publisher's letter Finally Spring is here and after months of covering up our bodies and brooding about the weather and shorter days, we can be excited about getting back to all things natural. But, not having to cover up does mean we all need to look at what we haven’t seen for a few months – that’s why we thought natural beauty was perfect for this issue. Many of us aren’t able to fully celebrate the incredible beauty of who we really are – we shrink in the face of misbeliefs, perceptions and fears. I’m determined to fully engage with a new season filled with new life and possibilities. I hope we inspire you to truly explore and celebrate everything nature has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me how much evidence there is that nature is so good for our physical and mental wellbeing, it’s a fact we often forget or ignore. With Spring bringing the scent of new beginnings, spring cleaning is something most of us itch to do– so if you’re planning on making a few changes in your home, use some of the tips in our Live Well section to bring more nature in. In Love Well, we highlight the importance of fathers – a subject close to my heart. It’s a challenge, but also ultimately an intense honour to be a dad; and being a well balanced dad is something all fathers should strive towards. September is also Alzheimer’s awareness month and we highlight Chad’s journey and determination to spread the word and educate people about this devastating disease. Follow his story as he takes on an extreme physical challenge in honour of his father and others who’ve lost the battle with Alzheimer’s. In our Move Well feature we highlight the art of Tantra and how this practise can deepen the intimacy and joy of your relationship. We also look at ways to enhance your natural beauty and a reminder to check that the products you use are as harmless to the environment and your skin as possible. In our Body Dysmorphia feature we explore the often missed, but highly socially and mentally debilitating condition. If you have a teenager at home whose self image is way below what it could be, read the article for some practical advice.

YOU SAID IT… WE TRIED IT

Yoga Life - De Waterkant Rouxmia Bougas swapped her normal gym session for a yoga class thinking it was going to be all about saying Ohm on the mat. She swanned off to the inner city Yogalife studio at Cape Quarter and realised a thing or two. YogaIife offers a wide range of classes, most of them are done in a room heated up to 40 degrees. You have no idea how amazing it feels. Surprisingly you don’t feel faint and pass out rather you feel nourished and energised. Whether a beginner or pro; there is a class for everyone. From Power Yoga, Bikram, Sculpting, Anna Forest and Vinyasa, you are bound to get hooked in a matter of days, if not after your first class. I loved the Power class, not only does it make you feel completely detoxified, but is an amazing stress reliever.Yoga works on the mind, emotions and body. What's great about Yogalife is its community of yogis that are welcoming and friendly – whether your first class or your hundredth, you will feel at home. The teachers are kind and the crowd a mix of trendy and contemporary Capetonians. Classes can be hard, yes, but you are encouraged to take each pose as your body dictates. I left the class addicted. We believe in safe products for babies, toddlers and families, which is why none of our products are harmful to sensitive skin or the environment.

Meet the two sisters behind this successful brand.

did you know? Beeswax is one of the only raw ingredients absorbed by the nails. This makes it the perfect hand and nail wax.

O

h-lief was born out of a love for nature and the desire to use 100% good 100% natural products that won’t harm the skin or the environment. All the Oh-lief products are made with certified organic ingredients. What started as a need to find natural products for their own use and the use of their children soon turned into a burgeoning business. “I really didn’t want to use chemicals and unknown ingredients on my little one," said Christine, "so I made my own potion for nappy rash. It was so effective; other mothers started asking me to make it for them. Everyone kept on saying we should go into production. We decided to take a stand at a baby show and sold all 100 of our jars in the first day. This gave us the

everything you need to live life well

impetus to start making more. We made them by hand and filled the tubs by hand too. Something we still do today. We want everyone to experience the love of hand made products. Our products use certified food grade rich ingredients, and yes, this does mean you can eat them, although of course they aren’t flavoured as meals.” The two sisters grew up in a household that loved nature. “We always had chickens running around and our mother used home based recipes both for our food and for healing ailments,” said Christine. Oh-lief proudly exhibited at a prestigious show in London for the beauty trade. “The feedback was incredible, people were so amazed that such good quality organic products came out of South Africa,” said Louiza.

Louiza's favourite product is the Green Rooibos Body Oil, something she uses everyday. You can use it all over your body and also as an eye serum. It’s even been featured in British Vogue. I tried it during a visit to their factory and it has the most smoothing beautiful feel – your skin seems to lap it up hungrily.

Oh-Lief Green Rooibos Body Oil 100ml R110

SUPPORTING GREEN

To offset their carbon footprint, Oh-lief have partnered with GreenPop, an urban greening and reforestation initiative, and for every 200 Oh-lief products sold, have pledged to plant a tree. At present we are supporting indigenous trees at the Platbos Grootbos Nature Reserve. “We thought it was a great way to celebrate Oh-lief’s green stand as it is fairly traditional that when a new baby is born, a tree is planted,” says Christine. Oh-lief have chosen to certify their products with the Soil Association as the sisters believe they uphold the most stringent criteria. Many certification bodies require a small percentage of organic ingredients to qualify for certification but the Soil Association insists on 70%. They are much stricter and because they are an NGO there is unlikely to be any bias. The Oh-lief factory is also in the process of being organically certified.

“We go out of our way to source recyclable packaging material where possible, such as HDPE plastic. Look out for the recyclable logo on the packaging.” Clients can bring their empty Oh-lief containers to their blending house at Salt Circle, Woodstock where they will refill them with their favorite product, at R10 discount.

did you know? Conventional skincare products may contain fragrances and preservatives which act as antigens - substances that trigger allergic reaction. Chemicals found in conventional skincare products are absorbed by the skin, reaching the blood vessels and travelling around your baby’s body. The long term effect of exposure to these chemicals may result in serious health and skin problems as the liver and nervous systems can’t handle harsh chemicals. Using synthetic chemical based skin care products adds to the toxic burden we have to deal with. Studies have shown that your skin may come into contact with around 75 000 chemicals in the normal course of life and you absorb up to 60% of any substance applied. By using organic skin care products you can help to decrease the toxic load on your body and on the environment.

Olive Oil: This gentle and easily absorbed oil is nature’s perfect moisturiser. It has a low allergenic potential, so can be used on even the most sensitive skin. Olive oil is a powerful anti-oxidant, heals damaged and irritated skin and even enhances skin elasticity.

Beeswax is an anti-microbial and healing agent that also serves as an antiirritant and antibacterial agent. Other ingredients like grapefruit, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, tea tree, apricot kernel, coconut oil, lemongrass oil, baobab and chamomile are all used in the purest form available. Somewhere in my brain an enormous marble statue now stands, commemorating the day my taste buds were so gracefully bewitched by a dish which, to this day- like a fond memory might bring a tear to your eyes, makes me salivate irresistibly.

The Peace Meal

by Roddy Louther

Roddy Louther reminisces on his travelling exploits to come up with a phenomenal tasting dish which he suggests serving as a meal to make peace with.

T

raveling often allows fleeting experiences of other people’s lives. For any bachelor, a long weekend in Istanbul, is an unforgettable experience. Cafés, restaurants, clubs, and bars entice a nightlife that distracts (if only temporarily) from the enduring history of the magnificent city. If I had to single out three experiences, one of them would be Topkapi Palace – could there possibly be this level of history and ostentatious wealth anywhere else on the planet? When walking around the museum, I felt like Inspector Clouseau’s antagonist, you know the one, the famous jewelry thief, Sir Charles Lytton. The second has to be the steamy Turkish bath. I never knew how dirty I was until a Neanderthal with a moustache like a broom, not so much scrubbed, but skinned me to within a whisker of being white. The third, happened near the Grand Bazaar. When lunchtime came and a decent looking restaurant presented itself, we sat down immediately. I say ‘decent’ because it was next to the Giorgio Armani store. Forgive me for not remembering its Turkish name, but my entre, presented in a small, rectangular dish had alternate layers of sliced beef, aubergines, tomatoes and spinach. In between was either yoghurt or tomato sauce, and the whole dish was herbed with rosemary, thyme, and oregano. Somewhere in my brain an enormous marble statue now stands, commemorating the day my taste buds were so gracefully bewitched by a dish which, to this day- like a fond memory might bring a tear to your eyes, brings a mouthwatering drool to my lips.

