match 2012 Page 3

Another year has passed and we once again find ourselves busily planning another plowing match. In 2012, Webfoot Farm and Hatchery owned and operated by the Day family, situated just outside of Elora in Centre Wellington, will be our site. Morris Day and family hosted the International Plowing Match at this location in September of 2000. We thank the Day family for once again offering their land for our match site, as in the past, conditions match day will be excellent.

Carman Weppler President

The association and I invite you to join us on August 16th, 2012, to witness the match. Plowmen from all over Ontario, both young and old, will be competing to win. Everything from horse drawn plows to state-of-the-art modern equipment will be in motion. Our Queen of the Furrow competitors and VIP will show us what they can do with a plow. Come out and join us, there is so much to see at the match. At this time I would like to formally announce Wellington County has bid for and received the International Plowing Match for 2016. Of course there are numerous details to hammer out. Wellington County has done it in the past, and 2016 will be yet another showcase of the beautiful county we call home. However, we cannot do this alone. In the future, we will be asking for your help to host this massive community building event. As they say, many hands make light work. I would like to thank our sponsors who have once again supported our Association in the publication of our directory. Countless hours of work go into the formation of this spectacular directory, and I thank the directors, sponsors, and all others involved, a job well done. I encourage you to please mark your calendar, August 16th, 2012, the Wellington County Plowing Match, on Webfoot Farm and Hatchery, just outside Elora, on Wellington Road 7, come out and enjoy the day. We welcome you to be a part of the plowing competition, either as a competitor or a spectator, to make 2012 a success. We’ll see you there..... Sincerely,

Carman Weppler President

My year as reigning Wellington Queen of the Furrow is one that I will cherish forever. The people I have met and worked with are truly amazing. I have learned some life lessons and had experiences one could only dream of. Being an ambassador for agriculture and promoting the farming way of life through various events around Wellington County has sure made me appreciate my roots. I am proud to have grown up on the family dairy farm. Agriculture has always been a part of my life and it has been such an honor to share my thoughts and my experiences with those that have grown up in the urban area.

Krista Fraser Wellington County Queen of the Furrow 2011-2012

Throughout the year I have attended many events. I have represented Wellington County at the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair in Toronto, at the Elora, Fergus, Rockwood and Alma Christmas parades, Wellington County 4-H awards night, Pizza Perfect, Drayton farm show and much more. As the Queen of the Furrow I also attended the Ontario Plowmen’s Association Convention which was held in Stratford this year. There I met my fellow Queen’s from all over Ontario. I made some amazing friends that I continuously stay in contact with and cannot wait to see them at the International Plowing Match in Waterloo Region. I am extremely excited to be participating in this event and competing for Ontario Queen of the Furrow. The opportunity of being Queen of the Furrow has been tremendous. I have enjoyed all the community events along with meeting so many new people that I know will continue to support me and continue to teach me. I have been so thankful to be a part of the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The members are fantastic people who have welcomed me with open arms and warm smiles. I also have to thank my family and friends they have been a great support system. Everyone does such a great job to support and make the Wellington County Match so successful. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. I welcome everyone to come out to the Wellington County Plowing Match and experience your local agriculture community first hand! See you at the Match!

Krista Fraser, Wellington County Queen of the Furrow 2011-2012

The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association welcomes all enthusiastic young women with an interest in agriculture to enter the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition. This is a great opportunity to gain some valuable interview and public speaking experience. What is the role of the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow? The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The winner will have the opportunity to attend various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, and most importantly, represent Wellington at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2013. Who may compete? The Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition is open to young women residing in Wellington County, between the ages of 16 and 25. Those who have competed in the past are welcome to compete again. What are the elements of the competition? Plowing 100 points, Interview 250 points, and Speech (2-3 minutes on any topic relating to agriculture) 250 points. The plowing portion of the competition will be held at the Wellington County Plowing Match. The speech and interview will be held at the Plowmen’s Banquet. What if you have never plowed, or even driven a tractor? No worries. The plowing element of the competition is symbolic of the match but is not essential to success. A coach will be available to assist the contestants. For more information or to enter the competition, please contact: Beth-Ann Weppler at 327-8921 or Mary-Lou Fletcher at 638-3838 at least one week before the Wellington County Plowing Match, August 16th, 2012.

In Memory Those whom we love go out of sight, But never out of mind, Still cherished in the lonely hearts Of those they leave behind.

Robert Moffat Richard MacRobbie Murray Langdon Archie MacRobbie Ron Goodwin Howard Dunk Ozias 'Oz' Burkhart Alex MacIntosh Alex Black ELWIN WHALE

Elwin Whale Elwin Whale of Goldstone passed away May 31, 2012 in his 93rd year. Beloved husband of Enid (Trask) Whale for 67 years. Loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother and Brother-in-law. During his long farming career Elwin was a firm believer in life-long learning and community service and involvement. Elwin used to say “Do all the good you can, for as many as you can, for as long as ever you can” The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association will greatly miss Elwin and his many years as a director to our association. A special thank-you for all the years as the associations delegate to the Wellington County Farm Safety Organization. We were blessed to have Elwin as a dedicated volunteer and our sympathy is extended to Enid and Family.
