AND SUDDENLY YOU JUST KNOW IT’S TIME TO START SOMETHING NEW, LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND AND TRUST THE MAGIC OF BEGINNINGS

THE CORE OF THE MATTER You may enjoy the sweet taste of apricot flesh, but did you know that the seed is actually regarded by many as the healthiest part of the fruit? Apricot kernels are rich in B17 or Amygdalin, an important vitamin that has gradually been excluded from the processed Western diet over the years. They are also a great source of protein, minerals and healthy fats. This raw snack could just be your new favourite on-the-go pick-me-up. Remember though, no more than 5 a day. ABSORB YOUR MINERALS It’s not surprising that Future Health’s Cal&Mag Assist is the brand’s best-selling product. Instead of just offering highquality calcium and magnesium, it goes a step further to add the prebiotic FOS into the mix to improve the absorption of the minerals. Derived from the chicory root, FOS also supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Although Cal&Mag Assist is obviously great for those who need to build bone mass or improve muscle function, it can also help improve irregular sleep patterns and fatigue. TERRIFIC TURMERIC Turmeric has risen to fame as a star ingredient in natural medicine. You can use it as an anti-inflammatory, an antioxidant or an antibiotic. It’s an immune booster and a painkiller, and it even helps to improve concentration and alleviate the symptoms of depression. Known for their delicious range of turmeric health drinks, Taka now offers 100% additive-free organic turmeric capsules to help you get your daily dose of the wonder spice. NATURALLY FULLER & FIRMER This nurturing natural mascara uses beeswax, rose and silk powder to plump and protect lashes; jojoba to increase lash volume; neem to fortify lashes; and black tea extract to soothe the eye area. Although the effect is dramatic, the gentle composition makes it safe to use on even the most sensitive of eyes. We also love the way the aubergine shade makes our eyes pop! SQUEAKY CLEAN CITRUS We’re so impressed by how well this eco-friendly, biodegradable laundry detergent performs. IT WASN’T A ‘DIET’, IN ALL HONESTY I CAN’T STAND DIETS, THEY DRAG ON TOO LONG AND I LOVE FOOD TOO MUCH. IT WAS MORE LIKE A GUIDELINE OF GOOD FOOD CHOICES TO ENHANCE HEALTH.

HAVING BEEN SHOCKED AT FINDING OUT HER CHOLESTEROL LEVEL WAS WAY TOO HIGH, DUNE SPENCE-ROSS, A HIGHLY ACTIVE SURF LOVER SET OUT TO IMPROVE HER HEALTH BY CHANGING HER EATING PATTERNS. SHE TELLS US HOW. When I found out I needed to get my cholesterol in check, I was determined to do something about it immediately and went about designing an eating guide that would do the trick. Three months later I had dropped my cholesterol from 7.1 to 4.2 without any medication and without dieting. The first thing I did was cut out bad carbs (bread, biscuits, chips, cookies) and add good carbs. This included a daily bowl of organic oat mix (recipe below) which really boosted my energy levels and stopped me from having cravings. I slowly started eating more raw foods, if I was eating fruit, nuts and vegetables I would make sure they were raw. This might seem restricting and for sure, you can only eat so much salad before you can’t stand it anymore, but not many people realise how many options and delicious alternatives you can get from raw eating. Smoothie bowls, pestos, sauces, dips and amazing taste combinations can be created with a little know-how. Not

having to cook anything saves so much time, which is such a bonus. For the first 2 and a half months I was still eating meat, between 3 and 5 servings a week and I was also having the occasional treat. I’m a firm believer of balance rather than restriction. Then in the last two weeks I went on a full raw food detox to cleanse and rejuvenate my body. The detox was really simple - if it is not raw don’t eat it. I highly recommend this for everyone regardless of your cholesterol levels. It’s a great way to flush unwanted toxins from the body and has plenty of health benefits. For me, adding more raw to my diet has been an incredible journey, filled with flavour and multiple health benefits. DID YOU KNOW? Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of the body. Your body needs it to make hormones, vitamin D, and various other substances. It travels through the body in parcels known as lipoproteins which are fat (lipid) on the inside and proteins on the outside. There are two kinds of lipoproteins/low-density (LDL) and high-density (HDL). Heart health is compromised when there is too much LDL.

It’s no secret that one of the greatest challenges facing the planet is our increasing dependence on our scarcest and most valuable natural resource – water.

Triple Orange means...

Booming population growth and escalating industrialisation has dramatically affected both the quantity and quality of increasingly limited natural resources, with the most visible negative impact felt across oceans, lakes, rivers and subterranean water sources.

Chemical free cleaning

Water pollution has many sources – domestic and industrial garbage, dirt and gravel, masonry and concrete, scrap metals, trash, oil, solvents, chemicals, weed grass, wood and scrap lumber account for over six billion kilograms of trash dumped into natural water sources every year. Much of this polluted water has become unsuitable for human consumption – whether for drinking, recreation, agriculture or industry – and has damaged aquatic life to such an extent that aquatic animals become extinct five times faster than land animals.

Incredible degreasing properties

Studies have shown that increased levels of toxicity in water have contributed to a significant rise in people suffering from allergies, headaches, depression, Alzheimer’s, cancer, chronic fatigue and other ailments. More critically, 15 million children under the age of five die every year as a result of consuming polluted water.

No toxic vapours Multi-purpose application 100% biodegradable ingredients A pH-balanced solution

In the industrial context, water is often an essential element in daily operation. Whether it’s in the manufacturing processes or in cleaning and sanitation, the use of water results in by-products that will find their way into the waterways. The chemicals used in these processes, therefore, need to impact the environment as little as possible, but because of the current reliance on synthetic chemicals, reducing the impact of this effluent is difficult to control. But there is an alternative, and it is industry’s prerogative to seize the opportunity to make a permanent change away from the harmful chemicals used in cleaning and sanitization within their facilities. After extensive research into the use of natural orange oils to manufacture industrial detergents, Triple Orange has developed two products specifically for all types of industrial cleaning and sanitization, from machinery cleaning and laundry to sanitization of bathroom and kitchen facilities. And because Triple Orange is multi-purpose, it also reduces both the amount of product required and the variety of different products needed for different applications. Triple Orange’s Wonder Gel is a powerful degreaser and multi-purpose cleaner. Its active ingredient D’limonene gives a citrus-based punch to clean even the toughest grease and dirt, including on heat-producing equipment, and because it is pH-neutral, it is non-corrosive and leaves no residue. Bio-Det Laundry Detergent provide a highly effective natural alternative to multiple and harmful synthetic chemical laundry detergents. Bio-Det also acts as a softener, meaning work apparel lasts longer, while removing the toughest stains and grease. GREENS GET DRESSED UP LIKE NEVER BEFORE WITH SUPER DELICIOUS DRESSINGS AND ENTICING COMBINATIONS OF NEW INGREDIENTS WITH FABULOUS TASTE AND CRUNCH APPEAL. Once you’ve got the basics down, raw food eating is incredibly easy, non fussy and has endless variations of the most creative delicious tasting combo’s you could ever imagine. Most people imagine raw food to be bland and hard to get down but it’s just the opposite. Here’s how you can make crackers, a basic salad and an unforgettable raw take on lasagne. FIND YOUR CRUNCH For me, crunch is essential. Raw foodists favour a simple cracker made from ground flax seed which can be broken up and added to salads or topped with a hummus, pesto or salad and eaten as a snack.

BASIC FLAX CRACKER Makes a standard baking tray of crackers

INGREDIENTS 1 cup of ground golden flax seeds 1 cup of spring water 1. 2.

Grind your flax seed in a Nutri bullet or similar grinder. Add the water, mix together and set apart.

From here you need to decide what type of flavour you want. You can use anything from ground herbs, sun dried tomato, basil, kale massaged with olive oil and chopped finely, nutritional yeast, alfalfa sprouts blended or chopped finely, soaked almonds or cashews, pesto, chilli or other spices. Add any of these options to your flaxseed mixture keeping the texture fairly dry and easy to spread. Once everything is well mixed spread it on a baking tray covered with wax paper. Dehydrate or put into the oven on its lowest temperature possible for about 4 hours. Cut or break into squares.

RAW LASAGNE Even non raw, meat eaters absolutely love this dish. Take it to a party and it’ll disappear before any of the other options. It might seem like a bit of a mission making all the components that go into the lasagne but each of them on their own can be kept in the fridge and used seperately or with other meals. All you need is a food processor and even though a mandoline is nice to have it’s easy to do without one. Notes: You can make it in a big lasagne dish or make up individual portions per plate. Just be aware that it’s fairly rich and has high density nutrition so you don’t need a lot. With raw food you need to eat less than you would with normal food. Serves 8 big portions Preparation: make sure you prepare way in advance to accommodate the time needed for soaking ingredients.

