Engagement Ring

SHOPPING GUIDE The average engagement ring costs around $5000. Considering that this ring is typically a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, many men say the high cost is warranted to procure a beautiful ring. Before making this investment, it pays to have some knowledge in gem selection. HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOU WANT This can help anyone get a better deal plus an informed shopper can avoid being taken advantage of. THE 4 Cs The 4 Cs stand for cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The cut refers to the shape of the stone as well as the skill involved in achieving the shape of the facets so that it reflects the light brilliantly. The

colour is designated by the International Gemological Institute which tells how closely a diamond’s colour approaches colourlessness. The diamond will be assigned a letter grade. The lower the alphabet letter, the whiter the stone. Clarity refers to the amount, size, type, and location of internal flaws in a diamond, also known as inclusions. The carat weight is the size and weight of the stone. The larger the stone, the more pricey it can be. WHICH STYLE OF RING YOUR GIRLFRIEND PREFERS? Your fiancee-to-be may have a certain style and shape preference. It pays to know what she wants. See whether she will be happy with a larger stone that may have some imperfections not

easily seen to the naked eye or a smaller, flawless stone. KNOW YOUR BUDGET You should go to jewellery stores to price out different styles and see how diamonds compare. This way you will have an accurate idea of just how much rings cost. It pays to understand a jeweller’s return policy. Find out if the style can be changed or if you can get a refund or make an exchange. OTHER TIPS FOR SAVINGS SUCCESS There are ways to maximize your budget and still end up with a beautiful stone. • Ask for a stone that is slightly less than the next carat (i.e. 0.9 instead of one carat). This subtle difference can add up to substantial savings. The price difference

between a 1.90 and a 2.0 carat diamond can be as much as $5,000. Also, choose a stone that has more surface area, which will make it appear larger even if it does not have as much sparkle. • If she prefers the look of platinum, realize white gold, silver or tungsten are more affordable options and will still give off that silvery hue. • Make sure the store is an accredited jeweller. This way you know you are buying from a reputable source and the diamonds were acquired ethically. • Negotiate the price. Just because it is jewellery doesn’t mean you can’t comparison shop and find out if another jeweller will match a competitor’s offer.

Origins of bridal

CUSTOMS Chances are those who have attended a wedding have witnessed some popular traditions take place. The bride wears a veil, a court of wedding attendants accompanies the bride and groom, and birdseed, rice or flower petals are tossed. But have you ever wondered why? The wedding customs are ripe with tradition and harken back to days when superstition and myth often ruled the day. THROWING RICE Today it has become de rigueur to blow bubbles, toss birdseed or release doves when the bride and groom leave the house of worship newly betrothed. That’s because savvy individuals found that raw rice can pose a hazard to birds pecking in the area. However, rice throwing is an old custom that dates back to the Middle Ages, when wheat or rice where thrown to symbolize

fertility for the couple. BOUQUET Nowadays, the bride carries a beautiful bouquet of flowers. But the purpose of the bouquet held different meanings in the past. Saracen brides carried orange blossoms for fertility. Others carried a combination of herbs and flowers to ward off evil spirits with their aroma. Bouquets of dill were often carried, again for fertility reasons, and after the ceremony, the dill was eaten to encourage lust. BRIDESMAIDS There may be arguments over dresses and how many bridesmaids to have in a wedding party now, but in ancient times it was “the more the merrier.” That’s because bridesmaids were another measure to keep the bride safe against evil spirits. Essentially the bridesmaids were decoys for the spirits -- dressing like the bride to

confuse the spirits or maybe help deter them to leave the bride be. WEDDING RINGS Wearing of wedding rings dates back to ancient Egypt. The round shape of a ring symbolizes eternal love. The ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand

because it is believed this finger has a blood vessel that goes directly to the heart. WEDDING CAKE The traditional wedding cake evolved from Roman

times when the cake was originally made from wheat. It was broken over the bride’s head to ensure fertility. All of the guests eat a piece for good luck. Single women used to place a piece of wedding cake under their pillows in the hopes of finding their own husbands. FATHER ACCOMPANYING THE BRIDE This tradition symbolizes that the bride’s father endorses the choice in husband and is presenting his daughter as a pure bride to that man. KISSING THE BRIDE In older times, a kiss symbolized a legal bond. Therefore, the bride and groom kissed to seal the deal on their betrothal. There are many traditions surrounding a wedding that people simply accept. But understanding their origins can make the ceremony more meaningful.

GIVE YOUR WEDDING

CHOOSE A

WEDDING DATE wisely Many couples find themselves bombarded with questions the moment they become engaged, and perhaps no questions is more common than, “When is the wedding?” Although a number of couples would prefer to bask in the excitement of their engagement, some couples feel pressured to rush into picking a wedding date. Choosing a wedding date without giving it much consideration may make things more difficult down the road. Rather than jumping head first into any decisions, couples should give thought to any and all dates and decide if there are certain times of the year they want to tie the knot or avoid. SEASON When thinking about potential wedding dates, it helps to have a place to start. Some couples find it helpful to start with a particular season and then narrow it down from there. Decide if you prefer the lush greenery of summer or the amazing color spectrum of an autumn

afternoon. Perhaps you envision arriving at the ceremony with a snowpacked landscape amid twinkling holiday lights? Think about the season when you feel most happy and then determine if that time of year is doable. MONTH Certain months may seem perfect, but not for busy professionals or those with limited vacation time at their disposal. For example, early spring may not be good for accountants tallying yearend numbers. Teachers may feel most comfortable tying the knot in the summer when they already have days off. If you run a pool business or a lawn maintenance company, then the summer might not be so good. Keep these factors in mind. HOLIDAYS Some people would like to tie their wedding day to a particular holiday. Valentine’s Day is popular for weddings thanks to the romantic sentiments synonymous with the holiday, while some couples prefer Halloween or

