H E A RT ’ S & M I N D S Eleven years ago, this month we opened the first Wellness Warehouse store in Kloof street in Gardens, Cape Town. We now have 27 stores nationally and we’re still growing. During this time we’ve seen so many trends from ditching carbs and adopting paleo to a substantial vegan conversion and a notable increase in yoga practice. The world is changing at a rapid rate and as we discover more we gravitate towards better ways of being on the planet. Winter’s sensibility is generously filled with cocooning and this issue explores our internal landscape with warming practices for both body and mind. A special focus on the heart brings us heartopening healing caco brew and advice on negotiating a broken heart. Lazy Sunday soup is the perfect broth to combine with our cashew sourdough loaf. We celebrate Tibb, the Greco-Arabic medicine and Professor Bhikha, the man who introduced this system of healing to South Africa. This is the perfect time to do some self examination and find out what temperament you have. Tibb has a wonderful system that offers individuals valuable information based on their tendencies, preferences and body types. All of this helps us align with the best lifestyle practices to enhance health. We also take an in-depth look at the practise of homeopathy and multiple natural approaches to immunity boosting. Bio- hacking has fascinating insight into health and the millenial approach to feeling good. Our getaway feature takes us off to Umhlanga for some warmer weather and our book shelf is filled with great reads to snuggle up to. We’re delighted to give you so much material to help make positive changes in your life and follow the joy of pursuing higher health. In health & wellness,

Zo Brown is a woman of many talents - she is a TV presenter, radio personality, voice-over artist and model and host of the popular early morning ‘Feel Good Breakfast Show’ Expresso on SABC3 and has her own radio show on KFM. Zo was born in Cape Town and raised in Durban. What d oes living li f e well mean to you ? To me, living life well means finding balance between career and personal life satisfaction. Give your career your best, but also find time to connect to the people closest to you. How d o you nurture yourself in the mi dst of your busy schedule ? I spend a lot of time with family and friends during my downtime. This is so important to me. I don’t currently have as much free time as I would like, when I do, I love to be outside – hiking in the mountains, cycling on the prom, visiting the park, browsing markets and attending festivals. This is where I feel most carefree. Daily quiet time is also imperative.

How d o you stay in mental and physical shape? Twice a week I work with a personal trainer. I’ve managed to take my fitness to a new level, and we’re currently focusing on my heart rate and recovery. I also do as many park runs as possible – Green Point, Rondebosch, Century City and Route 44 are my current favourites. Nutrition wise, my challenge is eating breakfast in the morning and drinking enough water. I leave home at 04:15, and try get in a healthy breakfast while I’m in the makeup chair early morning. I do have a sweet tooth and indulge from time to time as this helps stave off cravings. My mom frequently stocks my freezer, which is always a game changer!

eatless, marvelous and more-ish this immune boosting winter soup makes a fabulous lazy-day filler packed with nutrient dense ingredients. It’s also easy on the wallet. Eat it with sprouted Essene bread or toasted sourdough. Both these bread options have only trace amounts of gluten, an ideal choice to support better gut health and overall digestion. Alternatively for an umami twist add some organic cooked wild rice into the soup before serving.
K ate ’ s 3 top tips f or optimising immunity : 1 . S wap cooler f oo d s like sala d s , f or warm wholesome meals . Warm, cooked foods are gentle on the body and easy on the digestion. Giving your digestion a well-needed break frees the body to spend energy on important functions like fighting off infections and repairing worn out tissues and muscle. Eating in accordance with the seasons is important and winter is the perfect time to eat healthy slow cooked foods. 2 . S ip on a d aptogenic tea blen d s . Adaptogens support the body by helping the body deal with daily stresses, bringing it back into balance and promoting health and wellness. My favourite adaptogenic blend is African Forest Medicinals’ Superhero Immune Boosting Tea Mix. It’s local and wild harvested, and includes 4 different types of medicinal mushrooms, carefully blended with a deliciously sweet mixture of goji berries, licorice root and vanilla pods.

3 . S leep your way to better per f ormance an d your healthiest sel f . Sleep is hands-down the most underestimated nutrient. Good quality sleep is, among other things, antiinflammatory and literally hits the ‘restore’ button helping your body reboot and re-energise. Practicing good sleep hygiene means getting 7-9 hours of deep sleep each night by sticking to a regular routine so your body finds its appropriate sleep-wake cycle; shutting down and removing all electronics from the bedroom well before bed time and minimising or eliminating light exposure. Winter is a time for slowing down and ‘hibernating’. Indulge in self-care and allow your body and mind some down time.
RECIPE Makes 4 hearty portions I ngre d ients *50ml olive oil *1 large onion *1-2 cloves of garlic *1-2 sprigs of fresh thyme *2 large carrots coarsely grated *250ml red lentils *1.5 litres of your stock of choice *125ml chopped parsley *1 bay leaf *500ml shredded cabbage *15ml tomato paste *5ml Himalayan salt *5ml of coconut sugar *1 tsp of Worcester sauce *1 tsp of fresh pesto Use organic ingredients where possible METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the chopped onion, garlic, thyme and carrots. 2. Stir- fry for a few minutes and then add the remaining ingredients. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stir once or twice. 3. To enhance the flavor profile, allow to cool and then reheat before serving. Remove the bay leaf and adjust seasoning as desired. 4. Serve with a teaspoon of fresh pesto stirred into each portion. T I P : Before serving add a sprinkling of activated yeast, a handful of sunflower shoots, a few sultanas or chopped chives.

Try a brisk walk or the yoga sequence, Sun Salutation, repeated a few times, which is great for creating warmth and keeping the body and heart in shape. Your strength and stamina will improve daily and you’ll be ready to welcome the spring sunshine with open arms.
WE HAVE A FEW SUPERFOODS WHICH HAVE HEART-SUPPORTING MINERALS AND NUTRIENTS TO KEEP IT STRONG AND FEELING IN LOVE.
CHAGA
Known as the King of the Medicinal Mushrooms. • A powerful immune system booster protecting the heart from disease and stress. • Decalcifies the pineal gland. The part of the brain that helps you to feel connected to your inner world, and the world around you.
• Contains melanin providing skin protection from sun damage and keeps it looking young.
• One of the highest food sources of antioxidants in the world which promotes anti-aging & has been known to help soothe inflammatory bowel conditions.
• Contains Betulinic acid which is shown to have an anti-tumour effect.
Chaga releases all its goodness when it is boiled, so make a tea that you can cool down and use in smoothies, or drink as a warm beverage. It tastes nothing like the mushrooms you already know, in fact, there’s even a hint of vanilla! We also love adding it to any hot meals - see the next page for a heart-warming, mushroom soup.
HEMP SEEDS
Also called hemp hearts, they are considered a nutritionally complete food. • Contains the perfect ratio of essential omega oils which moisturise the skin from inside out and nourishing for the brain and joints.
• An excellent way to alkalise the body.
• The only plant found to contain Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which improves hormone health and is anti-inflammatory. Hemp seeds & oil are easily incorporated into salads, quinoa and most other savoury meals. The seeds are a creamy addition to smoothies and create a luxurious texture - try them in your next green smoothie!
CACAO BUTTER
Fat pressed from the cacao bean. One of the healthy fats good for lowering LDL cholesterol & excellent as a nourishing moisturiser. • Lowers LDL cholesterol providing heart support.
• Very high in antioxidants, cacao butter helps transform free radicals, prevent disease and slows aging.
• Considered a healthy fat, it helps the magnesium and good brain chemicals cross the brain blood barrier so you get the most from your cacao. Cacao butter is used to make raw chocolates, is added to hot drinks for that extra deliciousness and is so good on warm oats! You can rub it on your skin as a nourishing body oil and even moisturise your lips this winter.
CHAGA
POTENT ANTIOXIDANT SUPER MUSHROOM In the pristine Siberian Forest of Russia chaga grows on silver birch trees resulting in a mushroom with super powers. Well, almost. Because of the relationship between the tree and the mushroom, and because of the harsh elements it must endure, chaga develops immune boosting qualities that are almost unparalleled. There are a couple of ways to get this superfood into your daily diet. Firstly, to break down the chitin and release all the goodness, this mushroom must be heated, preferably boiled. To do this you can simply boil it in a pot on the stove, strain the tea and keep the mushroom matter for the next brew - it can be reused repeatedly until the brew grows weak and then you can throw the matter into your smoothie! No waste! You can let the tea cool and use it as a base in your smoothies. You can also put some of the hot tea in a mug, add a tsp of cacao powder, a tsp of mesquite, coconut oil and sweetener of your choice. Stir it up, and sip on true taste paired with nutrition. Another way to use it is to add it to your hot meals! Adding it to soups and stews is a fantastic way to heat and eat this mushroom. Just as a side note, chaga doesn’t taste at all like you’d think a mushroom should. The flavour is unique and unimposing on other flavours.
WARMING MUSHROOM SOUP BIOHACK YOUR SOUP with this warming chaga mushroom SUPER soup and creamy hemp lemon sauce straight from Werner & Chantal Daniel’s kitchen. This soup is packed with all the goodness of chaga and the added benefits of hemp seeds. Soup upgrade, done!

