PUBLISHER'S LETTER
T
raditionally, conventional advice centres around ‘thinking of other’s’ but we often get lost on that account and err on the side of sacrifice. To give freely and easily one needs to be in a position of strength where the giving doesn’t deplete but brings joy and satisfaction. That’s why this issue is focused on me-time. We love the idea of positive selfishness where giving to yourself first makes you more equipped to give to others. On ‘knowmyworth. com’ it says, ‘setting boundaries doesn’t make me mean. I can set limits and expectations for my life and still be ‘nice’. If you don’t like it, that belongs to you.’ Knowing yourself more deeply is a great start and that’s why we included the ‘principles of Ayurveda’ for a brief insight into temperament and inclinations. Looking at our food section for this month I am struck by how much our diets have changed over the years. The more we research and know, the more we can adapt our eating habits for optimum energy and nutrition. On that note, I urge you to take advantage of the healing qualities of spices and use them more extensively in your diet. We are privileged to have met Shirley Kaplan, the adventurous 82-year old who is a real inspiration towards living life well and testament that age doesn’t define quality of life. So, page through our me-time tips and challenge yourself to embrace wellness in a personal, empowering and individual way. Oh, and don’t forget to visit us at our brand new store in the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town. We are delighted to bring another Wellness Warehouse outlet to you in our quest to help you live life well. Here’s to you and having more me-time. Yours in wellness Dr. Sean Gomes Co-founder

Wellness Select Palmyra Palmyra Junction, Claremont, Cape Town. 021 671 2363
“I really believe ‘me time’ is very important, physically and mentally. It’s a not a luxury, it’s a must which you shouldn’t feel guilty about. Giving yourself this break makes you refreshed, recharged and happier. My “me time” basically comes down to making jewellery and beading (Romeo Foxtrot Designs and Prayerworks available at selected Wellness Stores). It helps me keep up with my creativity and also makes me reflect thoughts in the process. I am lucky enough to have been able to turn my hobby into a business, so I get plenty of me time through constantly designing new pieces! I also love to watch TV series marathons and one of my most favourite, pamper time! There is nothing as amazing than running a bath with bath salts and some soy candles (Of course the Wellness brands is my favourite). Make sure to read our We tried It Section for the ultimate Me Time Spa package too. When you have Me Time it gives you a chance to celebrate yourself, which should be very often.”

EDITOR’S CHOICE
Be Healthily Selfish Positive selfishness means choosing to spend your time and energy on things that bring you joy; letting go of other people’s scripts and making decisions based on your needs. Truth is universal and generally what works for you will be good for everyone else even if at first it doesn’t seem that way. It’s easier to do this when you let go of guilt by knowing that people are often empowered by having to find their own solutions. When honouring your self-interests you will be physically and emotionally present without resentment towards others.

THE STORY BEHIND
HIMALAYA HERBAL HEALTHCARE From the forests of Burma to the rest of the world
H
imalaya’s story began way back in 1930 when their founder, Mr. M. Manal, riding through the forests of Burma, saw a villager pacify a restless elephant by feeding it the root of the plant, Rauwolfia serpentina. Fascinated by the plant’s effect on the elephant, he had it scientifically tested. After researching the herb, Serpina®, the world’s first natural antihypertensive drug, was launched in 1934. Today, Himalaya Herbal Healthcare is present in more than 80 countries in different parts of the world.

Working with nature Himalaya supports green initiatives. They believe in products that are good for you and good for the earth. “Since we work so closely with nature, we understand that nature has a rhythm. If we tip the balance, it could alter the ecosystem forever.” Through

did you know? Himalaya is involved in a community project called ‘Abhiyaan’ (adopted farmers programme) where they have engaged over 4,000 small and marginal farmers across India to grow medicinal herbs. The majority of these farmers have small tracts of land of about three to four acres. These farmers are given support to diversify their crops and generate additional income by cultivating herbs like Alfalfa, Ashwagandha, Tulasi, Ginger, Turmeric, Shatavari, Vetiver, Mucuna and Kalmegh.
Personal Care Products
CARE FOR COMMUNITY Giving prison inmates a second chance Himalaya works with local prison authorities in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in India, to rehabilitate inmates. The prisoners cultivate herbs for Himalaya, earn an income and acquire essential skills. They provide seeds, technical assistance and training to the prisoners. This programme is about giving prisoners a second chance to rebuild their lives. Most of the inmates own small plots of farmland back in their villages. By participating in this project, they can reconnect with farming. The aim of the project is to ease the inmates’ reintegration into society by teaching them skills and helping build their self-esteem.
Message in a honey bottle What makes Himalaya Soliga Forest Honey special is that it comes from the tropical forests of South India and is collected by the Soligas, a traditional honey collecting tribe inhabiting the forest.
People in Himalaya Today, Himalaya, spread over more than 80 countries, has a family of over 5,000 employees worldwide, including a team of over 200 passionate and energetic research scientists! People are Himalaya’s most important asset and they believe that investing in them is vital to their business. “From giving them the creative freedom to push the boundaries of research to fostering a culture of open communication and diversity, we believe that our nurturing work environment brings out the best in our team and allows us to develop the best products.” Each and every Himalaya employee is unique and contributes to the success of the organization. All of them are committed to making a difference.
Himalaya Soliga Forest Honey has three times more bioflavonoids and seven times more antioxidants than most honeys! But it is the Soligas and their story that gives this honey its extra goodness. Through this honey collecting project, Himalaya supports over a 1000 Soliga families. A percentage of Himalaya’s profit from this product has been set aside to help the Soligas improve their lives.

Is a vegetarian diet enough? The recent popularity of the high-protein, high-fat diet, more suited to carnivores has put vegetarianism under the spotlight, with some wondering whether you can get all the nutrition you need from a plant-based diet. Flexi-what?
Iron out those shortages
Enter flexitarianism. The philosophy behind flexitarianism is very simple. Food writer Michael Pollan sums it up nicely: ‘eat food, mainly plants, not too much’. It makes sense for carnivorous types who need to up their veggie intake, as well as for vegetarians looking to add diversity (and possibly more animal protein) to their diets. Flexitarianism doesn’t ‘ban’ meat and other foods derived from animals; it just suggests limiting them.
The nutrient vegetarians most commonly suffer shortages of is iron. Women in particular are prone to iron shortages, and this applies to even those who eat meat regularly. Red meat is the richest source of the kind of iron that’s most easily absorbed by the body. The bad news for vegetarians and vegans is that vegetable sources of iron simply aren’t as easy for the body to use as those from meat and sometimes supplementing might be recommended.
KELP POWDER
Kelp is a source of the minerals iron, calcium, and potassium. Add a little kelp powder to juices and smoothies.
Find the right fats
Vegetarianism with benefits? Flexitarian diets often describe diets that are ‘mostly’ vegetarian and occasionally include meat. How often meat is eaten is hard to define – it could be once a month, once a week, or three times a week. ‘Often’, after all, is relative, and there’s no standard agreement on this. The movement hit the mainstream in 2008 with the publishing of the book The Flexitarian Diet by Dawn Jackson Blatner
Quality proteins Ask anyone what vegetarian diets are most likely to be missing and they’ll probably say protein. Protein deficiency is actually very rare in the developed world, though – even among vegetarians. There are plenty of vegetarian sources of protein, like egg and dairy, lentils and chickpeas, seeds, nuts and nut butter. Quinoa is an especially good source of protein for vegans specifically, as it’s a seed that contains all nine of the essential amino acids – the building blocks of protein that the body can’t make on its own and must get from food.
People eating a typical Western diet tend to take in too many omega-6 fatty acids (found in sunflower oil, for example) and too few omega-3 fatty acids (found in fatty fish like salmon). Vegetarians, who don’t eat fish, need to look for other sources of omega-3s, like flaxseeds and hemp seeds.
Natures Choice Kelp Powder 120g R13.99
MACA POWDER
Besides being rich in vitamins B, C, and E, raw maca powder is also a source of calcium, zinc, iron, and amino acids.
Superfood solutions If you’re looking for ways to add more essentials to your vegetarian diet without adding more animal products, superfoods might just be the way to go. Superfoods are nature’s miracle foods, packed with protein, vitamins and minerals, and healthy essentials fatty acids.
CHIA SEEDS
Chia seeds are high in protein, high in iron, and contain more omega-3 fatty acids than any other seed. Tip: Cover the seeds in water, soak for five minutes, and have as a breakfast porridge with almond milk, xylitol and cinnamon.
Wellness Organic Raw Maca Powder 200g R99.99
When it comes to your diet, the bottom line is: if you feel good, you’re probably doing good things for your body. If the food you’re eating is making you feel bad, you might need to make some changes.

