E D I TO R ’S N OT E We live in a culture of emphasised action. In this world - where everything is available to us in an endless stream of information and opportunity - the onus is on us to control the gates and take ownership of our time. One of the central tenets of Taoism is wu wei – the state of not doing. The past few months in particular have seen me consciously practising the art of pausing and embracing a slower quality of time. Being with myself without impatience includes admitting that I’m not always busy because there isn’t enough time, but because I’m pushing myself to hurry. As someone easily lost in the existentialist dream, I find it both liberating and challenging to abandon the project of knowing, doing and being ‘more’ in favour of falling into the wonder of the present moment. The now has its own language, its nuances many - and often overlooked. Of course it’s tempting to want to seek out the extraordinary in my quest to stop time. I’ve found myself venturing far and wide in an attempt to reset my mental balance, only to find that the supposedly remarkable remains outside of the everyday after I’ve returned to ‘regular life’. I’m grateful to have discovered - largely through my work on the magazine you’re now reading - that amassed thoughts and emotions can find the space and time they need to be digested through far simpler shifts in behaviour and perspective. Shifts that don’t necessarily require the discovery of new worlds, but rather allow us to move with relative ease through whichever reality we do encounter. This summer, I encourage you to take the time to enjoy your mind, body and life as they are, without freighting them with habitual expectation. Savour the morning air, seek out a sunset, breathe in a way that feels full and free. You may just find yourself stumbling into the empty spaces in your mind where the real joy has been patiently waiting.

E D I TO R ’ S C H O I C E TIRED & WIRED? If you wake up each morning feeling simultaneously exhausted and overwhelmed, you could be suffering from the epidemic of adrenal dysfunction running rampant in society today. Instead of continuing the habitual reach for a coffee, soda or some other form of artificial energy injection, take some time to invest in addressing the root cause. I’ve found the Nurture by Metagenics Adrenal Support supplement to be a valuable ally in addressing the racehorse/flatliner paradox caused by the constant flood of stress hormones in my own daily life. The botanical formula combines Asian ginseng, rhodiola and cordyceps to support multiple body systems during stressful periods, and I definitely feel more resilient after taking two a day for a month. SKIN SIPS Kale, moringa, gojis, multivitamins and probiotics are all healthy staples I now boast in my bathroom as well as kitchen cupboard, thanks to the discovery of Cold Pressed Skin’s juicy superfood skincare collection. The earth-, animaland skin-lovin’ products are made using only cold-pressed extracts, and housed in snazzy sustainable packaging. I have to stop myself from licking my face when using the Kale, Moringa & Broccoli Antioxidant Cleanser; the Acai & Goji Brightening Serum leaves me duly dewy; and the Kale, Algae & Vitamin C Superfood Moisturiser makes me feel even more self-satisfied now that I’ve got greens on my skin too.
WA ST E- F R E E WAT E R One health hack that comes particularly easily to me is hydration. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a (water) drinking problem, actually. I’ll sheepishly admit to regularly buying bottled water, and spending far too much money on fancy filtration systems. Like a hipster with a hip flask, I’m pretty attached to my brag-worthy KURO-B G -Ec Glass Water Bottle. It’s both lightweight and durable, and available in either 550 ml or 1 l (yay!) variations. A great reusable, non-toxic and economical alternative to single-use plastic, it becomes a handy source of pure water when paired with KURO-B ’s naturally filtering charcoal koins. Next on my wishlist is their stylish glass countertop decanter – the ultimate solution to healthy hydration on tap.

HULK JUICE Despite my well-intentioned enthusiasm for all things alkaline, I’ve always struggled to stomach green juices and smoothies. Well aware of the myriad health benefits of getting my daily fix of green goodness, I was relieved to discover Dr Boxall’s 3-in-1 Sceletium Tortuosum, Hemp Seed & Moringa Leaf Superfood Protein Powder. The name may be tricky on the tongue, but the taste – thankfully – is not. I mix it with a glass of almond milk, banana, honey and ice and enjoy it as a superfood snack to ease me over the midday hump. It’s filled with protein, essential amino acids, omegas, antioxidants, fibre and more, so I get to feel both satiated and smug while enjoying my new favourite green sip.
I RO N WO M A N As someone with historically low iron levels, I’ve tried everything from dietary interventions and exorbitantly priced supplements to quarterly iron drips. Post-iron Lara is far more full of larks, and I’m always keen to try new forms of the magical mineral when I encounter them. I’m happy to report a notable elevation in energy, mood and general joie de vivre after three weeks of daily supplementation with BlueIron’s Liquid Iron. Complete with vitamin C to assist absorption of the iron; vitamin B12 for more energy; zinc and biotin for hair, skin and nails and folic acid for nervous system support, it’s a great formulation for the modern wonder woman (if I may). Oh, and it also happens to taste like blueberry syrup.
S K I N S O OT H E R My new summer skincare companion, this gentle non-toxic botanical cream is great for naturally soothing sunburn, insect bites and dry skin. It contains a special form of fulvic acid (CHD-FA), which offers all the natural healing properties of the organic acid without the heavy metals or contaminants. While I’m fortunate enough to only need to apply it to garden-variety skin ‘concerns’, it’s said to be a particularly effective natural replacement for the cortisone creams typically used during eczema and other skin disorder flare-ups. Pair the cream with Bettamed’s Sensitive Oxygen Spray for even faster and more effective relief.

ctober represents a significant and exciting milestone for Wellness Warehouse, as we enter the KwaZulu-Natal market for the first time. Our first store in the region will be at Ballito Junction in Ballito on the North Coast, and we look forward to welcoming you there. Judging by the frequent requests we’ve had to open a store in KZN, this is a long-overdue move for us… so expect more stores to follow! With almost 30 stores in Cape Town, Joburg, Pretoria and now Durban, we are helping even more people across the country to live life well and that’s what motivates us every day. For those customers not near a store or who simply prefer the added convenience, we continue to focus on improving our website and online shopping experience. Our website is also a great source of product and general health and wellness information, including a calendar of upcoming instore Healthy Happenings events. In other store news, refurbishments at Palmyra Junction and the V&A Waterfront are now complete, and we have commenced trading at our new store at The Point in Sea Point.

Something I’m particularly proud of is the extent to which we are investing in training our store staff. Last year we established the Wellness Academy, which offers an extensive curriculum of practical courses that all our staff study as they work their way through the programme. Consistently excellent and knowledgeable customer service, together with the widest assortment of quality products, is central to our value proposition. We don’t always get it right and we can certainly improve, but establishing the Wellness Academy has been a big step towards raising the standards of product and health knowledge - as well as customer service - across our business. An educational undertaking of this scale is unique to our industry, but by working closely with our qualified health practitioners and supportive suppliers we aim to raise the benchmark for everyone. Lastly, I hope you are enjoying the recentlylaunched ranges of Wellness Warehouse ownbrand superfood, natural beauty and cleaning products. We continue to partner with suppliers we trust to offer quality products that are good for you and the environment. Yours in wellness,
Simon Alston

Life coach and founder of Smiling Soul Retreats, Brett Shuttleworth spent much of his early life in the small town of Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal focused on “becoming the greatest rugby player in the world.” After finishing school, he was awarded a bursary to play professionally in the US. Everything was going perfectly according to plan, until he broke his arm and was no longer able to play the game he loved with his whole heart. At the age of 27, he found himself at a loss - both physically and emotionally. He spent over a year homeless on the streets of Manhattan, searching for answers and asking the alltoo-common question: “Why me?” After a long and desperate winter, Brett’s summer arrived in the shape of a Calvin Klein modelling contract that sparked a whirlwind of front page features, billboards, global marketing campaigns and runway shows in over 26 countries. By all indications, he was “living the dream” - but something still didn’t feel right. And so he walked away from modelling and moved to Hollywood to star in a number of movies - because surely that’s the real dream? While living in New York, Brett would often pull out a piece of chalk and write inspirational quotes on the sidewalk in the morning. As he sat, watching passers-by read his quotes and instantly transform from grumpy to happy before his eyes, he realised that he had found something that ignited real joy within him. This was the turning point. He left “the dream” behind to travel the world in search of purpose and the “true meaning of life”.

