publisher's letter New beginnings are exciting and the New Year always manages to draw a neat line in time, which is probably why so many people choose this as a time to make resolutions and promises to themselves. While I believe there’s no time like the present if you truly want to make a change in your life, there is something quite inspirational about beginning a whole new year.

contents

In this issue, we focus on those new beginnings, helping you through the good decisions you’ve made to live life well. In fact, this issue is all about you. I was particularly interested in the Eat Well article about intuitive eating – even though I strive to eat a healthy diet; I don’t always listen to my body effectively. Business and daily life sometimes distract me from what my body is saying. If you want to create a clear pathway to health, one of the first things you need to do is listen, and listen well.

20

In Be Well, we focus on detoxing – getting rid of the build-up of toxins in your body. Also in Be Well, we explore the very common problem of constipation – a good detox diet may just help you to ease your body into full working order.

28

Many people get great joy from pottering around their gardens - it’s a fabulous way to de-stress. We also highlight a book written by Sharni Quinn about what it takes to make a change in your life. We focus on Bipolar, not a lot has been written on the subject from the perspective of living with someone with this diagnosis. It’s certainly an interesting read, giving you an insight into the condition that will likely be a motivation to others in similar situations.

34 40

We’ve exposed various forms of dance in the Wellness Magazine and Nia dancing is particularly exciting in terms of free expression and body exploration. As for our Love Well article, it’s good to have tips on how to bring up your children in a positive environment that lead them towards their own unique success. Happy New Year – I wish you all the very best. Don’t forget to visit our new store in the Paddocks shopping centre.

EAT WELL KERALAN BEEF CHILLY FRY - Roddy Louther gives an insight into the emasculation of men and suggests cooking up a Beef Chilli recipe to level the sexes. INTUITIVE EATING - Become more aware of what your body is telling you, and you will be more able to nourish your body appropriately. Ditch the diet in favour of intuitive eating and healthy eating will become instinctive rather than intrusive.

BE WELL TOP TO TOE DETOX - Toxins come from so many places; the environment, household cleaners, cosmetics, food…they even come from our thoughts. We look at what’s involved in a complete, all round detox. LETTING GO - Good digestion and elimination is vital to feeling and looking good – sometimes, however, things get a little stopped-up resulting in constipation. Natural ways to stimulate good digestion and create good gut health are covered in this article.

LIVE WELL PLANT POWER - Plant flowers that match your aspirations, whether love, riches or trust we can connect ourselves with healing and motivating energies from plants. THE OTHER SIDE OF BIPOLAR - While much has been written and explored about the ravages of Bipolar not much advice is available about living with someone with this disorder. An exploration of coping methods and what to expect helps tremendously. FOLLOW YOUR SUN - Now is the perfect time of year to break free from old limiting beliefs. Sharni Quinn inspires you to stand in your power, speak your truth and act according to your highest vision. CHOOSING TO LIVE - We follow Davey du Plessis’ journey of survival through the jungle and learn lessons in resilience and tenacity. MIND MAPPING - Instead of making New Year resolutions that seem like rules and feel restrictive, try an alternative way of plotting your wants, hopes and needs through mind mapping.

MOVE WELL LISTEN TO YOUR BODY -Thousands of people across the world use Nia dancing for both physical and mental health. Nia is all about self expression and the joy of movement.

LOVE WELL GROWING INTO THE FUTURE – Encourage habits in your children that give them a lifetime of self-assurance, confidence and the impetus to achieve what they want. We look at how to create the right environment for kids emotionally and practically.

LOOK WELL GEISHA SECRETS – Although we associate Geisha with powdered white faces and makeup they are also known to have flawless skin. We look at beauty secrets from green tea to rice flour that originate from Geisha culture. LIQUID GOLD – Argan oil is touted as the complete multi-purpose beauty elixir you can use all over your body. We focus on 10 ways to use this oil as a beauty aid.

well said... READER LOVE WINNING LETTER The Wellness magazine is one of my favourite local publications, not only because you can pick it up for free when you visit the Wellness Warehouse but also because of the informative content that they have between their covers - topics that matter, products that count. I too often browse through South Africa’s ‘top’ monthlies, shocked at the stories that make their way past entire magazine teams. We should not be fed such garbage about men and our appearance month after month. And that’s why I love Wellness - a magazine dedicated to the natural, gorgeous you. Now where many magazines would offer, for example, a pair of cheap sunnies in their summery November issues, Wellness has a ‘Help The Rural Child’ packet tucked between its pages. This packet is for folk like you and I to declutter our homes and make our trash another man’s treasure. I declutter regularly and therefore can confidently tell you that we all have too much and that there are always things you can get rid of and pass onto someone else in need.

WE TRIED IT Zone Fitness Rouxmia Bougas heads back to the gym just in time for summer. She tries out Zone Fitness at the Lifestyles on Kloof Centre in Gardens and loves the fact it is a woman only gym. She reports. We all know how intimidating it can be to go to the weights area where all the muscle men are pumping iron. Zone Fitness focuses on affordable training and is the first women only facility, where woman can feel comfortable and train with full confidence. Their offering includes great classes from fitness for pregnant Mums- To-be, they have yoga and Zumba dancing and a great inhouse personal trainer available for group session training. There is a lovely Jacuzzi facility, sauna and steam room. Ample motivation comes from a firm emphasis on meeting training goals and the many women vigorously training together. End your session in their wonderful ‘relax room’ where you can comfortably chill out after your workout and prepare to face the rest of the day. For more info on this amazing concept Tel: 021 422-2909 Physical Address: 2nd Floor, 50 Kloof Street, Lifestyle on Kloof

Help The Rural Child runs bric a brac and second hand bookstores where donated goods get sold by volunteers to the general public and the proceeds go to supporting rural children. Help The Rural Child is even offering to pick up these filled packets from your home - you need not even drop your unwanted goods off. So what I’m suggesting is that you head on down to the Wellness Centre, pick up a free copy of their magazine, fill the packet that they provide with your unwanted goods and call someone to come and take it off your hands. The best part in all of this free, nonfussing, is that you’ll be making a difference to others.

Hearty Goji Balls

This has been one of Katara’s favourite first foods. A simple tomato soup zooped up with goji berries – she loves it.

Grind goji berries up into a powder in a power blender. They will go sticky, but this is what gives the balls their chewy taste, so go with it!

Blend until smooth and creamy. Blend the soaked, pitted dates with half a cup of the soak water into a date jam. In a food processor, grind your almonds until they reach a crumby consistency. Set two tablespoons ground almonds aside for rolling the balls in later. Add all the ingredients together, including the date jam and pulse in the food processor until well combined into a doughy consistency. Roll into balls and coat in chopped almonds. For the chocolate version, add the cacao powder and decorate with ground gojis or cacao powder. Tip: When rolling the mixture into balls, dip your fingers in water – the mixture won’t stick to your fingers as much.

BRITA MEET OUR SUPPLIER

The leading supplier of innovative products and solutions for individual drinking enjoyment.

F

or almost 40 years BRITA has been among the leading experts in the field of water optimisation. The family business, founded in 1966, has become two global companies that manufacture water filtration products for household and professional applications.

Better water at any point of use Tap water, whilst safe, may contain substances that affect its taste and odour. These include chlorine, organic impurities and certain pesticides. BRITA water filters reduce these substances, and also heavy metals like lead and copper. This means taste and appearance of hot and cold drinks are improved.
BRITA is also ideal for use in cooking and food preparation. Temporary water hardness, as seen in limescale build up
in kettles - is also reduced.

From a pear tree to market leadership The creation and successful filling of a market niche using a household device

8

- that is the life’s work of the German entrepreneur Heinz Hankammer.

In 1966, he had the far-sighted vision of optimising normal tap water with the simplest means possible and developed a filter for producing completely desalinated water, as pure as distilled water. Brita, his daughter’s name, was chosen as the company name.

The whole family helped Heinz Hankammer set up his small business, the first production was accomplished under a pear tree in the family’s garden. What started as a oneman operation soon developed rapidly into a modern, medium-sized company that increasingly expanded into international markets with above-average growth rate.

The BRITA philosophy For more than 40 years BRITA has been involved in the filtration of water and has devoted itself to the future of this essential resource.

As international market leader in the product category of water filter jugs they have a vision that focuses a world where drinking water of the highest quality everything you need to live life well

is always available to everyone.
To this end they offer innovative products and solutions for people to experience the best possible drinking water according to their individual needs.

Daily dealings are therefore characterized by the following principles:

Management is synonymous with setting an example.

Clearly defined & attainable objectives produce latitude.

Understanding each other.

Globalism as an opportunity & future.

Encouragement & challenges to our employees.

Assessment & reward for performance.

Lifelong learning.

Let’s talk

RELATIONSHIPS

by Roddy Louther

In this issue, our food columnist Roddy Louther, decided not to bother us with deep fried waffles on the subject of “All about You”. Rather he thought he’d ‘wok sear’ our Veld Fed beef, with the spicy, hot subject of the current disposition and future of men in modern heterosexual relationships.

I

share a house with two beautiful, single women; and lately have been tolerating (sic) many hours of arty love stories. Not that I don’t like such movies or that I prefer action, comedy, gangster or karate films, it’s just that – sometimes those sodden dramas can be a little damp for my dry, sometimes basic taste and seemingly inactive imagination. It struck me though, how different we really are… emotionally. At 52, single, and with a failed marriage behind me, I am just about the most unqualified person to write this article. Perhaps I should have read some literature on the subject. But as us Martians do, rather than get freaked out by reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, I prefer to watch sport on TV; or, as I did, scan the Internet on modern relationships. The picture I got was not black and white and strewn with petals. Worldwide, divorce is higher than ever. Modern teens mature faster, but attitudes towards sex and the implications (STD’s and pregnancy), have remained alarmingly immature. For a long time I have suspected there is a systematic emasculation of men going on. In America the percentage of men in prison is at an all-time high, so is the percentage of children living without fathers and the percentage of employed men is near an all-time low. Closer to home, the employment ratio between sexes also shows women overtaking men – although that’s not a bad thing, or the reason for the fall of men, or even what this article is about. Where women are portrayed in the media as nurturing and responsible, men are castigated for being the opposite. In fact our shortcomings and our failures are seized

12

upon, and amplified in a comedic massacre of our masculinity. One media message asks whether women are determined to defeat men. An advert claims, “Without us, they’d starve.” Here, women are rewarded with cheaper insurance, inferring that men are thrillseeking, irresponsible beings. Companies are biased toward employing women. Why not? Companies have gender quota obligations to fulfill. But to be fair; women are generally more conscientious, reliable and responsible, easier to manage in a company environment and, they cost less. Boom, you’re hired baby! Fact is; feminism and gender equality has led to the erosion of masculinity. And the paradox is: many women claim the most attractive thing about a man is when they take charge. What women want is a man they can be proud of, brag about and feel safe with. Without a good job, a man is not considered ‘marriage material’. Masculinity infers alpha male, lion, leader of the pride. But the essence of a man, a real man, goes much deeper than social alpha-ism. The masculine essence is ambition, assertiveness, action, strength, and fortitude. The emotional nature of the feminine craves this. Then there is the assertion that women do not understand men. For instance; men want women to understand - they need to feel useful; they need to be heard; they mono-task; they are hornier than women; they prefer you to be poorer, shorter, less intelligent and needier than they are… and so on. A friend explained his view of what men need. “Men need a battle to fight, an adventure to live and a damsel in distress to rescue.” I concur; it’s as basic as that.

everything you need to live life well

Let’s take stock: The sudden empowerment of women has had effects on society beyond what we can yet comprehend. The fact is; men are not ready to be flipped like pancakes. And neither is society. Urgent debate is needed - perhaps not to restore the position of men in society, but to consider the future of what we know. Consider a world where a boy’s role model is an emaciated version of your memory of a man. Then understand; a strong woman cannot be taken down by a strong man. And that, in today’s world, the opposite applies, equally. Sure, you don’t know everything about each other. I hope you never know everything about each other so you continue to be a mystery to your partner, or you’ll never surprise each other; and lose the capacity to flip the script. I pray you never get too comfortable with each other and lose the last thing that you should ever lose for each other. The first sign of love – respect. My dish is somewhat melancholic - of times spent in a lowly South Indian restaurant in Dubai called Kalavara; with three trodden male colleagues bullied by a social psychopathic boss, with no idea who he had working for him. This was our favorite dish, Keralan Nadan Ularthu (Beef Chilly Fry), washed down with large measures of sense disabling Stoli. It tastes best enjoyed with good conversation.