Rockmosa Community Centre Christmas weddings. Holiday weddings can be exciting, but they also produce significant obstacles that couples who choose to get married during other times of year don’t have to worry about. Guests may not want to travel or spend time away from their families to attend a holiday wedding. Having a wedding during a holiday may mean competing for vendors and reception spaces. Prices on everything from food to flowers to airline tickets could be higher as vendors cash in on customer demand. DAY OF THE WEEK It’s less expensive for couples to get married on Fridays and Sundays than Saturday afternoons or evenings. Couples may think that the money saved will be well worth it, but they also should think about how this decision may affect their guests. A Friday wedding requires people to take off from work or school. Sunday weddings may be slightly more convenient, but those who have to get back to work on Monday

may be tired from late-night festivities. Couples should anticipate some guests not making it to their weddings when those weddings are not on Saturdays. RELIGIOUS CONSTRAINTS Couples having religious ceremonies should consult with their houses of worship as to which dates are acceptable. Some will not have weddings on days of religious observation. It is wise to consult with a church, synagogue or mosque before booking any other components of the wedding so that you are certain your chosen day is acceptable. ANY AVAILABLE DATES Your wedding date may be dictated by your caterer or wedding hall. If you have a particular venue in mind, you may be limited by their availability. This is a concession you will need to make if your heart is set on this particular location. Planning a wedding can be exciting. But the ball cannot get rolling until couples first choose the day they will tie the knot.

Seating Solutions:

MANAGING SEATING ARRANGEMENTS After all of the invitations have been sent and RSVPs returned, couples who are including a sit-down dinner must figure out the seating arrangements for their guests. Such a task can be both fun and stressful. The fun of making seating arrangements stems from reuniting friends and family members who couples feel will enjoy one another’s company and make the reception that much more fun. But feuding family members can make the task of assigning seats somewhat stressful. The following tips can help couples enjoy the process of mapping out their wedding reception seating assignments. MAKE ASSIGNMENTS BY HAND While there is software designed specifically to

help couples map out seating assignments, many couples find it easier to do the seating assignments by hand, which allows couples more freedom to rearrange tables. In addition, making the seating arrangements by hand ensures that couples spread out guests who might not get along. DON’T SEAT GUESTS IN THE HOPES OF QUASHING OLD CONFLICTS While the jovial spirit of a wedding ceremony and reception might seem like the perfect atmosphere for feuding friends or family members to bury the hatchet, this leaves open the potentially ugly possibility that such conflicts might escalate. Couples don’t want their weddings to be remembered for all the wrong reasons, so keep

Local Luxury MEETING ALL YOUR HALL NEEDS

feuding factions apart when assigning seats. KEEP SPECIAL NEEDS GUESTS IN MIND Guests with medical conditions may benefit from sitting close to the restroom, while those with mobility issues might be best served sitting in a spot where waitstaff can more easily recognize when they need something. Consider sitting older guests, whose vision might not be as strong as it once was, closer to the happy couple so these guests can see everything and won’t feel left out. MAKE SURE THE SEATING ASSIGNMENT TABLE IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE The table on which seating assignment cards will be placed should be accessible upon entering the reception hall. A table that’s far off

in the corner may confuse some guests, who might think the seating is a freefor-all and simply sit in the first empty seats they see. CONSIDER FLOW BETWEEN TABLES While you might have aced the seating assignments at each table, don’t overlook the importance of mapping out tables as well. Plan for tables of family members to be placed next to one another, and do the same with groups of friends. This encourages guests to mingle and can make the night much more enjoyable for everyone involved. Planning seating assignments for a wedding reception is no small task. But couples can employ several strategies to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Grooms:

LOOK YOUR WEDDING DAY BEST

Weddings are a chance for couples tying the knot to be the centre of attention. All eyes will be glued to the bride and groom on this special day, which makes it even more important for couples to look their collective best. Brides might garner most of the attention on a couple’s wedding day, but dashing grooms also will get their share of attention. As a result, grooms must be just as diligent as their blushing brides with regard to grooming and appearance on their wedding days. To look picture-perfect, grooms may want to include these grooming tips in their wedding day preparation. HAIR Schedule a haircut with a professional stylist roughly a week before the wedding to get your hair shaped and trimmed. Although trendy hairstyles may show off creativity, keep in mind that photos last forever, and it’s often better to stick with

a classic cut. A barber or stylist may suggest styles that best suit your face shape and hair texture. Above all, the haircut should be neat. Resist the urge to wash your hair every day before the wedding. Allow some natural oils to build up and make your hair shine in a healthy way. SHAVING Shaving is another thing grooms must consider. If you have a beard, make sure it is clean, combed and trimmed. Men who shave the day of their weddings may find their skin is sensitive and irritated, which can lead to redness. Unless your facial hair grows especially fast, shave the evening before. This is a good time to splurge on a professional shave with a straight razor at a barber shop. A hot shave from a professional will produce a close shave with the least amount of irritation when done correctly. HANDS Grooms also may want

to book a manicure. Keep in mind that salons will do men’s nonpolish manicures and pedicures, and they can be well worth the investment. Photos of entwined hands or close-ups of the ring exchange will have guests zeroing in on your fingers. Have hands look their best with clean, shaped fingernails and trimmed cuticles. SKIN Get plenty of sleep the night prior to the wedding. Being well rested will help reduce puffy eyes, dark circles and sallow skin. It will also put you in a more positive mood, which can help you enjoy the day. The day of the wedding, shower using water and a mild soap. Avoid any skin irritation by patting your face and body dry, rather than rubbing it with the towel. Moisturize your skin to avoid dry patches. Stores sell many moisturizers geared toward men’s needs, often in unscented or more masculine fragrances.

Reducing shine is key for wedding day photos. Rely on face and hair products that will not add unnecessary sheen to your skin or hair to avoid making you look greasy. Matte hair waxes and sprays will tame tresses. Also, ask your fiancé to pick you up a package of blotting tissues if you are prone to oily skin. These absorbent, typically rice-paper sheets will remove oil from your face and keep sheen to a minimum. SMILE Make sure your teeth have been thoroughly brushed and that you have used a minty mouthwash so you’re primed for that first kiss. Many grooms also opt for whitening treatments prior to the wedding so they have a dazzling smile. On their wedding days, grooms will likely be photographed more than any other time in their lives. That means putting extra effort into personal grooming to look their best.

wedding invitations TIP SHEET

Wedding invitations often provide guests with a first glimpse of a wedding’s style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made. Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow. Couples should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their wedding invitations. HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF YOUR GUEST LIST

Before shopping for wedding invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the wedding will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive.