Eventually his travels brought him to India, where he backpacked across mountains and sought out gurus willing to share their fundamental principles with him. Throughout the journey, he kept a detailed journal of the lessons he learned and the places he visited. On his return to “real life”, he set to work on creating Smiling Soul Retreats, carefully selecting the most defining experiences and inspiring places, and building his teachings around them.
Ballito Junction - OPENS 15 OCTOBER
Brett has walked a long journey to discover “love as the ultimate success”, and he now invites everyone he encounters to do the same.

THE RISE AND RISE OF CBD By Tayla de Bruyn
24 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
Commonly known as CBD, cannabidiol was discovered in the 1940s. It’s one of the 113 known cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, and constitutes up to 40% of its extract. Due to its association with marijuana - a high-THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) variety of cannabis – many believe that using CBD hemp oil will induce a ‘high’. This is not the case, as it does not contain THC, which is the main psychoactive in the cannabis plant and the cause of the ‘high’. CBD hemp oil is made through the process of extraction, whereby a hemp plant (a high-CBD variety of cannabis) is soaked in a solvent. An example of such a solvent could be grain alcohol. The hemp is soaked in the solvent for a few minutes, and the CBD and other cannabinoids are left in the form of a thin liquid. At this point, the liquid is ready to be evaporated - leaving behind the CBD hemp oil, which can be consumed or applied topically. It’s important to note the difference between CBD hemp oil and hemp seed oil, which does not require an extraction process or contain the CBD cannabinoid. Adding to the confusion is the fact that CBD oil can also be made from marijuana. While hemp-derived CBD oil typically contains high concentrations of CBD, its THC content does not exceed the legal 0.3% limit. Marijuana-derived oil (commonly known as cannabis oil), on the other hand, is sourced from selectively bred high-CBD strains, and contains significant amounts of THC (ranging between 5% and 30%). While cannabis oil is considered a ‘prescription’ medication, CBD hemp oil is seen as a dietary supplement and sold legally over the counter at health shops and pharmacies.
H E A LT H
D I D YO U K N OW ? Hemp and marijuana can both be sources of CBD. However, marijuana is naturally lower in CBD than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) - the psychoactive responsible for the marijuana ‘high’. In hemp, CBD dominates the makeup of the plant.

CBD products are also used to reduce the symptoms of cancer and help alleviate the side effects of cancer treatment, such as nausea, fatigue and pain. Numerous studies have shown CBD to reduce both anxiety and depression. Many of the allopathic medications used in the treatment of mental illness have demonstrated multiple side effects, including drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and headaches, to name a few. Although they can be effective in certain cases, many people suffering from anxiety and depression have turned to CBD oils and other CBD products in an attempt to pursue a more natural way of healing. Due to its ability to bind with receptors in the brain in a way that causes very few side effects, CBD is regarded by many as both a healthier and more effective way of reducing and treating anxiety, depression and other mental health disorders.

While marijuana has been used for pain relief for a number of years, CBD has recently been recognised as an impressive pain reliever in its own right. In fact, it has been found that the CBD is actually the component of marijuana that decreases pain levels. The body produces endocannabinoids (ECS) - neurotransmitters that bind with the cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system and are involved in the regulation of multiple functions, including sleep, appetite, pain and immune response.

While cannabis products are not yet completely legal in South Africa, CBD hemp oil has been granted full legal status as of May this year. Anyone in South Africa is now legally able to sell products containing CBD for medicinal or dietary purposes. Although CBD hemp oil is not psychoactive, conditions have been set with regards to its use. The first states that no more than 20 mg may be used per person per day. The second is that CBD products may not be advertised as a cure for any specific condition, but rather as an aid to overall health maintenance and wellbeing. That said, the future of CBD remains promising. Ongoing research and awareness backed by institutions the likes of the National Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Medical News Today and many others coupled with everincreasing interest from the public is sure to see the humble cannabinoid reach a high of its own.

“This is a perfect all-in-one, from circulation to digestion to flushing the system. Helps to put a spring back into your step.” - Lainy
W H AT IS IN FL A M M AT I ON ? Inflammation is part of the body’s innate healing response. When an area of the body is damaged, the immune system releases a cascade of products to start the healing process (you might feel this as a warming of the area). This is what we call inflammation.
“Great product! Improves energy levels and keeps blood pressure in check.” - Elrina
The fact that our immune systems are so efficient is usually a good thing. However, if inflammation sticks around for long enough, it can become the new problem. If there is low-grade direct or indirect irritation somewhere, the red, hot swelling doesn’t calm down after the acute trigger has subsided. Instead, it calls in more immune fighters, generating more heat until eventually all the cellular violence begins to harm perfectly healthy tissue in the surrounding area. This type of perpetual inflammation can affect fat cells, joints, skin, arteries and organs.
“I have a lot of joint pain and have played around with different forms of turmeric. This is a no-mess option” - Tracey
IN FL A MMAT I ON & C H RON I C D I S E A S E Why and how inflammation drives chronic disease in some more than others is currently a hot research topic. It could be a genetic predisposition, or exposure to toxins like tobacco smoke, certain food intolerances or even high blood pressure. It’s usually a combination of both genetic and lifestyle factors. Inflammation is at the centre of every chronic illness. For example… *ASTHMA is an inflammation of the lungs. *Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. *An inflamed brain contributes to ALZHEIMER’S in susceptible people. *CANCER genes can stimulate an inflammatory response that triggers cancer. *Inflammation of the arteries (caused by sugar) can lead to DIABETES and OBESITY. *Inflamed arteries are a primary cause of HEART ATTACKS and STROKE.

INFL A M MATO RY FO OD S An allergic reaction is part of the body’s inflammatory response, so any food you are allergic to becomes an inflammatory food. In addition, many of the chemicals produced by the body to trigger an inflammatory response are made from a type of fat called arachidonic acid (AA), which is found in very high amounts in milk products and meat. Avoiding these foods can help to reduce inflammation. ANTI- IN FL A M MATORY F O OD S On the flip side, there are compounds in certain foods that can help to switch off inflammation. The most well known of these are curcumin (in turmeric), quercetin (in red onions), oleocanthal (in olives), bromelain (in pineapple), vitamin C (in berries and broccoli) and sulphur (in eggs, onions and garlic). As the body produces oxidants as part of the inflammatory reaction, antioxidant-rich foods are also likely to be anti-inflammatory. Colourful foods (such as beetroot, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, tomatoes, carrots, mustard, turmeric, broccoli, avocado, asparagus and other greens) all help to reduce inflammation and thus allergic potential. Taking supplements containing these can be far more potent than eating the foods. Whereas red onion, for example, contains 20 mg of quercetin, there are supplements that provide up to 500 mg, and that can have a significant anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effect.