INGREDIENTS NUT CHEESE 2 cups macadamias, soaked in water for 4 hours 1 cup pine nuts 2 Tbsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast 1 red pepper 2 Tbsp fresh parsley 1 Tbsp fresh thyme

18

helping you live life well

1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt 1/2 cup water or more as needed Drain the macadamias of their soak water then add all your ingedients to a processor. If you need to add water then do, but use it sparingly so you get a nice aerated consistency. WALNUT CRUNCH 1/2 cup walnuts, soaked for about an hour 1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, soaked about an hour 1 Tbsp miso or Braggs Aminos 2 tsps dried oregano 2 tsps dried sage 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil Roughly process all the ingredients together so your mixture still has some crunch. TOMATO BASE 1 1/2 cups sun-dried tomatoes, soaked 2 hours or more 2 soft dates 1 garlic cloves 2 cups tomato, seeded and chopped 1 Tbsp dried oregano 2 Tbsps olive oil 3 Tbsp lemon juice Whizz these ingredients together in a blender GREEN PESTO 2 cups tightly packed basil leaves 3/4 cup pine nuts or walnuts (soaked for about 3 hours) 3 Tbsp olive oil

1/2 tsp salt ½ clove garlic 1 Tbsp lemon juice Lightly process all the ingredients together so its not totally homogenous but has a bit of depth KALE LAYER 6 cups torn kale 2 Tbsp olive oil 5 tablespoons dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon salt Use the olive oil to massage the kale really well then sprinkle with the oregano and salt. TIME TO ASSEMBLE • 5 medium zucchini • pinch of salt • 1 tsp olive oil 1. 2.

3.

4. 5.

Cut the zucchini into thin strips. Brush them with olive oil and sprinkle with salt Place a layer of these in the bottom of your dish overlapping them so there are no gaps between. Next smear a layer of walnut mixture, then a thin layer of nut cheese and then the tomato base. Layer the kale along the top. Dollop teaspoons of the pesto on top. Then repeat two more times, first the zucchini, then the sauces, kale and pesto. End up with a last layer of zucchini strips. Pack your lasagne together and push it tightly so it becomes a neat parcel. You can serve it straight away or leave it in the fridge to set a little.

WATER IS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE, IT IS ALSO A CARRIER OF MEMORY, VIBRATIONS AND INTENTIONS. WE LOOK AT THE WONDERFUL WAYS YOU CAN INFLUENCE AND ADD MORE TO THIS MAGNIFICENT FOUNDATION OF LIFE.Â

DID YOU KNOW? Blue blue lights have been used to prevent suicide. In Japan, authorities concerned with a spiralling suicide rate most popularly carried out in train stations, have installed special LED blue lighting as a preventative measure. In Tokyo, the railways with blue lighting reported a stunning and marked decrease in railway suicides. Science says that blue, the colour of the 5th Chakra is vital for mental and physical health, whether as a shining light or infused into water.

Dr. Masaru Emoto is famous for his experiments with frozen water crystals exposed to all number of human interaction and environmental stimulation. Water subjected to hate, rage or negative emotions made distorted and disfigured crystals. But the water given love and positive thoughts (even music), created exquisitely formed crystals. He recently did another experiment in which he placed rice into three tubs of water. The first tub he thanked every day, the second he told was stupid and the third he ignored. After a month, the thanked rice began to ferment, the stupid rice began to rot and the ignored rice went mouldy. Without getting too technical on the quantum physics of his research, suffice to say, it’s been proven that water responds. Dr. Emoto’s teachings encourage people to be kinder to themselves, because we are made up of at least 60% water, it stands to reason that our bodies will respond as Dr. Emoto’s water does. But how do you infuse your water with more?

GOOD VIBES Flower essences work on the principle of infusing water with the vibrational energy of certain flowers. This can be true of just about anything and crystals are commonly used to give water different healing powers. For example, rose quartz (often called the love stone) is great for easing anxiety and raising self-esteem. TIP: Ensure you use non-toxic, water compatible crystals like quartz, rosequartz, citrine, rainbow obsidian, lapis lazuli or amethyst. GOING POTTY Ceramic has been used for centuries for purifying water. Basically, as with any filter, the ceramic doesn’t allow anything larger than its pore size to pass through. This means that bacteria, sediment, lead and various other molecules get filtered out. DID YOU KNOW? In 1837, Queen Victoria was the first person to have a personalised ceramic filtration device.

ACTIVATED Did your mom ever put a piece of coal in the fridge to remove odours? Well, she was scientifically brilliant. Another way of filtering, or purifying your water is through a carbon filtering system. Activated carbon actually absorbs contaminants, leaving the remaining water purer and closer to nature. Activated carbon is especially good at removing sediment, chlorine, volatile organic compounds, odours and taste from water. GET THE BALANCE RIGHT Alkalising water is a huge trend – it’s been touted as a great source for boosting your metabolism, reducing bloodstream acidity and to assist your body in absorbing more nutrients. Check your water’s pH (you can get pH kits just about anywhere these days) – the optimum level for pure drinking water is 8 or 9 (water is usually around 7). There are a few ways to alkalinise your water: you can add baking powder; slice up a lemon and leave in the water for around 8 hours (don’t squeeze the lemons); or add a teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt.

HEALTH BOOSTING TURMERIC & COCONUT DRINKS

SPICE IT UP If you’ve spoken to your water, filled it with intentionality and colour but still aren’t too keen on drinking all that much, adding a few herbs, spices or fruit should jazz it up a bit for you. Water is so versatile in that it will subtly absorb the flavours you put in – so why not try a cinnamon stick (great for lowering blood sugar), or mint. Another delicious way of upping your water game is to freeze leftover herbs or fruit in ice-trays. A mix of mint, lemon and cucumber is wonderfully tasty.

However you enjoy your water, do what you can to ensure you enjoy more of it, with more in it. Use water to help boost your mood, balance your pH or simply quench your thirst.

helping you live life well

Using the Vanilla Supershakes means super powering this recipe with an additional 7 superfoods making a real super cookie. 1. In a high power blender add the cashew nuts and blend them for about 5 – 10 seconds until they are crumbly. Careful not to turn them into nut butter. 2. Put the cashew crumbs into a processor along with the Vanilla Supershake and honey. Process all the ingredients slowly. Add the water and lastly the cacao nibs until you have a dough-like mixture. 3. Roll your mixture flat and then press into cookie shapes. 4. TIP: If your mixture is too sticky, wet your hands while working with it. 5. Dehydrate at 47 degrees Celsius for 8 hours.

CHOCOLATE ICING As an optional extra, make up a batch of icing and dollop some on the top of each cookie. You could get really fancy and put your icing in a piping bag and deliver your dollop with extra aplomb. 1. Strain the water from the cashews. 2. Put all your ingredients into a high speed blender and blend slowly. 3. Use a tamper to grind the ingredients against the blade so it mixes into a smooth icing.

This recipe comes from a combined project between Soaring Free Superfoods and Earthshine and is featured in their new e-book of chocolate recipes

COFFEE

clout

by Kirsten Alexander

COFFEE-LOVERS WERE EXCITED WHEN SCIENCE ANNOUNCED THAT THE BREW IS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD FOR YOU; BUT IT’S NOT JUST AS SIMPLE AS BLACK OR WHITE ANYMORE. WE EXPLORE NEW AND UNUSUAL WAYS TO PARTAKE LIKE ADDING SUPERFOODS AND ALKALINE AGENTS.

WITH EVERYTHING ARTISANAL AND ORGANIC THESE DAYS, FROM BEER TO BABY-GROWS, IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT COFFEE HAS BEEN GIVEN A MAKEOVER.

DID YOU KNOW? Coffee flour might be the next big thing. Still in the experimental stages, it seems that in a nowaste world, coffee beans can be turned into flour. The flour apparently has a distinctly floral flavour and could bring about a whole new way of baking.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 60 SIPS All over the world, coffee is enjoyed as a traditional drink. Here’s how some of our global neighbours do it:

Senegal: if you’re keen on a kick with your coffee, café Touba will do the trick; it’s flavoured with djar, a common peppery seed.

Mexico: Served in a little clay pot to impart an earthy flavour, café de olla is spiced with cinnamon and unrefined sugar called piloncillo.