12 |

DECIDE ON THE FORMALITY OF THE WEDDING

Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore? The invitation should match the formality of the event in style and the sentiments expressed. An

EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY. ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less formal wording could indicate a more laid-back event. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT BY PLAYING WITH INVITATION SIZES AND SHAPES Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the wedding mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and

WELLINGTON WEDDINGS | February 2016

size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost. CHOOSE A LEGIBLE FONT AND TEXT COLOR Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation. Steer clear of pastel or yellow text colors, and remember to have a high contrast between the color of the invitation and the text you are using for easy reading. KEEP IT SIMPLE It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.” Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in the wedding invitation for the reception information and response card. Never put information such as where you are registered

or “no kids allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth or on a wedding website. DO SOME MATH It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out the invitations at least two months before the wedding. Have an RSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the wedding, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. MAKE IT EASY FOR GUESTS TO RESPOND Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly. ALWAYS ORDER EXTRA Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself.

Dressing

FOR WEDDING DAY COMFORT Wedding attire is known more for style than comfort. Formal wear, high heels and the various trappings of wedding day wardrobes do not always equate to a day of comfort. While dressing up will never be the same as slipping into a well-worn pair of jeans, there are ways for brides, grooms and guests to be comfortable on the big day. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER It’s tempting to put appearances before comfort. However, wearing clothing without regard for the weather is a surefire way to be uncomfortable all day long. Choose lightweight fabrics for warm weather occasions, and heavier fabrics when attending a winter wedding. Wraps, short jackets, muffs, and decorative scarves allow women to cover up if there’s a chill from the weather or if air conditioning is set too cold. INVEST IN ALTERATIONS Few people can wear clothing, especially formal attire, right off the rack. The services of a good tailor can prove invaluable. Shortened hemlines or tightened

sleeves can make dresses fit better. Shapewear or support components may be added to the wedding gown so that extra undergarment layers can be avoided. The less you have to fuss with clothing, the more comfortable you will be. Try on your outfit without alterations and point out the areas that are bothersome. Is a bodice slipping down? Is the tuxedo jacket a little too snug? Speak with the tailor about what can be done to remedy the situation. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE Formal wear is frequently governed by a different set of sizes from everyday attire. Formal items are cut smaller and more in line with high fashion couture sizing. Expect to have to go up in size with regard to formal gowns. Instead of concerning yourself with the size on the tag, focus on the fit. Squeezing into something that is too small can make you uncomfortable all evening long and inhibit your ability to enjoy yourself on the dance floor. Avoid discomfort (and split seams) by leaving some wiggle room in wedding day ensembles.

FOCUS ON FOOTWEAR Guests’ eyes likely won’t be on your feet. Still, many people subject themselves to uncomfortable shoes all in the name of fashion. The fastest way to an unenjoyable time is having to sit out a wedding because your shoes are causing excruciating pain. New shoes sometimes need a period of breaking in, so wear them around the house to determine if they’re comfortable enough

FEW PEOPLE CAN WEAR CLOTHING RIGHT OFF THE RACK. to wear for several hours at a time. Women should opt for the lowest heel possible to avoid pressure on the balls and arches of their feet. Floor-length wedding gowns usually cover a bride’s feet, so she has more leeway with finding an attractive, yet comfortable shoe. Outdoor weddings tend to be more casual than indoor affairs, and guests may be perfectly comfortable wearing

Because love should be celebrated

sandals. BRIDES CAN GO MINIMALIST Wedding dresses range from ethereal sheaths to layered princess gowns. The more fabric, tulle, boning and crinoline in the gown, the heavier it will be. Heavy gowns can make it difficult to move around, particularly when dancing or visiting the restroom. Unless you have your heart set on a full Cinderella look, scale back on your gown. EAT AND CHOOSE HEALTHY FOODS Don’t skip meals the day of the wedding. Choose low-sodium, low-sugar foods that provide sustained energy without sitting heavily in your stomach or causing fluid retention. In addition, be sure to drink plenty of water. Dehydration and hunger pangs can ruin a wedding by causing fatigue, headaches and even fainting. Comfort may not be a top priority when planning a wedding. But wedding guests and participants alike should dress with some manner of comfort in mind in order to make the day more enjoyable.

did you

KNOW? The modern bridal shower may trace its origins back to the 1890s. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says the first bridal shower hostess filled a paper parasol with small presents and turned it over the head of the bride-to-be. Soon the concept caught on, and many other women began “showering” future brides in such a manner. Naturally, as presents became larger and heavier, the tradition of literally showering the bride with gifts was modified — but the name has stuck. Bridal showers are designed to equip couples with many of the necessities to start their new life together. This custom is believed to have evolved from an old dowry system, in which a bride was expected to bring valuables to the marriage. The dowry was originally intended as compensation for the burden of supporting a wife placed on the groom. Some parents of the bride were not rich enough to afford an ample dowry, so friends and family members would offer small gifts to help offset this financial responsibility. Today, both the bride and groom are equal partners in the marriage, bringing together their collective wealth. However, showers are still held regardless of the financial need of the bride as a way to offer good wishes before she embarks on her new journey.

EXPERT TIPS FOR

special occasion hair styles

Special occasions and parties crop up over the course of a typical year. Be it weddings, birthday parties or anniversary galas, friends and families often gather to celebrate especially momentous events. Part of the excitement of these events is donning formalwear or cocktail attire and enlisting the help of beauty experts to look your best. Experienced hair stylists and makeup artists can transform your look from basic to glam in a short amount of time. April Cornelius, a professional stylist and owner of the business Bridal Hair by April (www. bridalhairbyapril.com), says, “Usually the hair stylist and makeup artist work together and have an easy flow of the clients. They work in conjunction to create looks that are not easily executed by an amateur.” For those with hectic social schedules, Cornelius shares her secrets of hair success to ensure you put your best face forward at the next big occasion. PREPARATION AND PARTY COUNTDOWN Once the decision has been made to use a professional stylist to work on your hair for a special occasion, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure success. The first

