In this month’s edition of Wellness News we look at different aspects of water in relation to health – such as how the acid/alkalinity of water affects your health; dehydration as a cause of illness; and on a more subtle level we review Lawrence Ellyard’s book and CD The Spirit of Water. The cover image this month includes a macro photograph of an ice crystal taken by the revolutionary Japanese researcher Dr. Masuro Emoto. Dr. Emoto believes he has proven that water has a soul or spirit (which he has called ‘hado’ ) and that what we think and say directly and immediately affects the hado or spirit of water. When he showed water the words ‘wisdom and compassion’, for instance, the individual crystals which formed when the water was frozen were beautiful. When he tested the ‘hado’ of polluted water or water shown words such as hate, the ice crystals were irregular and unformed. Water is essential for all life, without it we would perish within days. Humans are comprised of 70% water so it seems logical that the water we consume is pure and perfectly balanced to match the conditions within the body. Inside this month’s Wellness News we provide strategies to maintain a positive state of mind, calm disposition and strong health body to ensure that our own ‘hado’ or spirit is as beautiful and well-formed as one of Dr Emoto’s perfect ice crystals. ✦ Love and peace, Mandy

Crossword puzzles keep your brain young! Growing old is one of life’s few certainties. While the idea of playing the grumpy oldie may appeal to many of us – we all want to be sharp enough to enjoy the trouble we make. But, as we know, when we age our body deteriorates and our chances of developing dementia increase. This brings us to bridge and crossword puzzles, can these – and other mental exercises – keep us in good mental condition and help offset dementia? When it comes to the brain it could very well be a case of ‘use it or lose it’, says Henry Brodaty professor of psychogeriatrics at the University of New South Wales. The more we use the brain – by doing activities such as crosswords, sudoku, playing bridge or learning a language – the stronger the neural connections in the brain are likely to become. Studies have found people who are more active mentally (and they mean active, not just passively watching TV) are less likely to develop dementia in their later years. But before you head to the nearest newsagent or bridge club, researchers don’t know if it’s the brain exercises protecting people from dementia, or whether those who are already in the early stages of the condition avoid these activities. Regardless of the research both Brodaty and Alzheimer’s Australia recommend crosswords, playing cards and other brain exercises if you want to stay mentally sharp.

“Wellness is a connection of paths: Knowledge and Action”

Survivors see deadly cancer as lesson on life Life changed drastically for Carol Wallbank, 36, when she was diagnosed with aggressive cervical

cancer. But despite an intense emotional and physical journey, she says the disease changed her life for the better in some ways. Ms Wallbank shared this sentiment with many others among more than 200 people interviewed for the Live Life Now survey by Wire Surveys and the Cancer Support Association of WA. In WA, 166 cancer patients answered 25 questions about life and how cancer changed them. The “honest and open” results, released today, show the overwhelming importance of family and friends to those with the disease. More than six in 10 now believe in euthanasia and nearly 88 per cent agreed positive thinking made an enormous difference to their quality of life. Ms Wallbank’s journey began last November. Her first tests were clear but she was eventually diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer that needed immediate treatment. “It was absolutely gut wrenching,” she said. The vibrant small-business owner, who is in remission, says the disease was not all bad. She now took time out every day for herself, where before she was a workaholic. It also changed her perception of euthanasia after seeing late-stage patients suffer treatments and so much pain. Cancer Support Association of WA chief executive Peter Daale said the survey showed cancer patients had a profound understanding of core values and life’s treasures. ✦

which found organic food had no more nutritional value than ordinary food, saying the research failed to take into account chemicals in conventional food. Organic Federation of Australia director Eric Love said the study, commissioned by the British Food Standards Agency, did not look at the cancer-fighting antioxidants or the lack of pesticide residue in organic food.

“It’s misleading to the extent that the review criteria obviously seemed to be set up to make a particular point,” he said. “As a researcher, I know that I could probably put a review together that came out with the opposite conclusions.” The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reviewed all papers published over the past 50 years relating to the nutrient content and health differences

getting the acid/alkaline balance of your water right could be the key to health Image by Scott Stulberg

It’s often said that people spend more money on their health in the last two years of their life than the total of the rest of their life. In my experience this is so very true. I don’t want to waste time telling you how naughty you’ve been to fail to learn about your own health. God knows we are all so “busy” just surviving in this crazy world that oftentimes health takes a backstage position until it fails. It’s like my son’s car. He simply doesn’t change the oil. He believes everything lasts forever. At age 26, so did I. I have been asked many times to write down my understanding of acid and alkaline balance and its effects on health. This has usually been asked after I have spent an hour explaining it to someone, for the umpteenth time! So I’m going to give you my grand theory of everything about acid/alkaline balance now, and if you hear what I am saying, I know you’ll understand and act upon this most fundamental of all health secrets.

Why is acid/alkaline balance ‘fundamental’? Because this is about what happens at the microscopic level within our bodies; beyond the cellular level – at the atomic level. It’s all about electricity, and about what happens to create energy in your body at the atomic level. It’s about what doesn’t happen, what should happen, and what will happen if you follow what I am suggesting. Most people I talk to already know that we are too acidic, because of acidic foods, drinks, pollution, lifestyle, stress ... almost everything is acidifying including watching the news at six. We are told we need to alkalize, but what does that really mean? Many of us think that acidic water is just water with lots of acidic minerals in it, and alkaline water is water with lots of alkaline minerals in it – calcium, magnesium, potassium etc. But you can have acidic water with both acid and alkaline minerals in it; just more acids than alkalis, so it’s not quite as simple as you may have thought. Why am I explaining all this? Because if you can really understand this, you can begin a new way of thinking about your own and your loved one’s health. The conventional approach to alkalizing something like water has been to take tap water, with its mix of acids and alkalis, then add more alkalis. What’s wrong with that? You’re drinking a chemical cocktail – just to get your alkaline water. Let’s assume that we have water with no minerals at all; distilled for instance. Then we add some calcium. Now we have alkaline water. The pH of this water may have gone from a neutral pH 7 to an alkaline pH 8; ten times more alkaline that pH 7. Most of us learned all this in chemistry class – as long as you weren’t looking out the window like me! Do you know what pH stands for? It comes from French, and means “per Hydrogen”, which is a measure of the amount of Hydrogen in a liquid. Note; we’re not talking about the amount of alkalizing or acidifying chemicals in a liquid. No, we’re talking about the amount of hydrogen atoms. The chemicals or minerals just react with the water to create hydrogen atoms.

WELLNESS

July 2009

Why is this so important? Hydrogen fuels us. Hydrogen heals us. Hydrogen is our most essential nutrient. Hydrogen provides our life force! And pH equals amount of hydrogen in liquid, so it’s a measure, if you like, of available life force in a liquid.