Finland: here’s a strange tradition, in Kainu (central-east Finland), coffee is served with small chunks of a cheese called juustoleipa. Once you’ve drunk the coffee, you eat the melted cheese

Ethiopia: the birth place of coffee of course is serious about their coffee rituals. It will most likely be served to you in a spouted pot called a jebena, after the woman of the house has spent hours roasting and brewing her own blend. Thailand: Oilang, which is Thai iced coffee is blended with various different flavourings, from cardamom to sesame. It’s served with a side order of condensed milk

26

helping you live life well

Ukraine: this may not be uniquely Ukrainian, but it’s a favourite there – espresso served with a slice of lemon. The rim of the cup is rubbed with the lemon, which is then placed into the coffee. Lemon is believed to enhance the flavour of coffee.

recipe CRAFTY COFFEE With everything artisanal and organic these days, from beer to baby-grows, it’s no surprise that coffee has been given a makeover. While science says that coffee beans are a superfood in their own right, craft coffee makers are now also adding new and exciting health options to coffee some of them balance the effects of caffeine and others add a bit more alkaline to make it healthier. Mushrooms: while that may not sound too tasty, it’s nothing that your imagination can conjur but is proving to be fabulously tasty and filled with health-giving properties such as metabolism support, immune system strengthening and productivity enhancement. Moonbean coffee offers a wonderful mix that includes mushrooms – it’s certified organic direct fair trade coffee that contains wildcrafted chaga mushrooms, and lots of certified organic ingredients like raw cacao powder, cinnamon, maca root, turmeric and lucuma. Rice bran solubles: imagine being able to reduce your cholesterol with a cup of java? Well, rice bran solubles added to your coffee actually offers a beautifully creamy texture to the drink, and has superfood accolades. Cardamom: this is the secret ingredient in great Turkish coffee, but it’s also a good health kicker. Use ground spice (if you do have cardamom oil, just use the tiniest bit on the tip of a toothpick for your entire pot of coffee – it’s really strong) Cayenne pepper: a great kicker for your morning coffee that also reduces acidity. Butter: it’s a tried and tested addition to your coffee and either you love it or hate it. The trick, however, is to use a high speed blender to mix it all up. And while you’re at it, add a bit of coconut oil to the mix.

DIY SUPERCOFFEE If you’re keen to seriously up your java game, try this recipe to kickstart your day: Brew a cup of your favourite coffee and add the following to the mix: 1 cup almond milk 1 tsp raw cacao powder 1 tsp maca powder 1 tsp coconut oil 1 tsp raw honey ½ tsp turmeric powder pinch cayenne pepper pinch cinnamon Coffee beans are superfoods; brewed coffee is filled with antioxidants and has even been said to make you smarter. Whether you are a bit of an addict who can’t wake up without it or an occasional partaker, there are myriad ways you can enjoy and enhance coffee’s health benefits.

Turmeric: a lovely spicy addition that’s a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Ginger: not your usual coffee additive, but it’s an interesting taste and of course, ginger is fantastic for easing stomach pain. Mint: such a versatile herb, mint also tastes fantastic in coffee. Adding a few fresh leaves will keep your sweet cravings at bay. TIP: Brew your coffee with crushed eggs shells; the calcium reduces the acidity of coffee (works with a French press or drip method)

Tea: even though it might sound like you’re trying to get it all in one, you can get even more flavour out of your preferred brew by dipping in a tea bag. Use green tea for the added health benefits. Vanilla: while there are numerous vanilla coffee blends on the market, adding a drop or two of real vanilla essence helps to boost mood and mental performance.

EMOTIONAL EATING

EXPLAINED by Hanro Roos

EVERYONE IS AWARE OF EATING TO FILL A DIFFICULT FEELING, WHETHER HEARTBREAK, BOREDOM OR UNEASE. NUTRITIONIST AND WEIGHT LOSS COACH HANRO ROOS EXPLAINS THE REASONS WHY AND HOW TO BREAK AN EMOTIONAL EATING CYCLE.

DID YOU KNOW? Your brain is 75% water and dehydration can actually shrink your brain. Staying hydrated improves your mental performance and mood. Even mild dehydration causes sleepiness, fatigue, confusion and low alertness. Drinking water can alleviate these symptoms within 5 - 15 minutes.

28

helping you live life well

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could be emotional exercisers instead of emotional eaters? Do you eat when stressed, already full, sad, mad, bored, not hungry or anxious? If you feel powerless around food you might be labeled an emotional eater. Meaning that you eat to fill an emotional void, or there’s an underlying trauma you are trying to repress with food. That might be true, but let’s entertain a different perspective... As humans, our DNA seeks out three main goals: pursuit of pleasure, avoidance of pain and conservation of energy. In nature, the more energy we conserve, the better our chances of survival. For example, a rural tribe foraging for food would look for the foodstuff with the best energy value. Eating iceberg lettuce would not make sense. The energy used to harvest would exceed the energy gained from eating the food. That’s why your DNA wants the most energy dense foods. That’s why fruit roll-ups taste better than whole fruit. It’s more calorie dense because it’s processed that way and has added sugar. This concept may be perfect for our natural environment where food is harder to come by but not our current environment where unhealthy and processed food has never been so cheap, tasty, readily available and accessible as it is today.

Magnesium Boost

Vital for every cell in your body

EATING HIGH QUALITY NUTRITION MEANS YOUR BODY WILL FEEL NOURISHED AND YOUR BRAIN WON’T SEND OUT HUNGER SIGNALS.

We have access to junk food 24/7 without having to pick, dig, or catch it. Sugar, salt and fat make up the junk-food holy trinity. Where fat consists of 9 calories per gram, protein and carbohydrates are only 4 calories per gram. Food that is the most tempting has these in combination. For example: Fat and sugar combinations: doughnuts, ice cream, cookies, chocolate, cake, candy bars and other sweet pastries. Fat and salt combinations: pizza, french fries, chips, burgers, bread, hot dogs, savoury pastries and pies. A 2012 study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found through brain scans that junk food can be as addictive as tobacco and cocaine. These foods activate the same dopamine receptors as recreational drugs do. That’s why we feel so good eating concentrated sugar, salt and fat. Look at the last time you overate. Was it on carrots or carrot cake? Salad is not usually our go-to food when we’re bored – we’re much more likely to choose chocolate, ice-cream or cookies. When in a negative eating cycle we aren’t likely to reward ourselves with green smoothies after a tough day. In short, having loads of calorie

dense sweet and salty foods available to us, and having a natural proclivity to seek these out makes us vulnerable to bad eating habits. Making the right food choices can be stressful. Your brain is a calorie consuming machine and feeds primarily on glucose. The brain takes up 2% of your bodyweight, yet uses 20% of available energy. It’s the largest energy-consuming organ in the body. Negative emotions like worry or stress boost brain activity (neurotransmission). In turn, your brain burns through glucose storage quicker. A 2007 study found that if your blood sugar levels drop it leads to poor self-control and bad decisionmaking. Hunger and low willpower is a disastrous combination. Yet using your power to choose sometimes just takes a little awareness. Keeping your blood sugar levels balanced means minimizing the temptation to choose foods that put them out of balance in the first place.

If we know that our environment is not conducive to health and that every waking moment artificial calorie dense foods are available to us it is in our best interests to be aware and to monitor our environment. Our best chance for success is to reduce the temptation and maintain willpower. Don’t blame yourself. There’s nothing wrong with you or your brain. Your body is just trying to keep you alive and unfortunately junk food manufacturers know this. Now you have a better understanding of the process and you will be able to better navigate these situations in the future.

Temptation: Remove tough choices by minimising temptation. Remove unhealthy junk foods from your home and work environment. Even better, replace them with healthy options. Fruit is a great healthy snack. Don’t let yourself get too hungry. Boost your nutrition: If you eat natural food with high levels of nutrition your body will register that it has been nourished and your brain won’t send out hunger signals. Having quality nutrition is the best way to get rid of food cravings. Willpower: Include low GI and high fibre foods in your meals. Examples include sweet potatoes, oatmeal, brown rice, beans and legumes. These foods will maintain your blood sugar level without spiking it. Mistakes: Don’t beat yourself up. Sometimes we win, sometimes we learn. Analyse your mistakes. Think how you can approach the situation differently next time it occurs. Then plan and have ready alternatives. Exercise: Move your body, it releases endorphins. Even if just a few minutes of walking, it’s better than sitting continuously. Choose something enjoyable like dancing, swimming, rollerblading, climbing, yoga or boxing. Consistency Trumps Intensity: Aim for improvement, not perfection. If you’re trying to be perfect, you will struggle. It is your persistence that will make you achieve your goal. Environment: Surround yourself with other healthy people and note their habits and behaviours. Certain areas of the world are known to sustain more centenarians and healthy people. Studies show their environment was conducive to their health. Salty, sugary and oily fast food options were generally absent from these environments. Work harder on your environment than on yourself. Exercise Your Brain: Research studies have found that you can strengthen your will through mental exercises. Meditation and mindfulness show particualrly favourable results. Start with 5 minutes a day. After a week of consistency, you will find it’s easy to increase the duration.