step is finding a stylist with whom you will have a good rapport. Ask your regular salon stylist if he or she does special occasion work, or ask for a referral from a friend or family member. Cornelius warns against taking drastic measures with your hair within two to three weeks of the event. “Try not to schedule a cut or color right before the party,” she says. “Otherwise you may be stuck with a color or shorter cut than what you wanted. Also, spend time in advance to talk to your stylist about suggested cuts and colors that may enhance your hairdo.” Once you get your gown, hair accessories and veil, schedule a trial run so that the stylist can walk you through different options. “Hair styles are usually based on the type of dress you are wearing, and the stylist can suggest different things,” says Cornelius. “If you choose a style that requires more or longer hair, the stylist can often adjust by using temporary hair extensions that are not easily detected.” Cornelius notes that women with short hair need not worry about having a hairstyle that looks formal and fashionable. “Short hair is easy to style. I like to use side parts and maybe some height at the

crown. Using fun, stylish clips, curls, and headbands are additional ways to dress up the look.” THE DAY OF THE EVENT Few things can complicate a style further than not being ready for the stylist or using products on your hair that are not conducive to keeping the hair set. “Hair should not be washed any less than one day before the appointment,” says Cornelius. “It is essential that the hair be completely dry before the stylist gets there in order to make the process run more smoothly. He or she cannot spend extra time blowdrying the hair, and if it needs to be done it could incur an extra cost.” It is adviseable to use mousse or hair spray in the hair because they will help set the hairstyle. Avoid the use of hair serums or frizzfighting oils that can cause hair pins or curls not to hold well. In most cases, a stylist will come equipped with the items he or she needs. If you have discussed any special

hair accoutrements, such as rhinestones, beads or clips, have them at the ready. It can take about an hour to do a hairstyle, and if the stylist is working with more than one person for the party, it is important to be on time for your appointment. OTHER HANDY TIPS • If you have very curly hair and need it smooth, try going to a hair salon the day before and have it professionally blown out. • Bring an image to illustrate what type of style you want. Small pictures viewed on a mobile phone are not enough for a stylist to rely on. • Bring fun accessories to enhance your style. • Wear a button- or zipdown shirt for easy unrobing after your style is done. You don’t want to have to pull anything over your head. • Go to a stylist someone you trust has recommended. You don’t want to put a special event style into the hands of someone you don’t know.

CAN ADD

Professional Makeup Artists A LOT Many women likely have no experience with professional makeup artists. While one may not hire a makeup artist for everyday events, a wedding is an occasion that often warrants the expertise of a professional. A makeup artist has a wealth of information in makeup application, as well as knowledge of what looks best under the lights and flashes of a camera. For those spending several thousand dollars on professional photography, an investment in a makeup artist can help ensure the faces smiling back from the photos look their best. Many do-it-yourself brides do not use the right products and can end up looking washed out in photographs. Brides, especially those who

typically do not wear a lot of makeup, may not know how much to apply, resulting in a lackluster finished product. Here’s why the makeup artist can prove invaluable. PINPOINTS YOUR BEST FEATURES As an unbiased observer, the makeup artist will not see your flaws but rather will look at your best assets. SEEING THE BRIDE, NOT THE MAKEUP He or she is creating the best version of the bride. MAKEUP ARTISTS USE TRICKS OF THE TRADE They have an intimate knowledge of highlighting and shading they are capable of, through applying makeup, sculpting the face. KNOWS WHAT WORKS BEST ON ALL SKIN TYPES If you have oily or dry skin,

they can work to minimize any appearances of flaws. Also, a makeup artist will have many products and tools at the ready, reducing your need to shop prior to your wedding for all of the makeup essentials. GET A TRIAL RUN Sitting down with a professional gives you the opportunity to try on a few different looks and decide on which you prefer. Do-it-yourself brides sometimes leave makeup decisions to the last minute and really do not have a game plan the day of the wedding. ADVISING ON THE RIGHT TONE A common mistake made by do-it-yourselfers is choosing the wrong shade of foundation. Brides may

end up looking like a pasty vampire or someone who has spent too much time in the sun. A makeup artist can help find the right shade and blend it in so there are no apparent lines from the face to the neck and decolletage. GET THOSE TRICKY FALSE LASHES TO LOOK NATURAL Lush, full lashes really get eyes noticed, but many women are unsure of just how to apply false lashes. Lashes may be part of the makeup artist’s insider tricks, and he or she can apply them so no one knows they are not real. Hiring a makeup artist to apply your wedding day look could be a smart investment, particularly if you want to stand out and be noticed on your big day.

PUT A COMFORTABLE

FOOT FORWARD Some say shoes make the woman, but if they’re uncomfortable, shoes very well may break the

woman -- especially at a wedding. From the bride to the guests, choosing the wrong shoes could sideline you from dancing or cause pain through the night. A smarter step is to put just as much thought into the shoes you will wear as you

will into other parts of your wardrobe. Unless you’re wont to go anywhere without high heels, your feet may be unaccustomed to them for long durations of time. At a wedding, where it’s all about mingling and dancing, comfort should be considered just as much as style. That doesn’t mean you have to forego an attractive shoe just for something comfortable. It’s possible to have the best of both worlds. Here are some considerations. WEDGE HEELS Unlike other types of heels that put the brunt of the pressure on the ball of the foot, wedge heels distribute body weight evenly throughout the foot.

SANDALS Particularly for warmweather events, sandals can be quite comfortable and fashionable. Giving a peek of toe and ankle can be just as sexy as stilettos, without the pain. FLIP-FLOPS Many brides choose to don flip-flops under their gowns simply because they can be so comfortable. Flipflops needn’t be the run-ofthe-mill rubber kind found in the discount bin. They can be dressed up to match your gown or purchased with gemstones and other decor already attached. For those who prefer heels for photo ops and looking fabulous, consider bringing along a change of shoes just in case foot pain flares up later in the evening.

