range of organic superfoods

Incredible nutritional value The reason we add Superfoods to our diet is for their incredible nutritional value. A diet high in nutrition will give you more energy and vitality. Superfoods added to cereals, fruit salad, snack packs, smoothies or in baking, gives you the assurance of better nutrition. Much of the food available today doesn’t have the nutritional value it could have. Growing methods, processing and transporting can contribute to denaturing food. Adding superfoods to your diet gives you the assurance of better nutrition, anti-oxidant benefits and it can boost energy and immunity.

publisher's letter Whatever you feel about the over-commercialisation of events like Valentine’s Day, it does remind us all about the existence of love and the importance of loving and being loved. Although, of course, we should express love all the time and be especially aware of how privileged we are to experience love, the month of February brings a special thrill into the air. While February is mostly about romantic love, I would like to encourage you to consider all types and aspects of love, from friendship and family to new or lost love.

contents 12

As we celebrate love, it’s also important to be mindful of those who have lost love or are lonely during this time. We’ve outlined how to get over heartbreak in Be Well, and we explain how to deal with panic attacks. In Live Well, we look at how to find your soul mate and what that actually means. Dr Yesheen explains what the ‘cuddle hormone’ oxytocin does and how you can use it to spread the love.

14

In this issue, we explore the delectable world of chocolate coupled with health-boosting superfoods. I’m definitely going to try out one of the recipes, especially the chocolate one. In today’s world, technology is so much a part of everyday living and just about everyone is using at least one social media platform. We chat to Rouxmia Bougas about her daring decision to switch off all her digital socialising and how it’s had a positive impact on her work, family and ‘real’ social life. In terms of social norms, we also delve into the scary world of tantrums and help you to deal with this inevitable parenting challenge. In Live Well, we teach you how to be more intentional in bringing love into your life. In line with gaining more love in your life, read about the methodology that can assist you in becoming more ‘me aware’ and getting to know yourself that much better.

24

If you’re still not quite into the swing of things this year, read reluctant exerciser Roddy Louther’s account of how Capoeira has motivated him to become a true-blue fitness fundi. In Look Well, we turn anti-ageing around by highlighting the benefits ageing actually brings. I’m sure you’re going to really enjoy this love-packed issue, I know I am.

well said... FAVOURITE INSPIRATIONAL BLOG If you have a favourite blog you would like to share with us, don’t hesitate to send us an email. Here’s an extract from one of our favourites at http://10lbs-from-pretty. tumblr.com/ What would you do if you knew you were going to die? quit school? Paint until your fingers go numb? Travel the world and deeply inhale every breath? Hug trees and whisper sweet things into the bark? Cut your hair? Scream at that person who has always wound you up? Listen to every song you love and dance to them naked in the rain? Kiss the person you love? Well guess what, you are going to die. None of us can ever truly know exactly when, maybe tomorrow, 567 days from now, or maybe you’ll make it to age 92. But that doesn’t matter. You should be Living. It is so much easier in theory than practice, but start with the little things and work your way to true happiness.

WE TRIED IT To commemorate Valentine’s Day we sent Rouxmia Bougas off to Spier for a romantic picnic for two. In my opinion there is no better way than to spend Valentine’s Day in the great outdoors with your love. Spier is known for their amazing picnic baskets not to mention the gorgeous surroundings to picnic in. You have the option to choose between four different varieties; there is the Gourment, Vegetarian, Relaxed and Children’s basket. I went with the Gourmet Option (R298 for 2). It included e selection of delicious food with cold meats, salad, kudu biltong pate and chocolate brownies to finish. Don’t forget to book a day in advance so the Deli can prep your basket. We chose a beautiful spot under the tree by the pond and it was the most relaxing day I’ve had in ages. Spier is hosting a special Valentines Day Picnic on the 14th of February under the stars - a date not to miss! As a couple you will receive a basket full of treats with a Spier Signature Methode Cap Classique. A complimentary blanket is provided and there will be a screening of Breakfast at Tiffany’s on a big screen on the lawn. There is a VIP option available too. Make sure you book early. You can do this online at www.spierpicnics.co.za

did you know? All wines contain sulphur – there’s no such thing as a completely sulphur-free wine, however some wines contain lower levels and some have no added sulphur. If you suffer from migraines or sulphur allergies, then a lowsulphur wine will most certainly be a better choice for you. 8

Then imagine ending your walk with a delicious spread, coupled with organic wine that’s been produced among the exquisite fynbos. A trip to the tasting room may perk up your taste buds before lunch, while a tour of the fynbos nursery will round off a perfect day. It’s not often you find a piece of paradise that’s truly a piece of paradise – set in a gloriously beautiful, albeit delicate, ecosystem and with the entire operation being mindful of nature and the surrounding everything you need to live life well

ORGANIC BY NATURE Owner Kobus Du Toit has wine farming in his blood and when he first heard about organic wine-making after reading an article about how it was being done in France, the dream of Waverley Hills was immediately born. Surrounded by a team of dedicated and passionate people, from winemaker Johan Delport to the close-knit farm workers, Kobus’ dream has become a solid and exciting reality. Situated between Tulbagh and Ceres at the foothills of the Witzenberg Mountain Range, Waverley Hills Estate sits in a beautifully fertile valley, irrigated with pure mountain spring water at the source of both the Breede and Berg rivers. After deciding to venture into organic winemaking 14 years ago, Waverley Hills Estate has become a benchmark in biodiversity and organic wine production. In fact, they were the first South African organic wine estate to achieve Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) champion status. BWI Project Coordinator, Inge Kotze says: “Waverley Hills truly demonstrates the philosophy of farming in harmony with nature, with no conventional pesticides and chemical fertilisers being used, and fantastic complimentary conservation and environmental awareness activities underway on the farm.” Organic wine tastes no different from conventionally farmed wine, however, the process of winemaking from vineyard to bottle, involves no use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. Only natural

elements such as copper and sulphur are sprayed, and natural predators are used to keep harmful pests at bay. The ground surrounding the vineyards is covered in black netting to assist with grass and weed control. Waverley Hills processes are certified organic by SGS, an international certification body.

A ‘FYNER’ POINT The abundance of fynbos on the farm offers the grapes a subtle infusion to their taste and Waverly Hills wines are smooth with soft, ripe tannins with robust fynbos characteristics. Grapes grown on the estate include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvedre, Shiraz, Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Grigio and Grenache Noir; so, there’s certainly a wine to suit anyone’s palate. All the wines are available at the estate, but you can also order on the website, bringing that little piece of paradise right to your front door. And just to add even more flavour, the estate’s deli offers exquisite olive products that simply have to be tasted, devoured and loved. There’s also a magnificent conference centre for those all-important brainstorm sessions, as well as a sumptuous setting complete with an intimate chapel for that perfect wedding day.

privilege to share it with others – to this end, the Eco Centre based at Waverley Hills and the Green Fingers Initiative facilitated by local companies together with Waverley Hills allows members of the community to learn about their extraordinary ecological heritage and how to sustain its bounty. Green Fingers allows Grade Six students from various schools in the surrounding area to learn about indigenous plants and Fynbos conservation; how to reuse, reduce and recycle; how to propagate a plant; names of plants and their uses; as well as insect identification. Since its inception in 2010, over 18 schools have participated, giving myriad young learners the opportunity to learn to love their natural environment and feel proud of their natural heritage.

A PERFECT LOVE If you’re planning a romantic meal this February, there’s nothing like the beautiful colour of a Cabernet Sauvignon to compliment the red blush of love. The deep maroon centre is complemented with red cherry and chocolate aromas. A bouquet of fynbos and roasted coffee bean aromas and fresh cassis follows through and lingers on the palate. The typical red fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon are well-balanced between the soft ripe tannins and subtle oak.

MORE THAN WINE It must be a great privilege to have the opportunity to live and work within such a rich ecological treasure. And an even greater

gluten free flapjack premix Gluten free flapjacks to bring back the nostalgia of Granny's cooking Remember when Granny used to make flajacks, the warming aroma coming from the kitchen, the anticipation of wonderful hot comfort food straight off the pan, how they were soft and spongy and the syrup melted on them and drizzled off the sides. Things were different then, somehow everyone ate puddings and confectionary every day and didn’t get fat. There was enough time to mix flour and butter and everything together, the pantry was always full. Now we are much more rushed, we don’t have time to bake and health and nutrition is much more important. Yet, the comfort value of home baked foods hasn’t lost its nurturing and heart warming appeal. We realise the value of sitting around a table with loved ones and sharing a delicious treat. That’s why our gluten free premix flapjacks are the perfect solution. Save time, don’t worry about all the different ingredients, don’t even worry about the health aspect, everything has been thought out for you.

Love, Romance &

SPANISH CHICKEN

by Roddy Louther

Being our Valentine issue we asked Roddy Louther to pen his sentiments on love. “Hmm”, he said, “For as long as I can remember it has always perplexed me, it is an ‘at once thrilling’, next aching, but always-uncertain condition of the heart.” On further prompting and attempts at unraveling the mysteries of giddiness and cloud walking he chose to put his mind to romance rather than love. A subject he feels more comfortable with.

L

ove. I am so unsure what it is, or even if it exists. Yet, I have seen signs of it in the eyes of the possessed. While love is an immensely complex human experience to try and understand, this writer is glad it’s Valentine’s Day this month, and has an excuse to focus on romance, the precursor to the big thing. Romance evolved from the Latin ‘Romanicus’, meaning ‘of Roman style’. It described the courage and discipline Roman soldiers were revered for. After the Empire, Romanicus was used to describe the style of speech, writing, and artistic talents of the elite. It was also mentioned in medieval tales, to refer to chivalry. Central to our understanding of ‘romance’, is the notion of chivalry in its medieval context. Influenced by Roman military culture, the courts of Europe were protected by Chevaliers (warriors) whose sworn devotion to their Lord and Lady was sacred. Core virtues were truth and honesty, and it follows that a knight’s actions and behaviour would be guided by honorable intentions, sincere motives, and purity of heart. The Chevalier was in servitude to his Lady, both in terms of his code of conduct and courtly duties. It’s easy to see how this might fuel romantic attraction. This is where the notion of “Courtly Love”, coined by Gaston Paris in 1883, was born. Chivalry, in the context of courtly love went beyond professionalism and graciousness. It required abstinence. Intimacy with a lady inside the court, for the chevalier was a betrayal of his code and values. But love as we have come to realise, is a lively beast, not easily controlled. Marriage between European nobility was

12

mostly arranged and loveless so courtly love was destined to flourish. A ‘lover’ in the context of courtly love was understood as an emotional bond rather than a sexual relationship although as Paris said, the love was not entirely platonic either. Lovers would meet in secret for brief encounters that were inevitably highly charged with emotion but Paris claims hardly ever incorporated sexual interaction. These illicit relationships added the concepts of adventure and passion to the word, especially among the Spanish and Italian. “So Roddy,” you might ask, “when did we start to get… erm, physical?” Well, interestingly, love was not attached to the word romance until late in the seventeenth century, or, as one philosopher maintained, the emergence of the novel. Personally I think the old Bard had plenty to do with it. William Shakespeare’s tales of love and devotion, jealousy and betrayal in the glamorous courts of Europe, may have led to our modern understanding of romance. David R. Shumway, in his book Romance, Intimacy, and The Marriage Crisis, says the discourse of intimacy emerged in the last third of the 20th century – the culprits undoubtedly being 20th century novelists. They are many. But Daphne du Maurier, Jane Austin and the prolific Barbara Cartland, are the first to come to mind and therefore, perhaps the most guilty. Their novels, borrowed much from the sexual tensions associated with courtly love. Indeed they show that for the discourse of intimacy, emotional closeness was more essential than passion. This does not mean intimacy replaces romance. On the contrary, intimacy and romance coexist. Voila! So Valentine’s Day is an international call to romance, as we know it. It’s a call to the everything you need to live life well

chivalrous side of men, and these days’ women too - to honour the traditions of the chevalier. It’s not a soppy, Jane Austin affair - it’s a joyous opportunity to present your romantic intentions to the object of your desires. For others it’s the perfect opportunity to rekindle a waning flame and sometimes, just to say sorry. For restauranters it’s now or never, and for the flower sellers of Adderly street, it’s… well Christmas! You might wonder why I have chosen a Spanish dish this month. Firstly, I am a huge fan of filmmaker Pablo Almodóvar and the expression of love and romance in Spanish culture and literature. And Penelope Cruz, of course. I could have chosen any country’s cuisine but what swayed me was a survey given by The Telegraph, which found Spanish men to be the best lovers on the planet. They are followed by (in this order) Brazilian, Italian, French, then (can you believe it!) the Irish? Sixth were us Saffa boys, beating off our Australian and Kiwi counterparts – to me, that is all that matters. I hope you enjoy my Spanish Chicken and Chorizo casserole with Yoghurt and Toasted Cumin seeds. It’s spicy, tasty, easy to prepare, and has that, “Damn, what’s happening in my mouth!” effect, which will send the right signals across the table… PS: In the survey, the worst lovers were German.