Heat up a flat pan on a high flame then reduce the heat. Add fennel, coriander seeds, cloves, peppercorns, cardamom seeds and cinnamon to the pan. Dry fry them stirring frequently until the spices darken slightly and give off an aroma. Turn off the heat and allow to cool slightly. In a mortar and pestle, grind the roasted spices into a coarse powder. Put the meat, sliced onions, green chilies, tomatoes, ground spices, and ginger and garlic pastes into a large mixing bowl. Mix well until the meat is well coated. Keep aside to marinate for at least an hour. In a separate small pan, heat the cooking oil on medium flame and add the minced onions. Fry till transparent. Add the curry leaves and mustard seeds. Cook until they stop spluttering. Then add the coconut slivers and leave until they turn a pale golden colour. Add this frying mixture to the meat and mix well. Cook the whole mixture on the stove top stirring until the meat browns. The whole dish will begin to turn a deep, dark brown colour. This dish traditionally has no gravy at all and is dry so if moisture is present, make sure it cooks away.

TIPS • •

• •

Serve hot with Sambal, Rooti’s, Puri’s, Dosas or Appams. If you prefer bigger chunks of meat, allow enough time for the marinated meat to cook until tender. Delicious results can also be achieved by simply marinating the meat in a mixture of powdered garlic, ginger, chilli, coriander seed powder and a masala mix of your choice Add more chili powder if you prefer it spicier. The dish goes particularly well with a Lager, cold beer, chilled Sauvignon Blanc, or frozen Vodka.

Eat with intent and pause every so often to check your level of fullness.

Intuitive Eating The more aware you become of what your body is telling you, the more able you’ll be to nourish your body appropriately. If dieting is something you’ve struggled with in the past, learning the process of intuitive eating will make sure healthy eating becomes instinctive and not intrusive.

14

everything you need to live life well

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

I

ntuitive eating is something that is innate – children are good at knowing when to eat what and when to stop eating and their instinct should be trusted. However, we lose this connection as we grow older and as bad habits and wants take precedent over needs. Here are ten basic tenets to help make sure you’re truly listening to the needs of your body.

CUT THE JUDGEMENT

MOVE IT

Avoid telling yourself you are being good if you eat a piece of celery, and bad if you indulge in a block of chocolate. Rather turn the good and bad into food attributes as opposed to character flaws. So, tell yourself celery is good for your health, not that you are good for eating it. It may sound like a subtle shift but its far more nurturing and far less guilt inducing.

Everyone knows exercise is good for you. But, it’s so often difficult to drag your body out of bed and off to the gym. Instead of focusing on it being good for you or almost a ‘must-do’, rather concentrate on how an exercise session makes you feel. Consider for example, the boost of energy you achieve, rather than calories burned. Knowing exercise makes you feel good is far more motivating than the fact it assists in losing weight.

THE DIET LIE There’s really no such thing as a diet that will allow you to healthily lose weight quickly in a way that’s sustainable. So, forget about fad diets and strange eating plans. You’ll only set yourself up to feel like a failure when you realise a certain diet didn’t live up to its promises and will invariably blame yourself.

It takes a little while for your body to signal satiation to your brain. So, listen carefully to your body and observe the signals that indicate you are actually full. Practice mindful eating by truly tasting each flavour, inhale the aromas, and consider the textures. Eat with intent and pause every so often to check your level of fullness

FEED YOUR HUNGER

EPICUREAN

Listen to your body when it indicates hunger. Don’t try to suppress the hunger with tidbits of energy drinks or something equally void of good nutrients. Also, don’t simply ignore hunger pangs – you’ll eventually reach a point of excessive hunger and that’s when all good intentions fly out the window. Listening carefully to your body and learning to recognise true signs of hunger will allow you to build up a sense of trust in terms of yourself and food.

PEACE TREATY If you’re one of those people who start craving food the minute you decide you’re on diet, there’s a reason for that. Just the thought of not being allowed to eat leads to a feeling of intense deprivation – the key is to give yourself permission to eat. The longer you deny yourself, the worse the ‘binge’ will be when you do finally give in, leading to greater feelings of guilt and a cycle of destructive thought patterns that will affect your self worth.

PAUSE

Become an epicurean – learn the sensual appreciation of food. Often in today’s society meal times are rushed and filled with distractions. When you eat what you really want in an environment that’s conducive to pleasurable eating, you will feel more satisfied and content. If you provide this type of experience for yourself, you’ll find it takes less food to make you feel full.

EMOTIONAL SNACKING It’s quite common to indulge in emotional eating – even boredom can bring on a nibbling frenzy. Emotional eating is not only unhealthy, but it also doesn’t solve the reason for the emotion. Look for other ways to expend your emotional energy. If you’re feeling anxious and this makes you reach for the fridge door, do 10 star jumps to get rid of the adrenaline pumping through your body that’s causing the anxiety reaction. Distract yourself with other, pleasurable or health-enhancing activities. Don’t ignore your emotions; simply try not to eat yourself through them.

BE REASONABLE Your body shape is stamped into your DNA. That’s not to say you need to completely let go and pile on the weight – that’s not healthy. But, you need to engage in a reasonable expectation of what you can and can’t achieve. Think about it – if you’re really short, it would be unreasonable to expect your body to grow so you can consider yourself tall. The same goes for your weight - so be reasonable and understand that someone else’s body shape may not actually suit who you are.

ABOUT HEALTH Being healthy is all about balance. It’s not a regimented set of rules and regulations. Make choices that honour your body, mind and spirit. Eat food that you enjoy, and make food choices that are sustainable over time. Remember that one day of indulgence isn’t going to destroy your health or make you pile on the kilos overnight. Be conscious of your overall eating patterns and you’ll be less likely to indulge often or too much.

did you know? Eating according to your temperament means understanding and embracing your individual likes and dislikes – your choices and your way of eating reflect your true, individual desires and are therefore way more suited to you than fad diets or other eating regimens.

Top to toe

DETOX

Toxins come from so many places; the environment, household cleaners, cosmetics, food… they even come from our thoughts. We look at what’s involved in a complete, all round detox.

everything you need to live life well

bewell

integrative health

O

nce you start a process of detox, because our bodies and minds are intricately connected, you might find yourself wanting to remove all sorts of things from your life. This could include toxic people, toxic thoughts, even clutter can cause stagnant toxic energy. Let’s start with the obvious – food and drink. One week out of your life isn’t a big commitment and not too daunting to stick to. Start with reasonable objectives so your system doesn’t rebel and give you undue cravings and frustrations. While we make a list of foods to exclude, it’s best not to focus on what you can’t have but rather the delicious things you can replace them with.

EAT FREELY

USE REPLACEMENTS SUGAR & SUGAR LADEN FOOD: replace with Stevia, honey or coconut blossom sugar. CONDIMENTS & cayenne pepper, amino’s, coconut cinnamon, ginger, black pepper etc.

SAUCES: replace with vegetable salt, liquid oil or use spices like mustard, parsley, basil,

BAD FATS: this means margarine, butter, mayonnaise. Replace with small amounts of coconut oil or virgin cold pressed olive oil. ANIMAL PROTEIN: replace with vegetable protein like split peas, lentils and legumes. You can also eat tofu, organic free range chicken or fish you know comes from a sustainable source.

FRUIT & VEGETABLES: make sure they are fresh and not processed, canned or frozen.

STIMULANTS: alcohol, coffee, caffeine beverages. Replace with lots of water, herbal tea, lemon water, coconut water.

NON-GLUTEN GRAINS: millet, brown rice, buckwheat, potato flour, quinoa.

DAIRY: replace with rice and nut milk and nut butters that use ingredients like almond and coconut.

NUTS & SEEDS: (in small quantities)– this includes walnuts, sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, pecans, almonds and nut butters from cashews, almonds or sesame (tahini). GREEN TEA: This has massive amounts of anti-oxidants and helps the body detox.

LEAVE OUT COMPLETELY PROCESSED FOODS: avoid these altogether - things like carbonated drinks, pastries, anything in a can or from the freezer, cheese, desserts, crisps, chocolates, caffeine, alcohol.

See how delicious you can make everything you eat. Detoxing doesn’t have to be about deprivation, it’s all about being prepared, knowing your alternatives, paying attention and exercising mindfulness. Getting lots of fresh vegs into your body can be done through juicing. Vegetables with spices can be so delicious if you take time to be creative. Blending ingredients, adding digestive spices and dousing with freshly squeezed lemon can create numerous delicious flavours. Get hold of a raw food recipe book and you will be amazed at some of the tastes you can achieve with simple ingredients. Beetroot hummus, butternut soup, Tahini, steamed spinach with sesame seeds, bean dishes are all delicious with vegetable purees and spices.

did you know?

Although we associate sugar with creating spikes in your blood sugar level and setting up cravings and energy dips, we also think of it as contributing to weight gain. Sugar though, is one of the biggest ageing culprits and speeds up the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Sugar attaches itself to the collagen fibres in your skin breaking them down. Collagen is what helps your skin look firm and plump.

TAKE A DETOX BATH All you need is Epsom salt. Put a generous amount in your bath, up to two cups. These salts are full of magnesium and encourage detoxification in the body. They also boost digestion, help remove water retention and reduce cellulite.

CHECK YOUR CHEMICAL LOAD Household cleaners can be loaded with chemicals. Chemical cleaners have been identified as contributing to skin allergies and asthma. Replace everything from your dishwashing liquid to bleach, laundry liquid, oven cleaner, drain cleaner with non toxic alternatives. The same goes for your cosmetics, your make-up, nail polishes, hair products and body creams can all be replaced with organic and natural alternatives.

SIFT THROUGH CLUTTER This means the clutter in your thoughts as well as your environment. If you find yourself thinking continuously and avidly or angrily about a situation or person, find a way to resolve and forgive - even if it’s only in your head and you can’t change the situation or person. These thoughts can create toxins in your body. See if your surroundings weigh heavily on you. Piles of filing, out of date tax returns, an endless to-do list that never gets done create stress which creates toxins.

WHY CHOOSE VIBRANT HEALTH? Vibrant Health’s products provide supplemental nutrition that supports human biochemistry. The steady decline in trace nutrient value of our fresh foods has, in the opinion of Vibrant Health, established a mandate for supplemental nutrition. We believe supplemental nutrition is no longer an option; it is instead a necessity if one hopes to achieve robust and vibrant health.

Vibrant Health seeks to assist through supplemental nutrition the healing of illness and the establishment of optimum health, as well as to design and market the most efficacious nutritional food supplements for the benefit of all men, women and children. Vibrant Health only source the finest materials they can find, putting quality ahead of their cost. They are constantly on the lookout for better materials with the aim of designing evolutionary formulas to make sure they stay ahead of the times. “There’s no doubt that we think differently from the rest of the nutrition industry. We don’t wish to be seen as a traditional nutraceutical brand. We strive to be seen as a brand built “on” science and “by” the efficacy of our formulations. And that’s why we must use these principles and practices as lampposts to guide our decisions and to keep us focused on our Mission.” Mark Timon

Mark Timon, founder and formulator of Vibrant Health says: “You have our respect. You are the person we serve. You deserve to know precisely what is in each dietary supplement you buy. That is why you will find NO misleading proprietary blends in any Vibrant Health product. We’ve used full disclosure labelling since 1976, and always will. It’s your right to know!”

Whole Food Supplements

Vibrant Health use whole food supplements, designed for the body, the way nature intended. Vibrant Health nutritional supplements are based on whole food nutrition, as Mark believes that we were designed to absorb our nutrients from food, as opposed to “nature identical” nutraceuticals. Many of the chemical supplements on the market are not recognised or absorbed well in the body. The best supplements are whole food supplements obtained by taking vitamin rich plants and capturing the vitamin complex in a chemical free process, to retain the vitamin’s function and nutrient integrity. The basic principle that explains the difference between a synthetic vitamin and whole food vitamin is that when you isolate a nutrient or vitamin out of the food complex within which it is naturally found and where it is inseparably bound to thousands of known and unknown food factors (enzymes, proteins, chaperones, glyconutrients etc.) it is no longer beneficial to life. Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C, just like Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E and Ketinoic acid is not vitamin A. Vitamins are NOT individual molecular compounds – they are biological complexes; multi-step biochemical interactions whose action depends on many factors. Vitamin activity ONLY takes place when all co-factors or components of the entire vitamin complex are present and working together as found in organic food.

Our Krill Oil is now more effective, fresher and more environmentally friendly than ever before due to the utilisation of a new harvesting system. This method, known as Eco Harvesting™, is a non-net micro-tube harvesting system that ensures no unwanted by-catch of fish, shark, seals and dolphins. Many krill oil suppliers still use the older net-trawling technology. SOLAL made the change as soon as this technology became available, in July 2013. Testing proves SOLAL’s new Krill Oil is superior due to immediate on-board oil extraction. Look for the bubble in the capsule: SOLAL’s Krill Oil is manufactured in hard V-Caps (Vcaps Plus®) capsules and air is flushed out with a non-reactive nitrogen bubble. Standard soft gel capsules are made without nitrogen and their soft capsule shell allows 50 times more damaging oxygen from the air to penetrate through the capsule shell over time. Sustainable and traceable: SOLAL’s Krill Oil source is registered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a leader in sustainability standards. Every single batch of SOLAL’s Krill Oil can be traced back to the exact GPS coordinates where it was harvested. This ensures harvesting only occurs in areas of abundance, and not from protected reserve areas. All nutraceuticals are manufactured in cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) licensed facilities. cGMP is the part of quality assurance that ensures that products are manufactured and controlled according to consistent quality standards that are appropriate for their intended use.

