Welcome to the 71st Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games! On behalf of Council, staff and our wonderful residents, welcome to Centre Wellington! We are honoured to be the host town of this Annual Festival and Games since its founding in 1946. We are pleased to have as our guests many talented performers, athletes and musicians who add to the flair and enthusiasm of the Scottish Festival and Highland Games. We hope you will enjoy this year’s celebration of all things Scottish. While in Centre Wellington I hope that you take the time to roam our gorgeous downtowns, stroll through our unique stores and take in some of the wonderful outdoor activities that we have to offer in CW. President’s Message On behalf of the Board of Directors, Committee Chairpersons, Members and Volunteers of the Festival, welcome to Fergus and the 71st annual Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. We know that we compete with many other recreational and entertainment events and venues for your time and money and we are glad that you have seen it worthwhile in joining us this weekend. We have an exciting lineup again this year, comprised of a great deal of what has made our Festival successful for many, many years, and have added some new features that will pique the interests of all ages. The festivities start on Thursday night with the Pipes, Plaids and Pageantry Parade through historic downtown Fergus, where many of the bars and pubs will feature live Celtic music. Then, on to a myriad of “all things Scottish” throughout Friday afternoon, and all day Saturday and Sunday. We have dedicated Sunday to “Family Day” by focusing on making things enjoyable, comfortable, and affordable for families with younger children. We are proud to welcome the Leslie Clan gathering and their Chief, the Honourable Alexander Leslie, who has graciously agreed to act as our Chieftain this year. We also welcome Clan MacTavish and Clan Cunningham as they celebrate their annual gatherings at this year’s Festival. We are thrilled once again to host the lovely and talented Diana Gabaldon, who has been a great friend of the Festival for many years. We thank the many sponsors and government agencies who help us to make this annual event possible, and of course, the staff of the Township of Centre Wellington. Please make the most of your weekend and do not hesitate to ask any of our volunteers for any assistance you may need. Celtic traditions at the Fergus grand theatre A highlight of the downtown festivities during the 2016 Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games is the Saturday evening Celtic Traditions concert, which promises to be an intimate event honouring the musical heritage of Scotland. Theses traditional songs have travelled all over the world, from Scotland to Alabama, Cape Breton, and Ontario, enriching the lives of audiences and performers worldwide. Please join us for a wonderful evening of song and celebration in the plush seats and air conditioned comfort of the glorious downtown Fergus Grand Theatre, as Tommy Leadbeater welcomes members of The StepCrew, Scooter Muse, David Leask, Jill Chambless, Gillebrìde MacMillan, Bob MacLean and The Steel City Rovers in an on stage acoustic céilidh. Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless The crimson cross of St. Andrew emblazons the State flag of Alabama, so it comes as no surprise that Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless bring their fusion of Southern and Celtic sounds to the Fergus Scottish Festival. NUA NUA draws deep from the well of traditional Celtic music to deliver a distinctive contemporary musical experience. Award winning fiddle player James Law, guitarist Graeme McGillivray, and bodhrán player Jacob McCauley combine their unique talents to create the progressive and unique sounds of the trad trio NUA. NUA’s innovative compositions, passionate and knowledgeable workshops, engaging stage presence, and kinetic energy, are not to be missed at this year’s Festival! Screeched Inn Guitarist Greg Barry, drummer Dan Speck, and bassist Thom Speck make up the modern day kitchen party trio, Screeched Inn. All three of these lads share their vocal talents, and their harmonies will raise the hair on your arms. With or without the rum, this “screech in ceremony” will be a warm welcome for one and all to this year’s Festival. Steel City Rovers The Steel City Rovers are an accomplished group of multi instrumentalists who despite their strong folk roots, prefer to think of themselves as “World” rather than “Celtic” musicians. As comfortable with their own compositions as they are with time honoured classics, The Steel City Rovers will share their high energy, Celtibilly flare as they rove around the Festival site all weekend.

