WHY IS WELLINGTON WELLINGTON?
Written by Noah and JeffNoah and Jeff contacted the archivist at Wellington College UK, Caroline Jones, to find out more about the school’s history.
Have you ever wondered about ourschoolHouses?WellingtonUK openedtopupils,allboys,in1859. It was named after The Duke of Wellington. They have 17 houses in the UK whilst Wellington College Bangkok’s Junior School has4houses.

The first House is Wellesley The symbol forthisisapelican.Thisisthoughttobea random choice by the archivist, but she suggestsitcouldbebecausethepelican isaChristiansymbolofself sacrifice. The House itself is named after the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. He was born on 14th May, 1769 in Dublin, Ireland, and he died on 14th September, 1852. He faced Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo He served as prime minister twice between1828to1830and1834to1834 He wasgivenastatefuneralwhenhedied.
The next House is Stanley. The emblem for this is a unicorn This may be because unicorns are a well knownsymbolusedtorepresentpurity, strengthand power. It was Edward Stanley who first discussed creating a school named after Arthur Wellesley with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert after his death. Apsley House
The third House is Apsley It is named after the house calledApsley, thehomeoftheDukeofWellington. The emblemforthisisapineappleandwaschoseninthe 1970s when the house opened. It is thought that Apsley is represented by a pineapple because there were lots of stone pineapples adorning the roof of Wellington Caroline Jones also says, “It is rumoured this is because they were the Duke’s favourite fruit, but more likely they were just a popular architectural motif which symbolised prosperity” The house itself was given the popular nickname of Number One, London, since it was renowned by visitors who travelled from the countryside after the toll gates at Knightsbridge.TheDuke’scavalierstatuecanbeseen acrossthelivelystreets.
Our final House is Benson The symbol for this is a rose. Edward White Benson was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 until he passed away. He was the first master of Wellington College from 1859 to 1872.
Interestingly, the pelican and the unicorn are not the only animals included in Wellington UK’s emblems – they also have a house called Raglan which is represented by a leopard. This is the only symbol which has a link to a coat of arms – Baron Raglan’s coat of arms features a leopard and a dragon.
The colours of the Houses changed several times during the 19th Century. In the case of one Wellington UK house, Picton, they know that the boys in the House could not agree so they let the Housemaster’s daughter decide the colour.

Enjoy this extract below:
Albus Dumbledore didn't seem to realize that he had just arrived in a street where everything from his name to his boots was unwelcome He was busy rummaging in his cloak, looking for something But he did seem to realize he was being watched, because he looked up suddenly at the cat, which was still staring at him from the other end of the street. For some reason, the sight of the cat seemed to amuse him.
He chuckled and muttered, "I should have known."
He found what he was looking for in his inside pocket. It seemed to be a silver cigarette lighter. He flicked it open, held it up in the air, and clicked it. The nearest street lamp went out with a little pop He clicked it again the next lamp flickered into darkness Twelve times he clicked the Put Outer, until the only lights left on the whole street were two tiny pinpricks in the distance, which were the eyes of the cat watching him.
If anyone looked out of their window now, even beady eyed Mrs Dursley, they wouldn't be able to see anything that was happening down on the pavement Dumbledore slipped the Put Outer back inside his cloak and set off down the street toward number four, where he sat down on the wall next to the cat He didn't look at it, but after a moment he spoke to it "Fancy seeing you here, Professor McGonagall."

GO QUESTING WITH THE SON OF POSEIDON!
Reportor Ingwa has a boat trip planned for you to sail through historic universe of Percy Jackson.
This week I (Ingwa) have another book recommendation for you, Percy Jackson It is about a 12 year old boy who discovers his father is Poseidon the Greek god of the sea and that all the ancient Greek myths exist! He goes on a quest with a daughter of Athena and a satyr to save Olympus from the Kronos the King of Titans and God of time Percy Jackson is a mix of myth and modern, full of quarrelling gods, a magical ballpoint pen that could turn into a deadly sword, friendship, wit and bravery.
Here's a snippet from the first book Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief:
Thunder shook the building ‘We are not fools, Percy Jackson,’ Mrs Dodds said ‘It was only a matter of time before we found you out Confess, and you will suffer less pain ’ I didn’t know what she was talking about All I could think of was that the teachers must’ve found the illegal stash of candy I’d been selling out of my dorm room Or maybe they’d realized I got my essay on Tom Sawyer from the Internet without ever reading the book and now they were going to take away my grade Or worse, they were going to make me read the book ‘Well? ’ she demanded ‘Ma’am, I don’t ’ ‘Your time is up,’ she hissed Then the weirdest thing happened Her eyes began to glow like barbecue coals Her fingers stretched, turning into talons Her jacket melted into large, leathery wings She wasn’t human She was a shrivelled hag with bat wings and claws and a mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me to ribbons Then things got even stranger Mr Brunner, who’d been out in front of the museum a minute before, wheeled his chair into the doorway of the gallery, holding a pen in his hand
‘What ho, Percy! ’ he shouted, and tossed the pen through the air Mrs Dodds lunged at me
With a yelp, I dodged and felt talons slash the air next to my ear I snatched the ballpoint pen out of the air, but when it hit my hand, it wasn’t a pen any more It was a sword Mr Brunner’s bronze sword, which he always used on tournament day
Mrs Dodds spun towards me with a murderous look in her eyes
My knees were jelly My hands were shaking so bad I almost dropped the sword
She snarled, ‘Die, honey! ’
And she flew straight at me
If you are interested in seeing what happens next the series can be found in the library.