The human intestines are not organized to digest unnatural food or to expel the unused residue from this food

LETTING GO

Good digestion and elimination is vital to feeling and looking good – sometimes, however, things get a little stopped-up resulting in constipation.

A

lthough bowel movements are an integral part of body function, it’s not generally a subject many people feel comfortable talking about, especially women. Because of this, it’s one of the most common health complaints not adequately treated. Simple lifestyle changes can help keep you regular, but be aware that constipation can also be a sign that something else is wrong.

did you know? Around 50% of people with chronic constipation suffer from what’s known as pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD, or dyssynergia), which is basically when your pelvic muscles don’t coordinate with the abdominal wall. Biofeedback is a highly effective treatment for this type of constipation. 28

‘Constipation – this most common disease – has not decreased or improved in spite of thousands of remedies for sale on the market, and in spite of so-called medical science; simply, because the ‘diet of civilization’ is unnatural. The human intestines are not organized at all for this unnatural food to either digest it perfectly, or to expel the unused residue.’ Prof Arnold Ehret – author of The Definite Cure of Chronic Constipation

Some medications, like those that suppress the central nervous system, such as pain killers, antidepressants and blood pressure treatments, can also suppress the large intestine’s action. Some supplements, like iron or calcium can also cause constipation, however this can be relieved by also supplementing with magnesium.

Dehydration is a major cause of constipation – water assists in flushing out the toxins and your body needs fluid to keep your stool pliable.

A key is to listen to your body and take note of any food that has a constipating effect – very often, you don’t really notice the connection between food and constipation, as it’s not as a direct or quick reaction as diarrhoea. If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, of which constipation is a key element, you’ll probably be more aware of the effect certain food has on your body.

Constipation can also be an effect of low thyroid function, so if you suffer from constipation often, this is something you may want to have checked by a medical professional

FACTS ABOUT CONSTIPATION There are many causes of constipation, from dehydration and some medications to low-fibre diets and specific diseases. Although everyone is an individual and being regular means different things to different people, if you experience less than three bowel movements a week, you may consider yourself constipated. But, it’s not only about irregular or infrequent bowel movements, if you are also passing stools that are hard or small and require some straining, then constipation is generally the diagnosis. everything you need to live life well

Insoluble fibre is essential for ensuring your bowel movements are regular – additionally, insoluble fibre is a key source for fuel for the good bacteria in your gut. The bacteria ferment the fibre, resulting in the production of fatty acids that are critical nutrients for the cells in your colon. In fact, some of these fatty acids have been shown to prevent colon cancer. Get your insoluble fibre from flax, chia seeds, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

TIP VEGETABLES THAT REQUIRE A LOT OF CHEWING ARE GENERALLY HIGH FIBRE

Supplementing with probiotics is always a good idea to ensure gut health. The more commonly known lactobacillus acidophilis dominates the small intestine, so be sure to also take bifidobacteria, which are the predominant beneficial microbes in your large intestine.

IN YOUR HEAD

There’s a definitive link between gut health and psychological health, so not only can constipation contribute to a lack of energy and generally feeling under the weather, it can also lead to depression.

did you know? The gut has its own nervous system, called the enteric nervous system, which can be damaged from chronic use of laxatives.

Your body is a system and so it stands to reason that your body and brain are interconnected when it comes to health. In Ayurveda, it’s believed that constipation can be the result of a lack of downward moving energy in the body in conjunction with too much fast moving energy in the mind. So, taking 5-15 minutes out to sit

still and breathe into your lower abdomen can re-balance these energies and assist in combating constipation. Constipation can also be caused by nervous system imbalances. Good bowel elimination needs a good balance of brain chemistry, so constipation can point towards inadequate amounts of dopamine or serotonin. Additionally, conditions that impair the brain’s nerve cell, like Alzheimer’s, can also impair the intestines nervous system cells. Being relaxed and calm is definitely a contributor to regular bowel movements. However, it’s not just stress that affects this – travelling, can most definitely cause your body to stop up. This is purely psychological – you may not feel comfortable going to the toilet in a public place, or in someone else’s bathroom, so you will simply not go for however long you are away from your familiar space.

THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTION There are numerous different integrative and alternative schools of thought that link emotion to constipation. Some indicate that you become constipated when you hold on to what you have - your knowledge, your belongings, your relationships and your fears - which prevents you from interacting and communicating freely with life. Another school of thought says that constipation is connected to suppressed sexual self-expression, where there is a lack of movement in a person’s sexual energy and life force. Also it can occur in people who tend to over intellectualise to escape from truly experiencing their feelings and are unable to let go of whatever it is that no longer serves them. Author Louise Hay, best known for her book, You Can Heal Your Life, has a list of reasons and affirmations that relate to specific illnesses or diseases. In terms of constipation, she states that it is caused by refusing to release old ideas and her recommended affirmation is: ‘As I release the past, the new and fresh and vital enter. I allow life to flow through me’. In terms of bowel problems, she maintains it’s a fear of letting go and says the following affirmation will assist: ‘I freely and easily release the old and joyously welcome the new.’

GET GOING AGAIN The tips below can easily be integrated into any lifestyle and will go a long way in assisting you with regular and healthy bowel movements: •

Eat well – eliminate junk and processed food from your diet and include lots of raw food and fibre.

Drink well – ensure your body stays hydrated and avoid too many caffeinated drinks, which are diuretics and contribute to dehydration.

Move well – exercise improves muscle tone – and performance of your intestinal tract.

Go well – don’t ignore the urge to go. Ignoring a call of nature only causes the contents of your bowel to compact and enables toxins to leech out into your body.

Clean well – consider regular detoxing, such as using an oxygen based colon cleansing product to keep your gut and intestine in the all clear.

Supplement well – especially if you have or do take antibiotics regularly, you’ll need an infusion of good bacteria, so take sporebearing probiotics regularly.

Live well – try as much as possible to avoid stress. Do what you can to take at least 10 minutes out of your day everyday to meditate, ensure you get enough quality sleep and spend as much time as possible outdoors in nature.

It’s almost like our DNA is a giant manual of potentials, and our environmental triggers instruct us on which page of the manual to open and express.

PUTTING ON YOUR GENES

Dr Yesheen Singh

Sixty years ago the journal Nature ran an article describing the structure of our DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson. The article was instrumental in sparking a race to map the human genome. The research cost over $3 billion dollars. Around 3.3 billion base pairs of genomes were found, arranged into around 20 500 genes. Of these 20 500 genes there are countless variations.

W

e are only just beginning to unpack all the information around genes. Scientists are now beginning to design tests for specific genes or gene combinations that, for example show a predisposition for particular cancers or metabolic disorders.

did you know? Your body contains 50 trillion tiny cells. Almost every one of these cells contains the complete set of instructions for making you. These instructions are encoded in your DNA. The DNA in your cells is organized into chromosomes. Chromosomes are arranged into segments of DNA called genes. Imagine your DNA is an instruction manual and the genes are the different chapters in that manual. They tell your cells how to act and which attributes to express. Things like curly or straight hair, blue or brown eyes are determined by your genes.

30

Researchers were surprised by the relatively small number of genes found. They initially anticipated over 2 million genes, considering the size and complexity of the human body. But what they found was a gene count no greater than that of a mouse, who also has around 20 500 genes.

triggers work together, to activate and express the gene/s and so create the disease. If we are able to either prevent exposure to these environmental triggers or reduce their impact, we should be able to prevent or reverse the expression of these disease-causing genes.

How could these two mammals, with such different forms, have the same number of genes? Was there something besides the physical genome that allowed humans to grow and evolve beyond the size of a small mammal?

Environmental triggers can be from outside the body, like toxins in our air, water and food supply, to those originating from within the body, like prolonged exposure to high levels of stress hormones related to our thoughts, emotions and feelings. One of the most influential factors that modify genetic expression is our nutritional status. From nutrition our genes are influenced towards expressing healthy or unhealthy versions.

These questions gave rise to the fields of science we now call epigenetics and genomics. The first studies the changes in the body not related to the DNA itself. The second studies environmental factors that contribute to these changes. This gene-environment interface is now thought to be where most of the magic happens. Environmental factors communicate with our DNA, instructing little worker proteins in the cell to switch on or switch off genes that code for both health and disease. It’s almost like our DNA is a giant manual of potentials, and our environmental triggers instruct us on which page of the manual to open and express. This means that, for the most part, genetically inherited aberrations that code for disease are merely potentials that sit dormant until a collection of environmental everything you need to live life well

I like the metaphor of a loaded gun - the bullets are our inherited genetic aberrations sitting idle waiting to activate when propelled out of the barrel of the gun. We, through our lifestyle choices, choose whether to pull the trigger or leave it dormant and unexpressed. So, in the spirit of this issue on self-empowerment, take this opportunity to reflect on lifestyle choices you currently choose to engage with that may be firing your epigenetic guns straight at your DNA. imalaya AyurSlim is an ayurvedic formulation of pure herbs. AyurSlim is a clinically proven, safe and effective polyherbal formulation that helps to regulate fat production and utilisation. It also eliminates craving for sweets, normalizes energy production and utilisation in the body and helps you stay slim and healthy. It does NOT contain Ephedra and is safe and effective as a weight regulator through specific ingredients and their unique herbal properties. The main constituents of Ayurslim are Garcinia (Garcinia Cambogia), Guggul (Commiphora mukul) and Gymnema (Gymnema Slyvestre) The metabolic actions of Guggul and HCA (hydroxycitric acid) from Garcinia Cambogia, the principal constituents of Ayurslim, have been well documented. Garcinia contains hydroxycitric acid and is known to suppress hunger through the central nervous system. It also helps inhibit fatty acid synthesis and helps to reduce fat levels (lipids). Guggul (Commiphora mukul) is known to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride level. The concept of being overweight as a result of improper lipid metabolism is described in Ayurveda, and a number of formulas have been used safely for centuries.

AYURSLIM KEY INGREDIENTS INCLUDE: •

Vrikshamla / Garcinia (Garcinia cambogia) which limits the synthesis of fatty acids in the muscles and liver and thus limits production of lipids. Recent studies have shown that fruits, like Garcinia, contain a biologically active compound which is known to inhibit the synthesis of lipids and fatty acids and lowers the formation of LDL and triglycerides. Additionally, appetite is also suppressed by promoting synthesis of glycogen, this way the brain gets signals of fullness and satisfaction sooner. Garcinia

also contains significant amounts of Vitamin C and has been used as a heart tonic.

BENEFITS OF AYURSLIM:

Guggulu / Guggul (Commiphora wightii) which maintains normal cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Guggul is a resin known to increase white blood cell counts and possess strong disinfecting properties. Guggul has long been known to normalize lipid metabolism, maintain optimum cholesterol levels and HDL to LDL ratio. A broad mode of action makes this plant very helpful in building the body’s defences.

Meshashringi / Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) which helps reduce the craving for sugar and sweets and neutralises the excess sugar present in the body, thus preventing it from turning into fat. The leaves contain ingredients that reduce the intestinal absorption of glucose, and stimulate the pancreas to increase insulin production thereby decreasing sugar cravings.. It has been used in Ayurveda for several centuries to regulate sugar metabolism.

• • •

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) which helps maintain normal cholesterol levels and helps regulate bowel movements. Medhika / Fenugreek(Trigonella foenumgraecum) which helps maintain normal blood glucose levels. Fenugreek delays the digestion and absorption of glucose thereby it acts as an appetite suppressant which gives a feeling of satiety for longer periods of time.

• •

Brings about efficient burning of fat. Inhibits fatty acid synthesis, thereby reducing fat accumulation in the body. Maintains normal cholesterol levels in the body, factors that are concerned with fat accumulation. Reduces the craving for food and sweets, thereby reducing the intake of fats and carbohydrates. Brings about effective utilization of glucose in the body, which has a role to play in fat accumulation in the body.

INDICATIONS: Weight loss Maintaining normal lipid levels Inhibiting craving for sugar

AYURSLIM USE DIRECTIONS Ayurslim is available in pack size of 60 Veg caps, and the recommended dosage is 2 capsule, twice a day after breakfast and dinner, for a minimum period of 3 to 6 months. AyurSlim should be taken in conjunction with a reduced kilojoule diet and moderate amounts of exercise on a daily basis.