FLOAT TO FREEDOM By Quentin Crofford
44 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
“The sensory deprivation tank has been the most important tool I’ve ever used for developing my mind.”
A
bold statement by legendary American stand-up comedian, UFC commentator, entrepreneur and podcast host Joe Rogan. The Joe Rogan Experience has been the second most downloaded podcast on iTunes for two years running, and I count myself among the many who laud its host as the epitome of a successful modern human. While this is the first time I’ve heard of sensory deprivation (also known as floatation) therapy, when Rogan says something is worth doing, I take note. The technology involved has improved dramatically since the 1950s, when John C Lilly developed the first sensory deprivation ‘tanks’ to study the nature of consciousness. His first test subjects were completely submerged in water, with a makeshift breathing mask covering their faces. Not surprisingly, the only volunteers to brave the initial trials were NASA astronauts. Thankfully, the original tanks have since evolved into the inviting, state-of-the-art ‘floatation pods’ to which we have access today. Each pod contains roughly a foot of 34°C (approximately skin temperature) water saturated with epsom salt (magnesium sulphate). I’ve been fortunate enough to experience the modern float pod at Float Zero, Cape Town’s first dedicated ‘float lab’ with branches in Claremont and Gardens. My only concern before entering a float pod for the first time is my claustrophobia, but the fact that I have full control of the pod’s lid and internal lighting eases my nerves. The epsom salt creates a gentle buoyancy akin to being wrapped in a silk hammock. With the lights off, all sense of space is instantly lost. It’s so dark, the feeling of my eyes blinking is the only indication of whether they are open or closed. The Float Zero pods offer a choice between complete darkness or the seven chakra colours in soft, fluid lighting. You can also opt for either silence or binaural beats. I find the latter to be an inspired addition to the experience, gently accompanying my transition into this rather alien world.
H E A LT H
For me, physical relaxation in the pod is instantaneous. My body dissolves into the salt water, dissipating any muscle and joint aches I may have brought in with me. With the loss of virtually all bodily sensation, my interoception is acutely isolated to my breath and heartbeat. My breathing slows, with my heart rate steadily following. I keep focusing on my breath until I am quite unsuspectingly overwhelmed by a tyranny of random thoughts attempting to suck me into a supermassive black hole of negativity. Only just avoiding spaghettification (yes, it’s a thing), I manage to bring my focus back to my breath. The ‘monkey mind’ is running amok. Is this the natural state of my mind? It becomes apparent while floating just how few thoughts manage to break through the barrier of distraction created by our continual bombardment by stimuli outside this watery wonder world. These ‘unheard’ thoughts are deleterious to our psychological wellbeing, and are often the source of our underlying feelings of unsatisfactoriness. I’m suddenly aware that I’ve transitioned from one extreme environment to another. We all feel helpless in the face of the extreme sensory overload we encounter in everyday life, and the initial shock of removing these external inputs is both surprisingly unnerving and incredibly telling. I find myself drowning in thoughts at first, but after a few moments the tidal wave slows to a manageable trickle. With my brain released from the exhausting job of monitoring my countless desires, appetites and sensations (be they good or bad), it suddenly feels supercharged – malleable, flexible and capable of gaining perspectives otherwise unthought of. After some time in the pod, I think I’ve broken through what Rogan refers to as “the land of trouble and confusion”. With laser-like acuity and a hint of trepidation about what’s about to be unveiled, I set out on an audit of my life. Am I treating my girlfriend with the love and kindness she deserves? My intuition is yes, but surely I should ask her? She would know better than me. Great, I’ll speak to her about it this evening. And so it goes. My pod ponderings include everything from work, family, friendships, health and anxieties to the ultimate question - am I a good person? While this last one will no doubt require many more float sessions to answer, I find a resting place in immense gratitude for a generally fortunate life, and decide to hone my focus in on my relationship with my mom. This is the person who has loved me unconditionally throughout my life. Why am I so impatient with her? Why am I always short on the phone with her, as if she’s asking probing, uncomfortable questions? Is her love too much? What a silly thought… Like most moms, she is the epitome of ‘mudita’ - the Pali word for sympathetic or vicarious joy. The pleasure derived from the wellbeing of others. I’ve been scouring books of all sorts in search of insight into being a better human, when this great teacher has been in front of me all this time. What a fool! I decide to dedicate myself to being a better son, and hope that some of her mudita will rub off on me.
46 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
As I rest in a blissful state brimming with invaluable insights, a gentle voice informs me that my session is over. I can hardly believe that an hour has passed by so quickly. I have an odd feeling of accomplishing so much, while not having moved a muscle. The experience reinforces my belief that we are our own best teachers and healers. As sole witnesses to our innermost thoughts, we all know best what truly ails us. I now float twice a week, and my subjective wellbeing continues to improve. As an innate empiricist, I am encouraged by the growing body of evidence in support of my anecdotal account. I’m hoping my story will inspire you to try a float of your own - especially if you suffer, as most of us do, from some degree of anxiety, or simply crave a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Possible side effects? Reduced anxiety, improved muscle recovery from exercise, reduced joint aches from old injuries, and an overall sense of wellbeing. Doesn’t sound like you’ve got much to lose.

AN AMAZING WEIGHT LOSS BREAKTHROUGH
PUT A LITTLE SPRING IN YOUR STEP!
FO LLOW YO UR JOY Once you’ve identified your exercise challenges and found ways to overcome them, it’s time to find a form of exercise you enjoy! It can take a fair deal of willingness and patience to explore the various options, but it’s certainly worth the effort. If you enjoy something enough, you’ll find ways of overcoming your barriers. Joining a gym that offers a range of activities is just one option. Ask your family, friends and colleagues for ideas and suggestions of where and how to get started. If you really struggle to find something that catches your fancy, start by simply making an effort to increase your activity during the day. Swopping your time on social media for a walk around the block may be more rewarding than you think. CHO O S E FR EQ U E N CY OV E R I N T E N S I T Y As exciting as it may be to overcome your barriers and find exercise that you enjoy, don’t deplete all your motivation by exhausting yourself in the first few days or weeks. Start slow, allowing your body to adjust to its new active life. The World Health Organisation recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous or cardiovascular activity a week. This guideline should allow you to pace yourself and stay motivated for a prolonged period of time. When you’re ready, you can ramp up your moderate activity to 300 minutes a week, adding strength training exercises for all the major muscles groups twice a week. KEEP IT IN T EREST I N G Consider shaking up your exercise routine before you start becoming bored with your new habit. Try changing your training days, increasing or decreasing the frequency of your sessions, exploring a new activity, setting a goal or signing up for an event. RE ST A N D R ECOV E R Once you get to the stage where you can call yourself physically active, remember the importance of rest. It’s an essential part of training, and very often overlooked. A lack of motivation, fatigue and injury are just a few of the symptoms that indicate that your body and mind need a break. Most athletes enjoy doing some stretches, taking a hot bath, sleeping in or spoiling themselves to a massage.

Do Your Om Thing M
y relationship with yoga is a complicated one. I’ve become fast friends with some poses, while engaging in long-standing feuds with others. It’s taken me some time to accept that yoga is not about performance, but practice – both on and off the mat. My hour-long evening yoga classes are camel humps on the workaday back of the week - the only chance I really get to connect meaningfully with my body and mind. I’ve heard it said that the primary aim of yoga is to help us engage with life with more awareness, compassion and joy. I am (slowly) working towards a synergy between my ‘real’ and ‘yoga’ lives – my inner and outer worlds. Slowing down an overstimulated, overtired and incessantly multitasking mind seems like
a more important (and challenging!) pursuit than balancing on one ear. Navigating an ancient path through a modern world can be challenging, and I’m always relieved to encounter teachers who are dedicated to making it a fun ride. Jo lle Sleebos is the poster girl for yoga as the exercise cum meditation trend idealised by pop culture today. Frighteningly fit, she effortlessly fills the shape of each pose - like cake batter poured into a mould. Watching her move from one asana to the next is a truly humbling experience. As she floats through space, every inch of her body seems to know where it is – and how it’s related to every other part of her.