A

fter seeing the Aztec Emperor Montezuma drinking copious amounts of chocolate before visiting his harem, the Spanish conquistadores hastily returned home with a huge stash. To improve the taste they mixed the beans with sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and cinnamon. The result was a triumph – a tantalizing drink that soon became oh so fashionable among the Spanish nobility. They kept the recipe a secret for nearly 100 years, when finally it leaked out and the drink’s popularity quickly spread across Europe. In 1640 James Wadsworth noted in A Curious History of the Nature and Quality of Chocolate:

“‘Twill make Old women Young and Fresh; Create New Motions of the Flesh, And cause them to long for you know what, If they but taste of chocolate.”

did you know? As far back as 2000 years ago Mayan and Aztec elites began infusing cocoa beans with water to form frothy chocolate drinks, and what do you know – the first frappuccinos! Besides its fabulous taste, they noticed the nourishing concoction also ignited amorous feelings. So began chocolate’s romance with love.

In 1643 Spanish Princess Maria Theresa married Louis XIV of France, rumoured to have seduced him with chocolate, packaged in an ornate chest. By the end of the century chocolate’s reputation as an aphrodisiac flourished beyond the French court. European art and literature of the time is rife with erotic imagery inspired by chocolate. Even the churches made an attempt to subdue secular criticism. The Pope declared that drinking of chocolate on Fridays was not contrary to fasting laws. But nuns, however, were prohibited from tasting its corruptive delights. During the 1700’s the production of chocolate diversified - various candies, bonbons, creams, and caramels were created and the world’s insatiable craze for chocolate escalated.

did you know? Chef Fritz Knipschildt produces the world’s most expensive chocolate at his Chocopologie Caf in Connecticut, USA. The dark chocolate truffle is made of 70% Valrhona cacao blended into a creamy ganache with truffle oil and rolled around a real black truffle centre dusted with cacao powder. And the price? A steal at R2,600 (approx. $250) per truffle..

In 1839 the German company Jordan & Timaeus produced the world’s first milk chocolate. In 1861, in a genius marketing move, Richard Cadbury created the first ever heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day, commercialising the holiday - and the rest, as they say, is history. As a result, every February 14th, love-struck men and women spend more than R10 billion on chocolate products. Perhaps these products would be more accurately described as chocolate flavoured sugar products. The corporate mantra of profit maximisation has led to a continual reduction of cocoa content in most commercial chocolate bars. Cocoa butter is increasingly being replaced with vegetable fats, partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats), and tropical oils (saturated fats). This takes away the need to temper the chocolate, making it cheaper to produce, but resulting in a waxy, inferior product. These fats also have a deleterious impact on our cholesterol levels, exacerbating heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Now listen up and take note: not every lover wants to receive a below-par, heart shaped box of chocolates, even if it’s wrapped in bedazzling red foil and tied with a pink bow. Nothing says I can’t be bothered like cheap chocolate. But if the bling eludes you and your beloved happens to be gastronomically inclined, make up a high cacao content treat - you’ll earn extra brownie points for being thoughtful, original, and organic.

The word ‘chocolate’ is derived from the Mayan word xocolatl (bitter/warm water), although its Latin name Theobroma cacao (food of the Gods) is perhaps more apt. Raw cacao is one of nature’s superfoods, and rich in: •

antioxidant flavonols which fight DNA damage, premature aging, heart disease and cancer.

magnesium, the brain mineral.

epicatechin, a dietary flavonoid which promotes cardiovascular health.

serotonin, dopamine and phenylethylamine, three wellstudied neurotransmitters which help alleviate depression and are associated with feelings of wellbeing, attraction, and pleasure.

anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid naturally found in the human brain, known as’the bliss chemical’. In fact, anandamide is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘ananda’ meaning bliss.

Life is love expressed A path with a heart

Peter and I attended Raw Chefs training, and the wonder of raw foods and superfoods was unveiled to us. I had the true pleasure of tasting a decadent raw chocolate ganache tart made using raw cacao powder – it changed my life! As soon as I realised I didn’t have to give up chocolate, and that eating healthily included (and not excluded) delicious and indulgent taste sensations, I embarked with vigour on this new raw food - superfood path.

Love health

P

eter and I have always believed in following our path with a heart. This often means taking a risk, acting intuitively instead of logically or taking the road less traveled. This seemingly impulsive approach to life can feel quite scary at times, but what an enriching adventure it is to let that spark of love flow through you.

Love is magic Being in love is magical, it’s full of mystery, excitement, synchronicity and wonder. Our heart-led journey took us to the UK where, through a series of ‘co-incidences’ and super-synchronicities we were gifted our first juicer and discovered Goji Berries which were just beginning to make their appearance on the health scene over there. We started green juicing and eating goji berries and they started to work their magic on us, and the world of Superfoods began to unfold before our eyes.

For the love of chocolate Having grown up in a bakery I have always loved chocolate, but knowing that all that sugar, dairy and trans fat found in most chocolate bars wasn’t good for me, I decided to kick the habit. As if by magic, I was presented with the alternative. Peter was shopping online and stumbled across 100% raw cacao nibs. He ordered some and a few days later the postman delivered them to our door. I snacked on raw cacao nibs and raisins and really enjoyed the deep chocolate flavour, sweetened only by the taste of the raisins. We followed the trail of cacao crumbs before us and quickly came across the growing raw food and superfood movements in the UK and US. Goji berries, maca powder, wheatgrass and cacao quickly became part of our daily routine.

When you wish someone well you wish them health and happiness. Happiness flows with ease when your body is healthy. It is so much more difficult to smile when you are in any kind of physical pain. Discovering the raw food lifestyle was a revelation, and once we put the principles into action and started to feel the health benefits of dining on living, raw food and nutrient dense superfoods, there was no turning back. Nothing tastes as good as good health feels, and as chefs we had the skills to make the food taste great as well! Double bonus.

so that more people can access the health message of superfoods. Our Superfoods staff and team are fueled by these superfoods, as we nurture and grow health awareness together for a healthier, happier, more love-filled and more loveexpressed life upon our sacred earth.

Magic made real We have been ingesting the nutritional potency of superfoods for years now and feel it throughout the cells of our bodies and beings. Since the birth of our daughter, Katara in 2012 we felt the desire to write a Superfoods book. As new parents and zany superfoodists we wanted this book to be extra special and extra fun – something that children could engage with and enjoy too! The Magic of Superfoods, with rawlicious recipes for radiant health was launched in December 2013 and is something completely different. It’s practical, informative, fun and fantastical.

Sharing our passion We moved home to South Africa and started sharing our passion for health through our raw food courses. We were definitely in the right place at the right time and South Africans were ready and willing to listen to our way out ideas and taste our raw food dishes. We focused on debunking standard nutritional myths and demonstrating how to make healthy food taste great. We were continually asked to write down our recipes, which we did with the publication of our first recipe book in 2009 called Rawlicious, Recipes for Radiant Health. In 2011 our Rawlicious recipe book and 2-day course was made accessible to many more health seekers through our DVD course, Rawlicious, Elements of Health. Our latest book: The Magic of Superfoods has just been released!

The Magic of Superfoods is available at Wellness Warehouse stores and online at www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Life is love expressed Life is a beautiful gift and to love and express your love through your life’s activities is a miracle. This Valentines Day whether you are in a relationship or not, celebrate the MAGIC of YOU and the things you love to do the most!

Building a heart-led company When we started our courses we wanted to share our passion for delicious healthy food choices, but how could we do this without sharing our newly discovered raw cacao recipes? Raw cacao was unavailable and unheard of back then, so we started importing it, along with goji berries, which we sold at markets and at our raw food courses. Our Superfoods brand and Superfoods import company has grown out of these humble beginnings and we now have a wide range of the world’s best superfoods available throughout the country

Healing from

Instead of seeing a break-up as an end of something, look at it as the beginning of something new.

By Kirsten Alexander

HEARTBREAK

The exhilarating roller-coaster rush of falling in love can just as easily be replaced by the crash and burn heaviness of heartbreak. While you may be able to cope well with loves onrush of joy and fear, the deeply dark blanket of heartbreak may well send you into a deep depression, unable to do even mundane tasks like getting up in the morning.

P

revent the ravages of heartbreak by setting off on a journey of nurture and self love.

HEARTBREAK TOOL KIT •

1 loving family or group of friends who accept you no matter what and who will give you good hugs for your daily dose of oxytocin.

1 good listener who is nonjudgemental.

4 new habits – start a hobby; rearrange your living space; a new route to work; change your exercise routine.

2 new styles – update your hairstyle and buy at least two new items of clothing that make you feel great.

10 minutes in meditation daily – accept and feel your emotions in a non-judgemental and nurturing process.

1 nutrient-rich meal plan.

2 important daily supplements.

a burner with your favourite aromatherapy fragrance.

RE-FRAMING While a break up is devastating, try to reframe your perception of it. Instead of seeing it as an end of something, look at it as the beginning of something new. If you need a little motivation, consider all the activities you would have liked to do, but never got around to because your ex took up that time, or was not that interested in those things. Take a step back from the relationship and view it as an objective observer. Consider the negatives and positives and if you need to, write up a list of pros and cons, to get a balanced perspective in your head, and heart. Love is complicated and we often place value on a person based on what we want, not always what we’re actually getting. Ask yourself if you truly loved the person or what they represented. It’s a tough question, but if you’re completely honest, it might be greatly revealing and help to lessen the hurt. For example, if you particularly miss the way your partner knew your every thought, consider whether what you actually love is the concept of being ‘known’. Then list all the people in your life who know you – even if it’s the sum of all of them who know you as much as your ex, you will realise that you are still ‘known’.

IT IS WHAT IT IS

did you know? While heartbreak is devastating and actually causes physical pain along with the emotional hurt, time does heal. Be grateful for the opportunity you have to love and nurture yourself, to learn about yourself and to be with yourself. Remember that, even if it’s hard to believe, there will be a day when you wake up without pain, when you wake up with a smile on your face and look forward to a new day.