Can you be paleo and vegetarian? These products can all be used as whole food supplements. They are naturally gluten free, high in dietary fibre and convenient for adding to smoothies. Chia seeds and psyllium husks can also be used in gluten free baking.
It depends who you ask, really. The hardcore high-protein, low-carb eater might take issue with the idea of vegetarian, and especially vegan diets. If you’d like to experiment with adding more protein to your diet, though, some protein supplements will get more gold stars from the paleos and the Banters than others. Here’s why Wellness gives these three vegan (that is, they’re completely free of animal products) protein powders full marks.
PROTEIN PLUS Hemp seeds are considered a very good source of protein and, unusually for vegan sources of protein, they’re very low in carbohydrates. Of course, as they’re seeds, they’re grain-free. They’re high in healthy omega-fatty acids, too. Choose organic, raw, hemp seed powder. Wellness Organic Raw Hemp Powder 200g R34.99

Ghee
Although ghee is not that familiar to many, it is a staple in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Ghee is clarified butter. This means all the dairy particles have been filtered out making it safe to use if you are dairy intolerant. Where dairy in butter is congestive and mucous producing, ghee is not. Ghee has a strong golden yellow colour and is easily digested. It is also known to lubricate, soften and moisturize the body with warming and strengthening qualities. It is more concentrated than butter (since butter also contains a lot of water) and so costs a little more but you will find a little goes a long way. Ghee keeps well, even at room temperature. It has a high smoke point and good to cook with as it doesn’t burn and stand the risk of creating carcinogenic compounds. Ghee can be used as a spread, in baking, cooking and deep frying. With so many people following the paleo diet, fats have become less of a no-no and used more lavishly both in cooking and flavouring. In the Real Meal Revolution (Quivertree) it states that “Fat is your friend. Fat fuels us. The body needs fat.” Here are three paleo-friendly fats worth keeping in your pantry.
did you know? Using cooking oil with a high smoke point prevents certain radicals and toxins from ending up in your meal. When oil is heated past its smoke point it begins to break down and can create trans fats – a leading contributor to heart disease, cancer and other chronic health conditions. Whichever oil you use to cook with, make sure it has a high smoke point.
16
Macadamia nut oil has a mild buttery, nut flavour with a velvety smooth texture that makes it perfect for luxurious dressings and dips. Anyone eating macadamia nuts will notice its high oil content. It is the most energy dense nut of all. Being resistant to heat-induced oxidation, (having a high smoke point) it is good for cooking and roasting. It is also shelf-stable and keeps fresh for a long time especially if stored in a dark bottle or in the fridge. Macadamia nut oil is one of the most heart-friendly oils available. It has 80 to 85 percent monounsaturated oil including Vitamin E, Omega-3, Omega-6, oleic, linolenic, linoleic and palmitoleic acids. Use macadamia oil for salad dressings, to make homemade mayonnaise, stir frying, cooking, roasting and essentially anything you’d normally use olive oil for. You can also use it as a body product - for shaving and moisturizing. Mc Nutti Macadamia Nut Oil 500ml R115
Coconut Oil
Studies show that a daily intake of coconut oil can help increase the body’s resistance to viruses and bacteria and also can help fight off yeast, fungus and candida. It has also shown to help the body in how it handles blood sugar. It’s said to boost thyroid function increasing metabolism, energy and endurance. Digestion is improved and so is absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Coconut fat contains medium chain triglycerides which are good for energy burning. It has a high smoke point and can be used in place of your regular oil for cooking and baking. It is solid below 24 degress Celcius and hardens above that temperature so don’t expect to use it as a salad dressing oil if the temperature is cool. You can usually choose between deodorized coconut oil which has no coconut in its smell or taste or standard coconut oil which does impart a flavour. Coconut oil can be used in baking, frying, cooking, sauté’s but can also be used to add to smoothies or oatmeal for a healthy twist. Besides the kitchen, coconut oil is excellent as a bath, body or hair oil. Wellness Organic Coconut Oil 500ml R109.99

did you know? Paul Breslin of Rutgers University when exploring the role of mood in taste found that taste sensitivity was less intense when emotions ran high. When anxious, emotional or even when in love, subjects expressed considerably less taste and appreciation for food. Researchers surmised that this may be the reason people often lose weight when depressed or when in love.

Metabolic Superfood
During an event in Berlin’s Lost and Found Salon in Berlin (a project spearheaded by Daniel Ludevig and Kit Shulte) the Chef speaks about matching your menu with your mood. During winter when the days get shorter, darker and colder people tend to become more melancholic. This feeling can be balanced with food that has the opposite qualities to the weather – e.g. cold and wet weather can be countered with warm and dry food. His favourite dish to treat melancholy is Borage Risotto (Borage is believed to have an anti-depressant and relaxing effect on the body and mind and Risotto is comforting). For dessert his suggestion is a luke warm beetroot-chocolate tarte. Beetroot helps strengthen the immune system and has antioxidants needed to fight free radicals in the cells; and chocolate has tryptophane that boosts mood.

SUGAR ALTERNATIVES
Coconut Sugar is
More and more people are looking to replace foods with a negative health rap for foods with a healthier reputation. Here are some sugar alternatives that make good replacements for cane sugar.
Stevia comes from a plant indigenous to South America. It is 300 times sweeter than sugar yet has no calories, no glycemic impact and no carbohydrates. This means it is suitable for diabetics and weight watchers. Some find the taste difficult to get used to, it has a hint of a licorice aftertaste. Xylitol is
found naturally in fibrous fruits and vegetables. It is a five-carbon sugar (five carbon atoms in the molecule) unlike most other sugars, which have six. This subtle difference means it helps prevent the growth of bacteria. For this reason it’s often found in chewing gum. Although it’s more pricey than sugar, it’s a healthier alternative. It has a low glycaemic index and doesn’t spike sugar levels. It also has half the calories of cane sugar.
a brown granular sugar that comes from the coconut palm. Coconut sugar is nutritious and has a low score on the glycemic index, which means stable blood sugar. It has a more caramel taste than cane sugar and spoon for spoon is an excellent substitute.
Date Sugar
comes from dehydrated and ground dates. Keeping the nutritional benefits of dates, it has a rich sweet flavour that makes it an ideal alternative to brown sugar. It doesn’t melt or dissolve easily so cannot be used in drinks but is good for most baking recipes.
Honey is
packed with vitamins and has antimicrobial properties. It’s important to choose raw, unheated versions as heat destroys some of the nutrition content. It has a slightly lower glycaemic index than cane sugar. Although it has more calories than normal sugar it is also sweeter. Honey contains trace enzymes, minerals, amino acids and a wide range of B vitamins.
Maple Syrup is
tapped from different varieties of maple tree. It has a delicious distinctive taste and has a thin syrupy consistency. It also comes in sugar form
from dehydrating the syrup. This natural sweetener has over 54 antioxidants and high levels of zinc and manganese, useful for heart health and boosting immunity. Make sure you get pure maple syrup and not a sugar laden version.
Molasses is a by-product of cane sugar. It has more nutrition than finished cane sugar. Blackstrap molasses is perhaps the most beneficial and is a good source of iron and calcium. It’s thick and viscous and best used in baking. It is also sweeter than sugar, so you’ll need less. It has a moderate glycaemic index (lower than sugar). A tablespoon of molasses has 58 calories, all of which come from carbohydrates. Agave is a plant with close resemblance to an aloe or cactus that grows in dry regions especially in Southern Mexico. In Mexico, they call the nectar from the plant ‘honey water’. Agave syrup can be used as a sugar option for tea and coffee. It tastes similar to honey or maple syrup, although lighter. It has a thinner texture and consistency than honey, but thicker than maple syrup. It is a good sweetener to replace cane sugar. It has a few more calories than cane sugar but is about 1 ½ times sweeter.