Planting a garden is symbolic of new growth and a perfect way to set new beginnings in motion for a new year

Plant Power

Resolve to spend more time gardening and reap the benefits of creating a garden retreat offering hours of health benefits, joy and interest. It’s almost guaranteed that once you begin, you’ll find yourself rushing home to see how your seedlings are doing, if the birds have eaten your latest offering or if your compost is ready to spread yet.

did you know? According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, gardening can benefit people recovering from illness by retraining their muscles and improving strength, coordination and balance.

P

lanting a garden is symbolic of new growth and a perfect way to set new beginnings in motion for a new year. While planting, think of the magic and mystery of plants, their display of vital energy and the beauty demonstrated by flowers blooming. Ascribe similar attributes and intentions to your new year as you set up a mental blueprint for a successful year of enchantment and growth. Just as in nature plants die and are reborn, so do many aspects of our lives. We shed things we no longer need and are regenerated with a new spirit, attitudes and lust for life.

everything you need to live life well

Gardening offers the opportunity to think about life and creation; it is spiritually healing and besides, can give you a great work-out.

Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace. – May Sarton

did you know? Previously scientists believed it was the green spaces that gave people tremendous healing and relaxation value from nature. Author Matthew Silverstone has now proven scientifically that it is the vibrational properties of trees and plants that give us the health benefits. When hugging a tree, its different vibrational pattern will affect various biological behaviours within your body.

PLANT WISDOM The Victorian’s placed a lot of importance on the meaning of certain flowers – still to this day, red roses are linked to romance, while pink roses indicate friendship. Many of the meanings have been lost in history. Something as simple as a small bunch of daisies could speak volumes at a time when conversation was severely limited by social mores. Dr Edward Bach developed his flower remedies over 80 years ago, tapping in to the innate energy of different plants to address numerous physical and emotional maladies. So, too, aromatherapy looks to the wisdom of plants for healing oils. Use flowers to moderate your feelings. Plant varieties you relate to.

FLOWER FEELINGS Violet ATTRIBUTES: Faithfulness FLOWER REMEDIES: Pride & aloofness (water violet)

RELATE TO THE SEASON Nature offers myriad examples of the true joy of reality. Each season has its use, all geared toward sustainability, growth and forward movement. Even winter, with its dormancy is essential to give seeds and soil an opportunity to rest and generate new energy from the hard work of growth. Most people feel great joy and hope when spring arrives – there’s a lightness and energy in the air that lifts the spirit. Just as the seasons move from one state to the next, so too does your life. As you spend time in your garden, watching new buds spring to life and older plants grow steadily, consider your own seasons. What type of season are you in right now and how is it serving you? Which season will you enter into next and how can you fully experience every aspect of the moment? Acknowledge and be grateful for each season you live through – nature doesn’t try to change the character of her seasons – winter doesn’t strive to be less cold. Seasons are simply what they are, and for good reason. Take your cue from nature and strive to be simply what you are – this honesty helps you to tap in to your greatest spiritual power.

BACKYARD GYM

Get garden fit – consider swapping your gym card in favour of a garden shop loyalty card. While gardening is generally regarded as moderate exercise, there are some ways you can up your activity and get fit while doing something gloriously refreshing and rewarding. Digging, for example, will help to tone and exercise your thighs, arms, stomach and back.

MOVEMENT TIP BREATHE IN AS YOU BEND TO DIG AND BREATHE OUT AS YOU ACTIVATE THE STRENUOUS PART OF DIGGING – THIS WILL NOT ONLY ASSIST IN STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE, BUT WILL ALSO PROTECT YOU FROM BACK STRAIN

Mowing the lawn is a great activity for arms and stomach and is similar to walking on a treadmill. Raking is akin to using a rowing machine and turning compost is comparable to lifting weights. British physiotherapist and Pilates teacher, Dr Jenny Hawke, suggests warming up before you begin your backyard workout by walking around your garden a few times and if you have stiff joints, do a few tip-toe raises and 10 or so gentle squats. She also recommends varying your activity; for example, begin with 10 minutes of pruning, then 10-15 minutes of weeding, followed by 10-15 minutes of digging before repeating the cycle.

FLOWER REMEDIES: Finding common ground AROMATHERAPY: Soothes the spirit

Lavender ATTRIBUTES: Trust FLOWER REMEDIES: Moderates spiritual energy AROMATHERAPY: Stress reduction

INDOOR GARDEN While being outside has huge mental, spiritual and physical benefits, you may also want to spread some of that magic inside your home. All plants grown indoors will move towards their light source, so remember to rotate your pots regularly to keep the plants straight and healthy. Harvest them regularly so they don’t outgrow their casing.

HANGING PLANTS Plants in hanging baskets need to drain, and will need a catchment tray below them. Line the bottom of the basket with cotton wool to combat too much dripping.

INDOOR EDIBLES: chives, oregano, mint, thyme, sage, basil, rosemary INDOOR BEAUTIES: orchids, violets, peace lilies, begonias and bonsais HANGING EDIBLES: strawberries, peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes HANGING BEAUTIES: petunias, impatiens, geraniums, ivy and morning glory

WINDOW BOXES

WINDOW EDIBLES: herbs, lettuce, onions, spinach and radish

Use window boxes to green your apartment, but can be very heavy once filled with soil. Secure them well. Any relatively short rooted plant will grow well in a window box.

WINDOW BEAUTIES: nasturtiums, petunias, impatiens, violets, and marigolds.

Use a mixture of flowers and herbs for indoor greening.

Just as you learn the rhythms and moods of any partner, you will learn to read the signs of mood changes in a bipolar partner.

The other side of

BIPOLAR

While much has been written and explored about the ravages of Bipolar and there are numerous face-to-face or web-based support groups for those suffering from this mood disorder, there aren’t many resources available for the people who live with and care for Bipolar sufferers.

ith any illness, to effectively manage it, understanding the ins and outs – or highs and lows – is the first, essential step. With Bipolar, a mood disorder characterised by extreme depression and extreme mania, understanding its intricacies is even more important because it is sometimes difficult to separate the disorder from the person.

A LEARNING CURVE Once you’ve understood the clinical aspects of Bipolar, you can begin to explore how it affects your Bipolar loved one. As with anything, everyone is unique, and while the underlying brain chemistry may be the same, how the disorder manifests will be unique. Most people have a good grasp of what depression is. The few who don’t should count themselves fortunate. However, it’s quite common to experience a period of time, or even a day, when everything looks completely bleak, no matter the circumstances. With Bipolar, lows can seem to occur quite out of the blue, with little or no circumstantial reasons – in fact, a Bipolar low will completely disregard what would normally lift a person’s mood; for example, winning the lottery or becoming a parent for the first time. This is where it begins to be difficult to understand the disorder and where acceptance must be sought. Telling a person who is clinically depressed to buck up or trying to cheer them up by telling them they’re well loved or fortunate simply isn’t going to cut it. The highs, however, are hardest to understand. As with depression, mania follows no circumstance – for instance, the death of a parent or child during a manic period won’t cause a low. In fact the term ‘high’ isn’t adequate as it sounds quite positive – mania is a better description. Typically, mania is characterised by racing thoughts; extreme behaviour, from overspending to becoming highly sexualised – risky behaviour; and not requiring much sleep. Most bipolar sufferers will tell you they’re at their peak in the period before mania hits – their minds are clear, creative thought peaks, they feel physically well and robust and self esteem is perfectly balanced. They’re generally a lot of fun to be with during that phase, but unfortunately the highs continue to climb and once mania sets in it can be devastating for any relationship. Mania is also a very dangerous period in terms of suicide risk. You’d think that the extreme lows would be more

conducive to suicide, but there is such a dulling of thought processes and energy, that it becomes difficult to formulate a suicide plan during that time.

COPING MECHANISMS While many famous people have been diagnosed with Bipolar and it’s eminently possible to live a successful and fulfilling life with the disorder, people who are close to them do suffer consequences that can drive them away. The following tips can help you to ensure you manage to remain in a loving and beneficial relationship with a Bipolar sufferer.

Love – live by the mantra that ‘the more unlovable a person is, the more they need to be loved’. This will help you love through the tough times and remind you that it’s the Bipolar speaking, not your loved one. Awareness – just as you learn the rhythms and moods of any partner, you will learn to read the signs of mood changes in your partner or loved one. Be aware of what these little shifts mean. For example, some Bipolar people begin to become selffocused when they are going into a manic phase; so listening for the use of the word ‘I’ where they would normally say ‘we’ may tip you off. Sleeping less is a sign of mania and sleeping more a sign of depression. Self-medication – drug and alcohol abuse is very common among Bipolar sufferers and it’s down to self medication. While they might not consciously be aware that their mood is shifting, their brain certainly is. Just as a craving for potato chips may signal a need for potassium in your body, so alcohol or drugs could signal a need to dull the senses and slow the brain down. So, if your loved one is drinking more than usual, that’s also a sign they may be heading for a manic swing.

Code words –

when either a high or low extreme is occurring, logical conversation isn’t easy. It’s wise then to talk about the different mood states when your loved one is stable and come up with phrases or codes that work for you both – with the understanding that if you say one, they will understand what you mean. For example, merely telling your loved one that you think they’re getting ill will allow you to take measures against it. These measures could mean a visit to your psychiatrist to adjust any medication, a period of rest, a change in diet and so on. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Be patient – while a healthy diet, exercise and adequate sleep have been shown to improve Bipolar ups and downs, the very nature of the disorder means that being sensible isn’t actually easy. It’s a disorder of extremes, so lows will see your loved one with too little energy to even think, let alone exercise; while the highs will see them feeling invincible and therefore won’t believe they need to live a healthy life. Don’t give up on that, however, and encourage them to live as healthily as possible at all times, with special emphasis when they are stable in the hope that all the healthy living between the mood extremes will reduce the number and intensity of mood swings. Take control –

because one of the common characteristics of mania is overspending, agree with your partner that you will control the finances. This will help you to ensure financial security during manic phases. But this is not to say you need to keep your loved one on a shoe-string budget, just set up a method where you both need to agree on expenditure before it happens.

Develop a thick skin –

during lows, it’s common for Bipolar people to push their loved ones away and this is because they often feel as if they are fading away and its actually an act of love – protecting you from hurting when they do eventually die. Ignoring you, being sullen or showing slight interest in any aspect of your life isn’t a reflection of how little they love you, but how much. Learn to see through those times.

did you know?

A report in the Journal of Affective Disorders highlights the positive aspects of bipolar (spirituality, empathy, creativity, realism and resilience) and suggests that treatment would be more effective if these positive traits are encouraged. Johns Hopkins University Professor of Psychiatry, Kay Redfield Jameson, known for her poignant and honest biography’ An Unquiet Mind’ about the effects of bipolar, encourages doctors to minimise medication as much as feasible to ensure that the inherent creativity of bipolar isn’t dampened.

ow is the perfect time of year to break free from old limiting beliefs about ourselves. Life challenges us to stand in our power, speak our truth and act according to our highest vision of ourselves, but very often we shy away from opportunities that would give us a chance to shine. Almost every person on earth is blessed with talents and capabilities that allow them to live the life they were designed to live, but for most of us there is an invisible ‘something’ standing in our way. At first we might look around us to try and find what’s to blame for us not living our best lives. We scrutinize our partners, pick faults with our parents and endure unsatisfying working lives because we are oblivious to our greatness. We are constantly compromising who we are in order to keep the wheels of life turning, falsely believing that we have no choice but to stick to the path we’ve chosen and make it work. We are prone to keeping it all together, to carrying our burdens with a smile while we follow someone else’s idea of what our lives should be. Oh, we don’t admit to that. We bury our deep longing for greatness and convince ourselves we are doing the right thing. We keep asking ourselves, “Should I be doing this or that?” or “Should I think this or that?” We have lost touch with the inner guidance system that allows us to trust ourselves completely, the one that will lead us to the greatest version of ourselves. I spent four years married to a man who suffered from Bipolar Disorder and the emotional turmoil and constant fear reduced me to a shriveled, powerless version of myself. I did everything I could to build a positive life under very dark circumstances. Along the way I retreated into myself and put on a brave face for the world. My parents and family had no idea what I was going through and I was not going to tell them that my picture-perfect life with my new husband was unraveling faster than I could stich it together. Eventually my emotional suffering led to physical illness and I knew I had to do something radical. I had to leave the man I loved and free us both to live our fullest lives, to become the woman I thought I was, not the over compromising waif I’d become. But where do we find the strength

to make such radical changes? How can we stand in our true power and step into the world as our authentic selves? By doing it! I spent five years learning how, during which time I journeyed half way around the world to grow back into my full stature. These are the three things that helped me along the way:

1. START LISTENING TO YOUR BODY We often retreat into our heads - where limitation and fear live. To truly break free of old patterns, we need to shift awareness from our thoughts into our centre where deeper truth and wisdom lie. You have a brilliant inner guidance system but it doesn’t come from your mind, it is directed by the way you feel about certain things. All you have to do is notice when something you are doing or saying makes you feel open and light, and when you feel closed and heavy. These two simple states is all we need to help guide us to what’s true for us. Follow what makes you feel open. My body spent years feeling closed and heavy and I convinced myself I was fine because I had to make the relationship work. It made me ill and when I eventually summoned up the courage to listen to my inner voice, I heard what I feared most: that leaving my husband was the only way I could thrive.