Buddhism teaches a lot about the heart and brokenness, and in fact this type of teaching has been integrated into what’s now known as mindfulness. While much break-up advice centres on forgetting, the practise of mindfulness encourages you to actually feel the feelings. Don’t push your emotions aside, accept them, examine them and feel them. Set your mind towards a non-judgmental space and accept what is. Forget the ‘should haves’ and ‘if onlys’. Acceptance is a big step towards healing. Revel in the rawness of your heart and emotions. The capacity to love, and therefore to be hurt by love, is marvellously human. It’s really what defines humanity. Rejoice in your ability to feel such emotion – it’s healthy and natural. By leaving your heart open, even in its raw state, you can find a shift in yourself – away from looking to be loved and towards looking to love. When you seek to love, you become more open to being loved. It’s a beautiful vulnerability that is intangibly attractive.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Get into the big picture. Instead of viewing this one event, the break-up, as lifedefining, see it as an event along your pathway through life. There’s a flow in life and each day you go through moments of joy and heartbreak. By being aware of and fully exploring your emotions, you become more cognisant of who you are and how much love you actually generate.

THE ADDICT RULE Think of yourself as a recovering addict. One of the steps in recovery is to change your habits and habitat. Try, as far as possible, to remove reminders of your ex from your life. Here are a few tips to help: 1. Go to a different coffee shop for a while. 2. Take a different route to work. 3. Lose the ‘when we met’ or ‘our first date’ song from your playlist. 4. Wash every piece of linen in your house that may have a lingering smell of your ex love. 5. Change the look of your home by updating your cushion colours and rearranging the furniture. 6. Change your look – do something radically different with your hair and update your wardrobe with a few choice items you know your ex wouldn’t like. Pain can become a habit, so while it’s totally natural to feel hurt and anger, and you shouldn’t ignore the feelings, try not to wallow in them. If you find your mind constantly wandering towards your ex, a little meditation or distraction can keep your mind from forming a ‘hurt habit’. Breaking a habit isn’t easy, it takes dedication and discipline. One of the hardest habits to break is picking up the phone or sending off a text every time something occurs to you – the sharing of the minutiae of your life that makes a relationship intimate. If necessary, delete your ex from your phone list for a while, or change their name in your contact list to ‘don’t phone this person’, or something similar that works. Of course, if you share children, you’re going to have to communicate, but work out ways that you can do that without bringing in the little details of your life. Spread your life details around with various friends and family members, or simply keep a notebook on you and write down your thoughts.

25

bewell

integrative health

CIRCUMSPECTION Social media is a great place for keeping up with people, but it can also become something of an addiction, especially if you’re desperate for news about your ex. As tempting as it might be, it’s best to cut yourself off from social media for at least a month while you work on yourself. Nothing your ex is doing will make it any easier – even if they are wallowing in misery too. Other than the potential of becoming a bit of a stalker, staying away from social media will also remove the temptation to post miserable and embarrassing snippets as you go through the dark emotions of a break up. Mutual friends are a difficult subject and remember it’s hard for them too, to have to choose sides. Pick one person whose shoulder you can cry on, but leave the rest alone as far as moaning about your ex is concerned. Try to keep relationships going, but don’t push people away or make them choose sides – you’re going to need them while you recover.

5 YOGA POSES TO HEAL A BROKEN HEART The following five yoga poses are a fantastic balm for the broken-hearted.

1 Bridge

A gentle way to release emotions. Lie on your back, feet on the floor and knees bent. Tuck your arms straight, behind your back and arch your back.

2 Child pose

There is victory in surrender and child pose is a relaxing, restful pose that allows you to abandon yourself. Sit on your feet, knees bent in front of you and fold over, with your arms stretched forward.

ANY PILLS FOR THIS ILL?

3 Deep fold

Remove negative emotions by bending forward in a full fold, breathing deeply and you will also release spinal tension.

4 Camel

A powerful heart-opener that leads to incredible emotional release. This pose improves brain circulation and increases memory, as well as reducing stress and depression. On your knees, bend backward, letting your head drop down, and touch the souls of your feet.

26

5 High lunges

These really help to ground your body and are also hip openers. When this position is held it releases tension, bringing more energy into your body. From downward dog, lunge one foot in-between your hands and stretch your arms up.

everything you need to live life well

With heart-break, eating habits often suffer enormously. Losing your appetite completely is a very normal reaction and while this may bode well for those who may have put on some weight during the relationship, it’s generally not very healthy at all. And, poor eating habits certainly contribute to depression too. However, making healthy meals for one might be too difficult for a while, so be sure to get the nutrients you need. Vitamin B is essential for stress management and relief, so keep a good supply of a vitamin B complex on hand to keep your nervous system functioning. Vitamin C is a great immune booster; it protects and repairs strained adrenal glands and is great to ward off anxiety. Whatever you are managing to eat, try to include food that’s rich in vitamin A, magnesium and vitamin E.

Omega-3 at its best SOLAL’s Krill Oil is now more effective and fresher than ever before Krill oil is superior to fish oil 50% better absorption rate, better brain benefits, and free from heavy metals Krill oil supplies more than double phospholipid-omega–3’s, an indicator of freshness Krill oil has a 10x better phospholipid ratio for better effectiveness Choose krill oil omega-3 for heart, brain, joint and immune system health

Our Krill Oil is now more effective, fresher and more environmentally friendly than ever before due to the utilisation of a new harvesting system. This method, known as Eco Harvesting™, is a non-net micro-tube harvesting system that ensures no unwanted by-catch of fish, shark, seals and dolphins. Many krill oil suppliers still use the older net-trawling technology. SOLAL made the change as soon as this technology became available, in July 2013. Testing proves SOLAL’s new Krill Oil is superior due to immediate on-board oil extraction. Look for the bubble in the capsule: SOLAL’s Krill Oil is manufactured in hard V-Caps (Vcaps Plus®) capsules and air is flushed out with a non-reactive nitrogen bubble. Standard soft gel capsules are made without nitrogen and their soft capsule shell allows 50 times more damaging oxygen from the air to penetrate through the capsule shell over time. Sustainable and traceable: SOLAL’s Krill Oil source is registered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a leader in sustainability standards. Every single batch of SOLAL’s Krill Oil can be traced back to the exact GPS coordinates where it was harvested. This ensures harvesting only occurs in areas of abundance, and not from protected reserve areas. All nutraceuticals are manufactured in cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) licensed facilities. cGMP is the part of quality assurance that ensures that products are manufactured and controlled according to consistent quality standards that are appropriate for their intended use.

Relieve stress

Peel an orange

Sceletium helps soothe anxiety and relieve stress and mental tension. It is a safe, non-addictive, natural remedy that helps relieve the symptoms of every day stress. Sceletium has calming, relaxing and mood enhancing effects. As a natural selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), it is known to offer a sense of well being and treat symptoms of depression.

Nieca Goldberg, Medical Director of the Center for Women’s Health in New York City recommends peeling an orange and eating it as a surefire way to decrease stress. The reason it works is that peeling releases a satisfying scent and triggers you to anticipate the refreshment of the fruit. While you are eating it your blood vessels relax and blood pressure lowers. You need to focus on the orange though without multi-tasking.

The key to keeping anxiety from spiralling out of control is understanding.

UNDERSTANDING PANIC Have you ever felt a moment of blind panic when your breathing comes in quick, hard gasps, your stomach clenches or does an alarming loop-de-loop, your palms become sweaty and your heart sounds intensely loud? If it’s not a reaction to seeing the love of your life, it could be a panic attack.

THE UNKNOWN ABYSS The great rush of adrenaline that causes those symptoms is your flight-or-fight reaction kicking in. That ancient, intrinsic, natural response to threat that, in some people, occurs for no known reason at all. Thought for a long time to be an extreme reaction to stress, panic attacks are now considered an anxiety disorder and should be taken seriously. That’s not to say, however, that science understands its root cause completely. Here’s what science does know. People may be more prone to panic attacks as a result of genetics; being under major stress; having a temperament that’s more susceptible to feeling stressed; and certain changes in your brain function (for example in the amygdala, the fear centre of the brain; or parts of your centre brain responsible for various functions including fear). Aside from extreme stress and a family history of panic attacks, they can also be triggered by traumatic incidents like the death or serious illness of someone close to you; as a result of past trauma; major changes in your life like having a new baby; or a history of childhood sexual or physical abuse.

possible is essential. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Mindfulness therapy are two fantastic tools to treat anxiety. The key to keeping anxiety from spiralling out of control is understanding. This means learning as much as you can about anxiety and panic attacks – learning about the physical manifestations so you can recognise an attack for what it is. Spend time truly examining yourself and discover what your triggers are – from types of food to behaviours or circumstances. Follow the prompts below to help keep your anxiety in check: •

quote Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strengthcarrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. Corrie ten Boom

TAKE CONTROL Panic attacks are exceptionally frightening, with many people convinced they’re experiencing a heart attack – because of this, there can be a very real looming fear of a repeat attack. This fear can radically change your behaviour, and you may find yourself avoiding certain situations to make sure you won’t experience another attack. The fear itself can trigger the next attack, and so getting treatment as soon as

To discover your triggers, focus on your thoughts, people, objects, food and places in the context of your anxiety. Ask yourself what it feels like; where in your body do you feel any change; where do you feel emotional change; has this feeling of panic taken you by surprise. Write down your observations and keep them with you. Validate your feelings – anxiety can be scary, not just the physical symptoms of it, but the fear that you are losing control. Don’t try to ignore the feelings, however. Rather explore what you are feeling and identify what the trigger was. If it’s something tangible, like the loss of a job, then consider all the implications of it, rationally, without ‘awfulising’ the situation.

Check your diet – food high in sugar, fat or caffeine is likely to increase your anxiety. Stick to natural, unprocessed food without additives.

While in the throes of a panic attack, most people just want to curl up into a ball and wait for it to be over. Sometimes there is extreme restlessness and no position or action can calm it down. Because it’s actually a rush of adrenaline, it makes sense to use that energy up as quickly as possible. If you are able, do 10-15 quick star jumps as soon as you feel panic rising. It goes without saying that just about any form of exercise is good for you, and that’s true with anxiety as well – exercise boosts your immune system and increases your body’s optimal functioning, which includes regulation of your natural stress responses.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Remember that you are actually in control. Very often panic attacks seem to be completely uncontrollable and appear to come out of nowhere. But, you are able to control your thoughts and how you react to certain situations. Become more mindful of where your thoughts may lead you and stop them when they are leading you towards a dangerous state of mind.

Breathing tip: Inhale slowly for 4 seconds into your belly. Watch as your abdomen expands and fill your lungs. Gently hold the breath for 2 seconds and slowly exhale for 6 seconds. As you exhale, consciously let go of your tension. Having a single focus (like breathe) creates a distraction away from the panic.

TIP PRACTISE MEDITATION AND DEEP BREATHING ON A DAILY BASIS AND THIS WILL HELP YOU BECOME MORE AWARE OF YOUR MIND-BODY CONNECTIONS.

