President''s Message

Another year has passed and we once again find ourselves busily planning another plowing match. In 2011 the farm owned and operated by Keith and Doris Jean Clyne and family, situated just outside of Harriston in the Town of Minto will be our site. The Clyne family hosted the Wellington County Plowing Match at this location, October 6, 1939. This is an amazing bit of history, and an example of the quality of thread that weaves our Plowmen’s Association together.

Carman Weppler - President -

The association and I invite you to join us on August 18th, 2011 to be a part of history. Plowmen from all over Ontario, both young and old, will be competing to win. Everything from horse drawn plows to state-of-the-art modern equipment, will be in motion. Our feature plow people, the 4-H Sod Busters, will also be turning the sod. Our Queen of the Furrow competitors and VIP will show us what they can do with a plow. Come out and join us, there is so much to see at the match. I would like to thank our sponsors who have once again supported our Association, in the publication of our directory. Countless hours of work go into the formation of this spectacular directory, and I thank the directors, sponsors and all others involved, a job well done. I encourage you to please mark you calendar, August 18th, 2011, the Wellington County Plowing Match, on the Clyne farm, just outside of Harriston at Hwy 89 and the Blind Line, come out and enjoy the day. We welcome you to be a part of the plowing competition, either as a competitor or a spectator, to make a bit of history.

We’ll see you there... Sincerely,

Carman Weppler President

Queen of the Furrow My year as reigning Wellington County Queen of the Furrow has been one that I will cherish forever! I have met and worked alongside some amazing people, have learned some valuable life lessons, and had experiences that one could only dream of. Being an ambassador for agriculture and promoting the farming lifestyle at various events around Wellington County has made me appreciate my background that much more. I am proud to have grown up on a beef and sheep farm all my life with my sisters and my mother. Agriculture has always been a part of my life and being able to share my thoughts and my experiences with those in urban areas has been such a unique experience.

Cassandra Chornoboy 2010-2011 Wellington County - Queen of the Furrow -

This year, I have attended many events. I have represented Wellington County at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Erin 4-H Awards Banquet, Elora Christmas Parade, Fergus Christmas Parade, a book release at the Erin Library, College Royal at the University of Guelph, Pizza Perfect in Elora, was the Master of Ceremonies at the Wellington County 4-H Awards Banquet, as well as many more events. As the Queen of the Furrow I also attended the Ontario Plowmen’s Association Convention which was held in Guelph. There, I met a multitude of fellow Queens from all over Ontario. It was very interesting to hear about their local matches in their respective counties. I have made some fantastic friends and I look forward to seeing them at the International Plowing Match in Prescott-Russell. I have faith in the Prescott-Russell Plowing Association to host a fantastic match to celebrate the International Plowing Match. I am extremely excited to participate in this event and I am looking forward to competing for Ontario Queen of the Furrow. This opportunity, in being the Queen of the Furrow has exposed me to many community events which I have enjoyed immensely. I have to also thank my family and those closest to me for being there with me at every event and cheering me on. I have been so thankful for such a great support system. I am also thankful to be a part of the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The members of the Plowmen’s Association are some of the finest people I know. As soon as I was crowned Queen of the Furrow I was welcomed with open arms and warm smiles. They have all done so much work for the Wellington County Match and they are the backbone to such a great competition. I would like to thank them for all they have done for me, and for all their hard work. I encourage you to come out to the Wellington County Plowing Match and experience your local agricultural community first hand! I guarantee you will not regret your choice! See you at the Match!

Queen of the Furrow Competition The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association welcomes all enthusiastic young women with an interest in agriculture to enter the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition. This is a great opportunity to gain some valuable interview and public speaking experience.

What is the role of the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow? The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The winner will have the opportunity to attend various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, and most importantly, represent Wellington at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2012.

Who may compete? The Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition is open to young women residing in Wellington County, between the ages of 16 and 25. Those who have competed in the past are welcome to compete again.

What are the elements of the competition? Plowing 100 points, Interview 250 points, and Speech (2-3 minutes on any topic relating to agriculture) 250 points. The plowing portion of the competition will be held at the Wellington County Plowing Match. The speech and interview will be held at the Plowmen’s Banquet.

What if you have never plowed, or even driven a tractor? No worries. The plowing element of the competition is symbolic of the match but is not essential to success. A coach will be available to assist the contestants. For more information or to enter the competition, please contact: Beth-Ann Weppler at 327-8921 or Mary-Lou Fletcher at 638-3838 at least one week before the Wellington County Plowing Match, August 18th, 2011.