“Tattooed in Tradition” is a remarkable spectacle of Pipe Bands, dancers, musicians and Scottish-themed performances. It simply is the finest way to kick off our Festival weekend. Following the events on Main Field, there will be not one but two spectacular fireworks displays. The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games is proud to be the stomping grounds for this year’s “Tattooed in Tradition” Friday night concert featuring the dynamic performers of The StepCrew. Finish your night off with a down-home kitchen céilidh in the Highland Pub. Featured Artists Paris Port Dover Pipe Band Formed in 2000 with 10 pipers and one drummer, The Paris Port Dover Pipe Band has grown to 130 members. As well as performances, the band competes throughout the world, and has placed in the World Championships in Glasgow. Paris Port Dover has proudly represented Canada internationally at various military Tattoos, including at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2014. Sporting the Lamont Tartan, The Paris Port Dover Pipe Band has appeared twice with Sir Paul McCartney, and the Fergus Scottish Festival is thrilled to welcome them to “Tattooed in Tradition”. The Schiehallion Dancers Hailing from Hamilton, The Schiehallion Dancers have graced the world’s stages with their award winning interpretations of traditional dance and unique choreography. Founded in 1967 by world champion Sandra Bald Jones, these highland dancers exude enthusiasm and a contagious energy that is sure to inspire.

Tony McManus Scottish born Tony McManus is recognized as one of the best Celtic steel string guitarists in the world, yet his exceptional musical talent has made him as comfortable with jazz and the classical repertoire as he is with the music of his childhood. Tony is sought world over for his contributions to film soundtracks and as a session player, but we are proud that this guitar virtuoso makes his home just outside of Fergus, in the beautiful village of Elora. The StepCrew The StepCrew features the world’s top talents in Irish Stepdancing, Ottawa Valley Stepdancing, and Modern Tap. These five dynamic performers both excel in their respective traditional forms of dance and create brand new, modern fusions of all three styles. Backed by a five piece band including Celtic vocals and joined by the fiddle playing of three champion musicians, the energy of The StepCrew as a whole, and as individual performers, will be on display all weekend long throughout the many stages in and around the Festival.

In the seventeenth century, when British troops served in Holland, it was the custom for a drummer to march throught he streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum would “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “Last Call”. In English, “tap toe” became “tattoo” and over the years, the drummer was accompanied by a bugle player or a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dances, the stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

The Fergus Scottish Festival is proud to host over 40 Clan Societies, who indulge in exploring their histories, exhibiting archival artifacts and displays, creating new friendships and reuniting with those of old, and participating in the appreciation of the ancient Clan systems that existed in Scotland’s past. Each society houses a Clan Cabana on the Festival’s “Avenue of the Clans” throughout the weekend, which allows the free and open exchange of information about individual Clans, including their role in Scottish history, the many tartans and septs connected with a Clan and the many relationships that exist with modern Scottish and North American culture. Many Clan societies choose to organize their annual general meetings and family reunions to coincide with the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, and an award is presented to “Best Clan Tent.”

Organized by the Guelph Victors, this scenic 10k race is a community event with proceeds supporting local youth athletic programs. The race now includes a 2 x 5k relay and a free kid’s 400m. The Fergus Highland Games 10k Run is a sanctioned event of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. The single loop course for the Fergus Highland Games 10k Run winds through quiet, established neighbourhoods and along picturesque country roads in the beautiful Fergus and Elora countryside before returning to Victoria Park in Fergus. Race participants will enjoy the support of the friendly neighbours cheering them on. Participants, their families and supporters are welcome to join us at the Festival all day Sunday following the race. Registration is available before hand or the day of the race. Craig has performed in many major musical production companies, including The Canadian Opera Company, the Stratford Festival, and the Winnipeg Philharmonic. Celtic Clogging with Angela Cameron and Friends Angela Cameron, with the help of a few friends, will entertain and educate all ages with the art of Celtic clogging. This Celtic tradition is found all over North America in various forms. Maybe your interest will be sparked when you come out and try this invigorating dance; what a fun way to get some exercise!