safe & smart ways to slim down

BEFORE YOUR WEDDING Many brides-to-be, and even some grooms-to-be, express concern about their weight in the weeks and months leading up to their wedding. Losing weight is a goal for many engaged couples, but it’s important that couples who want to shed a few extra pounds don’t sacrifice safety for the sake of slimming down. According to a Cornell University study of 273 women with a wedding day approaching, 70 percent wanted to lose more than 20 pounds before their weddings. However, reality indicates that a weight loss of 5 to 10 pounds is more attainable -- more so if the weight loss regimen is spread out over several weeks. The term “brideorexia” has entered the vernacular, and it is associated with brides who are taking extreme measures to lose weight. Taking laxatives, engaging in fluid-only diets and even using tobacco or drugs to serve as appetite suppressants are just some of the measures some brides have taken to shed weight before their wedding days. There is no magic formula to shed pounds, but there are certain ways to jump-start and maintain the process of healthy weight loss so brides can look slimmer and healthy

for their big day. EAT Although initial calorie curbing can help shed weight, eventually your body may adapt to your new eating habits or go into “survival mode,” which means conserving fat reserves. Researchers at Penn State University found that fasting signals to your body that it is being starved, triggering a lower metabolic rate. Brides-to-be should never cut out food entirely. Eating anything less than 1,200 calories a day will encourage the body to try to conserve energy by lowering its metabolism. Severe calorie restriction is not an effective way to lose weight. STEP UP YOUR EXERCISE REGIMEN Reducing food intake alone will not help you lose weight quickly. The goal is to burn more calories than you consume. Therefore, adding more cardiovascular activity to your routine can help burn calories more efficiently. According to a clinical study from researchers at Italy’s University of Padua published in the 2011 International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, eating a light meal before exercising helps you burn more fat and keeps your body burning fat even

Over 20

24 hours after the exercise. REDUCE SODIUM INTAKE Sodium doesn’t necessarily lead to weight gain, but it can make it appear so. Sodium contributes to water retention in the body, which may make you appear heavier or bloated. Cut back on foods that are high in sodium, especially as the wedding draws close, to reduce water retention. IDENTIFY SOURCES OF EMPTY CALORIES Fruit juices, soda and other beverages are often the culprits with regards to unnecessary calorie consumption. Therefore, choose your beverages wisely and limit them to

DON’T SACRIFICE SAFETY FOR THE SAKE OF SLIMMING DOWN water, teas and unsweetened drinks. If you want to drink fruit juice, consider diluting it. In addition, most alcoholic beverages have 100 calories or more. While it may be tempting to celebrate with wine, champagne and mixed drinks during your engagement period, your waistline may ultimately pay the price for such indulgences.

HIRE A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER A camera allegedly adds 10 pounds, a reason many couples panic about their wedding day. A photo is a 2D image of a 3D object. Therefore, the photo reduces depth perception and flattens an image, which may make some items look like they have more bulk. A professional photographer will know how to manipulate lighting and angles of the camera to ensure a more flattering shot. EAT SMALLER PORTIONS Oftentimes, it’s not a matter of what you are eating but how much. Most portion sizes served in restaurants or even at home are double or triple the amount that you should be eating. When in doubt, cut everything in half. FILL UP ON FIBRE OR PROTEIN Instead of resorting to pills to suppress an appetite, simply eat foods that will fill you up naturally. Highfibre foods will bulk up in the stomach and keep you feeling satiated longer. The same can be said for lean proteins, which take longer to digest, thus fending off hunger pangs. While losing weight for a wedding is many couples’ ultimate goal, the best way to tackle this task is in a healthy, responsible manner.

make or break WEDDING LOOKS

UNDERGARMENTS CAN As guests’ eyes are trained on couples come their wedding days, it is no surprise that both the bride and groom want to look flawless on their big days. While what they wear under their clothing — particularly for women — can impact how clothes fit and look. CHOOSING THE RIGHT BRA or supportive undergarments can play a crucial role in how a gown fits and whether or not brides achieve that pictureperfect look. Wearing the wrong undergarments can negatively affect a bride’s appearance and make her extremely uncomfortable. According to a study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph, a large number of women are choosing their bras incorrectly. The

international survey of 10,000 women found that 64 percent of them are wearing the wrong size bras. If women are wearing the wrong undergarments for everyday looks, it stands to reason that their wedding choices may not be spot on, either. UNDERGARMENTS SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO ALL FITTINGS as soon as a gown is selected. It is a good idea to ask the bridal store employees to suggest a bra or corset that will complement the gown and remain invisible beneath the dress. Some shops will make bras available when trying on gowns. Brides are not obligated to purchase undergarments where they purchase their gowns, but take note of the brand and

style and find a similar one elsewhere that fits with your budget if you don’t want to buy at the store. Pay attention to the gown’s fabric and how dense it is. Certain shapewear, including bras, that have a lot of boning in them to shape and support the body can show under bridal dresses without a lot of layers. ALWAYS TRY ON THE BRA WITH THE GOWN TO GAUGE THE FINISHED LOOK. You may opt for simpler and plain lingerie styles so that you will be guaranteed a seamless appearance. Nudecolored bras tend to be less noticeable than white. Some dresses with plunging necklines or backless designs may necessitate other options. Sew-in bra cups are another option that

can lend invisible support. Women with more ample busts may want to select gowns that will allow for bras with supportive straps to be worn. This way there is no worry about strapless bras or other style lingerie slipping down. In addition to bras, other types of shapewear can enhance certain areas of the body or downplay perceived flaws. Shapewear can smooth and pull in stomachs. Choose boy shorts or thongstyle cuts for a seamless finish. Shapers can smooth out bulges on the back, legs and hips, too. Bras and other shapewear can make a world of difference in how wedding attire looks and feels. Invest in some quality pieces that will highlight wardrobes to their fullest.

Simple solutions

TO SAVE ON YOUR WEDDING

Couples in the midst of planning a wedding often find themselves overwhelmed by the cost of such a meaningful yet expensive undertaking. The average wedding is as expensive as a new car or a down payment on a new house, so it’s no surprise many couples experience sticker shock when they first begin to negotiate with vendors.

But as shocking as the cost of saying “I do” in front of family and friends can be, there are some triedand-true ways to drastically reduce that cost without making the big day any less special.