aving undisputedly confirmed that refined carbs are not an option in a healthy diet, we go in search of a healthy bread alternative and find a delicious option in a grain free sourdough loaf. Sourdough bread is traditionally made from a starter of wild yeast and bacteria – it’s an ancient art that’s been done for centuries and improves the digestibility and texture of whole grain products. The wild yeast starter and bacteria influences the taste of the bread and has a higher proportion of beneficial bacteria – lactobacillus – which means higher lactic acid (less phytic acid) making it easier for your body to absorb minerals like potassium, magnesium and zinc. Many people who find that standard loaves make them bloated, notice that sourdough is more harmonious in their system. That’s because the bacteria/yeast combo predigests the starches in the grains. Preparing sourdough is a process that requires soaking the grains for some time, and frequent rinsing which breaks down the protein gluten into amino acids and can even make it palatable for gluten sensitive people. When shopping for sourdough, make sure it was made with the time-considered traditional recipe. Alternatively make a loaf at home. We tried a grain free cashew option using probiotic capsules as the starter.
RECIPE GRAIN FREE CASHEW ‘SOURDOUGH’ BREAD Makes 1 loaf I ngre d ients *300 grams (about 2 cups) raw cashew pieces *½ cup filtered or spring water *Probiotic capsules (use enough to equal about 30-40 billion strains) *2 large eggs, separated *1 TBSP filtered water *½ tsp baking soda * tsp Himalayan salt *1 egg yolk + 1 teaspoon water for egg wash *Your probiotic will ferment the batter. As each brand uses different amounts of strains per capsule you will need to check the packaging to see how many you require. METHOD Make sure you have a baking pan that’s about 20cm x 10cm. 1. Make the ‘sourdough’ starter by processing the cashews and filtered water until well blended and smooth. Stir regularly and keep going – it might take some time. 2. Put the mixture in a glass or ceramic bowl (it must be a non-reactive bowl), add the probiotic powder and combine well until you have a thick homogenous mixture. 3. Cover the bowl with a plate and put it into the middle of your oven. Turn the oven to 50 degrees Celsius (not less than that). Leave for 12 hours minimum and not more than 20 hours. The temperature is important - too high and it will kill the living bacteria, too low and it won’t activate. 4. When the culture is ready, preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Grease or line your baking pan. 5. Separate the egg yolks from the whites, add a tablespoon of water to the yolks and mix together. Transfer your cashew mixture into a large mixing bowl using a spatula and add the yolks. Blend them together until the mixture is lump free and smooth then stir the salt and baking baking soda into the cashew mixture. 6. With clean and dry beaters, whip the egg whites until stiff. Make sure the peaks are gentle and not too well beaten. Gently fold them into the batter till the egg whites are no longer visible. 7. Scrape the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Your pan should be about three quarters full. Before baking, brush the loaf with the egg yolk and water mixture to give it a crusty finish. Be gentle. 8. Bake at 170 degrees Celsius for 50 minutes to an hour. You’ll know it’s ready when you tap the top and it sounds hollow. You may want to up the temperature to 190 degrees and bake for 10 more minutes so you get a golden crust. 9. Your bread may crack, this is normal. When done, leave to cool for 15 minutes before slicing. This bread actually tastes better the next day.

BIOHACKING by Kirsten Alexander
Take your life into your own hands by throwing the rule book away and experimenting with nature on your own terms.
"A curiosity around changing our chemistry and physiology to become smarter, faster, better sees bio-hacking exploration in a multitude of areas. These might range from DIY biology, to implant and wearable technology, genetic engineering, to light therapy, dietary changes and even gratitude – there’s no holds barred in the pursuit of better feeling and better performance."
M
illennials around the world are rebelling in the healthiest way. Each generation in time has rejected the way of the elder and tried to forge a new way of thinking, being and doing. The world has seen immense change because of this. Revolutions have played out, sit-ins, protests, marches and general cries of ‘no’ have rung out across the ages. Biohacking can be likened to a revolution – it’s about taking control of your own health and wellness by experimenting with nature and using those results to understand what’s best for you. Natural health and wellness has never advocated the ‘one-size-fits-all’ dictum. It also never looks at symptoms alone. As Newton so adroitly put it, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Nothing happens in isolation and because each human being is exquisitely unique, these reactions are different for everyone. Of course, there are similarities – the process of an illness like chicken pox has a structure. But within that structure is also a unique other structure where the virus behaves exclusively to the person infected. S L OW A N D ST E A DY Biohacking is deeply based in scientific method, which can be broken down into six steps: make observations; formulate a hypothesis; design and conduct an experiment to test the hypothesis; evaluate the results of the experiment; accept or reject the hypothesis; if necessary, create and test a new hypothesis. 1
28 \\ www. wellnesswarehouse . com
Here’s an example of using that method for biohacking. 1. Observation – At the end of each day I am exhausted and can’t concentrate 2. Hypothesis – Lack of hydration causes my exhaustion 3. Experiment – Increase water intake throughout the day by 500ml every day for 10 days 4. Evaluate – Assess the level of exhaustion at the end of each day in comparison with the first day. Track the impact and mindfully observe the changes taking place in your energy levels. 5. Accept/reject – Proper hydration makes a big difference in energy levels, however there may be something also that could also make a difference. 6. New Hypothesis – Drinking all the water necessary to stay hydrated makes me full, so I tend to eat less. I may need to skip one measure of water and replace it with a nutrient-rich snack. An elimination diet works on a similar hypothesis, but first begins by eliminating all possible culprits from the diet and slowly reintroducing them.2 It’s not a quick solve, but today’s revolutionary generation don’t need quick – they need precise and true. That’s a basic, individual experiment, which doesn’t have to be governed by any regulatory organisation. You’re free to do what you want with your own body. Biohacking that experiments on other things has been around since the late 1980’s, with ‘garage labs’ popping up around the world where amateur biologists and scientists study and experiment on anything from plant DNA to art. 3
W H O LE W ELLN E S S Biohacking addresses all aspects of life. Questions such as how to be more efficient at work can also be explored and answered using the basics of scientific methodology. As everything is interconnected, the direction in which you sleep could be explored to discover if it has an impact on your waking energy levels, for example. Your waking energy levels could have an influence on your efficiency during the day. The time you fall asleep and what you do in the hours before going to bed will also affect the next day. You could even look at what you wear and how it affects your moods, the way people respond to or behave towards you, as well as whether comfort or style is the most important aspect to keeping you energised or feeling well. With the internet, people have more access to information now than at any time during the history of the world. The problem lies in who to believe. And that’s where experimentation comes into play. No self-respecting biohacker believes anything they hear until it’s been thoroughly tested. Information found can help to form an initial hypothesis, a base from which to begin. S OUL ST UFF To address the balance between using your analytical, rational mind and your intuitive one, biohackers also tap in to intuition over and above the scientific method. Einstein says, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and has forgotten the gift.” Throughout the world and the ages, people have been intricately involved in spiritual biohacking – from

prayer and meditation to chanting and psychedelic ceremonies, these practices all offer up an altered state that taps in to the intuitive space. Whether you choose to meditate or pray, and in whichever way you choose to do it, it is a vital part in getting to the root of yourself and understanding your needs and desire, which is what biohacking is all about. A simple exercise to practise each day is: 1. Observe – Sit quietly with your eyes closed, take a step back from your mind and watch your thoughts. Don’t pursue any thoughts, and don’t judge them. Just allow them to flow. 2. Listen – Hear the silence around you – if there is noise, focus on the silence in-between the noise. 3. Breath – inhale deeply into your belly and slowly exhale. Focus on the sensation of your breath filling and then emptying. Allowing yourself to breathe and just be for a few moments each day enables you to open up to the answers your body, mind and soul already have. There’s a distinct wisdom in each person and everyone is intricately connected to nature, so when you observe and listen, you begin to gain a greater understanding of what will work for you at any given time, to increase your health, physical ability, mental acuity and general wellness. L I ST E N Join the revolution by really getting to know yourself. Learn from other’s experiments and undertake your own as well. Spend time observing what your body and mind are telling you, whether its fatigue or an abundance of energy, bloating after a meal or dry patches on your skin. Be a learner – ask questions about your health and wellness and then set about finding the answers.