Storys and tales with ‘Seamus’ Stories about the thistle, the spider, and the wild haggis will entertain you as reenactor Douglas Robinson (aka Seamus Gunn) in full highland costume, takes to the stage or the tree shaded corners to tell his fanciful tales. Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless The crimson cross of St. Andrew emblazons the State flag of Alabama, so it comes as no surprise that Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless bring their fusion of Southern and Celtic sounds to the Fergus Scottish Festival. Although Scooter can play just about anything with strings, it’s his virtuosity on the banjo that provides the perfect complement for Jill’s stunning voice and ex-ceptional talent on the flute. Sheep Shearing Tom Redpath, our intrepid shearer of sheep with over 30 years experience, returns to showcase the centuries old tradition of sheep shearing. Known internationally for his way with words, shears, and sheep, Tom entertains and educates with flair, and the sheep always feel much lighter when he is done. Dry Stone Wall Construction www.sdstone.ca The Fergus Scottish Festival proudly presents a special demonstration this year, introducing audiences to the construction of a dry stone wall from the ground up. Dry stone walls, also known as dry stone dykes,drystane dykes,dry stone hedges,rock fences or stone fences, are constructed from stones without mortar to bind them together. Watch as Bill Jeffers and Jacqui Jeffers will transform a pile of loose rocks into a beautiful, sturdy, and strong wall. drystonecanada@yahoo.ca. Fly tying Come out and be amazed as little coloured bits of fluff and shiny filaments combine to form beautiful fishing lures. Skilled fisher folk will also share their tall tales and favourite fishing locales from around the world. Spinning, Quilting, and Embroidery Display and Demonstration The art of spinning wool into yarn and weaving it into finished products is a time-honoured tradition that continues to this day. Come see the beautiful handicrafts on display that are made using this extraordinary process. You can also add a few stitches to the creation of a hand quilted quilt that will be on exhibit in wooden frames, and a hand embroidery project that will be showcased throughout the weekend. Rope Making Always a huge Festival favourite, children of all ages can come down and learn the industrious, universal, and addictive skill of rope making! You will get to experience the hands-on process of making your own piece of rope to take home and show off to all your friends. Blacksmithing Try your hand at swinging a hammer to forge hot metal, just like the settlers did! Our team of talented blacksmiths have graciously returned to teach and demonstrate the skills used since ironworking began. Hands-on instruction will be given to those who dare to deliver the hammer’s blow; safety will be ensured for all who participate.

Dr James Fraser: Diaspora in Education Dr. James Fraser, PhD, originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, is the current Scottish Studies Foundation Chair at the University of Guelph. Not to be confused with Jamie Fraser of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series fame, Dr. Fraser comes to us from the University of Edinburgh’s Department of History where he is a senior lecturer in Early Scottish History. Anthony Lordi: Diaspora in Scottish Sport: how an Obscure Indigenous Scottish Sport gained Worldwide Appeal Anthony Lordi is an American born Swiss athlete, a Scottish heavy event thrower, a film producer, and a captivating speaker. He is one of the producers of the film Five Thirteen, which was presented at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. When he’s not working on feature films, however, this businessman drops the suit for a kilt, enjoying Scottish heavy events from the Arctic circle in Norway, to Scotland, to Fergus and every place in between, and has become somewhat of a celebrity ambassador for the sport. Anthony’s sportsmanship and passion for throwing heavy things has made him popular with athletes and crowds alike.

