publisher's letter In the healthy indulgence issue we explore the hedonistic, pleasurable and potentially dangerous concept of indulgence. It’s a widely varied notion and is certainly something that can be achieved in a healthy way. With the rush of today’s frenetic world, we often forget to stop and enjoy simple indulgences like watching a beautiful sunset or spending good quality time with a loved one. Instead, we often move through life at such a pace, that we’re vulnerable to unhealthy indulgences such as drinking one too many after a long day in a bid to quickly relax and unwind. While everyone may have different ideas on what actually constitutes indulgence (you may see weekly Spa treatments as a necessity while someone else may see that as an indulgence), it’s important to fully assess what’s really important to you and where your priorities lie. One thing science agrees on is personal relationships are invaluable to mental health and wellbeing. So taking time out to spend with your loved ones is a necessary indulgence that also helps you stay away from unhealthy behaviour. Listening to your body is a good place to start, so you can indulge its needs in a positive and healthy way. This month we outline the hidden dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and what your body misses out on when you take medication to counteract overindulgence. We explore ways you can nurture yourself during pregnancy as you begin a journey of lifetime love and care. We delve into the psychology of comfort food and why we crave the things we do; we navigate the pantry for quick and easy beauty recipes and tell you how to turn your bathroom into a home Spa. Time can also be regarded as an indulgence, on this score we urge you to get in touch with your spirituality by bringing elements of your belief and faith into your home space. As usual, this issue is packed full of ways to continue your journey towards complete wellbeing. I’m going to spend this next month focussing on my priorities and embracing my spirituality – in short, I plan to indulge my mind and body with a large dose of healthful living. Yours in wellness Dr Sean Gomes, Co-founder

WE TRIED IT

In Cape Quarter there is a shop called Ozone Health with life sized pods you climb into and spend half an hour getting more oxygen into your body. We went along to see what it’s all about. The pods close you in and are heated to 40 degrees but your head is outside so it’s not claustrophobic and you can adjust the temperature. Apparently our cells love oxygen and need a continuous supply to feed the chemical reactions that generate energy, detoxify and produce new components. When the body is flooded with an activated form of oxygen our health and general wellbeing can be enhanced greatly. While we were there we spoke to some of the regular customers, everyone seemed highly enthusiastic and all had stories to tell about how the oxygen treatments had been a life saver in a multitude of conditions everything from bad skin to serious diseases.

In this position you are better placed to give to others. Find your pleasure and don’t hold back in rewarding yourself with a healthy dose of indulgence.

TASTING ROOM

Morgenster’s stylish tasting room, designed by Revel Fox, is on the banks of a tranquil, reed lined dam.

“Best in the world”

Meet Morgenster Morgenster (“Morning Star”) dates back to 1711 and is a wine and olive estate in Somerset West with a manor recognised as one of the great houses of the Western Cape.

did you know? Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in the Helderberg ward of Stellenbosch has 50 hectares of olive groves. Its 30 000 trees cover 14 different Italian varieties originating from the north, the south and the islands of Italy.

8

I

n 1992 it was bought by an Italian industrialist, Giulio Bertrand, as a retirement home. However Bertrand’s Italian appreciation for good food and wine coupled with the farm’s potential made him rethink retirement. Instead he decided to produce world class Bordeaux-styled wine and the best olive oil in the world.

Morgenster produces internationally acclaimed wines and premium extra virgin olive oils and olive products which reflect owner Giulio Bertrand’s philosophy of ‘Quality without compromise’.

everything you need to live life well

He started by importing 2000 modern cultivar olive trees from Italy to establish in the Estate’s nursery. Morgenster now has over 50 hectares of different trees for the production of extra virgin olive oils and delicious table olives and olive pastes. In pursuing his objective of excellence Morgenster has elevated the whole South African olive oil industry. It supplies tens of thousands of olive trees a year to other farms, provides equipment and farming consultancy services and brings in international experts to run judging and oil appreciation courses. In August 2012 Giulio Bertrand was honoured by the SA Olive Association

Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil is blended from 14 different varieties of olive trees grown on the estate, giving it a much acclaimed multi-layered taste which each year receives awards in top international competitions.

BALSAMIC VINEGAR The only product featuring the morning star on its label that is not grown and produced on the Estate is Morgenster Balsamic Vinegar. Each bottle is individually numbered and bears the certification of the “Consorzio Aceto Balsamico Di Modena” which verifies that it is produced in Modena, Italy, using traditional methods. The concentrated must is aged for three years in wooden casks where it intensifies, sweetens and takes on the characteristics of the particular wood used.

OLIVE OIL! Olive oil has considerable health benefits for the whole family and research continues to endorse how it can help the body stave off conditions like high blood pressure, high levels of blood cholesterol, osteoporosis, breast and other cancers and rheumatoid arthritis. A Mediterranean style diet rich in olive oil reduces the risk of type II diabetes. Olive Oil Times (www.oliveoiltimes.com) reports that a prominent cardiologist has recommended that adults take at least two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil each day to boost health and well being.

According to the 2010 - 2013 editions of the Flos Olei Guide to the world’s best extra virgin olive oils, Morgenster is the best extra virgin olive oil in South Africa and one of the top seven in the world for consistent quality at an exceptionally high level. It received 97 points out of a possible 100 for the fourth year in a row by the Guide’s panel of expert tasters. In 2006 L’Extravergine judged Morgenster to be the “Best Blended Olive Oil in the world”. Apart from its Balsamic Vinegar made in Italy, Morgenster’s oil and olive products have been kosher certified.

HEALTH FROM

On the patio, under the grape trellis, you can sip their wines and taste their olive products while you watch busy water and reed birds and follow the flight of grey herons silhouetted against the majestic Helderberg mountain. Morgenster cellar stores treasures of excellent vintages. We so enjoy sharing our visitors’ pleasure as they discover the complexities of each bottled masterpiece and compare progress of our labels over several years. The extra virgin olive oil tasting leads your nose and taste buds down fresh and intriguing paths where you learn to judge excellence in an olive oil and find out its health and culinary secrets.

TIP GOOD EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL WILL SMELL LIKE FRESHLY MOWED LAWN, ARTICHOKES, GREEN HERBS OR GREEN APPLES. THE TASTE WILL BE CRISP AND FRESH AND IT MAY TICKLE THE BACK OF YOUR THROAT. IN BAD OIL YOU WILL SMELL RIPE BANANAS OR OTHER OVERRIPE FRUIT, CHEESY OR WINEY AROMAS. IF IMPORTED OLIVE OIL IN CLEAR BOTTLES SEEMS CHEAP IN RELATION TO LOCAL OIL IT IS PROBABLY INFERIOR!

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Inferior, old olive oil just doesn’t have the same health benefits so it’s important to know how to buy and judge good quality extra virgin olive oil. The quality of South African olive oil and its attendant health benefits is assured by the SA Olive Association which monitors local quality. Look for the SA Olive sticker and consume your oil within two years of the stated date of harvest.

