DECEMBER WIND DOWN

T

his year-end seems to have come particularly quickly and if you feel you aren’t ready, we hope this issue will help you along. Whatever celebratory arrangements you have or holidays you’ve planned, make sure you’re stress free, well prepared and safe.

Our December issue is filled with healthy alternatives to festive indulgences. We show you how the festive season can be just as delicious in sugar-free form, we also look at how to prepare for, and balance indulgences, and give you a reminder to check on drinking habits. Giving is so much a part of December, we feature ways to give back and how to practise altruism. We’re also delighted to announce the opening of the Happy Water Caf in our Kloof street branch, it’s such a fun concept and the water tastes delicious. We’ve included an article on the concept behind it. We’ve got flower power, natural fertility, summer beauty, gift ideas and more. Altogether, we are honoured to share the festive season with you and hope a balance of holiday fun, wholesome celebration and summer activity make your holiday season memorable and successful. Ultrasound Osteoporosis Test In South Africa, 1 in 3 women develop osteoporosis in their lifetime. Bone density screening is important but can be pricey. Wellness Warehouse has a new type of affordable ultrasound screening covered by medical aid and safe when pregnant. We sent Anna Guerin, our Marketing Manager, to try it out. Osteoporosis can affect young and old, but it’s a disease that can be prevented and treated. Five years ago, Anna was diagnosed with osteopenia, a condition considered a precursor to osteoporosis, it’s where bone mineral density is lower than normal. Anna is considered high risk because she’s petite, fair-haired, on the contraceptive injection, and has a family history of osteoporosis. Admittedly, she drank caffeinated fizzy drinks and ate a little too much sugar. This, along with exercise and sun exposure can affect the health of your bones. Since then Anna cut down her caffeine intake to one cup a day, rarely has fizzy drinks or sugar and exercises more. Although she expected an improved result, she was delighted when the test showed her bone density as above average. Colin Owen, who tested Anna, confirmed that lifestyle and dietary changes can prevent osteoporosis. Anna’s revised lifestyle is likely the reason for her excellent reading. Colin explained that an acidic body, caused by caffeine, sugar, and fizzy drinks, can leach calcium from the bones as the body uses it to balance its pH. Preventing osteoporosis can be as simple as getting more exercise and supplementing your diet with extra vitamin D and calcium. If necessary, osteoporosis medications can be prescribed by your doctor. The internationally approved ultra sound test takes 20 minutes and measures bone mineral content and flexibility with WHO-approved scores on both. It can also detect osteopenia. Call Tel: 021 487 5420 to book an appointment. The test costs R350.

HOT TOPIC TOPIC is a recently launched initiative that hopes to clean up mis-labeling of products. It stands for Testing of Products Initiated by Consumers and is a consumer-led and funded project set to test the authenticity of natural and organic products in SA. Mis-labeling of consumer products and food fraud is rife in South Africa. It’s estimated that between a third and half of products on our shelves are mis-labelled. One of Topic’s aims is to protect the consumer from false claims and mis-labelling through laboratory testing and factory and farm visits. Get more information www.topic.org.za

Cha-cha-cha-chia C

hia is a seed that’s considered a ‘superfood’ because it’s so packed with natural goodness. ‘Chia’ means ‘strength’ in the Aztec language, and legend has it that it’s been used as an energy booster in South America for thousands of years. Chia is full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fibre, antioxidants and calcium. Unlike flaxseeds, chia seeds can be absorbed by the body without needing to be milled or broken down. You’ll get about 4g of protein and a full 11g of fibre from two tablespoons of chia seeds.

How to use chia Try chia in your morning oats. Or use chia seeds to replace your oats like we do at Wellness Cafés. They swell and soften in liquid, which is why they make a great breakfast stirred into nut ‘milk’. You could also add chia to your smoothies or sprinkle them over yoghurt for added fibre, vitamins and minerals.

did you know? · Chia seeds are gluten-free · Chia seeds are a great vegan source of omega fatty acids · Chia seeds are low GI and banting friendly · Chia seeds contain powerful antioxidants that help protect the body against the effects of stress

Dr. Hauschka works with the skin’s own natural rhythms and processes to restore and maintain the skin’s health.

DR. HAUSCHKA

TRIBUTE TO ELISABETH Dr Hauschka is one of our favourite skincare ranges. For over 47 years Dr. Hauschka Skin Care has formulated natural products that support the skin’s biology for a balanced, vital and radiant skin complexion. They have a unique and holistic approach to health and beauty designed to respect your skin’s wisdom. As Caro Copeland, Chief Executive of Tocara Skin & Body Science says, “The body absorbs 60% of what you put on your skin so it’s vital your skin-care products contain only what’s good for the body. Dr. Hauschka is fully certified as 100% natural.” Caro has been the official distributer of Dr. Hauschka in South Africa for ten years.

“People need two kinds of beauty – inner and outer.” Elisabeth Sigmund (1914–2013)

O

n 25 October 2014 Elisabeth Sigmund, the revered and greatly missed co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, who passed away last year, would have celebrated her 100th birthday.

SKIN-CARE PHILOSOPHY Central to the philosophy behind Dr. Hauschka is that your skin inherently knows how to regulate itself. All the preparations are formulated to support the skin to function properly, rather than replace or manipulate the skin’s natural tasks.

14

A core principle of Dr. Hauschka is to insist on only the finest quality medicinal plant extracts and natural ingredients. The ingredients are either organic, biodynamic or wild-harvested. Every ingredient that goes into a Dr. Hauschka preparation has an important job to do.

UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY During the 1920s Dr. Rudolf Hauschka discovered a unique rhythmical extraction method, which captures the life force of the powerful healing plants during extraction and processing without the use of alcohol. Although primarily involved in medicines he considered launching his own skincare range to complement the medicinal preparations. In the 60’s his ideas became a reality when he met Vienna-born, cosmetologist helping you live life well

Elizabeth Sigmund. Elisabeth had her own formulations, and began to add Hauschka remedies to her preparations and was amazed at the immediate results she got. Dr. Hauschka had a profound wisdom about the best ways to treat the skin naturally, having been a pioneer and world leader in developing natural remedies and medicines. Their combined acumen led to the launch of the Dr. Hauschka products in 1967.

“When we developed these unconventional skin care products we naturally felt like rebels.” Elisabeth Sigmund (1914–2013)

Tuning into changes in the skin Skin is a flexible, strong, yet sensitive organ. The demands made on it are varied and intense. It’s the first point of contact between you and the world and needs special care. At Dr. Hauschka, we refer to ‘skin conditions’, which are changeable, rather than the static ‘skin type’. You need specific

beauty & wellskin

care concepts for different days, places, seasons and stages of life. For example you might use Quince Day Cream if you have normal to dehydrated skin most days of the year, but apply Rose Day Cream on days when your skin is feeling sensitive. Dr. Hauschka has products to suit you, whatever your skin condition or stage of life. The precious product compositions stimulate your skin’s natural regeneration. When you look in the mirror, you can see more than just a familiar face: signals are emitted by your skin, lips and eyes that are subtle indications of your body’s response to your environment. Dr. Hauschka’s belief is you can sense what would benefit you today and what would help you be at one with yourself and the world.

The classic hero for 47 years... Rose Day Cream is the centrepiece of the range. It captures the strength and softness of biodynamically grown damask roses to nourish and protect dry and sensitive skin and skin prone to redness and dilated capillaries. Although its formula has been altered slightly over the years, its unique moisturising properties remain unchanged. It’s now even richer in roses and has sustaining carnauba wax.

And then there’s the treatments: To experience a Dr. Hauschka Face and Body treatment is to be transformed. Based on our time-proven, signature method of artful touch, each treatment is designed to work with your body’s natural rhythms to transform you on the inside and outside. The same methods and techniques that inform our products, provide the bases of our facial and body treatments. By using a holistic, rhythmic approach, we provide stimuli that support skin renewal and overall wellbeing. ‘The top-quality growing methods, the unique method of extraction, and the way the product is applied to the skin – these are what make the preparations and

treatments so powerful and effective,’ says Elizabeth King, Account Director for Dr. Hauschka SA. Elizabeth has returned home after 15 years in the UK, where she worked as Dr. Hauschka UK brand principal.

What does Dr. Hauschka mean by ‘holistic’? The simple answer is that we always keep the big picture in mind. For any action we take and every decision we make, Dr. Hauschka takes the time to look at all the ramifications it may have on the skin, health, the community and the planet.

Sustainable partnerships around the world Where an organic version of a raw material is not yet available Dr. Hauschka initiates organic or biodynamic farming projects. Dr. Hauschka works with local communities around the world to establish fair trade initiatives that provide the highest quality botanical ingredients while helping to promote sustainable agriculture and economic self-reliance.