Reverse Aging Sang Whang, that wonderful Korean American scientist and inventor, explains it beautifully in his groundbreaking book Reverse Aging. He says water has memory (we’ve seen this in Dr Masaru Emoto’s amazing crystal images and in the early works of homoeopaths) but he goes further; he says this memory is expressed as a measurable electrical energy. This energy can be measured in volts (or millivolts, because it’s always very small) and can be lost over time. When water has this electrical potential, it has the ability to cause the hydrogen atoms in it to assume two different forms. (Sang Whang’s book describes his discovery of ionized, alkaline water – and at age 75 is looking and sounding as good as I would hope to look at that age!) Stay with me, this is about as technical as I’m going to get!

7

“It’s often said that people spend more money on their health in the last two years of their life than the total of the rest of their life.”

When water has electrical energy, it causes the hydrogen within it to assume one of two forms. One is hydrogen that has a positive electrical charge. This water is ‘acidic’. The other is hydrogen that bonds with an oxygen atom and becomes negatively charged. This is the building block of life itself, and chemically, it is in the form of OH-. One oxygen atom, one hydrogen atom with this negative electrical charge. That’s ionized water. It now has energy it wants to donate to any compatible atom in your body. And it is called ‘alkaline’. In both forms, these ions or atoms, now have the capability to precipitate chemical reactions of other minerals in water. What has that got to do with your health and longevity? Nothing happens in our bodies without a chemical reaction. And every chemical reaction only happens when the ‘electricity’ between just two atoms is compatible. So we can say that we are a chemical organism – by courtesy of electricity. At the molecular level, way beyond the cells, trillions of electrically uniting and repelling is going on every millisecond of your life. It’s a veritable orgy of unity, and it’s happening right now in your body, it always has, and it continues until the balance of acid and alkaline reactions – the battle between them – is over. WELLNESS

July 2009

And what wins this battle of the ions? Acid – every time. We all know that our body acids take over after we die to break down the body. Let me tell you, they’ve been doing just that for many, many years before you die. They’re doing it now! Rusting, decaying, breaking down, burning, oxidizing – all a natural part of our balanced metabolism. So.. life as we know it is an internal ‘battle’ between positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charged atoms (ions). We can equally – but less accurately – say life is a battle between acid and alkaline, because that’s exactly what pH is all about. pH = acid/alkaline balance = ionizing = O.R.P. Coming back to water – when there are more H+ ions in the water than OH- ions, it will read as acidic. When there are more OH- than H+, it’s alkaline water. I’d like to pause here a minute and review what we have discussed. I’ll put it in point form: • Acid or alkaline liquid is measured as pH. • pH is a measure of hydrogen ions (atoms) • The more H+ in a liquid, the more ‘acidic’ • The more OH-, the more alkaline. • Acid and alkaline can be thought of electrically as ions of Hydrogen carrying either a positive or negative charge of electricity. • All chemical processes in your body are begun and completed when the correct electrical charge is found to match the electrical charge of another atom. Nothing happens without electricity. Electricity and chemistry, therefore, are the same in the body. Are we OK with that? If not, please spare another five precious minutes and read it all again, because what comes next rests upon your understanding so far and is the key to the secret of health and anti ageing that I’m communicating.

Services include: Traditional Chinese Medicine Cardio-imaging Stress Assessment Acupuncture

Okay. So water can have hydrogen ions in it. Are you OK with me using the word ‘ion’? An ion is an atom with an electrical charge. We can measure pH using litmus paper or an electronic pH meter. It will give us a reading of from 0 to 14, with pH 7 being neutral; neither acid nor alkaline. Or we can use an ORP meter which tells us a lot more. It tells us the O = Oxidizing or R = reducing or donating Potential of a liquid. That’s what O.R.P. means. Oxidizing means the ability to oxidize. To burn up. To rust. To break down, and the example I used earlier of a cadaver breaking down is an excellent one. It is oxidizing. Reducing is not as easy to understand. Scientifically, it means giving away, or donating, so if a liquid has ‘reducing potential’ it has the ability to donate energy to the body. The ORP meter actually measures the electrical charge of the water and if it reads above zero, it’s oxidizing (acidic and an ionic ‘robber’). If the voltage is negative it’s reducing (alkaline and a giver)! Now we can begin to see that we aren’t simply talking about choosing alkaline foods and drinks. We are choosing ways to ‘alkalize’ and ‘energize’, to add to our negative ion energy store and to neutralize the acidic, positively charged atoms in our bodies. Now we are getting very, very fundamental, and we are using water to carry this energy into the body. Why would this be so wonderful for you? Take a quick look at blood. As we know, blood has lots of water in it, and so it also has a ratio of the two types of water, the acidic and the alkaline as we discussed. When there are more alkaline ions, in the form of OH-, there is more oxygen in the blood, available to us as instantaneous fuel for life. In fact, if your blood is just a tiny bit more alkaline (from 7.3 to 7.45), it will be holding around 2/3 more oxygen!

WELLNESS

July 2009

9

I remember my first few weeks on ionized, alkaline water; I was like a kid of Christmas day; up at 3am looking for presents! I had just so much energy! Of course, once my system realized it had this new supply of oxygen, it put it to good use, modifying my early hour ‘high’ into sustained energy throughout the day, Is it possible that the lethargy you may be feeling could simply be the inability to carry oxygen in your blood? Can you also imagine the effect of proper oxygen levels in an athlete or sportsperson’s blood? I have had quite a few people asking me why they get such a boost from oxygen supplements (Hydrogen Peroxide). It isn’t hard to identify them as an acidic person, and without fail, those people who tell me that they get a boost from the supplements are all, in my estimation, trapped in an acid cycle lifestyle. I get no boost at all from any of the oxygen boost supplements, so I have concluded that I have the oxygen already available in my alkaline balanced bloodstream, and the people who get a boost are deficient, or acidic. It just makes sense! Isn’t this fabulous information? I am so grateful to have learned about acid/alkaline! We’ve all concentrated on finding the latest supplement or miracle cure to ‘improve our wellness when the real support work can be done using what we are primarily and overwhelmingly composed of.