her
More importantly, though, she returns – time and again - to the importance of bringing the awareness and calm out of the yoga studio and into everyday life. Picking up where a typical yoga class leaves off, Jo lle explores how the practice is meaningful beyond its poses. She is able to stand on her head while keeping both feet firmly on the ground, espousing a spirituality that’s far more rock ‘n roll than oppressive. While I am thrilled to be able to join one of her Yoga Connection Retreats at the idyllic Penhill Farm in the Nuy Valley, I do have a few reservations about my fellow retreatants. I imagine Jo lle’s followers to be groovy, in-the-know types with an enviable combination of spiritual competence and physical ability. Lithe – probably skinny – girls with glossy ponytails and peaceful faces that would look good in a bubble bath ad. Instead, I am met with new moms, old moms, a wholesome farm girl with a wicked sense of humour and a hedge fund manager who often starts laughing before he starts speaking. As someone who’s never been good at sport, I often worry that yoga – like any physical undertaking – will serve as a kind of magnifier of my physical limitations. But I soon realise that this is no place for insecurity. This is my favourite kind of yoga: filled with all different kinds of people of all different shapes and ages. A gentle place for dorks like me to get in shape. Like any great teacher, Jo lle never runs the same game twice. She takes the time to ask what we want to focus on, and somehow manages to stitch together our random desires into a seamless class. Her instructions and adjustments are spot-on. Here is a place where someone can tell me what to do, and I can enjoy identifiable results. Unlike in life, where the rules seem to shift all the time and the standards can seem as high as the moon. Jo lle encourages us to see comparison as inspirational, rather than odious. She seems genuinely happy for us when we manage to will our bodies into a fresh shape. I like practising with her. She makes me feel wonderful and strong and like I have good hair.

Under her expert guidance, almost every retreat participant conquers a new pose. I hope that mine will be chaturanga. The fulcrum of vinyasa, it’s the most difficult part for me – the one that haunts me when I fall asleep at night. A kind of evil nexus, it is where I encounter the impossible, over and over, each time I move through a vinyasa. Alas, doing a chaturanga like Jo lle remains out of my reach. So I decide to try my hand(s) at crow instead. While my fellow yogis are popping into and falling out of the pose, laughing and growing red in the face, I want to make everything pretty. I straighten my mat, squat and spread my hands, widening my fingers and pressing down on each pad. This is the point where my feet are supposed to lift off the mat. “Crow is about maintaining a state of play,” coos poster girl. Yeah, right. “Don’t be afraid of falling!” Not much chance of that, since I’m not really able to lift off the ground at all. A NOTE FROM JOèLLE “I offer these retreats as a way for people to take some time out of their busy schedules to connect to themselves and practise muchneeded self-care through yoga, sleep, good food, time off and engagement with a supportive community in a beautiful natural setting. They can be powerful journeys towards self-love, and a healing space for those who feel the need to reconnect to life in a healthier way.“ DA R RY L G O U W S
Just when I start resigning myself to the fact that the floor is the place for me, I discover side crow – the less beautiful but easier to nail sister pose. It takes a little doing to set up, but finally I am able to lift my feet a few inches off the ground. Triumphant, smug, I am flying. It feels like my first real moment of yoga competence. Needless to say, this becomes my go-to pose for the rest of the retreat, regardless of the fact that it is never again called for. Duly emboldened by my new accomplishment, I am surprised by the humbling I encounter in the evening yin classes. There’s something about holding still – about inhabiting a pose – that can be more scary than the strength and striving of vinyasa. All that anxious chatter to face for an entire hour. Somehow I survive, and when I finish in savasana I don’t feel like I have stretched – I feel like I have churched. My efforts are rewarded with red wine, ‘conscious cocktails’ (God bless Jo lle) and far too much food. Yoga, meet life. I am instantly enamoured of our chef, Lapo Magni. When he speaks about Italian cooking and sustainable ingredients, something in him lights up – as if there’s a big switch on his back that’s just been turned on. It is endlessly endearing, and evident in every dish he serves up with childlike glee. Add to all of this a swim in the dam, a hike up the mountain and a spot of indulgent poolside reading, and you’ve got the perfect unplugged weekend. From the picturesque countryside venue to the rock ‘n roll yoga and conscious cuisine, I can’t fault the experience. If you feel like you need more sustenance than what the average yoga class provides – if you can’t quite relate to traditional yoga philosophy in the midst of everyday life – I can highly recommend an immersive experience with Jo lle. If you’re lucky, you might just be reminded – as was I – that the main reason you do yoga is simply because you love it.

It’s time to face the sun! Makeup artist Debbie Ellis shares her top skincare tips and products for the warmer weather.
A warmer climate can cause a higher rate of oil (sebum) production by your sebaceous glands, leaving your skin shiny rather than glowing. Using a gel cleanser for effective removal of oil and sweat residue from the skin’s surface can be helpful during the spring and summer months. Look out for cooling, soothing and disinfecting natural ingredients like peppermint, aloe vera, lavender and tea tree oil.
B E AU T Y
Keep your moisturiser light, harnessing the naturally nourishing powers of ingredients like cucumber, primrose oil, argan oil, jojoba seed oil and flower extracts.
Look after your lips this summer by staying hydrated and keeping them moisturised with safe natural ingredients like shea butter, beeswax and vitamin E.

The number one summer skincare essential is, of course, sun protection. Your skin makes vitamin D naturally when it is exposed to UV rays from the sun. How much vitamin D you make depends on many things, including how old you are, how dark your skin is, and how strong the sunlight is where you live. Whenever possible, it’s better to get vitamin D from your diet or vitamin supplements rather than from exposure to UV rays. Dietary sources and supplements don’t increase skin cancer risk, and are typically more reliable ways of getting the amount of vitamin D you need.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF UV RADIATION *UVA rays have the least energy of all the UV rays. They can cause skin cells to age, as well as inflict some indirect damage on the DNA of cells. UVA rays are mainly linked to long-term skin damage such as wrinkles, but they are also thought to play a role in some skin cancers. *UVB rays have slightly more energy than UVA rays. They can directly damage the DNA in skin cells, are the main cause of sunburn, and are thought to cause most skin cancers. *UVC rays have more energy than the other types of UV rays. Fortunately, because of this, they react with the ozone high in our atmosphere and don’t reach the ground, so they are not normally a risk factor for skin cancer. But UVC rays can also come from some manmade sources, such as arc welding torches, mercury lamps, and the UV sanitising bulbs used to kill bacteria and other germs (for example in water, air, food, or on surfaces). It’s not possible (or healthy) to avoid sunlight completely, but there are ways to help ensure you’re not getting too much sun: *Wear a hat to protect your head, face and neck. *Wear sunglasses that block UV rays to protect your eyes and the skin around them. *Use sunscreen to help protect skin that isn’t covered with clothing.

WISDOM

TOWARDS
Conscious Commerce by Maria Kostelac
Large corporations today employ between 200 to 400 times more people than what populated any of Europe’s most prominent medieval cities. It’s predicted that by 2020, the size of the global middle class will have almost tripled to 4.9 billion, from 1.8 billion in 2009. At last count, the number of unique mobile connections operating across the internet outnumbered humans by 1.2 billion. This dense interconnectivity removes the effect of the physical barriers (like oceans and mountains) that forced separation between nations. It also means that more machines than humans are communicating with one another to share information about and make decisions on behalf of humans in real time. As citizens, we have instant access to all of human knowledge and history via the super-computers casually commuting our pockets and handbags in daily life. Such power could not even have been imagined by the leaders of vast empires of eras past. An unprecedented public relations paradox exists for the governments and corporations that once monopolised the communication channels now democratised by the internet. Those with authority over these civil, corporate and electronic populations have far greater socioeconomic reach, influence and political power than any of the conquests the invasions of monarchs and moguls could ever have delivered. Simultaneously and somewhat conversely, the same technologies affecting the democratisation of the planet’s airwaves, information flows and broadcast resources afford a single country’s military the detonation power capable of inflicting summary ruin upon the earth. The simultaneous presence of wide-distribution (democratic) and high-concentration (autocratic) forces of power presented by these scenarios has not been possible in all of living history. Given these compounding trends, the idea of human prosperity continuing to be driven by ‘consumerism’ - the premise that spending money and consuming goods is good for economies - is a daunting and wholly annihilistic prospect which poses an existential risk as formidable as atomic fallout. Conservative estimates from The Global Footprint Network hypothesise that servicing of Earth’s 7.1 billion humans by current American middle-class expectations will require four more earths (5.4, if we go by the equivalent income standards norms in the UAE). Because these calculations exclude the analysis of potential eco-system collapse, carbon emission effects or sustainability of cropland (i.e. the package effect of consumption), these numbers are criticized as being a drastic underestimation of actual impacts. By such estimations, it can be argued that the only thing more detrimental to ‘the future’ than global fallout is global prosperity. But ‘commerce’ need not be synonymous with ‘consumption’. To relegate ‘the effects of commerce’ on humanity’s history as being either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ would be to ignore the wisdom we can tap from the hard lessons and stunning achievements of past experience. It can be argued, for example, that little has achieved more for world peace than supply chain management.