FEAST ON FOOD THAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR BODY AND THE PLANET WITH OUR ROUNDUP OF AMAZING LOCAL VEGAN- AND VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS.

WELLNESS CAFÉ

EARTHMOTHER ORGANIC

Cape Town & Pretoria We’re of course rather proud of our very own growing number of health cafés. The Wellness Cafés at the V&A Waterfront and Gardens Shopping Centre offer a selection of smoothies, super juices and take-home deli treats. While the Kloof Street branch serves great breakfasts, smoothies, smoothie bowls and antioxidant juices throughout the day, the hot and cold lunch buffet – with its daily offering of veg curries, dahls, side dishes, salads and more – remains a firm favourite. If you miss the buffet or prefer to order à la carte, you might fancy a healthy burger or a comforting veg lasagna. The Wellness Café in Menlyn, Pretoria also offers a popular buffet spread, and mixes things up with a unique range of healthy cold-pressed ‘ice-cream’, baby purées and gluten-free pastries. Last but certainly not least, our brand new café in Cavendish Square offers our signature juices and smoothies, the delicious lunch buffet spread, and an amazing new range of vegan sushi.

Melrose, Johannesburg We absolutely love the call to action of this quirky little vegan eatery in Jozi: ‘No one hurt. Every one fed.’ And fed you certainly will be. Ever heard of a ‘bigger best’ grain-free pizza with nodairy ‘cheese’? How about a falling stack of berry and banana ‘ice dream’ sandwiched between brown rice flapjacks? You could go for a big bamboo bowl, a vegan burger or a Thai curry on a hungry day, or choose a summer wrap or salad for something a bit lighter. Free Food shows that milk-free shakes can easily rival their dairy counterparts, and that green tea can in fact taste delicious with a bit of a choc-mint upgrade. As for the desserts, one slice of their moist dark chocolate cake will sway even the most vegan-wary diners. Remember to stock up on their takehome frozen deli goods and explore their event catering options while you’re there.

Windermere, Durban This Durban gem sources its fresh produce from local producers, homestead farmers, certified organic suppliers, and its very own farm. Offering a country-feel escape a stone’s throw from Durban’s frenetic urban hum, Earthmother is one of just a few fully organic restaurants and retailers in South Africa. Its tranquil garden café’s menu is based on how its owners eat at home: the food is simple, healthy, fresh and delicious. While all the meals are prepared from scratch, those in search of a quicker bite can pick something up from the extensive deli or retail section, which stocks a wide range of organic items – from food and household to baby and gifting products. To prove that health is always top of the menu, Earthmother shares its beautiful space with two resident homeopaths and The Lotus Room massage and alternative therapy centre.

THE HUNGRY HERBIVORE

SPIRIT CAFÉ

Muldersdrift, Johannesburg This Joburg restaurant with a difference is situated on a blissful organic smallholding, where farm-to-table dishes encourage super nutritious plant-based eating. The rustic café offers a comforting atmosphere, with wholesome food served for both the body and the soul. Choose from a selection of handcrafted breakfast and lunch options or pop in for the impressive buffet from 11 am. Dining on the Leafy Greens farm allows you to be fully conscious of the origin of your food – a factor that’s missing from most restaurants today. While you’re there, stock up on the shop’s wide range of vegan health, beauty and food products to take the Leafy Greens experience back home with you.

Cape Town City Centre Stepping into this popular new restaurant on Orphan Street is like stumbling into a little oasis amidst the concrete and smog of the city centre. The intimate interior blends natural and chic deco elements, and it’s hard to focus on finding a table when an array of treats the likes of coconut chips, vegan choc chip cookies and superfood bars beckons from the counter. Choosing what to order is equally challenging. Feast on the house burger with sweet potato kimchi patty or keep it light with lettuce cups filled with crispy tempeh, almond ricotta, cranberry and coconut. We went for the raw option – a butternut and seed base pizza slice with sundried tomato purée, avocado and cashew ‘cream cheese’ followed by a decadent raw chocolate cupcake with a surprising cashew cream centre. If you don’t opt for the usual fresh juice or superfood smoothie, you can sip on something a bit different – like iced organic matcha or the ‘hot lava’ organic cacao with cayenne pepper. This 100% vegan eatery certainly delivers on its promise of happy, healthy, comfort food.

Constantia, Cape Town An offshoot of the popular YogaSpirit studio, this bustling little café caters perfectly to its yogi clientele. Lunches are seasonal and creative, with the menu changing every day. Build your own plate and savour the magical way all the different flavours come together. We chose to go all out and enjoy a fourdish plate, feasting on a bun-less veggie burger with sweet potato, cauliflower, kale, lentils, zucchini, veggie noodles and sweet and sour chickpeas! Not surprisingly, lunch sells out fast – so make sure you arrive by 12:30 to sample everything that’s on offer. If you’re so eager that you arrive a bit too early, you may as well get started on a superfood power breakfast or sip on one of Lady Bonin’s popular speciality teas. You’ll also find tasty smoothies and juices with irresistible names like Chocolation, Fire Goddess, Forest Gnome and Jou Ma se Elixir. Our verdict? A super healthy little restaurant with a delicious and creative spread that’s perfect for your post-yoga refuel.

BULLETIN

WE GREEN MONDAY Green Monday is a global movement promoted by Humane Society International (HSI), and South Africa is one of the first countries to introduce the concept. When South Africans join the Green Monday movement, they make a statement about the kind of world they want to live in and leave to their children. That world is much healthier, cleaner, and more humane. By making a simple change in our diet just one day a week, we can significantly reduce the serious health, environmental and animal welfare problems that stem from raising 77 billion land animals and countless numbers of aquatic animals for food each year. You have the power to embrace a sustainable future – one green meal at a time! Sign up for Green Monday SA and join the movement today.

We love Green Monday because it encourages South Africans to lessen their carbon footprint and make a positive change in the world. Log onto www.greenmonday.co.za/join and watch a video that explains more. The site also has lots of amazing recipes you can use to replace meat options.

WAZUPA This is a local South African app that connects people who love to eat with people who love to cook When Lance Baum and his wife had a baby, their friends started dropping off home cooked meals for them. Lance loved tasting everyone’s food and was inspired to form an app that extended the concept to neighbours nationally. It’s a way for foodies to do what they love and earn a secondary income and a way for ‘grazers’ to get wholesome food in their

neighbourhood without having to cook it themselves. “People want to eat healthier,” says Lance, “and we can help remove the guilt of junk takeaways, as many of us are just too busy.” The Wazupa platform allows South Africans to set up their own food businesses by simply creating a profile and then setting out menu items by photographing and pricing their best dishes. Each chef can also specify working hours. Wazupa earns 15% off the retail selling price of the transaction, but carries the credit card and other processing fees. The app has seen tremendous interest and growth. Since it became available in July 2016, it has already activated 150 chefs and more than 650 grazers. Over 2000 menu items have been loaded. Wazupa is available in app stores for iPhone and for Android or online at www.wazupa. com.

SEA BIN GENIUS Two Australian surfers tired of bumping up against trash while they’re surfing have quit their jobs and come up with a brilliant solution to combat the millions of trash in our oceans. Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski’s Seabin invention is a simple bucket type contraption with a filtration system so easy to use. The water filtration system is similar to what you see in a fish tank, but it has the potential to clean up an entire ocean. It can be installed at any floating dock and is designed to suck up any trash or oil floating nearby in harbours. The bucket connects to a water pump, sucking in any floating trash inside a removable mesh bag. There is also an optional oil-water separator system inside the pump. It can remove oil and detergents from the seawater before spitting it back into the ocean, pollution-free, through the other side of the pump. It’s like a skimmer box in a pool filter. Whether through twist of fate or by design Turton and Ceglinski say they have never caught a fish or marine animal in their pumps in four years of testing. The Seabin’s creators said their device is something that harbours can start using to clean our oceans now. They’re starting “close to the source of the problem in a controlled environment,” say the creators.