What’s that? Water! We are 70% water – yet we’ve basically ignored it! So now we are going to look at how water can change us fundamentally. But to do this I need to let you see what happens in an acidic body – bearing in mind that unless you are the one in 100 who is naturally alkaline, this means YOU! Let’s just imagine we’ve wolfed down a Super sized burger along with a giant sugary soft drink. Even while it’s still in your mouth – your nerves are already sending signals to your belly. The chemicals in your mouth have sampled the pH of the food, and (don’t ask me how), your nervous system has told your stomach how much of this monster meal is ‘coming on down’. Most people still think the stomach is a bagful of acid into which the burger is going to just ‘ker-splosh’. It’s just not true. Your stomach is a vessel that is used to holding just the right amount of acid; not too much, not too little – as calculated by the mouth (and I suspect, the eyes – we’ve all heard the old saying, his eyes are bigger than his stomach!) You won’t see a big bag of acid down there. You’ll see a precisely controlled mish mash, evolutionarily trained to work with just the right amount to break down the food and pass it into the lower gut for absorption. What you also won’t see is the bicarbonate of soda that is also exuded from the bloodstream, and now coats the lining of the stomach to protect it from the acid. The acid, by the way, is also delivered to the stomach from reserves in the blood, known as the ‘acid buffer’. Now you’ve swallowed this humungous McMess, your body has had ample chance to understand that it just swallowed something with the potential to kill. It knows that if the pH of your blood falls to neutral 7 instead of its normal pH 7.35, you will go into a coma and die. Right now, courtesy of Fast Food and Drink Corporations, you body is being flooded with acids and your blood pH is beginning to fall. Your adrenals are screaming! They are telling you things are dire; but guess what?

“Alkaline water works as a powerful antioxidant. All alkaline foods will work to some degree, but it just makes so much sense that if your body is comprised of 70% water, and if water is everywhere in your body, then – to my mind – water in an antioxidant form is a far more efficient and economical mode of countering free radicals than food or pills.”

You’ve interpreted the message as the ‘hit’ you always get when you gulp a Coke. You’ve actually learned to love it! The adrenals are our early warning system. They are telling all of our systems to drop everything and source some alkaline minerals or negative hydrogen to neutralize this acid flood. Our major organ systems are hard wired to respond because this is a survival imperative. It’s been with you since Paleolithic times. You don’t digest dinner when a dinosaur is chasing you – you never have, because you’ve learned that death is the result of both scenarios. Continued on next page...

“If you take vitamin and mineral supplements, there’s 9 chances out of 10 you are wasting your money!” Scientists agree that the most effective way to neutralise your body’s acidity is by drinking alkaline water. “Of all the methods to reduce acids in our body, drinking alkaline water is the cleanest, easiest and most-effective.” Sang Whang. Author ‘Reverse Aging”.

This is the most advanced water alkaliser in the world.

Ian Hamilton, MD and Founder, Ionlife.

It’s not a water filter. It is a highlyintelligent health supporting device. The water it produces not only alkalises your body, it also actively removes excess acids. Not only that, it is ionised through powerful electromagnets, producing intensely oxygenated alkaline water teeming with anti-oxidants. It connects easily to your existing kitchen tap. tap

Every year in Australia we spend over half a billion dollars on vitamin and mineral supplements - twice as much as we spend on pharmaceutical drugs. What isn’t generally understood, however, is that 9 out of every 10 of us cannot assimilate these expensive supplements effectively because our bodies are too acidic. The inability of the human body to absorb essential vitamins and minerals when its pH level is not balanced in favour of alkaline is a well-known scientific fact. To maintain a balanced pH level, research scientists such as Dr Robert Young, PhD, recommend we follow an 80-20 alkaline/ acid diet. Unfortunately the average Australian diet is 90% acidic. “My foundation theory is that there is only one sickness and one disease and that’s the over-acidification of the blood then tissues”. Dr Robert Young. “All deaths from so-called natural causes are merely the end point of progressive acid saturation.” Dr George Crile, the “Father of physiologic surgery.

WELLNESS

July 2009 So what happens down there? Well, the ‘all systems alert’ firstly calls on the pancreas, because one of the pancreas’s jobs is to secrete alkaline chyle to neutralize the acids now mixed up with the food you have now tossed around in your stomach. The real problem is that you’ve been making a habit of this. Not only have you eaten a Burger, Fries and Soft Drinks for lunch, you’ve been downing beers, eating lots of sugar in fruit because someone told you that you should eat more fruit, and you’ve been stressed out at work. You’ve been robbing the pancreas so long that it’s just exhausted. It has nothing more to give. So the next port of call is body tissues. “Alkalis? Alkalis? Anyone?” “Sorry. None here.” Next stop is bones and teeth, and yes, we actually erode our own skeleton to feed our acid habit. In the meantime, because our blood pH is plunging dangerously, the stomach has been told to stop what it’s doing and let the body use its limited available energy to work on alkalizing this deadly acid flood, so what does it do? It dumps its half processed McLoad into the lower intestine. It’s acidic, it’s lumpy, it’s half digested, and the poor old pancreas, the gate keeper to the lower intestine, can’t do a thing to change it and fulfill its purpose of protecting the lower gut. It’s like a lorry load of toxic waste sneaking past a helpless sentry. About now it’s oozing into the intestine. And because you’ve been acidic for so long – (a byproduct of acidosis is constipation as the water from the stools is sucked out into the abdominal cavity to help move garbage) – your bowel is what doctors call “lazy”. It moves slowly because it’s full of hard faeces. And being acidic, it burns the sensitive absorbent villi on the intestinal walls as it goes, even to the point of bursting though the intestine wall, flooding the abdominal cavity with filthy, rotting, acidic McGarbage that only a few hours ago was sitting on a shelf in a fast food outlet.! So now we come to where all of the effects of excess acid conspire against us and our future health. But first, do you know what a free radical really is? It’s a positively charged oxygen atom or ion. And as we have learned it is oxidative. It breaks things down. It burns, it rusts. So as always, in a perfect body, things work perfectly. In this perfect body it has a perfect purpose as the perfect little janitor, moving about and reacting with garbage, toxins or putrefying matter to oxidize it and render it down to its basic components. Note that I said that’s what it does in a perfect system, but an acidic system isn’t a perfect system. As we have already discussed, virtually every system in an acidic body is under siege and working at far less potential than it was designed for. So things go wrong. They either over or under-perform, or they perform in a way they shouldn’t. So it is with our free radical system. In a state of siege, or acidity, it produces too many free radicals, (ah well, better more than not enough, folks!) and being eager little fully active critters, they go forth and oxidize – anything! Not just putrid food or waste, but healthy cells! That’s why our scientists say it is ageing us. They are acidic – positively charged, acting as a result of acid, in an acidic system. How could they possible work in the way they were designed? So what do we do about all this mess? We see the glossy advertisement for anti-oxidant capsules, tablets, exotic juices and the like and we spend six, seven, ten dollars a day gobbling them down.

