Marli Moore: Well, from when I was a teenager I made lifestyle changes that I’ve kept until now. These are: drink at least 2 litres of water everyday and exercise as much as possible. The same old story we’ve heard all these years still holds truth...everything in moderation and lots of fruits and veggies. Oh, and 8hrs sleep a night! Christian Meissner: To live life well I focus on pursuing a healthy lifestyle. This includes both a physical and mental aspect. A good measure and strong discipline is the key to success. Within these parameters I eat a well balanced diet and have a strict gym routine, while also allowing time to myself to grow spiritually. It’s important to me to surround myself with people who are good company and have a positive outlook on life.

Have your cake and eat it W

hat makes Wellness cakes special? A lot. We use the best, freshest ingredients. We never compromise on quality. And we make sure you can have your cake and eat it whether you’re looking for something raw, vegan, gluten-free or banting-friendly.

How do we do it?

Not just better

We use nuts and seeds to create gluten-free, banting-friendly bases. Butter is replaced with coconut oil or nut butters. Dairy milk is replaced with almond, rice, or quinoa ‘milk’. Instead of eggs we often use chia or flax seeds. Then, we use raw honey, agave, or maple syrup instead of cane sugar.

Our cakes aren’t only better for you than other cakes. We make sure each of our creations contains something that’s good for you – whether that’s nuts, a superfood, fresh fruit or cacao or another ingredient that inspires us at the time.

CHEESECAKE Now available at Wellness Café on Kloof in Cape Town. Our selection changes often. Be sure to drop by so you don’t miss out on something delicious.

MEET OUR SUPPLIER

SCHECKTER’S ORGANIC BEVERAGES

Toby Scheckter, the founder of Scheckter’s Organic Beverages was raised on his family’s organic farm, Laverstoke Park, one of the world’s leading organic farms based in the UK. Involvement in the day-today activities of running this farm gave Toby a deep understanding and appreciation for the process involved in organic produce. Recognising that there must be people like him looking for a healthier alternative, Toby and his brother Freddie spent two years scouring the worlds best quality functional organic ingredients to create the Worlds First 100% Natural, Organic and FairTrade approved organic drink. “We wanted to create a 100% natural, organic product that tastes great and gives you a sustained mental and physical energy boost. A lot of research, development, testing and passion went into creating Scheckter’s OrganicEnergyTM. We made no compromises when sourcing the highest quality organic ingredients and made sure we used no artificial

colours, no artificial flavours and no artificial preservatives. What we ended up with is the world’s first 100% natural, organic and FairTrade approved energy drink.”

How does our organic energy drink work? All energy drinks have ‘effective ingredients’. Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy drink is different because our ‘effective ingredients’ are 100% natural and organic. A unique patented combination of functional extracts from organic raw green coffee beans, organic guarana and organic green tea give the physical and mental endurance. Organic pomegranate, organic elderberry and organic lemon juices are rich in antioxidants. We lightly sweeten Scheckter’s with raw organic cane sugar in the Original and use Low Gi agave nectar in the lite. So you see, the ‘effective ingredients’ in our drink are powered by nature.

What effect will this organic energy drink have on me? Each can of Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy contains the perfect combination of organic and natural ingredients to provide sustained energy deliverance. Compared to the harsh synthetic caffeine used in most energy drinks our particular blend of 100% natural ingredients of the organic energy drink are released slowly over a longer period of time, creating a sustainable energy lift that avoids the short lift and sudden ‘crash’ of other energy drinks.

SCHECKTER’S ORGANIC ENERGY HISTORY

“I was tired of drinking ordinary energy drinks full of cheap synthetic ingredients I could not pronounce, so I spent two years sourcing the world’s best quality organic ingredients that deliver on taste, sustainability and also give a powerful boost of energy.” - Toby Scheckter, Founder

Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy Original is FairTrade certified.

Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Name: Lever du Soleil (sunrise) Ingredients • • •

1 bar spoon Orange and Ginger marmalade 50ml Scheckter’s Organic energy 2 dashes bitters

Glass: Martini Garnish: Grapefruit slice Method: Add, Marmalade, Scheckter’s and bitters to shaker, add cubed ice, shake until chilled serve into a Martini glass, garnish with grapefruit slice.

What is FairTrade? FairTrade is about better prices, better working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices for the farmers, FairTrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Scheckter's Organic Beverages support FairTrade.

When starting our business, our philosophy was and still is quite simple: With the earth providing all the natural, greattasting ingredients we need, we believe in harnessing these ingredients nature has given us. We asked ourselves, would we rather consume artificial ingredients manufactured in a lab or great tasting effective ingredients derived from nature? Our answer is in the can!

For enquiries contact Lauren van Wyk lvanwyk@schecktersorganic.com

We are dedicated to creating a great tasting drink, made with 100% natural, organic and FairTrade ingredients. That means a great tasting energy drink that has no artificial ingredients. Our Great Taste award winning OrganicEnergy Original and our 33% lower calorie, low GI Lite products are great any time of day.

VEGETABLES

FRUIT

Asparagus

Avocado

One of the best vegetables for clearing arteries, asparagus has fibre, minerals, and vitamins like K, B1, B2, C, and E. Asparagus can help lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots. Try it steamed or make up the recipe below.

Swap mayonnaise, salad dressing and even butter for avocado. You can mash it into a butter or simply slice it. You can even use it blended into raw cacao to make chocolate mousse. Studies show eating avocado daily improves blood cholesterol levels, decreases triglycerides and LDL and increases HDL – the ‘good’ cholesterol that helps keep arteries clear. Avo helps keep blood flowing smoothly and has protein and fibre with multiple amounts of vitamins and antioxidants.

ROASTED ASPARAGUS Makes 3-4 portions

INGREDIENTS 2 BUNCHES OF ASPARAGUS OLIVE OIL 1/2 LEMON 1 CLOVE OF GARLIC SLICED HIMALAYAN SALT BLACK PEPPER FRESHLY GRATED PARMESAN CHEESE

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees Celsius (make sure it’s hot) 2. Lay out your asparagus on a baking tray. 3. Lightly cover the spears with olive oil. Sprinkle them with chopped garlic and add salt and pepper. 4. Roast for about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and grate lemon zest over them. Squeeze lemon juice liberally and sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan.

Broccoli Broccoli is a super healthy fibre rich option good for preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and hardening of arteries. Roast it, steam it or make it one of your main salad ingredients. If you blend it for a few seconds it will sprinkle evenly and you don’t have to bite into big chunks. Broccoli should be an almost everyday addition to your diet.

