Put your resolve to work

Strange how time seems to speed up every year, this New Year seems to have come around so fast. I listened to a meditation teacher speaking about how to speed up your actions at the same time as slowing down your mind. Doing this dissipates stress in a highly effective way. The logic is simple, just because you have a lot to do doesn’t mean your head needs to start spinning. It’s often these simple ideas that contribute towards really making life work. January carries the theme of making resolutions. Often we tend to create goals with lofty high ideals and practically speaking, unlikely outcomes. Even if you have given up on making them, spend some time having a conversation with yourself, a kind of debrief if you like, find out those things that are most important to you and resolve to do more of them. Perhaps just choose one resolution to follow. A decision to live more simply, will serve you in many ways. It will lessen your environmental footprint, keep you de-stressed, save money and give you more time. It might not be necessary to upgrade your car, your phone, your house or get the latest gadget. You could choose to buy yourself more quality time by consuming less. Whatever your highest aspirations might be, I wish you well on your way to achieving them and an excellent year of abundant wellness.

What is RAW FOOD? There is a huge movement towards eating raw. Some of Hollywood’s favourites, think Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon, Darryl Hannah and Cher have helped inspire an international raw food movement.

Results are rapid; just one day of eating only fresh living foods has a noticeable effect. There are thousands of on-line and print recipes and resources available.

TIP AFTER YOUR DETOX, MAKE EATING WELL AND INCORPORATING ELIMINATIVE FOODS INTO YOUR DIET INTO A DAILY PRACTISE.

Enhance renewal and cleansing with a daily intake of foods that help your body eliminate naturally. Aim for foods that promote an alkaline environment in your system. Disease thrives in an acidic environment so a pH of 7.4 is beneficial.

Start off by improving your relationship with food. Focus on what you can enjoy eating as opposed to what you can’t or should not eat. Don’t even think about the don’ts. Remember that what you resist persists so set your mindset up in a way to bring in healthy food instead of concentrating on pushing away the unhealthy.

NUT MILK

ALMOND MILK

A raw food diet opens up countless new food combinations most of which are surprisingly mouthwatering. If you want to move away from dairy or just experiment with an alternative healthy beverage, mix up some nut milk. Be careful though, it’s very addictive. It is also very versatile, add some raw cacao, some banana or vanilla and you have a real treat. Although nuts are filled with calories they also have a very high nutrition value. Because of this the body registers a high level of nutrients. This prevents cravings and can be the perfect solution to keeping a balanced weight. Use nut milk in cereal or drink it on its own.

RAW NUT MILK (ALMOND OR CASHEW)

Wellness Raw Almonds 500g

YIELD: 6 cups 1 cup raw almonds or cashews 2 cups filtered water for soaking 6 cups filtered water for blending 1/4 cup honey, or a few dates or stevia (optional, for sweetening) Fine mesh filter if you prefer a smoother consistency Blender 1. Soak the almonds or cashews in 2 cups of filtered water overnight, or up to 24 hours.

Once they have finished soaking, drain them under water 2. Blend the nuts plus the 6 cups of water on high until you get a smooth mixture.

3. Add your preferred sweetener. Blend on high for a few minutes.

3. Pour the liquid through a mesh filter into a jug.

4. Store in fridge for up to a week.

ADD SOME FLAVOUR Nut milk tastes great on its own, but if you want a change there are all sorts of goodies you can add and it will taste totally different.

Add a few tablespoons of carob or cacao powder to make a tasty chocolate nut milk.

Add a cup of strawberries for delicious strawberry milk.

Add a few vanilla beans for a delicious homely treat.

Add a banana or two for a creamy banana milk.

Add banana and raw cacao for a yummy chocolate banana shake.

I know that this is traditionally the time of year to make New Year’s Resolutions that will hopefully improve our lives, but really, after 30–odd years of (mostly) failed resolutions, I have to ask, “How can I truly motivate myself?”

A

t first, it’s not so bad. A month or so of post-holiday, guilt-enforced exercise, followed by a tougher month of willpower-driven abstinence from all things sugary or wheaty or alcoholy but then along comes Valentine’s Day and a hot date at a vibey restaurant serving kick-ass mojito’s, hand made gnocchi and a dark chocolate ganache and you abandon all hope.