11

What is it they have in those little capsules? They have chemical cages holding something we’ve now heard about; the H- hydrogen ion, the great donator, the giver, the lifesaver! Instead of drinking negative hydrogen loaded alkaline water at about two cents a litre, people are told they have to get their antioxidants in pills! What a setup! Companies make millions from the theory! But does water really work? I was attending an exhibition of health systems three years ago. I’d been on our stand for three days. Three days of non-stop talking, and when someone told me there was a stand where you could have your antioxidant ability tested, my first reaction was that I couldn’t possibly have a good reading. I was just too tired. However, it was free, and things were quiet, so I went to see what it was all about. Sure enough, there was the man, the computer and the test report coming out of a printer. He was trying to sell people on buying his brand of antioxidant pills, but he was quite happy to test me. “I’ve been talking non stop for three days.” I said. “Will it still work?” “That makes no difference,” he replied. “The probe measures the carotene in the skin, and that’s the best indicator of antioxidant ability.” “So what is a good score?” I asked. He explained that the top score was thirty on the computer’s scale, and that very few people got anywhere near that. I held out my wrist. He applied the probe and a minute later pulled the results from the printer, looking puzzled. “Are you sure you’re not on some form of antioxidant supplement?” he asked with a slightly suspicious frown. “None at all.” I answered. “Why?” “Because your score is the highest I’ve done all week. You are over the scale. You scored forty! What is it you do to get a score like that?” I looked him in the eye to watch his reaction. “I drink alkaline water.” In the years since that test, I get calls from clients from all over. It seems that wherever he goes with his machine, he finds one of our clients. “Guess what? I had my antioxidant ability tested! And.” they say. “And your reading went off the scale, right?” “How did you know?” they ask, astounded. So I DO know the alkaline water works as a powerful antioxidant. All alkaline foods will work to some degree, but it just makes so much sense that if you are 70% water, and if water is everywhere in your body, then – to my mind – water in an antioxidant form is a far more efficient and economical mode of countering free radicals than food or pills. I’ll stop talking about myself at this point; there are literally hundreds of stories that we have received over the last seven years about the effects and power of drinking IonLife water. These are all real stories from real people just like you; athletes, housewives, business people, doctors, naturopaths, families young and old. You’ll find just a few of their stories on our brochures and on our website, but more come in every week, and they are always amazing. Continued on next page...

Do you know the really cool thing for me? Yes, it’s wonderful water and it has great effect on me every day of my life. But it’s also clever water. It splits into acid water that I use to cleanse and remove bacteria from my food, my kitchen, my bathroom, my skin and hair. It also provides the alkaline water I have already described. But here’s the great thing. It costs me two cents a litre, and I NEVER have to buy another throwaway plastic bottle of water.

A Quick Comparison of Water Health Systems Now that you know what happens with ionized, alkaline water you will have a very good idea about other so-called ionized water. There are many, many water filters that frankly, wish they were ionizers. The difference is in the basic principle we have discussed about negative hydrogen ions; the superior antioxidant ability of the water. The only reason the water alkalizer works so well is that it actually splits water into two optimised forms: 1. The alkaline water we’ve talked about – ionized, negatively charged, oxygenated, microclustered superhydrating. 2. The ‘other’ water that is simultaneously separated from the alkaline water; acid, astringent, antimicrobial. This water is a wonderful addition to your home because it can be used as a non-chemical cleanser for food, for greens, for work surfaces, for windows, for hair and skin. This is the same water used instead of harsh chemicals at the massive Tokyo Fish Market to clean up daily. It is also used in many Japanese and Korean hospital and clinics. Only a true electronically controlled water ionizer splits the water this way. The alternatives you may read about all use a magnet in the water stream. Although this does create a little less positive ionization in the water, (not enough to become negative) it will quickly re-associate back to normal H2O when it leaves the magnet’s field. So there’s no lasting stream of OH- molecules as we discussed earlier and there’s no alternative acid stream output. Over the years of working with the water alkalizer, I’ve heard so many stories invented by other manufacturers about why their system is better, but it all boils down to one simple fact. They can’t alkalize like the systems we’ve been talking about. End of story. However ... there are some questions I hear again and again which I’ll share now...

Q: Does it remove fluoride? A: Fluoride is an acid molecule and the majority of it passes out in the acid stream. I am in possession of a test on a similar system from Sequoia Labs USA showing full removal. Fluoride is a sneaky molecule that can join with other molecules in the water, and so we can’t promise total effectiveness.

Q: Can I over-alkalize? A: The alkaline water isn’t loaded with alkaline minerals that will keep on alkalizing when in your body. It is loaded with sacrificial hydrogen ions that unites with positively charged molecules in your body. Then their work is finished. I’ve never seen anyone too alkaline. Alkalinity, unlike acidity, is managed by the body by immediate elimination. As always consult a health practitioner if you have health issues.

Q: How does the filter in it compare to normal filters? A: Most water filters are 1 micron exclusion rating. The Jupiter BioStone water filter cartridge in the alkalizer is 0.1 or .01 micron; ten or one hundred times more effective.

Q: Isn’t Reverse Osmosis the most effective water filter? A: Yes. It is so effective that it takes all minerals and everything out, making the water so ‘empty’ that it will begin uniting with CO2 in the air and turning acid. RO systems are not popular today because they waste approximately 9 liters per litre supplied.

Q: What about a distiller? That doesn’t waste water. A: True. A distiller doesn’t waste water, but it is very power-hungry and has the same problem of RO. It is also so ‘clean’ that it also ends up acidic. If you look at our own history, you’ll realize we have never had access to pure water and therefore our bodies are not made to process it. We need mineralized alkaline water because that’s what we are made of; saline, mineralized, alkaline water! Drinking pure water – remembering the fact that the body is always balancing everything – means it has to find minerals from it’s own reserves to mineralize the water you paid so much to process and drink!

Q: Lots of systems say they alkalize. A: Many do, but they do just by adding alkaline minerals – usually calcium – to the water as it is filtered. You still get all the acids in the water. ✦