BULLET PROOF COFFEE Coffee made with coconut oil and butter seems a little off-beat, but after travelling through Tibet and experiencing the rejuvenating effect of creamy yak butter tea, Founder and CEO of The Bulletproof Executive, Dave Asprey developed a recipe he swears by.
D
ave’s recipe is used by recording artists before they go on stage, champion athletes, and some of the world’s top executives. That’s because he says it has a massive impact on cognitive function. He also believes his formula is fat-burning and supplies ample antioxidants. Basically, it’s coffee blended at high speed with a tablespoon each of unsalted, grassfed butter and coconut oil. The result is an incredibly creamy, satisfying refreshment that’s said to provide level energy for six hours or more. Here’s the recipe for one cup:
BULLET PROOF COFFEE Makes 1 cup
INGREDIENTS 1 CUP OF FILTER COFFEE MADE IN YOUR USUAL FASHION (EXPRESS IT, USE A CAPSULE, A BODUM OR BREW IT ON THE STOVE)
24
1 TABLESPOON OF COCONUT OIL (USE NON-GMO HIGH QUALITY OIL) 1 TABLESPOON OF GRASS-FED BUTTER (NON-SALTED, DON’T USE MARGARINE OR ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE - GRASS FED GHEE IS ALSO OKAY) IF NECESSARY, ADD YOUR FAVOURITE HEALTHY SWEETENER – STEVIA OR XYLITOL ARE RECOMMENDED.
1. 2. 3.
Warm your blender with a cup of boiling water. Throw out the water and add all the above ingredients. Blend on high speed for a minute. You will notice a delicious creamy froth collects on the top.
Grass-fed cows apparently make butter with healthy fats, different to soy or grain fed cows. Coffee has a thermogenic effect that increases metabolic rate and stimulates movement. It also increases fat mobilization and oxidation which promotes fat loss. People respond to caffeine in different ways, so be sure to test its effect on yourself. If you have hypertension, avoid caffeine.
helping you live life well
Coffee has a reputation of being unhealthy, but used properly and in the right quantity it can improve brain function and scavenge free radicals. It’s a rich source of polyphenols and antioxidants; the caffeine in coffee can increase memory and improve glucose tolerance, fat loss, and exercise performance. Remember though, ‘everything in moderation’ and stick to one cup a day.
High amounts of caffeine can cause problems like decreased insulin sensitivity, impaired brian function, jitters, nervousness, stomach discomfort, and decreased exercise performance. Fat Loss - consuming medium-chain triglycerides found in coconut oil, has been shown to lead to greater losses of the adipose tissue (fat) in animals and humans. Energy - studies have shown that the fast rate of oxidation of (medium chain fatty acids) leads to increased energy expenditure.

We are talking about coffee derived from ground beans, not instant or liquid coffee. If you want to live longer, have a sharper mind, put goodness into your system, have heightened physical reactions, and in general be happier - drink coffee. If you like people and want to be productive creative and inspired, then head off to your favourite Caf to drink coffee.
COFFEE, GOING STRONG
Coffee has been surrounded in myths for centuries, some say don’t drink coffee, it’s bad for you, others say it’s full of health benefits, still others say it’s okay in moderation. We stumbled across Jake Easton from the Tribe Coffee company who is convinced that coffee is not the villain from the past and that it actually improves body functioning. He is also convinced it was discovered by a woman. Jake reports:
T
he first myth is that it was discovered by Arabic people. Coffee’s genetic home is in Southern Ethiopia near the Kenyan border. This area has been populated for millennia with indigenous tribal peoples like the Oromia Tribe. That young Oromia herders noticed their livestock eating cherries from wild coffee is for all intents true. That they then took the cherries and seeds home to see if they too could eat them is highly likely. Food preparation was done by women and it can only have been a woman who made the first cup of coffee. Is this fact? We may never know but in my mind, coffee was created by an african woman… un-named, lost to history, and hidden behind the male Arabic trader who proclaimed coffee as belonging to the conqueror.
WOW FACTS ABOUT COFFEE 1. Coffee Can Make You Smarter Coffee doesn’t just keep you awake, it may literally make you smarter. In the brain caffeine acts to block the effects of Adenosine (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) and in doing so, increases neuron activity. Trials in Europe and America show that caffeine can improve mood, reaction time, memory, vigilance and general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Can Help Burn Fat and Improve Physical Performance Caffeine, because of its stimulant effect on the central nervous system, both raises metabolism and increases the oxidation of fatty acids. It can improve athletic performance by mobilising fatty acids from the fat tissues. In several analyses from North America, caffeine was found to increase exercise performance by an average of 11-12%. 3. Coffee May Drastically Lower Risk of Type II Diabetes Type II diabetes is characterised by high blood sugar levels due to insulin resistance or an inability to produce insulin. In observational studies, coffee has been repeatedly associated with a lower risk of diabetes (from 23% all the way up to 67%). A review article examined 18 studies with 457,922 participants. Each additional cup of coffee per day lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%. 4. Coffee & Risk of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age. Coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the
helping you live life well
brain. Coffee may lower the risk of Parkinson’s by 32-60%. 5. Coffee is Good For Your Liver The liver is a remarkable organ vulnerable to excess consumption of alcohol and sugars. Cirrhosis of the liver is the end stage of liver damage caused by diseases like alcoholism and hepatitis. Studies have shown that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80%. The strongest effect was found in people who drank four or more cups a day. WARNING: Although these benefits have been researched and studied, there may be reasons you are not able to drink coffee or it may be that coffee has a negative effect on your nervous system. Children and pregnant women should avoid coffee.