HEALING TINNITUS The ringing, buzzing or whooshing sounds you hear aren’t merely about your ears – there are numerous causes of this condition
30 \\ www. wellnesswarehouse . com
Even if you did listen to your parents about not playing your favourite music full blast through your headphones, you could still experience tinnitus. In fact, it’s a highly common condition that can be temporary or last a lifetime. While exposure to loud noises is a known cause, there are numerous others, from head injuries and age, to bone disorders and medication. W H AT It’s a complicated condition because of the numerous possible causes. The most common type of tinnitus is called subjective, which relates to sounds that only you can hear. Subjective tinnitus can be caused by problems in your inner, outer or middle ear, as well as the auditory nerves or the part of your brain that interprets nerve signals as sounds. The sounds you hear can increase in volume when you’re stressed, tired or during exercise. Tinnitus can also make it difficult to hear properly, especially in noisy places like restaurants or parties. Objective tinnitus on the other hand can be heard by a practitioner during an examination of the ear – this is very rare and relates to either a blood vessel problem, muscle contractions or a middle ear bone condition. WHY With tinnitus there’s a what and a why. The ‘why’ is more complicated than the what. Here are some reasons you could be experiencing tinnitus. *Age-related hearing loss that results in tinnitus is called presbycusis. *Exposure to loud noise can cause temporary tinnitus, but if you’re exposed over a period of time, it could become permanent. *Earwax blockage causes irritation to the ear and can cause tinnitus. *Ear bone changes – otosclerosis is the stiffening of your middle ear bones. *Meniere’s disease causes abnormal inner ear fluid pressure. *Head injuries or neck injuries can affect the inner ear, brain function linked to hearing or the hearing nerves – usually only in one ear. *Acoustic neuroma is a non-cancerous tumour on the cranial nerve running from your brain to your inner ear, affecting hearing and balance. *Atherosclerosis causes major blood vessels to lose their elasticity and blood flow becomes more forceful, so you can actually hear every heartbeat. *There are also numerous medications that are ototoxic and can cause tinnitus, such as antibiotics, cancer medications, diuretics, malaria medication, some antidepressants and aspirin if taken in very high doses.

HELP Understanding the cause is obviously the first point in understanding how to treat it – there certainly isn’t a quick fix. There are some natural interventions that can ease or stop the symptoms. We’ve listed a few: *Acupuncture has an excellent success rate in healing tinnitus and because it addresses the whole person, acupuncture can explore and understand the root cause of your tinnitus.1 *Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is also an effective treatment – it assists in reducing stress and helps to re-train your brain to lessen the impact of the noises you’re hearing.2 *There are numerous different homeopathic treatments for tinnitus, depending on what the predominant sound is – buzzing, roaring, ringing, etc.3 For example, Kali carb helps with roaring noises with itchy ears; Salicylicum acidum for loud roaring; and Coffea cruda for buzzing in the back of the head. 4 *Ginkgo biloba plays a key role in improving blood circulation and this improves the functioning of the ear, reducing ringing.5 *Garlic reduces inflammation and improves blood circulation.6 *Ginger helps improve blood circulation, helps get rid of pathogens and fights free radicals. It also has aspirin-like properties for pain reduction.7 *Melatonin has also been found to help reduce the sounds of tinnitus, as has vitamin B12.8 *Antioxidants like vitamin C have a positive effect on tinnitus as well.9 *On an emotional level it may be helpful to ask, ‘is there something I don’t want to hear?’ or ‘Am I blocking messages from within?’
M ELT AWAY E A R WA X To keep your ear ways clear of wax build, gently melt it away using mustard oil. This naturally causes capillary dilation, increases circulation and has antifungal and antibacterial properties. *Simply warm two tablespoons of mustard oil on the stove top. Ensure it’s not too hot and put a few drops into your ear. Allow the oil to sit for 10 minutes and then tilt your head so the oil drains out. Repeat daily for a few days. If you are experiencing tinnitus, especially long-term, you don’t have to live with the symptoms forever. There are natural ways to deal with the problem and seeing a wellness practitioner will help you understand the root cause, how to prevent it happening in the future and how to ease the symptoms.

LIBERATE YOUR LIFE
T
he dictionary definition of freedom is ‘the power or right to act, speak or think as you want’. Freedom has different meanings for different people and even though we can define it in a dictionary, what it looks like to you is unique to who you are and what your circumstance is.
Viktor Frankl, a neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor explored and founded the concept of existential analysis, coined as Logotherapy. In his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl says that the only way in which anyone can truly be free is to find meaning in all forms of existence, no matter the circumstance. His work is extensive and inspirational, especially given the circumstances in which he wrote the book. 1 Psychology lecturer Steve Taylor says that purpose is one of the defining characteristics of human beings; and that growth is an intrinsic part of human nature. When we feel a sense of purpose, he says, we are manifesting the creative urge of evolution, becoming its expression. 2 But this is not an article about existential crises or finding your purpose. It’s about identifying what’s blocking you from feeling free.
34 \\ www. wellnesswarehouse . com
F I N D YO UR BL O C KAGE S Aside from being physically imprisoned, there are numerous ways in which you can feel constrained or trapped. Very often, situations that make you feel that way are not completely out of your own control. As the Sufi poet, Rumi says, “The prison door is wide open already. So, why do you remain inside?” The first place to start is within. Strictures we put on ourselves are sometimes the most powerful and take the most energy to break free from. Thought patterns and beliefs dictate behaviour and if a behaviour is repeated often enough it becomes a habit – and can end up being affirmed from your environment. If the initial thought is ‘I’m not good enough’, for example, the behaviour that stems from it creates responses from the world around you to confirm that thought. In order to feel free, the first question should be ‘what is holding me back from being free?’ With the plethora of information available in today’s world and with millions of people putting their lives on show digitally through social platforms, it’s difficult not to compare yourself to your contemporaries. Most often, we don’t quite match up to our own
expectations and even if we understand that everyone puts their best foot forward in social settings, we still don’t absorb that everyone is also struggling, behind the scenes. There’s a saying in Mayan culture, Lak’ech Ala K’in, which means, ‘I am another yourself’.3 We’re all the same essentially, we just manifest our sameness in different ways. Hayden Planetarium Director Dr Neil DeGrase Tyson says, “We are all connected; to each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe, atomically.” 4 Understanding that everyone is essentially striving for the same thing is the first step in realising you are not alone and your obstacles to freedom are not impossible to navigate. GE T RE AL Consider what it is that’s making you feel trapped. Is there too much admin in your life, a demanding partner, a job that you never seem to get on top of, a health issue? Within that space, consider what it would feel like to be free of it. Be careful of settling on an idealistic version. The world isn’t ideal and will probably never be. We get caught in a trap of striving for the ideal
Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. Don’t let the tamed one’s tell you how to live. in everything from the way we look and relationships to work and health. Sometimes releasing these ideals is what brings the feeling of freedom. Consider that creation is also destructive – think of the cocoon that is destroyed as a butterfly emerges. As you realistically visualise what freedom looks like, also visualise what must fall away in your life to create the space for the freedom you desire. That’s not to say if you are feeling trapped in a relationship that your partner is the one who must fall away – you may need to look at ways in which you can feel free within the circumstance – Viktor Frankl once again teaches us that freedom is within us. BR EA K O UT Useful exercises can assist you in finding what’s blocking your way. This can apply to anything from too much clutter in your home to reinventing your career. 1. What does freedom look like? Draw a picture, gather images and write words on a piece of paper that will reflect that freedom. Create a mood board and put it somewhere you can see it every day. 2. What is in the way? If it’s a career change, do you need to study further? If it’s too much clutter, consider why you’re holding on to the things cluttering your life. If you are in a bad relationship, what are the obstacles to improving it or leaving? identify why it is bad. Write down your answers and ask more questions about the specific issue. This will give you clarity in places we tend not to want to look at. 3. Set a daily goal to overcoming the obstacles. See each obstacle as something to solve. Look at it from as many angles as possible. Whether its
removing two unused items a day from your space or setting aside a certain amount of money each month to pay for an upskilling course. It could even be a 10 minute walk that will build up to become a marathon. A sense of purpose is a fundamental human need – set yourself realistic and achievable task points that move you forward. Create a timeline and be kind but firm with yourself. If today’s goal wasn’t achieved, re-set the day rather than abandoning the purpose. 4. Meditate daily on your picture of freedom. Fully immerse yourself in what it feels like, looks like and sounds like. Create a mantra for your meditation that overrides feelings of not being good enough, strong enough or deserving enough. Here are some examples you can use: *I set myself free by being aware of my thoughts and actions. *My thoughts and beliefs create my life. *I give myself permission to try new things. *I choose thoughts and beliefs that serve me. *I believe I am worthy of living my dreams. 5. Celebrate all your achievements. Don’t wait until the final piece of the puzzle is placed – celebrate along the way so you can enjoy and recognise the path to freedom. Each daily goal is a major achievement. As you move towards finding freedom, you’ll realise the obstacles holding you back fade into the distance and you may begin to doubt whether they were even there in the first place. The wisdom, strength and vision you need are all within you. You already have the answers, it’s just a matter of being purposeful and passionate about finding and actioning them.