Are you chronically dehydrated? By Matt Canham How do you know if you are chronically dehydrated? Again, many people have the belief that when they require fluids they will feel thirsty. Not so. By the time the mouth is dry and you feel thirsty, the body is well and truly dehydrated. You may also be surprised to know that a dry mouth is a sign of acute dehydration. You have gone beyond chronically dehydrated by that point. The body is a smart system though, and before you reach the point of dry mouth, the body will give signs as it begins the process of redistributing the available water. When the body is in a state of chronic dehydration, then fatigue/energy loss, constipation, digestive disorders, high and low blood pressure, stomach ulcers, respiratory troubles, acid/alkaline imbalance, excess weight and obesity, eczema, cholesterol, urinary infections, rheumatism and premature aging will take place. I can (and will) write an article on each of these problems, but they are all caused by being chronically dehydrated. Any way you look at it, having to go to the bathroom more than once a day is a small price to pay for feeling great and being healthy. The human body consists of 70% water, the brain consists of 80% water, the blood consists of 90% water. Let’s face it, we rely on water as the basis of our existence ” not soda, or juice or coffee, tea and beer. We need to ingest water in its purest form, free from any chemicals in order for our cells to remain hydrated and our body systems functioning as they should. How much water do you need? The best way to calculate your daily water intake is to take half your weight in pounds and convert it to ounces. If you weigh 160 lbs and work in an office, then 80 oz of water throughout the day is what you need to be drinking. If you are working strenuously outdoors in a hot climate, then you would need more. It should seem like you are constantly going to the bathroom and your urine should be clear. This is how you know you are properly hydrated. Every night you sweat as you sleep, so you need to repeat the same process every day of every month of every year you are on the planet. We know that a 1% loss of total body weight in water will result in a 10% loss in physical ability. When you consider at a temperature of 82 fa, water loss is 3 liters an hour, or more than 4% of total body weight, that means we can expect a 40% loss in physical ability. If you are working in that temperature, it increases. I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of places I’ve lived that get to 100. In such warm environments, you need even more water to stay hydrated. For your physical and mental well being, it certainly pays to consider both the quality and quantity of the water you drink.

Are you hungry or thirsty? If we need water, we can either ingest liquid or we can ingest food with water content. Our bodies will settle for either, but it is usually the food we go for instead of the liquid. Yes, in many cases, we mistake hunger for thirst, eating as much food as we need in order to get the water our body requires. The result of this is added stored fat ” assuming the foods consumed are processed or take away as most busy people are inclined to eat. And the more you eat ” you guessed it ” the more water you need to digest and eliminate waste from your body.

For many of us, when we hear the term dehydration, we immediately think of a man staggering in the desert, or an athlete having just finished a gruelling event. We are correct in a sense, however these are both examples of acute dehydration. You may be surprised to learn there is a far more widespread form ”chronic dehydration” that we should all be concerned with.

Our bodies are made of water and without it, we are lucky to survive 3 days. Despite this, so many of us live our lives with uncomfortable medical problems such as constipation, simply because we don’t drink enough water. Einstein once said, insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results. So, do it. Drink more water. Hydrate your cells. They will be happy and you will also be happy as a result.

Can our thoughts influence our health? By Katherine Ferris & Colin Ifield

Over recent years, many mainstream medical practitioners as well as alternative A Personal Cancer Story by Ibby Caputo

therapists have been endorsing the theory that negative thoughts and emotions adversely affect our health. We read more and more articles showing a connection between emotions and physical illness, the mind-body connection. Does the terminology, jargon or hype of many articles leave the average person confused? What does it mean to you? During many conversations with friends and family, it became clear that many of them are struggling with the concept. They find it hard to believe that stress or negative emotions influence some part of their body to produce chronic pain or that it can cause illness. What do you think? Let’s just experiment for a moment, let’s put it to the test. It will be interesting what you may notice when you close your eyes and let yourself think about a juicy lemon. Now let yourself get involved with the idea and think about slicing the lemon in half. Lemon juice dripping. Now bite into the lemon.... At the thought of biting into the lemon, how did you feel? Most people say they feel saliva increase in their mouth and a shudder or a grimace on their face. Watching a movie can have a similar effect. We all know that movies are imaginary, they are not real. Why is it that we cry, scream, or even laugh at the movies? The answer is that what we see, hear or think is constantly interpreted within our minds and produces a physical effect. A gripping action movie or thriller causes many sweaty palms and hearts pounding. So, if a movie can produce a physical reaction, why should some of our own thoughts act differently, in particular the unpleasant or negative thoughts? The fact is that the body reacts no differently to real or imaginary scenarios, it responds to a real threat or an imaginary threat in the same way.

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world. ~ Buddha

Most of us have no problems recognising our mind-body connection when we hit our thumb with a hammer, we know immediately that the physical pain will bring on a strong emotional response. Yet, when it comes to recognising the opposite, we are reluctant to accept that pain or illness may be influenced by our emotions. Some people refuse to believe that their emotions play a part in serious illness. Those that have been told that their illness has an unknown cause (autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, gastrointestinal problems etc.) somehow assume that it just happened and fate has dealt a nasty blow. Perhaps it’s the pollution they say, or it’s the diet, or maybe it’s hereditary, etc. That may be partly so, although we have to allow for the possibility that many health problems can also be caused by emotions. It is about time that we all realise that the mind and body are connected and inseparable. No longer should there be a stigma attached to health problems that are initiated in our minds. Emotions such as stress, anxiety, fear and constant worry, create tension and can cause an imbalance in the chemistry of our nervous system. This in turn lowers our immune resistance and we become more susceptible to a host of invaders compromising our health and wellbeing. Our thoughts and emotions can impact on our physiology. We should all give more consideration to what our thoughts are really doing. Because while we are re-living gloomy thoughts from the past or fearing and stressing about something in the future, our physiology is producing a response in our body as though it is happening now. It stimulates our nervous system to produce adrenalin, flooding our cells, while the endorphins (the feel-good chemicals) get depleted. We all know too much of any chemical is not good for our health; it is no different with natural chemicals in our body. If you have to work hard at anything, then work hard at being your own best friend and think thoughts that are helpful to you, not working against you. It is useful to remember the old saying heal the mind – heal the body. ✦