Look for terms like “Extra Virgin Olive Oil”, indicating it has no defects and its fatty acid level is less than 0.8% per 100g of oil. “Virgin Olive Oil” has a free acidity, expressed as oleic acid, of not more than 2 grams per 100g of oil. “Pure Olive Oil” is a blend of about 90% refined oil and 10% virgin oil. When olive oil has defects or high acidity it needs to be refined to make it edible. “Pomace Oil” is extracted with the aid of high heat and solvents from olive waste and then refined. It is regarded as dangerous to health.

Most people can effectively imagine the taste of food just by looking at it or even reading ingredients.

MOOD FOOD

But, although psychology plays a major role in our comfort food craving, researchers have found food also affects your brain. In a controlled study, one group of participants had comfort food-type fat injected into their stomachs and subjected to unhappy music and sad images for 30 minutes. Other participants were given a placebo. The results showed that those who received the fat had much lower feelings of depression and less activity in the brain area associated with melancholy than those who didn’t ingest fat. While that may sound like a case for a weekend of food indulgence, studies also show that reaching for the cookies whenever emotions are low can become addictive and can also heighten risks of dementia (not to mention weight gain and subsequent health dangers).

did you know?

COMFORT JUNKIE

High-fat diets are linked to depression and high levels of the stress hormone, corticosterone.

Outwit an eating impulse by knowing the psychology behind craving and use it to indulge in a healthy way.

did you know? Many people’s idea of comfort food isn’t actually all that unhealthy (it differs between age groups, genders and cultures) – but the most popular comfort food worldwide is ice cream.

12

M

ovies often show us the iconic scene of the heartbroken waif scoffing back ice-cream to lessen the pain. Ice-cream or worse – raw cookie dough coupled with over processed canned whipped cream and huge bags of potato chips. The urge to wolf down high-carb, fatty and sugar-filled food to fill a void can sometimes be overwhelming. Certainly a chocolate bar sometimes feels like a hug in a wrapper. Most people can effectively imagine the taste of food just by looking at it, or even reading ingredients. Do your taste buds jump to attention when you imagine biting into a freshly baked scone covered in melting butter, rich strawberry jam and clotted cream? Do they shrink back in everything you need to live life well

horror at the image of brightly green, freshly steamed broccoli starkly placed on a bright white plate? If that’s the case, then you’ve actually been programmed that way. Food engages all the senses and is intricately associated with feelings and memories. If your grandmother’s house was always filled with the heavenly scent of baking and you felt safe and comfortable there, then the smell of baked goods will instantly transport you to a feeling of safety and comfort. The taste and emotion associated with certain types of food is highly influenced by time period, culture and your individual experiences.

MOOD-BOOSTING

COMFORT SOUP >

WHAT DO YOUR CRAVINGS MEAN? Need a hug? Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (a neurotransmitter) that’s also contained in the drug ecstasy. But, for a healthier alternative to this feel-good substance, it’s also found in beans, lentils, nuts, seed, raw pink salmon, Italian salami and in milk.

Generally when you’re feeling low, your craving will include ice cream, creamy sauces or pizza; here’s why. Tyramine is a stimulant that’s found in cheese and l-tryptophan (mostly found in milk) but stimulates serotonin production when it’s combined with carbohydrates. Choline, also found in milk, has a soothing effect. Get your tyramine from avocados or olives, indulge in lobster (or other seafood) for your dose of l-tryptophan (also contained in watercress, raw spirulina seaweed and numerous whole grains).

RECIPE

MOOD-BOOSTING

COMFORT

SOUP A salty food craving may just mean your adrenal glands are taking strain – this is a sign of high stress. Instead of reaching for a packet of chips, opt for sushi as seaweed is high in magnesium, which is effective for reducing stress levels. Berries are filled with vitamin C and antioxidants, while almonds are high in vitamin B2, vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc – all of which are good for beating stress.

A craving for carbohydrates may just mean you’re feeling insecure or fearful. Whole grains contain magnesium and tryptophan (which assists in producing serotonin). If you’re keen to stay away from the carbs, try soy, milk, bananas, poultry, cheese or nuts.

Move to a new groove But, although most people drool at old favourites like macaroni and cheese (so many British social clubs serve what’s known as ‘nursery food’, like cottage pie and bread and butter pudding), fusion food is fast becoming the gourmet buzz with tastes and flavours that delight the senses and provide meals that are nutrient rich and healthy. You can train yourself against bad-for-you food cravings by ensuring what you put in your mouth is going to have the right effect on your brain.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

When you need some loving reassurance, rather than eating something unhealthy, try this comfort soup.

Imported cultures are added to milk and carefully stirred by hand. The whey is manually drained and poured into cheese moulds to harden before resting in the ‘ripening room’. No chemicals or artificial additives are used. From start to finish, the process is a labour of love; far removed from the disconnected methods of industrial foods.

If you regularly take any drugs, prescription or street drugs, it is essential to take a good Multi-vitamin with Minerals, Antioxidants, Vitamin B complex and Essential Fatty Acids.

ALCOHOL

Regular over-indulgence in alcohol can create a thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency and this can lead to what’s known as Korsakoff's syndrome, the symptoms of which include apathy, lack of muscle coordination, coma, confusion, paralysis of eye muscles, amnesia, tremor and lack of insight into your state of mind and behaviour. Additionally, alcohol can contribute to a deficiency in pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), folic acid and glutathione. Because alcohol is also damaging to your liver and pancreas, both of which are involved in metabolism and nutrition, an imbalance of fluid, calories, protein and electrolytes is also caused.

TIP HYDRATE WELL FOR AT LEAST A DAY BEFORE INDULGING IN ALCOHOL AND IF YOU DRINK REGULARLY, BE SURE TO SUPPLEMENT WITH A B-COMPLEX

OVER THE DOSE did you know?

Many people who are drug or alcohol dependant are in a constant state of dehydration. This in turn creates a deficiency in minerals such as sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, iodine and fluoride.

18

OPIATES

Everyone experiences moments or periods of indulgence, particularly on weekends, special celebratory days or holidays. Indulgence is a sensual word, bringing to mind luxury, a bit of naughtiness and pleasure. But indulgences can have more severe consequences than not feeling quite yourself the next day.