Spinach You can’t eat too much spinach. It’s packed with fibre, potassium, and folate – all of these help lower blood pressure and keep arteries clear. Recent research shows that one serving a day of folate-rich greens like spinach can lower homocysteine levels - a known risk factor in cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis. Baby spinach leaves make a good salad, they also juice well. You can steam it, add it to soups or any kind of stew, casserole or stirfry. Surprisingly, spinach is a great additive when baking chocolate cakes or brownies.

Watermelon L-citrulline is an amino acid in watermelon that helps keep arteries clear by lowering blood pressure and decreasing inflammation. Similar to pomegranate, it naturally stimulates the production of nitric oxide, which improves artery health and blood pressure.

inflammation. The temptation is to eat too many though so store them in small quantities.

Chia Seeds Chia seeds are phenomenal when it comes to nutrients. You only need a tablespoon or two to benefit from the fibre and alphalinolenic content. They’re especially good for boosting a high-energy lifestyle. It’s important to soak them first before you eat them. Add a teaspoon to a glass of spring water, squeeze in some lemon and a few mint leaves and sip slowly. Add two tablespoons to yoghurt overnight for a healthy breakfast. They’re also great for making desserts. Use the recipe below for a sweet treat. If you like rice pudding or sago, you will love this healthy version.

COCONUT CHIA SEED DESSERT Makes 3-4 portions 2 hours soaking time

INGREDIENTS

Pomegranate Antioxidant phytochemicals protect the circulatory system from oxidation, which is a cause of plaque build-up and blood clotting. Pomegranate kernels are wonderful sprinkled over salads.

Cranberries

1 ½ CUPS LIGHT COCONUT MILK 3 TABLESPOONS CHIA SEEDS 1 ½TBSP SWEETENER (HONEY, XYLITOL) ½ TSP CINNAMON ½ TSP VANILLA BEAN PASTE (OR EXTRACT) ¼ TSP GROUND NUTMEG OR GROUND CARDAMOM

Cranberries have huge antioxidant punch. If you’re drinking them juiced, choose a pure organic variety. They’re easily available in frozen form and make a handy smoothie ingredient. You can also blend them into a sorbet or add them to your breakfast yoghurt and muesli.

Put all the ingredients in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours. The Chia seeds will become gelatinous and turn your mixture into a pudding consistency. You can keep it for up to 3 days.

SEEDS & NUTS

OILS & FATS

Flaxseed

Olive Oil

Flaxseed is another ingredient you should keep handy and use daily. The only tricky thing about it, is you need to freshly grind it every few days and keep it refrigerated. It’s one of the best sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and known for its ability to reduce blood-pressure and inflammation, helping keep arteries clear of obstructions and improving overall heart health. Sneak it into salad dressings, soups, stews, smoothies or sprinkle over veggies.

Coconut Oil

Nuts Raw nuts, especially almonds and walnuts are high in monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E, fibre, and protein. They’re a source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) – and can help improve blood pressure and reduce www.wellnesswarehouse.com

According to recent studies, olive oil can actually reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular illnesses by up to 41% when used regularly. Essential fatty acids have a positive effect on cholesterol levels and oxidative stress in the blood stream. It’s essential to buy 100% extra virgin olive oil, as many versions are blended and not as healthy.

For so long we’ve been told fats are bad for us. This fat though is quite the opposite. It has a high concentration of medium-chain triglycerides and lauric acid said to improve blood coagulation and perform antioxidant functions in the blood stream. Both these features lower the risk of heart disease.

Have 2 to 3 tablespoons a day. Cook with it, use it instead of butter or throw it into a smoothie.

SPICES Cinnamon Get into the habit of having at least one teaspoon of cinnamon a day. Find ways to add it to your diet. It’s great for boosting blood, reducing cholesterol levels and preventing plaque build up. Add it to your favourite variety of tea or coffee, or put it in your yoghurt, your breakfast or smoothie. Keep cinnamon visible on your kitchen counter in a shaker bottle as a reminder.

Turmeric Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and very useful in reducing damage to arterial walls. Studies show that curcumin in turmeric can help reduce fatty deposits in the arteries. Use it on roasted butternut or cauliflower or try the milk recipe below.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY TURMERIC MILK Makes 1 portion

INGREDIENTS 1 CUP UNSWEETENED COCONUT, RICE OR ALMOND MILK ¼ OR ½ TSP TURMERIC POWDER 1 TSP COCONUT OIL 3 TWISTS OF GROUND PEPPER ¼ TSP VANILLA ESSENCE HONEY OR STEVIA TO TASTE

Blend all the ingredients together and drink it cold, or gently warm the milk and then blend it together. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon.

GRAINS Swap refined carbs for whole grains. Brown rice, quinoa, barley, and oatmeal are standard choices for improving bloodcholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease. Use this recipe as one of your standards.

HEART BOOSTING QUINOA & CRANBERRY SALAD Makes 4-6 portions Time: 20 minutes

18

INGREDIENTS SALAD

YOUR WELLNESS SHOPPING LIST

¾ CUP QUINOA 1/2 CUP DRIED CRANBERRIES 1/3 CUP CHOPPED WALNUTS 1/3 CUP CHOPPED ALMONDS 1/4 CUP FINELY CHOPPED GREEN ONIONS 2 TABLESPOONS FINELY CHOPPED CELERY 2 TABLESPOONS FINELY CHOPPED RED ONION

DRESSING 2 TBSP RED WINE VINEGAR 1 TBSP LEMON JUICE 1 CLOVE GARLIC, MINCED 1 TSP DIJON MUSTARD 1 TSP XYLITOL OR HONEY 1/3 CUP OLIVE OIL 1/2 TSP GROUND PEPPER

Put 5 cups of water in a pot with the quinoa and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down low and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes until all the water has disappeared and the quinoa is tender. Transfer to a bowl and mix in the dried cranberries, nuts, onions and celery. Put all the ingredients for the dressing into a blender except the olive oil. While the blender is running, slowly pour in the olive oil. Pour the dressing over your quinoa mixture and toss well. Unlike most salad, if you keep it in the fridge it will last for about 3 days.

Honey never goes off – while bacteria usually loves sugar, honey’s unique chemical composition and low pH makes it unfavourable for bacteria to grow in.

KNOW YOUR HONEY Honey has extensive health applications and qualities but it’s important to use a proper raw version. Not many people are aware of what happens to honey before it hits the shelf. Here are some honey facts to put you in the picture.