From the Cape of Good Hope In 2009 the Dr. Hauschka Med range was launched, featuring formulations for extremely dry skin, and neurodermitis. The key ingredient, the Ice Plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), is grown in Wellington, South Africa, by Parceval Ltd Pharmaceuticals, on their beautiful, biodynamic Waterkloof Farm. The farm has been cultivating the Ice Plant for 14 years and now produces around ten tons a year. The Ice Plant Face Cream is a popular product in the Dr. Hauschka Med range. For this cream, the precious juice of the Ice Plant combines with high-quality poppy seed oil, noticeably reducing dryness and associated itchiness and providing the skin with an invisible, stabilising protective layer.

A few examples of these fair trade initiatives: • First organic mango butter worldwide as a result of a cultivation project in India. • Damask rose essential oil from Afghanistan and, following a sevenyear biodynamic cultivation project, the highlands of Ethiopia. • Shea Butter from Bukino Faso. • Ice Plant from South Africa

Celebrities love Dr. Hauschka Many actors insist on Dr. Hauschka during their film shoots, when the skin is subject to particularly harsh treatment. Three common favourites among both female and male celebs are:

• Soothing Cleansing Milk to remove make-up • Rose Day Cream for dry, sensitive skin • Melissa Day Cream for redness and combination skin The full range of Dr. Hauschka products are available at Wellness Warehouse. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

did you know? The Dr. Hauschka company is held in a foundation trust and can never be bought or sold, this means safeguarding its values and ethos. 15

BAOBAB CHOCOLATE TART

MARBLE HALVA

Serves: 6-8 people Prep time: 15 minutes

Serves: 20 squares

Think of the most incredible chocolate tart you can imagine, but with no bad fats or sugar. It’s also 100% raw and suitable for vegans, vegetarians and coeliacs.

INGREDIENTS 250G CASHEWS 75G PISTACHIOS 50G ALMONDS 50G BAOBAB POWDER 100G CACAO BUTTER 10 X PITTED DATES 1 X LARGE ORANGE 2 X RIPE AVOCADOS 3 X HEAPED TEASPOON RAW CACAO POWDER 3 X HEAPED TEASPOONS FLAX 100G HONEY PINCH OF HIMALAYAN SALT

1. Gently heat the cacao butter in a metal container suspended over a pot with heated water. 2. Put the almonds, pistachios, dates and 25g of baobab powder into a food processor and blitz. 3. Add the melted cacao butter into the mixture, try not to over blend it, you’ll need a slightly coarse texture for the base of the tart (almost like a crushed biscuit). 4. Put the mixture into a lightly greased (using some melted cacao butter) cake baking tin and press down to get a nice even base about 2-4cm deep. 5. Put the avocados, honey, cacao powder, flax, cashews and salt into a food blender (you need to use a blender to get a luscious smooth texture) and mix. 6. Add the remaining 25g of baobab powder and zest of the whole orange. Squeeze the orange juice and add this slowly to the mixture until you are left with a rich chocolate velvety texture. 7. Lastly, add the chocolate mixture to the base prepared earlier, cover with cling film and place in the fridge. Place in the freezer 5 minutes before you serve to help set the top of the base. Cut and serve. For other delicious recipes like this one, log onto www.theafricanchef.com.

Once you’ve made this halva, hide it or this delicious guilt-free treat will tend to disappear.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BASE: 1/2 CUP CASHEWS, LIGHTLY TOASTED 3/4 CUP SESAME TAHINI 1/4 CUP SESAME SEEDS, LIGHTLY TOASTED 1 TSP PURE VANILLA EXTRACT PINCH FINE SEA SALT 3 TBSP AGAVE NECTAR 10-20 DROPS STEVIA LIQUID, TO YOUR TASTE

INGREDIENTS FOR THE MARBLE SWIRL: 30G ORGANIC UNSWEETENED HIGH CACAO CHOCOLATE 1 TBSP AGAVE NECTAR 10-20 DROPS STEVIA LIQUID, TO YOUR TASTE

TO MAKE THE BASE 1. Put the cashews into a blender and blend until they are as small as crumbs. 2. Add the rest of the base ingredients and blend until the texture of a thick dough. Don’t add any liquid, even if it feels too dry. Break up the dough with your fingers and distribute it evenly around the food processor bowl. Set aside.

AT BIO-WHEAT FLOUR WE PUT THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF PEOPLE FIRST... BIO-WHEAT IS THE NATURAL, HEALTHY CHOICE.

IT’S A WAY OF LIFE Produced on a 5th generation family farm in the wheat-growing area of the Overberg in the Western Cape, Bio-Wheat Flour promises to have nothing added and nothing removed. Our range consists of Coarse White and Brown Flour, Cake, Rye and Wholegrain Flour, Bran Flakes and Whole Wheat Berries.

METHOD: 1. Trickle the chocolate over the halva pouring it carefully in a circle shape. It shouldn’t cover the halva completely as you want to get a marble effect. 2. Process very briefly so the chocolate is unevenly distributed, you don’t want it to look completely chocolatey. 3. Put the mixture onto a big piece of gladwrap. Fold a piece of plastic over it and press it into a rectangle. Refrigerate until it’s firm and then cut into squares to serve. It will keep for up to a week.

POACHED PEARS Serves: 4 Prep time: 20 mins preparation, 1 hour simmering time Can be made 8 hours ahead This is a delicious low calorie dessert infused with flavour. It can be made in a few different ways (with or without wine) depending on your requirements and taste.

INGREDIENTS 1/2 TABLESPOON CARDAMOM PODS 1 X 3CM CINNAMON STICK 2 CUPS DRY RED WINE (MERLOT IS GOOD)* 1/4 CUP XYLITOL OR HONEY 1 ½ TABLESPOONS FRESH LEMON JUICE 1/4 TEASPOON SAFFRON THREADS PINCH OF HIMALAYAN SALT 4 FIRM RIPE PEARS, PEELED, STEMS INTACT TIP: You can replace the wine with Chai Tea if you like

1. Gently warm the cardamom and cinnamon in a pan to release the flavour. 2. Put the spices, wine, xylitol, lemon juice, saffron, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until xylitol dissolves. Bring to a simmer and place pears bottom up. You can leave them unpeeled if you like but then pierce them in a few places with a fork so the infusion is able to penetrate.

3. Don’t worry if the pears aren’t completely submerged. Leave lid off and heat on medium (not boiling over) for about an hour. 4. Remove the pears, increase heat and boil the remaining liquid until is has reduced to a cup, about 10–15 minutes. 5. Make this recipe the day before if preferred, just cover and refrigerate pears. It’s best to serve the pears and reduction at room temperature. 6. Serve it with a dollop of double cream plain yoghurt or vanilla yoghurt.

There aren’t that many role models for people 50 and over to look up to who are enjoying their age, doing new things, reinventing themselves, having fun, and looking good.

Beatrice Holst is Sexy,

Raw & Roxy

Raw and Roxy is one of Cape Town’s sexiest foodie hot spots. It’s in the heart of trendy Woodstock, inside the Woodstock Co-op. There’s no signage advertising Raw and Roxy – it’s that popular that word of mouth alone has people flocking to sample the raw vegan pastas, salads, juices and ‘Love Elixirs’ that Danish-born Beatrice Holst serves up fresh and raw every day.

B

eatrice, who has cooked for celebs around the world, says she opened up Raw and Roxy because there weren’t that many places in Cape Town she could go to eat “interesting things that were raw vegan and order fresh juices that actually tasted good”. Beatrice started eating a raw vegan diet to improve her health. When her doctor told

did you know? Raw foodists believe that raw foods, which have not been exposed to temperatures over 46 degrees C, are ‘alive’ and better for you.

her that hot flushes, depression, arthritis and bad eyesight were all just a part of getting older that she’d have to accept, she decided not to accept their advice. Lotions, potions, reading glasses and hormone replacement therapy were not for her. “I am over 50 and some people I meet my age have kind of resigned and given up, just because they are no longer young. “There are not that many role models for people 50 and over to look up to who are enjoying their age, doing new things, reinventing themselves, having fun, and looking good.” But that wasn’t going to stop Beatrice. It was around this time that she remembered her first encounter with the raw food movement. Living in Santa Barbara in the 80s she spent some time cooking for a well-known movie star whose passion for all things raw extended to feeding his dog only uncooked food. Looking for recipes and inspiration, Beatrice found Mimi Kirk online. Mimi Kirk is an

20

helping you live life well

American raw food activist in her late 70s who credits her health and good looks – she is gorgeous – to her raw food diet. “Mimi’s cookbooks are all pretty uncomplicated, which made easing into eating raw that much easier. As soon as I’d taken coffee, dairy, meat, bread, fish, and all processed and cooked food out of my diet it felt as though a fog lifted from my mind and I could think and literally see more clearly,” Beatrice explains. Soon Beatrice was putting together her own recipes, including delicious cakes, dehydrated chips and other treats. “I didn’t want to feel deprived, chewing on carrot sticks,” says Beatrice. And she certainly doesn’t – and neither do Raw and Roxy’s many fans.