W

e live in an instant gratification world where self-indulgence isn’t frowned upon, it’s actually encouraged. There’s a bohemian-like delinquency to this type of behaviour and it even extends to the type of medicines we take on a daily basis, like antidepressants or even antacids. Drug abuse involves not only illegal drugs but drugs sold over the counter and misuse of prescription drugs. You may have a health condition that requires you to take a prescription drug with harmful side effects like Cortisone. In this case make sure you eat properly, and take Vitamins and supplements to protect your body against the side effects. Whether by choice, for everything you need to live life well

recreational purposes or because of an addiction, if you are taking drugs there will be consequences. Most people are aware of the consequences of indulgence – from headaches and nausea to weight gain and bad skin. But it’s not commonly known that some substances cause your body to become depleted of other substances important for wellbeing. It is important to acknowledge the risk factors and if you feel in danger of addiction to check your family for a history of addiction. Before you give in to a craving, take a moment to consider what also happens when you indulge in these common, albeit somewhat taboo substances:

Opiates include substances such as codeine, heroin and morphine. They have an effect on your gastrointestinal system and a common symptom of abuse is constipation. Withdrawal leads to diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting which can cause an imbalance of electrolytes such as sodium (causing confusion, fatigue weakness), potassium (muscle weakness, spasms and cramps) and chloride (dehydration, muscle weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite). Dopamine and serotonin are also affected and depleted. Heroin use can lead to elevated levels of potassium, which can lead to severe kidney damage. Morphine addiction results in calcium deficiency.

TIP

VITAMIN D DECELERATES MORPHINE DEPENDENCY

STIMULANTS

These include crack, cocaine and methamphetamine and ecstasy (MDNA). Stimulants induce serotonin and dopamine production, in fact cocaine stops your brain recycling dopamine so stores of it are upped and this is what causes the euphoria experienced. But, your brain quickly gets used to this and can be rewired permanently, meaning your reward centres go out of whack. Generally, such stimulants cause you to stay up for days at

a time and the lack of sleep is disastrous. They also reduce your appetite, but that can lead to poor nutrition and dehydration, causing electrolyte imbalances. Memory problems are common and may be permanent if you are a long-time stimulant user. Cocaine restricts blood flow and if you ingest it, it can cause bowel gangrene. MDNA also suppresses vasopressin, which is an antidiuretic hormone and this causes water intoxication (a severe depletion in sodium levels causes excess water to enter cells, making them swell – this is particularly dangerous in terms of brains cells due to the constraints of your skull). Cocaine, Coca and Crack effect the brain, heart, lungs and kidneys. They also increase blood pressure and heart rate which can lead to an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). When addicted to any of these substances professional rehabilitation which includes a multi level programme of nutrition, diet, exercise and lifestyle is important.

did you know? Use of addictive drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and nicotine, affects food and liquid intake behaviour, taste preference, and body weight.

MARIJUANA

Smoking marijuana causes a surge in serotonin levels initially, but then leads to depletion in this vital mood chemical. The oily toxins (cannabinols) in dope are broken down slowly by your body because they are fat soluble and are stored in your cells (including your brain). These toxins can stay in your body for months or even years. They’re released into your system during certain activities (such as exercise) and you experience a hint of what was and craving begins. An effective detox programme is essential to rid your body of all marijuana’s toxins completely. Marijuana also increases appetite and you’re more likely to reach for calorie rich, nutrient poor food. Cravings can be controlled by minerals like Chromium. A high potency Vitamin B complex will reduce stress, whilst a smart Multi-vitamin (like PhytoMulti from Metagenics) and Omega 3’s ( Essential Fatty Acids) will support all body functions. Vitamin C is very important as even cigarette smoking destroys Vitamin C. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Being sensually fit By Glenn-Douglas Haig We’ve got it all wrong everybody… I coach countless people on being the fittest they can be, and they usually assume it requires ‘single-minded determination’ and ‘focus, focus, focus!’ Well I challenge you to keep that kind of attitude up for longer than a few weeks – a month at most – without feeling like you’re missing out on something, or even actually neglecting another part of your life. We are not designed to be single-minded, to narrow our focus down for longer than a few hours a day… too much of which leads to the slippery slope of obsession. Yes, occasionally obsession can lead to greatness: read Van Gogh, Thomas Edison and Dr. Frankenstein – but that kind of greatness is usually accompanied by a string of broken relationships, social ineptitude and a missing ear. We are in fact designed to be well rounded (and I choose that phrase on purpose) in our attitude to life, to absorb and experience as much of this earthly paradise as possible, to roll in it, to sink into it and to breathe it into our very essence. We should be sniffing, tasting, feeling, caressing, singing, inhaling and listening our way into life; instead we’re thinking, thinking, thinking and thinking our way across its surface. My challenge to you is to see your life as an opportunity to indulge in every sensual experience that you can dream of… without feeling guilty! Yes, that all-too familiar monster keeps poking its useless head into moments that should be savoured and enjoyed, wagging its gnarled finger in our faces and dulling the edge of what should be an exquisite experience. I for one am so over it. I believe the secret is to work hard at becoming a sensual fitness freak. Start training yourself to enjoy indulging in an occasional sensory experience, so that you gain the full benefit from it. Much like your muscles and your mind, your senses will dull without use… Find what you need to do to vaporize the guilt and step into a life of sensory awareness – you’ll feel like a kid again!

This confirms earlier research. The American College of Cardiology reports that even apparently “healthy” people can be more than twice at risk of dying from a heart attack if they gain fat, especially around the tummy area, which is often caused by a sedentary lifestyle. Other research has reported that insulin resistance, a condition where the body fails to properly respond to insulin, is a common link between a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain and diseases that can cause earlier death, such as heart disease and some cancers. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining. It’s the same with your health; the time to take care of your health, is while you are still healthy, not after disease has struck. If you sit a lot, and notice you are gaining weight, especially around the abdominal area, we suggest these health-protecting nutraceuticals, before disease strikes: TO HELP YOUR BODY RESPOND BETTER TO INSULIN: A unique B-like vitamin. Take 1 capsule twice daily, after meals. To further enhance insulin sensitivity, you can use Chromium Polynicotinate and Magnesium Glycinate (both twice daily, after meals) and Alpha Lipoic Acid (Dual R-Form) (once daily). Also known as co-enzyme B5, helps reduce cholesterol and visceral fat in the abdominal (tummy) area. Visceral fat is the most dangerous type of fat because it surrounds the internal organs and actively produces toxins that raise cholesterol and damage blood vessels. This can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Take 1 capsule twice daily. TO BOOST YOUR VITAMIN D LEVELS FROM AN INDOOR LIFESTYLE:

Vitamin d3 500iu

Vitamin D is synthesised in the skin from exposure to sunlight. People who live an indoor lifestyle are often lacking in this important vitamin. Low vitamin D blood levels are associated with a number of diseases, including heart disease, insulin resistance and some cancers. The D3 form of vitamin D is more effective than the D2 form, as found in some of the other vitamin D supplements on the market. Take 1 tablet daily, or as directed by your health care practitioner. If you feel compelled to join us in helping them, you can do this in many different ways. They have charity shops you can volunteer your services, donate goods to them or shop at.

Help the Rural Child’s main operation is the charity shops. There are five charity shops in Cape Town – two bookshops and three clothing shops. Delightful clothing shops have a wonderful selection of clothing in excellent condition at very good prices. The bookshops have a wide variety of books including novels, reference books, children’s stories, Africana and science fiction. Visit one and you will see.