20

helping you live life well

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

RAW HONEY Raw honey is likely to be crystallised when you buy it. It might have remnants of wax, pollen and propolis - these are all healthy and beneficial.

RAW (UNFILTERED OR STRAINED) HONEY Raw (unfiltered or strained) honey crystallises more quickly than other types as it won’t have been heated. It might have been pressure strained to get the bits of wax and pollen out.

Pasteurised honey has been heated. You won’t see the word pasteurised on your honey label but you might see the word pure. There aren’t many labeling restrictions when it comes to honey and it’s possible your ‘pure’ honey could contain a filler like corn syrup – a feature you don’t want. Most standard grocery stores stock pasteurised honey because there is a perception that uncrystallised honey is better. This isn’t true because heat destroys the beneficial bacterial enzymes. If honey isn’t labeled raw, it probably means it’s been heated and possibly has fillers in it. Some manufacturers dilute the honey and bulk it up with corn syrup and sugar so be discerning when you choose. Heating honey any higher than 50 degrees Celsius can destroy the beneficial enzymes.

FILTERED RAW HONEY Filtered raw honey is heated slightly and passed through a filter. This removes all pollen and propolis, leaving behind a ‘cleaner’ or ‘purer’ honey. In honey terms this doesn’t mean better – the so-called impurities are full of benefits.

HEALING HONEY Manuka honey from New Zealand is a specific type of honey that’s been approved for medical use because of its incredible healing properties and superior potency.

perfumed, pungent or anywhere in between. Just like wine, flavours and colour can differ every year depending on the region, weather and rainfall. Honey is based on the nectar of the flower not the fruit from the tree. The amount of crystallization depends on the proportion of fructose to glucose in the honey (each varietal has its own proportion); the higher the fructose, the less likely to crystallize.

CREAMED Creamed honey is also described as whipped, spun or churned. The thing to know is that it’s delicious. It is still just 100% natural honey and nothing else just a different state. Make it at home by using liquid honey and crystallised honey in a 1:1 ratio or honey that’s already in both states. Put it into a mixer on medium speed and let it run for about 20 minutes. Take a short break and start again. After the third time it will be almost white and extremely creamy. Creamed honey spreads beautifully on bread and blends nicely into desserts or yoghurt.

did you know? Most of the health giving properties of honey come from its enzymatic components. When it’s heated the goodness is largely destroyed. Honey subjected to heat doesn’t crystallize easily, that’s one of the reasons producers do it but it cancels out the goodness. To get the full benefit choose raw honey.

FLOWER & FLAVOUR

Fairtrade is a worldwide movement promoting sustainable farming that uplifts people and doesn’t harm the planet. Look out for the Fairtrade mark on Wellness wines.

Natural Wine You may have heard of the natural wine movement, gaining popularity in France, Europe, and the US. It’s fairly new to South Africa, though, and there’s some confusion about what ‘natural’ really is when it comes to wine. Terms like natural’, ‘organic’, and ‘biodynamic’ are being used more often – here’s a guideline showing what they really mean.

What is natural wine?

Why natural wine?

There are different kinds of natural wines. It’s quite likely you’ve heard of Fairtrade wine and ‘no added sulphur’ wine. But there’s also biodynamic wine, and ‘organic’.

Wine isn’t necessarily fabulous simply because it’s natural. What is certain though is that naturally produced wine is better for you. In ‘no added sulphur’ wine, the only chemicals in the wine are those found naturally in the grape. This means if you are sulphur sensitive, you’re less likely to be negatively affected.

No sulphur added ‘No added sulphur’ wine is exactly what it says – it’s produced without added sulphur. Sulphur is a by-product of the fermentation process and occurs naturally in wine but some producers add extra sulphur as a preservative. Because it’s an antioxidant, it stops wine reacting with oxygen and turning it to vinegar. It also sterilises the wine. Some people are sensitive to sulphur, and for this reason, ‘no added sulphur’ wine is becoming increasingly popular.

Organic Organic wine refers to wine made from grapes grown organically. This means grown without any artificial pesticides or fertilisers. For a farm to be certified as organic, there are many stringent regulations that need to be adhered to. These are generally to do with eliminating toxins and harmful production and growing methods along the entire supply chain.

Biodynamic Biodynamic wine is grown in tune with the daily, monthly, and seasonal rhythms of nature. Biodynamic growers focus on the wellbeing of the environment, and aim not to harm a single living thing in the process.

Sustainability In South Africa over 140,000 hectares of natural area have been conserved by the WWF’s (World Wildlife Fund’s) Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI). The BWI is a partnership between the country’s wine industry and conservation sector, and focuses on protecting South Africa’s natural habitat and also encouraging sustainability. Today, thanks to WWF’s Biodiversity & Wine Initiative, South African wines lead the world in production integrity, environmental sustainability and conservation. According to Fairtradelabel.org.za, South Africa is also the biggest producer of Fairtrade wine in the word. Two-thirds of the 27 million bottles of Fairtrade wine sold in 2013 were produced in Southern Africa and about 5% of grape production in South Africa is Fairtrade certified.

Think about this when you are stressed and defensive you tend to hunch your shoulders creating muscle tension, this can lead to imbalanced nerve activation and create tension headaches.

HEADS THAT ACHE

By Dr Yesheen Singh

From their causes to their cures, Dr Yesheen Singh delves into the finer details of headaches, and offers some tips on how to live headache free.

T

he term headache is a rather vague one. It gives no indication as to the type of pain, where in the head or neck region the pain is located and the pattern of pain - these are all essential in differentiating between the different types of headache. Why is it important to do so? Because the type of headaches can tell us about the underlying cause. Knowing the cause allows us to get to the root of the matter instead of merely shooting the messenger with a pain tablet. When classifying headaches it is important to divide them into primary or secondary types. Primary headaches are generally benign - in other words they are a simple straightforward headache, unrelated to any underlying disease. Secondary headaches, on the other hand, are a more serious affair, and may be an early sign of a variety of serious pathology, ranging from a brain bleed or a brain tumour, to a head injury or meningitis. There are a series of ‘red flag signs’ doctors use to distinguish between a primary and secondary headache.