DISTRACT BUT NOT DETRACT There’s a great scene in the movie Happy Feet where one of the penguins is terrified of heights, but faces the panic-inducing task of taking a flying leap off a cliff-face. He decides he needs to distract himself and in typical cartoon character style, he does just that before hurtling himself off the ledge. Meditation is a brilliant tool for keeping anxious thoughts at bay, so is reciting a mantra. The repetitive nature of a mantra engages your mind – effectively distracting you from the anxiety-inducing thoughts floating around. Mantras also stimulate your senses – the sound stimulates your brain’s auditory centre and if the sound you make can be felt in your throat, there’s also a tactile aspect to it. The soft, sing-song nature of a mantra is generally relaxing, as is the repetition of phrase or phrases. Finding a positive affirmation as your mantra is important, and it can be anything that brings calm and light to your mind. For example: I feel calm and serene; I am safe; love my body; I believe in myself.

ADDING MORE LOVE Dr Yesheen Singh

What if there was a magical pill that took away all your reservations about social intimacy, one that removed all thoughts of self-doubt and self-deprecation? A pill that helped you open your heart to the world around you and let more love into yours? Imagine if you could have these benefits in milliseconds, without waiting three weeks for therapeutic levels to be achieved. And imagine if this substance had no side effects apart from more joy and relaxation. Would you try it out?

A

llow me introduce you to a little hormone called Oxytocin, also known as the ‘love molecule’. Lately, researchers have been observing startling results from the activity of this hormone. We produce oxytocin, a protein-based hormone, in our pituitary gland, the pea-sized gland that dangles between the two hemispheres of our brain. Although historically Oxytocin was thought to primarily increase contractions during labour; produce more milk during breastfeeding and enhance bonding between mother and baby, today these benefits are considered merely the tip of the iceberg. Oxytocin could also be called the ‘cuddle molecule’ because of its impact on generating loving relationships between people. It begins its magic by sparking relationships, bringing people closer and building trust. Once cupid has struck, oxytocin helps increase levels of affection between couples and even helps improve desire and sexual arousal. During orgasm the brain floods with oxytocin, leading to heightened feelings of connectivity and

32

cuddling. The love-enhancing properties of oxytocin are not limited to romantic relationships - many studies show how oxytocin is beneficial to all forms of human interaction. It does so by firstly boosting levels of selfesteem and self-love. When the pot of self-love is full, it is easier for it to overflow and direct loving kindness to others. The ‘trust hormone’ makes us more generous towards others (up to 80% in one study), helps treat debilitating shyness, improves social anxiety disorders, including those associated with autism, and may even be of benefit to people with post traumatic stress disorder. It has a major impact on our ability to let the daily stressors of life roll off us, like water off a ducks’ back, and helps alleviate the depths of depression, including postpartum depression. On a physiological level it helps with pain relief, digestion, healing, glucose and insulin balance, and even weight loss. So where can you access this magical hormone? It’s quite simple really… reach out and touch someone. Oxytocin is produced by our pituitary glands when we everything you need to live life well

touch and connect physically with another. A handshake, a hug, most body contact for that matter, will produce oxytocin in both you and the person you are touching. It’s a near instantaneous way to establish trust. There’s even evidence that simply looking at someone or thinking about them will be effective. And you shouldn’t limit yourself to the human kind - touching or thinking about our pets and animal friends also stimulates the release of this life-enhancing molecule. How interesting is it that in this increasingly partitioned world, where we separate from one another behind our cellphones and Facebook profiles, behind our office compartments and home security walls, that it is something as simple as human touch that offers a solution? The month of Love is the perfect month to begin a practice of hugging and touching those around you a little more, and allowing yourself to be hugged and touched in return. So do your bit by spreading around some oxytocin. For more about Dr Yesheen Singh log onto www.healthnation.co.za

Ayurveda for you AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO JOINT DISEASE cinnamon, clove and black pepper. 4. Avoid stimulating activity at night, like watching television right before bed. 5. Eat your main meal at noon and a light, nourishing dinner early in the evening. 6. Engage in mild exercise like walking every day. 7. Include meditation and deep breathing exercises to help dissolve stress and calm the mind. This is especially good for calming vata. 8. Try and have a daily ayurvedic oil massage. You can do this yourself with sesame oil.

3 way to reduce Ama

A

yurveda identifies two major types of joint problems. The first is associated with poorly nourished joints, an overall weakness or low bone density. This condition comes from an imbalance of vata. Vata is the principle that governs circulation and nerve impulses within the body. Joint problems result in discomfort and clicking or cracking sounds. If not attended to, this can lead to eventual immobilization of the joints. Degeneration happens when the bones don’t receive the lubricating nourishment they need. This we describe as a kapha imbalance – a condition called Sandhivata which can be compared to Osteoarthritis in modern terms. The second kind of joint disease is associated with a toxic overload in the joints, as a result of ama or toxins in the body. Ama (the sticky, toxic waste-product of incomplete digestion) accumulates in the joints and creates stiffness and heaviness. If ama is not treated, it converts to amavisha, an even more toxic form of ama

more irritating and reactive in nature. Amavisha causes the joint to become inflamed, swollen and painful. Damp, cold weather, like we have in a typical Cape Town winter, aggravates this condition. If untreated, amavisha mixes with the natural lubricating fluids in the joint governed by kapha to form sleshma (an extremely sticky, toxic substance) that restricts mobility and disturbs circulation in the joint. If ama, amavisha and sleshma remain in the joint, the structure of the joint and the bone itself becomes damaged. This condition, Amavata, can be compared to Rheumatoid Arthritis in modern terms.

8 ways to pacify Vata 1. Include all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent) in your diet. 2. Eat grains like quinoa and rye, cooked in water with a little added ghee; freshly cooked organic vegetables; mung dal soup and sweet, organic, juicy fruits. 3. Make sure you get calcium, include highquality organic milk and vegetables like spinach and asparagus. Eat root vegetables cooked with

1. Eat warm, light foods that are easy to digest. Nourishing soups and warm, freshly cooked grains and vegetables prepared with spices like ginger, cumin, fennel, mint, turmeric and fenugreek will stimulate digestion and help dissolve ama. 2. Keep digestion in check by avoiding sleeping during the day, going to bed early, and rising before 6h00am. 3. Exercise every day. Do something you love. A brisk walk is ideal for most people, along with yoga, although if you have more kapha accumulation you may need a vigorous exercise to stay in balance. You'll feel lighter and more energetic just by making these simple changes in your routine.

Herbs that Heal Shallaki (Boswellia serrata) is a powerful pain and inflammation remedy mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts dating back thousands of years. This herb is recommended for treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, joint pain, skeletal muscle pain and back pain. It plays a significant role in supporting normal joint function. Rasna (Alpinia galangal) is a member of the rhizome family. Like Ginger and Turmeric, it has anti-inflammatory properties which alleviate and treat muscle and joint aches. Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvenating tonic. The use of the leaf and the root of this plant treat oedema and rheumatism and alleviate muscle aches and joint pains.

Finding your

soulmate By Gabriel Byrne

36

February is the love month, and yet amid all the lighthearted celebrations on Valentine’s Day, many singles feel depressed, lonely, and even hopeless. It does not have to be that way. Finding a soul mate and true love is possible for anyone at any age if you’re willing to make the decision, prepare yourself, and be pro-active.

everything you need to live life well

Whether you believe you will ever find your soul mate or not, you are right.

livewell green living

MAKING THE DECISION It is important to bear in mind that having a soul mate will not bring meaning and fulfilment to one’s life. It is an unrealistic expectation (along with the perfect nuclear family, and the necessity of having children) created by romance novels and Hollywood. Many, many people lead joyous and fulfilled lives without having children or a soul mate, and don’t beat themselves up for it. However, if having a soul mate is what you want, create a clear intention by making the conscious decision to find one. It really is as simple as that.

Preparing Yourself It seems obvious but the most common reason many people struggle to find a soul mate is their negative starting point. After a few bad relationships some people unconsciously shut down and give up. They no longer believe the right person is out there and while one part of them is saying “YES, I want a relationship,” another part is saying “NO, I’m afraid I’ll get hurt again.” Some people equate being alone with loneliness and seek a soul mate to conceal the bleak and dismal emptiness in their lives. They will be happy only once they find the joy in being themselves. Then there are those who yearn for true love but are trapped in a vicious circle of self-fulfilling predictions, “I’m never going to find a soul mate because I’m fat/ugly/short/ poor. Nobody wants a fatty, so I’ll save myself the effort/embarrassment/cost/time etc.”

did you know? Studies show that 85% of people in relationships are in them for the wrong reasons.

Don’t ever sabotage yourself, because (to rephrase Henry Ford’s famous quote),

“Whether you believe you will ever find your soul mate or not, you are right.” A big part of meeting that person is getting over emotional wounds and the negative baggage we all have. Cleanse your heart of toxic emotions; you only poison yourself. There is no greater turn off than self-pity. Do some serious soul searching and if you determine that you are sabotaging your quest, admit it, get over it, and move on. See if you feel you deserve love, you really want it, you are ready for it.

Being Pro-Active Define what you want One of life’s mischievous and sometimes bitter gifts is that we get what we want. If this sounds like a contradiction in terms, remember the Chinese curse, “May you get what you want”. Not what will make you happy, not what you deserve, not what you need: but what you want. Go as far as to make a list of the qualities you would like in a partner so you are clear what you want to attract. Be selective – are you so desperate to have someone in your life right now that anyone will do? One of the keys to attracting a compatible partner with whom you can build true lasting love is to be crystal clear on exactly what you want and why.

Boost your confidence Treat yourself with excellent care and respect: honour your mind and body through play, healthy eating, meditation, joyful movement, stretching, and rest. Protect yourself from situations and individuals who drain your time and energy. Spoil yourself: buy yourself flowers every week, indulge in a bit of chocolate, pamper yourself with a spa treatment, spend time in nature.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Take pride in your appearance: dress with care, buy that perfume you adore, moisturise, spend an absolute whack at the best hairstylist. Be very compassionate and gentle with yourself in all ways.

Deprogramme negativity Be aware of your verbal and body language and consciously replace self-destructive with constructive programming. Stop being negative about yourself, and never point out your shortcomings or flaws. For example, if someone were to complement your clothes, thank them with a smile. Don’t say, “Oh this old dress? It’s so threadbare and faded!” because you destroy something they like replacing it with an old, threadbare and faded dress!

Get out of ruts Make changes in other aspects of your life such as work, health, and social life. Stagnation is the enemy, it leads to decline and decay. Change is dynamic, it brings energy, new ideas and opportunities. Think big, consider a revolution in your life: a different job, moving house, relocating to another city, emigrating!

Be the person you want to meet Be attractive, confident, caring, supportive, loving, funny, friendly, approachable, interesting, and interested.

Get wise to how affirmations work, and use them Don’t you sometimes feel despondent when reading those affirmations stuck on your fridge door? You know the ones – they begin with “I deserve...”, and “I allow myself...”? Of course you feel despondent, not much has changed and they’ve been there for a year! Trash them! Used correctly affirmations can be potent tools, but totally ineffective if used unmindfully. (See the info box for a few pointers.)

Reaffirming Affirmations > 37

livewell green living

Reaffirming Affirmations • To affirm is to state emphatically or publicly. “Forgiving strengthens me.” • They are not mantras, prayers, or spells: they are catalysts effecting personal change. “With this sentence I calm myself.” • Accord them more than a daily muttering: use them, weave them into the now. “I’m actually enjoying gym!” • Use humour and personal references... • Animate abstractions into actions. “I care for myself by...” • Use them to change how you feel about the past, the now, and the future. • They enable you to reprogramme your responses and change your experience of life. • Their power lies not in their letters and words, but in the impetus of their intent. • Like poetry, using tight, compact language enhances their power. • Use cautiously – know what you want, not what you think you want. “I want an animal in bed!”