N AV I G AT I N G HEA R T B R EA K by Kirsten Alexander
All humans desire to love and be loved, so when a love bond is broken, it often carries immense pain and can have devastating effects on the body and psyche. Navigating heartbreak can be made easier with some sound advice and understanding.
d i d you know ? Sceletium is a natural plant derivative that has similar qualities to a group of modern drugs called SSRIs, which act on the brain to relieve depression and anxiety. It has also been known to ease the pain of heartache.
36 \\ www. wellnesswarehouse . com
M
any teachings emphasise the importance of selflove; this isn’t a selfish concept, it’s an important one – allowing you to remain strong in yourself even if other objects of your love leave or no longer return your love. Of course, feeling rejected can impact your self-esteem causing you to question yourself and your intrinsic worth. Biological actions occur when you feel rejected in this manner, but there are ways of moving through the experience with a bigger sense of self and a larger capacity for love.
HEARTBREAK The area in your brain that indicates physical pain, like spilling hot coffee on your hand, also lights up when you’re heartbroken. So using words like hurt and pain aren’t far off when describing feelings because they correlate to your body as well. Cortisol is a hormone that helps maintain steady blood sugar levels and provides energy to your brain and neuromuscular system. It’s also known as the stress hormone and excessive or long-term cortisol secretion has a negative effect on your body. A break up, or rejection, can flood your body with this hormone. While it’s great in ‘fight or flight’ situations, too much is debilitating. To give you the required strength to react to stress, cortisol moves more blood into your muscles causing them to swell. This can cause a stiff neck, headaches and tightening in the chest. Cortisol also diverts blood away from the digestive system and this can cause stomach cramps, diarrhoea or loss of appetite. On-going cortisol production supresses immunity, making you vulnerable to catching bugs or giving in to symptoms of existing conditions. The flow of cortisol may also interfere with healthy sleep patterns and can impact your capacity to make good decisions. A DD I C T E D T O L O V E Numerous studies have explored whether or not love can be an addiction. One thing is for sure is that the chemicals in the brain associated with pleasure are affected in people who are in love – these are dopamine, oxytocin, vasopressin and serotonin. But the major overlap in addiction and being in love occurs where the brain processes dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin. All known drugs of abuse stimulate high levels of dopamine and the chemical is linked to other processes of reward, like sexual intercourse and love. This is why experiencing love can feel like a cocaine rush. Whether in the first rush of falling in love, with its rollercoaster highs and lows and changes in mood and physical well-being, or in love that’s lasted which tends to be calmer and more objective, the brain chemicals associated with happiness still get depleted during a break up. This is for two reasons; one is the flooding of cortisol and the other is that the behaviour that leads to the production of dopamine has stopped. A re-adjustment is required for your brain and body to get used to what isn’t there anymore.
heal
EATING YOUR HEART OUT Most movie montages of heartbreak show an ice-cream, pizza or comfort food binge. It makes sense if your brain is missing the reward-creating behaviours, it will want to replace those behaviours with others – an easy choice is food that’s high in sugar and fat content. It does become a negative cycle, however, because the crash and possible guilty emotions after a binge only highlight the need for more comfort and reward. People tend to reach for nostalgic food when they’re down or lonely – food grannie made or food you eat at family gatherings. Nostalgic food tends to live in the ‘comfort’ zone.
HEARTBREAK SYNDROME Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy is a syndrome commonly known as broken heart syndrome. It’s a condition that happens in reaction to a surge of stress hormones. It’s more likely to affect women than men and mimics a heart attack although it can occur in a perfectly healthy individual without any evidence of blocked arteries. What happens is that a part of the heart temporarily enlarges and doesn’t pump well, while the rest of the heart continues to function normally. It’s rare for broken heart syndrome to be fatal, although it can lead to severe heart muscle failure in the short term. It is treatable and most people recover in a few weeks, with it unlikely to occur again.
Following on from the movie montage, the eating session morphs into a frenetic exercising and self-improvement scenario, where of course the hero emerges looking stunning, toned and very healthy. While that sounds like a great idea, and generally it is because exercise has such good implications for your health and wellbeing, there is a danger of becoming addicted to it. Exercise addiction can be outlined in much the same way as any other addiction; you’ll need more and more of the initial activity to get the desired effects such as the exercise high, better self-esteem, reduction of anxiety. Withdrawal happens when you can’t get to your workout, and makes you feel anxious, tired and irritable. A lack of control can also be experienced, where you feel compelled to exercise, you think about it all the time and it affects your social and work spaces negatively; it takes up all your time and you stop doing other activities. Or you continue exercising even when you are ill or injured. LIFE AFTER LOVE The initial shock and sadness after a break up is hard to ignore. But after a while, you may want to just get on with your life and stop feeling all the emotions. It’s exhausting to be sad all the time. It is important, though, not to suppress emotions – they may demand expression in other ways – from overeating to lashing out or depression. Allow yourself to feel acknowledge you’re sad or angry and be present with the emotion. Then let it go. Write it down or speak to a friend – talk through your feelings to get them aired and allow your brain the space to file them in a healthy way. “Acknowledging the complexity of life may be an especially fruitful path to psychological well-being,” says psychologist Jonathan M. Adler of the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Much like getting over an addiction, overcoming heartbreak requires conscious action. When leaving a rehabilitation facility, recovering addicts are often told to change their living space to reflect the change in habits. If you and your ex-partner spent time in your living room, for example, make it look different so you aren’t reminded of the times you were there together. The same can be said of most things you did together. But, that’s not to say you can’t go to your favourite breakfast spot anymore. Rather, go there with other people and forge new memories. Self-nurture is vital. Speak to yourself as if you would another person going through the same thing. Say things like, “Let’s get out of bed and into a great shower; All that sugar you ate must have made you feel sick, let’s go for a walk. It’ll do you good to get out the house.” In their book ‘How to Mend Your Broken Heart’, Paul McKenna and Hugh Willbourn say, “In heartbreak, there is often a backlog of emotional learning to get through. Do one bit at a time. Your unconscious mind will protect you and give you a rest so you can deal with the next bit. You will learn to step out of the memories, leave them behind, and start a new life.”

B AC K O N T R AC K To keep your cortisol levels in check, make healthy choices even on miserable days: *Swap caffeinated tea for herbal tea – try chamomile, peppermint or ginger to give your digestive tract some gentle treatment. *Eat raw cacao or dark chocolate (70%) instead of any old chocolate to help reduce cortisol levels. Add nuts for a Vitamin B boost to assist serotonin production. *Move – yoga is fantastic for stress release and strengthens your body’s natural relaxation response. But, if even yoga is a bit much, take a brisk walk to energise your body and mind. *Ease the pain – the physical pain of heartbreak is real but before reaching for a paracetamol, try these natural pain killers: ginger, turmeric, Capsaicin, Valerian Root, Magnesium or lavender essential oil. *Get social – it may be the last thing you want to do but being with other people will help you find your balance again. If you can’t face any mutual friends, find a group of like-minded people you can hang out with and have new experiences (Google Meet-Up is a great place to start). *Be kind to yourself – heartbreak is exceptionally hard, so don’t expect yourself to get over it and move on. Allow yourself to feel and grieve when the emotions surface. A key helper is to experience all the emotions you need to and turn your yearning for the other into a yearning for yourself. Learn through the experience of heartbreak to love yourself more and open your heart to the possibility of loving again. Rather than allowing heartbreak to break you, use it to strengthen you and build your capacity for love. Love yourself first and this will enable you to love more fully and healthily. If you were loving the other person as a proxy for what you needed to love inside yourself, then now you will learn to love another person for who they are instead of what they can fulfil in you.
T IP A cacao ceremony is a great way to begin the healing process of a broken heart. Find one in your area with a simple internet search. It might involve pouring a warm cacao drink saying a prayer of gratitude, then sipping the drink slowly. Raw cacao will elevate your mood while your senses become more heightened. A heart opening meditation combined with some journaling is often also incorporated.

TIBB:MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MEDICINE by Robyn Wilkinson
Everything in the universe is interconnected in one way or another. Human beings, like all other organic organisms are part of a larger cosmos and are created from the same primary matter. Harmonious balance exists between heaven and earth, the clouds and the seas and all that exists within them. This delicate balance is orchestrated to a symphony that is conducted by a supreme power a ‘divine wisdom’ that controls everything. The essence of this ‘divine wisdom’ is inherent in every entity. Hippocrates called this wisdom “Vis Medicentrix Natura”. The Chinese call it ‘Chi’, Ayurveda calls it ‘Prana’, Homeopathy calls it ‘Life Force’. Unani-Tibb calls it ‘Physis’.

feel greatly honoured to be writing about Professor Rashid Bhikha, the founder of Tibb in South Africa. Having known him for some time and worked with him over the years, I have huge respect for the monumentous milestones he has achieved during his career. Just to give you a little background, Professor Rashid Bhikha was the founder of Be-Tabs Pharmaceuticals, which he grew into the largest privately owned pharmaceutical company in South Africa. After gravitating towards a more natural approach to healing he left pharmaceuticals behind and developed a natural range of medicines based on herbal ingredients. The Tibb range of medicines has become much-loved and known to be both effective and affordable. Septogard in particular is a household name used as a natural antibiotic to support the body’s innate healing power. His conviction about the effectiveness of the natural system of medicine known as Unani Tibb evolved when his youngest daughter became incredibly ill, first with jaundice and then a life threatening lung infection. The Prof researched every natural alternative and orthodox treatment available and eventually went over to Pakistan to study. There he learnt about Unani Tibb medicine, selfempowerment and being pro active about health, practicing prevention and knowing what your body requires - health according to your individual body type.
After trying multiple different protocols with his daughter and seeing how incredibly well Unani Tibb worked, he was highly impressed and set about to bring this system of medicine to South Africa. His vision: to provide affordable healthcare to everyone and to empower people to take responsibility for their health. Prof B, as he is fondly known, founded the Ibn Sina Institute of Tibb to promote this system of medicine and during his time as a member of the Allied Health Professions Council has achieved great success in spearheading its recognition in South Africa. Unani Tibb was recognized by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa in August 2001. Prof has so many acheivements, it’s impossible to mention them all in one article. He is the author of many books including Tibb – Traditional Roots of Medicine in Modern Routes to Health and a Treatise on the Philosophy, Aetiology, Pathology, Diagnosis and Therapeutics from Greek, Arab and Unani sources called Theoretical Principles of Tibb. He has also set up numerous clinics throughout South Africa to help bring affordable health to people that need it.