Secondary often have: • • •

26

headaches

will

Sudden onset - thunderclap headache New onset after age 50 years Other systemic symptoms, such as

• • • • • •

fever, stiff neck or weight loss Other systemic diseases, such as HIV or cancer Headaches increasing in frequency or severity A history of head trauma Inability to move a limb A change in personality, or level of consciousness A headache triggered by coughing, sexual intercourse or during other exertion

If you have one or more of these red flags with your headache, it’s best to visit your local general practitioner for professional evaluation before using any medication to cover up the pain. Dulling the pain with medication takes away one of the more sensitive clues a doctor has to help distinguish between a primary or secondary headache. That said, over 90% of headaches are primary ones. They usually start between the ages of 20 and 40 years and are mostly divided into two big types, migraines and tension-type headaches. The rarer types of primary headaches include cluster headaches and trigeminal neuralgia. Migraines and tension headaches are very different. Migraines tend to present with a pulsating pain on one side of the head, accompanied by sensitivity to light and, helping you live life well

or sound, nausea and vomiting. Migraines can last between 4 hours to 3 days and are often preceded by an aura or blurred vision. Tension headaches, on the other hand, present with a non-pulsing band of pressure on both sides of the head, last between 30 minutes and a couple of hours and have none of the other symptoms migraines do. No one really understands the cause of migraines. The most popular theory is that imbalances in the nerves of the brain lead to flooding with specific neurochemicals like serotonin, which in turn lead to inflammation, swelling and pain. Previously it was thought that migraines were related to problems in the blood vessels leading to the brain but these were disproved with imaging studies. What we do know is that there is

did you know? You can get a headache from taking headache medication too often. This is known as a rebound headache and won’t disappear until the headache medication is stopped entirely.

a strong possibility for people with a family history of migraines to develop them also. Women are more susceptible than men, and the use of birth control or hormone replacement will lead to migraines occurring more frequently and with greater severity. Activation of the nerves in the muscles of the head and neck area are thought to cause tension headaches. Think about this - when you are stressed and defensive you tend to hunch your shoulders, leading to prolonged periods of muscle tension, which in turn lead to imbalanced nerve activation. This creates tension headaches in people who are susceptible to them. To reduce the frequency and severity of migraines you have to target inflammation. To reduce tension headaches you have to target the underlying causes of muscles tension and activation.

General headache tips: 1. Water - keep hydrated. Dehydration leaves toxins of metabolism stuck in your tissue, leading to inflammation and eventually migraines. Your muscles are mostly water when you are dehydrated they are too, making it easier for them to misfire and give rise to a tension headache. 2. Avoid pro-inflammatory foods like sugar, coffee and alcohol. Also consider following an elimination diet for 6 weeks to see if the removal of other inflammatory foods like gluten make a difference. 3. Sleep - sleep deprivation is a major cause of brain inflammation and tension. Don’t set yourself up for a migraine by cutting back on healthy sleep. 4. Acupuncture - when used in conjunction with a balanced healing plan, acupuncture may provide relief from the onslaught of migraines and tension headaches.

Migraine tips: 1. Get your hormones in order - whether you are on birth control, hormone replacement or simply have an irregular menstrual cycle, these are all clues that your hormones are not in a healthy space. Work with a functional medicine practitioner to get you on track and see how this influences your migraines. 2. Speak to your practitioner about replacing headache pharmaceuticals with herbals like feverfew or butterbur. The drugs often cause headaches as you withdraw from them, leading you to use more of them - a negative spiral.

Tension tips: 1. Consider talk therapy - stress is the major cause of tension headaches, be it mental or emotional stress. Speaking about the reasons why you are stressed, and unpacking these in a gentle trusting environment will remove the cause of the stress and therefore the cause of the tension headache. 2. Regular exercise and massage - while you wait for talk therapy to take effect, relieve the tension built up regularly by means of exercise and massage. Both work in different ways to get your muscles to let go of the tension they have built up over time, effectively diffusing the ticking time bomb. A

s tacky as they might sound, cliché’s like ‘Health is Wealth’ and ‘Health is your Greatest Asset’ are monikers getting more attention and reflecting in worldwide trends. Restaurants are becoming more niche with offerings that reflect eating trends like veganism, Banting and raw. Companies are moving their focus from ‘profit to purpose’ and shifting their offering to reflect their new premise. They’re also giving staff more flexi-time and facilitating pursuits like yoga, meditation and nutrition. Well-th is the new Wealth. Here are 7 trends supporting Wellthy values.

RESTAURANT REVAMP

Food preferences have changed so much over the last couple of years –carbohydrate heavy lasagna and pasta dishes are

30

helping you live life well

not nearly as popular. Restaurants are introducing low carb options and finding alternatives to pasta. As Daniel Toledo from Il Leone in Green Point says, “People don’t want to eat pasta anymore, I’ve had to introduce new options on my menu – I now serve my seafood linguini on a bed of cabbage, and it’s going down so well. The three trends people want more of are raw, vegan and low carb. Items like organic, farm-to-table ingredients, grass-fed meats, gluten-free and green juice cocktails are also appearing on restaurant menus.

BOOZE FEE BOOGIE

As Jason Wachob, the initiator of MindBodyGreen.com says, “Gone are the days of drinking too much at networking events. If you’re looking to network, prepare to show up at 6am and enjoy some group meditation, stone cold sober. Charlie Knoles, Dina Kaplan, and Zach Bell

are making ‘The Path’, an invite-only meditation meet up, the place to network among the conscious and successful set in New York.” Closer to home events like Spiritfest in Cape Town have their annual weekend long festival with booze free music and dance with a focus on meditation and yoga.

NATURE BASED EXERCISE

Rather then sweat it out at the gym, people are preferring to take their workout outside. From running to cycling, forest yoga, triathlons, hiking or golf, the great outdoors is where more and more exercise is happening.

SELF LOVE BODY IMAGE

Moving away from trying to fit into photoshopped ideals the new standard is to love the body you have. Being good to your body and treating it like a temple is becoming more important than striving for a perfect shape.

FLEXI-FITNESS

Instead of being loyal to one exercise form the trend is to mix it up with a few. Fitness enthusiasts might be taking a few yoga classes, running on some days and playing tennis or swimming on others. There’s more variety in work-out forms and people are fitting their fitness into daily activities. Things like cycling to work, lunchtime yoga classes or exercise that doubles up as socializing (swapping the coffee date for a mountain hike) – it’s all about fitness as a way of life rather than something you have to do to look good.

SAFE INGREDIENTS

Knowing where your food comes from, and the values applied to production is a key issue. Consumers want to know that no harmful ingredients have been used, that fresh produce isn’t genetically modified or subjected to damaging storage methods. They’re checking labels carefully and supply chain ethics. Many companies are offering transparency and allowing consumers full insight into their companies. They’re registering with certification bodies and advertising sustainability and greenfriendly standards.