A slice above the rest
Visiting the Fourie farm is reminiscent of a bygone era where life seemed to pass by slower. This fifth generation family business is a way of life. They pride themselves in producing a natural and healthy product from the premium quality wheat the Overberg has to offer.
“
It’s all about traceability; from our fields to your plate. We believe strongly in farming for the future by caring for the soil today. We understand that in the process of cultivating our crops we need to consider people first. Health and well-being is our focus and leaving a legacy is what this product is all about.” Golden Reef Milling is a small company situated on the Fourie family farm near Greyton in the Overberg owned by Heinie and Tirsa Fourie. Heinie is a fourth generation farmer who farms with wheat, barley, canola and sheep. They started the mill in 1999 primarily to add value to their wheat farming, but Heinie always had a dream of producing a more exclusive product; a natural and healthier flour. He started doing research on biological farming methods, realising that to produce a more healthy flour, he had to start by looking at
28
his soil. This is how BIO-WHEAT™ was born. Next came a revamp of the packaging. “This was a daunting task.” explains Tirsa who wanted to market their product in the same way wine farmers do; using the family business angle and promoting their flour as a lifestyle product. This they did by featuring their kids on the labels. Kaylen and Christoff are the fifth generation - that’s where the fifth generation quality guarantee comes in. They came across a quote by a 19th century environmentalist, Aldo Leopold, which inspired them so much they have included it on their packaging. “The oldest task in human history is to live on a piece of land without spoiling it”. The Fourie’s started doing research on international food packaging trends. “In SA our flour packaging is very dull and boring and we decided to go with a more trendy helping you live life well
look; the choice of black for flour packaging was a bit risky, but we felt inspired to take that leap of faith.” Together with graphic designer, Louise van der Westhuizen from Lovelab Design and photographer Annemari Ruthven they developed a brand they are very proud of. Heinie and Tirsa met at varsity in Stellenbosch, fell in love and got married. This was 18 years ago. She was a city girl from Cape Town and not the most suitable choice for the ‘Boerseun’, but she fell in love with the farm and the way of life and today wouldn’t change it for the world. Their farm is in the beautiful Overberg farming region surrounded by majestic mountains and in wintertime, colourful fields. “It’s a wonderful place for our kids to grow up,” says Tirsa, “especially as farming is Heinie’s passion. Perfecting and marketing his flour is his hobby.

We understand that in the process of cultivating our crops we need to consider people first. BIO-WHEAT is a natural, healthy choice… It’s about a way of life
“We would love our product to become a household name, but we still have a very long road to go before getting there,” says Tirsa. For the immediate future they want to push up production to meet the growing demand for their product. They have created jobs for an additional 10 -12 workers and in future hope to increase this number as the business grows. They are determined though, to keep the personal touch and get their kids involved in the business. The kids are the reason they started BIO-WHEAT™ and they want them to be able to carry on and expand the business successfully one day; always producing flour that bakes bread that is ‘a slice above the rest’.
BIO-WHEAT wants to get people back to the basics of baking. Their flour makes it possible to bake your own homemade bread in no time. Each one of our products has an easy-bake recipe on the back; tried and tested by someone in the Fourie family. BIO-WHEAT FLOUR is a strong flour with excellent rising quality and suitable for all kinds of baking, but especially for bread, pizza bases, rotis, wraps and homemade pasta. Besides that, it makes the best ‘roosterkoeke’ and ‘stokbrood’ ever. Heinie’s mom’s ‘EEZY PEEZY CHOCOLATE CAKE’ is the kids’ and their friends favourite. BIO-WHEAT™ packaging is highly attractive and makes a novel hostess gift. It also inspires people to start baking again. All the BIO-WHEAT™ flour is grown, milled, packed on and distributed from the farm. The owner is the farmer, the miller, the marketer and the father of the kids on the packet. “It’s very important to us to be involved in every process of producing our product so we can guarantee absolute integrity. Traceability is of the utmost importance to the integrity of our product,” emphasises
Tirsa. Every packet of BIO-WHEAT is hand packed and they take great care to make sure they we live up to the 5th generation quality guarantee. The wheat milled for BIO-WHEAT™ FLOUR is cultivated by means of biological farming. This means they apply crop rotation to replenish the soil by recycling their wheat crops with legume pastures. After harvesting, more organic matter is left in the soil to break down into natural humus. This reduces the need for chemical fertilizer, and in addition less pesticides are administered: pests do not like a healthy crop. BIO-WHEAT™ is stone ground; a process where the wheat is ground slowly between the stones without exposing it to excessive heat. This means it retains nutritional vitamins, enzymes, wheat germ and fibre. In essence, stone ground promises nothing added or removed. The wheat is planted and harvested on the farm. They also occasionally get additional wheat from trusted suppliers in the farming area. The wheat goes through the milling process, is packed and distributed. They then handle most of the marketing, distribution and administration themselves.
did you know? Many people avoid bread, because it makes them feel bloated and affects their digestion. BIO-WHEAT is testament that bread baked from good flour should not be bad for you. Keep in mind that stone ground flour has a cooler and slower milling process. This means it retains most of the wheat germ. Wheat germ contains all the nutritional vitamins and enzymes you need for the natural digestion of the protein in wheat. BIO-WHEAT is a natural product, containing no preservatives, additives or improvers; components often present in bread baked from commercially milled flour.

Use a yoga tree pose to inject energy into your body any time of the day. Rather than thinking you have to sign up at a yoga studio before you start practicing yoga, use a yoga pose to kick-start a dreary task or a lagging work stretch. While doing a tree pose imagine receiving energy from the plant kingdom, imagine your cells being nourished and your body flooding with oxygen. This yoga pose helps with balance, increases concentration and makes you breath more deeply. Stand straight up, extend your spine upwards but relax your shoulders down. Make your right leg strong, bring the sole of your left foot to your right inner thigh. Find your balance then extend your arms up above your head and place your palms together towards the sky. Breath deeply. Repeat with the other leg. Try and hold the pose for two minutes on each side. To keep your balance, blur your eyes and stare at one spot in front of you.

did you know? You can tame tension headaches by rubbing peppermint oil, Tiger Balm, or white flower oil into your temples. All three remedies contain menthol, which has analgesic properties.
Something as simple as drinking lemon water throughout the day will keep your acidity levels down. Most people regard lemon as acidic but lemon has an alkaline effect in the body. It is also a natural energiser, it hydrates and oxygenates the body so it feels revitalised and refreshed. It helps throat infections, is excellent for weight loss, purifies blood, decreases wrinkles and blemishes and boosts the immune system. Simply squeeze half a lemon into a glass of your favourite drinking water.
Relieve sore joints
Most over-the-counter remedies to relieve joint pain include capsaicin. Capsaicin is found in hot peppers and has an inhibitory effect on what’s known as Substance P. Substance P is involved in sending pain signals to the brain, but when capsaicin interferes with it, it stops some of the discomfort. In other words capsaicin depletes the pain neurotransmitter, the brain doesn’t get the message or the resultant pain. This process can be achieved with a topical cream and the good news is you can make your own at home with humble cayenne. Be warned though, this is a temporary fix and should be used sparingly. It can also have a slightly burny effect on the skin so test it first if you have sensitive skin.
Homemade Cayenne lotion for Arthritis & Joint Pain INGREDIENTS: • 3 tablespoons of cayenne powder • 1 cup of grapeseed oil (or any other oil like almond, olive, jojoba) • 1/2 cup of grated beeswax • A double boiler • A glass jar with a tightly fitting lid
Wellness Organic Cayenne Pepper 60g R26.99
Directions: Put the cayenne powder with the oil into a double boiler and heat for 5-10 minutes on medium. Slowly stir in the grated beeswax until it has melted completely and everything is mixed well. Let it chill for twenty minutes and then whisk the ingredients well. Chill it for a further fifteen minutes and whip it well. Store in the fridge in a glass jar with a tightly fitting lid. Your remedy will keep for up to two weeks. Use it whenever needed for pain.