10

Ever since, I’ve looked at layered dishes very differently. I can’t take a Lasagna or Moussaka seriously anymore. The culprit? Béchamel sauce. I don’t not like Béchamel sauce, but once you’ve facilitated the coming together of tomato sauce and yoghurt on the dance floor inside the disco of your mouth, there’s no place for flour. The Turks often flavour their yogurt with mint or garlic. But, Greece’s most famous historical chef, Nicholas Tselementes, amongst many other things, abhorred garlic. To me, that’s suspicious! Yet he is widely venerated amongst his countrymen for his fascist-like efforts to cleanse Greek cuisine of the contamination suffered over millennia from interaction with cultures he considered barbaric, like Roman, Turkish and other influences. Curiously, while pursuing his puritan ideals, Tselementes, who was French trained, decided to enrich Greek cuisine with the gloss of distinct Gaulish influences. Thus, Tselementrix along with his new chums, Asterix and Obelix, took on the gastronomic might of the Roman Empire without a single bulb of garlic to threaten anyone. However, I suspect his beef was really with the Turks for the centuries of Ottoman rule the Athenians were forced to endure, and more recently, for their occupation of Northern Cyprus. While walking around Nicosia one blistering summer’s day after a fabulous plate of Afelia, I was suddenly confronted by the heavily fortified wall dividing the Greek from the Turkish side. Later, in a nearby bar frequented by British and NATO soldiers, I chatted to the barman. Granted, I may have machine gunned too many questions about the war with the everything you need to live life well

Turks and the wall. But the owner of the bar, an elderly man with a sturdy walking stick (whom I later learned, was a leader in the Cypriot resistance and was now somewhat demented) became incensed. Believing I was a Turkish spy, started to wave his stick around my eyes with bloody intent. Lingering tastes of Kleftiko, Afelia and Souvlakis from that enchanting, but tragic island are caramelised on my lusty mind. And so are dishes I had while in Athens Roast Kid Goat or Lamb, a Mezze Platter with a strange but deliciously fragrant herb, which resembled a branch of common Wattle, and the salads, oh the salads... Without making light of a historically serious situation, I hope all this demonstrates in a fun way the chill of the air above the stormy waters of the Aegean Sea separating the two countries, despite the similarities they share. Apart from what Tselementes would say, there are many in their food too. The lesson: it’s sometimes better to celebrate our differences with what we have in common. In this spirit I borrowed a little from both cuisines and concocted a dish for when you feel like making up or getting back with someone. So, put on some Barry White, light a few candles, open a bottle of red and celebrate our “Peace Meal.”

GOOD VIBRATIONS Energy and life from nature is woven into the very core of food, the combination of elements from soil, rain and sunshine create living plants suffused in natural intelligence and beauty. Tapping into the wonder of creation and life offers an opportunity for reverence. More than simply getting fuel to go about your day, allow yourself to see it as connecting to the fundamental energy that brings life to everything on the planet. Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian or meat eater, nature offers a vast array of

everything you need to live life well

nutrients to help sustain the physical, mental and spiritual energy needed to sustain life. Food’s intelligence is evident in the differences in each type of food. Each one has a unique combination of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fats, carbohydrates, fibre and sugar. Each food also carries its own vibrational energy. This energy is taken straight from the earths’ electromagnetic field which is already established as offering a considerable array of health benefits, from increasing heart health to assuaging insomnia. It stands to reason that the more a food is processed, the more it’ll lose its natural life force and vibration – which is why raw and organic is well touted as the basis for any healthy diet. Food with high vibrations offers you uplifting, positive energy.

When we eat high-vibrational foods, our energy is high and our life force is strong. We have better focus, emotional balance, and plentiful energy to handle whatever the day brings. – Kathleen Kalil, Wellness coach Nature gives clues to the type of energy carried by food - for example, a potato that grows in the ground will give you a solid, grounding energy, while spinach that grows up and out of the ground, lifting its leaves towards the sunlight gives you uplifting energy. Food with added chemicals or processing loses its vitality and doesn’t give your body as much benefit from eating it.

Tummy troubles – Basil contains eugenol, a compound that can ease pain, nausea, cramping and diarrhoea by killing off bacteria like salmonella and listeria.

High cholesterol – the dietary fibre contained in the pectin of pears (apples also have this) helps flush out bad cholesterol.

Ulcers – Cabbage contains a compound called sulforaphane, which destroys H. Pylori, the bacteria that causes peptic and gastric ulcers, before it even gets to your gut. A cup of cabbage only has 35 calories, has 3g of fibre and provides 75% of your daily Vitamin C requirement.

Haemorrhoids – Just four dried figs can help with creating soft, regular stools that will keep piles at bay. They contain 5% of your daily potassium and 10% of manganese requirements.

Fatigue – If you’re feeling tired, have a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, its high Vitamin C content can help combat oxidative stress caused by free radicals and provide a boost of energy. Vitamin C also plays a key role in metabolising iron, helping your body move oxygen through your bloodstream.

FOOD AS MEDICINE As it’s common to simply grab a snack on the run (usually processed and filled with toxins your body is going to have to work hard to eliminate), it’s also common to pop a pill for every ill. But, as the philosopher Hippocrates said, ‘Let food be thy medicine’ and just because modern times have brought modern solutions, it doesn’t mean nature’s healing has gone away. Here are a few prescriptions from nature that may surprise you. •

Mood lift – A banana provides around 30% of your daily vitamin B6 requirement and this vitamin helps the brain produce serotonin. The quick boost helps alleviate anxiety and stress. Bananas only contain about 105 calories and 14g of healthy sugar. High blood pressure – A handful of raisins contain 1g of fibre and 212mg of potassium, as well as polyphenols, effective for lowering high blood pressure and maintaining heart health. Constipation or gas – Live culture yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria that helps your body digest food like beans and lactose and also aids your body in pushing food through the gastrointestinal tract. Kidney stones – Just eight dried apricot halves can help prevent kidney stones. Their fibre, sodium and potassium content keep minerals from accumulating in your urine, in particular calcium oxalate, which is what constitutes the most common type of kidney stones.

Nausea – A cup of ginger tea can ease pregnancy and motion-induced nausea and has none of the sideeffects of over-the-counter remedies (drowsiness and dry mouth).

Yeast infection – To prevent the itchiness, pain and discharge from Candida infection, include garlic in your meals - it can inhibit the fungus that causes yeast infections.

Heartburn – Sip on well-infused chamomile tea throughout the day to ease digestive spasms, inflammation and gas.

Headache – The humble potato, although high in carbohydrates, increases your serotonin levels and in doing so can ease tension headaches.

AWARENESS

Many religions around the world advocate fasting as a means of creating deeper spirituality and learning discipline and respect. Fasting also helps you to not take food for granted and gives a renewed awareness of eating with purpose. Some religions practice eating plant-based food, others aren’t so prescriptive, but still lead followers into the practise of not eating anything that has caused undue harm or stress to an animal, or the environment. Overindulgence is seen by almost all religions as wrong. Food and spirituality seem to be indelibly linked – nurturing the soul and the body, being grateful for and honouring creation. Adding spiritual energy into your daily food intake doesn’t have to take on deeply religious connotations, it can be merely a matter of attitude. The notion of food being ‘made with love’ is widely stated, most usually as an advertising medium; however, the attitude of the person preparing your food does make an intangible, although large, difference in your experience of the food offering. The concept of sharing and nurturing and loving is part and parcel of the premise of food giving energy and nutrition to your body. Being grateful for the food on your plate also serves to remind you that it really is the stuff of life – saying grace before meal assists in giving you pause to consider the true miracle and joy of being able to fuel your body with nature’s bounty.

With high quality soy protein, low in fat and a good source of fibre, it’s perfectly healthy with all the benefits and none of the guilt. And the best part? You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy it. It contains: soy bean fibre, soy sauce, palm oil, wheat, black pepper, red pepper, spice, sugar, salt and Potassium Sorbate (under 0.2%). METHOD Rinse your salad ingredients well (try the Earthsap Vegtable Wash). Grate the carrots and beetroot. Cut the sundried tomatoes in half - I always use a kitchen scissors to do this. Combining fruitarianism with a bit of fasting may just be the key to living a longer, healthier life.

FRUITARIANISM, FASTING & FADS Fads come and go – some work, some don’t – sure they offer novelty and excitement at first but soon fade back into obscurity.

did you know? Digesting food takes up an enormous amount of energy in the body. The calories you burn simply digesting food take up 5 to 15 percent of your energy. Alcohol and protein use the most.

18

F

ood fads are particularly prevalent. People are always looking for an optimal way of eating, often with the desire to lose weight and we’ve seen countless diets come into fashion and out again. We have travelled through the Atkins diet, the Grapefruit diet, Cabbage soup, South Beach, High Protein, the Cambridge diet and Zone diet amongst many others. Ingredients and recipes do the same. We loved making things like tuna and salmon mousses, finger biscuit puddings, fridge cakes and cottage pies in the 70’s, fondues were in vogue in the 80’s, then sushi came

everything you need to live life well

into fashion in full force. Cupcakes had their heyday in 2011 and right now we are loving things like pomegranate juice, quinoa and green smoothies with organic, raw food and superfoods as major trends. In this article we look at fruitarianism and fasting to see what benefits, pitfalls and cautions come with it.

INTERMITTENT FASTING FAD OR FABULOUS >

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

FRUITARIANISM Any strict fruitarian will tell you it isn’t a fad, but a conscious lifestyle choice. Essie Honiball, author of I live on Fruit is a famous fruitarian who sustained herself on fruit for over twenty years adding seeds, nuts and occasional vegetables. In 1971 she participated in a study by B.J Meyer, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science at the University of Pretoria. The results were referenced in the South African Medical Journal where Meyer documented how lipid profiles and glucose tolerances improved on a specific fruitarian diet. Tests showed Honiball to be in excellent health. Her motivation for starting a fruitarian diet came after a battle with tuberculosis left her depressed and unable to restore her energy levels. After adopting the diet she felt completely transformed with a new outlook on life. Basically, fruitarians only eat raw food that is plant based – nothing is cooked and nothing is killed. Typically, fruitarians eat sweet fruits like oranges, apples, melons, grapes and so on. Some add non-sweet fruit like cucumber, avocados, tomatoes; vegetables; nuts and seeds. They don’t ever eat meat, dairy products, bread, pasta, rice, processed or any cooked food. The basic premise is that the food they choose doesn’t destroy life, it creates and sustains life. Raw produce is still living, even once picked, the exchange of earth’s energy is at its fullest. Re-seeding plant pips recycles that energy back into the earth.