Ultimately, commerce is a tool, employed by humanity to transformational ends. Applied consciously to support a co-creative, generative vision of the future, business could rapidly become the greatest force for good on the planet. The opportunity is here now for every business and individual to direct and shape commercial dynamics to the superlative advantage of the planet, our species and all future generations. Undoubtedly, old guards will suffer fear and challenge the change. The tenets of venerated economic theory and practices will break down and attract revision, remedy and even redress. The schizophrenic scenarios created by the analogue world from which enterprise-era conventions sprung will be challenged even more vehemently as the digital age develops roots. But when well-worn cynicism, righteous indignation and skeptical debate extinguish themselves, the question will remain as to how humanity’s implosive trajectory is averted and converted to one that could leverage the skills, capital, minds, collective will, distribution lines and other latent means we have in ‘commerce’ toward profitably (yes - profitably!) serving our greatest expectations. How we answer the question will define the outlook and philosophy business architects will be digitizing for artificial intelligence and machine learning to deduct. It is these decision points that will be algorised. We have this moment to dream and design how technology serves a sovereign or enslaved humanity - a self-enhancing or self-consuming world. Arriving at a point of achieving a more conscious expression of commerce is about each of us, as individuals, interrogating the undercurrents fuelling our conduct and decisions. What predicates our values, character, perceptions, decisions and convictions? What and who is ultimately served by their perpetuation? Recognising that any one person’s sphere of influence wields resonance and consequence - by every thought, decision, pursuit, investment, purchase, commitment and conviction - is the point of reckoning we need to reach and breach for our collective consciousness to shift from scarcity mind to commercial creations of thriving abundance. More so now than ever, the future is limited only to what we fear, fail to see as ‘wholly possible’, or believe we are unable to actively influence (whether as CEO or server). Each of us is a well point from which abundance flows and flourishes. To settle for the title of ‘consumers’ or constant ‘customers’ over ‘creators’, ‘citizens’ and ‘earth children’ is to deny the essence of our being and interconnection with all. Recognising, respecting and curating the unprecedented power wielded from within our individual sphere of influence is our present calling. Your work beyond this? Read. Ask. Listen. Design. Desist. Activate.

Capturing Confidence Confidence. Perhaps you feel you’ve never had it, or you used to have it until that thing that happened to leave you drowning in a sea of self-doubt.
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Ana s Nin
This is a little article about a big problem. Huge numbers of women lack confidence and self-belief, and most of us don’t know why. Whether you’re crippled beneath the muffling weight of self-judgment or simply experience annoying moments of doubt, it’s likely you’ve already tried the exhausting process of seeking validation outside of yourself. Particularly as women, we are often conditioned to seek our wholeness and value in others, basing our worth on who loves or doesn’t love us, the extra five kilos we need to lose, or whether we can juggle three tasks simultaneously and with a smile. The new women’s revolution can be seen as an evolution from being otherfocused to inner-focused – bringing our attention back to who we are rather than who we think we should be. It’s a reclaiming of scattered energy, and a path of transformation towards innate, authentic and embodied power. Relinquishing self-limiting beliefs and their accompanying internal and external drama may be a liberating path, but it’s rarely an easy one. If you’re lucky, you may encounter ‘Confidence Crusader’ Abigail K along yours. Equal parts mentor, friend and guide, Abigail has made it her life’s work to help guide a generation of women towards the joyful play and simple presence of creative femininity at home with itself.
68 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
We first discovered Abigail through her work as a specialist women’s portrait photographer. At a technical level, photography may be seen as “the instantaneous translation of a three-dimensional scene into a two-dimensional image according to the reflected luminance levels of the objects in the scene” (at least according to writer and photographer Ming Thein). But that’s a very cold way of looking at things – the kind of approach that almost inevitably results in feelings of awkwardness and inferiority. Portrait photographers will tell you that their discipline is 10% photography and 90% psychology. On the surface, it’s a simple task: person stands in front of the camera, and photographer takes a few photos, selects, edits and delivers them. Done. But the truth is, it’s often got far less to do with the technical skills of the photographer, and more to do with their relationship to their subjects.
Potent relief for irritated and inflamed skin
Aside from the fact that she is obviously gifted with the camera, Abigail’s real skill lies in excavating what’s at the core of a woman, and then helping her to bring that to the fore. She’s adept at engaging with the face in front of the lens – connecting, understanding, coaching and remaining genuinely curious about what it is that lights her up. She’s warm, patient, light-hearted and ever-perceptive of subtle differences in posture, expression, behaviour and mood throughout.
“I want to create a space where women can walk in and know immediately that there’s so much more to the experience than just the snapping of a camera shutter.”
Soothing and calming, leaving you with clear, healthy skin.
“Why are you here? What are you an expert in? What’s different about the way you do what you do? How do you want people to feel when they encounter you? What do you want to remember about yourself?” Abigail asks questions like these in a sincere and comprehensive pre-shoot meeting, where she really takes the time to help the women with whom she works to get real with themselves.
We’ve boosted Baobab oil’s natural anti-inflammatory properties with Calendula and Schizandra, both excellent for stressed, sensitive and hyper-reactive skin.
While she does work with a wonderfully talented and equally personable makeup and hair artist (@the_little_harlequin), contribution, comfort and creative confidence are more important to this photographer than flawless skin and waiflike waistlines. Her professional path is one forged in love, and the quality and authenticity of her head shots, personal confidence shoots, personal branding shoots and lifestyle portraits speak for themselves.
Together, these natural ingredients offer gentle yet potent relief for irritated and inflamed skin conditions associated with eczema or dry psoriasis.
The bravery required to get in front of the camera is just the beginning, and Abigail has created the Confident Creative Academy as an online sisterhood for personal and professional confidence for creatives and entrepreneurs. “I want to help female freelancers and entrepreneurs prioritise their personal mastery, business competence and creative freedom so they can confidently do life and business on their own terms, without the loneliness and self-doubt. If you love being creative in your personal life and freelance business but you just don’t have the confidence to market yourself or price your products, it’s for you.If you have awesome ideas but you don’t ever turn them into something you can be proud of because you don’t know where to start, it’s for you. Or if you’re still struggling to spark your creativity because you’re constantly comparing yourself to others in your field, it’s for you.” Packed with online courses, practical tool kits, live Q&A’s, guest expert masterclasses and more, the Confident Creative Academy offers everything from pricing calculator spreadsheets to a supportive online community “where ugly crying is welcome.” A real testament to the magic that can happen when women gather together to empower themselves. BUILDING E M OT I O N A L RESILIENCE IN
children
by Tarryn Pickup
Challenges in life are inevitable, but they don’t always have to yield negative emotional consequences. Instead, they can be reframed as positive experiences especially for children. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress, adversity, failure, challenges and even trauma. Rather than something that children innately have or don’t have, it’s a skill that can be nurtured and developed. When helping children confront challenges, it’s important to be aware of your own modelled behaviour and world views. Try not to slip into the default mode of simply repeating the (possibly outdated) actions, responses and coping mechanisms of your own parents. Wherever possible, it’s great to encourage kids to use their own inner resources and creativity. That said, there are a number of tried-andtested tools that parents can use to assist them in guiding their children’s attitudes and behaviours in the face of stressful situations like starting school, bullying, moving home, divorce and sibling rivalry, to name just a few.