What if your intention was to pay off your credit cards? Or save money? Or find a better job? Or spend more time with your children? Or study a short course?

Or improve your love life? Or just be less stressed and more you?

I invite you right now to play a game with me that will help you find deeper motivation.

Choose ONE resolution you’d like to tackle this year, and spend five minutes working with it. Go on – choose one thing you’d like to achieve this year.

Now take your time, sit back comfortably, holding this magazine so that your body is relaxed and your spine supported, letting your arms relax onto your lap. Take a nice deep breath and hold it in for five counts, then sigh your breath out. Good. Now as you continue slowly reading, allow yourself to become aware of your centre, behind your belly button. Just allow your centre to relax and embrace the gift you’re about to give yourself.

Imagine that you have stuck to your plan and truly, deeply succeeded in achieving your goal. Give your body a few minutes to catch up with your mind and allow it to “feel” what you have achieved. Spend a minute or two picturing, feeling and experiencing yourself as having succeeded. Good. Now I’m going to ask some questions. Spend about a minute answering each one as deeply and honestly as you can. Allow your body to feel the truth of your answer.

What other specific areas of your life have been positively affected by this success, and how? Name them and picture how they improved.

Who else in your life is positively impacted by this achievement? How do they see you now?

Who have you become, now that you have done this for yourself?

Take these insights, this new version of yourself, and let this motivate you and help keep your eye on the ball as you love yourself to success in 2012.

ur organs are magnificently designed to carry out all sorts of special functions and we hardly give them a second thought. Along with New Year, we propose a toast to the body’s ability to endlessly renew and rejuvenate itself and give special acknowledgement to the workings of our inner organs.

Now that the party season is coming to an end, a great place to start is with the liver.

The liver is responsible for processing all toxins. When we detox (see our feature on page 6) we give the liver a chance to do its work and filter out chemical residues, indigestible substances, additives, everything you need to live life well

preservatives and environmental waste stored in the body. There are a number of natural supportive supplements that help with liver function. Herbs like Devil’s Claw, Milk Thistle, Dandelion and Burdock root are good liver cleansers and are available in capsules or tea form.

Watching your emotions is another important aspect of paying attention to the internal organs.

Now that Deepak Chopra, and many others, have popularised the concept of how connected the mind is to the body we don’t need to make any excuses about the sometimes ‘strange’ ways of acknowledging this connection.

Controversial yet popular Dr Lu from the Taoist Healing Centre in New York uses a visualisation process on his clients that involves getting in touch with their insides.

Firstly clients are encouraged to take a tour of their internal organs, acknowledging each one and thanking them for their great service and function. Then they are to focus on any hurt, pain or negative emotions lodged in particular organs. Sending loving thoughts to the parts of the body that are diseased, or out of balance, or massaging a model replica, is said to contribute to the necessary healing. Lu believes the body receives healing on a deep level through this process.

You can use your emotions as clues to which organs you need to pay attention to.

People who carry a lot of anger over a long period make themselves more susceptible to disease. We know that nervousness affects the stomach, hence the expression ‘butterflies in my tummy’. Grief when resolved strengthens the system but when repressed it causes the lungs to contract.

Over time, negative feelings, attitudes or emotions that are strongly held onto will solidify themselves into habits and are evidenced in physical muscle structure.

Prolonged grief leads to congestion, it may manifest in the lungs or in somewhere else in the body. Many people with lung or bowel problems have some kind of deep seated grief or sadness.

When you realise how many healing qualities are attributed to Turmeric, you will want to find as many ways as you can to incorporate it into your daily meals.

Studies show even small amounts of turmeric have an effect on health. It contains a component called curcumin that helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells and stops them from spreading. It does this by enhancing the liver function. Villagers in India, who eat a daily dose of turmeric in their curries, have the world's lowest rate of Alzheimers disease. This is not just a co-incidence but has been attributed to turmeric and backed up by studies at a University in Los Angeles.

Besides its use in curries, turmeric is delicious on sautéed apples, steamed cauliflower and green beans and onions. Try it in dip form with yoghurt and dried onions. It can be used in rice or couscous. Dr Weil suggests drinking it as a tea by boiling away four cups of water to one teaspoon of turmeric. Add honey to sweeten.

eeling upset and anxious whether it’s a first day at school, exam jitters, being bullied or a lack of confidence can be controlled with meditation techniques. Teachers who include meditation as part of a daily class routine have reported far less fighting, increased test scores and a class full of children who are noticeably calmer and more rational.