Cynthia Kinnunen, Celtic style Ukulele workshop Cynthia Kinnunen is a talented ukulele player and educator who believes everyone deserves to enjoy and make music. She’s currently studying under the master of Ukuleles, James Hill (jameshillmusic.com) to become a master teacher of the Ukulele! She is the creator and leader of the Royal City Ukuele Ensemble in Guelph, Ontario with 24 members! So bring your ukulele and learn some great strumming patterns and a couple of great Celtic songs to add to your repetoir (limited number of ukuleles available if you don’t have your own).

Sing Along with us! At the end of each day, we’re going to get the audience to dance and sing along with us! Gillebride MacMillan will sing an original with Sarah Prescott – her public debut with her orginal song! - with Carolyn McLeod joining in with a Celtic Classic made famous by Archie Grant. We then ramp it up John Allan Cameron style with Lord of the Dance and many other celtic classics. The Shananigans will be providing their talented musical skills and you never know who might pop in and join us in this fantastic musical jam!

Pipes and Drums Competition/Performances The Downtown Fergus parade on Thursday will feature three of our best local pipe bands in Grand Celtic Pipe Band, Fergus Pipe Band and Guelph Pipe Band. Friday throughout the day will feature roaming groups of pipers and drummers from three of our best local pipe bands in Grand Celtic Pipe Band, Fergus Pipe Band and Guelph Pipe Band. The Friday night ‘Tattooed in Tradition’ will feature the sound of Pipes and Drums from our local bands Fergus Pipe Band and Grand Celtic Pipe Band as well as regional favorites in the Beinn Gorm Highlnders Pipe Band and Celtic Blue Pipe Band. This year we will have as a “Feature Band” the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band. Saturday will feature solo piping and drumming competitions in the morning, Pipe Band competitions in the afternoon along with two massed pipes and drums, one during the noon time ceremonies and the second at the end of the day ceremony. These events are organized by the Pipe and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and will showcase some of Ontario’s best talents. Sunday will feature two massed pipe band performances as well as individual band performances by Grand Celtic Pipe Band, Fergus Pipe Band, Guelph Pipe band, Stratford Police Pipe Band, Beinn Gorn Highlanders Pipe Band, Celtic Blue Pipe Band and the Teasewater Pipe Band. These events will go on through most of the afternoon on Sunday with a grand finally massed pipes and drums at the closing ceremonies.

They’re not just fiddling around: The StepCrew bring together the high energy of Celtic and Ottawa Valley Stepdancing and exhilarating Tap, with world class fiddlers and an incredible five piece ensemble, to deliver a full body Celtic music experience. Paddy Moloney, leader of the iconic Celtic music sensation The Chieftains, raves that, “The StepCrew is a brilliant visual and musical display of the most talented dancers I’ve ever seen.” You may recognize some of their talented musicians from the band Quagmire, or their amazing musical collaboration with John Allan Cameron in the 1998 theatrical celebration of Canada’s Celtic culture, Needfire: Passion of the Heart. Scottish immigration to Canada and the town of Fergus are synonymous. Nick Gush is the first Canadian born in his Scottish family, and Janice Howie still speaks with a lovely lilting brogue. Together, they are local favourites and frequent guests at the Fergus Scottish Festival. This year, multi instrumentalist Egan Baird will join them for sets of traditional and contemporary Celtic music, which will surely remind you of “Over Home.”

Scottish born Tony McManus is recognized as one of the best Celtic steel string guitarists in the world, yet his exceptional musical talent has made him as comfortable with jazz and the classical repertoire as he is with the music of his childhood. Tony is sought world over for his contributions to film soundtracks and as a session player, but we are proud that this guitar virtuoso makes his home just outside of Fergus, in the beautiful village of Elora.