TAILOR MADE SUPPLEMENTS

More companies are offering tailor-made supplement solutions. It makes sense when consumers aren’t necessarily qualified to know which supplements they should be taking. Supplement companies are offering advice and personal consultation as well as on-going supplement programmes and supply.

exual issues are complex and can have many causes – sometimes these are physical, sometimes they’re emotional or psychological issues, and sometimes they’re a combination. If sex is painful, your sex drive is lower than you think it should be, or you’re having trouble with erections, your healthcare practitioner should be your first point of call. They may suggest lifestyle changes, therapy or couples’ counselling, or medication. When it comes to lifestyle changes, there are plenty of things you can try on your own. And most of them are fun, too!

Eat sexy

The food you eat affects your health. And your health affects your sex drive and performance. Did you know healthy food could be sexy food, though? Why not bring that into the bedroom?

did you know? The World Health Organisation has a working definition for sexual health. They say sexual health is: “…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.”

Sexy summer foods • Jamaican Sexy Juice. Yes, this is a thing! It’s very popular in Jamaica and if you visit the island you’re guaranteed to come across it. Make our vegan version by blending 1 large fresh pineapple, half a cup of thick coconut milk, half a cup of water, half a teaspoon of nutmeg and a quarter teaspoon of vanilla. We add a little maca for extra sexiness. • Share some strawberries dipped in dark chocolate with your lover. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants good for circulation, which is good for men and women in the bedroom. Dark chocolate contains substances called methylxanthines, believed to enhance sex drive. • Sticky, juicy, sexy watermelon is good for you. It’s full of antioxidant beta carotene, citrulline and lycopene which may help relax blood vessels and naturally enhance your sex drive. Share a slice or two with your partner.

ove is in the air! It’s that time of the year when we celebrate love, we woo those dear to our hearts, we search for our soulmate and fall into the spirit of romance. How exciting. The orchestration of love hormones in harmony with deep emotions as we look dreamily into the eyes of the other seems to be the ultimate fulfilment. But is it really? First you need to find fulfilment within yourself and become fully grounded and activated in the truth of your own divine being. Once you touch the fulfilment within you, the bliss of this precious feeling magnetises magical experiences into your life. But it all begins with you.

power away to another without first finding out that it’s inside us already. When we hold out for these experiences of external love, we put our inner flame on pause. Rekindling this inner lover, this authentic soulmate, is the art of self love. So instead of waiting for a partner to say the words you want to hear, start by saying these words in your own heart. In offering beautiful words to your heart, you become the love you are waiting to receive. These could be: ‘I love you,’ ‘You are amazing,’ ‘’Thank you for loving me,’ ‘I m here for you,’ ‘I will always protect you.’

Be the embodiment of love Your body, mind and soul are products of divine love. Every one of your trillion cells is in harmonious loving relationships with each other. They collaborate, not compete. From here, you step into a field of awareness which lasts forever, timelessly. The fullest embodiment of love is one that overflows with the bliss and ecstasy of your own true nature.

You are your best soulmate How to get in touch with the highest expression of yourself

Step 1: Be honest with what you are feeling about your life and yourself right now. Accept what you are experiencing, compassionately and with kindness. This is where you’re at now. Pause. Breathe deeply. Place your hands over your heart and acknowledge what you are going through.

Step 3: Feel the gratitude of the sacred

Fall in love with yourself again… True tantra is the boundless ecstasy we find within ourselves about the truth of our being, when we realise that there is no other, other than the love that we are. This is when you allow love to see each moment, though the rose-tinted lens of your inner lover. Cherish yourself as a full expression of the magnificent beauty of the universe. It’s a staple one should always keep in the house. You can use it as a remedy, a beauty aid and cleaning aid. Here’s how. Digestive & Bloating Tummy Aid

Recovery Enzymes

If your tummy bloats easily or you have digestive problems mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drink it before you eat. It also helps if you have heartburn. If you’re on the move and eating food you’re not absolutely sure about have a glass as a precaution. Apple Cider Vinegar’s antibacterial action can help stop bacteria that might cause food poisoning. Take it regularly and it will help improve gut flora, and reverse the overgrowth of Candida and other unwanted bacteria or yeasts.

After a strenuous bout of exercise you may have lactic acid in your blood that could do with a bit of help working through your system. An Apple Cider vinegar and water drink gives you potassium, nutrients and enzymes that help with work-out fatigue and will flush your system.

Dose your pet’s drinking water with a spoon or two of Apple Cider Vinegar to reduce allergies, help digestion and prevent parasites. You can also use a 1:1 water mixture on the skin for conditions like thinning fur and ear infections.

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul Jacobson owner of Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition

WHO’S TO BLAME – THE MEAT OR THE GRAIN? The skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body, which is why skin and coat problems are often the first indicators of poor health and care. Yet, almost every pet seems to suffer from some sort of skin condition. Often, the only reasonable explanation given is that our pets are ‘allergic’. Yes, but why? What are they actually allergic to? Why have they limited immunity against these allergens? The answer lies in the body’s pH level. Acidosis is mainly a result of a poor eating plan and diet, which leads to inflammation. Inflamed cells affect the body’s immune system as it becomes depleted from key minerals

42

– magnesium, potassium and calcium. This state of inflammation is the cause of skin ailments, arthritis and bladder disorders, as well as more serious illnesses. An anti-inflammatory diet doesn’t mean eliminating sources of protein, carbohydrates and fats as they are essential for alkaline minerals to establish themselves properly in the tissues. But the diet plan should have 60 – 80 percent of alkalinizing foods to restore and maintain the body’s pH balance. Many professionals and lay people alike, simply claim our pets are allergic, without understanding the origin of the problem. Often they will blame the grain. But there is a marked difference between a whole grain, sprouted grain and refined processed grain. A whole grain is generally only slightly acidic or slightly alkaline where processed grains are almost always acidic. Animal products like meat and dairy are classified as extremely acidic. Without an alkaline forming food (like veggies) to balance the acidity you will always end up with an overall acidic result. That’s what leads to inflammation and then allergies. Generally, alkaline forming foods include: most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs, seasonings, and seeds and nuts. Generally, acid forming foods include: meat, fish, poultry, refined grains, egg whites, oats, potatoes, etc. Meat is classified as

helping you live life well

extremely acidic. Whole grains (the bran, germ and endosperm) contain all the essential parts and naturally-occurring nutrients of the entire grain seed in their original proportions: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oats, Quinoa, Rice (brown and coloured), Wheat, Rye, etc). Studies show that eating whole grains instead of refined grains lowers the risk of many chronic diseases. DID YOU KNOW? Sprouted grains are more alkaline in nature and grains chewed well or slow cooked for a long period of time, become more alkaline. Even unrefined wheat is more alkaline. If combined with vegetables the net alkaline level is raised. In summary, eating whole grains with the proportionate quantity of veggies will support an alkaline environment in the gut. Conversely, eating a diet of mainly meat will create an acidic and unstable environment. The result is inflammation in the cells and resultant allergies and ailments. LIVING LIFE WELL

Namastay is a flower; it’s there for a short period of time, it grows, it flowers, then goes away again.