2. FIND SOMETHING GREATER THAN YOURSELF I was plagued by guilt and shame for choosing to leave a man who repeatedly tried to kill himself. I knew it would be very difficult for him to continue without me, but at the same time I was dying inside. His illness was dragging us both down and I wasn’t strong enough for us both. Our purpose is not to live our lives for others, no matter how noble that sounds - we are meant to live it for ourselves. Having said this, it helps to choose something that will facilitate your healing process. I chose yoga. Dismiss the idea of finding strength on your own, rather find a way to listen to your inner voice and explore options that lead you to benefit from universal healing energy. These could include meditation classes, yoga, martial arts, colour, art or music therapy, self-mastery classes, sporting activities – anything that combines focused intent with physical practice.

LET JOY BE YOUR GUIDE Four years after leaving my marriage, I am living the life I always dreamed of. It has been an interesting and often challenging journey, but I made it because I followed the clues that joy revealed to me. I chose to do what made me happy, in my case yoga and travel, and it proved to be the very thing that made me whole again. Use this year to follow your own inner sunshine and allow the best you to create your authentic life.

Follow the Sun – A healing yoga journey by Sharni Quinn Heartbreak, travel and healing. Fear of loss, fear of survival and fear of the future. This is my personal story about my healing yoga journey. It is my story of being physically ill due to the emotional turmoil of going through my divorce and leaving my bipolar husband. A story of searching for hope, courage, finding myself again, and the miracles, yoga and acts of grace that assisted me along the way. It is ultimately a story of how I trusted my gut, listened to my intuition and followed my heart. This is my story of ‘Following the Sun’.”

By Gabriel Byrne

CHOOSING TO LIVE During the course of life everyone has at least one opportunity that seems to challenge them beyond their perceived ability. This is the time we realise we are capable of so much more than we can imagine. Davey du Plessis had an experience that perfectly illustrates how much resolve we are capable of conjuring up. Gabrielle Byrne spoke to Davey about his experience and his newly launched book, Choosing to Live.

thoughts & emotions

O

ne of the things Davey du Plessis is passionate about is increasing our awareness of the responsibility we have in our management, conservation and interaction with nature. He has witnessed the cruelty and destruction wrought by ignorance, greed and poverty. His compassion for life is what drives him. His experiences and insights combined with his deep respect for life led him to adopt a vegan lifestyle. To those who would question the possibility of someone leading a physically demanding life nourished exclusively on a vegan diet, look no further: Davey du Plessis’s life as a world adventurer is as physically demanding as it gets. After cycling the length of Africa he got his kayak out and headed off for a bit of paddling. A lot of paddling actually: the entire length of the Amazon River, source to sea, almost 7000 km!

Even though he was now riddled with gun shot, suffering severe internal bleeding and with a punctured heart, lung, windpipe, and carotid artery, he managed to get up and flee his assailants. As he ran he was shot a fourth time.

His delight in the glory around him was short lived when, “I suddenly felt a forceful impact slam into my back… I let out a helpless moan before I fell into the water, capsizing my kayak… I was sinking slowly, stunned as if I was floating motionless in space… I sensed myself slowly fading away in complete helplessness.” He managed to revive himself and during the time it took him to regain the surface, his kayak, and the river bank, he received two further shotgun blasts. He explains, “It was only on the third shot that I realised that I had actually been hit, although, at that time I had no idea who was shooting at me.”

Unfortunately two months into his adventure his odyssey turned into a nightmare when against all odds he survived a horrific attack in a remote part of the jungle. I met with him to chat about this powerful tale of survival which he recounts in his recently published book, Choosing To Live. I was immediately impressed by his quiet self-possession, by his humility, determination and passion for life. His unbounded love for nature is evident, “The vegetation was incredibly dense, creating a solid wall of green leaves and thick brown trunks… the parakeets squawking their uncensored greetings, the buzzing of giant cicadas, and a whole host of other birds and insects singing their morning calls, all formed a beautiful natural symphony that filled the humid morning air… This was the Amazon Jungle! This is what I had envisioned and had come here to experience.”

Collapsing on the muddy river bank he felt himself collapse internally too. He vividly describes his drift towards death. “Negativity, the enemy to my existence, pushed and pulled until it reached a saturation point and I concluded that death no longer seemed such a miserable option. I started to embrace and welcome death, acknowledging the reality that being dead was better than trying to figure out what to do or… face the impossible task of finding my way out of the jungle.”

At this point his true descent into an almost surreal nightmare began, and would continue for almost two days until he finally reached a hospital and received medical attention. During this time he would meet the various faces of humanity. Although he remembers the cold ruthlessness of doctors who refused treatment without upfront payment, he also remembers the heartrending compassion he received from an old Indian lady who washed the blood from his legs, and the strength he drew from a man who held him gently and sang to him through the darkest night of his life. Davey du Plessis gritty, gripping story has a surprising immediacy which engages from the first page. It is interspersed with passages of carefully considered personal philosophy and many wise observations on the human condition. Besides his hairraising encounters including huge spiders and an anaconda, there are several poignant anecdotes and a few unexpected moments of real hilarity. Davey highlights the importance that the mind plays in our perception of reality and how our beliefs affect our experience of life. What I mostly received from this book though was the inspiration to reflect and assess my personal impact on nature and to know that when all seems hopeless and lost, I will always find reasons to endure.

Then, “Out of the blue, I instantaneously hit a mental turning point, when it suddenly dawned on me that I had spent the last few minutes trying to justify a reason to give up living. I was denouncing my will to survive because the potential pain and fear I may experience… if I wanted to live and find a way out of this jungle, it would be my choice. I could not expect anyone to save me if I wasn’t prepared to save myself.”

“I realised it was my choice on how to perceive the entire experience. I could be angry and lose hope, or choose acceptance and remain positive and hopeful. I had sufficient real-life evidence to justify either of the choices.” www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Unlock your mind with

MIND MAPPING

Instead of making New Year resolutions that seem like rules and feel restrictive, try an alternative way of plotting your wants, hopes and needs through mind mapping.

did you know? Mind maps were popularized by Tony Buzan, British psychology author and television personality.

W

here mostly we make lists for our lives, it’s hard to get a snapshot in list form, a visual mind map that connects everything together is much more dynamic and effective. A mind map organises your thoughts around a central theme or idea. You can mind map anything from starting a vegetable garden to finding a life partner. Mind maping is a graphic technique that helps unlock your potential brain power. It also gives you complete freedom to dream your dreams. Whenever I have a project or need to bring my life back under control, I mind map – it

46

everything you need to live life well

works so well and puts life into perspective. You will need is a note book and some coloured pens. I recommend keeping a dedicated notebook especially for mind maps. You can use a blank piece of paper but it’s great to have them all together in one place so you can refer to them when needed. Some people like making them into a vision board, it’s entirely up to you. By doing a mind map you are reinforcing positive messages to your brain about what you need or want to do with your life. The practice also allows your brain to expand and explore new territory.

MATERIALS NEEDED COLOURED PENCILS OR FELT PENS BLANK PAPER OR A NOTE BOOK UNINTERRUPTED TIME YOUR BRAIN IMAGINATION

Mind map at least once a week - every day is even better. It leads to a much more productive life and will make you achieve your goals more successfully. The beautiful thing about mind maps is it allows you to dream big and through that you can more freely unlock the potential you need to achieve those dreams.

Getting Started: Step 1 Start in the center of the page. Draw a picture or write a phrase describing your theme or thought. Images are great, they have a powerful impact on the mind. Start in the centre so you can expand in any direction. This is what you want your life to be expansive.

Step 2 Use the coloured pens to make it more fun and to keep your mind on alert

Step 3 From your central concept branch out with all the other thoughts or themes that come to mind. Flush out everything that comes to mind. Basically you are dumping your thoughts onto your mind map. Connect all your branches together, this gives your brain thecorrect associations and by connecting the branches you will remember and understand your mind map

Step 4 Try and use images throughout as they will be worth a thousand words. Once you get started this becomes a way of life. Teach your children, it will help them with their school work, exams and particularly with their homework. Here are some suggestions to kick off a year of mind mapping: a. Career b. Health c. The pursuit of your best, most adventurous life, one that is lived well above expectations is all about having fun, taking risks and being awesome. Anne Bolender

Manifest your DREAM HOLIDAY Everyone has a ‘dream holiday’ or dream life somewhere on their bucket list. For many, the dream holiday always remains in the category of dream and never materializes. Changing the way your perceive your goals, and creating new thought patterns around what you want can activate ‘manifestation’ energy and make beautiful things happen. Use these six principles to get you started.

48

everything you need to live life well

livewell journey

1. The first thing you have to determine and think about in more detail is whether what you think you want to do, is something you really want. This sounds a bit strange but some things in thought are better than in practice. Most people will say they want to live on an island and live a barefoot life with no stress. But perhaps you are someone that thrives on stress and you would feel unfulfilled living in paradise. Your dream holiday might be sailing around the world on a yacht but in reality, can you really live in a tiny space where you can’t go for walks, won’t see any greenery and have to get on very well with the people you travel with. 2. Once you have tested your dream to see if it works as reality you need to describe it in a fairly specific way. You need to know with some detail what you are manifesting. If it’s walking through the desert, name which desert you want to walk through, what it looks and feels like how long it will take. Put down as much detail as you can. 3. Find any limitations or fears that may be blocking you. Everyone has self talk that says limiting things. See what yours is saying, “You don’t deserve it”, “You aren’t brave enough”, “it costs too much money” are some familiar one’s. Use positive statements or affirmations to negate these protestations. See if you have any guilt about living out a fabulous dream and find a way to get rid of it. 4. Use the concept of thought as a force of creation. Abundance teachers have illustrated that our thoughts create our reality. Everything we think get recorded in our subconscious as an instruction to play out in our lives. If you are thinking in a negative sense, that’s exactly what you will create in your life. Thoughts are habitual so you need to apply a certain amount of attention and effort to change them to one’s you want. Thoughts about money are particularly loaded, it seems we are polluted with beliefs about scarcity. You may have beliefs about your ability or sense of entitlement you aren’t even aware of.

5. Use feeling to make your dream more vivid and real. Actively invite the type of feeling you have when knowing you are going to achieve your goal. Feel delight, joy, happiness, expansiveness, excitement and whatever else it makes you feel. Walk around with those feelings at the same time as knowing your life is going to change in the way you want it to. 6. More than thinking or wishing, use the more definite energy of knowing it is going to happen. Make it visible by drawing or collecting images that make up a picture of your dream. Paste this up in the form of a vision board somewhere you will see if frequently. In short, embody what it is you want. See how quickly it will happen. You can use this principle for anything you want to see happen in your life.

did you know? You can change the way you think in a way that changes your experience of life. Every time you think negative thoughts, turn them around and think the opposite. This is especially effective when it comes to money. For exam ple, if you see yourself thinking something like “I never have enough money” switchthis to “I always have more than enough money”. Or if you think “I am always so deeply in debt” switchit to “Wow, how amazing that I managed to pay off that debt so quickly” These new thoughts don’t have to be true for your energy and perceptions to begin to shift. Your thoughts will make them become so.

Moving should be pleasurable. If you do not feel it, tweak the move until you find pleasure and comfort.

Listen to your body

By Lizelle Steyn

With the start of a new year, many of us resolve to exercise more, even if we don’t enjoy it. “No pain, no gain”, they say. But is this true? Absolutely not, according to thousands across the world who do Nia for physical and mental health. It is all about the joy of movement.

did you know? In a Nia class you often shimmy or shake your body, which stimulates the production of collagen, increasing skin elasticity. It also gives bones the elastic quality that improves fracture resistance.

“It feels so good. I had no idea that exercise could be so much fun – and funny.” “Nia keeps my depression under control.” “This is the perfect exercise for my stiff ‘desk’ body.” “Nia is the highlight of my week.”

T

hese Nia students have discovered the pleasure of moving to music without worrying about being right or wrong. The enjoyment factor makes it impossible for them to go back to conventional, repetitive training.