crooked

WELLNESS

July 2009

My friend Catherine recently told me about a 50-year-old friend

of hers who’d been a member of a sewing circle for 10 years and was now dying of brain cancer. “I labored and sweated over my crooked stitches,” the friend said. “And I always felt ashamed for not making the right-sized or -shaped stitches. As if making straight stitches actually meant something about me or my life. Now, the doctors say I have six months to live and when I think about the time I wasted worrying about those crooked stitches…” Most of the people I see spend most of their lives worrying about their own versions of crooked stitches – the size of their thighs, their hips, their abdomens. As if those things mean something true or real about their lives. As if when we get to the end of our lives, a number on a scale will mean anything at all. Recently I was in a car accident. We were burbling along, two friends and myself on our way to a party, when suddenly we got sideswiped by someone who ran a red light. After our car crashed into two lampposts, three other cars, and one stop sign, we came to a total standstill. I crawled out of the hole in the side of the car (that used to be the door) and although my ankle throbbed and my head felt as if a brick had fallen on it and I couldn’t breathe very well (but besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?), I was alive. And suddenly, just being alive was enough. Was miraculous. Suddenly nothing was important but the fact that I was still breathing. I needed a wheelchair for six weeks (due to a sprained ankle and a set of bruised ribs), and sometimes, when my husband was busy and couldn’t transport me from the dining room to the living room, I’d sit outside and stare at the feast in my backyard. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Just the usual clouds, trees, wind. Dog barking. Birds trilling. Wind blowing. The everyday jubilee I’d been passing on my way from desk to kitchen to desk as I worried about the stitches of work, family, errands, responsibilities. As I rushed frantically to keep up with the pace of e-mails, text messages, book deadlines. But since I had a concussion and couldn’t think clearly, and since my usual mode of running around was impossible, I had a good excuse to stop everything and contemplate the little things. Like living and dying. There is nothing like a brush with death to get a girl thinking. The first time I led a retreat after the accident, I asked my students to make a list of 10 things they loved most about being alive. They said things like: reading my daughter to bed, swimming with my son, holding my husband’s hand, being in the forest, taking a hot bath. Then I asked them what they would spend their time on if they knew they had a year to live. All of them elaborated on different versions of doing what they loved and of loving the people they cherished. Not one of them mentioned losing weight, although some of them did say that they would only eat what they really, really liked. Which brings me to the subject of dieting and weight loss and being fully alive. I read a study recently published by the New England Journal of Medicine in which 300 “moderately obese people” were followed on three different diets: the low-carb diet, the low-fat diet, and the Mediterranean diet (healthy fats, some dairy products, abundant fruit and vegetables). After two years of tightly controlled dieting, the dieters lost an average of 6–10 pounds. And it turns out that in the years after the study, everyone who participated gained back most of the weight they had lost. Two years of strict dieting and the end result is that you lose 10 pounds that you then gain back? Hmmm. There’s got to be a better way to spend your time.

17

There is. It is: Live the life you have. Love the body you’ve got. (This is not the same as “give up and binge.”) Part of the reason diets don’t work is that when we are obsessively focused on our weight, we are not focused on doing what we love. On loving what we love. We are thinking about what we will look like when we lose weight. We are spending our days on counting calories or fat grams, as if we have forever to be alive, forever to turn to what we truly love. When the college professor Dr. Randy Pausch’s last lecture swept through the Internet, when he spoke about having pancreatic cancer and six months to live, he spoke as a man whose priorities were clear. He wanted to spend every second he could with his family, he wanted his kids to have a visible record of his love. “I am maintaining my clear-eyed sense of the inevitable,” he said. “I’m living like I’m dying. But at the same time, I’m very much living like I’m still living.” Every one of us has a terminal illness – it’s called life. Although we want to believe that death only happens to other people, it only takes a second or two to realize that the D word is going to happen to us, too. A car accident. A serious illness. An iffy mammogram. Suddenly, it’s our life that’s at stake. Our life whose stitches are numbered. Ask yourself how you want to live. Ask yourself what you would do with your time if your days were numbered (because they are—you just don’t know what the number is!). And, oh, ask yourself what and how you would eat. While you might be tempted to say, “I’d eat cheesecake all day and pizza all night because who cares about clogged arteries or cholesterol?” ask yourself if that is true. If life is so precious, why would you want to spend one minute making yourself sick? Why would you spend even 30 seconds of it causing yourself discomfort and therefore taking your attention away from what and whom you love? When I was 19 years old, my college roommate and I were on a rickety Italian flight from Pisa to Rome. We were convinced the plane was going to crash and in the last few minutes of the flight, I figured that as long as I was going to die, I might as well die eating chocolate. Despite the turbulence, I managed to polish off the entire five-pound box of chocolate I’d bought for my mother. If I had died, I would have gone out burping and in a sugar coma. Not exactly a graceful exit. Rather than focusing on dieting and depriving yourself, which we all know does not work, turn your attention to what you love. Because, if you love your life, you want to take care of your body. If you love your life, you don’t want to spend it making yourself sick or uncomfortable. Even if you knew you only had six months to live, you might eat differently, you might even begin exercising every day, but it wouldn’t be because you were ashamed of your body. It wouldn’t be because your thighs weren’t thin enough or the stitches of your life weren’t good enough. It would be because you didn’t want to miss a minute of the time you had left. Why wait? Why not cherish every crooked stitch of your life? ✦ A groundbreaking author and workshop leader, Geneen Roth was one of the first to explore the pivotal links between emotions, eating, and spirituality. Her seven books include the New York Times best-seller When Food Is Love and her latest, The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It. Geneen believes your relationship to food, money, and love is a perfect reflection of your relationship to life itself, and that the way to transform those relationships is to be open, curious and kind to yourself.

Did you know...

Gazpacho is a cold Spanish tomato-based raw vegetable soup, originating in the southern region of Andalusia. Gazpacho is widely consumed throughout Spain, neighboring Portugal (where it is known as gaspacho) and parts of Latin America. Gazpacho has ancient roots. There are a number of theories of its origin, including as an Arab soup of bread, olive oil, water and garlic that arrived in Spain with the Moors, or via the Romans with the addition of vinegar.

800ml tomato juice 1 cup iced water 5 TBS olive oil ½ clove garlic 3 410g cans tomatoes 1 leek 1 peeled cucumber 5 TBS lemon juice 1 capsicum 6 TBS chopped parsley Salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper

Method 1. combine tomato juice, iced water, oil and lemon juice in large soup tureen 2. Process cucumber, capsicum, garlic, parsley and leek with undrained tomatoes. (I use a stick blender) 3. Season with 1tsp salt, a pinch of cayenne pepper (or to taste) and generous freshly ground black pepper. 4. Chill before serving. To Serve Dice additional cucumber, capsicum, chopped onion and croutons in separate bowls. NB The soup is delicious especially in any weather, particularly when it is hot . I prefer it to be fairly thick and not absolutely smooth. However, you can add extra tomatoes or more juice for more quantity and adjust taste. The extra ingredients used “to serve” can be added to the bowl of soup after it has been blended.

Spice it up

Be sure to add turmeric to your curries. The main

healthful ingredient in turmeric is curcumin which gives turmeric its yellow colour. Curcumin is a phytochemical which helps thwart cancer by switching off proteins that cause cells to multiply and by inducing cancer cells to self-destruct. The spice may also reduce risk of Alzheimer’s, psoriasis and arthritis.