Hats off to Jeroen Van Wyk for making major life changes to find balance in a frenetic career in the film industry. We speak to Jeroen about a partnership he made with The Shala Yoga studio to bring the annual beachside yoga retreat ‘Namastay’ to South Africa.

46

helping you live life well

A

s we reach the age of 40, we are faced with many questions as to whether we are on the right path or not,” explains Jeroen. “In some sense I pre-empted this, began to evaluate my life and ask myself if I was happy what I was doing – if there were any passions I hadn’t yet fulfilled. To answer these questions my partner, Mirella and I went on a journey to South East Asia where we went deeply into our practice of yoga and living more healthily. Watching the documentary ‘Food Matters’, was like an epiphany. It highlights the importance of the food we eat and how good health is everything. If anyone has to analyse their highest priority in life, it has to be good health. All other things are subsequent to that. Yoga gave us the feeling of being in total wellness. Did I want to do something about living this truth? A short while later my best friend came to South Africa on a surprise visit. We rented a beach house in Paternoster and as we were dancing at the pool side, I looked out at the ocean and suddenly an idea struck. I saw the tent, I saw the people with their yoga mats walking back to beach house, I saw the vibrant juice bar and heard the deep sounds from Ibiza. Not much long after that the name Namastay arrived. That same house is now the core of the Namastay Yoga Retreat.” This is the third year that Jeroen is staging his retreat. Already he’s had visitors from all over the world attend. A natural progression was to combine forces with Mariah Betts, a renowned yoga teacher and owner of The Shala Yoga studio in Cape Town. “Our partnership was somewhat co-incidental but on the other hand it was inevitable”, says Jeroen. “If you carry the same values you are automatically drawn to the same places, you like the same beauty, you have a similar sort of lifestyle and more things seem to be aligned. Mirella and I were the first few students in

Mariah’s first yoga class in South Africa, at the Yogalife Studio in Green Point.”

Q:What does Namastay offer guests that makes it so special?

“Coincidence and timing,” says Mariah. “We have an alike vibration and this energy attracts alike energy. “When Jeroen had this incredible idea about Namastay two years ago it didn’t feel like the timing was right although I did feel part of the vision. The Shala had to evolve quite a lot for us to come together and nurture this bond to its full potential. The connections we’ve made through Namastay have helped The Shala grow and I feel ready to build a strong union with Namastay.”

Mariah: For us (The Shala) it’s more of the holistic experience...there’s attention to detail in beauty and individual attention and intention in everything we teach and everything we present. The Shala is a sanctuary in the urban environment – it’s real but also sacred. The ability level isn’t so important, it’s more about being in the full experience, soaking up all the elements – a full body, mind and spirit adventure. Jeroen: Namastay is non-judgemental, it stands for open-mindedness and finding a simple way to live a balanced life. I like to enjoy my glass of wine in the evening but also love my wheatgrass shot in the morning. I don’t see why one can’t be enjoyed without the other. Namastay is a flower; it’s there for a short period of time, it grows, it flowers and then it goes away again. It’s a very unique event and experience. There is a price attached to it but we really feel you get full value from it. Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the future of Namastay? We want it to grow internationally (we’ve earmarked a beautiful site in both Hawaii and Greece). We want to travel the world and find exotic places to pitch our Bedouin tent and hold the retreat year round.

“My business partner, Tamsin Sheehy and I have a strong vision for our studio, and it’s similar to that of Namastay. It’s not just a yoga space. It’s not about being holier than thou and drinking green juice. It’s about a creative space where people of high vibrations, who love life and everything that life is about, come together to celebrate all the good things that are beautiful and rich and things that make life really satisfying. I like the balance of the retox/ detox principle, it’s very real. Without one you can’t have the other. We are humans here to celebrate, to play in the sand and explore our bodies. That’s what inspires us to work with Namastay. The full experience of yoga and Namastay is that we’re all drawn together on our own experience of being in the beauty, practicing yoga and meeting people from all over the world.”

Compiled by Amy Roux and Natasha Ward.

did you know? Namastay is being held from 7 to 15th March 2015 in the beachside resort of Paternoster. A variety of hand-picked yoga instructors will conduct classes on the beach in a Bedouin tent. It’s a lifestyle retreat that offers juicing and healthy eating options as well as communion with other yogis.

Q: Namstay is a one-of-a-kind retreat, what kind of a person does it attract? A: Jeroen: Free spirited people with a lust for life and an eye for beauty and detail. Those who love to be in a group as much as loving solitude. I guess, you sort of have to like yoga...yoga and balance.

Our proposition is not only to dance, but also to activate, through specific dances, effective communication potential connecting us with ourselves, with our fellow human beings and with nature. - Rolando Toro, founder of Biodanza

Open your heart through dance Dance is an incredible vehicle to open the heart. It allows us to move from our heads and truly take residence in our bodies. Dance is so beneficial to the body that there are movement forms focused primarily on the therapeutic benefits.

B

iodanza is a form of dance that uses music, movement and group interactions to connect people to joy, enhance their creativity and have fun. It means dance with life and facilitates an enriched environment for people to develop their potential and find full expression with themselves and each other.

Relearning heart connections The ability to communicate in a deep, meaningful way is a quality innate in all of us. When we’re exposed to the right environment and stimuli we can learn to connect with other people and love them no matter the differences. Besides being a process of personal development, Biodanza involves opening our hearts to others including our families, communities and work associates. It’s a process of establishing an ability to communicate with sincerity, empathy and love. Through natural movement, we learn to first connect with ourselves and discover the beauty of life inside us. We can then express this with others through our dances.