“It’s a big mission, but it can be done. In fact, we’re doing it right now.” Seabin is using Indiegogo to raise funds for commercial production and so far are looking good. Find more about the Sea Bin Project on www.seabinproject.com

A TALE OF TAILS PREVENT SUFFERING AND OVER POPULATION OF ABUSED AND NEGLECTED TOWNSHIP DOGS BY SUPPORTING THE ORGANISATION AFRICAN TAILS Once upon a time in December 2006, an organisation called African Tails was born on the dusty streets of Du Noon and Joe Slovo townships. Its aim was simple: to curb the over-population and suffering of abused and neglected township dogs. Every abused and neglected street dog deserves a happy ending. Whether it’s finding a puppy a loving new home, feeding a starving stray, curbing the cycle of overpopulation through regular sterilisation campaigns or simply euthanasing a suffering animal, African Tails is doing its best to write new stories of hope and triumph in the places that need them most. The African Tails team and supporters are united in their love for the uniquely African dog, Canis Africanis. It’s frequently found in rural areas and on the streets of South Africa’s informal settlements, and the everincreasing number of stray dogs in these areas adds fuel to the cycle of abuse, suffering and neglect. With this in mind, the organisation’s key focus is on ongoing sterilisation programmes that address the cause, rather than the symptoms, of the dire state of the majority of animals in Cape Town’s informal settlements. We have more than enough dogs in South Africa – what we now need is enough people to love them! To date, African Tails has sterilised over 8,200 animals. The organisation is often also called upon by pet owners from informal settlements to help injured or sick animals. As the majority of these owners don’t even have access to transport to get the animals to the centre,

African Tails sees to it that the animals are collected, treated by a vet, and returned to the owners once recovered. They also run vaccination and dipping campaigns, and provide much needed shelter and food by dropping off kennels and food for hundreds of township animals each year. Education is another cornerstone of the African Tails approach, as it’s essential for a successful and sustainable pet population management and animal welfare programme in the communities. The dedicated team focuses on educating residents about the importance of sterilisation, the value of the incredible Canis Africanis, and how to responsibly care for domestic animals. The centre does not have a shelter facility, but operates on a system of foster homes in and around the greater Cape Town area. To date, they have rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed over 1,500 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, giving them the second chance they deserve.

TRIBUTE TO OUR

BONE STRUCTURE by Dr Kevin Lentin

AH, DEM BONES, DEM BONES... OUR BONES ARE THE ONE PART OF OUR ANATOMY WE NEGLECT ALMOST TOTALLY, YET OUR BONES ARE ALIVE, GROWING AND CONSTANTLY CHANGING. THE SKELETON PERFORMS SO MANY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS.

DID YOU KNOW? There are 206 bones that make up the adult skeleton, yet, more often than not, the skeleton is one of the ‘forgotten’ parts of our anatomy – that’s until something goes wrong with it.

38

helping you live life well

Structurally, the skeleton: • •

provides structure and support for the whole body and allows us to maintain our upright posture

protects vital parts of our anatomy, the brain, spinal cord and internal organs for example

together with the muscles, ligaments and tendons allows us to move about

Besides that the skeleton is a storehouse for important nutrients, including calcium and phosphorous, both important for optimum health. And, finally the bones are responsible for the production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets produced in the red bone marrow of the long bones. Some interesting facts about the skeleton include: •

the hands (54 including the wrist) and feet (26) have the most bones

the largest bone in the human body is the femur (the thigh bone) and the smallest is the stapes (one of the bones in the ear)

on average our bones comprise approximately 15% of body weight

ANATOMY OF A BONE Bones have 3 primary components: •

. •

Periosteum – this is the very outer membrane of the bone through which veins, arteries and nerves enter the inner layers to bring nutrients and neurological innervation.

Cortical layer – the hard outer layer also called compact bone. The cortical layer accounts for about 80% of the bone strength and is the ‘living’ part of the bone containing osteoblasts that make bone and osteoclasts that resorb bone Cancellous layer – also known as the spongy bone because it’s much softer, containing the marrow. Platelets and red and white blood cells are manufactured within the cancellous layer.

Simply looking at a bone one might be fooled by its relatively simple appearance. In reality nothing could be further from the truth. A bone is anything but simple.

WITHOUT A SKELETON WE’D SIMPLY EXIST AS AMORPHOUS BLOBS, NOT A VERY ATTRACTIVE THOUGHT.

Bones are a complex set of living cells embedded in a matrix composed of both organic material (produced in the body) which is predominantly collagen and inorganic, which is primarily hydroxyapatite (more about this below), calcium and phosphorus. It’s the combination of the organic and inorganic material that gives bone its intrinsic strength. Hydroxyapatite is the predominant inorganic compound found in both bones and teeth and is largely responsible for the ‘hardness’ of bone. As I have mentioned, bones are living things and need to be fed. Bone reaches its maximum density and strength by around the age of 25 years of age. After that, there is a gradual, but perceptible loss of bone density, more pronounced in females as estrogen production reduces. This can lead to osteopenia and eventually osteoporosis if bones aren’t given optimal nutrition and care.

39

health

Building bone strength usually isn’t something parents actively consider when children are in their formative years, yet this is the time when special attention should be paid to optimum nutrition for the skeleton. The primary nutrients for building optimum density and bone strength are amino acids (from protein and specifically animal protein), Calcium, Phosphorus and Vitamin D, necessary for calcium absorption. These nutrients, as well as intermittent exposure to sunlight, supply the necessary ingredients for healthy bones: • Yoghurt (preferably unsweetened) • Milk • Cheese • Salmon, tuna, sardines and other small fish • Eggs • Spinach and other green leafy vegetables • Oranges and other fruits A diet deficient in these natural, healthy foods will actually slow down and even prevent

40

helping you live life well

optimum bone building and function. This type of diet is often referred to as the SAD diet (South African Diet!) – high in processed food, fast foods, saturated fats, refined foods and sugars. Besides a nutrient dense diet, exercise is crucial to build strong bones and to prevent bones from breaking down and weakening. Resistance exercise (weight training) and exercise where compressive forces are transmitted through the bones, like jogging, re-bounding, aerobics and others make a huge difference to maintaining optimal bone density. The unfortunate part about not concentrating on building healthy, strong bones is that the effects are only felt in the latter years of life. I’m a great believer in supplementation for healthy bones. How you supplement is important and should be guided by a nutritionist or health professional, well versed in the right type of diet and targeted supplementation, as well as the necessary blood tests to evaluate any potential deficiencies.

Howling at

the moon by Kirsten Alexander

WHEN LAST DID YOU WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT BECAUSE THE MOON WAS FULL – NOT BECAUSE OF THE LIGHT, BUT BECAUSE SOMETHING DEEPER, MORE PRIMAL WAS CALLING OUT TO YOU?

DID YOU KNOW? Changes in the earth’s magnetic field have been shown to affect human heart rhythms and have been associated with changes in brain and nervous-system activity; athletic performance, memory and other tasks; synthesis of nutrients in plants and algae; the number of reported traffic violations and accidents; mortality from heart attacks and strokes; and incidence of depression and suicide.

42

helping you live life well

Just about every living thing responds to the earth’s rhythms – at the most basic, this is called the circadian rhythm and its why we get tired, wake up, need to eat and so on. It’s an intrinsic thing and the more connected you are to the earth and nature’s own rhythms, the more efficiently your body will work. Disrupted circadian rhythms have been linked to obesity, heart disease and all sorts of other modern-day maladies. The study of Interconnectedness is becoming more mainstream, but is still in its infancy. The basis of connectedness is that because it’s been well established that the resonant frequencies in the earth’s various magnetic fields directly overlap with those of the human brain, cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems, it shouldn’t be surprising that numerous physiological rhythms in humans and global collective behaviors are not only synchronized with solar and geomagnetic activity, but that disruptions in these fields can create adverse effects on human health and behaviour. When the earth’s magnetic field environment is disturbed, it can cause sleep disturbance, mental confusion, unusual lack of energy or a feeling of being on edge or overwhelmed for no apparent reason.

Circadian rhythms mirror the patters of the moons gravitational pull on earth – which results in low and high tide every day. Many women also experience this tide-like pull with their monthly menstruation. But all humans have highs and lows; the low usually happens around 4am when your body temperature is at its lowest, and the high at around 4pm when your body temperature reaches its highest point. Usually if you feel an energy slump after lunch, you’ll pick up again in the late afternoon because your body has reached its peak energy cycle. GET CONNECTED It’s not enough to simply know about nature and her seasons. In order to really get connected, you need to be mindful of the subtle changes that occur every minute of every day. Of course, there are the seasons which are generally quite noticeable – the rainy season, high summer, wind, and most people are aware of when to plant certain things and when to bring out the winter woollies. But with modern technology getting in the way, the subtler changes aren’t that noticeable. Certainly, waking and sleeping with the sun seems an impossible task – especially when there’s dinner to be cooked, homework to be done and the latest series to be watched.