Help The Rural Child is a Charitable Trust whose purpose is to turn otherwise invisible rural children into happy and secure citizens. Few people give much thought to rural children, but they are out there, struggling each day to go to school often without food and proper clothing. This charity helps support the running costs of the Goedgedacht Path out of Poverty Rural Youth Centres (POP), situated in the Swartland area of the Western Cape. The Centres give these often forgotten children a chance to dream of a life without hunger, where they can be happy, educated and eventually make a contribution to their country.

The shops function because of the generosity of people that care. Help the shops by donating clothing for men, women and children (in good condition), handing over books you don’t need anymore and any kind of bric a brac (ornaments, glassware, kitchenware), toys, CD’S and DVD’S. Either drop off your unwanted items or call the number below and they will collect. There is also a drop off bin outside the Wellness Warehouse store in Kloof. Should you wish to volunteer, even if it is for 4 hours a week, contact them on the same number.

EDIT

Your emotions and thought processes can directly impact your behaviour and quality of life. Brink says that the benefits of mindfulness have been known and practised for over 2,500 years; however, with science now proving the philosophy,

Modern, and western, lifestyles dictate that we are very goal orientated. Every situation demands a reaction. We need to achieve in order to be something, to deserve our place in the world. Very often, goals become the only driving force in our lives – getting from this

It’s rare for a test for coxsackie to be ordered, however, due to the length of time needed to complete the test – diagnosis is far more likely to be made based on presenting symptoms such as blister-like rash on hands, feet and mouth in a child with a mild fever. The latest research, to boost your health

OMEGA YES Once again science has proven that omega-3s have a positive effect on reducing the risk of heart disease. Since the 1970s, when Greenland Inuits were studied in terms of heart disease and their regular diet (consisting of a lot of fish), human studies have consistently shown the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on heart health. To assist in preventing heart disease, it’s recommended that you increase your consumption of fatty fish or omega-3 supplements. For vegan or vegetarian options, omega-3s can be sourced from plants, algae and yeast, although a recent study indicated that these sources aren’t quite as effective as omega-3s from fish in protecting your heart.

SHOULD YOU BOTHER? We’re told all the time that it’s important to have yourself screened for cancer because early detection gives you a better chance for effective treatment. However, one study questions whether this is true, specifically for people who don’t have a life expectancy longer than 10 years after screening takes place. It may sound as if that means you should simply give up as you get older, but it’s based on research that indicates there is a significant time lag between screening and the benefit of that screening. The research centred on people over the age of 40 who had been screened for breast or colorectal cancer. The results showed that three years passed before one breast cancer death was prevented for every 5,000 women screened. On average it took 10.7 years before one death was prevented for 1,000 women screened. With colorectal cancer screening, it took 4.8 years before one death was prevented for 5,000 patients screened, and on average, 10.3 years to prevent one death for every 1,000 people screened. Although it's good to be on top of your health and know what you may be at risk for, these statistics do give pause for thought. Source: BMJ

DEPRESSED MOMS There’s been a lot of research into the

TRIPLE WHAMMY If you suffer from high blood pressure, you’re at risk of heart disease or stroke. You may have been prescribed blood-pressure-lowering medication or a diuretic to reduce this risk. You may possibly have been prescribed both. Combining the two could be more effective and allow you to take lower doses of each, potentially lowering side effects. But, says a new study, if you also take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as aspirin, you may be putting yourself at risk of acute kidney damage. The risk is at its peak during the first month of treatment with all three types of medication; however, if you are regularly taking all three, you need to be aware of potential risk and

effects of taking antidepressants while you’re pregnant. In fact, the subject was well covered in Health Intelligence. The general consensus is that it’s down to the individual and if your depression is mild to moderate, other treatments (such as cognitive behavioural therapy) may be adequate. However, depression itself can be a danger to both you and your baby, so it is something that needs to be addressed. Other than possible side effects such as congenital abnormalities, hypertension in newborns and neonatal withdrawal syndrome, a study has now shown that antidepressants taken during pregnancy don’t increase the risk of a baby

also real and imagined possibilities in the future. This is the layer at which many adults spend much of their time. According to Brink, mindfulness is a practice that allows you to become more aware of not only yourself, but also the external environment and how it all affects you – it helps you recognise the three layers of experiencing and how your mind builds on direct experience with labels and stories. These interpretations can lead you so far away from direct experience that you become disconnected from the truthful reality. Mindfulness teaches you to become childlike in a sense, with a curiosity about yourself and the world around you in a way that offers insight and wisdom. Everything you experience in life is framed according to what you believe and perceive. Those beliefs and perceptions influence the

Driving for many is an automated action, so your mind isn’t concentrating on the act of driving. It becomes a ‘mindless’ activity. This is just one example of how out of touch humans can become with their actual emotions and physical selves. Just understanding how easy it is to be completely unaware of yourself goes a long way to becoming more aware.

STAR SUPPLEMENT What's the big deal about Omega's?

O

mega’s are getting so much good press lately, the benefits quickly stack up to a point where you may wonder why they aren’t just added to our drinking water. We take a look at some of their attributes. Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fat (that’s the good fat) that’s an essential acid – that means your body doesn’t make it, but it’s important to your health. There are three types of Omega-3s, ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). You can get them from the food you eat, but sometimes it’s not possible to get enough. ALA is found in flaxseed (the best source of this omega-3), hempseed, soya beans and oil, pumpkin seeds, canola oil, linseed and walnuts. DHA and EPA is found in seafood, algae and coldwater fish like salmon and tuna (however, many medical professionals warn against eating too much fish because of the possibility of toxins such as mercury found in fish).

But, why take them? Here are just some of the numerous reasons to take a good Omega-3: • • • • •

• • •

Reduce plaque build-up in your veins, helping to prevent blood clots. Lowers triglycerides and raises good cholesterol levels. Reduces joint tenderness and stiffness. Improves bone health by increasing calcium levels. Insulates brain nerve cells allowing better inter-brain communication and improving mental health conditions such as depression, ADHD and bipolar. Alleviates skin disorders such as psoriasis and acne. Reducing inflammation in your bowel, so alleviating symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Reduces pain associated with PMS.

Omega-3s impact behaviour and cognitive function (they’re especially important during foetal development) and ward off inflammation, which is seen as a major factor in numerous lifestyle diseases. If you’re deficient in these essential essentials, you may experience fatigue, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings, poor circulation, poor memory and depression.

Good idea

You may feel you’re getting enough Omega-3 through your diet, but did you know that the majority of people ingest way more Omega-6 than they should (from vegetable oils) and that Omega-6 oils compete with Omega-3s to be metabolised by your body. The solution? Go easy on Omega-6 and take Omega-3 in a high concentrated dose in a form as pure as possible to ensure the healthiest balance. Studies show taking lower concentrated Omega 3's show no lowering of triglycerids and cholesterol levels while higher concentrated Omega 3's do. Look for Omega sources with 80%+ concentration.