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

Some of the highlights of Raw and Roxy’s menu are the Love Elixir, a divine combination of black grapes, pomegranate juice and rose water that’s been blessed by the Imam at a mosque just up the road, stripped baby marrow pasta served in a creamy cashew nut, capers and chilli sauce, and decadent sweet treats like nutty macaroons made from coconut, cacao butter and organic almond flakes.

Find Raw and Roxy at the Woodstock Coop, 363 Albert Rd, Cape Town. Call Beatrice on 079 599 6277 and visit her at the Biscuit Mill in Woodstock on Saturdays.

“Getting healthier is actually simple,” says Beatrice. “Even though I’m surrounded by food all day, I find that every time I reach a new level of health I naturally reach for simpler things with fewer ingredients. I might want to eat what I call a ‘mono’ meal for lunch, for example. Just one type of fruit, maybe. What could be easier than that?” Raw food is making a lot of people feel better, Beatrice believes. Not a day goes by where a customer doesn’t tell her what a difference making better food choices is making to their health. “Maybe their blood pressure has gone down since they changed their eating patterns. Maybe their tonsils are no longer swollen. Maybe eating raw has helped their bodies recover from a serious illness.” And maybe they’re just visiting Raw and Roxy for a really good meal and a brilliant vibe. Feeling awesome afterwards is a lucky side-effect.

RAW FOOD STAPLES The raw food diet focuses on uncooked food that is unprocessed and mostly organic. Raw food staples include:

• • • • • •

Raw fruits Raw vegetables Nuts Seeds Sprouted grains Superfoods

Is raw more? It’s believed that the enzymes in raw food help your body break it down so that it’s better absorbed. People who ‘go raw’ often say they feel more energised and many associate eating raw foods with overcoming disease. The raw food diet, particularly the raw vegan diet, has come under some fire for lacking essential nutrients like vitamins B12 and D, selenium, zinc, iron and omega fatty acids. If you’re considering going raw, chat with a dietician about it. They can help you work out a meal plan that suits your body’s nutritional needs.

" Happy Water

Water, it seems, is exquisitely sensitive to its environment and it has memory.

We are what we drink.

T

he human body is 70% water. You could say we are water. And we are, truly, what we drink. From a biochemical view, water is simply hydrogen and oxygen clumped together. But, from an holistic health and bio-physical perspective, there’s so much more to water.

It starts off with tap water, both impurities and memories are removed from the water. It’s then revitalized using light and music, alongside vortex and gemstone energies. These agents mimic nature and have the same effect as, for example, a bubbling forest stream dancing in the dappled sunlight.

Pristine, living water resonates with vibrational energy and has exquisite crystalline structures reflecting its vitality. It also contains a wide variety of minerals and trace elements. Water that is pure, energized, alkaline and minerally balanced can play a vital role in promoting health through:

Finally, the water is balanced with minerals and trace elements and returned to its natural, energized and happy state.

• • •

Restoring mineral balance and improving hydration Efficiently transporting nutrients and oxygen directly into the cells Faster detoxification and removal of waste products

After this, the water is spiked with subtle energies from flower essences and flavoured with organic flower extracts. One way of making flower essences is to put carefully selected flowers in bowls of water in the sun where the solar-floral energies diffuse into the water. For woodier plants, essences are extracted through boiling. Happywater flower essences are made from locally grown plants.

In effect, water is the central nervous system of our planet, transferring, through its memory, information about everything that is happening on Mother Earth. When water is purified (say, through reverse osmosis or distillation), its memory is erased and it becomes lifeless. We are delighted to announce a brand new Happy Water Café at the Wellness Café in Kloof street, Gardens. Mastermind Bruce Cohen is behind the concept of making this energised flower water, which uses intelligence from water wizards Dr Maseru Emoto and Viktor Schauberger both of whom uncovered the extraordinary nature of living water. Through patient study of the rivers flowing through the royal forests of which he was caretaker, Schauberger unlocked the mysteries that gives water its extraordinary life-force. Happywater uses the ideas of both Emoto and Schauberger. It’s served in glass bottles at an optimum temperature and has three different flavours: rose, hibiscus and orange.

22

FLOWER ESSENCE See which of the following three essences best relates to you. Each of them is made up of a blend of three flowers.

BALANCING ESSENCE Felicia (Felicia aethiopica) - indication: shifting moods, unfocused, indecisive, absentminded. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) - negative patterns of energy in the body, immune weakness. Wild Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) - fear, lack of energy.

ENERGISING ESSENCE Baeometra (Baeometra uniflora) - fatigue, exhaustion, depletion, feeling overwhelmed or disheartened. Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) - the Master Essence, harmonises and aligns all other energy centres. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sinensis) - lack of focus.

RELAXING ESSENCE Lavender (Lavendula officinalis) - panic, over-excitement, over-stimulation and insomnia. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) - stress and tension in muscles. Morning Glory (Ipomoea purpurea) - lack of harmony/balance

NOTE: a small amount of brandy is used to preserve the essences

did you know?

There is a distinct link between the quality of water and its crystal structure. Dr Emoto discovered that pristine water, like that from clear mountain streams produces harmonious crystalline patterns. Polluted water, even water exposed to hateful words or harsh sounds produces deformed crystals.

Happy, healthy, holiday snacking for kids

Holidays are synonymous with friends, family, and good food. Holiday foods aren’t always healthy, though, and many of us deviate from our careful eating plans over the festive season. December can be an especially tricky time when it comes to this. Chips, sweets, chocolates and cakes are very tempting – for adults and children alike. Wellness consulting dietician Judith Johnson shares her tips for making these holidays happy and healthy for the whole family. “Making sure your children eat healthily over the holidays can be a challenge, especially if they’re being cared for by others, or visiting friends who aren’t that conscious of good eating habits,” says Judith.

did you know? Sulphur dioxide, a common preservative, causes sensitivity in some people. This usually affects breathing and can aggravate asthma in asthmatics.

24

“We are continuously surrounded by a tempting array of colourful packaged foods, snacks and drinks, so we need to teach children how to choose the right foods to feel good. There is no doubt that feeding kids well makes them happier, healthier, and easier to look after. This is as much about what to avoid as what to include in their diets.”

Snacks – what to avoid Avoid commercial foods that are deep fried, or processed, that contain hydrogenated vegetable oils or fructose corn syrup, artificial flavours and colours and chemical preservatives. As a rule, crisps, energy bars, biscuits and cakes are a no-no. Dried fruit, which is often considered a healthy snack, may be preserved with sulphur dioxide, which is a potential allergen. Sugary snacks and foods with a high GI won’t keep children full for long. Judith’s tip: “If your children are having sugary snacks, give them something high in protein at the same time like a nut butter (if they can have nuts) or added fats. This will help keep their blood sugar levels even.” helping you live life well

What to look for in snack foods: • Choose foods that will satisfy. They should contain protein and some fat • They should be low in sugar and salt • Whole foods are better choices and are higher in fibre What if my child has allergies? If your child has allergies their symptoms may be aggravated by ingredients with wheat and gluten, sulphur dioxide and other preservatives, artificial flavourants and colourants, dairy and even sugar. “Symptoms of allergies can include mouth breathing, eczema, headaches and congestion, and even grumpiness,” says Judith. There are plenty of allergyfree snacks available in stores, including

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

Wellness Warehouse, and making your own from scratch using fresh ingredients is always a good idea. “It’s well worth trying to reduce any offending foods if your child shows these symptoms,” says Judith. It is also worthwhile seeing a healthcare practitioner for allergy testing if necessary.

Making snacking healthier Do give your children the foods they like. Adapt them to make them healthier, however, Judith advises. “Increase the fibre in your children’s snack foods, add more protein, and consider changing the source of fat.” Healthy sources of fats include nut butters, coconut oil, and olive and seed oils. These will help balance blood sugar. When the snacks you make are homemade it’s easier to control these ingredients. “Easy substitutes for popular snack foods include natural, preservative-free yoghurts, flavoured with bananas and/or berries instead of readymade sipping yoghurts, and recipe muffins adapted to include almond flour and oat bran as well as organic butter instead of margarine,” advises Judith. Always have preservative-free crisps onhand (root crisps are a good option) for little ones to snack on instead of regular chips that may be loaded with artificial additives. Fruit and nuts are also a good idea, as are kale chips, and hummus with raw veggies to dip. Being prepared is key.