T ibb me d icine – ‘ A S cience o f M e d icine an d the A rt o f C are ’ Tibb medicine is formally recognized by the Allied Health Professions Council in South Africa. It is an all embracing philosophy that has a rich and ancient tradition as well as a strong scientific basis. The profession of Tibb or Unani-Tibb is one of the three main philosophies of health care currently practiced in the East, alongside Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine. Unani (a Persian word meaning Greek) and Tibb (an Arabic word meaning medicine) derives from Egyptian, Greek, Arab, European and Indian medical systems. Understandably we see the thoughts and influence of Hippocrates, Galen and the Arab physicians Rhazes, Ibn Nafees and Ibn Sina (also known as Aviccenna) in this practice. Tibb medicine is based on the original patho-physiological, diagnostic and therapeutic system of the humoural theory of Greek medicine. Over the centuries Tibb has been known by various names including Greco-Arab Medicine, Western Holistic Medicine, Unani Medicine and Tibb. The core philosophy of Tibb was conceptualized by Hippocrates, who postulated the theory of humours; Galen who introduced the concept of temperament and Ibn Sina and his contemporaries, who completed the final classification, codification and implementation of this system of medicine. Tibb is the foundation on which modern medicines is based.
WHAT IS TIBB Tibb is a holistic approach to healing disease, that believes in restoring balance to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of man, using medicine, diet and lifestyle adjustments to effect a cure. Equal emphasis is put on the maintenance and prevention as is on treatment of disease. Tibb focuses on understanding the creation of the universe and all it contains and the interrelationship within it. It emphasises the nature of man, the macrocosm, and the interaction between man and the universal macrocosm. Fundamental to Tibb is what’s known as physis - an organising principle within man; ‘an inherent wisdom, a mechanism that allows the body to heal itself’. Acknowledging Physis in the healing process is essential (the word physician comes from the word physis). When we delve into the marvels of the body, we realise it has been created with self-regulatory, self-healing mechanisms controlled by Physis to maintain the correct structure and temperament to perform desired functions. Another key aspect of Tibb is recognising each persons individual temperament. Temperament takes into account a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual characteristics. All of these attributes have a direct influence on the state of health and inclination towards illnesses and form the personal organic constraints of an individual. As Hippocrates said, “It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease the person has”. With this in mind, we see the temperament, over and above the individual disease, as a central principle of Tibb. Four main temperaments are identified as the Sanguinous personality (Hot & Moist); the Phlegmatic personality (Cold & Moist); the Melancholic personality (Cold & Dry); and the Bilious personality (Hot & Dry); Besides temperature inclinations, temperament is determined through, the physical appearance; (muscle, fat, bone structure and frame); colour of the body (especially face, eyes and tongue); bodily functions; dietary habits; response to heat, cold, dryness and moistness; inclinations and tendencies; and emotions and personality characteristics. Once temperament is understood, lifestyle choices can be made that contribute to a happy, healthy and productive lifestyle in harmony with the environment. Although Physis and temperament are fundamental considerations in Tibb medicine, there are many aspects that contribute to a complete healing diagnosis. The bodily fluids or humours are taken into account and the ways in which we interact with the environment. These constitute our lifestyle factors like the food and drink we consume; the quality of air and how we breathe; our movement and rest cycles and habits; our emotional life; sleep and wakefulness; and elimination of waste and toxins. Remembering that certain foods have heating or cooling effects, and that exercise increases heat and dryness and that emotions such as anger produce heat, we can analyse how our temperaments are being affected. It is this interaction with the environment and the ability to digest the environment effectively without accumulating toxins that creates health. Unani-Tibb is a system of medicine that complements allopathic medicine suitably and with encouraging results. Having a great deal in common with the therapies augmented by African Traditional Medicine, it could possibly be the link whereby modern and traditional medicine can merge. South Africa is in need of effective health solutions for all its people… an integrative, centuries old, yet scientific system of medicine could very well be the answer. Boost your
IMMUNITY
By Su Ludewig
Being proactive and building a strong immune system, using positive lifestyle approaches and repairing a compromised system is all covered in this article by Naturopath Su Ludewig from the Menlyn Park Branch of Wellness Warehouse in Pretoria.
A basic tenet of naturopathy is that, given the right opportunities and the right help, the body can heal itself.
The immune defence system is designed to protect the body from infection. Its actions are facilitated by immunoglobulins (our antibodies) and cells present in the lymphatic system (cellular immunity). A deficiency, either genetic or acquired, of either system will increase susceptibility to infection and certain diseases. Since the discovery of the first immune deficiency disease in the early 1950s, over 20 distinct types have been reported, most of which are hereditary. The immune system is susceptible to acquired malfunction from a number of sources. One very controversial cause of immune malfunction is the procedure using vaccinations against common childhood and epidemic diseases. In a compromised immunity, the thymus gland seems to be most severely affected, altering the function and activity of this all-important kingpin of the immune system. While severe infectious diseases may be the result of immune deficiencies, they may also be the proceeding cause. For example, it is common for allergies, a frequent result of immune malfunction, to follow a severe case of mononucleosis, hepatitis, rheumatic fever, candidiasis, or other acute viral or bacterial disease that may reduce production by the thymus gland of T-helper cells necessary to moderate the allergy response. Another common source of immune deficiencies is nutritional deficiencies. The immune system can only be as healthy as its organised cells and tissues. Nutritional deficiency may be simply the lack of nutrient intake, or poor digestive and absorption processes. Stress, pharmaceutical drugs (chemotherapy, including antibiotic usage), undiagnosed or untreated allergies, environmental pollutants, and poor hygiene can all contribute to a weakened immune system. A weakened immune system makes the body susceptible to opportunistic viruses or bacteria. In fact, any infectious disease is considered an immune deficiency because if the immune system is functioning adequately, no such infection can take place. This includes the range of infectious conditions from colds to pneumonia, or diseases of unknown origin like multiple sclerosis, multiple dystrophy, and AIDS.

T R E AT M E N T S Prevention, alongside a healthy lifestyle is fundamental in any disease prevention strategy. A basic tenet of naturopathy is, that given the right opportunities and the right help, the body can heal itself. With any immune system dysfunction, the goal of treatment must be to boost the immune system naturally. This includes all the lifestyle markers of good immunity, the ‘Seven Doctors’ - fresh air, sunshine, clean water, clean fresh raw foods, exercise, rest and a happy heart. Avoiding practices and conditions that predispose towards disease and ensuring the body has enough nutrients for self-healing is the basis of any protocol to regain health. In addition, assistance from new and traditional vitamin, mineral and botanical supplements. Each case of immune deficiency must be considered individually. Classic forms of immune deficiency may need to be treated by an immunologist. The treatment protocol must address first things first; for example systemic candidiasis which often underlies chronic infection, must be addressed as a priority, including addressing potential leaky gut syndrome. Then detoxification appropriate for the individual person, cellular metabolism boosted at mitochondrial levels, and possibly a rebuild of the immune system. The tissues affected most will need local therapy. They offer valuable clues as to the specific nutrients needed.

*Diet Move towards a less acidic and more alkaline diet. Acid-forming foods include animal foods (red meat, dairy) and refined cereal (bread, rice pasta, etc). Initially a vegan diet majoring in raw fruit and a ‘rainbow’ salad with herbs, flowers like nasturtium, steamed vegetables and limited amounts of whole-grain cereal like oats and brown rice might be appropriate for a period of cleansing, alternating with a few days of juice and broth fasting. Choose easily digested proteins that include raw nuts and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame seeds), sprouts, salmon and sardines, soy foods (tofu, soy milk), cheese, yoghurt, and eggs. Opt for organic foods and drink lots of pure water to help detoxify metabolic and exogenous waste products. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, recreational drugs, refined sugar and refined flour – all of these suppress the immune system. The less refined or processed (which includes cooking) the better. Fried foods and vegetable oils and fats (margarine) are also taboo. *Stress management Both the emotional body and the physical need nurture and healing. Negative emotions like worry, anger, fear, anxiety, rejection, hurt sorrow, depression and insecurity all contribute to immune system depression. Exercising, having a massage, doing yoga, meditating are forms of stress management that can be practiced regularly alongside getting good quality sleep and rest.

There’s something to be said for a healthcare system that’s been used worldwide for over two centuries. A truly holistic approach to wellbeing, homeopathy treats each person as a unique individual, selecting the most appropriate medicine based on his or her specific symptoms and health history. Recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic system in the world, it’s most widely practised in India and South America but used by millions across the rest of the globe.