50

everything you need to live life well

During the early eighties, aerobics instructors Debbie Rosas and Carlos Aya Rosas were concerned with the growing number of injuries among their students. They set out to develop an exercise form that would honour the body’s natural way of moving. Debbie and Carlos started training under martial art masters, who encouraged them to stop ‘working out’, and rather ‘work in’, finely attuning themselves to what the body needs. To bring the fun element into routines, Carlos started taking Jazz and modern dance classes. Yoga and other healing arts soon followed and Nia was born, a fusion between different movement forms so invigorating yet grounded, it encouraged them to take off their shoes and start the barefoot journey to healing and fitness.

movewell

fitness, sleep & massage

What to expect Nia classes can be found across South Africa. Sessions start with a gentle warmup then build up to an energetic high, and end with a thorough cool-down and selfhealing floor play. Students are encouraged to sense which parts of their bodies need more of a stretch, rotation, or perhaps a floor massage (great for the lower back). While the teacher provides suggested choreography for most of the songs, there are also opportunities for students to just surrender to the music and free dance. All classes are done to music to stimulate the central nervous system. In a sense, a Nia class has three ‘instructors’, the student’s body, the teacher and the music. Watching from the outside, a Nia class hardly resembles synchronized swimming. Some students will be following the teacher; some may be adjusting the moves to nurture a knee or back injury; others may be losing themselves in the music and dancing with their eyes closed. Teachers constantly remind students to first pay attention to what their own bodies are telling them before trying to copy the teacher. Students may be hearing something completely different in the music than the teacher, prompting them to slow down the choreographed moves and move in their own natural time.

Choose your level There are no beginner or advanced classes. Instead, teachers demonstrate three intensity levels of the same move. For example, a bow stance (Nia for ‘lunge’) at Level 1 would be just a slight bend of the knees, whereas a bow stance at Level 3 could mean droppingthe back knee to the floor. Students are reminded to choose

the right level for them for that moment by asking, “If my knees could speak, what would they be telling me now?”

Nia is for everybody

Your body is all the weight you need

• •

No weights are used other than students’ own body weight. Floor time is used not only for self-healing, but also to build strength, for example by pushing up from the floor into a plank position or a downward-facing dog pose. Strength is further built through explosive martial art movements, like punches, blocks, strikes, chops and kicks.

Using the body to move the mind Movement triggers memory. For example, if someone who was physically abused and hit in the stomach, moves in a way that resembles the protective action of blocking a blow to the body, that trauma memory is often relived. Nia uses the body to heal the mind and spirit by connecting muscular movements with introspection, intention, visualization and a rewiring of the brain, if needed. Nia practitioners become more assertive with the continued use of martial arts and an audible ‘yes’ or ‘no’ accompanying a strike or block action. Using the body to strengthen the mind also works brilliantly for memory retention. Britta von Tagen, Nia black belt and child educator, for example asks the children in her care to act out animal traits to embed the facts about the particular animals. She also finds children become better at mathematics if they ‘walk’ the numbers in class. While many lifestyle practices use the mind to guide the body, Nia is unusual in its emphasis on using the body to guide the mind and spirit.

Lizelle teaches at The Gym@ Old Mutual. You can email her at lizelle.steyn@gmail.com or visit niasouthafrica.co.za for information on the class closest to you.

A SIMPLE NIA EXERCISE

sensing the 13 joints

Your body has several hundred joints. To keep things simple, Nia focuses on the following only: • • • • • • •

The ankles The knees The hip joints The wrists The elbows The shoulder joints The spine

Bend and extend the lower legs and forearms to feel the knee and elbow (hinge) joints. Bend to both your sides with the spine, and to the front and back. Also twist the torso to the left and to the right. The rest of the joints can be circled. Which joints feel too tight? Which feel painful? Can you adjust your movement to feel less pain, e.g. reverse the rotation of your shoulder joint? With persistent, gentle daily joint movements, you should soon feel increased mobility in your joints.

Growing into the Future

It’s a great responsibility being a parent – not only because of the physical aspects of caring for a child, but also the emotional and behavioural influences you inadvertently yield.

did you know? According to the World Health Organization, research shows that many challenges in adult society – mental health problems, obesity, heart disease, criminality, competence in literacy and numeracy - have their roots in early childhood. Economists assert on the basis of the available evidence that investment in early childhood is the most powerful investment a country can make, with returns over the life course many times the amount of the original investment. 54

O

f course you want to set your child up to have the very best opportunities life has on offer. You want to nurture their strengths, build up their weaknesses and fill their hearts with love. While parenting and nurture may be instinctual, many of our parenting practises and subtleties of care are layered by our own past experiences – sometimes good and sometimes not. We input what we know – either we decide not to do something that was done to us, or we repeat our experiences. Those decisions come from our own emotional experiences and perceptions.

A SENSE OF SELF A key area of success and positivity is a good self-esteem. Understanding who you are in the context of the people around you is fundamental to feeling confident. New York based National Centre for Learning Disabilities sates that self-esteem is shaped by several factors: how well children get along with peers and teachers; how they see themselves in comparison to everything you need to live life well

their peers; and how well they negotiate relationships with parents and siblings. Difficulty in any of these areas can lead to a lowered self-esteem.

But how do you get the balance right between building selfesteem but not producing a precocious child? Children need boundaries and routine. That much is abundantly clear from just about all the research done on child behaviour. The controversial tenet ‘save the rod and spoil the child’ doesn’t literally mean beating your children – certainly in today’s world it’s thought to be an unacceptable way of rearing children. However, if you view the ‘rod’ as discipline, the tenet becomes a piece of wisdom. Allowing your child to understand there are boundaries and that pushing those boundaries has consequences is essential to giving them a sense of true belonging in the world.

lovewell

eco mom & baby

Rebellion is an intrinsic part of human nature and in some sense there does need to be something to rebel against for you to find your passions. Children who have grown up with no rules, essentially parenting themselves, tend to feel lost and without a true sense of who they are.

did you know? According to Clinical Psychologist Raymond Lloyd Richards, a permissive parent who fails to discipline actually causes a child to fear punishment and associate it with irrational violence. These fears can become so strong that the child can end up engaging in violence as an unconscious plea to be punished for an unspoken sense of guilt for other acts they were never justly punished for.

HABITUAL LEADERSHIP Sean Covey, son of leadership guru Stephen Covey and motivator in his own right, outlines 8 habits of highly successful children. Encouraging these habits in your children will make sure they grow up with integrity, positivity and a well balanced self view. The following are extracts from his book The Leader in Me. Proactivity: have a ‘can do’ attitude. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I don’t blame others. I do the right thing without being asked, even if nobody is looking. Plan ahead: I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my school. I look for ways to be a good citizen. First things first: I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am organized.

Everybody wins: I want everyone to be a success. I don’t have to put others down to get what I want. It makes me happy to see other people happy. I like to do nice things for others. When a conflict arrives, I help brainstorm a solution. We all can win. Understanding: I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. Learn: I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different from me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems. I know that ‘two heads are better than one’. I am a better person when I let other people into my life and work. Care: I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places.

BEHAVIOUR VS CHARACTER Making the distinction between loving a child and not liking their behaviour is as important to parents as it is to the child. Refer to the behaviour when berating a child, e.g rather than calling them naughty, describe the activity as naughty. That way the child will know he or she is still loved even if their behaviour is disapproved of. See the difference between wilful behaviour and simple mistakes. A glass thrown on the floor or mistakenly dropped on the floor is evidence of two very different behaviours, and yet the result, a broken glass, is the same. An appropriate reaction will make a huge difference in the way your child thinks.

did you know? Research shows that 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or don’t measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

TALK ABOUT IT Non-verbal communication needs to be seen as just as important as verbal. Your body language and actions speak louder than words. Of course talking and especially listening to kids is essential but more importantly is making sure your verbal communication matches your non verbal communication. Saying ‘that’s lovely’ or ‘well done’ when shown a painting done by your child is important – but if you say so while watching TV or doing something else, the words won’t infiltrate – your actions will. Recent focus on ‘attachment deficit disorder’ shows how devastating it can be. Attachment meaning the bonding process that happens between a child and caregiver during the first few years of the child’s life – basically, when a child expresses a need, such as by crying for food, the caregiver attends to that need. Through this process, the child learns the world is a safe place and so develops trust. The child forms emotional connections and feels empowered by his or her environment, developing a secure base to explore the world. When this attachment is absent, children lack the ability to form and maintain intimate and loving relationships, and grow up with an inability to trust the world as safe and trust that others will take care of them. When this happens, a child will feel he or she has to be hypervigilant about their own safety. This prevents them from properly receiving love and nurturing from others. While much is said about physical, emotional and sexual abuse, a seemingly simple thing like lack of attention can be devastating to a child’s growth and future. During your parenting journey spend good quality time effectively communicating with your child, make eye contact and pay full attention to their needs and wants and even their chatter about their daily lives.

When kids start getting niggly, change their mood by getting them to laugh. Paediatrician Harvey Karp says kids love knowing the answer. They also love knowing you are wrong. Things like looking for a cup that’s already in your hand will set them off. Looking to them to tell you where something is, or how to do something is also a way of engaging with them in a playful way. Be careful though not to make light of something that has upset them. In this situation they need to be taken seriously.

Make dreams happen By Kathy Brüggemann, editor of www.mommymatters.co.za

A

s we sit on the brink of a brand new year, we’re all thinking about what changes we’re going to make. What we’re going to achieve this year, goal setting, vision boards, soul coaching – some of us do it all, and often forget to assist our children in the same direction. As parents, we have more control over whether our children achieve their dreams than we might think. We forget we’re more often than not the only tools they have to prompt and guide them to set goals and dreams for their futures, and we have a responsibility to do so. Here are a few guidelines when taking this journey with them:

These are their dreams “What do you want to be when you grow up?” – A question we’ve all asked our little ones. “A Teacher”, “A pilot”, “A Fireman”, “A Builder” they respond, and how often are we tempted to intercept with “but don’t you want to be a doctor/ engineer/ *insert your dream here*?” Don’t deny them their dreams. Chances are it will change a few times depending on that day’s theme at school or what the best friend that week’s cool dad does for a living. But by getting in the way of their dreams, we lead them to believe their dreams aren’t good enough. This creates a situation where they strive to live up to our expectations rather than following their hearts and passions.

Set a good example Are you a product of your parent’s dreams and expectations or have you followed your own path in building your career? I’m so often in discussion with parents who make choices for the sake of their children and in doing so, deny themselves happiness. They are often convinced of the duty of parenting. Are we setting a good example for our children who closely witness that behaviour? Are we setting them up for making choices based on others and neglecting their own happiness, because that’s what we’ve done? They are proud of what we do and they use our accomplishments, and means of achieving them, as a standard. Make sure you are true to your own goals and visions, and your children will mimic that in their lives.

Help them take action A dream or goal could be about a toy they want to save for, or the grades they want to achieve this year. Have them write down their dream. This creates a tangible intention and helps them stay accountable to it. The more they learn about their dream, the more realistic it becomes. Help them with research and getting the information they need to turn their vision into reality. Setting a date for achievement of a goal and a plan of action will also help keep them focused. Most importantly, show your support, and your children can do or be whatever they dream…

MAKE A VISION BOARD What is your vision for 2014?

W

hen we become mindful of the ways in which our conscious and unconscious thoughts and beliefs influence our reality, life can become a creative adventure. Making a Vision Board is one way of putting this into practice.

Why teach this to children? Children are often taught about the importance of setting goals and taking the necessary steps to achieve them. There is an element of this with Vision Boards, but there is also a lot more. It’s about teaching children that they have a creative power within them and that the world is a canvas of abundant potential. The Earthchild Project has been teaching this to thousands of children over the past

58

seven years. Working in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill, these lessons are particularly valuable as many of these children have never been encouraged to create a vision for their future. How can they co-create change without the belief in their own power to do so? Vision Boards are a way we invite them to dream into a future for themselves and their communities. And now for 2014, we extend the invitation to you too…

How to make a Vision Board? First, take some time to connect to a still space within. Now imagine into a vision for yourself and the life you would like to create. Allow yourself to dream, to feel, to fill in the details. Once your vision is clear, put it down on paper - use present everything you need to live life well

tense, affirmative words, use colour, use images. Put your Vision Board up where you’ll be reminded of it regularly or tuck it away somewhere safe. Then the final and essential step is to surrender to the unfolding of your adventure (please note – a spoonful of trust and patience may be required!).

gluten free flapjack premix Gluten free flapjacks to bring back the nostalgia of Granny's cooking Remember when Granny used to make flajacks, the warming aroma coming from the kitchen, the anticipation of wonderful hot comfort food straight off the pan, how they were soft and spongy and the syrup melted on them and drizzled off the sides. Things were different then, somehow everyone ate puddings and confectionary every day and didn’t get fat. There was enough time to mix flour and butter and everything together, the pantry was always full. Now we are much more rushed, we don’t have time to bake and health and nutrition is much more important. Yet, the comfort value of home baked foods hasn’t lost its nurturing and heart warming appeal. We realise the value of sitting around a table with loved ones and sharing a delicious treat. That’s why our gluten free premix flapjacks are the perfect solution. Save time, don’t worry about all the different ingredients, don’t even worry about the health aspect, everything has been thought out for you.