Kitchen Ceilidh (Gaelic for PARTY!) This one’s gonna be a party! There are so many talented musicians, singers, dancers, and entertainers this year that we decided to see if we could fit them all on one stage at one time. Hold on to your kilts! The party starts with The StepCrew’s amazing Friday night showcase on the main field, and continues at the Highland Pub tent, where you can sing and dance along with the Steel City Rovers, Tommy Leadbeater, Jill Chambless, Scooter Muse, and anyone else with a fiddle, a pipe, a guitar, or a fine pitch. The kinetic energy of this caliber of talent will blow you away, and it’s all included in your Friday night admission: Tattooed in Tradition, The StepCrew, and a downhome Kitchen Ceilidh! Tommy Leadbeater Tommy Leadbeater can’t remember a time when he wasn’t singing in a band or performing on stage. With John Allan Cameron as his musical godfather, and a family tree including famed Cape Breton fiddler Sandy MacIntyre, Donnell Leahy, and cousin-in-law Natalie MacMaster, just imagine the family kitchen cèilidhs comprised of so many illustrious Fergus Scottish Festival alumni! We can’t wait to be guests at the Celtic Traditions acoustic celiedh on Saturday night, when he and his musical friends perform at the Fergus Grand Theatre.

David Leask David Leask epitomizes the modern bard. Born in Jedburgh Scotland, and now calling Ontario his home, David is an award winning songwriter and a soul stirring vocalist. With his traditional renditions of old Scottish songs, and his impassioned original compositions, David delivers outstanding performances that celebrate his Celtic and Canadian sensibilities.

Bob MacLean Bob MacLean’s ancestral roots may lie in Scotland, but his musical roots didn’t include Celtic music until recently, when he jammed with the Cape Breton band, The Barra MacNeils. His precise classical guitar stylings bring a unique point of view to the Celtic musical family, and his repertoire and energy are boundless. A frequent Festival performer, we look forward to seeing Bob’s impressive impromptu collaborations with other talented musicians throughout the weekend.

Gillebrìde MacMillan Famed poet, singer, and storyteller, Gillebrìde MacMillan, plays Gwyllyn, the Welsh bard of Castle Leoch in the popular television series Outlander, and we are thrilled to have both Gillebrìde MacMillan and the series creator Diana Gabaldon together at this year’s festival. Truly a Renaissance man, Gillebrìde will lead workshops on poetry, literature, music and Celtic culture, as well as host this year’s Friday Night Tattooed in Tradition. Gillebrìde’s ability to convey the haunting lyricism of Gaelic songs and traditions will leave you breathless.

Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless The crimson cross of St. Andrew emblazons the State flag of Alabama, so it comes as no surprise that Scooter Muse and Jill Chambless bring their fusion of Southern and Celtic sounds to the Fergus Scottish Festival. Although Scooter can play just about anything with strings, it’s his virtuosity on the banjo that provides the perfect complement for Jill’s stunning voice and exceptional talent on the flute.

NUA NUA draws deep from the well of traditional Celtic music to deliver a distinctive contemporary musical experience. Award winning fiddle player James Law, guitarist Graeme McGillivray, and bodhrán player Jacob McCauley combine their unique talents to create the progressive and unique sounds of the trad trio NUA. NUA’s innovative compositions, passionate and knowledgeable workshops, engaging stage presence, and kinetic energy, are not to be missed at this year’s Festival!

Screeched Inn Guitarist Greg Barry, drummer Dan Speck, and bassist Thom Speck make up the modern day kitchen party trio, Screeched Inn. All three of these lads share their vocal talents, and their harmonies will raise the hair on your arms. With or without the rum, this “screech in ceremony” will be a warm welcome for one and all to this year’s Festival.

Steel City Rovers The Steel City Rovers are an accomplished group of multi instrumentalists who despite their strong folk roots, prefer to think of themselves as “World” rather than “Celtic” musicians. As comfortable with their own compositions as they are with time honoured classics, The Steel City Rovers will share their high energy, Celtibilly flare as they rove around the Festival site all weekend.

Founded in 1946 by Alex Robertson, the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games were created as a community wide celebration of Scottish life and customs. Since then the Festival has grown to proudly earn the title of the oldest 3 day Scottish Festival in North America attracting over 30,000 visitors.