GUESTS Many couples save the most money by reducing the number of people they invite to their wedding. Couples who come from large families may not be able to cut family members from their guest lists without causing a significant stir, so such men and women can look for other areas to trim. Professional colleagues and old acquaintances who you no longer keep in touch with are unlikely to be offended if they don’t make the cut, and removing them from the guest list can save couples substantial amounts of money. VENUE Perhaps no element of wedding planning is more open to negotiation than the venue where the reception will take place. Many couples now choose venues that can host both the wedding and the reception, and that can save couples the cost of booking two separate locations and transporting out-of-town guests from one location to another. Venues are typically open to negotiation with regard

to the price per person for the reception, and few will not have some wiggle room built into their initial quote. If young children and teenagers will be attending the wedding, negotiate

MANY COUPLES EXPERIENCE STICKER SHOCK WHEN THEY FIRST BEGIN. lower rates for their meals, as they won’t be drinking alcohol and therefore won’t cost the venue as much as adult guests. LOCATION Where a couple decides to tie the knot will have a significant impact on their bottom line. Certain locales, such as large cities, are more expensive than others. Couples who come from small towns may benefit from tying the knot close to home, as vendors tend to charge less the further they are from large metropolises. Waterfront venues, regardless of which city they happen to be in, also tend

to be more expensive than venues with less impressive surroundings. Couples willing to sacrifice city lights and breathtaking views of the water are likely to find more affordable venues for ceremonies and receptions. TIMING The timing of a wedding also affects a couple’s bottom line. Couples hoping to get married when wedding season hits its peaks, which is generally considered the months of May and June and then also late-September into October, can expect to pay substantially more than couples willing to get married at other times of the year. Couples also can save money by choosing to get married on Friday or Sunday nights or Saturday afternoon, when many venues charge considerably less per person than they do on Saturday night, which remains the most popular night of the week to get married. The cost of a wedding is considerable, but couples can cut those costs in several ways if they’re willing to be flexible and negotiate with vendors.

HOWclean TOyour jewellery porous jewellery, such as opals, pearls and turquoise, should only be cleaned in this type of solution to ensure they look their best. Select a mild cleanser, like a gentle clothing detergent or dish soap. Add a few drops to two cups of warm water and quickly dip the jewellery. Use a soft, dry cloth to dry and buff, then lay gems flat to air dry. If needed, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scour the stones gently. WHITE VINEGAR is another tool to use. Drop gemstones and gold jewellery into a small jar of vinegar for roughly 15 minutes. Agitate the jar to dislodge any debris. Remove the jewellery and rinse off under water, then dry off. For silver jewellery, use

Engagement rings are not only tangible investments in the future of a relationship, they’re also investments in a more traditional sense. Rings special symbols of love and fidelity that will be treasured for years to come. Properly caring for fine jewellery can help it retain its luster and beauty, as well as its value. The following are a few proper care and cleaning techniques. First EXAMINE all the prongs on settings, clasps and other components of the rings to make sure they are secure. If anything is loose, bring it to a jeweller for repairs. When cleaning, TRY SOAP AND WATER first before moving on to harsher chemicals if necessary. Soft,

CATERING

ALUMINUM FOIL to clean tarnished silver. Line a tray with a piece of crumpled aluminum foil and place your jewellery on the foil. Sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the jewellery, then pour boiling water over it. The tarnish will transfer from the jewellery to the foil. You may need to flip the jewellery so all sides come in contact with the foil. Remove and rinse with water. Otherwise, try a specialized silver cleaner purchased at the drug store. Many JEWELLERY STORES will clean jewellery free of charge, especially if you return to where the rings were purchased. Some use high-pressured steam to loosen dirt and debris, while others use jewellery cleaning

solutions. When jewellery isn’t being worn, it should be carefully stored inside a jewellery box. Place jewellery back in the same place each time so it does not get lost. Try not to leave expensive rings on the sink, where they are vulnerable to falling down the drain. Remove rings if you will be using your hands to mix messy foods or to work with paint, soil or other materials that might put jewellery in jeopardy. This prevents scratching and keeps particles from lodging in the stones or setting. Caring for jewellery can make it last a lifetime and beyond, allowing it to be passed down to other generations.

Connecting with

THE RIGHT CATERER Couples about to tie the knot often receive a list of recommended caterers from the venue hosting their receptions, and that list gives them a starting point for their caterer search right away. The following tips can help couples connect with the right caterer for their wedding reception. SEEK RECOMMENDATIONS Ask friends, family and professional colleagues about local caterers who might be able to meet your needs with respect to both budget and menu. COMPARISON SHOP Even if the first caterer you visit presents an incredible menu that’s within your budget, it still helps to comparison shop,

as the catering industry is competitive and you might be able to find an equally impressive caterer who can offer a similar menu for less money. If your favourite caterer provides an estimate that’s considerably more expensive than the competition, try to negotiate a lower price with that caterer. Caterers are often creative enough to find something to work within your budget, but you will never know if you do not attempt to negotiate. ASK IF THE CATERER SPECIALIZES IN A PARTICULAR CUISINE When speaking with various catering companies, ask each if they specialize in a particular type of food

and if they are used to catering specific types of events. If your reception has a theme, then find a caterer who specializes in foods that fit into that theme. Many caterers can effectively handle a range of events, from smaller soirees to more elaborate affairs, but knowing how much experience they have with your size of reception can provide some peace of mind. INSIST ON A TASTING Once you have found the caterer you want, schedule a tasting so you can experience the caterer’s menu firsthand. Many caterers offer an array of cuisines, and the tasting allows you to narrow down those choices so your menu is not all over the map come

We

Cater Weddings

the day of the wedding. During the tasting, ask if the caterer uses frozen or fresh foods when preparing meals. Fresh foods are more favourable than frozen, and the bill likely reflects fresh food prices, so do not hesitate to request that only fresh foods are served at your party. GET A CONTRACT A couple’s nightmare is inviting guests only to have something go wrong with the food. This stress is only avoided when hosts get a contract in writing that carefully details what the caterer is providing and when food will be served. Read it carefully before signing to ensure the cost and timing is clearly illustrated.

The importance of wedding day Thanks to the popularity of social media, some couples may overlook the importance of hiring a professional photographer for their weddings. Although there is something to be said for candid images captured on phones and personal cameras, the pictures a couple will cherish and look back on for decades are best supplied by a professional photographer. Leaving photos to chance by hiring an amateur photographer may be something couples regret down the road. Keep in mind, professional photographers use highquality equipment that will produce much better results than photos snapped on the average digital camera. Plus, the photographer has experience with posing, placement of arms and legs,

head tilting, and lighting, each of which ensures that the photos come out looking as good as possible. Professional photographers tend to have an eye for interesting angles to capture images that may be overlooked. He or she may

HELPFUL when planning floralHINTS arrangements When planning their weddings, couples may find themselves becoming experts on subjects they previously never gave much thought. Thanks to the cost of weddings, today’s couples must make each decision carefully. One of the big decisions a couple must make when planning their wedding concerns their floral arrangements. The right floral arrangements won’t break the bank but will add substantial aesthetic appeal to ceremonies and receptions. The following are a few hints to help couples achieve that balance of cost and look while adding a special touch to their special day.