38

Act “as if” Act “as if” by doing all the things you tell yourself you would do if you were with someone - make sure your home is tidy, go for walks in the park, spend weekends away, wear sexy underwear.

Get out there! One of the myths many singles buy into is “if I am meant to be with my soul mate, they will find me.” If you need to find a new job, would you sit around saying, “if I’m meant to have a job, it will find me?” Of course not. And yet, many people live with the myth that love, if it’s “meant to be,” will simply happen. Soul mates don’t just happen, you’ve got to create them and then get out there and fetch them! •

Get out and live a little, have fun and meet people.

Take up a new hobby or interest; or try something utterly random.

Join a group - hiking, sports, wine tasting.

Invite others to do things and go to places with you.

Accept invitations to parties and social events.

Hang out at the Wellness Café in Kloof street.

Be courageous and learn how to handle rejection – accept and create dates.

Tell friends and colleagues that you are looking to meet new people.

Try out new dating options such as Internet dating, singles nights, speed dating.

Make eye contact with someone you like and have the courage to talk to them.

Remember there is nothing more attractive than someone who loves their life.

If you don’t get to meet your soul mate this week at least you’ll be having a fabulous time!

everything you need to live life well

Social media creates a society where there’s no mystery left and yet also no honesty.

Technology is supposed to enhance and simplify life. And to some extent it does. But with the now constant access to every aspect of everyone else life at your fingertips, technology seems to be complicating human relationships.

did you know? Cyber bullying is fast becoming a devastating trend that offer bullies endless opportunities for attack, and victims no relief. In the past, bullied children could at least gain some sense of normality and safety at home, but with the ‘always on’ nature of social media, there’s simply no escape. The relative anonymity of cyber interaction also means that bullying is becoming nastier and more common.

MORE IS MAYBE A BIT MUCH The ability of social networking to connect you to people across the globe, people you wouldn’t normally get to meet and interact with has gone a long way to expanding the ‘global village’ effect in the world. While this may tie in to the positive aspect of French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s contention that the greater your social network, the more likely you are to succeed, especially in business, digital social networking doesn’t seem to have quite the same effect. Although it can expose you to a wider range of ideas and knowledge, there’s a more sinister side to your store of friends, or as Bourdieu called it, social capital. According to research by John Cacioppo, there’s the matter of social contamination. In an offline environment, Cacioppo found

42

everything you need to live life well

that if one of your direct connections is lonely, you’re 52% more likely to also be lonely. With online connections, it was found that anger, hostility, loneliness and other negative emotions expressed are likely to transmit to you – meaning that even if you have never met the person in real life, their negative behaviour can still influence you. On the upside, however, it may just work in reverse, too.

KEEPING UP WITH THE SIMS But, it does become more complicated because of this effect. When talking about your life, you’re highly attuned to the fact that hundreds of people will be able to view every thought, photograph, like or dislike you post on social media. And so we tend to edit our lives. Which means we put forward whatever it is we want people to know, and we tend to highlight the good stuff. A little Photoshop nip ‘n tuck takes

mere minutes, and a few exclamation marks or smiley faces puts a magical spin on whatever event you’re chatting about. There’s a huge amount of on-upmanship going on. The trouble is, even if you do it yourself, you don’t quite realise that other people are doing it too – so you end up becoming dissatisfied with your own life because ‘so and so’ seems to be truly living the dream. That’s because ‘so and so’ doesn’t post about her bad hair days, her massive argument with a colleague, etc, unless it’s with a glimmer of humour or ‘overcoming’. That’s your average person; on the other end of the scale some people tend to vomit out all their feelings in a tumble of ‘TMI’ (too much information). But, whatever way your connections are communicating, the bottom line is that often our achievements become diminished and our failures amplified.

SLIP OF THE FINGER Freud would have had a field day with the psychology of that ‘slip of the finger’ or autocorrect text issue. Although emoticons have in some way managed to overcome the lack of intonation found in a string of text, misperception is rife. Now, a message in ALL CAPS is construed as someone shouting at you. One misplaced icon or word on Facebook could send your social life spiralling out of control. Some statistics suggest that Facebook has been cited in as many as a third of all divorces in the UK. This is for various reasons, however one common issue is inappropriate messages sent to members of the opposite sex – cyber flirting is easy. It is much easier to say something a bit daring when you’re not face-to-face with a person and this can lead to a spiral of boundary over-stepping that most likely wouldn’t happen in the ‘real’ world (as opposed to the cyber world).

such things as cute puppies will generate far more engagement on a page. That’s because you know your connections will be able to see everything you like or dislike and can follow your opinions at any time of the day or night, so there’s a tangible pressure to keep within certain boundaries. All this creates a society where there’s no mystery left and yet also no honesty.

SOCIAL MEDIA SUICIDE Our very own Wellness magazine ambassador Rouxmia Bougas made a dramatic decision in December 2013. After successfully running a social media communications business, and being a passionate ambassador for all things social media-related, she cut all digital ties with the world. Rouxmia says ‘Social media has always been my thing. From the age of 21 I knew exactly how to use the dashboards and how to network via the web. I get paid to send out tweets for big corporate companies. I am a blogger, and I run a very successful social media business. Social media is amazing for business opportunities if you run it right. But when it comes to your personal life, I believe that social media is the devil.’ While she was experiencing deep personal issues, Rouxmia, in a bid to hide her distress from the world, found herself spending more and more time on various social media platforms. Instead of focusing on solid real-life relationships, she was painting a picture of a hip, savvy and completely okay person who was quite simply happy all the time. Rouxmia began comparing herself to all her ‘friends’ and this only helped to enhance her depression. That, coupled with the insight that everyone

else was also only showing the positive aspects of their lives, she decided to go cold turkey and embark on a three month social media detox. It didn’t take long after deactivating all her accounts for Rouxmia to realise that many of her friendships were merely based on her ability to network. She felt she’d been used because of her large contact base. Instead of spending most of her time updating her status and uploading her every move, Rouxmia took up surfing (in the sea, not on the net), spent time with her family and actually read a few books. In just four weeks, Rouxmia felt she was more successful in her work, relationships and her faith. ‘For some reason, after many years of being good at what I do, it’s nice to take a silent treatment and just let go and concentrate on the things that matter. As effective as it is to use these social media apps, it does come to a point where you miss the simple life that we used to have without it. I remember that my relationships were way more successful, I had way more to talk about with friends and there was way more mystery to every individual, which is all in all a good thing’.

TAKE CARE While social media is immensely important from a marketing perspective, and can be a great tool for keeping in touch with friends and family, it’s wise to be cautious when uploading the details of your life. It’s also good to take all the happy-shiny posts with a pinch of salt so you don’t end up believing everyone is living a dream life except you. Find your happiness and peace in real relationships, and keep the cyber friends for light relief.

More and more employers are checking out potential employee Facebook and twitter accounts – to get a picture of the ‘real’ person. It was recently reported in a UK newspaper that loan companies are increasingly checking out borrower’s social media profiles to see if they could be considered creditworthy. If you’re aware of this, then social media tends to become a carefully worded, life-long advertisement and not an honest reflection of who you are. Social marketers are aware, too, that controversial posts won’t get too many likes – while safe posts that depict www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Your personality, character and inclinations are all written in your face. Knowing what to look for can provide important clues about both personality and possible health imbalances.

FACE MAPPING

Eastern and Oriental systems of medicine use highly developed diagnostic techniques to determine the state of health in the body. Techniques can include examining the tongue, listening to the voice or the pattern of a pulse reading, and examining discolorations, spots, blemishes, puffiness or dryness of the skin.

I

n Japan, in the mid eighteenth century, an extraordinary man known as Mizune became famous through his ability to assess an individual’s constitution and condition. Most face reading techniques in Japan descend from his extensive knowledge. The unchangeable physical aspects like the shape of the head and face, features,

44

bone structure, gender and height, are said to determine our capacity and potential. Oriental healing arts believe that your constitution shapes your destiny. Mizume even believed that we could change our destiny through dietary changes. Looking beneath the symptoms to underlying causes is the key to successful health management and is typical of the Oriental approach. Jon Sandifer, author of The Eastern Art of Face everything you need to live life well

Diagnosis, explains what to look for and how to correct the imbalances.

The following conditions can be corrected by following the lifestyle suggestions >

thoughts & emotions

FOREHEAD

EYEBROWS

The upper aspects of the face show the quality of the intellect. A small, narrow forehead relates to a practical thinker who can come up with quick and easy solutions to problems. A broad, open or wide forehead indicates a capacity to dream, to scheme and come up with new ideas or concepts.

Thick, full, bushy eyebrows show plenty of stamina and resilience. In this school of thought, plucking eyebrows is understandably not recommended. Thin, patchy eyebrows can indicate someone with less physical vitality and the need to preserve their chi (essential energy or life-force). A broad distance between the eyebrows indicates a tendency towards separation in life: for example, this person may live away from the city or country of their birth, or may undergo separation from immediate family or ancestors.

EARS The ears reflect the overall constitution and in particular, the kidneys. Large ears with fleshy lobes is an indication that the foetus was well nourished inside the womb giving the child strong bones and teeth. Ears that sit flat against the head show good balanced listeners and good judges of the big picture. If one ear, or both ears, protrude slightly it means the person is likely to only hear part or half the discussion, potentially leading to narrow-mindedness or a limited capacity to hear what others have to say. If you pay attention to people’s ears you will start to notice the difference. See if you can match the type of ear to the person’s ability to listen.

did you know? Your face is a mirror of your health. If you imagine your body as a map, your face is part of that map. Acupuncturist Angela Zhang explains that each of our organs corresponds to areas on the face. The eyes show the state of the liver, the nose corresponds to the lungs, and the ears are the window of the kidney. If there is illness in the body, energy stops flowing smoothly and features on the face including shapes and colors, will also change.

JAW If the jaw is square with a protruding chin, the individual is likely to be very practical, driven and stubborn. A narrower, softer jaw line with a chin that comes to a point can show someone with a more delicate constitution who is less practical and more spiritually motivated or aware. A cleft in the chin indicates someone who is motivated, full of energy and quite likely to be stubborn.

The following conditions can be corrected by following the lifestyle suggestions: CONDITION: Oily skin, rashes, redness or deep lines or creases between the eyebrows or itchy or tired eyes indicate a liver imbalance. RECOMMENDATION: Avoid eating two hours before sleeping. Get out of bed close to sunrise as this time of day supports the liver. Spend time in green surroundings, in the park or in the forest. Develop patience. Try yoga, Tai Chi or meditation. Diet: Reduce all animal fats, dairy, eggs, overcooked foods, spices, alcohol and sugar. Increase salads, green veggies and pickles. Chew thoroughly and slowly. CONDITION: Puffiness or dark circles under the eyes indicate a kidney or adrenal imbalance.