So, how do you become more aware of how your body interacts with the earth? In his book ‘Mago’s Dream’, Ilchi Lee says, ‘although every experience that occurs in the world of the five human senses is an energy experience, you actually experience energy directly as three main sensations: the tickling sense of electricity flowing through your body (Qi); the sense of magnetic force pushing on or pulling against your body; and the sensations of hot and cold that comes from both your internal body and the external environment such as sun and air.’ INTEGRATE THE RHYTHMS OF THE EARTH INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE BY SIMPLY BEING AWARE OF WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE SUN, THE MOON, THE EARTH, THE BIRDS, CREATURES AND THE GROWING THINGS AROUND YOU. Listen: even if you live in a highly built-up area with lots of traffic or other ambient noises, if you listen carefully, you’ll still hear Mother Nature’s voice. Take some time out each day for a listening session. Train your ears to isolate certain sounds, pick up on a birdsong, the rustle of leaves; the sound of the wind. Pick out each sound individually and mindfully imagine what that sound encompasses – if its wind you’re listening to, follow its path and picture the power of nature by imaging it lifting a leaf or a swallow opening its wings to float on the slipstream. Breathe: take deep breaths outdoors and much like listening, try to isolate different smells – can you smell the earth, or a particular flower? Breathe deeply and isolate smells all the time filling your lungs with lifegiving oxygen. Touch: when last did you hold some earth in your hands? Grab a handful of earth from your garden or pot plant and explore the texture, the way it feels on your skin. Pick a flower and examine each petal, or watch a bird in flight, following its movements in the air and where it lands. See: different seasons bring different light changes – find out when sunset or sunrise will be happening and sit peacefully observing how the light changes. Watch the sun rise or fall and observe what that change does to your body.

CELEBRATE THE EARTH You don’t have to run for the hills and forsake all modern things including electricity to be in touch with nature. Integrate the earth into your daily life by simply being aware of what’s going on. Put your phone down for a few minutes a day to use your senses and celebrate what nature is offering you. Certainly take a moment to feel when your energy is at its peak and acknowledge that it’s got something to do with the moon. We’ve all experienced those days when the rain is pounding down and you’re in a hurry. That’s when you start to curse nature and wish the rain would just go away because of the negative effect it’ll have on your daily tasks. You’ll find yourself feeling a lot more peaceful if you momentarily celebrate the rain. Take a moment to understand that it’s part of nature’s pattern and you may find yourself feeling less stressed. After all, everyone knows that stressing about a potential traffic jam is almost as stressful as being in one. Try to go about your life with a natural rhythm in mind. To keep your mind aware of nature’s changing seasons and rhythms, create special moments with friends and family, or even alone, by observing some of the high moments in the natural calendar. Get a group of friends together and offer up an organic meal on the longest day of the year. Or, get cosy on a winter’s night with seasonal food and the warmth of a fire. But do those things with intentionality – talk about the food you’re eating, what the moon is doing and where the sun is. For women, be aware of your menstrual cycle and how nature is affecting it – do you experience more intense pms symptoms during a blood moon, for example? DID YOU KNOW? The word lunatic is derived from the Latin word Luna, meaning moon. The full moon has an effect on all humans, some to lesser or greater degrees and it was believed that the moon could cause intermittent insanity. But these days, you hardly see people howling at the moon – it’s because we’re a little less connected to the pulls and wavelengths of our natural world.

NIGHTTIME SKIN SERUMS ARE LIKE AN ENERGY DRINK FOR THE SKIN, FROM HERBAL ORGANICS TO ANTI-AGEING BOTANICALS AND PROBIOTIC ADVANCEMENTS WE LOOK AT POPULAR INGREDIENTS USED IN NIGHT TIME SKINCARE.

DID YOU KNOW? Skincare range Dr Hauschka is said to harvest some of their plant based ingredients before dawn when the active ingredients are in their most concentrated state. “Harvesting plants before dawn is a speciality”, explains gardener Bernhard Ehrmann. “At this time the plants are in a very concentrated state. If you are familiar with the natural rhythms, you can watch out for them – and use them.”

44

helping you live life well

Your body is finely tuned and responds to the environment and natural cycles whether you want it to or not. Everyone has what’s known as an autonomic nervous system. Within this system is the sympathetic and the parasympathetic system. The sympathetic is your day-time action, fight-or-flight system. At night, your parasympathetic system kicks in; it’s known as the rest-and-digest system. Every living organism has a system – even flowers respond at night differently to during the day, protecting their pollen from dew, or opening themselves up to night time pollen distribution. It stands to reason, then, that you need to treat your skin differently at night than

you would during the day. Your skin works pretty hard at night; studies have shown that cell turnover is eight times higher at night than it is in the day. Hormonal changes at night mean that your blood flow is boosted and your temperature is usually higher than normal; this is good news for serums that need to penetrate deeply. The higher temperature and the fact that you’re not hydrating at night means that dehydration is common – this is why nigh creams and serums are usually deeply hydrating. Give your serum help by cleansing your skin well to remove any blockages to its path under the dermis.

So what’s best for skin at night? We list some ingredients you’ll want in your night cream: •

Hyaluronic acid – is a natural humectant that assists your skin in holding water, so it looks smoother in the morning. For dark circles under your eyes, use an eye serum that contains Vitamin K – it’s power is in pushing away unoxygenated blood to make space for fresh blood

TIP: Experiment with Greek yoghurt left on for 10 minutes before bedtime – you’ll be pleased with the results

Sage, like many herbs has antibacterial and antifungal properties – but sage is also an anti-inflammatory and is high in antioxidants, which makes it great for keeping skin young and moisturized.

Argan oil is packed full of Vitamins A and E as well as omega-6 fatty acids, linoleic acid and antioxidants

Probiotics are showing great results for rejuvenating skin – they are known to reduce the inflammation that can trigger certain skin problems.

Almond oil is anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antiseptic. It’s a gentle oil that also smells amazing.

Topical probiotics – applied directly to your skin, is becoming a highly popular night time ritual as there is some evidence that probiotics also help build collagen.

Daffodil – IBR-Dormin is an extract from the daffodil bulb and it’s brilliant at ending dryness because it normalizes the rate at which cells are produced; when your skin is dry, your cells form too quickly to be healthy.

Rosehip seed oil – full of Vitamin C that fades pigmentation and eats up free-radicals, as well as being a natural source of retinoic acid, linoleic and linolenic acids, this is a fantastic ingredient for skin care.

Vitamin C – one of the must-haves in skincare for its powerful antioxidant action.

NEW YEAR

NEW YOU NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS ARE OLD HAT; THE NEW THINKING REQUIRES FAR LESS STRUGGLE AND A LOT MORE ALLOWING. WE LOOK AT A CONSTRUCTIVE AND MINDFUL WAY OF MANIFESTING YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS.

DID YOU KNOW? When you start replacing negative and banal thoughts with creative, clear and enlivened thoughts, immediately negative people, circumstances and happenings in your life start to disappear. Just like your thoughts, they are replaced with positive outcomes and happenings. It’s the quickest way of changing your life in the shortest amount of time.

48

helping you live life well

Writing a list of goals and objectives might seem pretty simple but making them happen and creating outcome is a little more tricky. Human behaviourists, scientists and philosophers are making it much easier to understand the laws of manifestation and those following the instructions are having life changing experiences. To practice a more effective way of achieving your goals use the principles of creative visualization. Here’s how.

into reality. It’s a law of the universe that we make our reality (‘as a man thinketh, so is he’). Immerse yourself in the joyful feeling of having already received your outcome. See it, feel it, smell it, smile at it (if it’s a car, drive it etc). Make it incredibly real and stay in the reality of it for at least a minute (more is better).

It is our tendency to want to rush out and make something happen but in truth, there is nothing extraordinary that’s necessary. Naturally when you are on the path of creative manifestation you will be directed to the means of getting what you want. You might have a gut feeling, get a whim or hunch, or feel inspired to do something. You are on the path towards it so the more you believe, relax into it and have total conviction, the quicker you will receive what you want. How it happens is none of your business.

ALL THAT WE ARE IS THE RESULT OF WHAT WE HAVE THOUGHT. THE MIND IS EVERYTHING. WHAT WE THINK WE BECOME. SIDDHARTHA GAUTAMA BUDDHA

RELAX

Get your mind into a responsive state by relaxing your body completely. The best way to do this is to take long deep breaths. While breathing, take note of releasing different parts of your body. Feel your shoulders melting down, your stomach off duty, your jaw, your eyes and mouth releasing tension. Count down from 20 knowing that with each count you relax more deeply. Empty your mind by turning any thoughts you have into passing objects. See them without engaging in them.

LET GO

REPEAT Creative visualisation is something that can be done every day. Practicing the technique makes you better and better at it. Just be aware of not getting attached to your outcome, building up resistance to it or noticing that it hasn’t happened yet. If you happen to be a firm sceptic then try an exercise that will give you proof. Try visualising something arbitrary like a red suitcase or a butterfly. Keep it top of mind and see how quickly you come across your visualised object.