WORK WITH A FLORIST YOU TRUST AND LIKE All florists are not the same, so finding one you can trust and will enjoy working with can make all the difference. Florists with significant wedding experience will no doubt make a host of recommendations based on budgets and preferences, so couples might be more inclined to listen to that advice if they are working with someone they trust. Ask relatives and friends if they can recommend any florists whose wedding work they are familiar with. CHOOSE IN-SEASON OR NATIVE FLOWERS Couples working with tight budgets may want to choose in-season flowers or those

native to the area where they will be tying the knot. In-season and native flowers won’t need to be ordered or shipped in from afar, which can be costly. In-season and native flowers tend to be more abundant as well, and the greater their availability the less couples are likely to pay for them. REPURPOSE FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS Another way to save on floral arrangements is to repurpose flowers throughout the day. Once bridesmaids no longer need their bouquets, use them to decorate gift tables or cocktail areas. Floral arrangements on display during the ceremony can be removed once you have

both said “I do” and moved into the reception area. GO BIG Some flowers simply bloom larger than others, and choosing such flowers may help you save money since you won’t need to buy as many flowers as you would if you were to go with smaller blooms. Once you find a florist to work with, discuss your options with regard to doing more with less. Many florists embrace the challenge to be creative within a budget. Floral arrangements can set the mood for a wedding ceremony and reception, and even couples with little or no experience choosing arrangements can end up with stunning displays.

HOT TRENDS in wedding cuisine Once a couple has officially tied the knot, the newly recognized man and wife and all of their guests will retire to a party room where they can mingle, dance and enjoy a good meal. The following are a handful of the more popular trends with regard to wedding cuisine. MINIATURE BITES Good things come in small packages, and when it comes to miniature versions of favorite foods, they may be right. Instead of large meals that fill guests up fast, they can munch on smaller bites of their favorite dishes. How about a piece of meatloaf topped with whipped mashed potatoes? Turning favorite foods into bite-sized adventures can add a touch of whimsy to the reception.

BREAKFAST FOR DINNER Some couples are circumventing high price tags for their weddings by choosing to hold the festivities at less expensive times of day. Brunch-themed weddings are a big hit: omelet stations, croissants and a bevy of other breakfast table fare can be enjoyed any time of the day. GOURMET COMFORT FOOD People love familiar comfort foods, but now gourmet comfort foods are shaking up wedding receptions. Mac-andcheese with gouda and brie or chicken pot pie with a puff-pastry crust are a few offerings that can add glamour to down-home cooking. FOOD WITH A SHOW Instead of passed foods

or buffet stations, couples are opting to make food an experience for guests. An oyster bar with a chef serving fresh seafood or a dessert master whipping up flambé is a feast for the eyes and mouth. INTERESTING BUFFET STATIONS Keep guests on their toes with various meal stations. A bountiful display of artisanal cheeses, fruits and breads will be a cheese lover’s dream. These stations also can be appetizing focal points around the room and ensure all guests get a bite of what they like best. FAMILY STYLE Rustic and informal weddings have grown in popularity. Rather than food being brought to the guests or participants lining up in

buffet lines, family-style dining allows guests to share conversation and pass the peas at the same time. FOOD AND BEVERAGE PAIRINGS Food-forward wedding couples are offering guests mouthwatering appetizers matched with a cocktail. A slider and a craft beer or a dumpling and a shot of saki are examples of this trend. NONTRADITIONAL ‘FAKE’ CAKES Instead of a multi-tiered cake or cupcakes, couples are now opting for something new. Desserts that mimic the look of cake, but aren’t quite that combination of sponge and frosting are trending. Crepes, pies, cookies, and doughnuts can add a creative spark to the cakecutting ceremony.

Choosing the right

WEDDING RECEPTION Planning a perfect wedding is no small undertaking. From scheduling venues and hiring vendors to tasting menus, lots of decisions must be made when planning a wedding. But when the pieces fall into place, the entire day can be magical. One of the final components of weddings are the favours guests will take home with them as mementos of the festivities. Favours are a tradition with a rich history. It is considered a symbol of good will to guests and finding the right one can take a little work. It is usually a good idea to find something that suits the theme of the wedding and is both long-lasting and practical. A couple’s budget should be considered when

choosing wedding favours. A couple may want to give their guests lavish gifts but should only do so if their budget allows. Finding favours that fit the theme of the wedding, as well as their own personalities and budgets can be difficult, but it can be done. BE CREATIVE Wedding favours can be just about anything. The more creative couples are, the more receptive their guests will likely be. For example, for an autumntheme wedding, fill mason jars with the ingredients for a spiced cake and give the recipe directions on a tag. For a summer wedding, gift guests with a sun and surf survival bag, full of sunblock, a beach towel and sunglasses.

FAVOURS COMPLETE THE THEME Some weddings follow a particular theme from start to finish, and wedding favours should stick with that theme. Couples who will showcase their love of travel on their wedding days may want to give guests keychains or purse holders that feature popular landmarks around the world. Those who are admitted beach bums may want to present a small fishbowl with sand and a goldfish inside, reminiscent of days at the seashore. GO TRADITIONAL Couples who opt for universally appealing favours can lean toward some popular options, such as silver cake servers, candlestick holders, decorative photo frames, or

engraved keepsake boxes. Aim for favours that have utility. Otherwise, favours may end up collecting dust on someone’s shelf. FOOD AND BEVERAGE GIFTS ARE FUN Food favours mean guests can enjoy their gifts and not have to worry about finding space inside their homes to display trinkets. Food favours can be lavishly decorated cookies, fine chocolates, petit fours, small bottles of champagne or cupcakes decorated like the wedding cake. Favours are often integral to remembering wedding celebrations. Selecting a favour that will be appreciated and fit with the wedding is often a fun and stress-free part of planning a wedding.