Ayurveda for you Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that means “the science of life and longevity”. From ancient times, Ayurveda has called it prakruti or individual constitution, a constant factor that does not change throughout life. It is our own unique pattern of energy, our combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics and predispositions. In modern terms this is known as our inherited genetic code. To maintain health and balance, we have to juggle with the three doshas, taking action to increase or decrease vata, pitta or kapha as conditions demand. This requires moment-tomoment awareness and healing. Healing is really a way of life. Ayurveda is not a passive form of therapy, but rather asks each individual to take responsibility for his or her own daily living. Through our diets, relationships, jobs, our numerous responsibilities and daily life as a whole, we can take simple actions for prevention, self-healing, wholeness and growth toward fulfillment.

I

t is the worlds’ oldest recorded healing system extending back over more than 5000 years of continuous daily practice, from ancient times to the present day. It is not a recently developed system of “alternative healing” but an enduring science that has never lost its integrity and essential nature. Ayurveda is the art of daily living in harmony with the laws of nature. Its fundamental principles are to maintain the health of a healthy person and to heal the disease of an unhealthy person. Both prevention (maintenance of good health) and healing are carried out by entirely natural means.

From the moment of conception, individual constitution is created by the universal energies of Space (Ether), Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These five elements combine into the three fundamental energies, or doshas. Ether and air constitute vata, which is the energy of movement; fire and water constitute pitta, the principle of digestion and metabolism, the transformation of matter into energy; and water and earth make up kapha, the energy of structure and lubrication.

Ayurveda aims to achieve health by working towards balance and harmony, not by fighting disease. The importance of physical balance, emotional release, mental health, environmental mindfulness and spiritual progression is always recognized in the picture of health. It encompasses diet and nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, rest and relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises and medicinal herbs along with cleansing and rejuvenation programs for healing the body, mind and spirit.

“Ayurveda aims to achieve health by working towards balance and harmony, not by fighting disease.”

MACA Ancient Peruvian Superfood M

aca is a natural cruciferous root that grows in central Peru in the high plateaus of the Andes Mountains. It has been cultivated as a vegetable crop in the Andes Mountains for the last 3000 years. Maca is a relative of the radish and has an odour similar to Horlicks.

endocrine system maintains testosterone and oestrogen hormones in balanced levels, it notably may improve sexual functioning.

Maca also acts as an adaptogen on the body: that means it helps to balance and stabilise the body’s systems and optimal functioning of the vital organs.

Legend has it that Incan warriors used to eat Maca before going into battle for invincible strength and stamina. History has shown that Maca has also been used to enhance the fertility of humans and live stock.

Maca has been shown to strengthen the immune system as it contains notable levels of vitamin C, Zinc and a host of other beneficial nutrients.

What are the benefits of Maca Root?

Menopause and PMS symptoms relief: Maca may help the body to normalize oestrogen imbalance in an entirely different way than phytoestrogen herbs. Maca shows potential as natural HRT alternative.

Maca supports the endocrine system by stimulating the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland controls the ovaries and testes – maintaining the steroid hormones in healthy levels.

Increased physical and mental activity – Maca contains complex carbohydrates for more energy.

Maca also act on the adrenals, pancreas and thyroid. By doing so, Maca nourishes the body and promotes its natural ability to normalize the levels of steroid hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Here are some nutritional information about Maca:

The most impressive property of Maca is that it does not contain hormones itself. Instead it provides a unique set of nutrients that helps to balance the endocrine system. When the

Dried Maca root contains 59% Carbohydrates; 10.2% protein; 8.5% fibre; and 2.2% lipids including linolenic, palmitic, and oleic acids.

Maca is packed with vitamins, especially B1, B2, C and E. It contains sterols such as campesterol, stigmasterol, and beta-sitosterol. It also contains significant amounts of minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphate and trace minerals including copper, selenium and silica. Two polyunsaturated fatty acids, macaene and macamide, are used as compounds for maca. Lipid extracts of macaene and macamide seem to increase sexual activity and correct erectile dysfunction in experimental animals. The mechanism for this activity is unknown. Maca does not appear to significantly affect serum concentrations of reproductive hormones including testosterone, estradiol, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone in healthy men. Maca also contains glucosinolates and 60 other phytochemicals, which might have cancer-protecting properties and central nervous system effects.

Maca has shown no adverse reactions with other medicines, supplements, conditions or medical tests.

Stop for a moment and focus on your being by bringing a spiritual element into your living space.

Purpose PLACE OF

did you know?

People who regard themselves as spiritual seem to cope better with stress and heal from illness or addiction faster.

Create a home altar, a prayer corner or spiritual shrine by placing items you love in a well appointed space.

E

very time you pass by or visit this space you will be reminded of a greater purpose and power and bring a sense of wellbeing into your life.

Wellbeing is multidimensional and although many people focus on physical health and perhaps on mental or social health, spiritual health isn’t often fully explored. You can bring this essential aspect of wellbeing into your living space, allowing you to recognise its importance daily and as a reminder to stop for a moment. Spirituality refers to the purpose you discover for yourself and the unique way you’ve chosen to harmonise with the world around you. Reconciling your actions with your beliefs is central to the development of spiritual wellbeing. An imbalance in your spiritual wellbeing can affect your sense of meaning as well as your purpose and

this carries implications that are physical, emotional and social. Although everyone’s view of spirituality may be slightly different and it may mean more to some than others, becoming aware of how it intertwines with your unique set of wellbeing dimensions can assist you in developing a more integrated, holistic and balanced self.

It could be a quote or saying that means something to you, an angel, Buddha, a cross, or a book of prayers or prayer beads, crystals or stones of importance. Place an icon or a few icons that remind you to take a moment to yourself. In your spiritual space, contemplate your true values and how your life reflects these values. Use this place to meditate or pray. Examine your inner landscape to discover who and what is significant to you and make an effort to build and sustain important relationships. Consider your mortality and what you would like to be remembered for.

SPIRITUAL SPACE IDEAS Your spiritual space can be as opulent or simple as you like and can reflect whatever symbolically is important to you. You can create an altar or use a table to place your collection of spiritual items. •

Frame photographs of people who are important in your life; your family, your guru or religious mentor.

Put up a blackboard and write inspirational messages, or paste beautiful sayings on a board.

Keep an incense burner ready to light whenever you need a moment of peace.

Collect known symbols of spirituality, such as a Buddha or a cross and place them where you will see them daily.