ON PLANT MEDICINE and not being good I
grew up wanting to be good - at everything. The kind of student who goes to secondary sources. Caught up in a kind of striving that sometimes still feels bigger than me, I wanted to show up fully, know how things really worked, leave everything I encountered at least a bit better than I’d found it. This evolved into something I now meet frequently in my 30-something-yearold female peers. It’s a subtle variant on the old version of perfectionism. We don’t want to look good, we want to be good. Good at work, good at sex, good custodians of the planet. While our will – tough and fibrous and sustaining throughout all that we do – is beautiful in its way, it’s also driven by a subtle but ever-present fear: what if we were to stop? We don’t want to know the answer to that question, so we never stop. We write our thousand words, cook our organic dinners, call our parents. Good, good, good. We think that we’re committed to showing up as sincerely and authentically as possible, somehow continuing to miss the irony of grinding our way to freedom. While I’ve always considered my life to be good, I’ve also always wondered how much better it could be. Growth, to me, seems to be more about revealing than fixing. Which is why, when I first hear someone whose insights I respect deeply describe his encounter with ibogaine as his most consciousness-expanding yet, I know I simply have to go there.
WHAT IS IBOGAINE? Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive substance found in a number of plant sources, principally in a member of the Apocynaceae family known as iboga. Iboga has been used for centuries by traditional communities in West Africa for ritual and healing purposes. In the early 60s, it was found that ingesting it could disrupt substance use disorder in certain individuals. Today, it’s lauded by proponents as a natural means of improving depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviours and other quality of life indicators. It’s also fast becoming a popular vehicle for the expansion of consciousness amongst the curious-minded.

I find my version of a modern-day shaman in the unabashedly outspoken, refreshingly optimistic and wonderfully open-hearted Tamara Wensing, and follow her to the picturesque Fynbos Estate in the Swartland to take the ‘medicine’ to which she attributes her own freedom. What do I expect from my first ibogaine experience? Nothing short of a one-woman self-realisation show, of course. I’ll be handed a virtual dossier on myself – one full of the information I’ve been seeking for so many years. I’ll be laid bare, draw cosmic conclusions on everything from the deeply personal to the overwhelmingly global. It’s easy to think of it as an answer, a teleology, a means of emerging as some advanced, 2.0 version of myself. I keenly swallow Tamara’s three white capsules and lie in the darkness basically doing the same thing I do most days – chasing after insights, answers and liberation within this lifetime.
I run people and events through the scrambler of my mind, but all I come out with is different variations of the same frustration, churned into little bits of hallucinatory nonsense. I get to the edge of what I think could be a worthwhile insight, try to pull the whole of it toward me and end up losing it – over and over – to a confused landscape devoid of any significant narrative flow. “You’re too in your brain. You have to turn toward the feeling,” encourages my Sea Point shaman. I make this towardness my mission for the next 10 hours. My mind looks for things to rest upon… Forward and back it moves, bristling against what feel like stark reminders of its own ineptitude at every turn. Finally, I am released by the reprieve of sunlight and another human voice. “How are you feeling, angel?” Tamara possesses the rare gift of asking this in a way that demonstrates, unequivocally, that she really cares about the answer.
What I’m met with instead is a wasteland of coagulated half-thoughts – strings of not-so-charming non-sequiturs in a state I can only describe as the most intolerable of psychological purgatories.
“Disappointed, to be honest. I don’t think I did it right.”
I tune into my breath and wait for the stirring of the ancient rumblings within me. Others have encountered jaguars, communicated with entities, found themselves surrounded by dancing Bwiti tribesmen. I am left feeling like it’s Versailles in my brain – room upon room of unexpected shiny things that I can’t touch.
This feels, at first, like the pithiest of consolations. But after letting it percolate for a few days, I start to edge towards the truth of it. What if it’s time to become softer in my seeking - to lighten up in my quest to live more deeply?
74 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
She laughs in her gentle, non-derisive way. “It sounds like you got all the answers you needed.”
And yet, with characteristically unfailing curiosity and resolve, I decide to try again. I’ve dipped my toe into this wholly foreign inner landscape, and I am now ready to be fully immersed. My second encounter with ibogaine is at Tamara’s home - every inch of which demonstrates her commitment to serving up more truth and joy. I drink the medicine, close my eyes and repeat the mantra I’ve brought – with all the humility I can muster - to the experience: trust, submission, transmission. I am learning that it isn’t always possible to go deeper and know what you’re doing. While I lie there in the dark, remembering to breathe, I start to hear the ringing I’ve been warned about – the harbinger of the ibogaine journey. Rather than rattled, I am relieved. Here we go! The plant starts to demand nothing short of everything from me physically. I am dizzy, nauseas, and can’t move a muscle. This better be worth it. I breathe into the space that fills my belly and chest and count myself down an imaginary staircase. Finally - when things start to get really quiet - there it is. The fear I didn’t know was there. Like a giant manatee, it swims up to the surface. As if through some cosmic loudspeaker, it booms every imaginable foreboding at me – from workaday anxieties to scathing self-doubt and existential terror. “Your cat could die any day now! Your mother’s cancer is going to return! You’re going to lose everything you’ve worked so hard to build!” And, of course, that old favourite – “You’re just not good enough.” I’m sure this is why most people don’t like to meditate, or to surrender their locus of cognitive control over to anything outside of themselves. Who knows what could be in there? It’s somewhat unnerving to think that this beast has been in there all along, lurking just beneath the surface. I couldn’t have felt more vulnerable. But a part of me has called me here to hear these words, and I am determined to see this fear – as gigantic and voracious as it is – as a siren, beckoning me over to the other side. I can feel, in this moment, that the fear is plugged into a lineage – one with a power that cannot be denied.
I see my mother at my age - a beautiful, fragile thing riddled with insecurity. I want to embrace her, tell her how well she’s doing. I see her mother, too - and all the mothers before her. I see these women with boundless compassion - I understand their fear, am shown its original purpose. But it isn’t a narrative I’d want to pass down to a daughter. So I make a concerted effort to visualise sectioning off my mind as its own territory, bounded and sufficient and united in and of itself. It feels like a quieting, a release. The crossing of a threshold into an open field. I am incredibly uncomfortable, lying here under the tyranny of the ringing and the dizziness and the nausea and the sweat. But I am also more fully embodied than ever. I am living in my own geography, in the space between my fingers and the tip of my nose. After revelling for some time in my sinuous cocoon, I am treated to an alkaloid-induced chiaroscuro of creativity, bearing witness to the most outstanding feats of visual and semantic artistry. While the colours and shapes are breathtaking, it’s the words I wish I could remember today. I make one last autobiographical stop, watching from a distance as my 13-year-old self slow dances with her first love – a spirited lover of life who lost his own far too soon. My heart swells with the pride of having known him, if only for a while. After the dizzying effort of making it this far into the ibogaine journey, I finally do what it is I now believe I encountered the plant to learn – I lay down all effort, all inquiry, all needing. I stop all searching, all working to unearth the life that is already here. I open my eyes 12 hours later, and they are wet with gratitude. I once read that, “If you want to make good art, it’s important to stay loose.” This is a very loose piece about an experience that has been at once wholly incongruent and deeply significant for me. Writing it feels like trying to recommend a book I’ve read years ago. I know it’s really good, but I can’t remember (let alone relay) exactly why. I offer this to you in the spirit of what I’ve gained from my experience with ibogaine. I don’t think it’s poetic, concise or effective enough in conveying the essence of the experience. But it’s real, and sometimes that is better than good.