W H AT I S H OM E O PATHY? Developed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century, homeopathy is named after the Greek words for ‘similar suffering’. It’s based on the principle that ‘like cures like’, and assumes that the body knows what it is doing, and that symptoms are its way of taking action to overcome illness. A gentle natural treatment approach, it works in harmony with the immune system, triggering or intensifying the body’s own healing mechanisms. According to homeopathy, the same substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat similar symptoms in a sick person. The healing response that’s automatic in living organisms is called the vital response, and the similar medicine administered in homeopathy acts as a stimulus to this natural reaction, giving the body the information it needs to do its own healing. For example, a homeopath may prescribe minute amounts of coffee for insomnia, or red onion for watery eyes. The idea is to actually mimic the symptoms of illness rather than suppress them, encouraging the body’s own healing process. The second principle of homeopathy is that only the minimum dose of a medicine should be prescribed. This should be just enough to initiate the healing process, which then continues of its own accord. Homeopathic medicines given in minimum doses are seen to stimulate the body’s vital response without producing the gross side effects that can be experienced in conventional treatment. W H AT A R E H OM E O PATHIC RE ME DIE S? Using natural materials from flora, fauna and minerals, homeopathic medicines are prepared by repeatedly diluting the substances using a special method of shaking called ‘succussion’. After being prepared in this way, the remedies are referred to as ‘potentised’. The amount of the actual substance decreases with each dilution (to the point where the substance can no longer be chemically detected), but the curative power of the remedies is believed to increase due to their energetic or vibrational pattern.

W H AT C A N I E X P E C T AFTE R SE E IN G A HO ME O PATH? The changes can be minimal at first. While some people actually experience a slight worsening of symptoms initially, this is a sign that the body’s natural healing systems have started to combat the illness. Homeopathy is often referred to as a science that’s practised as an art, as the small doses prescribed will only have an effect when a person has a hypersensitivity to the substance in that minute dosage. If the wrong medicine is given, nothing will happen. While the remedies can be fast acting in acute cases (like inflammation, fever, motion sickness, vomiting and diarrhea), the treatment of chronic disease can require more time and patience. D OE S H OM E OPATHY WO RK? As homeopathy can’t be measured or explained scientifically, scientists and skeptics are quick to dismiss it on the grounds of the placebo effect. It has, however, been shown to work on babies and animals, who obviously aren’t aware of the preparations they are being given and thus not able to anticipate a particular result. There is also a significant body of research pointing to the efficacy of the approach. Most recently, the Swiss Government released a report determining it as both effective and more affordable than conventional medicine. W H AT A R E T H E BE N E FITS O F HO ME O PATHY? According to the World Health Organisation, homeopathy is the fastest growing healthcare system in the world. Its popularity could be attributed to a number of factors. It works with the body’s own healing power, aiming to cure the symptoms and the cause of disease rather than simply masking the symptoms. It addresses each individual as a unique case, considering all levels of being (spiritual, emotional, mental and physical). Homeopathic remedies are gentle, free from side effects and safe for everyone (including babies, children, pregnant women and those with serious conditions). While it can be safely combined with conventional medicine, it’s also great for preventative care as it aims to improve a person’s resistance to infection by boosting his or her immune system and overall health. C A N I B U Y M Y OWN HO ME O PATHIC RE ME DIE S? R E D U C E Y O U R R I S K OF S T R O K E Strokes are fairly common especially with people over 60 although anyone can suffer from one. We look at natural ways to reduce the risk of having a stroke.
The most common type of stroke is an ischemic stroke, which occurs when the arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked, severely reducing blood flow. Other types of stroke are: haemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in your brain leaks or ruptures; and a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is a temporary period of symptoms similar to those you’d have in a stroke.1 Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and drinking alcohol. The symptoms include: confusion in understanding, or slurred speech; numbness or paralysis of the leg, arm or face, usually on just one side of the body; blurred or blacked vision in one or both eyes, or seeing double; sudden, severe headache which could cause vomiting and dizziness. REDUCE RISK AND RECOVER2 If you have suffered from a stroke, there is a much greater risk of having another one. Avoiding stress, getting sufficient exercise and eating a healthy diet will go a long way to reducing risk. There are numerous natural ways to help your body recover, such as: * Unhealthy cholesterol can lead to blood clotting, which can cause stroke. Avoid consuming excess saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. * Ginkgo Biloba aids in the prevention of blood clotting and increased blood flow to the brain. It also helps to treat balance and memory problems associated with stroke. Speak to your
health professional if you are also taking blood-thinning medication.3 * Turmeric reduces the formation of blood clots.4 * Ginger decreases bad cholesterol levels, aids poor circulation and prevents blood clots.5 * Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural detoxifier which cleanses the blood of toxins, as well as assists in thinning blood.6 * Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant that aids the immune function and replenishment of tissues. * Coconut oil boosts neural passageways and is high in medium fatty acids.7 * Vitamin B12 aids the body in absorbing fatty acids, including omega-3 fats that play an important role in maintaining brain and nerve tissue health.8 * Taurine assists in increasing oxygen uptake to the brain and stabilising cellular membrane health. * Chinese Motherwort works on the heart, liver and kidney meridians, relieving blood stagnation.9 * Ginseng guards your body against stress and has been found to boost the recovery and stimulate growth of brain neurons.10 * An apple, or two, a day helps to maintain normal blood pressure. * Garlic assists in reducing high blood pressure and helps rid the body of bad cholesterol.11 * Tomatoes can also lower blood pressure and assist in preventing atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of the arteries).12

DID YOU KNOW OMEGAs are just as important as your daily MULTIVITAMINs.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF BOTH OMEGAS AND MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS
Omegas (fish oils) and multivitamins are two of the most commonly used dietary supplements.1 Surveys have shown users of complementary medicine uses both multivitamins and omegas at the same time. Based on the increasing uptake of omega and multivitamin supplements, studies are being conducted to determine the potential health benefits when combining omegas and multivitamins. Preliminary evidence have suggested that vitamins and omegas have synergistic effects.1 A 2014 study that examined the effects of omegas and multivitamin supplementation showed that combining fish oil supplementation with adequate vitamin/mineral intake either through diet or supplementation may help reduce cardiovascular disease risk.1
ABOUT OMEGAS Omega-3 is termed ‘essential’ fatty acids as the body cannot produce them and can only be derived through a diet rich in omega-sources or through supplementation. Numerous trials have consistently shown that these essential fatty acids help to lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, reduce the likelihood of stroke and slow the progression of cardiovascular disease and development of plaque in the arteries.2,3,4 ABOUT VITAMINS, MINERALS AND ANTIOXIDANT A vitamin is an organic compound and a vital nutrient that an organism requires to support life.5 Vitamins, being organic, are vulnerable to heat, light and various chemical processing methods. This means that food must be prepared in very specific ways to preserve the vitamin content and explains why modern-day foods are often lacking in adequate vitamin levels.6
unstable molecules, also known as reactive oxygen species, produced by cells in response to stress. Antioxidants help to prevent or delay some types of cell damage. While supplementation is important when our dietary provides inadequate levels of the essential nutrients, minerals and fatty acids, it is necessary to consult a healthcare professional on the the full benefits, any risks associated and the quality assurance process of supplements. SOLAL® SOLAL® has created an extensive range of naturally-sourced omega fatty acids and multivitamins engineered to provide optimal balance of essential nutrients, vitamins and healthy oils manufactured with only the highest quality and purest ingredients sourced from trusted raw material suppliers. Every batch of raw material is tested to ensure quality, purity and consistency, this process is called QualiSafeTM a 10step quality assurance process unique to SOLAL®, ensuring you and your family is getting the best quality health and wellness products.
Minerals differ from vitamins, in that they are inorganic compounds and thus stable during food preparation or processing and only some minerals are essential for processes within the body.6 Antioxidants are the body’s weapon against free radicals. Free radicals are highly

KEEP YOUR SKIN H Y D R AT E D DU R I N G WINTER
d i d you know ? Hormone changes, stress and lifestyle also effect your skin, and can be exacerbated by cold weather. Keeping up with your exercise programme during winter will help balance stress levels and boost circulation.
Moisturise your skin from the outside with a good moisturiser and from the inside with ample water. It’s cold, so it’s likely you’re sitting inside with either a heater on or you’re clutching the ubiquitous hot water bottle to keep warm. Your heating environment can cause low humidity and dry air that draws moisture from the skin. Even in climes like Cape Town with winter rain you still need to be vigilant as to how you heat your environment. During winter you may spend more time in a hotter than usual shower or bath. Too hot and too long exposure to water can wash off your body’s natural oils, drying out your skin. Harsh and fragranced soaps are also detrimental. Choose natural ingredients and products with essential oils and vitamins. If you can’t forgo a long soak, create a hydrating rose and coconut bath with two tablespoons of coconut oil, 15 drops of rose essential oil and either one cup of powdered milk or two cups full fat milk to the water. And that’s just the outside. What you put into your body can have a huge effect on the way your skin looks and feels. When the weather turns chilly, we reach for food higher in fat and sugar content to give our bodies fuel to keep us warm. We’re also unlikely to drink as much water during the winter months, rather opting for hot drinks. This can contribute to your skin feeling dry and flaky. Hydration is essential for overall health and plays a major role in keeping your skin moisturised.