Eating green, leafy vegetables may reduce the risk of skin cancer recurrence by as much as 55 percent, according to the results of an 11-year Australian study. The study, led by Dr. Jolieke van der Pols of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, found that participants who ate at least three servings of green leafy vegetables per week - such as spinach – more than halved their risk of skin cancer recurrence. The researchers found that leafy vegetables such as spinach and silverbeet (chard) were linked to the reduction in skin cancer risk, especially for patients who had a history of the disease. According to van der Pols, the vegetables contain a wide array of healthy vitamins, minerals and anticancer nutrients, which may explain their ability to reduce cancer risk. “Other research that has looked at individual nutrients haven’t found very clear evidence [of skin cancer risk reduction], so it might be that actually the combination of nutrients as they occur normally in the foods that we eat, actually have the effect on skin cancer,” van der Pols said. “Green leafy vegetables are good sources of folic acid, vitamins A, C and E, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, and other components which may help boost the skin’s natural defense against damage caused by UV rays,” she said. “This new evidence suggests that an increase in consumption of these foods may help to reduce the risk of skin

cancer recurring among those with a previous history by up to 55 percent.” Consumer health advocate Mike Adams, author of “The Healing Power of Sunlight and Vitamin D,” called van der Pols’ research “groundbreaking,” and said the best sunscreen is good nutrition. “The conventional cancer industry has so far refused to acknowledge any serious link between diet and skin care, preferring to push sunscreen products sold by corporations that donate heavily to the cancer industry,” Adams said. “The truth is finally coming out, and spinach isn’t the only food with this sunscreen effect,” he said. “Astaxanthin is a nutritional supplement that’s even more powerful as a sunscreen.” Dr. van der Pols said consumers should boost their intake of leafy, green vegetables, in addition to taking precautions when in the sun, such as wearing a hat and protective clothing. Your Body’s Many Cries for Water In this book which is written for both medical practitioners and the lay person with little medical knowledge Dr Batmanghelid M.D., explains the fundamentals of physiology and the importance of the role of water in preventing and reversing disease. As a result of extensive research into the role of water in the body, the author, a medical doctor, believes that he has found chronic dehydration to be the cause of many conditions including asthma, allergies, arthritis, angina, migraine headaches, hypertension, raised cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, depression, and diabetes in the elderly.

Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj M.D. Published by Global Health Solutions. 2nd edition July 1995. ISBN-10: 0962994235 This book by a highly respected M.D. explodes a medical atom bomb – an entirely new paradigm for the cause and prevention of many degenerative diseases!

Dr. Batmanghelidj has identified the crisis calls of the body for water -- pain, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more. He has discovered the key to a longer, healthier, and more vigorous life. In this book he shares his medical breakthrough that many people put their minds and bodies under intolerable and unnecessary stress and become sick simply because they do not drink enough water. Unintentional dehydration leads to illness and painful, degenerative diseases that can be prevented, treated, and cure by drinking plenty of water. You will learn how to use water to: • Prevent and reverse premature aging • Eliminate pains including heartburn, back pain, arthritis, colitis pain, anginal pain, migraine headaches • Cure asthma in a few days, naturally and forever • Cure hypertension without diuretics or other medication • Lose weight effortlessly and naturally, without strict dieting. The following excerpt, from Chapter 2 of Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, describes the vital role water plays in the healthy functioning of the human body. The new scientific truth about the human body that will empower people to become practitioners of preventive medicine for themselves is as follows: It is the solvent the water content that regulates the activity of all the solutes (solids) that are dissolved in it. Every function of the body is monitored and pegged to the efficient flow of water. “Water distribution” is the only way of making sure that not only an adequate amount of water, but also its transported elements (hormones, chemical messengers and nutrients) reach the vital organs. In turn, every organ that produces a substance to be made available to the rest of the body will release it into the “flowing water.” Adequate water intake, therefore, achieves paramount importance. This new paradigm permits an incorporation of the “fourth dimension of time” into scientific research. It will facilitate an understanding of the damaging effect of an establishing dehydration that persists for some time. It will make it possible to forecast the physiological events that will lead to disease states in later years, including what at present appear to be genetic disorders. It will transform the present “shot-in-the-dark, symptom-treating” approach to the practice of medicine into a scientifically accurate medical art; it will make preventive forecasting possible. It will establish excellent health, and reduce health care costs to individuals and to any society that fosters its spread. Since water shortage in different areas of the body will manifest varying symptoms, signals, and complications now labelled as diseases, people may think that water cannot be offered as a natural solution. Water curing so many diseases? No way! Thinking thus, they shut their mind to the new possibility of preventing, even curing, so many “diseases” that are dehydration-produced. It does not occur to them that the only remedy for conditions that occur when the body begins to get dehydrated is water and nothing else. A number of sample testimonials are published in the book to open the eyes of skeptics to the fact that the greatest health discovery of all time is that water is a natural medication for a variety of health conditions. ✦

The Spirit of Water Guided Meditations This collection of guided meditations are narrated by Fremantle Reiki Master and Hado Instructor Lawrence Ellyard. This CD is not really about water, but the relationship between thought, prayer and matter. ‘Hado’ is the essence or the subtle vibration of all things, including water. The Spirit of Water features the voice of Lawrence Ellyard. The meditations are spacious, gently narrated and do not have any musical backing. The meditation stand alone and are not necessarily sequential – for instance the self love meditation is to be done while gazing into a mirror and includes a series of affirmations to awaken the feelings of self love and worth. The CD starts off with the Hado Smile Meditation which brings your attention to the physical body and helps you direct ‘hado’ around the body for healing and self awareness. The first meditation on the CD is the ‘Hado Smile’ Get your anatomy book out for this meditation because you’ll need to know where your major organs are located in your body! This meditation brings your attention to the body to send the healing power of your own smile and the positive vibration to all parts of the body. Soothing and calming. Next is the Hado Prayer Meditation which brings awareness to the positive in your life, and helps you get in touch with the feelings of love and gratitude which the following meditations are based on. The Self Love Meditation is a series of affirmations to influence and change the way you are feeling. Awakens the feelings of love and gratitude within. The Love and Gratitude Meditation is beautiful. Visualise ice crystals of love and gratitude growing in your heart and radiating out into your body and experience the body’s water being flooded with the feeling (hado) of love and gratitude. Areas of illness and disease are transformed by love and gratitude crystals which dissolve into the body’s water, leaving you feel blissful. I loved this meditation because of the visual imagery of the ice crystals.

The Spirit of Water Guided Meditations’ Audio CD By Lawrence Ellyard Six guided meditations to use for self-awareness, self-healing, healing others and cultivating positivity and purity in water.

The Love and Gratitude for Healing Others follows the same basic structure as the previous one, but this time the healing energy is directed outwards towards family, loved ones and even enemies! As the focus of your healing intent is others this meditation brings about a generosity of spirit and a real warmth and feeling of love for the people you share your world with.