Snacking suggestions Keep these snacks handy and your children won’t ever be deprived. In fact, you should be snacking on them too! • • •

• • • •

Ice lollies – homemade from fruit juice or try Smooze, new in-store Date balls (these are high in sugar, so enjoy in moderation) Smoothies made from almond milk, hemp protein, berries or other fruit (freeze and serve as an iced treat) Gluten-free muffins Flax crackers or rice cakes with avocado and cream cheese or nut butter Carrot sticks dipped in cream cheese and avocado Chicken strips cooked in tamari Cheese squares, baby tomatoes and meat balls on tooth picks Unsulphured dried fruit and nuts

The effects of unhealthy foods on children “Children who are given lollies, cakes, chocolates, chips, cool drinks, ice creams, and foods packed with sugar and artificial additives can have the following problems,” says Judith: • •

• •

A lowered appetite for healthy food at meal times Sugar highs with instant energy followed by energy slumps, lethargy and general grumpiness Weight gain due to unstable blood sugar levels Exposure to various allergens through colourings, flavourings and preservatives

This all contributes to an unsettled child who may have difficulty concentrating.

PREPARE TO BE FESTIVE By Dr Yesheen Singh

Traditionally the end of the year is fraught with potholes for the health and wellness conscious. And while we know the benefits of moderation, sometimes the temptation to indulge is overwhelming. MAKE IT A TREAT NOT A TRAIT

WORK IN SOME COMPENSATION Use the principle of homeostasis to balance out poor choices in one arena by making healthy choices in others. If you know you’re going to eat dessert with Christmas lunch, make sure your meals before and after lunch are healthy and alkalising, and go for a walk after lunch to help your body cope with digestive stress. If you experience the festive season as anxiety-ridden or as a trigger for mood fluctuations like depression, don’t let poor dietary choices make the mood triggers worse. For example if you are already mildly anxious about not having any New Years eve plans, eating sugary meals or snacks and skipping your forest walks makes it easier for you to become irritable or sad. Keep your health balanced by paying attention to all three areas: diet, activity and mental and emotional wellness.

SUPPORT YOUR BODY

Get Going In The Morning!

• Energy & Stamina • Treats Burnout • Combats Fatigue

FIND A COMMITMENT FRIEND

Lastly, don’t forget to invest in you-time during the season. It is all too easy to get drawn into friends and family time. While these connections are indeed life-giving, so too is the connection to self. Take an hour or two, once or twice a week, to do something for yourself, by yourself. This could be as simple as reading a book in bed, or as ‘complex’ as taking up an art or craft class. Make the time to care for yourself before you share your love with others.

Don’t be afraid to ‘ask for help’. If you know you’re about to have an unhealthy meal, too much to drink or a late night, help your body cope by using a supplement or two. For rich meals consider digestive enzymes and a stronger probiotic over the length of the festive season. If you’re drinking alcohol support your liver with herbals like Dandelion.

lovewell

If you do blow all your rules and indulge in a treat, see it as an exception and not the rule. Treats should be peppered inbetween healthy lifestyle and diet choices. Holiday season doesn’t mean your body takes a holiday from its need to live. It still needs good quality building blocks from your diet to feed it and replace the cells you lose on a daily basis. In fact, when you are indulging you speed up your rate of cellular turnover, which means you need more of the healthy stuff if you want new cells to be as competent as the old ones in keeping you healthy and alive. Eat for the body you want, not the one you have.

Even when eating mindfully and logging what we eat, we often don’t count the calories from the liquids we take in.

6 Drinking habits

to look out for

From gin to ginseng, smoothies to sodas, take note of your liquid intake, it might surprise you how many calories come from beverages.

H

ere are some ‘drinking habits’ that may be keeping you from your weight loss goals.

GREEN ALERT Green juices tick all the boxes when it comes to cleansing and nutrition but make sure you know what you’ve ordered. If it’s all fruit juice without the fibre it could equate to a veritable sugar bomb. Some ‘green’ juices are just that, even though they might be qualified with a shot of wheat grass or spirulina. Remember it’s the fibre in fruit that helps the body slow down the glycemic response.

TIP RATHER THAN BUYING PRE-PACKAGED JUICE, MAKE YOUR OWN BLEND WITH A MAJORITY OF VEGETABLES – ADD AN APPLE TO GIVE YOU A SWEET TASTE WITHOUT THE CALORIES. Nutribullet R1995

GREAT GIFT IDEA

NUTRI-BULLET gives you a blender juice. Blender juices have the benefit of fibre that cold-pressed juices are missing.

28

GREEN DREAM This weight loss green drink uses apples so there’s no need to use any type of sugar.

INGREDIENTS 2 SPINACH LEAVES
2 RED OR GREEN RIPE APPLES
 1/2 CUCUMBER
2 CELERY STALKS 1/2 PEELED LEMON 1/2 PEELED LIME

Juice or blend all the ingredients together in a juicer or a processor adding water if necessary.

WATER SHORTAGE Drink enough water. It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger and be tempted to eat something rather than drink. That means you’ll be taking in more calories than necessary. When you’re well hydrated you’re likely to perform better in your exercise session and go the extra mile. Most people don’t drink enough water. Our bodies get used to being dehydrated, and try to run on less than they need. Even two percent dehydration impairs performance and stops you from getting the full benefit of your exercise routine. An added benefit of water is that it’s an anti-oxidant - the hydrogen helps protect your cells from free radicals. helping you live life well

LIFESTRAW Perfect for the outdoor enthusiast.

GREAT GIFT IDEA Lifestraw Go Bottle R649

OVERDOSING THE ALCOHOL Alcohol is known for its high calorie content so if you’re going to indulge, choose with discernment. “The best choices are wine, champagne, or spirit with soda. Beer is last on the list as it’s full of carbs and specifically affects people sensitive to gluten. It can cause an inflammatory response that leads to large fluctuations in weight, and bloating.

GREAT GIFT IDEA Adoro Flirt Slim R59.99 Slim R59.99

bewell

integrative health

What’s more, if you’re after the buzz, you will have to drink more beer to get there. Alcohol has a way of lowering resistance to junk food. Any late night drinker will admit to craving slap chips or pizza. Research shows that alcohol has an effect on your brain chemistry and sets up cravings. The reason behind this hasn’t been proven but it’s possible the sugar in alcohol plays havoc with your blood sugar levels.

NOT SO SMOOTHIE Ingredients like nut butters, seeds and coconut oil make it easy to get up to 1000 calories in a single drink. Measure your ingredients carefully.

TIP ADD PROTEIN POWDER, IT FILLS YOU UP AND BALANCES YOUR GLYCEMIC RESPONSE – HELPING PREVENT SUGAR SPIKES.

ZERO CALORIE MISTAKE Even though your label might say ‘diet’, or ‘zero calories’ these drinks can have an effect on the body that does the opposite of slimming you down. Besides the taste buds in the mouth receptive to the sweet taste, we also have sweet taste receptors on the lining of the digestive tract. When stimulated, they produce insulin, which is a fat storing hormone. Even though the sugar is substituted it can still trigger a hormonal response. This means it’s not really about the calories you take in but about how your body responds. Because diet drinks have an intense sweet taste, they contribute to re-setting your taste buds and you end up needing more to feel satisfied.

COFFEE CULPRIT It’s not so much the coffee but what we add to it that’s calorie dense. Spoons of sugar, honey or sweetener, syrup flavourant, cream and dairy clocks up when you have more than a cup a day. One cup a day can provide a great boost and sharpen your mental capacity but more than two cups can tax your adrenals. Because coffee is a diuretic, too much of it can be dehydrating and make your body hold onto water. This isn’t a great effect when you’re wanting to lose weight.

HOSTESS IDEA Take a packet of Wellness Organic Coffee to your next dinner party. It’s a great gift that anyone will love.

Flowers, with their unforgettable fragrance and vibrant colours, can dramatically change our disposition and uplift our spirits.

The power of Flowers

Flowers have been called the earth’s laughter, and a healing agent for the soul. On every level they uplift, heal and delight. Flowers bring more emotional, physical, and spiritual beauty into life. It’s surprisingly easy to grow them and the rewards are immense. We look into the qualities and properties of different flower varieties, and the effect of colour on mood and disposition.

did you know? A recent study at Rutgers University revealed that flowers improve emotional health, triggering happy emotions and a feeling of life satisfaction. Ancient Egyptians believed the spirit or essence of a flower contained magical healing powers given by the deities. Their fragrances too, came from the gods so that mortals might become more perfect by absorbing the scent.

32

S

ince the fragrance and colours of flowers extend into the energetic realm, they can help with metaphysical issues. Flower therapy can deepen your spiritual practice and open your psychic abilities. In their natural state flowers heal but also as essential oils, perfumes and flower essences. One way to absorb the therapeutic properties of flowers is through a form of sensory perception called psychometry. This is when, through touch, you acquire impressions in the form of images, words and feelings that give you insight into the cause of your emotions and ways of improving the situation. Connecting with flowers through touch automatically triggers self-healing powers. Smelling the fragrance is another way of absorbing healing energy from flowers. helping you live life well

Psychometrists believe we are attracted to particular flowers because intrinsically we recognise an energy pattern in the flower that will restore harmony and regulate any vibrations that are out of synch. This works on a physical and emotional level.