Those who recall past lives are often unsure whether the memories are an actual historical event as a result of reincarnation or a construction of information and images held in the subconscious.

Past Life REGRESSION

Going into a deep contemplative state to access a possible past life might seem a little crazy. Certainly it elicits a lot of skepticism and doubt from most. Many people however, get an immense amount of clarity from this practice and walk away feeling enriched.

did you know? There are many strange instances where regression has revealed people knowing about events and circumstances they wouldn’t ordinarily have knowledge of. There are even cases of xenoglossy where people fluently speak a language they previously had no knowledge of.

60

A

s past life coach Emma Hamel says,

“You don’t have to believe in reincarnation or past lives, you could have an experience with your higher self or unconscious that brings images into play that tell you something you need to know. It can be simply a way of understanding something about yourself or could give you a piece of a puzzle that seems to be missing.” everything you need to live life well

4 key experiences that might point to past life memories >

eco mom & baby

I went on a journey with Emma to see what it’s all about. To begin with Emma asks interesting questions to allow the mind to open up to the practice. “Do you have an affinity with a particular country, or event in history?” she asked. “What food do you love?” Is there a language or time period you feel you relate to? Is there anything you feel scared of or have an unusual reaction to? These thought provoking questions bring the mind’s attention as to why we feel strongly about certain things and give fertile ground to play with before the session. Perhaps these affinities, unfounded fears or fascinations are remnants of a previous life and will trigger a past life memory. Emma then led me on a journey of visualisation. We started off in the most peaceful place I could conjure up in my imagination. I was asked to bring a guide with me, someone I trust or feel spiritually affiliated to. She led me down lots of steps and through a tunnel into a past life. When I stepped out of the tunnel she asked me what I was wearing on my feet. I was barefoot. Where was I? I was in the desert. What clothing was I wearing? Who was there, what were they doing? How did I feel? At one point she asked me what century I was in. “I don’t know,” I replied. “If you had to know, what would it be?” This ‘trick’ question immediately gave me an answer. The exercise went on for what I thought was about ten minutes; in actual time it was fifty minutes. To my surprise there was a complete clear picture with people and feelings and relationships. There was a mission and a purpose that was informative and helpful in my current life. Whether it was real or imagined, the experience was intriguing, had a strange sense of completeness and felt valuable to me. Emma was an amazing facilitator with an incredible way of leading and helping to interpret the experience. Past life regression is one of the most fascinating areas of unexplained human phenomena. To date, science has been unable to prove or disprove whether it is real or not. Those who recall past lives are often unsure whether the memories are an actual historical event as a result of reincarnation or a construction of information and images held in the subconscious. Either way it is filled with intrigue and has been known to help people explain apparently unfounded or strange feelings or emotions in their lives. Dr. Weiss, wrote a book called “Many Lives, Many Masters” which sold more than

a million copies but was received with great skepticism by the medical establishment. In the book he details work he did with a patient he calls Catherine. Under hypnosis Catherine remembered multiple past lives and these memories helped her get relief from paralysing phobias. Some explain past-life regression as tapping into a collective unconsciousness. Others believe it can be explained by theories in physics that have more than the three dimensions of length, width and height but rather include 11 dimensions. Dr. Oz, in a discussion with Dr. Weiss says: “Imagine that existence is really a series of shower curtains, each of which is a dimension, and sometimes those dimensions just ever so daintily touch and when they touch, weird things happen.” There have been discussions of memories coming from our DNA strands. Perhaps there are hereditary memories stored there, or insights into events our species has collected.

Dr Brian Weiss, identifies four key experiences that might point to past life memories.

be proficient in a language, a subject or profession without any effort. It could also be a fascination with certain historical times and events.

4. Strong feeling of knowing someone Dr. Weiss believes we commonly travel through different lives with the same group of souls, he calls these groupings soul mates, soul companions or soul families. We seem to learn our spiritual lessons and accumulate or resolve our karma with our soul groups. Relationships may change from life to life, but the souls are the same. In this sense we never lose our loved ones, because we are always being reunited either on the other side or back here in physical bodies.

If you would like to experience a Past Life Regression or want more information contact Emma Hamel on Email: emma@time2beme.co.za or log on to website: www.time2beme.co.za

1. Old, Familiar Feelings One of the most common signs of a past life is déjà vu—the sensation of having met a person before or visited a place previously. Sometimes, this déjà vu feeling is a sign of a past life with a particular person or in a specific place.

2. Vividly realistic dreams Vivid detailed dreams from different times and places may be a past life memory emerging. Dr. Weiss says pastlife recollections aren’t always actual memories: they may also contain symbols and metaphors that need to be interpreted so their meaning and message can become clear. These symbols are no less powerful than literal ones. He says, “Think of these past-life scenes more as a poem than a history text.”

3. Brilliance in a specific subject or skill Talents and abilities, likes and dislikes, and attractions and aversions can also be clues. You might have an affinity to certain people or cultures, even if foreign to you. You could www.wellnesswarehouse.com

When our life force energy is at a high we feel happy and healthy when it is low we are likely to succumb to sickness or stress.

Healing intentions

Starting a New Year can be treated as a very significant event. It is an opportunity to bring change, hope and positive energy into a new cycle of life.

did you know? Reiki comes from a Japanese word the first part ‘Rei’ meaning ‘God’s Wisdom’ or ‘Higher Power’ and the second being Life Force Energy. We can think of it as spiritually guided life force energy.

62

I

t is a great time for clearing away old problems, starting afresh and inviting a new way of being. There are many practices, rituals and ways we can commemorate this event. Besides having a party or popping open some champagne a visit to a healing centre can be deeply moving and a perfect way to invite the kind of year you want in a truly intentional way. We sent a journalist to try out Charmaine Haig’s ‘My Urban Retreat’ in De Waterkant– it proved to be an unforgettable experience of renewal, clarity and healing. This is her report.

everything you need to live life well

Being in a healing situation is very personal and can make you feel vulnerable, so for me, it’s very important to choose a healer you feel comfortable with. I felt entirely reassured when I met Charmaine - she has such peaceful energy and compassion. Besides that, she has a wealth of healing experience and knowledge and easily facilitates a trusting space for emotional release where one might feel vulnerable. Charmaine left an incredibly demanding career and after a near burn out chose a new career in the healing arts. After passionately studying Reiki for several years at Master Level she realised the dire need for people to have a place they can retreat to for peace

thoughts & emotions

of mind and recuperation. Determined to create a space away from the rigours of the outside world, she created a beautiful space easily accessible in the city that provides a safe sanctuary and has huge recuperative energy. As Charmaine says,

“a gym for the mind and soul.” Daily life can be overwhelming, simply driving in traffic, being subjected to depressing news headlines, answering numerous phone calls and dealing with day to day pressures is enough to topple anyone. A successful and happy life needs a daily period of calm and introspection to rebalance and recharge the mind and body. Soft lighting, gentle transformational music, candles, calming fragrance and beautiful décor is all used to maximum effect at My Urban Retreat. The 4-storey day retreat is set in one of the elegant Georgian houses in colourful Loader street. Once inside you feel a million miles away from the outside world. Although there are many different treatments, workshops and practices available including weekly meditation classes, breath and chakra work, massage and much more, Charmaine recommended a Reiki treatment using Master Energy with chakra balancing. She works with crystals placed on the body to magnify the harmonising effects. Before we began Charmaine recommended I set an intention for the healing experience, it could be to help a specific ailment, an emotional issue or simply to feel regenerated or to bring a sense of balance and clarity. Asking for what you want opens the participant to receive the energy optimally. Reiki is a technique originating from Japan for stress reduction, healing and relaxation. It uses ‘life force energy’ explained as the energy that flows through us and causes us to feel alive. When our life force energy is at a high we feel happy and healthy when it is low we are likely to succumb to sickness or stress. When Charmaine started it felt like a wonderful, glowing radiance settling over me – like a sacred presence of charged energy both wholesome and nourishing. Reiki treats individuals on many levels including the emotions, the body, mind and spirit. People experiencing Reiki have reported hugely beneficial effects that include deep relaxation, a feeling of internal

balance, groundedness, security and a sense of overall wellbeing. Reiki works by putting back displaced energy in the body through the chakra system although the body will naturally draw the energy to where it is needed most. A Reiki healer works as a catalyst in conjunction with the principle that each of us has the ability to heal ourselves. The work is done through channelling Universal energy to the chakra points. The energy does not come from the Reiki Healer themselves. There is very little contact with the body, as it mostly transfers through the practitioner - sometimes you may feel slight temperature changes or mild tingling. It motivates gentle changes by opening doors in the mind or switching on lights to enable us to see how we might be blocking or undermining the healing energies and keeping ourselves ‘stuck’ in anything from unhealthy thoughts, beliefs, actions, habits, addictions, relationships, circumstances or jobs. It offers an avenue for expressing our openness and acceptance to these healthy changes. During the session you are fully clothed on a massage bed. I went into such a deep state of relaxation I felt I had slept for 12 hours non-stop. The session lasted two hours and I wasn’t quite sure whether I fell into a deep sleep or if I was just suspended in time. Towards the end, Charmaine put crystals on my body along the chakras, I didn’t realise how much of an impact Reiki can have – I seriously felt a huge emotional shift and very deep healing. It was such a nourishing experience, I feel safe to say it was a life changing experience and I would readily recommend it to anyone. When we finished I had time to recuperate before having to get up. She had placed a little bowl of salt under the table to absorb any negative energies during the process, which I was to symbolically throw away under flowing water to represent cleansing and new beginnings. Reiki can be given over a number of sessions or you might feel that one session is enough to achieve the healing you need as it is quite potent. There are so many reasons to have Reiki and can vary from individual to individual.

THE PRINCIPLES BEHIND REIKI Reiki is transferred or ‘passed on’ to students through attunement by a professional Reiki Master. This transference allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy used to improve life circumstances, well being and wholeness for themselves or others when attuned to the higher degrees of Reiki. While Reiki is deemed spiritual, it doesn’t have a religious bias and doesn’t require the participant to have any specific beliefs. It works whether you believe in it or not. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki merely advises the practice of simple ethical ideals for peace and harmony – ideals which are universal across all belief systems. He also recommends that Reiki practitioners live in accordance with ideals that promote their own self development and improvement. It is a practice studied over time and encourages students to live with integrity and honour and the secret art of inviting love and happiness in as the miraculous medicine for all diseases. NB: All Reiki Practitioners and Masters should be able to show you the chronological lineage from their Master Teacher to teachers dating back to the founder Mikao Usui in the late 1800’s – this means that they have been trained properly to carry out Reiki Healing and have been attuned in person and taught the correct principles. Only practitioners with a Reiki Degree 2 and above may professionally practice on other people. Unfortunately many people claim to be Reiki Practitioners after doing an on-line course, which hasn’t given them time to properly digest the study and practice behind it nor be attuned in person.

BOOK

REVIEW

By Astrid Kille

Be Mindful, be fabulous, ignite your business acumen and grow your own organic vegetables. These are all things we can accomplish this year with the help of a fabulous selection of books. The Rough Guide To Mindfulness Albert Tobler & Susann Herrmann (Penguin)

By now, I thought I had read all the self help books on the shelf and had the impression many of them seem to say the same thing… do this and do that and your life will change forever…umm, we all know that’s not true but still we remain hopeful of finding a magic pill to do the trick. When The Rough Guide to Mindfulness arrived on my desk my initial feeling was “Oh no, not another one” but, I was pleasantly surprised. This small concise book has grabbed my attention for days. I find myself reading..and thinking … putting its many messages into practice. Mindfulness, living in the present and being aware of everything you say and do, is important. We need to be reminded how to do that. The Rough Guide to Mindfulness doesn’t promise your life will change forever, it just gives you tools to keep your life in the present. When you practice mindfulness you achieve balance and a more peaceful existence. The book is written by two leading practitioners who have skillfully made it both easy to read and implement. I have been Mindful for the last week and seen many wonderful changes.

Lessons From The Boot Of A Car by Reg Lascaris (Penguin)

Reg Lascaris is one of South Africa’s most acclaimed award winning advertising

64

executives. His book is aimed at entrepreneurs who need encouragement to make a start in life. “If I can do it, so can you,” he says. We all have it in us; we just need to want it enough. Reg Lascaris literally started his business from the boot of his car, and nothing stopped him from reaching his dream. Reg’s work ranges from the famously funny Nandos campaigns, to the clever BMW mouse ad. Reg Lascaris and business partner John Hunt have contributed to the South African advertising industry in such a huge way that lessons from Reg are invaluable. For him to share them in his book is a real gift. Inside, he talks about how South Africa has developed socially and economically and how Hunt Lascaris the ad agency has contributed to that change. This is a great read and a must for people with entrepreneurial potential and the spirit to persevere.