MYCOLOGY, MEANING & METAMORPHOSIS by Quentin Crofford
THE DISCOVERY Ancient artefacts and cave paintings reveal the ritual use of psilocybin mushrooms by civilisations as far flung as Central America, Europe, Australia and Africa. The earliest date from between 6 000 and 9 000 years ago, and are carved deep within the caves of the mountain ranges of Tassili in Algeria. The images depict largeheaded figures, some of which are floating in space or appear to be leaving their bodies. In one scene, a row of masked figures hold mushrooms in their right hands, with parallel dotted lines linking the tops of their heads to the mushrooms in what is likely a reference to the mind-altering effects of the mystical fungi.
76 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
In Central America, psilocybin mushrooms were referred to as ‘teonanacatl’ (‘flesh of the gods’), and offered as a sacrament. This was, however, quashed by 16th-century Spanish conquistadors and Catholic inquisitors, who viewed the practice as abhorrent and ‘ungodly’. In the 16th-century ethnographic research study Florentine Codex, Spanish priest Bernardino de Sahag n comments scathingly on the use of psilocybin mushrooms by the Aztecs: “The first thing to be eaten at the feast were small black mushrooms that they called teonanacatl and bring on drunkenness, hallucinations and even lechery; they ate these before the dawn…with honey; and when they began to feel the effects, they began to dance, some sang and others wept… When the drunkenness of the mushrooms had passed, they spoke with one another of the visions they had seen.”
“The potential significance of psychedelics for psychiatry and psychology is comparable to the value the microscope has for biology or the telescope has for astronomy.” - Psychiatrist and psychedelic research pioneer Stan Grof
Former New York banker, amateur mycologist and Vice President for Public Relations at J.P. Morgan & Co., R. Gordon Wasson travelled to Mexico in 1955 in search of native people using mushrooms ceremonially. He finally encountered Mazatec curandera Maria Sabina in a meeting that would forever change the course of Western culture and, regrettably, eventually ruin Sabina’s life. Sabina led Wasson and his travel companion Allan Richardson in a ritual ceremony called a ‘velada’, making them among the first documented Westerners to experience the ‘spirit’ of the mushrooms. Sabina was ostracised by her community for sharing guarded Mazatec traditions with ‘outsiders’. Her home was burned to the ground, and she was finally left poverty stricken. Wasson went on to publish the groundbreaking feature Seeking the Magic Mushroom in Life Magazine in 1957, as well as six positive reports on LSD in Time Magazine between 1954 and 1959. These constituted the ‘first cause’ of the psychedelic Big Bang in Western civilisation, and culminated in a 21st-century scientific, spiritual and psychological revolution.
“The mushroom permits you to see, more clearly than our perishing mortal eye can see, vistas beyond the horizons of this life, to travel backwards and forwards in time, to enter other planes of existence, even (as the Indians say) to know God.” - R. Gordon Wasson
WISDOM
THE RESURRECTION As with the known universe, the physical properties and mechanism of action of psilocybin are now fairly well understood. As with the ever-elusive dark matter, however, the experiences it induces have remained largely mysterious. Until recently, that is. Modern psilocybin research is being conducted at esteemed institutions the likes of Johns Hopkins University, NYU, Harvard and Imperial College London. The studies are guided by well-respected scientists with the open-minded skepticism required in a field fraught with mysticism and taboo. Implementing valuable protocols gained from research in the 60s in combination with modern brain imaging technology and rigorous scientific procedures, we are now able to add pieces to the mystical puzzle. An image (figure 1) showing the functional connectivity of a brain on a placebo alongside one on psilocybin induced a paradigm shift in understanding the effects of the molecule. The connections are not random. Rather, they facilitate communication between regions of the brain that share functionality. This, coupled with the downregulation of the default mode network (from which most of our negative unconscious bias centering around ourselves emanates), has shown to induce a reduced sense of self, increased cognitive flexibility and non-linear thinking as predictable outcomes. Numerous researchers have investigated the effects of psilocybin on patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and existential anxiety brought on by terminal illness, as well as those struggling to quit smoking. All three of these states induce a psychological feedback loop out of which it is seemingly impossible to break. Psilocybin is said to open a window to the self without judgment, and give impetus to disrupt negative thought patterns. The more profound the mystical experience, the more effective the treatment. Approximately two thirds of research subjects report their encounter with psilocybin as being amongst the top five most meaningful experiences of their lives, with a third rating it as the most meaningful - equated to the birth of a child or the death of a loved one.
78 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S WA R E H O U S E . CO M
THE RISE AND FALL In 1959, Swiss chemist and LSD inventor Albert Hoffman was the first person to isolate psilocybin, the active molecule in ‘magic mushrooms’. Sandoz - Hoffman’s employer - marketed and sold it to physicians and clinicians worldwide for use in psychedelic psychotherapy. Great excitement ensued thanks to the efficacy of the molecule and its vast array of potential uses. The widespread recreational use of psychedelics in the 60s catalysed the counterculture of free love and the anti-war movement in America, but also led to a significant output of propaganda instigating the ‘war on drugs’ (or - as Graham Hancock more aptly refers to it - ‘the war on consciousness’). This was galvanised by The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, which classified psilocybin as a Schedule 1 drug, said to demonstrate: *A high potential for abuse *No currently accepted medical treatment *A lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision This was a hammer blow to psilocybin research. To offer perspective - heroin is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, with cocaine coming in at Schedule 2. It’s little wonder that all psychedelic research was driven underground until its resurgence in mainstream academia in 1990. THE ASCENSION The results of modern psilocybin research have been nothing short of miraculous. NYU published a study in which a single moderate dose of psilocybin was safely administered, in conjunction with psychotherapy, to a cohort of 29 patients suffering from cancer-related psychological distress, including anxiety and depression. The experience was shown to produce rapid and sustained anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, decreased cancer-related existential distress, increased spiritual wellbeing and greater quality of life, and was associated with improved attitudes towards death. The antidepressant response rate came in at 80% at the six-and-a-half-month follow-up. A Johns Hopkins study showed a 78% and 83% decrease in clinician-rated end-of-life depression and anxiety (respectively) after six months of psilocybin treatment. An Imperial College London study of 12 participants suffering from treatment-resistant depression for an average of 18 years were each given two doses of psilocybin seven days apart. Sixty-seven percent of the subjects reported being in remission (depression-free) a week post-treatment, with 42% remaining thus after three months. Johns Hopkins researchers published a study on 15 longtime smokers who had all failed to quit on numerous occasions. After taking three doses of psilocybin over an eight-week period, 80% were still abstinent at the six-month follow-up, compared to an approximate 35% of those taking verenicline, which is widely considered to be the most effective smoking cessation drug. A small NYU study meant simply to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of psilocybin treatment on 10 people struggling with alcohol use disorder yielded arresting results. On the whole, the participants showed a dramatic decline in drinking that persisted through their final nine-month follow-up. The findings were significant enough to warrant further exploration, and NYU is currently conducting a double-blind placebocontrolled clinical trial on the use of psilocybin in the treatment of alcohol use disorder. What has clearly emerged is that psilocybin, administered in conjunction with appropriate psychotherapy, could become a novel pharmacological-psychosocial treatment modality for numerous disorders, with the list of possible uses growing with each new study.