“Water before a meal is nectar. It replenishes fluids and encourages juicy digestive organs. Small sips during a meal is honey. It helps turn the food into a sauce. Water after a meal is poison because it dilutes stomach acids.” – Dr. Vasant Lad EAT THIS Remember that your skin is an organ and what you do to keep your whole body healthy and well also applies to your skin. Keeping yourself nourished and hydrated will help stave off premature wrinkles and the dryness associated with ageing from hormone changes. Include the following food into your every-day diet to give your skin a moisture boost. *Avocado are rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, fibre and some protein. They’re a great dietary addition for skin and can be eaten on their own, in a salad or blended into a smoothie or a cacao dessert. The protein helps support the structures of collagen and elastin in your skin, while the fat keeps your skin moisturised *Sweet potatoes are filled with Vitamin Aii, which helps with skin renewal and stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for developing the tissue that keeps skin healthy and firm. *Carrots contain an abundance of Vitamin C, a precursor to collagen production. They are also rich in Vitamin A. *Nuts and seeds (walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseed) are all brilliant sources of omega-3 fatty acids, essential for keeping your skin glowing. Nuts also contain a lot of Vitamin E, which help strengthen the skin barrier and retain moisture. *Eggs are high in protein as well as lutein, which improves skin elasticity. *Green tea is filled with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. *Tomatoes are high in lycopene – this is an antioxidant that helps keep skin young. Note that the lycopene content in tomatoes is higher if they are cooked, which means a warming tomato soup or stew can become an integral part of your winter menu. *Coconut oil deposits itself under the skin so it naturally plumps out lines and acts as a moisture-loss barrier. *Eat sunflower seeds to help keep your skin supple. They’re filled with fatty acids, protein and minerals as well as vitamins C, A, and E which guard against free radicals and UV rays.

RECIPE Protein Rich Frittata, as per the recipe below. This takes a bit longer than your usual breakfast snack, but its’ worth the effort – if you’re in a hurry use the same ingredients to make a stove-top omelette. Serves 2 I ngredients 1 spinach leaf, chopped onion, diced 3 large eggs 1 tomato, chopped 1 tsp oregano cup crumbled feta 2 tsp olive oil M ethod 1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius 2. Fry the onions lightly in olive oil and set aside 3. Scramble eggs in a bowl and add in oregano, tomato, onion and spinach 4. Place in an oiled oven dish and pop into the oven for 15-20 minutes (until the mixture is solid. After 10 minutes, sprinkle feta on top. 5. If you’re making this dish omelette-style, simply allow the egg and oregano mix to settle on the bottom of a pan on low heat before sprinkling the tomato, onions, spinach and feta on top. Cover with a lid and allow the mixture to solidify. Remove from heat and fold over, then replace on the heat for a few minutes with the lid back on.

OUTSIDE IN Many ingredients that are good to eat for dry skin also make great face masks and moisturisers. As with food, avoid creams with chemicals – choose organic and natural ingredients and essential oil, or plant based fragrances. * Coconut oil has been used to great effect for thousands of years and can be eaten, added to your bath, used as a moisturiser and sunscreen or as a hair conditioner. If you have the solid oil, simply scoop a little bit out and rub gently between your palms, it’ll melt from your body heat – apply to clean skin. It won’t leave an oily residue once absorbed. * Avocado is great for face masks and moisturisers. Try this for a moisture treatment: Mix a mashed avocado, steamed and mashed carrot, two tablespoons honey, a beaten egg and large tablespoon of double cream. Once smooth, spread over skin and leave to dry. Rinse off in the shower and pat your face dry. * Honey has abundant healing properties. It’s a great moisturising treatment. Mix 5 ml honey with 15 ml coconut oil and slather over your body. Leave it on for 30 minutes before washing off in a bath or shower. * Indigenous natural ingredients like buchu, baobab and aloe are noted for their healing properties - look out for them when choosing a good skincare range.
NATURAL COVER Keep yourself covered with natural materials that don’t scratch or rub. Pure cotton and wool is best, and layers are great for trapping warmed pockets of air while still allowing your skin to breathe. Remember that even on cold and cloudy days, the sun’s rays can still reach you – so protect uncovered skin with natural sunscreen.

a g o Y g n i Study in India by Camilla Marsh
If you are thinking of doing your Yoga Teachers Training in India, look up the Shrimath Yoga school in Gurukrupa. For more info log onto their website at www.shrimathyoga.com

hether you want to teach yoga or deepen your own practice, training in India can’t get more authentic. Camilla Marsh spent some time at a yoga centre in India and we are delighted to share her experience, her tips and insight into her chosen training school. “He was clad in nothing but a loin cloth. His grisly grey beard and wild wayward hair framed his gaunt but youthful face as his eyes shone with the wisdom of a thousand stars. I knelt on the blanket before him as the perfumed steam from a nearby pot mingled with smoke from his hand-rolled cigarette, sending secrets trailing to the universe above. Perched on top of a wild mountain summit as a South Indian summer night swooped in, he touched my head, muttered a blessing, and dropped a small banana into my outstretched hands. It was the single most powerful experience of my life”. And my time in India had been plentiful with such moments of magic.
66 \\ www. wellnesswarehouse . com
India is like no other place on earth. Since returning, I’ve had many people ask what it was like to live there for four months. My only real reply - “you have to experience it for yourself”. India is a powerful, vigorous country. She is majestic and menacing all at once. She forces you to confront your fears and challenge your beliefs, not to mention any notion you may have once held regarding personal space. You will share overnight train rides with four generation families, sip sweet chai on street corners bustling with traffic and livestock, and talk cricket with tuk tuk drivers as you try not stare at their missing teeth and bloody betel-nut-stained gums. In India, you’ll lose your senses and find your soul. My trip there had been a purposeful pilgrimage to complete my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. Shortly after touch down in Bangalore I’d caught a train to a small village 40kms away where I attended Shrimath for 21 days. Shrimath is one of the lesser-known yoga schools but has earned an excellent reputation through word of mouth. There is no greater testament to its excellence than those who have been through its doors. And since attending in February 2016, I have become one of its greatest advocates.
At Shrimath, I didn’t just learn to teach yoga, I learnt to live yoga. Every day for three weeks we lived a yogic life. From our morning mantras that sung in the dawn from its sweet slumber, to our daily asana sessions, sharing time at the village school and meditatively minding the vast garden in the late afternoon glow. It was at Shrimath I learnt to eat with my hands and think with my heart. I learnt about the reign of the stars and the moon over our earthly existence, I became privy to a select few of the treasured Sanskrit secrets. I learnt about the power of thought and the service of selflessness. It’s difficult to put into words the wisdom our teacher bestowed to us beneath the cool canopied respite from the Indian sun. As I listened, my gaze would follow the deep crevices of the overbaked ground as slowly the patterns of my life started to shift together. The way I viewed myself had changed forever. And this eruption of epiphanies was all before the spiritual excursion to the living saint who blessed my existence with a baby banana and a handful of dates.

In India you’ll quickly discover that what is too commonly known in The West as the latest way to slim down and show off, is in fact a sacred blueprint to life, passed down from ancient traditions. You will soon see the intimate connection between body, mind and spirit, and acquire simple, lifelong processes to help uncover your true purpose and key to happiness. Come with no expectations and an empty mind, and you will walk away with all the answers to the questions you’d never even thought to ask. There’s no need to be nervous about travelling to India. As long as you are cautious and alert, you’ll be fine. It’s an intimidating country and it’s got a bad rap, but just keep your wits about you, embrace the craziness of its culture, and you’ll soon fall in love with its characterful chaos.
My top tips f or travelling India : *Don’t drink the tap water! *To be safe don’t drink the water placed in jugs on restaurant tables. *Always carry wet wipes and hand sanitizer with you. *Don’t pay for a hotel room before you have gone up to see it (unless you have pre-booked online). *If a hotel bed looks particularly unclean, lay down a sarong and cover the pillow. *Book train trips as far in advance as possible, seats get booked up fast. *Settle a price with tuk tuk drivers before you get into the vehicle. *Solo female travellers, always say yes when asked if you have a husband. A fake wedding ring doesn’t hurt. *Don’t travel alone on the public buses at night.