Starting a fruitarian diet should be done with caution, it is highly detoxifying and can bring on nausea and headaches as your body and digestion adjusts but fruitarians claim it is highly energising. Many maintain they sleep fewer hours as their bodies are not doing as much digestive work. Some dieticians believe an exclusive fruitarian diet misses certain essential vitamins and needs supplementation - for example, vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products and is necessary for the production of red blood cells and to prevent anaemia. Other nutrients and minerals important for total health are calcium, iron, zinc, protein and Omega-3 which can be obtained from plant sources, like almonds (but aren’t as well absorbed as Omega-3s from fish). It’s perhaps best to use a fruitarian diet as a temporary detox and weight loss measure – besides the potential nutrient deficiencies; it’s simply not easy to sustain the lifestyle.

FASTING From a religious perspective, fasting is thought to bring you closer to your spiritual power – helping you leave behind the cares and concerns of the world, and putting you on a higher spiritual plane. It’s also a discipline that’s honouring to your higher power or belief system. Aside from the spiritual aspect, fasting is touted as an apparent means to longevity as well as weight loss. Calorie restriction has long been said to increase lifespan. Various natural medicines claim to mimic calorie restriction (such as resveratrol, pterostilbene, quercetin, grape seed polyphenols and black tea extract).

INTERMITTENT FASTING FAD OR FABULOUS? A new ‘fad’ on the block involves intermittent fasting – where you eat restricted amounts of calories (around 600) for 2-3 days of the week, and go back to a normal calorie intake (from 2,000) during the rest of the week. It’s said to improve brain function and even protect against Alzheimer’s. It’s also been shown to dramatically increase levels of human growth hormone (also known as the fitness hormone) essential for good health. Gut bacterial health is also on the list, boosting immunity and energy reserves. It’s certainly an easier way for many people than constant calorie watching. It should be monitored properly though, and certainly isn’t an instant, quick fix. In fact, it’s more of a lifestyle shift than a diet. Beginners are advised to start by skipping breakfast and not eating or drinking anything except water three hours before bed. Restricting eating times to an eight-hour or less time frame each day and avoiding carbohydrates like potatoes, bread and pasta; rather eating eggs, avocadoes, coconut or olive oil and nuts. This helps the body shift from carb burning to fat burning. Interestingly, scientists contend that it's sugar craving, and not hunger that most people use as a cue to eat – intermittent fasting cuts sugar cravings out completely. It takes a while for your body to get used to the lifestyle, but in time, you’ll easily be able to fast for 18 hours without feeling hungry. Perhaps combining some fruitarianism practises with a bit of fasting may just be the key to living a longer, healthier life.

I was stripped bare and had a year filled with therapy, antipsychotic medication and trying to figure out: “why am I here?”

STRIPPED BARE In honour of Alzheimer’s awareness month Chad Meihuizen tells a heart wrenching story of how losing his father to Alzheimer’s has ignited a passion to create awareness around the disease.

did you know? Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and terminal illness with no cure which affects close to one million people in South Africa. It generally affects people 65 years of age and older, and sufferers need full-time care when the disease reaches advanced stages. Added to the emotional trauma for the families of sufferers, there is the high cost of care and drugs to treat the symptoms.

22

M

y journey started on 4 May 2011, the day I buried my father. My parents divorced when I was fourteen and ever since my Dad and I had a strained relationship. When I was a little boy he worked so hard. At times he had two jobs and crazy hours, but always had time for me. I remember how he would pick me up after school and go back to work. Then he’d come home to help me with homework in the evenings and have to work again. After high school, I left for Miami on a modeling contract and spent the next ten years abroad. This meant we hardly ever saw each other. During those ten years, I think I called him once on his birthday. He never called me. I slowly closed my heart to him and we drifted apart completely. I often thought how I would feel, if I lost him one day. I convinced myself I would be fine and everything you need to live life well

truly believed that. What was he adding to my life? Nothing. A few months before he died I heard he wasn’t well. I felt sad for him and his wife and hoped he wasn’t in pain but that was about all. Then one day I was in my car and a Luther Vandross song came on the radio, “Dance With My Father”. Half way through the song I realised I had tears running down my face. My heart was so sore I could hardly breathe. I had to see him. His wife Hazel said he wasn’t doing well and if I could visit him, it would mean the world to him.

When I arrived at his door I was a nervous wreck with no idea what to expect. He had Alzheimer’s. Did that mean he wouldn’t remember me? To my surprise he answered. In a second the hugest smile came over his face and immediately relaxed me. Over the next half hour we spoke about everything. He slipped in and out of conversations, but amazingly, was still aware he had lost track of what he was talking about. He would apologize and ask what we were talking about. After prompting he’d be off passionately talking with a huge smile. I noticed his arms. The skin tone, texture, leanness - they were my arms, exactly the same. We had the same nose, same eyes and same ears. Even our lips were similar. I was looking at myself. In that moment I realised he was just a man, like me, doing the best he could. I reminisced on my childhood memories and all the great things about him. How he coached baseball and was so proud when I made the Western Province team in the same position he held thirty years before. We ended our visit promising to see more of each other. We hugged. Really hugged! With love. I barely made it around the corner, before I broke down and wept. Regret filled every inch of my body and I

promised myself I would be a better son. Less than two weeks later he was admitted to Constantiaberg Hospital. There were complications with his Alzheimer’s medication. I rushed there and remember walking past his room, seeing him, but not recognising him. In less than two weeks he had transformed into a sick old man even I didn’t recognize. When I walked into his hospital room, he turned, looked at me and said, “My boy is here”. I can’t think about this without crying. As I write this two years later, tears are running down my face. My father never recovered. For the next six weeks I was by his side. After the first week he lost consciousness and never opened his eyes again. I watched him suffer, more than any human deserves to suffer. I prayed that I could take on my father’s pain. The final twenty-nine hours was a nightmare. His pain intensified. All I could do was rub his body and whisper to him that I loved him. Did he know I loved him? I repeated it, over and over again. “I love you Dad!” At 1am on 30 April, in my arms, my father slipped away.

was painful and tiring. Somehow though, it allowed me to tap into my pain. It started with the physical pain of my legs aching and my lungs burning then went to my heart and soul, devastated by his loss. I ran every evening for the next two weeks. When I think back two years ago, I wonder how I made it through. I lost my father, my fiancée and my business. I was stripped bare and had a year filled with therapy, antipsychotic medication and trying to figure out: “why am I here?” But this story doesn’t have a sad ending. This is the background to my mission of making people aware of Alzheimer’s. A disease I knew very little about before my father’s passing. I have resolved to take on endurance events around the world to support Alzheimer’s South Africa - a truly wonderful charity that was there for me when I had no one to speak to. The Alzheimer’s Memorial Challenge was created with the help of my dear friend WP van Zyl, and is a non-stop run from Pretoria to Cape Town in tribute to Ivan Meihuizen. Our team is fortunate to be sponsored by the Sports Science Institute and Inner Armour.

prime your

neural pathways

Neurobiologist Frances Rauscher says that listening to music can sharpen spatial skills throughout life. Music that repeats itself in a logical and rhythmical way primes the neural pathways in the brain increasing mathematical ability. Experiments have shown that no other sense can register impulses as minimal as those the ear can register.

There are numerous every day activities that can exercise your brain and help stave off the dreaded memory loss, confusion and mental decline that haunts many elderly people

Get your brain moving It’s well known that an infant’s brain is a veritable sponge – soaking up information every moment of the day.

did you know? Strategic games like chess have been shown to increase learning ability and IQ levels. Studies also show that chess can increase your creative ability, as well as memory.

pparently our brains begin a slow decline at around the age of 30. While 30 years seems like a lot of time in which to learn, given that most people can expect to live another 50 years after that, it does seem a little imbalanced. Even if you’re not too worried about the possibility of dementia, little irritations like forgetting where you put your car keys can make life frustrating. It doesn’t have to stop there though - there’s a lot you can do to increase your brain function and stop it going into decline. In fact, you can keep learning and absorbing knowledge your entire life.

ways 5 you can easily exercise your brain >

bewell

integrative health

READY, AIM, FIRE To get your neurons fired up, exercise is key – and although physical activity is a great brain booster, sedentary exercises also work like reading or writing. A recent study that tested participants’ cognitive ability six years prior to their death and then examined their brains after death showed those who read and wrote had fewer signs of Alzheimer’s than those who didn’t. Reader’s whose brains did show signs of dementia, didn’t actually display any symptoms of it while they were alive.

There are numerous every day activities that can exercise your brain and help stave off the dreaded memory loss, confusion and mental decline that haunts many elderly people.

Here are five ways you can easily exercise your brain:

Talk & play While you may spend most of your time thinking (or think you do), talking to people forces you to focus on their responses and how that may affect your own thoughts, as opposed to just having yourself to agree with. Note that if your conversation merely covers the polite ‘how are you’ type information, it’s not going to tax your brain much – so, engage in deeper conversations that allow your brain to be challenged. This exercises your strategic and logical thought processes. Social interaction is a great way to exercise your brain. And, if you’re still a child at heart, there’s nothing quite like playing a video game to get your strategic juices flowing.