PRINCIPLES OF
AYURVEDA Ayurveda (pronounced I-your-vay-da) is a five thousand year old system of natural healing. It originates from the Vedic culture of India. Tibetan medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as early Greek medicine all use concepts taken from Ayurveda. Ayurveda uses a therapeutic model that allows individuals a deeper understanding of their individual temperament.

B
esides having a system for treating illness, Ayurveda also carries a body of profound wisdom anyone can apply for a more vital and empowered existence. It recognizes each individual’s personal circumstances, tendencies and constitution. It takes into account the influence of seasons and life stages. Ayurveda provides guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses. Rather than zoning in on a specific illness, it looks towards a balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit. With nature as its blueprint, three energies are said to govern our inner and outer environments. These are movement, transformation, and structure. Also known as wind, fire and earth (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). These primary forces are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. At any one time we all have a certain proportion of these three forces that shape our current nature. If Vata (wind) is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta (fire) predominates, we will be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented with a strong appetite for life. When Kapha (earth) prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing.
Although every one has each of these influences in them, most people have one or two that dominate. Knowing your nature in terms of the primary forces allows you a better understanding of yourself. It also helps you bring balance by compensating with the element you need more of. This is when the popular saying of ‘opposites attract’ makes sense. You will often attract something of what you need more of to bring about balance. If you have too much Vata (wind) you may experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation, and difficulty focusing. Too much Pitta (fire) can create compulsiveness and irritability and you may experience indigestion or an inflammatory condition. Too much Kapha (earth) a person may experience sluggishness, weight gain, and sinus congestion.
Finding balance is done through diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, meditation and movement arts.

is represented by ether and air elements. It is responsible for movement in the body and mind. When in balance, Vata produces flexibility and a balanced mind. When out of balance a predominantly Vata person will be fearful, anxious and nervous.
ether air Pitta
consists of fire and water. Pitta is associated with the digestive processes, metabolic activity and body temperature. Balanced Pitta lends itself to intelligence and leadership. Out of balance it expresses itself as anger, hatred and jealousy.

Dietary dilemma
By Dr Yesheen Singh
Dieting has always been a hot topic but lately there’s been a huge movement converting to the low-carb diet option. With any dietary programme one needs to look at long-term sustainability. Dieting has been part of Western conversation since the 19th century. Apple cider vinegar was promoted by Lord Byron in the 1820’s. The grapefruit diet was created in the 1930’s, followed by the original shake-based diet, Slim-Fast, in the 1970’s. The 80’s and 90’s gave rise to Fit For Life, Herbalife, Weigh Less, Blood Type and Dr Atkins, and the new millennium saw the macrobiotic, Master Cleanse and South Beach diets rise in popularity. Currently, we have raw, paleo and mediterranean cookbooks vying for shelf space in the kitchen.

The concept of ‘food as medicine’ has a strong focus on spices as research uncovers more and more medicinal benefits and people look towards food to protect and heal illness.
Spice up
YOUR HEALTH Stories of long trading journeys to the East have given spices a romantic and exotic allure. Meals with secret blends of spices have been known to seduce kings and rulers into policies that shape history. In India, kitchens are filled with whole spices, tea is spiced even breakfast is spiced, anytime of the day you can smell mustard seeds popping in hot oil or cardamom sizzling on a skillet. 36

E
very household is skilled in the art of spices and consequently digestive problems are practically non-existent. In China, ginger is used extensively, ginger pieces are dished up before a meal, ginger tea is commonly served after a meal and candied ginger is a popular dessert. Both these cultures have a strong sense of ‘food as medicine.’ Robert Svoboda, author of Ayurveda, Life, Health and Longevity, (Penguin) calls ginger the supreme toxin digester.
“Turmeric is the best medicine in Ayurveda, it cures the whole person,” says Vasant and Usha Lad, authors of Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-Healing (Ayurveda Press). Curiosity about the medicinal properties and healing potential of spices continues unabated. Scan through the PubMed database (the world’s leading repository of medical research) and you will find thousands of research papers on the Big 4: turmeric, cayenne, ginger and cinnamon – the so-called Super-Spices.
did you know? About 500 years ago Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope and tacked for Calicut on the Indian coast. This opened up a vital new spice route that connected Renaissance Europe with the New World. The same spices that inspired such bold adventure are now attracting equal exploration in the direction of health benefits they are able to offer mankind.
HERE’S A QUICK RUNDOWN ON SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF THE BIG 4: Turmeric In India, turmeric paste is applied to wounds to speed healing; people sip turmeric tea to relieve colds and respiratory problems. Modern medicine confirms some rock-solid health benefits as well; most are associated with curcumin, a compound in turmeric that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been shown to help relieve pain of arthritis, injuries and dental procedures; it’s also being studied for its potential in managing heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
Ginger Traditionally used to relieve colds and stomach problems, ginger is rich in inflammation-fighting compounds called gingerols which some experts believe may hold promise in fighting some cancers and reducing arthritis pain. In one study, people who took ginger capsules daily for 11 days reported 25 percent less muscle pain when they performed exercises designed to strain their muscles (compared with a similar group taking placebo capsules). Another study found that ginger extract injections helped relieve osteoarthritis pain. And ginger’s reputation as a stomach soother seems deserved: studies show ginger extracts can help reduce nausea caused by morning sickness or following surgery or chemotherapy, though it’s less effective for motion sickness.
Some researchers are also positive about curcumin’s potential as a cancer treatment, particularly in colon, prostate and breast cancers. Preliminary studies have found that curcumin can inhibit tumor cell growth and suppress enzymes that activate carcinogens.
Cinnamon
Cayenne Cayenne (or chilli) peppers create sensations of heat, from mild to fiery, and are especially prized in hot climates because, ironically, the spice helps trigger the body’s natural cooling system. Studies show that capsaicin—a pungent compound in hot chillies—revs up the body’s metabolism and may boost fat burning. Capsaicin may also lower risk of ulcers by boosting the ability of stomach cells to resist infection by ulcer-causing bacteria and help the heart by keeping ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol from turning into a more lethal, artery-clogging form.
www.wellnesswarehouse.com
Cinnamon has been shown to effectively lower blood sugar. In one such study, cinnamon was found to increase glucose metabolism 20-fold! In another, half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day significantly reduced blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It also reduces triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels among this group. Cinnamon lowers your blood sugar by acting on multiple levels. It slows the emptying of your stomach to reduce sharp rises in blood sugar following meals, and improves the effectiveness of insulin. It also enhances your antioxidant defenses.