CHOOSE AN OUTCOME Find something you want to achieve, whether it be an acquisition, a state of being, a relationship, more riches or whatever your heart desires. Make sure you believe it is possible. If you have a whole lot of resistance and you keep making up reasons why it won’t work then it’s not going to happen. Find something you can believe in with little or no resistance. Once you start mastering the thinking, you’ll find it easier to tackle bigger things. IMAGINE See your imagination as a multi-dimensional printer that will simply print out whatever it is you command it to print. Your imagination will convert your thought power very clearly

WATCH OUT FOR THE NEGATIVITY BIAS Survival has wired us to notice threats and danger. In the past, this is what has kept us alive. You might notice that the news, general conversation, debates are often focused on negativity. This is called the negativity bias. Because of this natural proclivity, we need to be more proactive in noticing positive experiences, positive stories, positive feelings and more.

helping you live life well

Once you’ve done the groundwork and filled your little piece of paradise with all the wonderful plants, flowers, fruit, veggies and herbs you’d like to grow, you can use recycling principles and ingenious solutions to keep your garden healthy. Here’s an A to Z of surprising garden aids, many of which you probably already have lying around the house…

Kitchen scraps planted in seedling pots with enriched soil can be used to re-grow your own fruit and veggies (you just need to know which parts of each to plant).

Aspirin dissolved in water is a great solution for fungal plant problems.

Banana peels dried and ground into fertiliser add potassium to your soil. Cinnamon sprinkled around your garden beds will deter ants. Dustbins can be made into DIY rain barrels. Eggshells sprinkled around your plants provide a rich source of calcium and deter snails. Filters from coffee machines keep soil from leaking out of pots. Garlic mixed with mint, cayenne pepper, biodegradable dishwashing liquid and water makes a great natural insect spray. Hairclips make great supports for plants that keep falling over. Ice trays can be used for freezing freshly cut herbs with water or olive oil to make them last longer. Jars can be used as pretty containers for growing herbs, provided rocks or marbles are laid at the bottom to help with drainage.

Get all your garden essentials from

Lemon halves can be used to grow seedlings – simply poke a hole in the bottom for drainage, fill with potting soil, add two seeds and some water, and you’re good to go!

Shower caddies lined with felt make great hanging garden holders. T-shirts can be cut into strips to make ties for unwieldy tomato plants that don’t want to grow upright. Umbrellas that have seen better days can be dismantled into ribs that make excellent supports for top-heavy plants. Vinegar is a great weed killer and pest repellent.

IMAGINE HOW TINY LITTLE SEEDS SPROUT AND THEN OFFER UP A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST OF DELICIOUS, NOURISHING FOOD FOR OUR BODIES. IT TRULY IS MAGICAL.

Milk containers can be used as makeshift watering cans by poking holes in the lids. Nappies laid at the bottom of your pots can keep the soil moist for days! Olive oil is a natural mole repellent.

Warm water poured over seeds for 24 hours before planting helps get them ready to take root and grow strong. Xmas tree lights can be used all year round to create a magical atmosphere for your garden parties. Yoghurt containers can prevent critters from nibbling at the base of your trees – simply remove the bottom, make a split up one side, and place around the base of the tree. Zeolite, which usually comes in powder or granular form, is an excellent mineral for improving the health of your veggie garden and potted plants.

Photo albums can be used to organise unplanted seeds (the packets fit nicely into the sleeves). Quills you pick up from your porcupine friends can be used as supports to help fragile plants grow upright. Rabbit pellets are used by many folk to fertilise their gardens.

WHERE DOES THE BODY END AND THE MIND BEGIN?

DID YOU KNOW? • The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or join together. • According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is considered to be the first teacher of yoga. • Ancient yogis believed that we only have a limited number of breaths in each life. So it made sense to stretch our life out a bit longer by taking slow and deep breaths. • Swami Vivekananda is credited for being the greatest proponent of Yoga in the West. • A 2013 study claims that yoga therapy could benefit people living with depression, schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. • Yoga poses stimulate the regular secretion of hormones from the endocrine glands, promoting overall physical and emotional health.

Roxy Louw practicing yoga on the ocean

‘Firm Your Butt with Yoga’, ‘Yoga for Killer Abs’ and ‘Yoga for Bedroom Flexibility’ are all glossy magazine cover lines that have made me cringe. There’s no denying the fact that #yoga has become a pop culture trend, and it’s great that the practice is being made available to the masses. But although many of the proponents of today’s myriad new ‘brands’ of yoga (think Easy Yoga, Desk Yoga, Yoga for Lovers and Yoga for Pets) are indeed sincere in their teachings and trying to promote yoga in their own ways, many of their methods have eliminated some of the most essential (and beneficial) elements of the practice. The physical poses, or asanas, that most of us have come to know as ‘yoga’ actually represent only one of the eight limbs of the traditional yogic path.

It’s true that these postures are ancient, tried-and-tested exercises developed over thousands of years to purposefully exercise every muscle, nerve and gland in the human body, and that a committed asana practice will make your body strong, elastic, light and grounded. But yoga is so much more that an exercise routine. It does train the body, but it does so in an attempt to make it a fit vehicle for the soul. The fitness benefits are really just the side effects. B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the world’s foremost yoga teachers and the founder of Iyengar yoga, is famous for asking: “Where does the body end and the mind begin? Where does the mind end and the spirit begin?” The answer he found through his yoga practice was that, “They cannot be divided as they are interrelated and but different aspects of the same all-pervading divine consciousness.”

Through its often rigorous exercising of the body, yoga aims to train the mind to concentrate and turn inwards. The asanas teach us to pay attention to what is happening in the moment. If we don’t, we could put our bodies at risk. We are invited to direct our minds (and our breath) to the core of each posture, where they are joined in harmony with the body. This kind of symbiotic union can turn our minds – which for many of us are our worst enemies – into our best friends. While the mind is stilled by the asanas and the breath, the moving meditation of yoga also encourages us to accept things as they are, exactly as they come and go. If considering the practice of yoga as a bridge to your inner world and energy feels a bit too ‘woo woo’ for you, you might resonate better with the fact that yoga works on several levels to improve brain function and balance. It removes impediments from the musculoskeletal and circulatory systems, increasing blood flow to the brain. It has also been proven to change negative brain chemistry, balancing and reducing caustic acids and decreasing the sympathetic nervous system (also known as the fight or flight response). Whether you respond better to the idea of universal life force or pure brain chemistry, if you can use the state of mind created in your yoga practice to sustain you until the next session, you will surely come to understand how true yoga is actually simply the science of living correctly.

The Eightfold Path of Yoga

Yama the practice of universal moral principles Niyama the practice of personal discipline Asana the practice of physical postures Pranayama control of the breath Pratyahara the practice of withdrawal of the senses Dharana the practice of focused attention Dhyana the practice of meditation Samadhi self-realisation/enlightenment

My Journey into the Essence of Yoga by Roxy Louw Famous local surfer and model Roxy Louw has recently found a new love in yoga. She tells us about her move towards the practice. I began my yoga journey about three and a half years ago. As a spiritual person, I have always been attracted to it but somehow just never managed to get myself onto a mat until then. When I stepped out of my first class, I experienced an unprecedented clarity of mind. I felt as close to my idea of spirit as I do when I’m surfing an incredible wave. Hungry for more of this feeling, I finally enrolled in a yoga teacher training in Thailand last year. While I’d enjoyed the ‘power’ classes at the studio I attended in Cape Town, I loved the more traditional yoga I experienced on my training. I feel that a lot of people tend to do physical exercise from a very ego-driven state. We need to learn to be more gentle with ourselves, seeing yoga as a holistic system of healing rather than a means of achieving an exercise goal. As I’ve also studied nutrition, I’ve come to focus a lot on the idea of how we can nourish ourselves on all levels. I’m proud to say that my journey has led me to create Green Leaf Vitality – my contribution to holistic health and the vehicle through which I will be offering my highly customised yoga and wellbeing retreats throughout South Africa this year. If you’d like to walk alongside Roxy on a journey towards true (rather than surfacelevel) health, follow her Facebook page (@greenleafvitality) for updates on retreat dates and venues for the year.