Look out Exercise your visual and spatial abilities by observing and remembering the location of five things when you enter a room. By quickly looking around, identifying and then remembering the items, you’ll be forcing your brain to be more observant of your surroundings and exercise your memory skills.

every day you wouldn’t ordinarily read – for example, if you usually only read the business portion of the newspaper, try reading a sports article for a change. You’ll encounter new words, in context. If you’re jumping from the social pages to a book on philosophy, keep a dictionary nearby so you can more easily integrate new words and phrases into your everyday speech. Practise using these new words in your daily life.

Pay attention Many of the tasks we perform everyday are so routine we do them without thinking. Keep your mind attentive by using a different hand to brush your teeth, work out a riddle or maths problem while you’re driving, or listen to an audio book while you exercise. Do things differently, drive different routes, if you usually dry yourself from top to bottom try it the opposite way, sleep on your partners side of the bed one night, get dressed in a different order.

did you know? It’s now been well established that physical activity increases cognitive ability – not only is exercise good for physical health, it’s also a must for good mental and emotional health. Physical exercise actually helps your brain generate new neurons; a vital foil to the neuron-depleting results of stress. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise has a significant effect on the brain’s structure and increases the brain’s plasticity (learning ability or capacity) – so the anti-ageing effects of exercise on the brain are clear.

Remember that Increase your memory ability by challenging it – learn the lyrics to a new song (not just the chorus), or get dressed in the dark – you’ll be surprised at how much you rely on sight to accomplish things, rather than memory.

TIP LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT. RESEARCHERS CONTEND THAT LEARNING TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT CAN INCREASE YOUR IQ BY AS MUCH AS 7% – IN BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS. APPARENTLY, MUSICIANS’ BRAINS FUNCTION AND DEVELOP DIFFERENTLY IN THE AREAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTROLLING MOTOR SKILLS AND HEARING, STORING INFORMATION AND MEMORY. THIS IN TURN INCREASES YOUR ALERTNESS, EMOTIONAL PERCEPTION AND PLANNING ABILITY

Expand your vocabulary To increase the area of your brain responsible for language, read something www.wellnesswarehouse.com

JUST DO IT

Any activity that encourages you to use your brain can be construed as exercise – but as with physical exercise, you need to keep pushing just a little to up your fitness levels – so, choose something challenging each day, from doing Sudoku or playing a strategic video or board game, to having a friendly debate or reading an academic article on something new to you. Stress is a huge factor in bringing on cognitive decline – so, choose a brain-exercising activity that’s also relaxing, such as having a few friends over for dinner (choose a recipe you haven’t yet mastered) – a Harvard Health study indicated that people with five or more social connections had half the risk of cognitive decline than those who had none.

Ayurveda for you CELEBRATING WOMEN’S NATURAL CYCLES a swim in cold water should be avoided. Cold causes stagnation in the body and exacerbates menstrual problems. Diet before and during the cycle should be easy on the digestive system and foods should be nourishing and warm. Lightly steamed vegetables, well-cooked grains, lots of leafy greens and green herbs like basil, coriander, or parsley are recommended. Spices like fennel, coriander, turmeric, cardamom and saffron are wonderful to enhance digestion and alleviate PMS symptoms. Many women have food cravings during PMS, especially sweets and snacks like ice cream, chocolate and potato chips. Eating complex carbohydrates is probably the best way to ward off those food cravings. They are a good source of fibre, which helps clear excess estrogen from the body. High-carbohydrate foods actually relieve the psychological symptoms of tension, anxiety and mood swings that accompany PMS.

W

omen of the modern world work through the month, no matter what. Double-income families, high costs of living and having to multi-task means modern women have learned to ignore their natural rhythms. A healthy menstrual cycle is essential to a woman’s health and well-being. Most women experience PMS (Pre-menstrual Syndrome) or menstrual irregularities at some point in their lives. Hormone swings dramatically affect the delicate balance of the body leading to complaints associated with PMS and their monthly cycle. The number of complaints is even more likely to increase as women have been exposed to an unprecedented amount of toxic environmental chemicals which, once inside the human body, have the ability to mimic estrogen which creates a series of symptoms and conditions, including infertility, fibroids, cancer, premature aging, PMS and dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Ayurvedic healing for women addresses the need to treat the root cause of feminine disturbances rather than accepting the myth that symptoms of discomfort, pain and emotional swings are normal throughout life. Ayurveda’s medicine chest has many womanfriendly remedies. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) is a special Ayurvedic herb very effective for relieving dysmenorrhea or painful and difficult menstruation. Kumari (Aloe vera) taken a week before the expected date of the period stimulates the uterus and helps prevent all types of menstrual pain and discomfort. Ginger mixed with sugar is effective for menstrual discomfort when the climate is especially cold. Ashoka (Saraca indica), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) are also recommended for those troubled by heavy bleeding.

Good sources of complex carbohydrates include whole grains, potatoes, corn and legumes. Sugar, alcohol and caffeine should absolutely be avoided. Walking, deep breathing, warm baths, massaging the abdomen with warm sesame oil, drinking fennel tea or ginger tea will help alleviate many symptoms. Taking a mild laxative like Triphala for about two days before the scheduled start of menstruation, or eating stewed apples will help with constipation. There is no reason for the monthly cycle to be uncomfortable. A woman's life should be filled with joy and bliss every moment, including during the menstrual cycle. Just taking a few little steps to create balance will have a profound effect on body and mind. When a woman feels healthy and happy, she naturally expresses her beauty, intelligence, authenticity and strength. And wouldn’t you agree that our world can use all the positive shakti, or woman power, we can offer in these times?

Ayurvedic healing for women addresses the need to treat the root cause of feminine disturbances.

Women should never drink any ice-cold beverages before and during menstruation. Even

To sustainably treat signs of ageing we have to communicate with our dermis, and not our epidermis

BEAUTY STARTS WITHIN

Dr Yesheen gives us all the facts why we should pay more attention to the age old adage that ‘beauty comes from within’. By Dr Yesheen

T

he skin is our largest organ acting as a protective barrier against the external world. It continuously regenerates and repairs itself and is filled with all sorts of sensory nerve receptors, moisturising glands and protective hair follicles.

KNOW YOUR SKIN There are two important layers – the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outermost, thinner layer that creates a waterproof barrier against the environment. It contains melanocytes with pigments to protect against ultraviolet radiation. It has Vitamin-D producing cells and immune cells that help fend off toxins and bacteria, in addition to pressuresensing nerve receptors.

did you know? The beauty industry is massive with a worth estimated to be $265 billion worldwide by 2017. An ever-expanding array of products promises miraculous cures and results. But what these companies don’t publicise is that external skin products are far less effective than internal nutritional and lifestyle changes.

36

The much thicker dermal layer lies beneath the epidermis, and has collagen-rich connective tissue that attaches our skin to our body. It also has elastic fibers that provide skin tone. A network of fine blood vessels brings oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to these supportive structures. There are hair follicles, sweat glands and sensory receptors that govern touch and heat.

Sources of free radical production:

The epidermis is a one-cell-thick, base layer of living cells, with three to four overlying layers of ‘dead’ cells in a variety of organisational patterns. These ‘dead’ layers are our main defense against the world, and form a water-proof barrier. The outermost layer falls away, making space for underlying layers to move up. In this way we keep regenerating our skin, and it becomes a totally new organ every 27 days.

• Excessive sun exposure

Most of the signs of ageing - wrinkles, loss of elasticity, thinning and fragility - start in the dermal, and not the epidermal layer where the majority of creams, lotions and balms reach (despite their claims). To sustainably treat signs of ageing we have to communicate with our dermis, and not just our epidermis. The main cause of dermal damage is free radicals that break down the connective tissue that holds our skin tightly onto our bodies. They also destroy the basal cell layer that keeps our epidermis healthy, and corrupt our DNA, causing faster rates of cell death and ageing.

everything you need to live life well

• Smoking - by far the most dangerous producer of free radicals • Environmental toxins and pollution, especially water and air

• Mental and emotional stress • Sleep irregularities • Alcohol and coffee • Inflammatory diets, (those with lots of animal products) • Dietary toxins like preservatives, colourants and synthetic ingredients • Dehydration • Inflammatory diseases Reverse, slow down or stop ageing and dermal damage by stopping excessive free radical production, repairing existing damage, and supporting the body’s regeneration and repair mechanisms. His practice reflects a marriage of the technology and wisdom of western and eastern medical models, and focuses on the underlying contributors towards health imbalances. 10 Anti-Ageing Lifestyle Tips 1. Stop smoking 2. Drink plenty of clean healthy water. 3. Get the right amount of quality, undisturbed sleep, make sure some of the hours are before midnight. 4. Find replacements for detrimental lifestyle habits like coffee, alcohol and an acidic diet high in animal products. 5. Eat anti-oxidant rich plant foods as close to their original form as possible. Aim for a full colour spectrum of vegetables and fruit, from the purples and blues of berries and eggplants to the greens and yellows of sprouts and mangoes.

6. Supplemental anti-oxidants, like Vitamins C and E, Coenzyme Q-10 and alpha lipoic acid, are useful, but no amount of supplementation can overcome the results of an unhealthy lifestyle. 7. Eat enough alkalising plant-based protein, to help your body create the building elements to repair your dermal and epidermal layers. 8. Manage emotional and mental stress with healthy practices: be in nature, meditate, exercise and follow creative pursuits and journaling. 9. Get enough sunshine for Vitamin D production, but not too much to cause free radical production ten minutes, three times a week, sunblock-free is enough.