“A few years back, I had a vision of creating a retreat like nothing ever seen before. One that would inspire, move and touch participants - where they would become childlike again, experience true joy and fall in love with life all over again. Where they would discover their true nature and find a new appreciation for their own uniqueness and the talent they have to offer the world. It would have to shift them beyond their comfort zone, but most of all - it would have to be an experience so profound that they would never live their lives the same way again… This retreat is not about going to stare at a rose in a cave and hope for enlightenment. This is about adventure, discovery, fun, dancing, celebration, transformation, new friends and, most of all, love – the ultimate success.” Brett Shuttleworth

The Place of Angels Time is the currency of life. We have about 2.5 billion heartbeats with which to savour our lives, and stopping the relentless march of activity to slip into the sweet space of absolute rest is necessary medicine.
While we can’t all become urban monks, we can take a few days to snap out of the trance of perpetual motion. Almost anything will work again if you unplug it for a while – including you. Your version of unplugging could look like taking a few sacred moments to stretch, nap, read a book or make love. My favourite way to take my foot off the accelerator and pull over for a bit of a breather is to escape the madding crowd for a few days of yoga and downtime in a balmy natural setting.

Arriving at Angala Boutique Hotel in Franschhoek, I am almost immediately pulled out of an incessant backlog of mental processing and back into my body, where I belong. The name ‘Angala’ refers to a mystical time eons ago, when the earth was first formed. A time during which the divine was gathering energy to create, and the earth was attended to by angels to keep it safe. The poetic tale will resonate if you are lucky enough to find yourself spending a night or two at the winelands hideaway. This place is sacred. This time is special. There’s something quite magical about reality when experienced with full presence, and Angala is an easy place to do so.
“Kundalini is the yoga of awareness, which focuses on enhancing one’s intuition and strengthening the energy field. Kundalini aims to draw forth the creative potential of an individual to have strong values, be truthful, and focus on compassion and consciousness.” – Bestselling Author, Speaker & Coach Gabby Bernstein My loved ones are my greatest motivation for wanting to stop time. The notion of love as a verb is a clich for a reason. It’s a moving meditation, laced through with attention and care. Why do we love people? Because they see us. How do we love another skillfully - take our beautiful and pure intentions and find expression for them? One moment at a time. Angala is a place for love. From the intimacy of our suite (complete with luxurious linen, cosy fireplace and private ‘secret garden’) to the heated plunge pool and blissful stillness, it’s the perfect place for pulling over from life’s superhighway and dedicating time to communication and communion. It’s said that to truly love and acknowledge others is a pure path to finding oneself. Another – for many – is yoga. I am fortunate enough to find myself at Angala on a Yoga, Meditation & Sound Retreat with GuruRamDas, a kundalini yoga studio based in the heart of Cape Town.
Brought to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1969, kundalini aims to equip practitioners with the tools to calm the nervous system, restore energy and cultivate compassion. Yogi Bhajan predicted that these would be tumultuous times, and made it his life’s work to help his followers grow their vitality in the face of it all. We all need rituals to help snap us out of the trance of the modern world and into a deeper interface with life, where we can experience true rest and wellbeing. A kundalini kriya – a series of postures, breath and sound that works toward a specific outcome – seems to be a great ritual for bringing about a quick-phase shift in physiology and consciousness. GuruRamDas Co-founder Ilana Fintz explains that the kundalini classes at Angala are focused on detoxification – purifying and oxygenating the bloodstream, increasing the body’s energy flow and stimulating the pituitary gland. I can certainly feel the many benefits of the flowing blood, pumping oxygen and elevated heart rate I achieve under her guidance. While increasing the velocity is one aspect of the kundalini ‘release’, quiet decompression is another. Unsurprisingly, it’s in Ilana’s restorative classes that my body really knows what to do. My neck, hips, lower back and hamstrings have been waiting for permission to release.

Angala’s sauna and steam room are the perfect complement to the purification process. Braving the almost oppressive heat after a morning of kundalini, I imagine my sweat as a river flowing through me, cleaning out the gunk from upstream and making for a healthier internal environment. A healthy body has a constant flow of water moving through it, and I am happy to be clearing the decks for a fresh start to the week. Nature herself functions under a perfect ebb and flow. Hers is one of counter-balancing principles - heat and cold balance with life and death, growth and decay. Emboldened by her wisdom, I move between the searing heat of the sauna and the bitter cold of the deceptively beguiling nearby eco pool. The stark contrast is enough to catapult me squarely into the present. Emerging numbly from the eco pool to feel the sunlight thawing out every cell in my body is a sensational experience. Like a plant, I drink it in. The glorious warming is reminiscent of something I’ve learnt in Ilana’s kundalini classes – the breath of fire. A breathing technique frequently practised in kundalini, it’s a rhythmic breath in and out of the nose that involves a corresponding extension and release of the diaphragm. Once I’ve settled into it, I come to enjoy the internal combustion. As in the roaring fireplace in the snug lounge outside the Angala yoga studio, the flame is constantly being formed anew – as am I. Leveraging the breath for transformation is a cornerstone of kundalini. Some of my favourite moments on retreat are those in which we are invited to settle into the parasympathetic nervous system by becoming consciously active participants in the breathing process. The daily breathwork sessions encourage us to direct and regulate our breathing into therapeutic patterns that I resolve to call upon when I am in need of grace, poise, focus, clarity, energy and calm after leaving the sanctuary of Angala.

Conscious breathing is a ritual in holistic nourishment. Mealtime on retreat is another. The opportunity to pause and embrace a slower quality of time weaves itself as a welcome thread throughout the weekend, and is extended to each meal - where we are encouraged to really take the time to nourish our bodies, absorb the nutrients and relax into the digestive process. Drawn largely from unprocessed sources, this food is life. This is how we get strong. Add conversation that serves, entertains and nourishes in its way, and you’ll understand why eating at Angala is something that just can’t be done in a hurry.
The food of love, music is another gentle healer called upon on retreat. A respectful extension of its surrounds, Angala is imbued with the delicious symphony of nature. It is sung by the birds, croaked by the frogs and chirped by the crickets – the song of life filled with nuances we tend to miss. The harmony between Ilana and her husband (GuruRamDas Co-founder Anton) is also made manifest as they join together to play the gongs, chimes, bowls, forks and other instruments of their transporting sound healing journeys. We are treated to the deeply meditative experience each day, and I am left with a better feel for life’s cadence by the end of the weekend.
While all these experiences weave together into a tapestry of softening and surrender, there is a single moment from the weekend that continues to stand out as the most defining. I am in the plunge pool with one of my most beloved humans. We are treating ourselves to time under the moon – where things seem to take on a quality that is at once softer and more stirring. I gaze up into the vastness, and it pulls at me – as if I am being synced up to the sky. I think about where I am sitting in this moment – a focal point where infinity collides into a single point of time and space. It’s too hard to grasp, but it is there. It is everywhere. Weighing my daily problems against the scale of what’s above and around me, I am recalibrated. I am also brought to the sobering realisation that we only get a moment of time here as the people we think we are. What are we going to do with it? I can tell you this much - going on retreat with GuruRamDas at Angala is a really good option.

KIDS HELPING KIDS
In January 2018, 11-year-old Abriella Bredell was the youngest person to complete the Robben Island Channel Swim - a gruelling 7,9 km swim from Robben Island to Blouberg Strand. Her motivation? A desire to inspire other youngsters to work toward the achievement of their dreams, as well as to do her bit to raise funds for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Next year, Abriella will be joined by her younger sister Issataya (10). She will swim the 11,9 km route around Robben Island, while Issataya braves the 8,5 km swim from Cape Point to False Bay. “We know we are young and dreaming big, but we want to show other kids – especially those less fortunate than us - how important it is to believe in themselves and their dreams. We also want to help them in a way that they aren’t able to help themselves,” shares Abriella. Red Cross is the only specialist hospital dedicated entirely to children in Southern Africa, and manages 260 000 patient visits annually. Since 1994, the fundraising arm of the hospital - the Children’s Hospital Trust - has helped raise funds for building upgrades, new equipment and skills development programmes. The Bredell sisters have partnered with the Children’s Hospital Trust to raise funds for the upgrade and expansion of the Red Cross Emergency Centre. They would love you to be a part of “making history” and helping the children by donating towards the Trust as a sign of your support.
