1. NEIGHBOURGOODS MARKET, CAPE TOWN

This popular gathering is a weekly social event for Mother City residents and visitors. If you don’t mind hustle, bustle, and a queue or two, the tasting and sampling opportunities are endless! There’s also great music (often live), and a range of other artisanal goods (think hand-sewn clothing, boutique jewellery, and the like) on offer.

2. PORTER ESTATE MARKET, CAPE TOWN

A great destination for organic fresh produce, cheese, preserves, meats, and more. Make sure you arrive early, as the vendors tend to sell out pretty quickly! Enjoy the fresh air while indulging in some of the best pancakes and fruit smoothies around.

3. STELLENBOSCH FRESH GOODS MARKET, STELLENBOSCH

While some attend this one purely to stop for breakfast and a spot of socialising, there are others who arrive with baskets and bags to fill with everything from fresh vegetables and herbs to freerange chicken, artisanal cheese, smoked sausage, and a houseplant or two.

4. WILD OATS MARKET, SEDGEFIELD

The place to be on a Saturday morning in the Garden Route! Bring the whole family and your appetite - there are plenty of vendors offering everything from hearty farm breakfasts to traditionally-prepared Mexican delicacies.

Over 30 years ago, a couple of farmers huddled around a bakkie to start this organic market. Today, it’s a thriving source of high-quality, handcrafted products, from the freshest local produce to natural cosmetics. Organic pancakes, ice cream, honey, jams, bread, and cakes flank healthier choices like organic teas, grains, and pulses.

6. THE VALLEY MARKET, JOHANNESBURG & PRETORIA

This is a virtual market that sets up shop three times a month. It can be found at the African Swiss Restaurant in Broederstroom on the first Saturday of the month; at Greenlands in Parkhurst on the third Saturday; and at Alte Backstube in Kroondal on the last Saturday of the month. If you’re a fan of delicious, sustainable food fresh from the farm, it’s worth the wait for them to reach your area!

This multi-award-winning market is a favourite amongst local foodies. The variety on offer seems to continue to grow each week. Expect farmfresh fruit and veg, the best muffins in town, freshly-baked breads, jams, and more. The catch? It’s an early one, so best suited for the morning people amongst us!

8. HAZEL FOOD MARKET, PRETORIA

Hazel Food offers a suburban froth of cappuccino and jumping castles, where the whole family can shop, relax, and eat at leisure. Perfect pâtés, pickled peppers, crisp samoosas, organic vegetables, pretty cupcakes and nougat are a few favourites that are always on our shopping list.

Created for foodies by foodies, this vibrant market offers a range of foods exclusively from the KZN region. From pasture-raised meats to fresh produce, baked goods, and dairy delights, it’s perfect for those who are hungry and appreciate all things homegrown.

10. KARKLOOF FARMER’S MARKET, HOWICK

A foodie’s paradise in an old shed, this one features everything for which the Midlands is famous - including fresh fruit, veg, and herbs from nearby farms, a wide range of dairy products, freshly-baked goods, homemade pickles, preserves, and more.