ESSENTIAL COLLECTION The Essential Collection is a sophisticated botanical skincare range making use of extracts like Rooibos, Baobab, Aloe Ferox Leaf, Sutherlandia, Cucumber and Chamomile. The range has been formulated to improve skin radiance and general well-being.

*available at Kloof Street, Cavendish and online stores

10. Move your body daily. Exercise is essential for lymph flow, and transporting toxins away from your skin and to your liver. It also flushes out toxins through your sweat glands.

How Hoodia Gordonii Compliments Weight Management

The active ingredient identified in Hoodia is a steroidal glycoside that has been called "p57". This molecule “p57” increases hypothalamic ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Increased ATP triggers a message to your brain of satiety and eliminating the need to consume food in order to boost glucose level therefore eliminating the desire to eat.

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair –

Kahlil Gibran

Nature's inside track

There’s a distinctly intangible aspect to how you feel in any particular space and it’s got to do with the harmony between buildings, humans and nature.

did you know? Your body contains a network of fine blood vessels (capillaries) that run underneath your skin – lying on any part of your body for an extended period of time reduces the blood flow through those vessels, depriving your skin of oxygen and nutrients. This deprivation sends signals to your brain to tell you to roll over – so, using a mattress that reduces pressure points in your body will reduce the amount you toss and turn at night.

40

SPACES If you feel uncomfortable in a space, there’s possibly an ergonomic aspect to it. That’s basically the science of how your body fits in a space, from a chair to an entire room. But the way your mind feels in a space goes further than room proportions, symmetry and good design. Humans are not that comfortable being enclosed in boxes, made to look at straight lines and surfaces without being able to see into the distance.

SENSORY INTEGRATION Nature is multi-faceted, engaging your senses with touch, smell, sight and sound. Bringing those elements inside your home will make you more aware of what nature has to offer and bring its healing benefits into sharper focus. Even if you’re fortunate enough to have a gorgeous garden, an abundance of natural light dancing into your home or a view that goes on forever, once you’re inside you’re generally cut off from nature’s beauty. Yet nature offers a plethora of health and wellness benefits, from mood lifting to heart health, so it makes sense to integrate natural elements into your living space. everything you need to live life well

CREATE AN INDOOR GARDEN Most people have a pot plant or two, or perhaps cut flowers every so often, but that’s generally where it ends. It’s now understood in science that if you work in a space that affords a view of greenery, your levels of the stress hormone cortisol are reduced – psychologist Dr David Lewis contends that stressed workers can reduce mental and physical strain by up to 60% by staring at greenery for 15 minutes. Create an indoor garden by grouping pot and hanging plants in at least one room of your home, in a space where natural sunlight is available, but not prolific, for at least part of the day. Three common chemicals found indoors are trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde and plants are capable of removing these toxins from your air – choose a variety of plants and insert a few of the following for optimal air cleansing: peace lilies, spider plants, mother-in-laws tongue and English ivy. CONTINUE ON PAGE 42 >

livewell green living

Tips for indoor plants: •

• •

Good drainage is important; if the leaves go brown at the tips, this is an indication of over-watering. Get the right soil – outside and indoor plants have different soil needs. Plants that don’t flower are easier to grow inside and can take a bit of neglect from time to time if you forget to water them. Keep soil damp but not wet for good plant hydration.

BRING IN A FOREST FLOOR Tiled floors clean well, but they’re not the most natural-feeling (unless you’ve installed natural stone). In Japan, a practise of takefumi (meaning ‘step on bamboo’) is a popular way of bringing a forest experience into the home. Quite simply, mature bamboo shoots are cut in half and laid on the floor. Stand barefoot on the wood and take small steps in the same place for an incredible foot massage and to experience the texture of this life-filled natural material. Another way to experience a forest floor is by filling a floor level planter with ground cover like penny royal. This grows densely and has a beautiful soft and springy feel. Put it near your front door and take off your shoes as you enter. Stand on the ground cover for a few moments and besides the beautiful underfoot feel it releases a lovely aroma. Look at integrating natural materials into your home, specifically on floor surfaces – concrete floors are great conductors of earth’s healing electromagnetic energy and can be covered with natural fibre rugs for added texture and interest. If you do have carpeted areas, go barefoot - keep a shoe rack or box at the entrance to avoid tracking dirt and possible allergens onto the carpet’s pile. If you can, change to an anti-allergen carpet material, especially in sleeping spaces.

HEAR THE SOUND OF WATER Imagine the sounds of nature in a forest setting, those same sounds will bring nature’s peace inside. The subtle sound of running or trickling water is one of them. Running water is known to generate negative ions –these purify the air by attracting dust particles. Running water will also mask any negative ambient noises such as traffic or possibly even noisy neighbours.

42

TIP GET A RECORDING OF THE SOUND OF TWITTERING BIRDS, WAVES BREAKING OR A GENTLE BREEZE THROUGH TREES TO PLAY AS A BACKGROUND SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES – THE SUBTLE SOUNDS WILL CREATE A SENSE OF PEACE

GROW SOMETHING There’s nothing quite so nurturing as being able to use fresh herbs or vegetable straight from your own garden. Even if you only have a small space available in your kitchen or on a balcony, there are many ways to still enjoy your own home-grown produce. Buy organic, heirloom seeds and create a mini herb garden on your kitchen windowsill – you don’t need it to be large because fresh, organic herbs are highly flavoursome. Tub gardening is becoming increasingly popular, using wooden barrels or boxes as planters for vegetables – once again, your yield doesn’t need to feed a nation, just enough for your needs is adequate for planting and you can integrate carrots, tomatoes, beans and lettuce quite easily in one planter – as long as the soil’s depth can accommodate the growth.

FEEL THE BREEZE Fresh air is all important, so even if you live in the city, keep your windows open where possible to ensure good air flow. But, clean air is also key – when you take deep breaths outside in nature, you notice how fresh and invigorating the air feels as it fills your lungs. One of the reasons is the lack of toxins and the higher amount of oxygen produced by plant life. Purify your air with an ioniser, or use a Himalayan crystal salt lamp, which has the same effect by creating healthful negative ions.

Urban gardening can take root in apartment blocks, on window ledges, in kitchens on a balcony or even around a communal parking area. If you live in a block with a green area, rope the residents in and take turns in tending an edible garden.

The Slow Juicer actually juices faster than most typical juicers and expels significantly more juice from the same foods, with much drier pulp. It extracts with a masticating and pressing motion which crushes and presses the food, releasing its deep-seated nutrients and enzymes. It also breaks up more of the phyto-nutrients.

Sexual energy is the most powerful life force - so tapping into it is one of the best ways to bring you to spiritual awareness.

Delicious Desire For many people, the idea of Tantric sex conjures images of sexual marathons and almost acrobatic-type movement. But, it’s far more spiritual and meaningful than that.

F

or most of us, daily activities are done unconsciously and habitually. We eat, drive, cook, work and even converse without really having to think too much about what we’re doing. Sex is no different – often we habitually make love in the same position, for the same amount of time and in the rush of life, we tend to turn sex into a goal orientated activity. Taking the end goal (orgasm) out of the equation allows you to spend more time and thought on the actual journey.

Tantra is the science of transforming ordinary lovers into soul mates. – Osho 48

LETTING GO There’s something incredibly vulnerable about maintaining eye contact while you’re being intimate, even with a partner you’ve known for a long time and feel completely comfortable with. If you do make love with the lights on, chances are you close your eyes most of the time. Being truly vulnerable in front of someone shows that you trust them. Trust builds intimacy and there is strength in the trust that’s built from vulnerability. Within this vulnerability and trust, balance is also an element – a balance of both strength and weakness is necessary to create an opening for deeper intimacy. Celebrating the beauty of your body, no matter what size or shape, is a celebration of life and creation. But society has muddied everything you need to live life well

the waters regarding sex and a blanket repression has been put in place. This is, in part, because of atrocious actions like rape, child molestation and the like. Emerging from the constraints of sexual repression can also bring about an emotional and spiritual freedom, further fuelling your levels of intimacy. Your sexuality is as much a natural part of who you are as the shape of your nose or the colour of your eyes – it’s an integral part of you that should be celebrated, not denied.

THE PLACE OF LOVE Located at the base of your spine, is the start of kundalini energy, likened to a serpent goddess, lying coiled and waiting to be unlocked through, among other things, selfless acts of love. The unlocking of this energy has been described as an expansion of the brain. It is believed that the dormant spirit uses 6% of the brain, while the enlightened spirit makes use of 94% of your brain’s capacity, allowing you to begin a journey of spiritual transformation and joy. While some believe that to achieve true kundalini awakening, you need to completely abstain from sex, others believe that the awakening can happen through a deeply intimate connection with your partner.

Start a journey of tantra with your partner and take note of the following: BE IN THE MOMENT Singer Sting’s announcement to the world that he engaged in 36-hour long tantric sessions may well have put some pressure on people to perform on the same sort of level. But the very premise of Tantra is about being in the space you are in, without consideration of others or of any goal. All thoughts of performance need to be set aside – simply allow yourself to relax and fall into the moment with your partner, and accept what happens next. KEEP SELF IN PERSPECTIVE The fundamental idea in awakening your kundalini is about a selfless act of love. It’s possible that within your practise of Tantra, you may focus too much on it as a means to transcend your own fulfilment or spiritual awareness; so, it’s important to remain conscious of being with your partner without expectation or presumption. ALLOW DESIRE TO FLOURISH Tantra is not a set of rules and actions to be followed, desire has to be present first to fuel the experience and motivate the practise before action can take place. Some knowledge of kundalini and your reasons for the practise are important. Your partner’s knowledge and desire is also important, and this you can share and teach if there’s a disparity. Desire spurs action, and knowledge completes the action correctly.