Goddess Bootcamp by Kagiso Msimango (Jacana)

This is a potentially life changing book written for women. It motivates all women to change their lives from okay to fabulous – a change aimed to give life the WOW factor. Author Kagiso Msimango is an ambassador of womanly WOW!ness - a cheerleader and liberator of unlocking women’s magnificence. Both funny and meaningful, it offers guidelines to living despite all the pressures of what you are expected to be, what the media dictates and how photoshop has distorted our view of what women really are. Practical exercises offer awareness, knowledge and support in your everyday everything you need to live life well

life as a woman. It steers you away from settling for second best and aims you towards a happy heart and a more fulfilling life.

Grow To Live by Pat Featherstone (Jacana)

Just as the title suggests, this book is a complete guide on how to grow organic vegetables, heal the soil and live a quality life. Simple instructions and clear photographs make it that much easier to follow. Although books on gardening and growing vegetables are plentiful, this one looks at the lifestyle around living cleanly and the spiritual elements of healthy soil and life. To begin with it explains why organic is important, how to optimise your soil, what tools you need, getting started and goes through all aspects of growing your own food. It details natural recipes you can make to keep pests at bay using garlic, chilli and onions and how you will benefit from growing your own food. Above all it instills excitement at the prospect of living a cleaner, healthy lifestyle. As the back cover says: “The benefits of food gardens are many. They deepen our connection with nature, quieten our minds and create a new understanding of life. The food that is grown gives physical sustenance. The experience of growing it feeds the soul.” I highly recommend Pat Featherstone’s book if you are a beginner. Even if you are an experienced vegetable grower this is a book you can refer to time and time again. I certainly do and I have been growing my own organic vegetables for 20 years.

T

he foundation of the Geisha beauty routine closely resembles the traditional Japanese diet with a strong focus on green tea, rice and sea salt. Our beauty tips this month focus on these ingredients.

GREEN TEA You may have noticed more and more products are using green tea in their ingredient list. And you don’t necessarily have to drink it to reap the benefits. You can apply it externally with surprising results. Many who have tried it find it is especially good for helping hormonal acne and warding off wrinkles and sagging skin. It is said to flush toxins from the skin, help heal blemishes and soothe the complexion. Green tea has anti-bacterial catechins that help get rid of the bacteria that support acne. It has anti-inflammatory properties that calm inflamed or red skin. Apply it to pimples and it will help them heal without leaving scars. Some believe the components in green tea can reactivate damaged skin cells especially damage through pollution, sun and lifestyle habits.

Try these three green tea recipes - mix up a mask for acne or antiageing and make your own toner. 1. ANTI-ACNE 1tsp powdered green tea; 1 egg white; 1 tsp untreated raw honey. Whip the ingredients together with a fork or blender. Spread evenly on face and leave for thirty minutes. Rinse off well. 2. ANTI-AGING 3 Tbs full cream yoghurt; 1 Tbsp ground green tea leaves. Mix together, leave aside to combine for twenty minutes. Apply generously to face and leave for twenty minutes. Rinse off well. 3. TONING 5 tsp green tea leaves; 1 tsp mint leaves. Add the leaves to boiling water and let it stand until cool. Strain the leaves. Pour into a spray bottle to use as a spritzer or keep in a glass bottle and use with cotton wool pads.

tear or damage the skin but will gently clean skin leaving it rejuvenated and healthy. Mix 1 tablespoon of rice bran with a quantity of milk or yoghurt and make a thickish paste. After your normal cleansing routine, apply the paste and leave it to dry for about ten minutes. Before washing off cover the face with small circular movements. Pat dry and finish with a moisturiser.

GROUND RICE Rice is rich in gamma-oryzanol – a powerful antioxidant that boosts collagen production. Make it into a mask by grinding uncooked rice grains in a coffee grinder. Mix the resulting powder with a tablespoon of whipped cream. You can also use rice flour. It has a wonderful soft texture and will feel lovely against your skin. Apply to skin and neck and leave for twenty minutes. Rinse off well and end with a moisturiser.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Rich enzyme activity in apple cider clears away dead skin cells. Add it to shampoo to prevent dandruff and stimulate hair growth. Or put a capful in your bath for youthful skin. You can also dilute it with water (half water half cider) and use a cotton ball to pat onto skin. Leave it for about five minutes and rinse off. Your skin will feel very fresh and clean.

SEA SALT Salt is a wonderful body scrub and great for stimulating areas with cellulite. Increasing circulation in these areas helps flush toxins and also firms and smoothes the skin. While we usually mix salt with oils, a Japanese recipe uses whipped cream instead. Follow this example by blending 2 tablespoons of sea salt with a little whipped cream and mix into a body scrub. Use it midway between a bath or shower while the skin is warm. Massage in circular motions, then rinse it off and finish with body lotion.

ECO DIVA NICOLE’S DIY RECIPE Cellulite needs to be managed from the inside as well as externally. Internally, it’s important to keep your body pH balanced. Cut down on your intake of sugar, pastries, bread, alcohol, wheat, gluten and dairy. Eat plenty of fresh green vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli and beans and drink 6-8 glasses of lemon water every day to help flush out toxins. Supplement your diet with super greens like barley grass, spirulina and chlorella. These help to detox and rid the body of excess water retention, naturally. Externally, manage the condition with the following recipe:

Eco Diva Cellulite Buster Ingredients: • • • • • • •

1 cup brown sugar 1 cup caffeinated ground coffee ½ cup extra virgin olive oil 3 tblsp coconut oil 2 caps Super Greens Extra (Barley, chlorella, spirulina) * 10 drops grapefruit essential oil 10 drops rosemary essential oil

*available from www.vitology.co.za

Directions: Pour sugar, coffee, olive oil, coconut oil into a blender. Open the green capsules and empty them into the mixture. Blend until smooth. Add in the essential oils and blend again until creamy. Pour cream into a recycled glass container for storage. Jump in a shower and get clean. Then turn off the shower and apply the cellulite buster to the relevant areas and massage into the skin. This will get your circulation going. Massage for about 3 minutes. Rinse and wash as usual.

scented soy candles

Beautifully scented soy candles that double as a healing skin balm Presented in attractive boxes, the heavenly scented candles are a ‘green friendly’ absolutely natural product with more than just ambient appeal. Soy is a longer burning alternative to standard wax that excludes paraffin oil and harmful chemicals. As a by-product of soybean agriculture it also has renewable and green-friendly qualities. These candles can be used as a nourishing moisturiser by massaging the melted wax into the skin. As soybean burns at a lower temperature than normal wax you can pour the wax onto your hand and massage it onto your skin.

There’s nothing like a little help from nature or a well-researched lifestyle programme to get your body back into shape

THE SKINNY ON SLIM

There’s a distinct possibility that the December break has interrupted your usual routine of healthy eating and exercise – and the result may be a few extra grams or kilograms that you’d really like to get rid of.

F

ad diets are definitely not the way to go – it’s been proven again and again that slow and steady wins the sustainability race. But, there’s nothing like a little help from nature or a wellresearched lifestyle programme to get your body back into those gorgeous work outfits you swapped out in favour of holiday clothes for December.

did you know? University of Chicago researchers report that sleep deprivation upsets our hormone balance, triggering both a decrease in leptin (which helps you feel full) and an increase of ghrelin (which triggers hunger). The result is thinking you’re hungry even though you aren’t. So, while you’re looking for quick ways to slim down, perhaps a nap isn’t such a bad idea.

72

A healthy eating and exercise plan are simply the best ways to go, but if you’d like the whole process to speed up a little, we highlight two choices for getting rid of extra weight.

present in the body, preventing it from turning into fat •

Terminalia chebula, from the Myrobalan tree, has potent cholesterol-lowering properties

It’s becoming quite common for modern science to look back at ancient beliefs and remedies. And slimming is no different. Ayurvedic practices are filled to the brim with the wisdom of the ages, so it’s no wonder traditional Ayruvedic slimming recipes are once again coming to the forefront of weight loss programmes.

Trigonella foenum-graecum, more commonly known as fenugreek, helps reduce blood glucose levels.

Here are some of the plant-based extracts that have for centuries been touted as great weight loss tools:

BURN BABY BURN

ANCIENT SECRETS

Garcinia cambogia from the monkey fruit tree limits the synthesis of fatty acids in the muscles and liver – limiting production of lipids (this helps reduce the risk of bad cholesterol build up in your body as well as other unwanted fatty deposits)

Commiphora wightii, also known as guggul from the Mukul myrrh tree, reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Glymnema sylvestre, from the cowplant tree, helps to reduce sugar and sweet cravings and reduces excess sugar everything you need to live life well

Our favourite product at the moment that contains all these herbs is Ayurslim. It comes in capsule form and is a natural and safe body booster.

As with anything in life, there’s more than one way to reach a goal. Patrick Holford, international nutritional advisor has just released his 38th book. Together with Olympian Kate Staples, his new book Burn Fat Fast offers a weight loss plan that burns fat effectively, for the long term and without going hungry. By combining his well known low GL diet with intermittent fasting and a series of 30 minute cardio and 8 minute strength training exercises on fast days, the two authors have found a winning combination for relatively easy fat burning – without burning off muscle mass. The programme works by keeping the hormone insulin low, and this also has the positive effect of encouraging a longer life.

LIQUID GOLD

Argan oil, is widely celebrated as an all-over beauty balm. It comes from Morocco where it is sustainably harvested by local Berber women.

R

aw Argan nuts are hand cracked and ground in a stone grinder. They then have to be hand-kneaded for hours and cold pressed to extract the oil – a technique which has been used for centuries. A litre of oil takes one woman three days to make, that’s why it can be pricey. This arduous task is well worth the benefits though. Essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals have moisturising, softening and protective qualities for both skin and hair. Argan oil is used in its pure form without added toxins or parabens. Here are some of the many ways you can use it.

did you know? In 1998, the Argan forest in Morocco was designated a UNESCO protected biosphere, making Argan oil a sustainable product. The Argan tree only grows in South Western Morocco. Argan oil is also cultivated as a culinary oil used in salads, on couscous and for dipping bread. Argan oil is mixed with roasted almonds and honey to make a thick brown spread called Amlou eaten with bread.

5 Fabulous face applications

3 Ways with hair

Soften, tone, exfoliate, brighten & rejuvenate.

Condition, style, treat and shine.

1. Moisturise - After cleaning your face, massage a few drops of oil onto your face and neck. Argan is a dry oil that absorbs quickly and won’t leave your face greasy. Leave it overnight to work its magic.

1. Condition – After washing your hair, while it is still wet, add a few drops of Argan oil to your hair, especially the ends, and rub into scalp. It works well with hair damaged from colour and heat treatments.

2. Tone – Spike your favourite toner with a few drops of Argan oil for a hydrating and toning effect. Or add some Argan oil to Rose water for a hydrating balancing toner.

2. Style – Use it to style dry hair. Spread evenly over palms, rub hands together, and then work the oil evenly through your hair. It tames frizz and makes your hair shiny. Put tiny amounts on at a time as it takes a few minutes to get absorbed.

3. Rejuvenate – Use the oil to make a face mask. Grind some raw Adzuki beans (or use oat or almond flour), add a tablespoon of lemon juice, and a tablespoon of thick Greek yogurt with 5 drops of Argan. Mix everything well and apply to a clean face. Leave for ten minutes, massage with small circling movements before rinsing off.

3. Treatment – When using it as a treatment you can put a lot more directly onto dry hair. It’s best to leave it on overnight but you will have to cover your pillow or your hair. When you wash it off you will have ultra shiny and manageable hair.

4. Exfoliate – have you ever thought of conditioning dry lips with a light scrub? This mixture stops lips from getting dry and keeps them in great condition. Add Argan oil to pure liquid vanilla extract and coconut blossom sugar. Rub in circular movements over your lips and rinse off. 5. Glow – Add a drop or two of Argan oil to your foundation, bronzer or tinted moisturizer for a dewy, luminous glow.

everything you need to live life well

Hands & feet Cuticle and Heel Softener – Rub a few drops of Argan oil into your cuticles to soften and moisturize them. Get rid of dry and cracked heels by rubbing the oil all over your feet. Use it as an overnight treatment.

Bath & belly Add a few drops of Argan oil into your bath, it is also safe to use on babies and will help prevent stretch marks on a pregnant belly.

WHERE PAIN ENDS &

LIFE BEGINS

Manual Cell Stimulation (MCS) is a groundbreaking technique developed over the past 14 years and practiced only at the Nerve and Pain Release Centre. It is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment that removes pain, lameness, twitching and osteoarthritis. MCS works on a cellular level, in conjunction with nerve, muscle and bone memory.

“I am living a pain-free and full life with no sign of my previous injuries or defects of any kind. The treatment is truly a life investment that I will never regret. Lene Burden

Gentle, tactile stimulation gives permanent relief once the course of treatment has been completed. Confirmed by X-rays. Course lengths differ from person to person.