People attend yoga retreats for all sorts of reasons – to gain a foundation and understanding of the discipline, to deepen an already existing practice, to recover from or prepare for a challenging life period, or simply to escape for a few days of restoration. While I’ve been practising for years and my own intention was simply to relax and reset, I was surprised by how much I learnt in the two days with retreat host and yogi extraordinnaire Jo lle Sleebos.
Jo lle is a prime example of the dynamite in small packages adage. With a Masters Degree in Economics, she’s spent many years navigating the two worlds as both an economist and a yoga and fitness instructor. I am probably one of hundreds of students who is grateful for the fact that she took the plunge to fully immerse herself in the latter, where her true passion and purpose are palpable. She’s a RYT 500 certified vinyasa, budokon and suspension yoga teacher, as well as a personal trainer and freestyle aerobic instructor. The morning yoga and evening vinyasa classes offered the perfect balance of strength and surrender. The intimate nature of the retreat allowed her prioritisation of correct alignment and execution to really come to the fore, and she adjusted and guided me in ways I had never experienced (or even thought of) in my usual studio classes. Between the juicy evening yin and meditation sessions, the dynamic morning vinyasa and the totally indulgent free time for blimping in the house or enjoying the exclusive strip of beach, there was time for one more very important thing – food! The weekend was catered for by the inimitable Arabella Parkinson of ‘Eat to Thrive’. An integrative nutrition and health coach and holistic chef, Arabella specialises in deeply nourishing, seasonal and sustainable eating that also happens to be incredibly delicious. Between her feast-worthy brunches, colourful snack platters and decadent dinners, I ate far more than I expected to on a health retreat! Add to this the virtually unlimited supply of treats from the likes of Wazoogles, Herbivore, Native, One-Juice and Uber Flavour, and you’ve got a healthy foodie’s dream come true. All told, I couldn’t rate the experience more highly, and would recommend that anyone treat themselves to one of Jo lle’s exclusive upcoming retreats in drool-worthy destinations…

Journey to [ the oyster box ] For over sixty years, the iconic Oyster Box in Umhlanga, Durban has been luring visitors from around the world with its olde-world charm and stunning sea views. Although the hotel opened for business in 1954, it was originally a cottage, named The Oyster Lodge, built in 1863 of Burmese teak, corrugated iron and reinforced concrete. Initially used as a navigational beacon, a tea garden was opened on the site in 1952.
SPA ME If lounging on the deck overlooking the exquisite ocean isn’t enough for you, then experiencing the world-class spa is a must-do. Set in a peacefully luscious tropical garden, the spa offers numerous treatments and packages that will guarantee supreme relaxation and an overall feeling of wellbeing. The spa works on holistic principles, combining ancient wisdom and modern expertise and offers both beauty and health treatments.
Its rich history has been preserved, but modernised, with every aspect of guest’s needs and desires taken beautifully into account. Original and periodrelevant finishings have been used, including the grand revolving door at the entrance, which was originally from the Royal Hotel in Durban. Details like the original black and white checkerboard floor have been continued throughout the hotel.
We tried the Hammam Ceremony, which can be added to any treatment session. It’s similar to a Turkish bath, where you relax in a room heated by a continuous flow of dry, hot air. Then you move into an even hotter room before washing in cold water and then enjoying a deep lemon back massage using heated lemons, which release citric acids that exfoliate and condition your skin. The massage is finished off with sugar and coconut oil. There are so many options, so we also tried the Chakra Balancing Candle Massage, which uses soy-based candles and aromatherapy oils incorporating colour therapy.

HIGH TEA You’ll be hard-pressed to want to do anything much after spending time in the spa, but high tea is an experience not to be missed, either. It’s a feast for the eyes and the palate – set within the Palm Court, with sunlight filtering through and highlighting the chandeliers from the Savoy Hotel in London. You’ll want to take time to enjoy the live piano music while you choose which freshly-baked offerings to taste. If you do manage to resist the afternoon mouth-watering temptations, there are numerous other superlative dining options to choose, including traditional curries and seasonal offerings created from locally-sourced ingredients. ECO-CONSCIOUSNESS Of course, being an eco-conscious traveller is essential and the Oyster Box knows this. Not only do they ensure all products used are locally sourced and environmentally friendly, they also consistently take part in beach clean-ups as well as other community-based programmes to ensure sustainability. A F A M I L Y A FF A I R Whether you’re planning on a deeply relaxing weekend with me-time on the menu or you’d like to have a beautiful break with your children (human or animal), there are facilities for everyone. Children under 12 stay for free and are equipped with a backpack filled to the brim with holiday essentials, from fishing nets and beachballs to colouring books and a wrist band, giving them access to all number of treats. What we also really loved was the attention to detail for single female travellers – you can opt for female only service staff, with special attention paid to safety and security in your room, so you can truly relax and enjoy your time away.
GET AWAY The hotel sits majestically on Umhlanga’s beachfront overlooking the Indian Ocean, just a few steps away from the lighthouse. With 86 luxurious rooms, the Oyster Box is a beautiful getaway that allows you to truly step out of your life and out of time.

C ARISSA GEYSER TRAVEL LIG HT
I am a hypnotherapist and energy healer with a passion for helping others. I studied client-centred hypnotherapy at SAIH (South African Institute of Hypnotism). Hypnotherapy is very different from the theatrics of stage and TV hypnosis. Hypnosis for therapy has only one aim - to heal. It affords us the opportunity to access the subconscious mind, where all the answers to what ails us lie. My function is to guide clients through the answer-finding process by asking relevant questions and offering support throughout the journey. Hypnotherapy can help with a multitude of difficulties. Some of the more common of these are stress, insomnia, compulsive behaviours, phobias, commitment issues, insecurity, chronic pain and more. One of the most popular areas that hypnotherapy can aid in is smoking cessation. The modality of energy healing that I offer is called aafiyah energy healing. Still relatively young, this therapy originates in the UK, where it was developed by Zuhair Girach. The word ‘aafiyah’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘wellbeing’. It goes beyond the confines of the body to include an individual’s entire life. Pure, clean energy exists and vibrates through everything in nature, from the smallest grain of sand to the largest iceberg. When we experience blockages in our energy flow, it results in disease. By channelling this pure energy from the Earth, I am able to assist the client in releasing these blockages and allowing the body to start healing itself again.
My practice is dedicated to helping you travel lightly. Life doesn’t have to be a long hike with a bag larger than yourself weighing you down. All the ‘baggage’ (emotional, physical, mental and spiritual) we’re carrying is against the natural flow of life. This weight on our shoulders can make the journey extremely challenging, exhausting and painful, ultimately robbing us of a life full of passion and joy.

MICHELLE LESKE M ETAM ORP HO SIS
Mantra Yoga Art Studio is a space for creatives and aspiring positive minds. We are constantly challenged by our fast-paced lives, and seldom offer our souls an opportunity to simply appreciate the present moment. Art allows us to do this, not only through creation but also viewing. Creativity can bring about a level of mindfulness that leads to a greater understanding of ourselves relative to the societal structure we live in. We are not abstract beings - we are all connected through reflected light, and it’s only the filters and conditioning we impose on ourselves that lead to missed experiences and misunderstandings.
Dr. Lana Pepler completed a B.Sc Hons. in Chemistry before her interest in a holistic approach to healthcare prompted her to complete a fiveyear Masters Degree in Technology – Homeopathy. She is registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa and a member of The Homeopathic Association of South Africa, and was an acting director of The Health Society of South Africa. She also served as project manager for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
I believe in healing through travelling, and have a particular interest in the magic of Egypt. My Goddess Tours to Egypt are a dream come true for me. I’ve always wanted to take people to Egypt because of the life-changing healing I’ve received there myself. I will be running my third Goddess Tour to Egypt at the end of this year, and from the feedback I’ve received from previous participants, the previous two adventures have been successful in bringing about significant shifts in those who’ve journeyed with me.
Dr. Pepler has been in private practice for the past eight years, and has a special interest in biopuncture, a homeopathic treatment modality that issues low-dose homeopathic injections to specific body points to promote healing. Her training in first line therapy allows her to combine her homeopathic knowledge and therapeutic lifestyle changes to address chronic disease. She follows a classical homeopathic approach, and combines this with various different treatment modalities tailored to each individual.
Do you feel called to visit Egypt, experience the magic stored in the temples, heal your heart and start creating your own heaven on Earth? Do you need to be gently guided back to a space of true self-love? If so, you may want to join me in exploring the third eye chakra in Giza, awakening your inner goddess at the foot of the sphinx, meditating and chanting in the pyramids, accessing higher energies in Abydos, tapping into the power of Ramses, honouring the goddess at Dendara, flowing along the river of Luxor, being humbled in the Valley of the Queens, sailing through the Loch and much more.
Yoga is taught and experienced through visual awareness with a developed understanding of the chakra system. It can be an extremely uplifting experience. In an overcrowded studio, the ego often creates distractions that can lead to incorrect alignment during one’s asana practice. Unless there is a teacher to hold the group energy well, the individual’s attention can be easily lost throughout the practice. For this reason, yoga classes at Mantra Yoga are open to a maximum of 12 to 16 people. Developing a meditative state through yoga and creativity can help us cultivate self-love and access change. At Mantra Yoga we hope to develop a community of evolved consciousness through regular events and classes that serve to develop the soul. Our mission is to create an energetic exchange that fosters greater harmony throughout Cape Town, beginning in our special home in the Southern Suburbs. Dr. Pepler uses time-honoured methods of healing coupled with modern techniques, blood testing and special investigations for further evaluation and diagnosis. The intimate tour is limited to 16 participants, so have a look at my website for more details if you don’t want to miss out. I so look forward to guiding you along your healing journey in extraordinary Egypt. Egypt 082 378 5859 leskemichelle47@gmail.com www.awakenthegoddess.info