REMEMBER TO STOP

Create an area in your living space that reminds you daily to take a moment to contemplate your spiritual connections. Whether you live in a sprawling mansion or a bedsit, consider creating a space that induces peace and a sense of calm. This can be a vase of your favourite fresh flowers, a tray of scented candles, incense, a medicine

Place a meditation cushion in a corner of a room where you can dull the lighting and completely relax into your own form of prayer, meditation or worship. Keep a journal in your space to write down feelings, events, and situations – think of it as a written prayer. Frame a painting or print that you find inspirational and reflects your beliefs and values. Write down your dreams, hopes and wishes and place them on a wall, in a picture frame or even in a beautiful bowl.

Collect candles ready to light when you need contemplative space.

Set a spiritual cognisance goal. Whenever you walk past your spiritual space, take a moment to clarify what’s most important in your life – this will help you focus on less imperative things and reduce stress levels. Release your control – when you are alive to the sense of a greater whole, you will realise that you can’t be responsible for every single aspect of what happens in life, brining you a greater sense of belonging and peace. Set aside 10 minutes (or more) daily to quiet your mind, communicate within the tenets of your beliefs and centre yourself.

8

dimensions of wellbeing

According to Mayo Clinic, there are eight dimensions of wellbeing – and a unique combination of these aspects make up your own feeling of wellbeing.

1.

Emotional: Being able to recognise, experience, understand and express all human emotions – and to channel those emotions into healthy behaviours that satisfy your personal and social goals.

2.

Environmental: Understanding the vital role the environment plays in your personal wellbeing, and how humankind’s actions impact the environment in a way that could jeopardise survival.

3.

Financial: Well-informed decisionmaking on how to invest, use credit circumspectly, save and plan for the future.

4.

Intellectual: Critical thinking with a good dose of creativity and curiosity, being open to new ideas and experiences and motivated to develop new skills.

5.

Occupational: Being intentional in your choice of career, education or vocation in a way that supports your personal values and goals.

6. Physical: Making healthy life choices now that will affect the quality of your life in the future.

7.

Social: Striving for good, supportive relationships that are satisfying by participating in and contributing to your community and developing the capacity for healthy intimacy while learning good communication skills.

8. Spiritual: Finding purpose and greater meaning in your life by using a world view to assist in making choices and behaving in a way that’s consistent with your personal values.

A Green State of Mind There are many millions who believe prayer, especially collective prayer can create an energy frequency to bring about positive change. Reverend Harper from a community called Greenfaith, in Newark, New Jersey combines spirituality with stewardship of the earth and its people. Some of the ways they do this is exploring outdoor worship opportunities and ways to integrate the natural world into religious services. They also have an 18-month fellowship programme where clergy members can qualify as environmental leaders. From this vantage they work with numerous projects to protect those vulnerable in society. Harper’s particular focus is protecting marginalized people from environmental threats like pollution. As Harper says: “Pollution disproportionately and unfairly affects people in poor areas.” Anyone of us can contribute to a ‘green state of mind’. For starters, try this simple 5 minute meditation. 1. Sit in a meditation position and relax your whole body. 2. Close your eyes and imagine all negative energy flowing out of your body. 3. Imagine a swirling light above your head, enveloping your whole body and traveling throughout your home, your community and your city. 4. Focus your mind on your city, then your country and throughout the world. 5. Imagine no pollution, fresh air, plenty of trees, healthy, happy humans and animals, healthy vegetation and plenty of water and food for all. 6. Imagine your whole community in meditation and focusing on the same picture at the same time, collective energy all working together. Practice this each morning on waking. You will find you feel happy, relaxed, uplifted and able to tackle your day with positive energy, enough to spread environmental consciousness to others and inspire people to get involved.

Light a candle to commemorate a special occasion.

We used to measure intelligence through IQ (intelligence quota) but psychologists soon realised that there is so much more to capability than cognitive ability. Along came EQ or emotional quotient which measures many different aspects, one of them being our ability to respond to the impulses, situations and people around us. More recently we have discovered the importance of SQ or spiritual quotient. This deals more with our understanding of a relationship to the meaning of life and ultimate values. Spend time thinking about your purpose in life.

FORWARD BEND

Reframe your perception of indulgence. Make it mean gentle caring and loving energy directed towards yourself.

This posture stretches the entire length of the back body from the skull to the heels. It facilitates the flow of breath through the body, stimulates the gastric fire and helps clean the internal organs. Sit on your butt with your legs straight out in front of you, knees are straight and toes pointed back towards the head. Straighten the spine and relax shoulders down towards the ground. Take a breath in and move your hands right up above your head parallel to the ears, exhale and use your breath to move your shoulders down. Elongate your spine making yourself as tall as possible. Breathe in and as you breathe out bend forward from the hips. Think of stretching your spine lengthwise rather than curling it. Touch your toes or as far as you can reach. Breathe 5 times each time you breathe out release more deeply into the posture. Repeat 3 times.

We are forever pushing, doing, working, being more productive, squeezing more into a day and then on top of it all also expecting ourselves to be super fit. Let yourself off the hook and sink fully into your body for a different type of body exercise. The best time to do this is during a full moon, an opportune time to relax a little, spoil yourself and let go of pushing yourself to the limit. You will also find yourself building up more awareness in your body. Full moon is the perfect excuse to let

CHIEF BENEFIT CREATES A MEMORY OF TOTAL RELAXATION IN YOUR CELLS YOU CAN REFER TO WHENEVER YOU ARE STRESSED.

Believe it or not achieving total relaxation in the body is very hard to do. This posture involves lying on your back with legs slightly apart and arms at 45 degrees, palms up and fingers slightly curled. Imagine your spine and neck is long. Concentrate on deep breathing filling and emptying your belly. Feel as though a wave of relaxation is moving up your body from the bottom to the top. Go through each part of your body and relax your toes, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, hips, pelvis, belly, ribs, chest, shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists, hands. Relax your neck, the back of your head, your scalp. Relax each part of your face, your eyebrows, nose, mouth cheeks and ears. By the time you reach the top of your head already some parts of your body will have gone back to being tense. Start from the beginning and do this 5 times.

FORMS OF

exercise

Try out other ‘full moon’ forms of exercise in Cape Town - there are many ways to have fun and feel amazing without having to be too competitive or focus on ‘being the best’.

MOONLIGHT MASS

TREE POSE Full moon energy is frenetic and makes us feel energetic, emotional and sometimes ungrounded. During the full moon we tend to be headstrong. This is a wonderful time to bring your energy back into your body and ground yourself. The tree pose will root you and bring balance. Stand straight, balance on the right foot, root it down. Bring the left foot flat against the thigh, or if you can’t manage that onto the shin (not the knee). Find your balance and bring the hands into prayer on the chest. Focus your eyes on a point in front of you. Keep the palms together and slowly extend the arms above the head. Hold for 30 seconds, remembering to breathe and keep the shoulders down. You will feel an exhilarating sense of lightness. Repeat on the other side.

CHIEF BENEFIT CORPSE POSE

This ride is meant to be fun not a race. For more information on #moonlightmass go to - www.facebook. com/moonlightmass or follow them on twitter @ moonlightmass

LION’S HEAD Another fun way to indulge and enjoy exercising during full moon is the hour-long climb up Lion’s Head for sundowners. This Capetonian tradition is usually coupled with a glass of wine or champagne at the top to celebrate reaching the summit and admiring the spectacular view.