SURRENDER The goal of Tantric sex isn’t necessarily to achieve an incredible orgasm. It’s about surrendering yourself and allowing the practise to flow into a natural course. Its believed that to achieve a full body orgasm, surrender is necessary as that allows the kundalini energy to wind its way up through your chakras, beginning at the base of the spine, through the genitals, navel, heart, vocal chords, third eye and finally, your brain. START WITH BREATH Tantric foreplay is sitting in a dimly lit room, holding your partner, gazing eye to eye and getting your breathing in sync. It’s a shallow meditation that allows you to become immersed in and enjoy each other. MAKE IT SLOW Many people during intercourse tend to focus on genital sensations – this brings your sexual energy down towards your sexual organs; try instead to focus on the sensation of your kundalini energy rising up through your spine. Go slowly and stop stimulation when you need to so you can avoid getting to the point of no return. The process of kundalini awakening is about the journey – enjoying each and every moment of intimacy, rather than moving toward a goal.

did you know? Tantric advocates believed that sexual energy is the most powerful life force – so tapping into it is one of the best ways to bring you to spiritual awareness. Although there are differing tenets surrounding Tantra, with its roots in various ancient belief systems, the basic premise is about focusing on opening up your energy centres (or chakras) and allowing a flow of energy throughout your body; which leads to physical and mental wellbeing.

EXPLORE TOGETHER

A good journey takes time and needs some planning. The following tips can get you started on yours: Create the space: the intention is to focus on each other, so create a physical space that’s comfortable, playful and relaxed. General ‘romance’ tools work – so once you’ve removed distracting clutter, decorate with candles, flowers and softly comfortable bed linen or cushions. Tap into your senses by filling the space with a sensual scent, like rose, jasmine or ylang-ylang and play music you both enjoy. Breathe in: Conscious breathing is central to all yogic practises. To begin, harmonise your breath – straddle your partner (the yab-yom position) and inhale when they exhale and vice versa. As you exhale, be conscious of energizing your breath and as you inhale, bring their breath down through your entire body – in this way you can share all of yourself with your partner Open your eyes: It’s not easy to be seen by people, even by someone you love, but making love with your eyes open is one of the fundamentals of creating a deep connection. It will be difficult at first, so instead of making it a rule, move toward it as an intention Slow down: Building towards and being conscious of your deepening desire will pique desire in women and help control longevity in men. The longer you take to build your sexual energy, the longer it will last. If your thoughts wander a bit, actively move them back into the moment to be fully present with your partner.

Bathing is an obvious daily ritual, and while your infant may love being able to wriggle limbs, feel your loving touch and delight in splashing about in warm water, toddlers aren’t always that easy to coax into the bath, and hair washing can become the stuff of nightmares for parents.

Keeping up Appearances

Little children are exquisite creatures, their soft skin, bright eyes, and dazzling smiles are irresistable.

did you know? Playground teasing can leave a lasting insecurity amongst children. Being called fatty or labelled as bean pole for having long legs can take insecurities way into adult life. Children need to be affirmed consciously on a daily basis. 52

N

ever are we as naturally beautiful and careless about our looks as when we first emerge into the world. Most little children believe (quite rightly) that the world revolves around them and they are the most important people in their environment. But, as they become more integrated into the world and society, these beautiful thoughts and feelings are often smothered in doubt and self consciousness. Good grooming is something many fashionistas advocate as a must to enhance everything you need to live life well

appearances, and integrating good habits very early on in life will not only keep your children in good physical health, but will also instil confidence in their own natural beauty.

Tips for better bathing >

lovewell

eco mom & baby

A STICKY SITUATION Children are prone to getting dirty – right from when they become mobile and begin exploring their known world on hands and knees. Bathing is an obvious daily ritual, and while your infant may love being able to wriggle limbs, feel your loving touch and delight in splashing about in warm water, toddlers aren’t always that easy to coax into the bath, and hair washing can become the stuff of nightmares for parents. Bathing is often scheduled for the evening after a sometimes long day fraught with the usual life stressors, creating an environment of fun may not seem easy. But, if you can make your child want to bath, the day will invariably end more peacefully than if you have to fight to get them into the tub. Routine is important for children, so is the knowledge they are important to you and deeply loved. Insisting on a bathing routine is just as much about love and boundaries as the need for cleanliness. A song or piece of music can help trigger a routine cue for bath time. Bath toys and games can help keep children occupied. Try making up a washing ritual in the form of a game or song that teaches them to wash their own bodies.

Explain why bathing is important – it’s no good telling a child to do something ‘just because’; a good explanation in line with their level of understanding is entirely convincing. As for hair washing, most children simply hate having their whole head doused in water, so make rinsing easier with a tip jug or get them to lie back in the bath, with just their face sticking out. When they experience the difference in sound levels with their ears submerged, it often becomes a game –tap a beat on the side of the bath for them to experience this. Get it over quickly with a conditioning shampoo and spray on a detangling solution afterwards After bathing, get your child into the habit of moisturising by giving them a mini-massage. They’ll thrive under your loving touch and massage will help with relaxation.

TIP TO REDUCE TANGLING HAIR, SPREAD SHAMPOO ON WITH YOUR FINGERS INSTEAD OF RUBBING INTO A SOAPY FROTH.

Tips for better bathing •

As your child gets older, create a simple diagram showing which parts of the body need special attention (the face, bum and genital area, in between fingers and toes, inside and behind the ears, etc)

Use a soap dispenser so your child learns the right amount of soap, shampoo and conditioner to use – for example, one squirt for hands, one squirt for each underarm, two squirts for shampoo and so on.

Get a non-slip stool to put inside the bath so your child can sit above the water line, which will make it easier to wash toes and legs

Let your child have their own special range of cleaning products (even if you decant generic products into a special bottle), so bathing becomes a special, individual treat for them

THE BRILLIANT SMILE Keep your child engaged and interested in tooth brushing, by having a variety of toothbrushes and toothpaste flavours – that way, they can also exercise their independence by choosing which to use (it’s a basic sales methodology – instead of saying do you want this, you say, which one do you want). Inserting a silly song will also help – change the words to ‘row your boat’ to ‘brush, brush brush your teeth, brush them left to right...’ A good ‘spot the sugar bug’ game can also keep them interested – insist that you can see sugar bugs (or any other such creature) lurking in their molars, behind a front tooth and so on. When it comes to flossing, you can begin when your child is around 2 ½ - they’ll need your help at first, but it’s essential to integrate this into their oral care routine to stave off cavities. By the time they’re off to school, they should be able to handle flossing alone, even if the technique isn’t absolutely perfect. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

SNIP

For some reason, children’s toenails are invariably scruffy – they grow fast and tend to get dirty and snagged. Keeping them trim will keep grime from gathering. Regularly trimmed fingernails also dissuade a nail biting habit and keep bacteria-filled grunge to a minimum.

NOT ODD, INDIVIDUAL

Good grooming goes beyond cleaning behind your ears. While you don’t want to encourage an outrageous obsession with fashion, you do want to instil a sense of pride and care in your child. Allowing creative freedom in what they wear each day can also build confidence – so allow them to choose their daily outfits (be prepared for some strange combinations) and encourage their individuality. However, do ensure scruffy or damaged clothes are left off the menu – let them know they’re too precious to wear odd socks and holey clothes. Building confidence in and love and respect for their own bodies will build a foundation of confidence– so when the first round of competitive living (generally when they first begin school) starts, they’ll have a solid basis from which to launch themselves. Understanding how beautiful their own body is will also generate a respect for other people’s bodies, making them less likely to be judgemental as well. Remember to teach with action and not just words, so if you want your little one to revel in their natural beauty, you need to do the same.

When I became a mother I found endless advice available; from peers, other mother’s, books, websites, support groups and more. Everything from post natal depression, bonding with your baby to what to use for teething or nappy rash was all there for me. There is so much for moms but hardly anything for dads. Gynaecologists’ appointments don’t brief you on how the physical and emotional changes are bound to influence the new parent’s relationship. Not every man adjusts well to his wife’s growing belly or to the sometimes growing panic and rampant hormones leading up to the birth. Fathers don’t always know where they fit in and sometimes go along for the ride without understanding they might be feeling a great sense of loss for their relationship with you. Sometimes they are so overwhelmed and excited by the new baby it overshadows that loss. Real questions aren’t always addressed in Q&A sessions at antenatal classes, especially when they don’t feel comfortable asking them in front of you or the other wives. So where does this leave them? Asking their questions around the braai over a few beers and probably to the wrong person, perhaps to their fathers who never changed a diaper, or their single friends who are convincing them their lives will be over in less than nine months. More than the standard ‘mommy and me’ classes, we should be encouraging our men to talk and realise their insecurities in the road to becoming a father. I recently had the privilege of being part of an event called ‘Dudes to Dads’, which allows men, who are recent fathers or expecting their first baby, to ask their questions to a celebrity and medical panel without their partners being present. Issues like hormones and bonding, to budgeting and balance were addressed. The men walked away with a sense of encouragement they can be an active part of all that’s happening in their partner’s process before the crazy roller coaster parenting journey begins. Finding a social group where fathers concerns are shared and understood is important for the mutual relationship. To find out more about Dudes to Dads, email Kathy on Kathy@mommymatters.co.za

Tooth decay is a leading chronic childhood diseasemore common than asthma- and according to researchers it's almost entirely preventable.