Colour of Healing Flowers are divine vessels of healing, and we can use Flower Therapy to work with different blossoms. Each variety has a different ‘personality’ and vibration that promotes physical and emotional wellness — based on their appearance, fragrance, essence, colours, and energies — to address specific needs and desires.

Plant a specific ‘colour healing’ garden using flowers with qualities that suit your restoration purpose. Here is a list to guide you. White heals body, mind and spirit at all levels. It’s a natural pain reliever, increasing and maintaining energy levels and relieving depression and inertia. It’s good for bones and teeth and removes negativity from the body’ s energy field.

Greenery and unopened buds strengthen the heart, lungs and respiratory system and help fight infections and viruses. They counter panic attacks and addictions and are good for tissue and cell growth.

Blue is a natural antiseptic that’s soothing and cooling. It lowers blood pressure and slows a racing pulse. It relieves headaches and migraines, eyestrain, earache and sore throats.

Purple heals on all levels, especially Red is an instant energy boost and stimulates the whole system. It kickstarts a sluggish immune system. Being linked to reproduction and fertility it relieves menstrual problems and sexual dysfunction, especially impotence.

Orange gently energises and relieves exhaustion, strengthening a weak pulse. It soothes aching limbs, helps with allergies, and relieves kidney problems. It also helps menstrual and muscle cramps.

spiritual. It helps with releasing past events. Physical ailments like allergies, asthma, sleep disorders, eye, ear, nose and skin problems and migraines all benefit from purple petals. As a natural sedative it eases neuroses and obsessions and can help with childbirth.

Pink is good for adolescent girls, pregnant and menopausal women. It relieves ear and gland disorders, head pains and psychosomatic illnesses. It also helps disorders in children and babies.

Brown increases primal strength and Yellow calms digestion and helps balance the metabolism. It stimulates the nervous system, balances emotions and helps with oversensitive reactions. It also eases eczema and skin problems, and reduces anxiety and stress-related ailments.

relieves disorders connected with feet, legs, hands and the skeleton. It absorbs pain and sorrow, all back pain and is good for large intestine healing.

IF FLOWERS COULD SPEAK

dandelion seeds are great to work with; they’re especially good for making your dreams come true.

Flower Therapy is based upon nature’s healing abilities, similar to naturopathic medicine. Like the herbal treatments in naturopathic medicine, flowers can be used to create potent healing effects. They’re especially good with emotions and feelings. Doreen Virtue who has a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology, and has appeared on programmes like Oprah and CNN, gives us 7 common flowers and their healing properties.

Healing Message: “I’d like to help you rise above lower-energy emotions like bitterness and anger. I can also help with manifesting your wishes.”

AFRICAN VIOLET

Healing Message: “Keep me close, and breathe in my delicate perfume. I’ll help you forget about all the stress and worry you once felt. Now it’s time for you to enjoy the blissful stage of your life.”

African violets are wonderful for healers because they’re excellent at cleaning old, heavy energies. Besides cleaning the psychic body, they’re also great at cleaning spaces, like homes and offices. Healing Message: “I’ll cleanse away the old and give life to the new. This is a long-overdue process. I can transmute the lower forms of energy in your body and home and return them to a positive state of peace and love.”

DAISY Let the daisy take care of you and lift the stress from your shoulders. Daisies deliver peace to your life so you can focus on what’s important. Healing Message: “You need to simplify. You’ve got so much going on, and you’re spread too thin. I’m surrounding you and giving you the opportunity to take away the drama and stress.”

DANDELION The yellow flower can heal anger, resentment, bitterness, and jealousy. The characteristic white, snowball-like

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul Jacobson owner of Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition

AWAKEN YOUR YOGA DOG Through meditation, yoga and controlled breathing we can control our mental state, wellbeing and behaviour. We are able to put aside our daily worries and stress. We are relaxed. If you were a dog or cat, how would you control your breathing? How would you live in the moment, relax and revel in life’s jewels. Well, our companion animals are inherently happy beings and naturally breathe calmly and controlled. They are our true gurus. That is, unless on a physiological level, their state of wellbeing is altered. Diet plays a very important role in their state of relaxation and resultant breathing patterns. Unfortunately, most households feed their animals highly processed and chemically laden food high in carbohydrates. This is an abrupt change from their natural diet. High carb and sugar diets affect their physical state, ability to breath naturally and their wellbeing. No one will feel comfortable sitting down to meditate after drinking a can of Red Bull, cup of coffee or bottle of Coca Cola. The same applies to our companion animals, who surely cannot expect to behave normally after consuming high carb energy diets. One need only follow Professor Tim Noakes writings on high carb diets to understand the negative impact it has on health and wellbeing. High carb diets spike your insulin levels uncontrollably. This causes inflammation and certainly affects breathing and behaviour. Quick breaths bring on hyper activeness, hyper-tension and anxiety. High carb diets have the same impact on our pets. Most of our pets and certain breeds in particular, already have too much energy and are hyper-active. A kibble diet will exacerbate energy levels, the result being that our pets become out of control, less disciplined and generally misbehaved. Hyper-active pets are likely to chew themselves and show signs of irritation and discomfort. Our companion animals once lived in bliss, in sync with nature and were the masters of controlled breathing. Now, rapid breathing dictates their behavior and their state of being. They are no longer the masters of their own wellbeing. Our natural Yogis are now an explosive bundle of uncontrolled energy. Your pet’s metabolism is not designed to consume food that is over-processed, cereal and carbohydratebased and that contains a variety of additives, preservatives, flavourants and colourants. KEEP YOUR GARDEN ALIVE Keep your garden alive when you go on holiday. Richard Morris from Starke Ayres tells us how. KEEP IT MOIST

FERTILIZE

Covering your garden soil and pot soil with a thick layer of mulch or compost will reduce evaporation by up to 30%.

Worm tea fertilizer is a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers and it’s full of active bacteria and micro-elements to improve soil and plant health.

An advanced bio-degradable, organic liquid called Hydretain forms a skin around grass roots and reduces its ability to dehydrate if the surrounding soil is dry. Products like Saturaid or Stockosorb absorb water and on hot days slowly release water back into the soil. Both are great for hanging baskets or Teracotta pots.

EASY IRRIGATION Use a battery controlled timer fitted on your tap and attached to a sprinkler, soaker hose or irrigation system. Battery timers save water and still work when Eskom doesn’t.

DE-BUG Check your plants for signs of bugs and remove them as soon as you can. Red spider infestations are rife at the moment and will defoliate and kill plants in weeks. Check for tell-tale fine webs under leaves. Wooly white fly and scale affects citrus plants, you know they’re there from the sticky leaves. For snails rather than using poison, use Ferramol Snail bait. It’s nontoxic to animals and humans.

TIP ENCOURAGE BENEFICIAL BUGS LIKE SPIDERS, WASPS, FROGS AND LADYBIRDS. THEY’LL EAT MOST OF YOUR HARMFUL INSECTS AND PESTS.

Nitrosol and Nutrifeed are our favourite non-smelly liquid fertilizer applications for indoor or patio containers.

HEALTHY LAWN Leave lawns a little longer as protection. Water them thoroughly and use a good organic fertilizer that will feed them with slow release nutrients like 3.15 or 6.3.4. Look out for patches of dry or dying grass. Right now lawn caterpillar, Black Maize beetle and cutworm are prevalent. Mix washing powder with water in a bucket and put this on affected areas. To see what is in the soil, call Starke Ayres to advise you further.

Experience

Christmas AT STARKE AYRES

At the end of every year Starke Ayres go all out towards creating a beautifully decorated instore Christmas theme. Larger than life Santa’s, bells, holly, nativity themes, tinsel and more offer an incredible experience of Christmas. This is a must-see for kids and adults alike. Come and experience traditional Christmas festivities at Starke Ayres and prepare to be delighted. In both branches they have a wonderful coffee shop that serve teas, breakfasts and light lunches.

PONDS & WATER FEATURES A pond cleaning agent controls algae that tends to overrun ponds and potentially damages or breaks pumps. Probio Pond Clear is an effective natural probiotic in liquid or powder form and does not harm fish or frogs.

PLANT IN ADVANCE Put some organically grown starter plants in your garden to eat when you get back from holiday. Try out organic asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cucumber, pumpkin, parsley, patty pans, tomatoes, beans baby spinach and carrots.

I have to confess, I’d never been to Tulbagh before, I seriously didn’t know how, up to now, I’d missed it. You get the sense of being in an animated Disneyland movie with exquisite butterflies and birds in brilliant colours flying through the valley, mountains with clear blue waterfalls, trees and fields and flowers popping up everywhere.

We stayed in a tree house at Vindoux Guest Farm and Spa – the perfect place from which to explore. Vindoux has stunning views over the orchards and Saronsberg Mountains.