YOUR 1 DE-STRESS DISTRESS

"

Reframe your perception of indulgence. Make it mean gentle caring and loving energy directed towards yourself.

Listen to your body – if you’re feeling tearful, extremely tired, ravenously hungry or just plain miserable, you’re probably under stress. Take a break and be kind to yourself. Take time out to do things you enjoy – a long lunch with an old friend, watching a movie during the day, long walks on the beach or simply indulging in a good book. Don’t listen to all the old wives tales and birth or pregnancy horror stories. Take time out to learn as much as you can about the process by consulting experts and reading – so you can make well informed choices.

It’s not necessary to put on huge amounts of weight during pregnancy and you can certainly take measures to ensure you don’t battle for months afterwards to lose the extra kilograms. Allow your body to lead you in terms of what you can and can’t do. A balance is important – being completely sedentary is bad for you, but carrying on with extreme exercise isn’t a good idea either. If you didn’t exercise before falling pregnant, you can still begin – just make sure you’re not overdoing it. Find a type of exercise that suits you and is safe. Examples are Pilates, yoga, tai chi, swimming and walking.

TIP WHATEVER EXERCISE YOU DO CHOOSE, BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR HEART RATE UNDER 140 BEATS PER MINUTE. DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF TO OVERHEAT AND HYDRATE WELL.

Feel okay having ‘Me Time’ By Jess Mouneimne, Editor mommymatters.co.za “You know you’re a mom when a 15 minute uninterrupted shower feels like a day at the spa.” “You know you’re a mom when a trip to the grocery store alone feels like a tropical holiday.“ “You know you’re a mom when staying up to watch a whole 8pm movie on a Sunday feels like a night out on the town.” We joke about how our lives have changed as mothers. We hold back envy when seeing our childless counterparts post party pics on Facebook, while we jiggle colicky babies. For me, the ‘childless friend envy’ doesn’t last too long. I know that as much fun as they may be having, kids are definitely more rewarding. It’s the friends who have kids and still have it all; they make me green - the mom with the same work stress I have, but instead of hitting club duvet at 8pm on a Friday like I do, gets a babysitter and has date nights and girls nights. Neither of us probably have the energy, but she pushes through the exhaustion for ‘me time’ while I pass out on the couch in the same tracksuit I had on all day yesterday - chocolate in hand. She has a bounce in her step I long for. The truth is whether you have a good childcare support structure or not, ‘me time’ is either at the top or bottom of your priority list. For me, after having my first child it’s always been at the bottom, because if it was anywhere else I would be a bad mom. After just having my second child I realise how essential ‘me time’ is for the whole family. A happy mommy really does make a happy home and if an hour at the Spa is going to make your week more manageable then go ahead, pay good money for the babysitter and indulge in a guilt free massage.

3 YUM

Eating a well balanced diet is essential – but you don’t have to eat for two. Just ensure your diet is nutrient rich and filled with all the food groups. Fill up on ironrich food like leafy green vegetables and fruit such as apples, mangoes and bananas. For a sweet treat, eat dates and nuts. Folic acid is something you need to supplement with as this is vital for your baby’s healthy growth. Keep small healthy snacks with you at all times to stave off sugar lows or nausea. Remember to listen to your body and extract the goodness from cravings – for example, a craving for salt and vinegar chips could mean you need potassium.

TIP EAT FOOD RICH IN CALCIUM LIKE MILK, NUTS, BEANS, WHOLE GRAINS AND ALSO ADEQUATE PROTEIN AND FIBRE. DRINK LOTS OF WATER.

Usually the first thing to go during pregnancy is your waist line. Don’t bemoan your diminishing sex appeal, rather indulge yourself in a shopping trip that will help you feel comfortable and attractive for the next nine months (add a few more for the post-baby bulge). Celebrate your new shape – you’re free for the first time in your life to simply be the shape you are – show off your impressive cleavage and your shapely bum. Gone are the days when polka dots and frills were the only options for pregnant women; in fact, with the baby boom in Hollywood, there’s an explosion of modern, fun and sexy maternity styles. A few good bras are essential – your breasts can change size up to four times during your pregnancy.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR IMPORTANCE Rather than bemoaning the difficult body changes during pregnancy, treat them as an absolute blessing and joy. Be amazed by nature’s incredible design and intelligence, find wonder and awe at the miracle in your body and consciously take time to enjoy your journey.

Preggy roll Support a growing tummy and get ultra comfortable with the cleverly designed preggy roll.

Grobaby Preggy Roll R29499 Available at Kloof & online only.

Body care Very often, when a pregnant tummy grows too big to see anything below it, this is when partners take a crash course in grooming. If your partner isn’t that hot at painting your toenails or waxing your legs, then indulge in a day at the spa. A soft massage (check what’s appropriate for pregnancy), time out for a facial and the all important pedicure will help you feel less like an incubator and more like a goddess. While many aromatherapy oils aren’t deemed safe during pregnancy, there are a few that will help you relax and lift your mood (always use caution, and if you have a history of miscarriage, don’t use aromatherapy oils):

Self massage is a great practice and perfect for preventing stretchmarks. Use high quality oils on a daily basis to nourish your skin.

Soil Massage Oil 100ml R9999

Yummy tummy Available at Kloof, Cavendish, Gardens & online only.

BEAUTY BASIC 6 ways to use Jojoba oil

J

ojoba oil has so many amazing qualities and properties. If you have to choose only one beauty product, make it Jojoba. We found 7 fabulous ways you can use it.

CAMPHILL VILLAGE

JOJOBA OIL Camphill Village in the Western Cape has a jojoba field with a high yield which has been giving generously. The garden team have been picking, picking and‌ well, picking!

1. DAILY FACIAL MOISTURISER: Smoothing and ultra moisturising, Jojoba can be used directly on the face as a fabulous moisturiser. Leave some time for it to sink in, before you leave home as it may look shiny before it has been absorbed. Alternatively add a few drops to whichever cream you usually use. Many acne sufferers claim regular use of jojoba oil decreases break-outs. Check out the discussion thread on acne.org to read people’s personal experiences with jojoba oil. 2. MAKE-UP REMOVER: Jojoba oil can be used to take off facial make-up, and is gentle enough for removing eye makeup as well. Apply a few drops of jojoba oil to a cotton pad and gently wipe

make-up and mascara off your eye area and face. 3. LIP BALM: Apply to lips as you would with regular lip balm to treat dried, chapped lips. 4. CUTICLE TREATMENT: Rub dry cuticles around your fingernails with jojoba oil. It will soften and keep them conditioned. 5. HAIR TREATMENT: Apply jojoba oil to the ends of your hair cuticles, or add a few drops to your regular conditioner after shampooing. 6. SHAVING PREP: Whether shaving your face or legs, put some jojoba oil on your skin before your shaving cream and you will prepare your skin for a smoother shave. Not only that you will have super-soft skin when you are done.