DOGGIE DEBATE By Paul Jacobson owner of Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition There is much debate as to whether dogs should be given a raw diet or whether cooked food is best for them. Some believe their beloved ‘Fido’ is a descendent from the Wolf, while others believe they descend from the dingo, jackal, fox, or even coyote. As far back as 1868 Darwin said, “We shall probably never be able to ascertain their origin with certainty.” One thing we know for sure is that, regardless of where they originated from, research shows that domesticated dogs have been eating cooked food for thousands of years. Paul Jacobson from Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition believes that domesticated dogs can no longer digest copious amounts of raw meat but prefer a diet rich in vegetables, nutritional pulses and quality meat. Centuries of domestication have transformed their glandular and digestive systems. What is important though, is to give dogs a natural diet free of preservatives. Where possible, organic herbs and veggies should be used, as well as free-range meat. Qualities like loyalty, commitment, love and affection make it evident that we are no longer dealing with a Wolf or Dingo but rather a domesticated companion, a friend and child. Treating dogs appropriately means sufficient love and care and a diet high in nutrition. Be aware of supporting pet nutrition that is ethical and moral and that does not support animal testing. Using values to
CREATE VISION
By Dr Mark Vella
Your values are powerful influencers when creating your reality. ‘Values’ are the things that are important to us and that have worth.
I
n your value system, you will find some values are higher, and more important to you than others. When given the choice, you will always act according to your highest values. The term ‘highest values’ doesn’t mean they are the most honourable or even best for you, it just means that they have a higher priority for you, compared to those below them. You may actually have some very negative, narcissistic or self-destructive behaviours as very high values without realising you have made them important in your life. Each person has a different inventory of values, with different rankings and priority. When two people in a relationship clash it is often because fundamentally they value different things. Jane values neatness and order. She sees Tarzan who values freedom and territory, leaving his clothes all over the place. Jane gets upset. Tarzan thinks she’s overreacting. Both feel completely justified, because in their minds they have been acting according to their highest values.
40
And what we value highest, we tend to feel is right.
So how do beliefs and needs tie up? Our values shape our beliefs. Let’s say I value ambition. This shapes my beliefs that ambition is necessary for success, that people without ambition are lazy and won’t make a success of life. Our values influence our highest needs. My high value for ambition influences my highest need for significance. And how do our values shape our identity? If I value ambition, I see myself as ambitious, a go-getter as someone focused on achievement. And how do values create my future? Well given that I value ambition, I will give ambition more energy, time, space and other resources. I’ll strive for success and achievement, perhaps work harder, and be more competitive and focused.
helping you live life well
And given that we have a deep and abiding need to remain consistent with our identity, we become defined by our values. We say “He is ambitious”. What you give the most time and energy to is what you value most. It influences your beliefs, underpins your needs. And in the eyes of others, it defines you. You have two kinds of values: The values you live by now, and the values you aspire to fulfil the vision of your ideal destiny. Next month, we will walk step-by-step through transforming and birthing new beliefs, values and needs on the path to your ideal destiny. But for now, start with the little exercise on this page.

The nature of
healing Nature has many healing forces that harmonise and balance us. Living in cities tends to take away the balance that living in nature offers. When close to nature, we constantly encounter and interact with life’s primal energies of fire, earth, water and air. Because each of these energies is present in our body, it is important to connect with them in their elemental form. If you don’t have as much exposure to nature as you should, make sure you bring nature elements into your home.

EARTH
WATER
AIR
Your body needs to connect to the earth. Earth holds health-boosting energy. Lie flat on a rock or field and you instantly feel more vital. Walking barefoot on earth transfers free electrons from the earth’s surface into your body and spreads throughout your tissues. This gives your body the same negatively charged electrical potential as the earth. It’s a potent anti-oxidant and can relieve pain, help sleep patterns, reduce inflammation, and combat depression. Connect to the earth by doing some gardening, walking through the park or on the beach.
Waterfalls, lakes, rivers and the sea have high concentrations of negative ions that contribute to feelings of well-being. Spending time near water is a spiritually healthy experience. Water has life enhancing energy. If you don’t have access to any of these, compensate by having a mineral enriched bath.
Air is a fundamental element expressed by the breath. Think of how many words include the element of air in their root expression: aspire, inspire, perspire and spirit. It is seen as a universal power or pure substance. Philosopher Plato speaks about different types of air, “there is the brightest variety which we call aether, the muddiest which we call mist and darkness, and other kinds for which we have no name.” Clean, fresh air is essential to health on all levels.
TRY THIS Use a Grow Bag to inspire a gardening project. GROWbag is an outdoor planter bag made from recycled billboard skins and special wax coated polyester thread. You can use a GROWbag to plant vegetables, herbs, plants, flowers and succulents regardless of the space you have. The recycled vinyl is durable and long lasting. It is handmade in Cape Town in a job creation initiative that supports the NGO Soil for Life.
TRY THIS Prepare 2 cups of Himalayan salt, Epsom salt or 1 cup of each. Add 25 drops of your favourite aromatherapy oil or a combination if you prefer. Mix with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to moisturize. Keep in a sealed jar and use a generous amount for a mineral enriched bathing experience.
did you know? Your body is intelligently designed to co-exist as a part of nature. You are dependent on and intricately intertwined with the earth. Each time you take a breath of air or a drink of water, or absorb ultraviolet from the sun, you are connecting to the earth.

Me-time magic Make your me-time productive and enriching by crafting something creative; setting some good intentions; and supporting a good cause.
Create a mindful fragranced candle Create a fragranced candle by upcycling some old crayons and left-over candles. First collect all your old candles, one’s where the wick has burnt out or the left-over stubs. Then gather together some crayons.
YOU WILL NEED: a stick for stirring; a wax coated paper cup; a wick; some crayons; leftover candles; a microwave oven; 6 drops each of clary sage, rose and geranium aromatherapy oil; a glass votive. INSTRUCTIONS: Scrape the candle wax into your cup, enough to fill up one third of a votive. Add a coloured crayon. Microwave for one minute. Stir, then pour a thin layer into the bottom of a glass votive. Put the wick in the centre and leave the wax to harden. Fill your cup up again with a mixture of crayon and wax. Microwave for three minutes or until it has melted. Stir until the coloured crayon has been mixed in evenly. Add 6 drops each of clary sage, rose and geranium aromatherapy oil into the melted wax. Pour the melted wax into your votive keeping the wick centered in the middle. Let it harden for at least an hour before you burn it. BENEFIT: The oils in this recipe have a balancing effect on the mind and emotions. You can use the concept of ‘odour imprinting’ to make this particular smell trigger a balancing effect. While your candle is burning, meditate on beautiful, balancing thoughts. The smell will imprint this state of mind into your psyche. From now on, whenever you burn the candle you will bring on a balanced mood. Smell has a highly impressionable effect on memory. Soil Rose Geranium Essential Oil R89.99
Set an intention
When you set an intention and then act on it, amazing things happen. Intention is to have a purpose or plan in mind – to aim or direct the mind. When you have an intention, all the forces of the universe align to make even the most impossible, possible. Your intention could be to work less and make more money; to find a career you love; to get healthy; increase your fitness; go travelling; be more calm about life; or any number of things. Intention can also give you strength for dealing with challenges.
Try these four Intentional Steps: 1. Be very clear and sure about something you want. Verbalise it and then write it down. 2. Believe in your intention. 3. Take an action step towards your commitment. 4. Wear something, like a piece of jewelry, as a constant reminder of your intention. The more you think about it, the more likely it is to happen.

There is nothing more empowering than to like your own company. If you don’t already have one, develop a relationship with yourself as soon as possible. The way you do this is pretty similar to developing a relationship with someone you love, except it’s with yourself.
C
heck in with yourself regularly; start having great conversations with yourself; take yourself out on dates; find out what you are interested in; find ways to delight yourself; make yourself laugh. Many people treat themselves in a way they would never treat a friend. They don’t feed themselves properly, say awful things to themselves, are harshly unforgiving, and generally show little respect. You may have this type of relationship with yourself and not even be that aware. If you are out of touch with yourself or have lost yourself in the process of loving someone else, or if the thought of being alone is scary – start by learning to appreciate yourself and love being with you. The most invigorating way to spend time alone is to literally be solo, which means cutting yourself off from all of the busy clutter of the modern world. Here are some ideas.