SOBER & SEXY Irish born Fiona McCosh has launched a 2017 fundraising calendar featuring tastefully photographed naked recovering addicts. The aim is to break down the walls of stigma and shame surrounding addiction, as well as raising money for the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre. As a recovering addict herself, Fiona is passionate about spreading a message of hope. “I want to challenge misconceptions about recovering addicts and portray them in a positive light. HOLISTIC RENEWAL The former Chief Financial Officer of an energy company, J.P Nobrega gave up his position to dedicate himself to a non-profit organisation called RADA an acronym for rape, alcohol, drug and abuse that aims to help our world become a better, healthier and safer place through various community projects. By taking positive, meaningful and effective action, RADA aims to combat these addictions and atrocities by building comprehensive renewal in South Africa. RADA provides holistic intervention to address issues of abuse and addiction – using proactive education programmes to develop skills, behaviours and attitudes which lead to improved self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decisionmaking, including reactive healing processes in caring for people who face adversity. The RADA approach to renewal is based on the premise that people need to understand they are entirely responsible for and accountable to themselves. RADA helps people recognise that they have the power and energy within themselves to get back onto the road to recovery and ultimately lead a fulfilled life. The healing process begins with a safe environment that is nurturing and supportive. RADA’s psychologists, social workers, therapists and caregivers work closely with each person’s own unique set of circumstances – political, historical, circumstantial – to locate their own source of strength and regain a healthy functional life. www.rada.co.za

FINDING VALUE So how do we work out what our highest values are? Popular teacher Dr Demartini believes the answers are all around us: what we fill our spaces with, what we spend our leisure time doing, what energises us, what we spend our money on, what we think about, where we are most effective. "Often our values arise from our conscious or unconscious voids," he says. "What you perceive as most missing in your life often becomes what you perceive as most important. The more important a value is - the higher it will be on your hierarchy of values and the more discipline and order you will have around it. The less important a value is - the lower it will be on your hierarchy of values and the less discipline and more disorder you will have associated with it. Finding out your values is an important part of knowing more about who you are.

JEANNE WELSH Wellness for Kids

We are all born equal, with the same divine potential and gifts available to each of us. Yet most of us are only accessing about 6% of our potential. What if we could access this potential that is locked in our DNA how different would our lives and the world be? It is my passion to remind my clients of their divine potential. The healing modalities and classes I offer begin this process of transformation from the mundane to the divine. To step into our power and to live a life of brilliance is not easy, as we often fear our potential. Marianne Williamson said: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” My role as a Life Activation practitioner, healer and initiated guide is to support my clients in the process of self-discovery and empowerment so that they can shine their light and step into their divine purpose and power.

As a kids yoga teacher I get to spend time with young and incredibly amazing children, and I want to make sure that they grow up to love themselves in a way that I never learned myself. My sense of self-esteem had to be learned and cultivated as I became an adult. For whatever reason(s), I just missed the boat on how to love and appreciate myself. This led to countless mistakes and painful decisions that quite possibly may have been avoided had I learned early on just how awesome and worthy I am as an individual. While I wouldn’t want to have missed out on the priceless lessons that have come from the life I’ve led, my hope as a children's wellness practitioner is to help guide children down a different and less painful path wherever possible. I’ve turned my life’s work and career into helping children while they’re young and able to really absorb the lessons instead of having to learn it all firsthand later on in life. My theory is that if you grow up learning how to love yourself and feeling safe and loved in your environment, you’ll grow to be a happy, healthy, kind, compassionate and loving adult. When the world is filled with people that feel that way, we’ll see more compassion and kindness on a much grander scale. I don’t know about you, but I absolutely want to live in world like that. I’ve developed a programme called Calm Classrooms, and made it into a card deck that can be used to apply social-emotional practices in any learning environment. I am currently teaching at local schools and also offer one-on-one sessions with children at their homes, where I am able to incorporate my Healthy Eating for Children offering too. My aim is to get this invaluable work out to every child possible.

METKA ZURMAN Life Coach & Advanced TRE® Trauma Release Provider Trauma lies at the root of much of the chronic pain for which a cause has never been determined. All trauma, whether physiological, cognitive, emotional or interpersonal, inevitably expresses itself in the body. During stressful experiences, an instinctive and intricate interaction of biological, neurological and nervous system reactions occur, contracting the muscles of the body to protect the organism from harm. Unless these deep unconscious contractions are released, the body is unable to return to a calm and balanced state. Created by traumatologist Dr. David Berceli PhD., TRE® Trauma Release Exercises assist the body in releasing the deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma that are generated during stressful events. It does this by safely activating a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating, which serves to calm and rebalance the nervous system. When this muscular mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return to balance and calm. Clients who learn and use TRE® report a reduction in the symptoms of anxiety, depression, work, family and financial stress, chronic medical conditions, aches and pains, fatigue, fibromyalgia, gastro intestinal distress, trauma, grief, headaches, high blood pressure, panic attacks, sleep problems, skin disorders and more. TRE® is safe, natural, effective and easy to learn. As a trauma survivor myself, I teach TRE® with passion and conviction because it improved the way I felt, both physically and emotionally, so profoundly. After a six-week programme, I became an instant convert. It has now become my regular practice and a big part of my work.

KAREN ALLEN & LINDY KAESE Healing with Horses We have been involved with horses from a young age, and noticed quite early on how beneficial they are for humans. They are authentic creatures working in the emotional realm. When you work with a horse, you are brought into alignment with that authenticity and encouraged to acknowledge and honour your own emotions. A herd of horses is well bonded, and in our equine journey work we introduce people to the concept of the herd and the well-established structures therein. The process is transformative but gentle. There isn't any riding involved, but rather much observation, journalling, discussion and self-reflection. Working with horses is also a powerful way to acknowledge and triumph over fear. If you overcome fear, you can feed a horse a carrot or lead her by the reins, for example. This newfound courage will translate into all areas of your life. It's okay to be scared or anxious, but the horse will sense it. And in quite miraculous fashion, the horse will sense the moment you've accepted your fear (before you've even overcome it and taken control of the situation) and respond accordingly. A horse's heartbeat is slower than ours, and spending time with them actually helps us to calm down, take deeper breaths and slow down. A beautiful sense of synchronicity develops just from touching a horse or being in its presence. Working with horses gets us in touch with the transformative power of our feelings and intuition, whether we are ready to acknowledge this consciously or not. One does not have to be special or experienced in the supernatural - rather, it is the emotion itself that is a resonant, multi-dimensional force that connects all sentient beings. We run our powerful Equine Journey workshops over two days on a tranquil farm in Brandwacht. The scheduled workshops take place every two months, with private workshops arranged on request.

JUDY SWART Pure Awakening Massage, Reiki & Beauty Therapy

DR. MICHAEL BLOCH Homeopath & PresentChild Practitioner

In 2005 I completed my two-year studies in somatology at Camelot International. I started working at salons while I was still studying, going on to work at a skincare clinic where I did lots of medical aesthetic work on graduation. However I have always preferred the more holistic side of things the nurturing spa environment rather than the clinical purely results-driven aesthetic field. I love creating a space for relaxation, and my massage and reiki skills allow me to do this for my clients. I spent a few years working for a top nationwide spa in three five-star destinations, which cemented my interest in the therapeutic spa environment. I particularly loved my work at Kruger National Park, where I was able to offer a wellness experience that was immersed in nature. It was in the wilderness that I got a feel for the joys of mobile treatments. After rounding off my five-star spa experience with some time spent working at the Arabella Spa at the Westin Hotel, I took the plunge and created my own mobile operation, drawing on my already loyal client base to begin. I believe that people have massages because they really just crave touch and connection. Metaphysically, a pain manifesting in the body is so often from an emotional imbalance or a lack of love in some respect, and I create a safe and non-judgmental space for my clients - who have all become friends - to come and 'offload'. Adding the reiki to my offering last year also helped me to be able to work on my clients on all levels, beyond just the physical. I've completed Julia Tiffin's Empower Thyself course, and will be enrolling in the Healers Academy at the Modern Mystic School next year so that I can add yet another powerful tool - Life Activation - to my healing offering. I offer a range of beauty and wellness packages to fit a busy lifestyle. These can all be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home, guesthouse or hotel.

I run a broad-spectrum homeopathic practice, with a deep interest and specialty in chronic issues, particularly in children. 'Homeo' means similar and 'pathy' means suffering. One of the central premises of homeopathy is the law of similars. The same substance that can create something in a healthy person can cure it in an unhealthy person. As an extension of my practice, I use the complementary PresentChild technique. I am the only PresentChild practitioner in South Africa. PresentChild is a modality from Holland, and was only taught and practised there until three years ago. I was lucky enough to be part of the first group of international training in English. The central idea of PresentChild is that a child, through her behaviour/illnesses, presents a message or story to her parents about their own world. The process of translation, which is what I practice, takes this story and translates it in a way that the parent can relate to. The child is holding a message for the parent, and when the parent understands it, the child is healed. For example, if a child is having temper tantrums, she might be showing her parents their own irritable side or where they're having their own inner meltdowns. A nice metaphor for PresentChild is the idea that if the apple of a tree is ill, you don't treat the apple - you treat the tree. There are two ways of engaging the method - either through one-on-one interview, feedback and follow-up sessions, or through group parent day workshops. The latter are nice and intimate, with no more than six people present at each. In the workshops one learns a bit of hands-on translation and experiences mini-translations within a group context. The workshops are less intense than the one-on-one sessions, and people often use them to get a feel for the method and then come for private consultations afterwards.