Besides the four tree houses separated by a path of trees, they have a luxury selfcatering tree lodge, self-catering cottages and a beautiful Spa with fynbos inspired healing journeys. There’s so much to do, you can laze by the pool, fish in the dam or do a ‘wine by bike’ tour of the many wine farms close by. It’s a family run fruit farm with the added bonus of zebra, springbok and black wildebeest, which you can watch from your tree house. The honeymoon tree house has a petal trail across the bed, matching luxurious gowns, a spa bath and other essentials like champagne and chocolates. Breakfast is delivered at any time you want, and you can have it in bed or on the balcony. Become a culinary master of sustainable fish, get first hand wisdom for a truly healthy life and invest in music for all purposes. We’ve chosen three albums to live your life by – whether it’s peacefulness, creativity or an addictive beat you’re after, we’ve got you covered.

Star Fish by Daisy Jones (Quivertree)

Daisy Jones takes you on an epic road trip to meet the farmers, conservationists, fishermen and scientists set to protect the top ten fish in the years to come. Her bid to educate readers on the plight of the oceans is punctuated with humour and fascinating information. Besides that, the recipes at the end of each chapter are very tempting. An abundance of useful information includes how to buy a snoek and make samosas out of it. Recipes steer the reader towards swapping white fish and prawns for meatier (yellowtail), oilier (sardines) or slurpier (mussels). A chart at the end of the book provides green alternatives to orange- and red-listed fish – both local and overseas varieties.

Go Natural – Wisdom For Healthy Living by Johan Jacobs (Go Natural Media)

His extensive research explains the reason for physical degeneration, accelerated ageing and unnecessary weight gain, he also looks at solutions to these issues. Go Natural exposes the hidden dangers lurking in our mouths, food and environment contributing to dis-ease conditions. Johan’s book provides comprehensive information on all the different aspects of life and offers hundreds of easy and better choices we can make.

Piano Nocturnes - Volume One by Jeremy de Tolly

40

After spending many life times as a recluse meditating in the caves of the Himalayas, Sadhu Sensi decided to come down from the mountains to spread the wisdom and knowledge of the East to the West, through music. He has played in many of the top festivals and collaborated with distinguished artists. His sounds range from dub, downtempo, psy ambient blues to experimental house, electronica, and techno. His album Owl Medicine is inspirational, easy listening with deep spiritual undertones. To order contact sadhusensi@gmail.com

This album comprises six tracks of ambient solo piano music recorded on a Bösendorfer grand piano in Cape Town. As Peter van Cooten on Ambientblog says, “It’s music designed for the background of your life. I like to put it on at home… it makes me slow down. It’s probably an aural sedative of some kind. And a dose of Nocturnes is cheaper and healthier than getting stoned or taking a Valium.” You can be sure there are no jarring sounds, cadenzas or crescendos to disturb your sense of peace and concentration. Whether you’re being creative, wanting to sleep or need a serene background track, these gentle piano sounds will serve you well.

When Johan Jacobs was diagnosed with an incurable and dreaded disease he went all out to find the root cause of the problem.

Owl Medicine by Sadhu Sensi

“I used to fall asleep and wake up to it every day. I like being around it and I like how it makes me feel.” Mike D. Available from info@jeremydetolly.com helping you live life well

Azimuth by Jorge Carlos Arrigone

Azimuth is a sophisticated fusion of electro acoustic grooves with deep bass lines and rich tonal qualities. Apart from some special guest artists, Jorge Carlos plays all the instruments live on all the tracks. His influences include William Orbit, Thievery Corporation, Leftfield, Kruder and Dolfmeister, Boards of Canada and Tosca. This is the perfect soundtrack for chilled summer days, an album you can listen to again and again. It’s available from Itunes under Azimuth Jorge Carlos

iving, especially when we don’t expect anything in return means improving our psychological health. Firstly, there’s the creative aspect of determining what will bring joy to the recipient. People get an emotional boost when searching for the right gift. It requires thinking about the person, their passions, loves and quirks. It’s also a way to express your feelings about someone. It reinforces appreciation and acknowledgment of that person. You then get a sense of satisfaction when your recipient responds. If you do something positive, positive psychology says you attract more positive. Although people don’t always give just to get something back, many times we think ‘if I do a good deed, something good will happen for me.’ When giving a lot we anticipate that the world will be good back to us.

friend will involve thoughtfulness; a romantic gift might involve sentiment; and giving to a colleague might include respect. Although gifting is generally positive, choosing the right option and bearing the cost can be a source of stress. Most times though people appreciate thoughtfulness over price and there are many ways to acknowledge others without having to purchase something. Acts of service, written cards or notes with words of kindness, or dinner parties and activities are all good ways to share the holiday spirit without exchanging gifts. Extending the spirit of giving to people beyond your family or friends is also highly beneficial. Here are some ideas.

BECOME AN ALTRUIST 1. Visit someone who is lonely Visiting someone who is lonely is a beautiful gift – it doesn’t have to be someone you know well. People in hospital or old age homes are often extremely grateful for some company.

6. Plug into a forum Create a space where people can post their needs. Other people who feel like giving can always refer to that. A website based in America www.2hands.org is a very successful one. Countless people have their needs met from this website. 7. Recognise people in service These are people you deal with in your daily life like tellers and garbage men. Simply remembering their names or taking an interest in them is a great way to spread joy. 8. Make family time If you know a family that struggles financially, think of buying them tickets to the theatre, giving them your timeshare or a voucher for meals at a restaurant.

2. Create spontaneous acts of kindness Adopt an attitude of giving and look out for ways you can do this during your day; every moment you are out in the world is a chance to help. 3. Be sneaky There’s something delightful about giving on the sly. Imagining someone’s reaction when they find an anonymous present or an act of service is very rewarding. You could leave groceries on someone’s doorstep; clean up someone’s space; pay for something in advance (a restaurant bill), or leave a note saying how much you appreciate someone.

9. Give something up Rather than accepting gifts at Christmas time, ask anyone who might want to give you a gift to rather give it to a charity. You could pick a charity and take all the gifts there together. This is a real feel-good activity that will boost your mood and help you have gratitude for your own life.

4. Support a Shelter Off load stuff you don’t need anymore at a shelter or charity. Or get kids to donate one or more of their toys to a children’s hospital. They love playing a role in making another child happier. You could also make up hampers for all the homeless people in your neighbourhood.

5. Give compliments and love Giving a compliment is just as much a present as something material. Acknowledging a homeless person, listening to their story and learning their name is also a great way to give.

If you happen to be wandering around Kloof street in Cape Town on a Wednesday afternoon you will see an inordinate amount of homeless people congregating at the church at 55 Kloof street. From 4pm they sit shoulder to shoulder along the pavements waiting in anticipation for the events of the evening to unfold. Most of them have never had a home to live in. They sleep in parks and on the streets sometimes looking in garbage bins for food, begging or working as car parkers. On a lucky night they might be able to afford the R40 odd it costs to sleep in a shelter. Johnny Papadakis is a well-known figure around Cape Town, mostly for his role in the entertainment business. What many people don’t know about Johnny is what he does during the day. He has been highly

instrumental at founding a feeding scheme and church for homeless people. Together with Bread for Life he has grown his support for homeless people up to a network of about 400 members. Besides providing meals, he also assists in getting identity documents. Johnny is well known at the home affairs office, many of his members don’t even have birth certificates. “They feel such a sense of pride and legitimacy when they get I.D’s,” says Johnny. “There’s very little you can do in the world without formal identification. Johnny also takes time to find out about his people, who they are, where they sleep, what they feel. “Imagine existing in this world where everyone looks at you with distaste or irritation and where you feel rejection a hundred times a day. That’s what these people experience every day of their lives.”

“Many people would like to help but don’t know how, still more have helped homeless people and had a bad experience.”

“You must understand that people who live in survival mode can be very manipulative and it takes understanding to know how to help them effectively.” Johnny jokes about writing a manual with instructions and guidance on how to help, without being taken advantage of. It’s something I think would be highly valuable. We are so used to seeing homeless people (there are about 5000 in and around Cape Town), we don’t always stop to think how and why this person became homeless. A spokesperson from a shelter called the Haven says people become homeless from a series of events. For example, the death of a child, parent or spouse may leave a person so grief stricken that it leads to more difficulties. Loss of employment from nonattendance or poor performance, followed by the loss of their car or home because they don’t have an income. This downward spiral continues until the person migrates to living on the streets, having lost all connection to their former lives.