CONDITION: Spots, broken capillaries, inflammation or rashes in the cheeks indicates a lung or bronchial imbalance. RECOMMENDATION: Have as much fresh air as possible keeping your home or office well ventilated. Keep more pot plants. Get rid of unresolved issues and try singing as much as possible. Diet: Reduce dairy foods, tropical fruits and juices, baked flour products that include sugar, animal fat and oil, e.g. pastries, breads and cakes. Eat more rice especially well cooked brown rice and green leafy vegetables like broccoli, parsley and cauliflower, add small amounts of ginger root to soups and stews. CONDITION: A blue/green-bruised appearance in the corner of the eyes near the bridge of the nose indicates an imbalance in the pancreas. RECOMMENDATION: Finish any outstanding work or projects. Keep blood sugar levels constant by eating smaller meals more regularly. Spend more time in nature. Diet: Avoid overeating. Avoid cheese and cream, pastry, cakes, sugar and processed foods including chocolate and coffee. Increase sweet fruits and vegetables like onion, cabbage, carrot and pumpkin. Snack on roasted seeds, nuts and raisins or rice cakes. Drink warm fresh apple juice. CONDITION: A dry, cracked, puffy or purple lower lip indicates a colon imbalance. RECOMMENDATION: Remove clutter from your environment. Strengthen the abdomen through exercise. Diet: Chew your food at least 20-30 times every mouthful. Never eat when you are distracted. Reduce raw fruit, raw nuts and raw seeds, cereals, yeast and flour e.g. bread and rolls, overcooked and mushy foods. Eat more basmati or brown rice and root vegetables like carrots, parsnips or turnips with small portions of raw salad daily.

RECOMMENDATION: Sleep earlier and for a longer period, get to bed before 11pm, keep the feet, ankles and midriff well wrapped and warm. Diet: Avoid salt, using only a small amount in cooking. Avoid coffee, cold liquids, ice cream, burnt food and toast or crackers. Eat predominantly warm foods, soups or stews and root vegetables like carrots and turnips as well as bean-based soups. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

HOW LONG TO NAP POWER NAP

10 to 20 minutes for a non-drowsy wake up with a higher sense of alertness and boost in energy. Napping for 10 to 20 minutes means you probably won’t go into any deep rapid eye movement sleep and you will be able to get straight back into effective function once you wake up.

60 minutes of sleep will help restore your memory and sense of recall. You will experience slow wave sleep, a deep type of sleep but will probably have a bit of grogginess when you get up.

CYCLE NAP

HALF NAP

90 minutes of sleep means you will be able to perform functions better and is not likely to leave you feeling groggy.

This will probably last about 30 minutes before you feel alert and restored again.

This time period gives you an opportunity to experience REM sleep, the sleep that brings dreams, it is known as a full cycle sleep and improves creativity, performance and emotional memory.

30 minutes of sleeping might cause you to feel a bit hung over when you wake up.

f you want to attract more love in your life, or are looking for a partner to share your life with, demonstrate the power of intention with an exercise that will create love attraction. Intention is the key to everything we want or desire.

Get two beautiful candles, place them in your room next to your bed. When you light them, know that one represents you and the other represents the love you are expecting.

“I know that intention is a force we all have within us, and we have the power to draw this energy into our lives by being the energy we want to attract.”

Here are some of the symbolic ways you can put the power of intention into action. •

Paint a picture with two hearts on it. Hang it above your bed. Write about what you want on the picture and make love your focus.

Dr. Wayne Dyer, author of The Secrets of the Power of Intention (Hay House) says:

Making space for your love is another good practice. Make sure your space or environment has space for another person. Keep space in your closet for someone else and arrange your house in a way that invites someone in.

He explores intention as an allpervading force in the universe that allows the act of creation to take place. “Intention”, he explains, “is not something you do, but an energy you’re a part of. Not only do you originate from the field of intention, but if you align yourself to it, your desires become fulfilled and you find yourself at peace.”

Buy two small hearts and put them on a leather thong or chain. Wear them around your neck.

I

have always struggled to get my head around fitness. An uncle of mine died when he was 93 years old. He never exercised, was partial to whiskey and pint, and only stopped smoking when he was 60. He simply succumbed to old age in his home surrounded by his six surviving children and 22 great grand children. Bruce Lee on the other hand was as fit as a racehorse, and as lethal a man as you’ll ever find. Yet he died suddenly from a blood clot on the brain, aged just 32. Hell, recently a professional football player died of a heart attack while playing. So forgive my ‘cautious’ approach to exercise. Believe me, I have nothing against it, and I appreciate the virtues of a healthy body especially of the female variety! But I have never set foot inside a gym, and I don’t plan to either. I just don’t think going to gym is my kind of thing. The thought of dragging my lardy lump around a gym filled with sweaty beautiful people panics me. So, I resort to sporadic, more anonymous, lonelier pursuits like a brisk walk or a jog along the Promenade, or the river near to where I live. And I have an on-off relationship with the Canadian Mounties morning exercise regime as well. But before you go thinking, ‘You’re just plain lazy! And who are you to tell us about exercise regimes then?’ – I am not lazy… just disinterested, and I put it down to not having found anything that would intrigue me enough to want to stick to it. Until now. One sunny afternoon while walking along the Camps Bay beachfront, I spotted a group of men and woman standing in a circle. They wore loose white trousers; the men were bare-chested and the women wore t-shirts. Some of the men and women played strange bow-shaped instruments and African drums while chanting, charging the warm evening air with a sense of sweaty mystery. At first I thought it might be a Hare-Krishna gathering, but upon closer inspection I saw two men inside the circle involved in what appeared to be a mock battle with elaborate high kicks, airborne attacks and stealthy evasive moves. Not once did they make contact - in fact, silhouetted against the backdrop of a faultless sunset over the Atlantic, the whole gathering revealed itself as a theatrical balletic expression. The movements were complex and seemed strenuous, but the men and women were

extraordinarily agile making the efforts seems almost elegant. I had stumbled upon an exhibition class of Abadá Capoeira. I spotted a familiar face amongst the Capoeiristas. Although we’ve never met, Marcio Lopez and I sometimes watch football at Scrumpy Jack in Observatory. So when I saw him there a few weeks later, I asked him about Capoeira. Instructor Beleza, as he is known to his students, runs Abadá Capoeira, an international non-profit organization aimed at promoting Afro-Brazilian culture through Capoeira. The organization has a presence in 35 countries worldwide and boasts around 50 000 members. He went on to explain that Capoeira is, at its heart, a social activity with roots deep in Afro-Brazilian slave culture. It is said the wealthy landowners, fearing insurrection, banned the slaves from practicing any kind of fighting techniques. So they disguised their activities by introducing music and singing. The circle I saw is called a ‘Roda’ and is reminiscent of tribal gathering around a fire in faraway Africa. But it came to serve as a way of hiding ‘the game’ happening at its centre. The ‘Roda’ also consists of musicians who used instruments with African origins. Capoeira has developed into a graceful, acrobatic, stylized, and interactive ‘game’ of attack and evasive actions. It requires balance, agility, rhythm, and extreme control. Emphasis on freedom of expression and the intrinsic value of each individual continue to be important aspects of Capoeira. As a form of Plyometric exercise involving jumping, bounding and other high impact exercises, Capoeira focuses on maximizing the stretch reflex of the muscles and promoting physical strength, endurance and flexibility through dynamic aerobic movement. “Capoeira is a remedy.” So said a revered master, a few centuries ago. A later student added, “But more than that, it’s a pharmacy.” As a fitness regime, Capoeira is ideal for men, women and children of school going age. It is an interactive fun ‘game’ and a great stress reliever. It is a dance and an art form. But it’s also a serious form of martial art and as such an excellent confidence builder. Capoeiristas are graded on their level of skill defined by the colour of a chord worn around the

waist - the lowest being Yellow and the highest White.

Capoeira schools can be found in most cities in South Africa. The Abadá Capoeira runs classes throughout the Cape Town area, and even at under privileged schools on the Cape Flats. To find out more about Capoeira, the class times, venues near you and the rates, visit www.abadacapoeira.org.za

did you know? There are two styles of Capoeira: Capoeira Angola Traditional style. This style is played in a slow pace mostly close to the ground. It is an interactive game with sneaky tricks and theatrical displays by each player, to disguise his/ her real intention and to get the advantage over his/her opponent.

Capoeira Regional Modern style. This style is played at a faster pace, mostly upright. It is a dispute game of powerful kicks, acrobatics, and take-downs executed in high speed. In this style, the player with more athletic prowess gets advantage of the game.

S THAT REALLY MY CHILD?

A little body in full fury is quite a sight, in fact, you could almost swear that your little angel has been abducted by aliens and replaced with a Tasmanian devil. Tantrums are a perfectly natural part of any toddler’s development, and most commonly occur between the ages of one to four. Unfortunately, this means they are inevitable. Your toddler will express a temper tantrum in various different ways, ranging from whining and screaming to throwing things and even holding their breath. So why does your little one transform into an unreasonable flailing mass of inconsolable screams? Well, at that age, the human brain isn’t yet wired for logic and reason. The part of their brain that regulates emotions and governs social behaviour will only begin to develop at around age four. The frustration of not being able to process emotions or communicate feelings leads to an adrenaline fuelled freak-out. The body takes over and all that adrenaline needs to escape. And so it does, without caring if you’re safely in the privacy of your home or in full view of the public’s prying eyes.

Part of what makes it so difficult to reason with toddlers is that they are engrossed in magical thinking. Magical thinking is how children begin to learn and explore the relationships between cause and effect in their world. Little ones will often make connections that, to you, are completely illogical and frustrating. You may wake up to your gutted toddler furious that you went on an epic adventure to the zoo without her, when in fact it was just a dream.

It is quite a risk to spank a wizard for getting hysterical about his hair. Diana Wynne Jones

Your toddler’s desire to be independent and exercise control in exploring their environment can sometimes directly conflict with your desire to keep them safe and well behaved. This will result in a power struggle that ultimately ends in a tantrum. How you deal with the situation is fundamental to how future behaviour could develop. By giving in too often or too easily, while it may seem the most peaceful option at the time, could set your child up for a lifetime of pouting and difficult relationships.

AVOIDING THE TEMPER TRAP

did you know? Scientists analysing the sound of tantrums have concluded that there are no ‘phases of a tantrum’ – in fact, the sound of anger and sadness occurs at the same time. Co-author Michael Potegal says, ‘Screaming and yelling and kicking often go together. Throwing things and pulling and pushing things tend to go together. Combinations of crying, whining, falling to the floor and seeking comfort — also hang together.

Prevention is always preferable – not only do tantrums leave you, the parent, shattered, but your child also experiences a range of negative emotion, not the least being embarrassment. Avoid the onslaught by following these tips:

Be prepared Children love repeats and if they’ve done something once, they’re going to expect to do it again. So, you need to think ahead and communicate. Remember what you did the last time you went to a particular place and if it’s not going to happen again, say so – for example, if you’re going to a shopping centre where there’s a jumping castle and the last time you were there you allowed your child to spend a good hour bouncing about, make sure you explain you’re in a rush and that there isn’t time to go on the jumping castle. It’s far better to chat about the fun that was had the time before and explain it’s not going to be the same this time, than it is to hope your darling won’t remember.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Listen Generally, you’ll be given ample warning of your child’s expectations. A small expression of want or desire will be made long before a tantrum comes to the fore. Listening allows you to talk about the desire long before your child is even aware of it being denied.

Explain Children need to be given fair warning of what is going to happen in their lives. Take the time to explain what you are going to do, when you are going to do it and the events that will happen leading up to each incident in their day; and then listen carefully to responses. For example, explain that when you get home, you will make dinner, then you will all eat dinner together, then you will have a bath, then it will be time to go outside for a few minutes to say goodnight to the garden. After that, it will be time to brush teeth, read a story and then sleep. By explaining what’s going to happen, it less likely your little one will moan about the events – and remember to listen to any note of rebellion while you’re explaining so that you can reason with them before their frustration reaches a no-go area.