Water Blessing Meditation The final meditation on the CD is a Water Blessing designed to imbue water with hado vibration. It can be done with your hands around a glass of water or visualising a body of water. It is a bit like doing reiki with visualisation. It is quite an elaborate meditation for a single glass of water and you wouldn’t do it every time you were thirsty, but it would be interesting to do this meditation on a larger scale. Ellyard’s book of the same name, The Spirit of Water does investigate the potential of Hado to transform polluted water sources. ✦

The Fog That Follows Chemotherapy By Jane E. Brody

As more people with cancer survive and try to return to their former lives, a side effect of chemotherapy is getting more and more attention. Its name is apt, if unappealing: chemo brain.

Nearly every chemotherapy patient experiences short-term problems with memory and concentration. But about 15 percent suffer prolonged effects of what is known medically as chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment. The symptoms are remarkably consistent: a mental fogginess that may include problems with memory, word retrieval, concentration, processing numbers, following instructions, multitasking and setting priorities.

Nearly every chemotherapy patient experiences short-term problems with memory and concentration. But about 15% suffer prolonged effects of what is known medically as chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment and commonly called ‘chemo brain’.

In those affected – and doctors at this point have no way of predicting who might be — it is as if the cognitive portion of the brain were barely functioning. Symptoms are most apparent to high-functioning individuals used to juggling the demands of complex jobs or demanding home lives, or both. The chemo brain phenomenon was described two years ago in The New York Times by Jane Gross, who noted that after years of medical denial, “there is now widespread acknowledgment that patients with cognitive symptoms are not imagining things.” Some therapists have attributed the symptoms of chemo brain to anxiety, depression, stress, fatigue and fear rather than direct effects of chemotherapy on the brain and hormone balance. Yet when such factors dissipate, the symptoms may not. Recent studies that took other influences into account and analyzed how patients’ brains worked before and after cancer treatment have shown that cognitive effects of chemotherapy are real and, for some, long-lasting. There are now two new books on the subject: “Chemobrain” (Prometheus Books), by Ellen Clegg, an editor at The Boston Globe, and “Your Brain After Chemo” (Da Capo Press), by Dr. Daniel H. Silverman, a leading researcher in the field, and Idelle Davidson, a health journalist and former breast cancer patient. Dr. Silverman heads the neuronuclear imaging section at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center. Ms. Clegg’s book, the more technical of the two, delves into details of research and may confuse readers about the validity of her subtitle, “How Cancer Therapies Can Affect Your Mind.” The more user-friendly book by Dr. Silverman and Ms. Davidson, subtitled “A Practical Guide to Lifting the Fog and Getting Back Your Focus,” acknowledges the controversy but cites both anecdotal and research reports showing that the problem exists independent of other factors that can beset cancer patients.

One Woman’s Symptoms Barbara D. Wick, an insurance consultant in the Chicago suburbs who has been in and out of treatment for ovarian cancer for six years, says her cognitive problems have subsided somewhat since her last round of chemotherapy ended six months ago. Among the symptoms she experienced were these: • Inability to focus on anything with any complexity or depth. • Inability to retain information, especially names. • Difficulty retrieving words and substituting wrong words (“chicken” for “kitchen”). • Difficulty analysing anything other than simple questions. • Inability to follow instructions when cooking or knitting, for example. In their book, Dr. Silverman and Ms. Davidson quote a photographer treated for breast cancer at age 34, who said: “Task completion is where I’m most affected cognitively. It’s as if the follow-through feature has been removed from my brain.” Another patient, Patrick, a diagnostic radiologist treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 58, had to quit his job when he realized he was making mistakes. “I would lose my place and have to go back and start over with an exam,” he said. “I tried to explain a procedure to a patient and I got very confused.” At the supermarket, Patrick and his wife put groceries in the car, then he drove off without her. He forgot pots on the stove until the smoke detector went off. Upset by the loss of his former self, he contemplated suicide. After psychiatric treatment, the depression lifted, but the confusion did not.

Searching for the Causes It is not yet clear what happens during cancer treatment to cause symptoms of chemo brain. Some experts think some anticancer drugs could have direct toxic effects on neurons, although most drugs do not penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Some evidence from animal and human studies suggests that cancer treatment can cause biochemical or anatomical changes in the brain, or both. Dr. Silverman reports that metabolic imaging studies have shown that “people exposed to chemotherapy have impaired brain function in certain regions compared to others who have not been exposed.” Tim Ahles, director of neurocognitive research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, is looking into a possible relationship between chemotherapyinduced cognitive changes and DNA damage in breast cancer survivors. Several symptoms of chemo brain resemble effects of estrogen loss after menopause caused by surgery. Since treatments for breast and ovarian cancers can suppress the production or action of estrogen, loss of estrogen may account in part for chemo brain in women. Among women past menopause treated with an aromatase inhibitor that prevents the body from making estrogen or with tamoxifen, which blocks the action of estrogen on breast cancer cells, those on the aromatase inhibitor, which results in much lower levels of estrogen, “had significantly poorer performance on learning and memory measures,” Pauline M. Maki of the University of Illinois in Chicago reported. Hormonal changes can also occur in men undergoing cancer therapy. In a study of men with prostate cancer treated with drugs that depleted androgens, treatment with an estrogen improved their performance on memory tests. Controlling for brain function before cancer treatment begins can help determine cause and effect. In one study, cancer patients took a battery of neuropsychological tests before starting chemotherapy, three weeks after completing treatment, and again one year later. Although a third of the patients had signs of cognitive impairment before therapy began, the number jumped to 61 percent after treatment, and half remained impaired a year later. ✦

A Remedy for ‘Chemo Brain’ Your diet affects the brain chemicals that influence your mood and behavior, the thought processes and emotional reactions. The B vitamins in particular ae important fo enhancement of mental function and may be helpful in relieving ‘chemo brain’ symptoms. To get the best result from taking vitamin B supplments you may want to try a new type of vitamin B1 being produced, called Benfotiamine. It is a fat-soluble version of vitamin B1. This new form of vitamin B1 can be taken orally in large dosages and it will not flush out of the body the way ordinary Thiamine (vitamin B1) does. The result is that by taking Benfotiamine the blood stream levels of vitamin B1 can now be greatly increased, nutritionally supporting the body to rapidly and effectively decrease or eliminate the symptoms of Neuropathy. Also available is Methylcobalamine (called Methyl B12). This is the form of vitamin B12 that can be directly utilized by the body and is available in the quantities nutritionally needed by the body to repair itself. Methyl B12 can be taken orally and is immediately available to the body much like injectable vitamin B12.

These supplments are available toether in a ‘Nerve Support Formula’ from www.mcvitamins.com.

A Genius says goodbye to his friends... July 2009

Mr. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the great Latin American writer has said goodbye to the public life due to complications in his health: lymphatic cancer. He has sent a letter to his friends which has been made public so we are all able to share his gentle wisdom. Below is a translation of the letter...
