BANKS ‘PREY’ ON FIRST TIME HOME BUYERS Almost every time we get a First Time Buyer (FTB) mortgage client that has applied to the bank for their first mortgage, we learn that the bank was trying to charge them a higher interest rate etc. First timers lack any knowledge and experience when it comes to understanding all the facets of the real estate process, and yet the majority of parents and real estate agents continue to send ‘the kids’ to their friendly banker. by Mike Robinson MINTO - In recent discussion of Wellington County’s municipal economic development group, Minto Mayor David Anderson said it appears the group is really coming together. Minto’s Business and Economic Manager, Belinda Wick-Graham, said the group is working well together. “But, things are moving slowly, so we’re working on things to pick up the pace to move some of the projects forward. She added one of the items being considered is an economic development and strategic plan for Wellington County. Wick-Graham added this is something Minto has also worked on. “We were going to work on a strategy for what sectors we wanted to target. It makes much more sense to do it at a regional level.” “I’m glad that is finally happening.” Local recommendations On Minto’s local economic development and planning committee, councillors here have appointed Trish McQueen as the information technology representative. Later, Kelly Ward was appointed as the agriculture representative on the committee. Wick-Graham explained there were community positions available, and the thought was to have people who could represent different sectors. Council also agreed to sponsor $500 towards Minto’s recent Savour the Flavour event, and sponsor the Working in Rural Wellington event for $1,000. Wick-Graham pointed out both sponsorships were within the economic development budget. As for the Savour the Flavour event, she said an idea similar was cited as something the town could be doing, but the local chamber of commerce has taken the lead, and partnered with the town and the farmer’s market. She said the same held true for the Working in Rural Wellington event. “It’s been something we can partner with, but not have to take the lead on.”