Keep your word If you promise your little one a trip to the park, best you keep your word. Setting expectations and not meeting them is a perfect recipe for tantrums. It’s better to surprise your little one with treats than to make a promise you may not be able to keep. In the same vein, if you say that you’re going home after one more turn on the slide then do so. They will soon know your limits and that you mean business.

Distraction If your toddler is fixated on an activity or play thing, try to suggest something even better. Pick an activity you know they enjoy and suggest you do it together, like reading their favourite story or drawing a picture.

Choices Giving your child a choice of little things is an excellent way of allowing them to feel in control. Saying things like “Which do you want to do first; put on your PJ’s or brush your teeth?” will help to avoid uncontrollable power struggles later on.

SURVIVING THE MONSTER

If all your efforts have failed in avoiding the tantrum, here’s are some tips to survive the storm:

Don’t Panic However difficult, it’s important to keep your cool. Getting frustrated and yelling back at your howling child will only antagonise them and prolong the tantrum. If you find your blood boiling and you feel a scream bubbling in your throat, calmly take your own time-out – but do take a moment to explain why you are walking away and to stay in sight of your child so they don’t feel they have been abandoned.

Choose your battles Giving in might seem like the only way to soothe your little monster but muster your strength and don’t give in to demands. This is a quick-fix solution with long term effects. Giving in to tantrums will only teach them that this is a great way to get what they want. However, try in the moment to understand where their frustration is coming from and apologise where necessary.

Leave the scene Removing your child from the scene of the tantrum is a good way to calm them down – especially if the tantrum occurs in a public place. Walk them to the bathroom or the car and calmly explain that their behaviour is unacceptable and why you have taken them away.

Time-out Once they’re removed from the scene and you have coolly explained why, give them the opportunity to wind down and join the party when they’re calm. Leave them in a quiet spot to cool off and they will come back to you when they are ready.

Acknowledge the frustration Respecting your child’s emotions will help them to learn that their feelings do matter. Try saying “That must have made you feel sad” or “I understand that you are feeling mad”. This will help your little one better articulate how they are feeling in future frustrating situations. The bottom line is that temper tantrums are a natural course of growing and learning. How you deal with them will determine how both you and your child emerge from the fray. Keeping a cool head and understanding that it’s a result of frustrated emotion will go a long way in easing the tension.

Teaching kids love values By Kathy Brüggemann, editor of www.mommymatters.co.za

T

here’s no denying the heart shaped cards and chocolates and teddies at this time of the year, but as conscious parents, we need to be aware that for our kids in school the emphasis, of what should be a day of showing love and kindness, might be on popularity, and their value to others could easily be measured by the number of valentines they get, or the humiliation if they don’t. Although the focus of this day is romantic love and kids will pick that up from all the advertising, how do we give kids an alternative understanding to what might be making them feel anxious, embarrassed and overstimulated by all the social competition? Firstly, be sure what this holiday means for you. Is it a day that’s important to you? Do you expect gifts or cards from family members? Do you give them? We transmit values to our children through our behaviour. If we celebrate Valentine’s Day by exchanging expensive gifts, it is likely our children will want to do the same. Maybe it’s time for us to revaluate ourselves first. We need to give them an alternative to the sexiness and popularity messages they are receiving, and let them know that Valentine’s Day is about the kind of love that is expressed through kindness. It’s never too early to help children express love and friendship in ways that transcend materialism. Most children will know their parents love them and sometimes show it by doing nice things for them. Chances are they are also familiar with the experience of feeling good about themselves after having done something kind for another. Because young children are concrete thinkers, it’s hard for them to understand a concept that can’t be represented by objects. But by watching you give gifts of kindness, time, compassion, respect, and thoughtfulness to the people you love, not just on holidays but throughout the year, they will learn that “I love you” means so much more than three words inscribed on a candy heart.

Play hopscotch Teach your kids games they can play outdoors rather than one’s that require time spent staring at a screen. Hopscotch is one idea. Start off by drawing a hopscotch grid with chalk on the ground. Make each square big enough to fit one foot. Begin with the first player throwing a flat stone onto square one. It must land in the square without touching the border or bouncing out. If it doesn’t, the player loses his or her turn and has to pass the stone to the next player. Presuming it does, the player hops on one leg from square to square but jumping over the one with the stone in. The player is always on one leg except when two squares are next to each other, when this comes up both feet are put down at the same time, one in each adjacent square. At any time, if the player steps on a line; hops on the wrong square, or steps out of the square, you lose your turn. When you get to the end of the grid, hop 180 degrees turning around and then hopping back the way you came. Pick up the stone on your way back. Then, skip over that square. Next the stone is thrown onto square two and the process begins again. The aim is to go through all the squares.

DONATE YOUR BREAST MILK

Milk Matters is an organisation that provides pasteurised, donor breastmilk to hospitals for vulnerable, premature, babies who cannot get the breastmilk they need from their own mothers.

T

hey focus on the tiniest babies of under 1.5kg, who thrive on the irreplaceable nutrients, growth factors and antibodies in human milk. Most importantly these babies are not exposed to the debilitating and potentially fatal risk of necrotising enterocolitis, associated with formula feeding and prematurity. Necrotising enterocolitis is a serious illness that causes the bowel to go gangrenous and can potentially be life threatening. Providing these babies with breast milk is the single most effective way of preventing these complications.

did you know? 50ml of breast milk a day could save a baby’s life.

62

A doctor at a recipient hospital said, “You have restored hope and life, which otherwise may have been lost. We see the miracle of life unfolding before our eyes as these babies grow and develop. This miracle is realised because of your milk. The walls laced with thank you cards, smiling pictures of toddlers and children bear testimony to the lives you have saved and enriched.”

Terri, a second time donor comments: “The incredible experience of Gabi’s premature birth gave us the unexpected opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of others. It is so sad that so many new mothers with a surplus of breast milk are unaware of the joy of being a milk donor.”

Most mothers are able to donate breastmilk. By expressing extra milk for another baby you will not deprive your baby in any way - in fact, expressing increases milk production. Donating mothers express a little extra breast milk and freeze it in sterile jars provided by Milk Matters. The frozen breast milk can then be delivered to Milk Matters depots situated in various areas. Where this is not possible Milk Matters will arrange to collect the donated milk. Each donor mother is also asked to complete a screening form and to undergo a HIV and Hepatitis B test. These tests are done at no cost to the donor mother.

Food &

LOVE

By Astrid Kille

Beautifully prepared food is a fabulous way to demonstrate love. With this in mind, and with love as our theme for the month, we chose to share some of our favourite cookbooks with you. We also have favourite herbs from Margaret Roberts and we couldn’t resist including a great Bridget Jones story. Another Week In The Kitchen by Karen Dudley (Quivertree)

Karen’s first book A Week in the Kitchen was so fantastic it became my kitchen bible. Her Woodstock restaurant The Kitchen is also one of my favourite haunts. Her second book Another Week in the Kitchen is just as compelling and filled with mouthwatering recipes so easy to make. Fresh ingredients and interesting grains are used in endless delicious combinations. I love the casual photographic style of her books and the heartfelt stories that accompany the recipes. Karen’s love of food jumps off the pages and is infectious. Paging through her book reveals one inspiration after another. Try out her restaurant The Kitchen and after that you will definitely want one of her books.

The Magic Of Superfoods with Rawlicious Recipes for Radiant Health. Peter and Beryn Daniel (Soaring Free) Over 100 superfood recipes are featured in this magical recipe journey. Think

raw cacao, lucuma, mesquite, spirulina, camu and other powerfully nutrient filled foods in combinations of high taste. The way we eat has changed considerably in the last ten years - we have become very conscious of what we put into our bodies and the way we prepare our food. The Magic of Superfoods has the most beautiful illustrations demonstrating an almost spiritual awakening of food. Different food is introduced with compelling titles for example “The Magic of Berries” comes with a comprehensive explanation of what they are good for. When you make up a recipe you immediately know the benefit of what you are eating. In my opinion for many years food has been misused and misunderstood, enough to allow diseases like diabetes to take over. Superfood is a great solution to restore vibrant health and to preserve both ourselves and the planet. I highly recommend the Chocolate Ganache tart with Superfood crust on page 232 – Yum!

My 100 Favorite Herbs by Margaret Roberts (RandomStruik)

We all know and love Margaret Roberts, she is the epitome of health and a landmark gardener – a maestro of all things natural. If you are into natural healing or need plant inspiration, you will get both from any one of Margaret Roberts’ books.

everything you need to live life well

My 100 Favorite Herbs is an A to Z guide with a double page spread featuring each herb. It tells you how to propagate, plant, grow and harvest. The best part though, is the recipes. Not only are they for the table but for medications and cosmetics as well. If you are thinking of growing your own herbs, this is a fantastic new guide and will certainly enhance your cooking skills.

Bridget Jones Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding (Jonathan Cape)

Here’s one for Love. In true Bridget Jones style this book will make you laugh, cry and believe in romance all over again. In Mad About the Boy we find our diarist in North London in 2013. She’s 51, and relying on familiar friends like Jude, a character who practically runs the city and Tom, a psychologist to get her through her ‘Tsunami of Darkness’. Bridget and Mark married and had children. They were happy – but now Mark is dead. It is through Bridget’s re-entry into the world of dating and sex that Helen Fielding works her magic. Sharp, humorous and snappy narration is at times genuinely moving while Bridget negotiates her way through her new circumstances. Expect plenty of new and inspiring material for a belief in life after 50. It’s an easy read and especially good for all the romantics out there. All these books are available from Exclusive Books

"

When we free ourselves from the shackles of societal ‘age-ism’, and free ourselves from our own self-limiting ideas about becoming older, we can then honour ourselves fully.” Debra Metelits from Wise Older Woman: Growing in Grace and Sass.

Love getting older

In a society obsessed with youth and anti-ageing, have we lost perspective on loving ourselves at any age? According to Dr Bruce Goldberg, author of Look Younger, Live Longer (Llewellyn) anti-ageing or should we say ‘youthing’ can be wired into your consciousness with a good dose of awareness.

Your mind”, Goldberg maintains, “is the most powerful weapon against premature ageing.” To live in this concept he recommends focusing on the body-mind connection. This can increase the health and vitality of our organs. Consciousness, he believes, is the true foundation of all we know and perceive. “The beliefs you hold, whether deliberately chosen or indoctrinated, create a model for interpreting and structuring reality.” This is your personal reality paradigm or, more simply, your viewpoint towards life. When we are locked into a certain viewpoint it limits our capacity to observe, integrate, predict and act. Most people accept and live with the idea they are going to grow old and die. We often believe that because a parent had a particular disease, we will die from the same disease. Experiments show that if we can change our beliefs, we can change the state of our health. By expanding our awareness to the point where anything is possible we can expand our consciousness to defy statistics. Shifting perceptions can slow down the ageing process just as the placebo effect can cure patients. Besides our thoughts attitude, beliefs, reactions and assumptions all play a part in creating your reality. Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements says, “Ninety-five percent of the beliefs we have stored in our minds are nothing but lies, and we suffer because we believe all these lies.” One of these lies that we believe and practice and reinforce is that getting older is getting uglier. We then judge ourselves and others, trying to hold on to the way we were.

did you know? According to Dr Bruce Goldberg, our awareness through consciousness creates the biochemistry and anatomy of our body. It is the forgetting of our true consciousness nature that results in ageing.

Use Goldberg’s 10 principles to work with your consciousness and slow down the ageing process: 1. Eliminate the tendency to judge others and especially yourself. 2. Do not seek external approval. 3. Live life in the present moment and appreciate it fully. Let go of the past and do not worry about the future. 4. Let go of all anger. When you do this you will facilitate your own healing.