By Lauren Dean

TOUCHING ON TEETH Teething can be a confusing time for parents as it’s often difficult to know if baby is irritable from teething or something else. We look at gentle remedies to ease the symptoms and help baby stay comfortable through the teething period.

B

aby teeth usually start appearing between four and seven months and continue coming through until the age of three. The bottom middle incisors appear first. Most Infant teeth will fall out in the same order they appeared in so you can expect the bottom front incisors to fall out first, followed by the top front teeth.

WATCH OUT FOR SIGNS Early signs of teething include red cheeks, excessive dribbling and drooling; babies will put their hands in their mouths and chew on anything they can to get relief from the pressure of the tooth coming through. While some babies don’t seem bothered by this, others become restless, have disrupted sleeping patterns, trouble feeding or be unwilling to feed and they can develop a low grade fever. Some parents observe high fever, diarrhea and nappy rash during

teething but it is difficult to know whether these are related or possibly caused by a bacterial infection and may require confirmation from a GP.

MAKE IT BETTER There are several natural remedies easily prepared to soothe swollen and irritated gums. Let baby chew a wet wash cloth that’s been cooled in the fridge or give them a cold (but not frozen) teething ring for relief. For babies older than six months, cold fruit and vegetables cut into large pieces like carrots and apples are a great way to introduce solids while also soothing the gums. Amber teething necklaces are a very popular teething remedy. Amber is well known to have anti-inflammatory, calming and digestive properties.

The use of xylitol is said to have beneficial effects on milk teeth, as it blocks the colonisation of harmful bacteria in the mouth and acts as a carrier for calcium to the new teeth, making the enamel more resistant to acidic foods and drinks. Specially formulated toothpastes and gels containing xylitol are available for infants and young children, encouraging healthy dental habits that kids also find fun.

6 TIPS TO SOOTHE TEETHING PAIN •

Placing pressure on the gums can also be effective and by letting baby chew an infant toothbrush, or gently rubbing it along their gums for them offers a counter-pressure to the tooth coming through.

EARLY DENTAL CARE

• •

Once the teeth come through the gum the pain and discomfort should ease, but it is important to take care of the milk teeth by brushing often and moderating foods and drinks (avoid those with lots of sugar or acidity) that will damage them. Refrain from using regular toothpastes as babies will swallow what goes into their mouth. everything you need to live life well

Clove oil diluted with olive oil and rubbed on sore gums has a natural numbing and antiseptic effect. Remember to test on yourself first before rubbing on baby’s gums. A wet, refrigerated wash cloth can offer relief when chewed on. Large, cold, raw fruit and vegetable chunks (babies over six months) also helps. Give them an infant toothbrush, when they chew on it, it will apply pressure on the gum giving them some relief. Make sure they have plenty to drink. Place an amber teething necklace around their necks (amber beads are not meant to be chewed).

In today’s world not only is the practice of initiating boys into manhood almost non-existent, but men largely expect the development of their son’s masculine soul to happen by default.

Being Dad, BEING MAN

By Craig Wilkinson

Direction, learning and mentorship are much needed in the formation of healthy masculinity. Craig Wilkinson, author of Dad, the Power and Beauty of Authentic Fatherhood highlights the need for a revival among men and their perceptions of masculinity.

T

rue fathers and excellent male role models are in short supply and society is feeling the pain. Men are increasingly failing to stand up and embrace their responsibilities. Too often the beautiful gift of masculinity is abused or withheld and now, more than any other time, the world needs to see men return to authentic masculinity and active fathering. In the modern world the definition and perception of masculinity is clouded in confusion and negativity. Men are portrayed as everything from emotionally incompetent layabouts to posers and philanderers. Sadly, much of the negative press is justified. Women are asking “where are all the good men?” Young men are asking “where are the mentors and role models?” Our belief in the value of masculinity has waned and the experience of many women and children with men and fathers confirm this belief. What is the icon of true masculinity? Is it the round-house kick of Chuck Norris; the decaf latte of the urban metrosexual; the pot-bellied, middle aged, suburban man

60

watching sport, sipping beer and yelling advice; or the suave wall-street broker in a pin-striped suit? Does the tough inner city gang member embody masculinity or the outdoor man hiking through the wilderness? The image of masculinity is as varied as the number of people you ask. But true masculinity is powerful and positive. A truly masculine man embraces responsibility and does everything in his power to love, honour, protect and provide for his loved ones. He lives with integrity, motivated by conviction, not comfort or convenience. True masculinity is not determined by how much physical strength a man has but rather the strength of his character. It is not a matter of how much wealth or power a man has but what he does with what he has. A truly masculine man is not one who boasts of many conquests but one who keeps a commitment to one partner. True masculinity is humble. It is unafraid to apologise and admit wrong. It is not about dominance but service; it is virtuous and noble, a beautiful gift to the man who possesses it and to the people he loves.

everything you need to live life well

Something has gone wrong when the perception of a real macho man has qualities opposite to authentic masculinity. Why do so few men get it right and why are great marriages the exception rather than the norm? Why are so many children growing up in homes with absent or abusive fathers? Why are more men not stepping up to the plate and using their strength and masculinity to fight for their loved ones and live virtuous lives driven by noble purpose? One of the main reasons men are getting it wrong on such a large scale is that their own masculinity is wounded. In his book, Wild at Heart (Thomas Nelson) John Eldredge says, “Every boy, in his journey to become a man, takes an arrow in the centre of his heart, in the place of his strength. Because the wound is rarely discussed and even more rarely healed, every man carries a wound. And the wound is nearly always given by his father.” For a boy’s masculine soul to function as it should, three fundamental questions need to be answered by his father as he grows up: ‘who am I, do I matter and do I have what it takes’ solidifying his identity, validity and self-belief. Nothing is more important

lovewell

in a boy’s formative years than having these questions answered by his father. And every father, whether he knows it or not, answers; for good or for harm. By their silence, passive or absent fathers answer with; “you don’t matter, I don’t care”. Abusive fathers may answer by directly attacking their son’s developing, still vulnerable masculine soul. Their message is: “you’re worthless, you don’t count”. When a father fails to answer or answers badly, his son grows up with a wound at the core of his masculine soul. He carries this wound into manhood and it affects everything he does. Wounded men become men that wound, either aggressively through abuse or passively through withdrawal displayed by an unwillingness to commit or take on responsibility. Abusive men wound by using their strength in the wrong way, passive men wound by failing to use their strength. Men whose fathers affirm their questions about identity and validity grow up strong and secure in their manhood. They have no need to prove themselves in inappropriate ways. They are able to offer their strength to a woman and love with respect and loyalty. They are able to live lives of conviction and purpose, not succumbing to the shallow pursuit of image, comfort and macho-ism. Fundamental to the nature of masculinity is that it cannot simply be taught. It needs to be imparted. And this impartation must come from a man or men. It takes masculinity to impart masculinity. Traditionally rites of passage rituals served this purpose. Boys left the comfort of their mother’s embrace to be initiated into the company of men. Rituals involved key elements: forsaking the things of childhood, a test of strength and character, impartation of age old wisdom and finally the acceptance and blessing of men who had themselves walked the journey from boyhood to manhood. Young men emerged with a clear understanding of what it is to be a man. They held themselves with pride, secure in the knowledge that they now walked as a man among men.

constant quest to find identity, validation and prove they have what it takes. Fuel this with popular misconceptions about what a real man is and you have a recipe for disaster and an explanation for almost all the strange behaviour of the male species. Sadly, most men deep down harbour a fear they are not quite adequate as men. Whether in the bar or boardroom, battlefield or bedroom, men fight to prove they are the real deal. What gets lost in the madness is the strength and beauty of the true masculine soul. The liberating truth is you don’t have to play the man to be the man. You are the man, and so much more so, if you don’t have a constant need to prove it. Craig Wilkinson is the founder of Father A Nation (FAN), an NPO which restores and equips men to be great fathers. He believes if we can heal men we can heal the world. He is author of “Dad – The Power and Beauty of Authentic Fatherhood”, and speaks and runs workshops on fatherhood. Natural Beauty Secrets

Everybody has their favourite beauty tricks and tips, from a spot remedy to removing under eye bags or simply to freshen up and feel fabulous.

W

e asked some of our local models to give us their best beauty tips, we collected some from our customers and some from supermodels. It seems everyone is clear on the benefits of drinking lots of water and not going to sleep with make-up on. This is what they came up with. Miranda Kerr uses a dry body brush every day to promote her lymphatic system, improve circulation and keep her skin feeling softer and smoother (it’s also a great cellulite buster). She drinks water and noni juice to stay hydrated, especially when travelling, and swears by yoga to keep her mind and body rejuvenated.