Other factors that lead people to become homeless include: •

Suffering severe emotional trauma or grief

Being unemployed, insolvent, or having no or low income

Escaping physical abuse or lifethreatening situations

Losing everything as a result of a disaster like fire or flooding

Suffering from mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse

Being a refugee or asylum seeker

Suffering from a physicallychallenging disability

Being an ex-soldier or prisoner who was removed from society for a long time

These are only some of the reasons why people become homeless. If you would like to donate, help or volunteer email: johnnypapadakis@gmail.com. If you would like to drop off clothing, food or blankets you can do so at 5pm on any Wednesday at 55a Kloof street, Gardens. Find them on www.facebook.com/Bread4LifeCT. A woman’s being is rhythmical like the ocean – there is a high tide and a low tide.

hen looking at women’s bodies in their oceanic rhythmical sense, low tide is when we are premenstrual and menstruating. High tide is the follicular and ovulatory phase.

LOW TIDE frame of mind PRE-MENSTRUAL The pre-menstrual time of the low tide invites us to slow down and listen to our emotions. If you are feeling anger and irritation, you can use those emotions constructively to show you where or how you aren’t taking care of your needs and boundaries. Listening to your emotions and reflecting on them is a perfect opportunity to clarify your needs, re-define your boundaries and move out of reaction mode. It allows an opportunity to speak up from a place of self-respect and self-care. The ratio of estrogen and progesterone in this phase makes you notice things you didn’t see before. This is a good time to do administrative or detail driven work and organise your desk and files. Support your body by taking Vitamin B and Magnesium supplements to stave off sugar cravings. Make sure you eat enough complex carbohydrates to stabilise serotin and dopamine levels in the brain – this will help prevent mood swings.

women to take time to replenish and recharge the body and psyche in this phase. It’s a time we can experience the deep receptivity and openness of the feminine. Plan to have fewer social engagements and ask for support where you need it. Avoid driving yourself relentlessly. Have a hearty broth ready cooked and stored in the freezer for this stage. Pause for a few moments every day and let your eyes rest on something beautiful. It’s a time that asks us to be mindful of how we do things. I remember when I had to fly to Johannesburg for a very busy schedule of meetings. The trip coincided with my menstruation which at that time was very heavy. I asked my publisher to book me into a bed and breakfast with a beautiful garden. I kept all my meetings but chose to have them in the garden as a way of supporting my body and psyche. Similarly, someone from my Wise Cycle Mentorship course who was menstruating fairly heavily had a hectic business programme visiting multiple stores. She remembered that the strength of this phase is receptivity, and decided to listen deeply to her employees, gather their problems and address the issues when back at head office. Her trip was more successful and less exhausting than it would have been had she tried solving problems immediately in her usual driven way. Communication between the right and left brain is more active during this phase and you will be more in touch with intuitive or gut-messages. Be receptive to this wisdom.

HIGH TIDE frame of mind

Wellness High Potency Vitamin B Complex 60’s R119.99

MENSTRUAL Your menstrual phase invites you to slow down even more and plan your life to accommodate the intense process your body is involved with – releasing the lining of your uterus. Both Alisa Vitti, author of Woman Code and Christiane Northrup, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, emphasise the necessity for

In the follicular and ovulatory phase we are in high tide: energetic, creative and social. It is a time to initiate projects, activate your imagination and manifest your plans. At this phase it’s easy to form new neuroconnections in the brain so creativity flows easily. The ovaries are energetically the seat of our creativity and if you have any problems with your ovaries, ask yourself: Am I doing what I love? How is my creativity flowing? Am I driving myself too hard? When you are ovulating it is an ideal time for connecting and for important conversations. So if you wish to ask your boss for a raise, wait until you are ovulating, it’s sure to be a yes. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Embodied time management means doing what is appropriate for the energetic and hormonal tone of each phase. This allows you to sustain your energy throughout the month and use the feminine wisdom that each phase brings.

did you know? According to Alisa Vitti, author of Woman Code, there are 5 causes of hormonal problems in women: Interestingly, one of these is a lifestyle that works against the pattern of your menstrual cycle, the other one’s are: Mismanaged blood sugar; Overextension of the adrenal glands; Congestion in the eliminatory pathways; and Separation from your feminine energy.

Keriesa Botha is a counsellor and life coach and teaches the Wise Cycle Mentorship Course. This course guides women to live in harmony with their cycles and their feminine energy.

Her courses run over three weekends stretched over three months and involve peer learning, storytelling, process art, reflective writing, movement and Pyschophonetics.

Nicole Meyer, mother of one says, ‘I never realised the underlying reason for my fertility issues was the way my body dealt with stress. Acupuncture has helped my body manage stress better and this has allowed me to fall pregnant naturally.’

NATURAL FERTILITY Capetonian based Chinese medicine practitioners Simone Kredo and Vicky Hindmarch have been using the principles of Chinese medicine to help women fall pregnant. In this article they offer insight into how Chinese Medicine approaches infertility and show that it’s possible to nurture natural fertility. They report.

did you know? Chinese Medicine developed at a time when people were very connected to the earth. They saw and documented the natural cycles and impulses of each season and recognised that these cycles are mirrored in our physiological processes. They developed the theory of yin and yang and the Five Elements. They detailed a theory of how the organ systems supported and nourished each other and how they keep each other in check.

50

I

n our world, there’s nothing more wonderful than seeing the joy of a couple as they cuddle their newly born baby, especially when fertility hasn’t come easily. Adjusting lifestyle habits and fuelling your natural ability to nurture fertility is sometimes all it takes to create a fertile ground for conception. Generally a healthy person is someone who has found their unique rhythm in life. They have a vision, they eat well, sleep well and exercise enough; they can follow their passions, but are disciplined enough to do what’s necessary. They attend to relationships but make time to reflect and rejuvenate. This is an active, fruitful and dynamic balance.

helping you live life well

Fertility is also an aspect of health and wellness. Genetically, in both men and women, you will have inherited a constitution that has a certain potential. There is also a relationship and rhythmical balance between your blood system and energy system that is important to your potential to be fertile. The food we eat and air we breathe provide raw ingredients for our glands to make reproductive hormones like oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Exercise, nourishing sleep and a balance between work and play helps the nervous system self-regulate and give the glands appropriate instructions. If the genetic reserves are abundant; the reproductive structures are sound; and lifestyle supports health, then fertility will naturally follow.

lovewell

eco mom & baby

If fertility does not come naturally, Chinese Medicine provides a useful map to follow. It is important to unpack your whole life story. This is done in conjunction with the Five Element theory which mirrors the bodily systems with nature’s elements. In this theory fertility is part of the water element; digestion is part of the earth element; repair and defence is part of the metal system and detoxification the wood element. Circulation and hormonal imbalance is part of the fire element. An imbalance in any one organ system will impact on another organ system. A fertility issue (symptom in the Water Element) could be caused by a poor diet, or poor digestion and assimilation of nutrients (Earth Element) or an imbalance in the defence and repair system (Metal Element) or difficulties in detoxification (Wood element) or a circulatory and hormonal system imbalance (Fire Element) or an imbalance in the nervous system (Water element) or a combination of several of these.

In women, it is possible to diagnose an imbalance by observing the monthly menstrual cycle. The only way to tell if a man’s sperm is healthy is to have a laboratory analysis.

Once a practitioner has a case history, patterns and imbalances in any of the core physiological processes or Elements are revealed. The practitioner will feel the pulse and look at the tongue to see these patterns in more detail. It may also be appropriate to run blood tests or refer to specialist diagnostic work. Response to treatment also provides information.

Low numbers of sperm may reflect a deficiency pattern.

The aim is to create a personalised picture of where a patient is now and where they have come from. The symptom is infertility; the aim is to treat the root cause and in so doing, nurture a patient back to fertility.

Carla noticed when she came off the pill, the time between her cycles were longer than four weeks, her bleed was very light and over in 2 days. She noticed she often felt tired, weepy, depressed and little anxious for no apparent reason. Carla is suffering from a Deficiency pattern.

Carla’s healing journey focused on nourishment. She focused on good food and enough rest. She ate regular meals rich in proteins, dark green vegetables and good quality oils. She made sure she got 8 – 10 hours of sleep a night. She stopped running marathons and took up restorative exercise like Tai Qi and nature walks.

In broad terms, infertility can be framed in three categories: Deficiency, Stagnation & Excess. We have simplified these categories for ease of use, but as physician Hsu Ta-ch’un (1757) said,

ANXIETY & FATIGUE RUINING YOUR PERFORMANCE?

Margaret reported irregular menstrual cycles, tension headaches, pre-menstrual irritability, bloating and a feeling of relief when her period finally started. She felt more tired before her period but felt better after exercise. She is suffering from a Stagnation pattern. Slow movement of sperm may reflect a stagnation pattern. Margaret came to understand that her system needed movement. She responded well to a diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits with moderate amounts of protein and good quality fats. She eliminated toxins like sugar, alcohol and coffee. She learned to recognise when she was becoming stressed at work and committed to learning how to delegate. She joined a cycling club and did regular cardiovascular exercise. She made sure she got 7-8 hours of sleep to support her healing process. It took only three months before Margaret fell pregnant naturally.