Tips for toasting

THE BRIDE & GROOM Wedding toasts are a tradition that many guests and wedding participants look forward to. An opportunity for maids of honour and best men to express their feelings about the bride and groom, wedding toasts often touch on the heartfelt and the humorous while shedding light on the relationship between the happy couple and the men and women they have chosen to play such significant roles at their wedding. While guests might enjoy wedding toasts, best men and maids of honour may be nervous about honouring the brides and grooms in such public settings. Those tasked with toasting can consider the following tips to make it a little easier.

KEEP IT BRIEF While there might be many things you want to say, try to express yourself as concisely as possible. Convey your relationship with the bride and/or groom, but avoid lengthy histories. While personal anecdotes that shed some humorous light on your relationship are great additions to wedding toasts, avoid going into too much detail, focusing instead on the parts of the stories that illustrate your feelings and generate a few laughs. AVOID BEING TOO FORMAL Even the most formal wedding can benefit from a toast that veers more toward the spontaneous. While you want to thank the parents of the bride and groom for hosting the wedding and

the guests for being on hand to celebrate, don’t feel as though you need to be especially formal. A less formal speech also may help calm your nerves. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE Practice your speech ahead of time so you are not reading from cards during the toast. Reading from a piece of paper is less likely to engage the audience than if you are speaking to them directly. Practicing will boost your confidence and make you more comfortable once you have the microphone in hand. STAY APPROPRIATE Humor adds a lot to wedding toasts, but make sure to clean up any humorous anecdotes so

they can be shared with all wedding guests, including kids. In addition, avoid stories that, while humorous, may end up embarrassing the bride and groom. SHARE WELL WISHES Before you raise your glass and ask guests to do the same, express some heartfelt well wishes for the bride and groom. Doing so is a fitting end to a tradition that’s meant to highlight the special relationship brides and grooms have with their maids of honour and best men. Those making their first wedding toasts may be nervous, but there are ways to calm those nerves and deliver heartfelt, memorable toasts that will be remembered for all the right reasons.

HONEYMOON planning made easy Weddings are one-of-akind occasions. Weddings also tend to be stressful, even for the most laid-back people. But a honeymoon gives the couple a chance to enjoy uninterrupted moments together and serves as a way to recuperate from the months and sometimes years of wedding planning. Because the honeymoon should be a way to unwind on a dream vacation, booking the honeymoon and setting an itinerary should not add to the pressure of planning, and the following tips should make planning a honeymoon a snap. RESEARCH YOUR DESTINATION Learn all you can about a destination before booking your honeymoon. Study the weather for the time of year you will be on your

honeymoon, and learn about currency exchange, local rules and regulations and other pertinent factors to determine the best places to visit. You do not want to be met with surprises that might compromise your trip upon arriving to your honeymoon destination. BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE The sooner you choose your destination, the faster you can begin the process of applying for passports, visas or other necessary documents. Booking early also guarantees you better seats on the flight and the ability to negotiate pricing. GIVE YOURSELF A FULL DAY BETWEEN THE WEDDING AND EMBARKING ON YOUR TRIP Scenes of couples

being whisked away to the airport right after the reception dwindles down are commonplace. But that doesn’t mean you need to leave right after the final dance.

Allow some breathing room to pack, deposit wedding gifts, return tuxedoes, and tackle any

other post-wedding tasks. Save the romantic “first night” as a couple for the honeymoon and enjoy a well-deserved night’s sleep. PURCHASE TRAVEL INSURANCE One way to alleviate the stress of planning a wedding is to ensure your honeymoon investment is protected in the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Travel insurance is a safety net that can come in handy. Speak with a travel agent or insurance agent about how to secure travel insurance for the honeymoon. PACK LIGHT Don’t burden yourself down with a lot of belongings. Chances are you’ll pick up new things and mementos on the trip, and packing light makes traversing airports that much easier.

SECRETS TO

a long & happy marriage Some might say a long celebrity marriage is one that endures the duration of the newly betrothed’s trip down the aisle. We’ve seen Britney Spears dissolve a marriage after 55 hours and Kim Kardashian call it quits after 72 days. It seems even money can’t buy matrimonial happiness. But some couples have been together for 50, 60 years and say they’re still as much in love as they were the day they spoke their “I dos.” What do they know that others do not? According to clinical psychologist and relationship guru Dr. Phil McGraw, “We all need to be flexible and to compromise in marriage, but you’ve got to be true to your core traits and characteristics, what I call your authentic self.” Some couples enter a relationship

projecting a persona such as a woman trying to fill the role of her husband’s nurturing mom or a guy playing the protector to his wife. Marriage is more of a partnership, and truth and trust are often at the basis of good marriages. Consider the following advice to make a marriage endure. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT MARRIAGE Some couples create an image of what they think marriage is supposed to be, which often goes “poof” once reality sets in. Even soulmates are bound to irritate one another from time to time. COUPLES SHOULD EXPRESS FRUSTRATIONS Bottling up frustrations can eat at a person and eventually destroy a marriage. Talking about the things that are bothering

Let us help make you the

vision in white you’ve always dreamed of being

you with your partner opens up a discussion and can help you work through things. DIVORCE SHOULD NOT BE SEEN AS A VIABLE OPTION Couples who want to bail on the marriage at every turn could be directing their energy toward divorce as the only solution instead of discovering ways to remove the cause of strife. Experts say that there are a few issues, like adultery, abuse and drug/alcohol addiction, that may be reasonable catalysts for divorce if personal safety and sanity is being compromised. MAKE TIME FOR ROMANCE It’s easily said but not so easily done. Too often married couples forget what it was like to date when all of their attention was spent on each other instead of the house, kids, work, etc. Happy couples find the time to

spend quality time with their spouses -- even if that’s only 10 minutes of alone time a day. PUT “WE” FIRST Many people operate on a “me” mentality. When you’re part of a couple, give more to your spouse than you take. If he or she is doing the same, you’re working collectively for the benefit of the marriage instead of yourselves. RESPECT EACH OTHER Often couples having troubles realize they treat strangers better than they treat each other. Good marriages are based on a foundation of respect and love. It’s easy to lose feelings of love if the respect is gone. Couples can realize that there are some thorns that come with the roses of marriage, and staying happy together does take work.