SIGN UP FOR A CLASS
UNPLUG
Add purpose to your me-time by learning something new. Look for workshops, talks or courses you like. Learn a therapy technique, explore art, the piano, trufflemaking classes, a new language, become a DJ.
Have a tech free day. Once you get over the panic, you won’t believe how relaxing this can be. Let everyone know that for one day of the week you just aren’t available.
GO ON AN ADVENTURE
Leave your phone at home and go on a long hike. Choose a safe route and be sure to take your dog with or borrow a neighbour’s dog if you don’t have one. Nature will answer many of your questions about life and will uplift and soothe you.
There are so many incredible things to do in the world. Start a fund to fulfill an ambition or adventure. Go to an Ashram in India, paddle on a Mokoro through Botswana, take yourself off to Thailand or an elephant safari or a retreat. 8 TIPS TO BE NICE TO YOU >
livewell green living
If you are struggling to justify having me-time, remember this: You can’t share water from an empty glass. You need to fill yourself up before you can give anything away. PUT UP A HAMMOCK Lie in a hammock on your porch and read a good novel. Make a flask of tea and aim to finish a short story. “Alone time is when I distance myself from the voices of the world so I can hear my own.” Oprah Winfrey.
HAVE A STAY HOME VACATION Staycations (vacations in your own town) offer an interesting and fabulous take on your own city. We tend not to sightsee in our own town and touring museums, galleries and tourist attractions can be a refreshing break. You’ll get to enjoy your own company, and you might discover a fun new place to share with your family or visitors on another day.
TAKE YOURSELF OUT FOR BREAKFAST Wake up a little earlier and make time for breakfast. Eating dinner alone at a restaurant might not be that fun but a cute breakfast bar with excellent coffee is a great place to connect with yourself, people watch, read the paper or answer your emails.
LOVE YOUR ERRANDS
FIND AN EVENT Find an event you feel safe going to by yourself. Things like book launches, poetry evenings, discussion groups are good options.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT Even if you don’t have time for a full day at the Spa, treat yourself to a pedi or just get your hair washed at a Salon.
did you know? Keeping flowers in your home will brighten up your mood. A study shows that flowers can reduce feelings of pain and anxiety. It’s also shown to up creativity and increase happiness.
Make your chores less cumbersome by adding some interest and excitement. Drop your usual shopping centre and head out to a different place to shop, a farm stall or organic market. Swap the gym for a scenic cycle ride or a dance classs.
VOLUNTEER Take time out by volunteering to a charity. Manning a soup kitchen or working at a Charity shop can be rewarding and fulfilling as well as taking you away from your normal routine and giving you perspective on how fortunate and blessed you are.
HEADPHONES ON, WORLD OFF
BE NICE TO YOU If you haven’t been a great friend to yourself, here are some practices you can follow to start a new, improved relationship.
SAY NO Learn to say no. Don’t stretch yourself too thin. You don’t always have to go out for drinks when you’re tired, or take on other people’s stuff when you’re swamped. No can be such a relaxing word to practice.
NURTURE YOURSELF Cook for yourself like you would cook for someone you love. Create yourself the best meal ever. Serve yourself tea in a pot and on a tray. Run yourself a bath with candles and fragrances.
CHAT YOURSELF UP We all have a voice in our heads. Often that voice is judgemental and critical. Watch how many times you say discouraging things. Replace them with inspiring and encouraging alternatives. Speak to yourself with compassion. Rather than telling yourself you’re not good enough, be positive and remind yourself you are worthy of love and attention, or that it’s okay to make mistakes.
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS It’s true that happiness is guaranteed to people who can acknowledge and recognize their blessings. Practicing gratitude is a way to focus on hope, to be inspired, to feel lucky and be optimistic.
STRIKE A POWER POSE According to neuroscientist Amy Cuddy, you can demonstrate power and confidence simply by changing the way you hold your body. Take a deep breath, extend your spine, fill your space and you will feel more confident and happier. A slouchy posture sends defeatist messages to your brain.
SPREAD A GOOD VIBE
Tune out. Wear headphones to tune out distractions. Co-workers and friends are less likely to interrupt if you can’t hear them.
Happiness and enthusiasm are contagious. When you come into contact with others, be interested and positive. It’s an effective way of influencing others.
DATE WITH YOURSELF

Dump your worries Worrying depletes you and makes you stressed. It’s the nasty side-effect of too much thinking. If you worry a lot, make a practice of dumping your thoughts onto a daily worry list. Ester-C速 is a buffered, non-acidic and well absorbed form of Vitamin C that is gentle on the stomach. Unlike ordinary vitamin C, Ester-C速 contains the essential mineral calcium and naturally occurring vitamin C metabolites, such as threonate. Threonate aids absorption, making Ester-C速 easy for the body to use. This means that when Ester-C速 ascorbate enters the blood stream, it goes to work immediately, so vital vitamin C is quickly available to meet demands.

DIY BIRD CAFE
Engage children’s interest in the natural world by making a winter Bird Café in your garden or on your patio. It’s easy to attract birds with a feeder hung in the right place. You can buy a readymade one or alternatively, make your own. Follow our DIY instructions and at the same time, introduce the concept of recycling to kids.
DIY BIRD FEEDER MATERIALS REQUIRED: 5 empty toilet paper rolls 1 jar Peanut butter 1 packet of birdseed Glue String 2 x twigs or dall sticks 1. Spread peanut butter over the toilet rolls; you can do this the same way you spread peanut butter onto a piece of bread using a knife.
52
2. Turn each roll over a bowl of birdseed until you have a nice layer of seed stuck to the roll. 3. Take two lengths of dal stick or twigs from the garden and glue them together in the shape of a cross to make a mobile. 4. Tie a piece of string in the middle where the cross is. Use this to hang your mobile up. 5. Put a dab of glue onto each of the sticks where you want the rolls to be. 6. Put the rolls over the glue on each side and secure them until the glue dries. Your mobile bird feeder is ready to be hung in the garden. everything you need to live life well
TIP IF YOU DON’T WANT TO USE TOILET ROLLS, TRY ADDING PEANUT BUTTER TO PINE CONES AND SPRINKLING THE SEED BETWEEN THE CONES

Make your garden bird-friendly Plan your garden to intentionally attract birds. You will get immense pleasure from bird watching. Here are some tips from Starke Ayres to make your garden bird-friendly. 1. Choose the right plants Plant an assortment of plant species that provide food throughout the year, like seeds, berries and nuts. Deciduous plants (whose leaves drop off in winter) usually bear the most fruit, nuts, and seeds. They also offer shady, leafy nesting sites in spring and summer. Evergreen plants (with leaves throughout the year) are a good source of berries and seed-filled cones, as well as year-round shelter, protection, and breeding sites. 2. Go organic Organic gardening is essential to provide a landscape that welcomes birds. For starters it will allow a variety of insects and other organisms that birds love. Organic gardening brings the ecosystem into a healthy balance. 3. Leave out pesticides Birds naturally control garden pests and insects, like gnats and mosquitoes. Rather than using chemicals to get rid of pests, do it naturally with birds. Pesticides tend to get rid of all insects and leave nothing for the insectivorous birds. Importantly, birds that eat poisoned insects are at great risk. 4. Choose indigenous Indigenous plants minimize the need for pesticides – they are generally resistant
to local pests and diseases. They are also familiar and accepted as food sources, shelter, and nest sites by the indigenous birdlife. Their fruits and berries are nutritious, and they ripen in synch with nesting and migration times of the birds.
TIP
Here are some ideas of what to provide for your garden birds: • • • •
RATHER THAN REMOVING THE DEAD HEADS OF FLOWERS, LEAVE THEM IN THE GARDEN SO BIRDS CAN EAT THE SEEDS
•
5. Add water Create a birdbath. Use a vessel that allows for a shallow depth of still water. Put stones in so smaller birds have somewhere to land. A rough surface is ideal so birds can have a steady footing. If your surface is slippery, add sand, stones or pebbles. Put the birdbath in a sunny position and in a fairly clear space, birds won’t feel comfortable bathing if a cat might be looming above them in a tree. Ponds, garden streams or water features also work very well. The sound of water is calming to us and also to the birds.
TIP IF YOU HAVE A CAT THAT HUNTS BIRDS, PUT A WARNING BELL ON HIS OR HER COLLAR SO BIRDS HAVE TIME TO MAKE AN ESCAPE.
6. Provide protective cover Birds usually keep close to well-covered areas for protection, both from the weather and from predators. Dense plants also help shelter roosting birds.
ON THE MENU
Make sure you have bird food available to guarantee all year-round bird watching.