Allessandra Ambrosio drinks coconut water to hydrate her skin. Vanessa Haywood believes strongly that you should never leave the house (rain or shine) without sun block on your face, neck, chest, and arms. Eat for beauty with fresh, raw fruits and veggies – it will keep your complexion young. Never sleep with make-up or sunblock on. It clogs up your pores especially at night time when your skin and body does all its healing.

Veronica Webb uses a home-made face mask made from crushed papaya seeds and sugar-free plain Greek yoghurt to keep her skin consistently radiant.

Tracey McGregor’s first tip is to drink loads of water, it flushes out your system and keeps your body and skin moisturised from the inside out. Her second tip is to make sure you're religious with your skincare regime. Cleanse, tone and moisturise in the morning and the evening and also make sure you apply sun protection. She also believes in a good cleanse before sleep. For make-up tips: Always keep some tinted moisturiser, mascara and lip gloss in your bag, this is a nice ‘quick and easy’ way to freshen up your face without having to go overboard. Use a really good lip conditioner to keep your lips looking great – there’s nothing worse than flaky chapped lips. This also means when you apply lipstick or lip gloss you will look fab!

Esti Ginzburg finds that a capsule of vitamin E opened and rubbed over her lips keeps them hydrated and luscious all day.

Roxy Louw believes in drinking water to flush out impurities and hydrate the skin. Go on a detox at least twice a year for

Lindsey Wixson uses tea tree oil for spots. Carol Alt believes a mostly raw food diet has been a key to regaining her health and keeping her beauty fresh after surviving cancer. She also avoids all dangerous chemicals in cosmetics like parabens and sulphates. Christy Turlington recommends yoga as one of the best tools to make sure you look and feel your absolute best at any age.

Karolina Kirkova adds a few drops of lemon juice in the water she uses to wash her face daily for prolonged radiance.

the same reason. Moisturise well and use sunscreen. Genevieve Morton has a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar everyday. She says the biotin it contains is great for hair and nails, it helps with weight loss, detoxes the body and is great for the skin. Tanya Van Graan is a great fan of exfoliation believing it to be one of the most important ways of achieving great skin, removing dead cells, removing build up and preventing acne. This means your whole body and not just your face. Although sunscreen is important Tanya recommends spending at least ten minutes a day in the sun to get Vitamin D. She believes this is a protective measure against a host of diseases like osteoporosis, heart disease and certain cancers. Sasha Monique O’Hare from our facebook page says she uses coconut oil for everything. Dominique Zara Pole also from facebook agrees: “I also use coconut oil for just about everything. Rosewater and coconut milk makes a really silky bath; honey and pure olive oil makes a good skin moisturiser; honey and brown sugar is a fresh facial and body exfoliator. Egg yolk and lemon juice is an anti-redness facial. When I peel butternut I usually rub the peels on my face too. Not sure if it has any health perks but it feels and smells really good, and besides, having an orange face while cooking is fun.”

If you have a teenager who seems more than a little obsessed with looks, don’t immediately write it off as mere teenager angst

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Everybody has moments of insecurity and we’ve all had days when nothing seems to look right in the mirror. But, with a few make-up tricks or a favourite outfit, most people are able to get through the day just fine. However, there’s a little understood condition that goes beyond just insecurity.

did you know? Body Dysmorphic Disorder is similar to anorexia in that the sufferer sees a distorted image of themselves – every tiny flaw is heightened to the extreme, so much so that it becomes an obsession.

64

B

ody Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is often put down as extreme vanity or depression. While depression is a factor, vanity doesn’t come into it at all; sufferers believe themselves to be extremely ugly or defective.

everything you need to live life well

Tips for managing the disorder >

feel well

thoughts & emotions

Plastic surgery is often believed by the suffer to be the only option – but it’s not a solution at all because once one aspect is fixed, another flaw comes to the fore, with similar obsessive focus – in fact, one study showed that 90% of BDD sufferers who underwent surgery weren’t satisfied with the results. BDD is deemed a psychological disorder and appears in the Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

WHY? But what makes one person merely insecure on some days, while another completely debilitated by a belief there is something hideously wrong with their looks? There’s an element of MTV or media representation of what’s beautiful and what’s not in every teenager’s angst, however, although BDD may be enhanced because of this, it’s not the cause. Science reveals that BDD sufferers process visual information differently – there’s abnormal brain activity when viewing their own images, but normal activity when they view others. So, even comparing themselves to a person similar in looks won’t help them gain a better self impression. There may be a genetic component to BDD, but nurture also plays a part. Excessive teasing about looks or a family that puts too much importance on appearance can play a role in the development of BDD.

ADDRESS THE ISSUE The most common age for diagnoses is 17, although BDD usually begins in late childhood or early adolescence. The first step in addressing the problem is to identify it – so, if you have a teenager who seems more than a little obsessed with looks, don’t immediately write it off as mere teenager angst. Most often anxiety and depression occur with BDD, so this may also be a clue.

even self-mutilation. Regular exercise, a healthy diet and relaxation techniques can help reduce the anxiety brought on by BDD.

Other than therapy, certain lifestyle changes and habits can help with managing the disorder: • Write it down - Journaling is a good way to express pent up emotions • Social interaction - Participating with friends and family will reduce feelings of isolation • Sleep Is vital for maintaining mental health, as is a well balanced diet • Relax - Use proven relaxation techniques such as yoga, taichi or meditation • Manage the disorder by understanding recovery is an ongoing process Thoughts of suicide are common among BDD sufferers, so it’s vital the disorder is taken seriously and interventions effected with urgency.

Although many sufferers are treated with antidepressants, it’s found that therapy, specifically cognitive behaviour therapy is far more effective. CBT helps sufferers recognise irrational thoughts and behaviours by asking questions like, ‘what evidence do you have for this belief’. Ritualistic behaviour also accompanies irrational thoughts, which can lead to obsessive compulsive disorder – such as checking the mirror a specific number of times before going out, applying and reapplying makeup numerous times, and www.wellnesswarehouse.com

SOPHIA'S STORY

There were days when Sophia’s absolute despair at her appearance rendered it impossible for her to even leave the house – something that caused extreme tension in her household, especially when it came to going to school. Despite waking up hours earlier than necessary to prepare for the day, Sophia’s debilitating hatred for her own image meant that no matter how much time she had to get ready, it simply wasn’t enough. Clothes, make-up, special skin treatments, a loving family and even her innate intelligence didn’t seem to help in upping her extremely low self-image. Sophia was fifteen, by all accounts very attractive and had a lot of things going for her – good friends, good academic record and success on the sports field. But, the way she felt about herself meant she missed out on a lot of social events – simply because she couldn’t leave the house looking as she did. Additionally, she couldn’t even face her family at times, hiding in her room unable to even go to the bathroom or get a drink because she feared facing anybody at all. Her particular focus was on her skin. She was experiencing the usual cache of pimples for her age, but she didn’t have what could be diagnosed as acne – so, it wasn’t worse than any of her friends. But to her, the tiniest bump meant she was grotesque and no amount of make-up would make a difference. It was only after a few years of tantrums, huge arguments with her parents, a foray into selfmutilation and a half-hearted suicide attempt that Sophia’s parents understood the severity and reality of the problem; and that it wasn’t just a phase she was going through. Sophia was diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

MAKEOVER

Switch your make up choice to one that is organic and do your skin the biggest favour you ever can. Organic means no harmful chemicals will be absorbed into your bloodstream. After time, a build up of chemicals in the system can make your skin develop resistance; this can make you prone to irritation and allergic reactions. We have chosen Couleur Caramel as our base for a makeover that will have you looking gorgeous in the most natural way. Couleur Caramel is an innovative range of professional organic makeup with a wide range of colours and textures. Follow these 8 easy steps to a natural spring look.

step 1

step 5

Make sure your skin is beautifully clean. Add a pea size dot of Couleur Caramel Makeup Base. Certified organic ingredients of sweet almond oil, sesame oil and shea butter add a boost of moisture while organic Field Horsetail and essential Cassie wax prep the skin for foundation.

Light up your eyes with shadow. Apply your chosen colour to eyelids and give them a touch of shimmer. Couleur Caramel’s Pearly Eyeshadow range is packed with anti-oxidant rich Rooibos tea and Vitamin E, two great skin anti-agers.

step 2

step 6

Smooth on Couleur Caramel Hydracoton Foundation using a foundation brush for a flawless finish. Darker skin tones try Couleur Caramel Bio Mineral Foundation for an even complexion.

Eyeliner is a perfect way to define your eyes and make them look bigger. Decide which look you want and line the top eyelid, the bottom or both. Use a small brush to soften the lines by smudging them carefully. Then use a eyebrow pencil to shape or darken your eyebrows.

step 3 Set it in place with the Couleur Caramel Free Powder. This will give you a matt look and mop up any oily areas. Carry this in your bag during the day and touch up when necessary.

step 4 Smile to find the contour line for your blusher. Using a large blusher brush dot Blush Powder on the apples of your cheeks and blend it in well. Active ingredients of organic grape seed oil, sunflower seed oil, soya and olive oil give cheeks a nourishing touch of colour.

step 7 Apply Couleur Caramel Volumising Mascara for instant definition and volume. Wiggle the wand at the base of your lashes and drag through to the ends for extra length. A water-based formula makes it ideal for sensitive eyes.

step 8 Pretty your pout with Couleur Caramel Moisturising Lipstick. Choose to subtly outline your lips with a lip liner pencil and finish off with an application of Couleur Caramel Gloss for a plump, luminous effect.