Eco Diva Nicole’s 6 Anti-ageing tips While there’s no stopping the passage of time, there are steps you can take to delay some of the less desirable effects it has on your appearance and your health. While on some mornings you may feel every one of your years, our growing understanding of the importance of healthy living, diet and nutrition means you don’t necessarily have to look every one of your years. Eco Diva and co-owner of www.vitology.co.za Nicole Sherwin offers 6 fabulous anti-aging tips.

Ester-C (Vitamin C)

5. Be love motivated rather than fearmotivated. 6. Be at one and have acceptance of the infinite scheme of things. Practice hypnosis and meditation to attain this goal. 7. Eliminate negative foods, drink, drugs, and toxic emotions from your life. 8. Pay attention to your intuition and spiritual insights. 9. Remember that everyone you meet, whether the meeting is a positive or negative experience, is merely a projection of your consciousness. It is what you most dislike that you most deny in yourself. What you most deny is what you most wish for in yourself. Use this to guide your spiritual growth. 10. Empower yourself in every way you can. Goldberg maintains, “Conscious mental activity can affect the things of the physical world – including the organs, tissues, and cells that compose our bodies. Mind is an irrefutably genuine factor in the process by which health and disease unfold themselves, and this includes the process of ageing.”

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Despite Vitamin C’s notoriety for boosting our immune systems, what you might not know is it’s also involved in collagen production and helps protect skin cells from sun damage. Ester C is an esterified form of Vitamin C and is more absorbable and easier on the digestive system. It also helps to keep colds and flu away and is a great anti-oxidant.

Omega 3 While ‘fat’ is typically a four-letter word in the dieting world, Omega-3 is a good fat. Healthy fats keep the skin, muscles, tissues and organs lubricated, helping to maintain the integrity of the cell membrane, which keeps toxins out of the body and may even help protect against sun damage.

Super pH Balance (from vitology.co.za) Keeping the body’s pH in balance is vitally important in staying healthy and disease- free. It also helps prevent early ageing of skin, hair, nails and organs. Keeping acid out the body maintains youthful glow, less wrinkles and increased energy and vitality.

Vit B Complex Vitamin B complex has several anti-aging properties as well as anti-stress properties. It actually helps you stay healthier by providing a strong, unbroken barrier against viruses, bacteria and other antigens.

Water Drink 6-8 glass of filtered water per day. This will help to flush out any toxins. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice to your water and you will have an instant alkalizing effect on the body, naturally.

Rest & Relaxation Most importantly, live a balanced life. Get some downtime from your busy, stressful life and create space and time for yourself. Opt for activities like walking in nature, meditation, yoga, painting or any pursuit that keeps you in your calm zone. www.ecodiva.co.za facebook.com/ecodivanicole Twitter@ecodiva www.vitology.co.za

While our culture highly values youth, according to Proverbs 16:31, the gray hair of an older individual is a crown of glory, attained by a righteous life. A leading gerontologist cites the Japanese concept of value of self-worth (ikigai) as crucial to growing old positively. More than self-worth, Ikigai is one’s reason for being, the discovery of which brings satisfaction and meaning to life. Everyone, according to the Japanes, has an ‘ikigai’. Finding it requires a deep and often lengthy search of self. This search is regarded as highly important, as the discovery of one’s ikigai brings satisfaction and meaning to life. Life purpose and satisfaction stops the feeling of resignation that brings on ageing. Lecturer Matsumoto runs a class on Japanese culture in America. She says her students are intrigued by the concept of ‘ikigai’ which has distinct differences to the American reality of older people who are often stereotyped as frail, lonely and disengaged from society. Think about our ageing rockers Mick Jagger, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend and more, rocking their hearts out, some close to 70 years of age. They still perform with passion and abandon indifferent to how many wrinkles, gray hair or scars they have. All of them have a lifetime of following a strong purpose and passion living with abundant creativity. The point being that a strong life mission and personal accomplishment can make ageing less traumatic. Dorothy Sander, journalist from the Huffington Post says,”You can choose to be a legend in your own life by choosing to live it fully. We can choose to follow our hearts, our passions, our creative drive, whatever it is and wherever it leads, thumbing our noses at society’s expectations and our own”. Perhaps it is all about ceasing to count the years or at least stopping making them count, and starting to live from the inside out, rather than focusing on the outside.

Beautifully scented soy candles that double as a healing skin balm Presented in attractive boxes, the heavenly scented candles are a ‘green friendly’ absolutely natural product with more than just ambient appeal. Soy is a longer burning alternative to standard wax that excludes paraffin oil and harmful chemicals. As a by-product of soybean agriculture it also has renewable and green-friendly qualities. These candles can be used as a nourishing moisturiser by massaging the melted wax into the skin. As soybean burns at a lower temperature than normal wax you can pour the wax onto your hand and massage it onto your skin.

thoughts & emotions

The ultimate TOOL FOR LIFE

Along the journey of life are countless challenges, these often include anxiety, stress, heartbreak, depression, they could include personality disorders, trauma, abuse, existential crises. Low self-esteem is a huge issue for many. We have emotions and feelings, we have thoughts and convictions; we have situations and events that guide us or challenge us. There is truly an art to living.

B

ut we don’t usually get taught ‘the art of living’. We aren’t schooled in how to deal with emotions, or how to overcome difficulties or knowing the right path to take. We aren’t often able to recognise when our subconscious has limiting agendas we don’t know about. One of the most popular modern movements helping people tremendously is that of ‘mindfulness’. This practice generates more information about the self – a way of being aware of all the aspects and facets of body, mind and spirit that affect the way we are in the world and in our lives. Inspired by Dr Daniel Siegel’s Wheel of Awareness, Psychologist David Wilkinson has developed a lifeskill tool that illuminates true self-awareness, a tool that helps overcome the endless challenges we face during life. From past traumas to insomnia,

74

learn this comprehensive ‘mindfulness’ tool and see how it changes your way of dealing with challenges. Many people believe in the power of the mind, and there are thousands of stories of how people have overcome incredible odds just by using mind-over-matter tenets – from cancer to changing the course of their lives. So, most people believe the mind is powerful, but most people aren’t quite able to truly tap in to that power.

“The human mind is a relationship and embodied process that regulates the flow of energy and information” . – Daniel Siegel

everything you need to live life well

MIND CONTROL It’s got to do with control – how can you control your thoughts and emotions? How can you learn to focus on one thing without a whole world of thoughts interrupting? Psychologist David Wilkinson has taken the groundbreaking work of Dr Daniel Siegel’s Wheel of Awareness and expanded on the concept to create a method designed to literally change your life.

THE ESSENTIAL FOUR Dr Siegel’s Wheel of Awareness is depicted as a drawing, consisting of a central hub, which represents our receptive awareness – stillness and calmness can be found at its epicentre. Spokes move out from the central hub, representing the focus of our attention. These spokes reach toward a rim and the rim contains aspects which we can choose to become aware of and interact with. There are four basic ways in which you can become more in control of your thoughts and relate to:

feel well

thoughts & emotions

1.

2.

3.

4.

Five senses: taste, smell, touch, hearing and vision – how you use these to communicate the outer world to your receptive awareness. Brain & body interaction: This isn’t something most people are aware of and yet it happens every second of every day. By being more aware of this interaction, you can gain ‘me awareness’. Mobilising mental activity: this type of activity can either be controlled and productive, or disorganised. If mental activity is disorganised, psychotic conditions can arise, such as paranoia, obsessive compulsive disorder, delusional thinking, etc. By being aware of your thinking patterns, you can encounter peace and order. Early childhood relationships and how they shape the brain’s neurobiology. Good relationships can assist in healing brains damaged by traumatic events and inappropriate relationships.

TAPPING IN The first steps in the process involve relaxing the body. Past traumas can be stored in the body and compromise your immune system, so learning to relax your body is an essential step in healing. True relaxation takes a little practise and involves mindful awareness of how the brain interacts with the body. Only a small percentage of what our five senses pick up is actually brought to our awareness – it’s possible to tune out events or to become fully aware of them – everyone is able to do this to some extent. For example, concentrating in a school class is good as it saves having to study later. Tuning out a traumatic event can also be a constructive coping mechanism as it can be a protective “screen”. Use your five senses effectively by becoming aware of what is important and dismissing what is clutter, irrelevant or excessively painful. Your mind doesn’t merely constitute the grey matter that makes up your brain, it’s also used to convey the notion of information which symbolises something other than itself; it, together with energy flows provide the capacity to carry out an action; it also interacts with the cells and organs of the body and shows that both information and energy are dynamic and change over time as we regulate them. The mind is a relational process – energy and information flows between and among people and also within ourselves. Getting a sense of the complexity of your body and how it works

with your brain helps you to gain greater ‘me awareness’.

MINDSIGHT Dr Daniel Siegel coined the term ‘mindsight’ to describe how the areas of the brain can be mobilised together with the body to act in unison. The brain has three general functional areas: •

Brainstem: located at the top of the spine, this area mobilises the fightflight-freeze responses Limbic cortex: primarily involved with memory and emotion, this is located in the centre of the brain Prefrontal cortex: responsible for higher thinking functions such as impulse control or focus, located at the front and top of the brain.

When you are in danger, the prefrontal areas of your brain shut down; this could result in what’s known as ‘stuckness’ – the inability to extricate yourself from emotionally painful things to move towards more positive or realistic thinking. The Wheel of Awareness teaches you how to free up this “stuckness” and become able to use the full power of your mind.

USING YOUR NEW CONNECTIONS To gain greater awareness of yourself, you do need to identify the immediate issues that you are currently dealing with – this is based on your perception of the prevailing issue and can be accessed through: 1.

2.

3.

Observation – Checking out factual events, feelings, thinking, decisions taken, actions carried out, consequences of those actions, ways you think about yourself and others in these issues, etc as these relate to the issue you are considering; Objective review – all the aspects observed are processed by considering a specific set of filters; Openness – during the observation and objective review, an attitude of openness is adopted so you can be fully prepared to change currently held viewpoints and adjust to new and better ways of seeing issues.

involved in your prevailing issue’s perception is. This is truly enlightening, as it takes you away from a one-sided perception to a multi-faceted view and allows you to enter a realm of actuality, rather than any false perceptions you may have.

REBOOTED SYSTEM Questions to be considered when discovering a great awareness of your self holistically are: Bodily Regulation: Is your body peaceful? Attuned Communication: Do you have peace in both internal and relational communications? Emotional Balance: Are you at peace with yourself and the world relating to the issues you have considered? Fear modulation: Have you resolved anxieties and do you have a plan to deal with real fears? Response Flexibility: Do you feel you are aware of the range of possible outcomes and that you have the means to address these effectively? Insight: Do you have a good understanding of all possible options for actions and also what to do if outcomes are not optimal? Empathy: Do you understand the feelings and desires of others who are affected by your issues and have you taken appropriate/ fair measures to deal with their feelings/ desires? Morality: Are decisions you have taken moral? Do you feel you are and will be acting truthfully and fairly? Intuition: Are you actively meditating and/or praying for continued guidance? It is in fact relatively simple to learn how to become more self aware, and once learned, it becomes an integral and natural part of your daily life, allowing you to live more fully and more authentically. For in-depth training on this potentially life-changing process, or for information on workshops happening in your area contact counselling@absamail.co.za

Using the three filters above, you can use those as a tool to switch focus on what your perception is towards what each person