EXCESS Thandi reported short cycles with spotting and very heavy painful bleeds. She was having difficulty in her relationship because of her mood swings, bloating, headaches and irritability. Despite all her good intentions she could not resist her sugar cravings.

A spermiogram that shows abnormal sperm forms may reflect an excess pattern. Thandi was fed up of feeling awful most of the time and was highly motivated to change. She eliminated sugar, dairy and wheat. She focused on salads and vegetables with medium amounts of good quality proteins and fats. She started running and found she thrived on competitive cardiovascular exercise. Her sleep and moods improved very quickly. Over nine months Thandi’s cycle normalised, her relationship improved and she felt good about life and herself. The changes required a huge commitment and will power and at times she would give in to pre-menstrual sugar cravings. But Thandi’s perseverance paid off and after a year she fell pregnant naturally. These three women also received regular acupuncture treatment and Chinese herbal medicine. Chinese Medicine also offers an excellent way to prepare for conventional fertility treatment like intra-uterine insemination, in vitro fertilisation and egg donation.

Coconut oil is a fabulous sun care option – use it to coat your hair to prevent dryness, to nourish your skin and to treat sunburn.

Sunny SUGGESTIONS By Nicole Sochen

Summer is here and the time to enjoy SA’s great outdoors. But while you’re having fun in the sun, your hair and skin will be needing a little extra TLC. Here are some easy ideas to help you look and feel great.

The fuss about SPF SPF helps prevent against dry skin, sunburn and ultimately skin cancer. But heat can make normal skin particularly sensitive which could be aggravated by SPF. Look for natural and non-irritating UVA/UVB filters like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. If your skin turns oily in the summer, skip the SPF moisturizer for a super light serum and cover your skin with an all-natural mineral powder with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide for a smooth, matte finish. Mineral powder is a great alternative to thick SPF moisturizers and provides as good, if not better, coverage when it comes to sun rays.

Aloe vera gel - for taking care of sunburn and nourishing the skin. A bottle of water – filtered water in glass or BPA-free plastic, or a bottle fitted with its own filter for on-thego filling. For flavoured water, freeze cubes of fruit like strawberries or grapes.

For shiny, luscious locks blend a tablespoon of banana, avocado and olive oil (2 tsps). Blend together and massage onto your hair from roots to tips. Leave for 30 minutes. Shampoo well, rinse with apple cider vinegar and cool water.

For glowing, hydrated skin use a mixture 1/2 an avo, 1tbsp of honey and 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar. Blend together, apply to face and leave for 15 minutes.

Kitchen cosmetics Cooling, cleansing & moisturizing •

Face-spritzer: fill a small spritzer bottle with filtered water and a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Lavender or rose water will keep you cool and smelling fresh at the same time.

Rosewater, olive oil or coconut oil can cleanse without stripping the skin of natural oils.

Cucumber blended into a paste it can be used as a cleanser or to treat sunburn. To remove tough make-up, add a bit of milk or olive oil.

Hero products for the heat •

Coconut oil – use it to coat your hair to prevent dryness, to nourish your skin and to treat sunburn.

The beauty power of milk was known to royal women thousands of years ago - use it on the skin for hydration. Add a tablespoon of almond oil for removing make-up. Yoghurt can be used as a moisturizer and for relieving sunburn. helping you live life well

For beautifying •

Dip an eyeliner brush lightly in activated charcoal and apply as eyeliner.

Hibiscus cheek stain: pour half a tablespoon of boiling water over two teaspoons of dried hibiscus. Stir and allow to steep until dark pink. Using a cotton ball, press the liquid onto your cheeks for a perfectly pretty rosy hue.

Create homemade bronzing powder with a blend of 1 tbsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp nutmeg, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, and 2 tsp cornstarch or powdered

sugar. Keep in a small jar with a lid. Adjust the mixture to suit your skin tone. •

Argan oil – for anti-ageing, smoothing and even-toned skin, look out for hair, body and face ranges.

4 steps to a naturallooking, sun-kissed look 1. Choose a bronzer that’s similar to the colour of your chest and arms. The goal is to create a seamless transition between your face and the rest of your body.

did you know? Skin cells that are strengthened and nourished internally with real food and water will benefit from interacting with the sun. Well-nourished skin responds better to sunlight, and sun-ripened food is more nutritious.

2. Using a bronzer brush apply the powder where the sun normally hits your face (forehead, cheeks, nose and chin). 3. Finish with a light dusting on your neck and ears. 4. Check the sides of your face to make sure the bronzer is well-blended.

Don’t leave home without these handbag essentials: •

Some basic make-up: The goal is to glow, not glisten. All you need is a lipstick, gloss or lip balm with SPF, oil-absorbing papers or powder to handle the shine, waterproof mascara to avoid leaving the water with panda-eyes, and a bronzer to fake being kissed by the sun in all the right places.

Protective goodies: SPF – apply before getting dressed and don’t forget your décolletage, ears, back of your hands and back of your neck. Sunglasses with good quality lenses will guard those baby blues from the harsh sun and keep fine lines at bay. A hat will prevent sunburn and keep hair off your skin which could result in break-outs.

Stay fresh: a mini-deodorant, face spritzer, hand sanitizer and facial wipes.

Alternatively, try this recipe to thicken brows and stimulate growth: INGREDIENTS ALOE VERA GEL SOAKED FENUGREEK SEEDS ONION JUICE

Mix a small portion of aloe vera gel, soaked fenugreek seeds and onion juice together into a paste. Rub this into your eyebrows daily. Do it when you have an hour to spare at home as it doesn’t smell great.

RAISE YOUR BROWS Eyebrows are a very important feature of the face, besides keeping dirt and dust off the eyes, they frame the eyes and can make a distinct difference in how you look. Overplucked eyebrows, after time don’t always grow back with the same intensity. That’s why it’s good to take care of eyebrows and stimulate their growth. Do this by lightly massaging your eyebrows with either olive oil or castor oil as a daily habit. This helps stimulate follicles to produce more hair.

If your eyes need more drama, you may want to darken your eyebrows. Rather than using chemical laden dyes, try henna or mix your own with a mixture of 1/2 tbsp. clear aloe vera gel and 1/2 tbsp. activated charcoal (available at good health stores). Simply clean out an old mascara bottle and add your mixture. Dip the mascara brush and apply.

Seventy metres of bike path has rows of crystalline silicon solar cells encased by concrete and covered with a thin layer of tempered glass. Because the road panels can’t be adjusted to face the sun they produce 30% less energy than traditional solar panels but the good thing is, there’s no shortage of road to solarise.

NAKED TRUTH

Walking around naked is proven to be a beneficial practice in more ways than one. We’re not talking about frightening people in public but about being comfortable with yourself around the house or in nature. Habitually, we cover ourselves up and sometimes don’t realize to what extent we hold onto negative perceptions of ourselves. Walking around naked helps create body acceptance and encourages feeling more at ease with yourself just as you are. But there are reasons why we feel uneasy in our skin. Consider that many businesses rely on people to be dissatisfied with their bodies. That way they can sell products that promise to improve them. Someone who recently came to love her body pointed out that, “Shaming is nothing more than a business and it’s a trap you fall into, modern day society tells us we’re not enough – that we need this body or that product to be accepted, to be loved.” The real truth is hardly anyone’s body is near perfect. In Scandinavian countries skinnydipping and bare saunas are traditional. Seeing other naked bodies makes us realize we are just as imperfect as the next person and can make us more comfortable with ourselves. It also helps to stop judging others, as when we judge other people we are in effect judging ourselves. When you become comfortable being naked, you’ll feel less distracted about how you look and more comfortable about how you feel.

A few things you didn’t know about...

being healthy Your hair

The average person loses around 80 hairs a day. If you are losing too much hair as a woman, especially on the top of the head and the sides of the forehead, you might want to be checked for polycystic fibrosis. Iron deficiency can also cause more hair loss than usual.

Your bones and calcium

Our bones not only support our organs and muscles, they help regulate our calcium levels, too. If you’re short of calcium, your bones will start breaking down to up the calcium levels in your body until the right levels are reached. Consider checking your calcium levels and supplementing if necessary.

Happy thoughts, happy heart

Thinking optimistically is good not only for your mood – it’s good for your heart, too. Findings published in the European Heart Journal revealed that optimistic people are less likely to suffer from heart disease. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center found that heart patients who were more optimistic about their treatment lived longer than those who weren’t.

Your kidneys may be small – each is about the size of your fist – but they do important work for your body. They keep you healthy by maintaining the right balance of water (and other substances). They also help you excrete toxins. Taking in enough fluid helps your kidneys do their job. Drink plenty of fresh, clean, water. Especially in summer when your body loses more water through sweat.

Healthy, happy skin

There up to 1,000 different types of good bacteria living on your skin. These bacteria help with skin regeneration and immunity. To keep your skin healthy, use mild and natural soaps and cleansers.