Shoe-string goddess It’s never easy to know which product is best to use for your skin and beauty and sometimes getting to the Spa just doesn’t fit in to your schedule. One thing’s for sure, though, taking time out to pamper yourself goes a long way to ensuring glowing beauty and wellbeing.

asy beauty treatments abound – right in your own pantry

Wake up Get more than your mind going with a caffeine shot – use your old coffee grounds to create a face mask guaranteed to wake up tired skin. Also, rub coffee grounds on dimply thigh areas to stimulate good circulation so you can keep cellulite and varicose veins at bay.

TIP MIX COFFEE GROUNDS WITH YOUR USUAL BODY MOISTURISER FOR EASY SPREADABILITY

Honey has incredible anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Give your face a soaking of sweetness with a spoon of honey applied to clean skin. Leave on for a few minutes to reduce puffiness and for a deep cleanse. Rinse off with warm water.

Cleopatra knew what she was doing – milk contains lactic acid and that’s a fantastic moisturiser. If you balk at the idea of filling your bath with milk, try it for a luxurious foot bath or for your hands. Soak for 15 minutes. Add honey and cinnamon for antibacterial action.

Soak it up Oats are filled with essential fatty acids and anti-inflammatory compounds – they also make a wonderful face mask. Just soak rolled oats for ten minutes in warm water and apply to your face in a thickish layer. Leave on for 15 minutes for a smoother, more moisturised feel.

Banana boost Mash up a medium sized banana and apply to your face and neck. Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with cool water to gently moisturise. This leaves your skin feeling softer and lighter. For a more intense moisture experience, add two tablespoons of plain yoghurt and a tablespoon of honey.

TIP FOR AN ALL OVER BODY WASH, PLACE TWO SCOOPS OF OATS INTO THE FOOT OF A PAIR OF STOCKINGS AND USE IT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO SOAP. everything you need to live life well

There’s nothing quite as luxuriously relaxing as a steam bath or sauna. Create your own at home with a few easy ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

TURN YOUR BATHROOM INTO A SPA

Rub halved lemons on your bathroom walls before you begin – the sharp, clean smell will bring clarity to your mind. 2. Mix the aromatherapy oils together and place in your bath (if you’re going to use a shower room, place the oils in a deep basin filled with boiling water). 3. Fill your bath with hot water only to create steam, or run your shower on hot for 15 minutes. 4. Light candles and keep the overhead lights off. 5. Switch on your favourite relaxation music (remember to keep electrical cables outside the bathroom). 6. Slightly wet your hair with warm water and spread the mashed avocado through from root to tip. 7. Apply your face mask (of your choosing or use one of the kitchen concoctions) 8. Apply a few drops of flaxseed oil using an ear bud to your eyelashes and brows for nourishment and to encourage growth. 9. Sit quietly with your feet resting in a tub of warmed milk. Breathe in the sensual scents of the lemon and aromatherapy oils while the steam opens your pores. 10. After 15 minutes, use the salt crystals to give your body a vigorous rub-down, exfoliating away all those dead skin cells and rejuvenating your circulation (mix in coffee grounds for a more intense wake up). 11. Add a bit of cold water to the bath if it needs cooling down, pour in the milk from your foot bath, climb in and relax. If you prefer a shower, use the basin of aromatherapy oils as a body wash under a warm, hard shower. 12. Once you have rinsed off from your bath or shower, rub yourself dry vigorously with a soft towel and apply your favourite moisturising cream.

Lavender in Lavender Hill products were created for the Lavender in Lavender Hill project which plants lavender gardens and fields across the community of Lavender Hill, Cape Town - a struggling community filled with gangs, violence, crime and joblessness. Their aim is to create a social art piece which will instil pride and hope in the community. Skills training is given to community members and gardens become their personal lavender farms. To create our products we mostly use the lavender from Lavender Hill which enables job creation and income generation for the community members it is bought from. MAGICAL BAOBAB Dr Sarah Venter, founder of EcoProducts has spent decades studying the magical Baobab tree, their habitats and unique characteristics.

S

he has lived in Venda in the Limpopo most of her life with the vision of making a meaningful contribution to rural women's livelihoods, and to conserve Baobab trees. She is one of the few non-Venda people who can communicate fluently in the complex Venda language and has earned the trust and respect of the many communities in the area. The village women gather the fallen baobab seed pods (they are never harvested directly from the tree as this could harm the tree) and sell the pods to EcoProducts. Many rural households are headed by women and this helps them earn a desperately needed income. Sarah has recently built the first Baobab cold-pressed seed processing factory in South Africa, she is one of the first producers to make pure, organically certified Baobab oil available to the public. The rich amber coloured oil has significant skin healing and restructuring properties highly valued by the cosmetic world while the powder from the seeds is lauded as a superfruit with high levels of health-giving properties. During her recently completed 5 year PhD research Sarah uncovered the need to plant new trees – if we don’t the tree population will crash in a few hundred years’ time. Although we may not be around then, our great great great grandchildren will be. Everything about EcoProducts is in service to this vision – to conserve this magnificent tree and grow an awareness of its abundant gifts.

“Baobab oil is truly amazing for your skin, but it is also amazing for rural Venda women's income. The more people that know about it, the more I can help the rural community.” Find the EcoProducts range of Baobab oil, and Skin and Hair Beauty range Baobody on the shelf at Wellness Warehouse.

WORKSHOP by Glenn Douglas Haig

Getting your tribe to flourish again If you feel like your close community can support each other more, or if the younger people in your tribe – especially the boys - are struggling, then this workshop is a MUST. Our modern society has lost sight of the wonderful benefits of intimate communities. The nuclear family struggles along with emotionally distant fathers who are overburdened by work and responsibility, frazzled mothers who play so many roles they have lost themselves and a general climate of consumerism and over-information that ultimately pulls our families apart. This is an invitation to actually DO something about this by identifying your tribe and honouring that each person belongs and has a place. Every one of us has a function in our tribe – we are not and cannot do it alone.

Join Glenn-Douglas Haig for a powerful 2-hour workshop hosted by Wellness Warehouse in Kloof Street, and discover the power of your tribe.

Organic Ocean is proud to introduce an innovative line of organic certified products based on ingredients from the ocean. In the depth of the ocean, a variety of Algae grow in extreme environmental conditions. Due to these conditions such as: UV exposure, temperature variations, pressure changes, the algae had to develop unique survival mechanisms in order to survive. It was discovered by researchers that both human skin and algae cell membranes have isolation similarities in their function, and as a result, the algae can be used to protect, nourish and improve skin protection and appearance. Organic Ocean invites you to enjoy the qualities of these amazing algae, and experience unique beauty and health!