When your child becomes anxious the stress hormone cortisol increases affecting breathing rhythm and heart rate.

Other symptoms like sweaty palms and shaking can be frightening for children to

experience. Emotionally, it becomes more and more difficult to reason effectively and the adrenalin response takes over.

Something seemingly simple may start this off. It could be a self-conscious feeling about how he or she is dressed or because a homework project is unfinished. Little things can escalate into anxiety that seems out of proportion. A worry about wearing the wrong shoes can turn into what therapists call catastrophic thinking. Thinking can start off with: “Everyone is going to laugh at me. No one will sit with me at break,” and escalate into, “I will never have any friends,” and from there, get worse. This happens when the stress response triggers neural

pathways in the brain. Thinking turns into a negative spiral making mountains out of molehills and in no time leading to daily panic attacks or meltdowns.

Although it might be hard to imagine getting your child to sit still and focus, children respond very well to meditation. It doesn’t necessarily have to be done lying or sitting down, it can also be done while walking. The important part is your involvement in guiding them through a routine until they are familiar with it and can do it themselves.

Initially keep it brief. For example, two minutes may be a good starting point for a five year old. You can slowly increase the time. Don’t coerce your child if she isn’t interested, ease her into it slowly, this should be a stress free experience. One idea is to use soft music and spark interest by making a candle lighting ritual and perhaps lying on the floor on pillows with her.

Start off by telling your child you are going on an adventure, but an adventure on the inside. Do some stretching, first tense hands and legs stretching them out and then go limp. Offer a visualization picture they relate to. You might describe them standing on the beach watching waves, hearing seagulls, feeling the warmth of the sun. Get them to hear the waves coming in and going out. Ask them to breath in when the waves come in and breathe out as the waves go out. As long as your child is enjoying this, continue with this rhythm. When ready, take them back out of the meditation by getting them to stretch their arms and legs as you did in the beginning, remembering to breathe consciously. If you repeat this exercise five or six times over a period of days you will have created a link between feeling peaceful and calm and the visual image of the beach. They can use this picture as a resource when anxious. Thinking of the beach picture will automatically bring back the same feeling of peacefulness when in meditation.

Drink more water

This is singly, one of the biggest benefits you can give your body. Drinking water helps flush toxins and promotes better looking skin. About 70 percent of our bodies are made up of water and it is vitally important to keep hydrated. Generally, clear urine can be a good indication of a hydrated body but be aware that certain vitamins and veggies like beetroot can change the colour of urine making it difficult for you to use this as a gauge. A simplest sure way of knowing you are getting enough is to drink at least 2 3 litres a day. Keep a water bottle on your work desk and take it with you on walks.

Set your alarm if you need a reminder but make sure you get your quota.

De-clutter & detox your beauty bag

We often keep cosmetics a lot longer than we should and hold on to way more products than we need. Start by taking a good look through your makeup bag and throwing away anything that smells unpleasant, has changed colour, is crumbling or is past its expiration date. Often makeup does not have a specified shelf life, but old makeup can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. A general rule is to throw away anything that is over a year old, with only a few exceptions (Mascara should be thrown away every 4 months or if it begins to become clumpy or smelly). Next, wash all your makeup applicators and toss out any that are looking worse for wear. Lastly get rid of makeup that does not suit you and give away unopened cosmetics you never plan to use. Once you have cleared out your unwanted and old products, it will be easier to see what you need to replace and what has been cluttering up your beauty bag.

Fight couch potato syndrome and brighten your skin at the same time by exercising at least 3 times a week. Simply skipping those sugar-filled treats and oily foods in favour of fresh fruit, vegetables and dark chocolate will visibly improve your skin.

Not only can excessive sun exposure damage and prematurely age your skin, it can greatly increase your risk of skin cancer. Without a doubt, the best way to protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays is to avoid the sun as much as possible - but since a lot of us like being outdoors, it is super important to remember to be sun safe. Even during the winter months, sun protection should be a part of your everyday skincare routine. Use a daily moisturizer with an SPF on all exposed skin. When outdoors for an extended period, apply a water-resistant sunscreen of at least SPF30 and wear protective clothing.