48

Biodanza is movement full of meaning, allowing you to express what’s inside your heart, and sharing it with others. People can affect our perception of life and our vision for the future. Creating meaningful connections means that together we can build a dream, a love story, a friendship, an adventure. We can learn to co-create the dreams of our companions while we go further in ours. Biodanza opens up this possibility. Put your dreams in movement. When movement is full of meaning, profound shifts can happen. This is a wonderful opportunity to take the initiative and become part of a community. Come and dance! For more information about the Personal Development Course go to the website www.cape.biodanza.org or mail us at cape@biodanza.org or call Shumi on 072 192 2261 The Cape Town School is directed by Marcelo Toro – a third-generation Biodanza facilitator following in the steps of his father and his grandfather Rolando Toro, the creator of Biodanza. pike your day with energy. Decide to be naturally energetic and exert yourself whenever you see an opportunity. It’s easy to double the amount of activity you do in the normal course of your day. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

leg or breath into a good posture.

Instead of sitting on a chair, sit on an exercise ball. Because it moves, you will be continuously flexing your legs and using your core to stay balanced. This burns a lot more energy than using a chair. Do a wall squat while you brush your teeth, sit-ups during your movie, keep a dumbell near your land line and get some arm curls in while you’re chatting. If you’re queuing do some flexor resistance, balance on one

Before you shower in the morning dance to your favourite song, this will put you in a great mood and get your circulation flowing. Make a rule of always taking the stairs, no matter what. Forget about finding a parking right outside. Park far away on purpose and power walk to your destination. Leave the car at home and bike or walk to work, or walk part of the way and catch a taxi or bus.

Combine thinking time or meetings with walking, if you need to take notes you can voice record into your phone. Change your sitting desk to a stand up desk, get a bar chair if you need to lean on something.

MOTIVATE YOUR WORKOUT

Get hold of some lolly pop sticks and write a series of exercises on each stick. Things like 20 sit-ups, 15 squats, 10 star jumps, 100 skips, 20 press-ups etc. Keep two jars handy and put all your sticks in one of the jars. Randomly pull out a stick and once you’ve completed the exercise, move it to the second jar. Keep going until all your sticks are in the second jar.

BUILD A HOME GYM

You don’t need expensive equipment, interesting work out options could include a hula hoop, dumbells, a skipping rope, yoga mat, balance ball and resistance band. Design a complete body workout with your props that include cardio, stretch and resistance. There are plenty of ideas online. A dedicated space will inspire you towards a daily discipline. Make yourself use every prop and you’re sure to get a well rounded workout.

PLAY BALL

Throwing a ball against a wall with different bounce variations and pitches will help improve co-ordination. Make it bounce out of your range so you have to move to catch it. Practicing dribbling and running with a ball can be great fun and work up a sweat. Get yourself onto a tennis court with a ball machine. Hit back twenty balls at a time, make it a task to run and collect them and start over again.

Collaborative divorce allowed active and involved decision-making, which resulted in creative solutions customized to our family’s needs.

FAMILY TIES

Co-parenting and all the complexities and negotiations needed to put agreements in place has far better outcomes when the divorce is negotiated collaboratively. ollaborative Law is new to South Africa, although It’s been around for over 10 years in the US, Canada and Europe. It’s objective is to keep divorce cases out of court and to use Collaborative Law attorneys and Child and Family Specialists to develop sustainable solutions. It’s an innovative approach that looks at both finances and child related issues, an approach South Africa has not seen until now.

get litigation lawyers and start the process again. It’s a risk, but it creates commitment and is quicker. It goes according to the clients pace and the attorneys and Family specialists who work together to maximise everyone’s wellbeing and reach an optimal sustainable result.

How does the process work? • Both parties have to choose a Collaborative Law attorney and sign a Collaborative Law written agreement, binding them to the terms of the process – ultimately to NOT go to court. • Attorneys work together to get matters resolved instead of being in the traditional ‘polarised’ positions of attorneys and clients. • Clients meet regularly with attorneys and family and child professionals to build sustainable solutions around contact, finances and housing arrangements. • The right professionals are there to help the parents and children emotionally during the process, offering support and advice during and after the divorce.

The advantages of the Collaborative Law process During the Collaborative Law process round table decisions are made saving time and money. Everything said is confidential and none of the information can be used in court. It’s a safe and transparent environment to create sustainable solutions done with the support of professionals. The process provides help with key practical matters like introducing new partners, telling the children about the divorce, explaining why parents are divorcing and similar issues. It’s meant to maximize the emotional wellbeing of the whole family giving priority to the coparenting relationship and helping with the transition from a married couple with children to co-parents.

• Clients and children can also meet separately with the family and child specialist for emotional support during this stressful time. To begin, clients sign a written agreement that encourages commitment to the process. Case Study Cape Town has just completed its first case in this innovative approach. Two well-established attorneys Manndi Schuld and Debra Segrott were part of the process.

W

Their first stop was to formulate a Parenting Plan. This is a detailed document with agreements on areas like contact, housing, schooling and holidays. A few months into the process, when agreements had reached an impasse, the attorneys suggested I help with housing and child contact arrangements. At that stage, this wasn’t possible as one of the clients was not ready yet. The attorneys carried on working with the spouses and reached pretty much all the agreements, apart from one or two key decisions, that again reached an impasse.

This time they were both ready for my input and we scheduled a meeting that allowed everyone to work together creating new ideas and new agreements. The trickier Issues and details which had been in dispute for a few months, were settled. The attorneys kept everything lawful, guiding us, and coming up with their own creative solutions. I was able to offer ideas around the children’s emotional needs during this traumatic time, impacting decisions around visits and contact. By facilitating this meeting as a neutral party the experience was kept safe and productive.

This results in: •

The children feeling loved and knowing the divorce is not their fault It reduces the emotional impact of the process and the stress of the divorce The children don’t have to feel that either parent has to be ‘blamed’ and reduces any dilemmas around loyalty or protection towards either parent

Parents presenting themselves as positive role models to the children, and demonstrates maintaining positive relationships in life, even through adversities

Facilitating the dynamic and forever changing needs of families and children. A framework for good and effective communication that allows decisions to be made together and to minimise disagreements

Positive input to children about the other parent and potential new partners, helping the emotional impact on children

Lastly, and most importantly, the parents could communicate, make decisions, hear each other, listen and work together. It wasn’t easy, but it was achievable.

Tips to a positive co-parenting What is the key to relationship a ‘good divorce’ how to best communicate – when children are • Agree text, email or phone calls – which involved? works best? It’s simple. Spouses have to learn how to effectively and positively move from being a married couple with children to their new position as Co-Parents.

FINDING THE EASE IN EFFORT When you rest your attention on your breath, instead of your thinking, space opens up in the body and the mind calms.” Tara Stiles, Yoga and Wellness expert Things that seem difficult can be changed. Not actually by changing them but by changing the way we perceive and assimilate them, or more simply, by the way we breathe. We borrow from yoga to ‘find the ease in the effort’. Our most usual strategy when applying ourselves to something that needs effort is to ‘run through brick walls.’ That means applying great effort, clenching our fists and pounding through. Of course we can accomplish things this way, but it’s not the most efficient way and leaks out lots of energy.

As Tara Stiles says, “Finding the ease doesn’t mean being lazy; it means working efficiently, being aware of how you’re working, having patience, and deciding how you are going to be. When you can be easy in your body, easy in your mind, and have patience, you’ll be able to accomplish much more than running through brick walls.” Your breath is your greatest ally. In it you will find composure and comfort. When you follow your breath you can do anything with a higher level of ease. Breathing connects you back to yourself.

BEAUTY

Habits & Practices

It’s essential to introduce relaxing practices into your life. Breathing, meditation, yoga and movement are some of the ways you can do that.

56

G

enerate more awareness in your life and incorporate positive practices and ideologies. Ditch habits that don’t nourish your body and incorporate more that do. Sometimes we have to be highly intentional to shift life into one with more rewarding results.

over soup, on chicken or whatever meal you may be eating. Your taste buds will soon be calling for more green when your body starts to log the nutritional value. Do the same with berries, add them to your morning muesli or your smoothie. Rather than totally changing the way you eat, simply start adding more goodness.

Eat clean

Do a morning cleanse

We’ve been told to eat fruit and veggies so many times that by now, it just feels like background noise. But seriously, one of the biggest impacts you can have on your skin is to change the way you eat. If you can’t face bowls of spinach or broccoli, do it an easier way. Choose something with maximum green impact, parsley is fantastic, chop it up finely and add it to whatever you normally eat. You can add chopped parsley to your standard cheese sandwich, sprinkle it

Before you drink anything else in the morning rehydrate your system with a cleansing glass of lemon water or if you’re more daring add some cayenne pepper. Maintaining your body’s fluid balance helps you absorb more nutrients from food, it aids digestion and flushes away toxins. It’s essential for good skin and what’s more gives you energy as well. Your cleansing morning drink will help your internal organs work optimally and give your skin a healthy glow.

helping you live life well

Keep radiation away That means putting down your cell phone, or at least put it on speaker. Mobile phones use electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range. Although most studies on the negative effects of cell phone usage are not conclusive, anyone using one for long periods of time will testify to unpleasant sensations. These range from fatigue to headaches, neck pain, blurry vision and more. The point is, we forget to use the speaker option when we can, or limit our usage when we should. According to the Daily Mail, staring at a mobile phone screen at bedtime causes people to take longer to reach deep sleep and spend less time in deep sleep.

Check your drug intake Besides recreational drugs, headache tablets, sleeping pills and anti-

inflammatories are also bad for your system. Where possible try and use more natural means to contain stress or deal with aches and pains. An article titled ‘Prescription for Trouble’ published in ‘Consumer Reports’ in 2006 says tens of millions of people in the United States are unknowingly exposed to rare, yet harmful side effects from prescription drugs. These risks include heart attack, stroke, cancer and suicide that were unknown, undetected and underestimated during drug trials prior to FDA approval. Many of these drugs are still on the market.

Drink green chlorophyll Chlorophyll is the dark green pigment found in plants and has a similar molecular structure to hemoglobin. It has ‘tried and tested’ benefits including boosting red blood cells, improving oxygen, increasing energy, helping body odour, and offers protection from cancer. It has most of the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs. Supplements like spirulina, wheat grass and barley grass contain chlorophyll.

Get free fitness online If getting to a gym class is stressful and time consuming, do an online class at home. There are many amazing free classes on Youtube. You can choose from yoga, Pilates, strength training and the best thing is, you can press play at any time of the day or night.

Organise your beauty products A clean and organized space where you can easily access the products you need, will inspire you to do the grooming rituals you aspire to. If cotton pads and make-up remover are visible and handy you’re more likely to remove make-up after a night out. Keep a face scrub in your shower, throw out all your old and expired make-up, organise dresser space and revamp your grooming area. Keep beautiful bottles to store earbuds, cotton pads and soaps. Get an elegant glass to put your make-up pencils in, find a beautiful box for your lipsticks and if necessary, put up an extra shelf in your bathroom.

Read product labels Check the product labels on everything you buy. You may be surprised that the product you thought was completely natural has a nasty ingredient you don’t want your body exposed to. Get to know what the ingredients mean and see that you’re happy with what you are getting. It’s important to take ownership of what you put in, and on your body.

Inhabit your body Carry yourself with purpose and you will radiate attractive energy. Your posture says so much about your state of mind. When your body slumps it sends defeatist messages to your brain. Make a conscious decision to check your posture throughout the day and bring more energy and light into your body whenever you remember. If you make this a habit, soon it will become your natural state of being.

Stress less Jennifer Kunst wrote a book called The Lost Art of Doing Nothing – just the title of the book is thought provoking. Modern life doesn’t leave any time to do nothing. Yet we can make space and time to relax – it just requires discipline and effort. Too much stress produces an abundance of cortisol, adrenaline and chemicals that can make you feel depressed and worn out. It’s essential to introduce relaxing practices into your life. Breathing, meditation, yoga and movement are some of the ways you can do that. It’s a fact that people who stress less, look younger.

did you know? Smelling an orange can reduce stress and boost your mood. Eat an orange in the low part of your day. The act of peeling it will reveal its flavour and disperse its scent. You can also dab orange oil on your body or put some drops in your car.

Things you didn’t know about…

SEX

Magic Maca

More sex means more sex

Lots of good sex strengthens the pelvic floor muscles. This makes sex more pleasurable for women. The more good sex you have, the more you want.

Have sex for your immune system

People who have sex are better able to defend themselves against germs, viruses, and other intruders that can lead to illness. Researchers at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that college students who had sex once or twice a week, had higher levels of an antibody beneficial for the immune system, than students who had sex les often.

Maca has long been believed to balance the hormones and improve fertility. Derived from the maca root, maca powder is a popular superfood – especially for couples wanting to conceive. If that’s you, add some to your morning smoothie or fresh juice. You can even mix it into your coffee.

Add Aminos

The body uses the amino acid L-Arginine (known as arginine) to improve blood flow to the penis. Arginine is available in 500mg capsules – but remember to check with your healthcare practitioner before taking a new supplement.

Sexercise

Sex is a great form of exercise. It’s not going to replace your treadmill, but it certainly counts. Having sex uses five calories per minute – that’s four more than watching TV. It also bumps up your heart rate. The more you do it, the more it benefits you, too.