A trip to Bushmans Kloof is the fastest way to remove all traces of city angst.
Giant earth hug
Even before we turned onto the dirt road after Clanwilliam, the Cedarberg began a bewitching seduction. We left Cape Town later than expected and were racing to get to Bushmans Kloof before the gates closed. But suddenly we saw a giant moon rising up from the mountains and we couldn’t resist stopping to watch it.
did you know? Bushmans Kloof has been declared a South African Natural Heritage Site within the Cape Floral kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They have a deep commitment to conservation and to give back and are passionate about the protection and reintroduction of indigenous species.

lthough it was almost dark the moon outlined sweeping sandstone formations interrupting the landscape along the way. After chatting solidly during the whole trip, suddenly we were all dead quiet. Our landscape had turned into a spectacular show and we watched in silence.
A trip to Bushmans Kloof is the fastest way to remove all traces of city angst. The energy of a 500 million year-old mountain range is like a giant earth hug. It’s mystical, majestic and at the same time incredibly grounding. This is a place you visit with all your heart. helping you live life well
Bushman’s Kloof is a private reserve about 2 ½ hours out of Cape Town surrounded by a magical wilderness set on ley lines coursing with ancient energy. It’s where Bushmen used to live, and you can walk in their footsteps along a path and visit caves decorated with paintings from long ago.

Well, that’s if you can leave your room. Imagine a luxurious stand-alone suite with a sweeping view, a cosy fire-place, couches that swallow you and inspired décor designed with natural materials. Tucked away discreetly for those that can’t quite disconnect, there is access to satellite television, wireless connection, DVD’s and an iPod docking station. A compelling collection of books, fragranced candles in the bathroom, heated towel rails, sumptuous gowns, pure cotton bed-linen and countless surprises (even a yoga mat!) set the scene for cathartic relaxation.
the breakfast area is a mini forest of the most unusual towering bearded trees. Just from a nature point of view there is so much to take in. It’s a real four element experience; the wind dancing through the reeds; fires in rooms and dining areas; water from the jeweled infinity pools and grounding earth.
Then comes the dilemma. Bury the world and carry on sleeping (there is so much earth energy and fresh air, sleeping more is so tempting); head off to the crystal steam room at the Spa; schedule a massage in the riverside gazebo; explore the crystalline infinity pools; hike to the bushman caves and delve into the folklore of an ancient spirit world. Then there’s also the Heritage Centre with exhibits, photographs and talks about the Bushmen and a medicinal herb garden revealing botanical remedies used by the Bushman and Khoi. My advice is: save yourself the stress of having to choose between activities and make sure you book at least two full days.
There is so much to say about Bushmans Kloof, the service is incredible, the food outstanding and the surrounds truly magical. The best advice I can give is to go there and see for yourself. Expect to emerge feeling deeply nourished and highly inspired.
From the Spa I chose the Bushmans Kloof signature massage. This took place in a gazebo overlooking a wetland area. Big glass windows brought the outside in. It was pure heady intoxication and left me feeling completely de-stressed.
An organic garden provides fresh produce for gourmet meals and high tea. Romantic picnics or braais can also be arranged.
The Spa includes soothing, pampering and therapeutic treatments using Elemis, Dermalogica and their own signature B | Africa product range. Bushmans Kloof is the custodian of over 130 unique rock art sites, some as old as 10,000 years.

FACT FILE Bushmans Kloof is 270 km from Cape Town and takes 2 ½ to 3 hours driving time. They have a range of accommodation options and can house 34 people, including a private villa, which can take up to 10 guests.
But first there was breakfast. This was served in an open-air dining platform with a beautiful view of wetland ducks and the sound of baboons on the rock cliffs nearby. Forget how old you are “Forget how old you are,” is Shirley Kaplan’s advice to anyone over 50. “
The other day I went up the mountain with a guy who is 81. He has a Harley Davidson and runs a sailing academy, yet people who regard themselves as old, just don’t do things like that,” says Shirley who challenges the mainstream notion of what ‘old’ means. “So often people say I’m too old to do this or that but it’s not true. I have proven it.” Having a penchant for the mountains and the outdoors, Shirley was delighted when she moved to Cape Town with her husband in the early years of their marriage. Hiking is something she does on an almost daily basis. In fact, exercise is what she attributes her enthusiasm and youth to.
“It’s like a religion, I cannot do anything until I have exercised. That is what has kept me going.” Shirley believes it should be everyone’s priority to exercise and keep supple. She has set an example that has infected her children and grandchildren (she has three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren); all of them head into nature on a regular basis. Growing up consisted of camping and hiking. “We didn’t have a lot of money but would head off to Muizenberg and stay in a caravan during holidays so we could rent our house out. With the money we made
from this we would go overseas. We went sailing in Greece, we went to China and walked the great wall; we went to Morocco and slept in the desert. We skied in the mountains. Our lifestyle was proof that you can still have children, run a business and go on adventures. I would love to see more people do it”, says Shirley. Talking about how old you are and how creaky your joints are doesn’t cut it for the energetic 82 year-old who swears by keeping your bones strong with weight training. Twice a week she heads off to the Kranking Fitness Studio and lifts 4kgs per arm. It’s exceptionally good for older people. Luckily we have one kranking gym in Cape Town.
Besides camping and running up mountains Shirley has an amazing career in the Interior Design World. She started at a time when interior design didn’t exist as a profession. Many milestones and accolades are attributed to Shirley in the Interior Design world, including being the first person to import tiles into the country. If you need inspiration to not fear ageing follow Shirley’s example and simply ‘forget how old you are’.

Add more reading time into your child’s life. You don’t necessarily have to sit down and read to them; here are some tips to increase your kids literary skills through reading - especially if they are too restless to stay still.

1. Add some activity After reading a page, get kids to act out the page and expend some of their energy. Pretending to be a certain animal or moving body parts with books that focus on the body works well.
BENEFITS OF READING TO KIDS •
The quiet together time you spend reading will help you bond and can become a nurturing time that many kids hold as a favourite childhood memory.
When kids are involved with eating a meal, this can be a good time to balance a book behind their bowl and read a few pages.
•
Studies show students exposed to reading before school or preschool show a higher aptitude for learning and are more likely to do well in all aspects of their education.
3. Precis the page
•
If the book has long passages of text, rather than read it all, point to the pictures and describe what’s happening. This will still help to build on their learning skills.
Reading, and phonetic variation teaches critical enunciation skills. Children learn to listen and naturally feel out different sounds helping them master basic speech skills.
•
By watching caregivers read to them kids pick up basic things like reading from left to right, and that images are separate from text.
•
Kids learn how interactions between people and animals work through stories. Stories often have valuable lessons to teach them.
•
The act of sitting still and listening teaches focus, discipline and better memory retention.
2. Read during mealtime
4. Appeal to their interests If your child is mad about the colour pink or loves trucks and cars, find a book that features his or her interest. This is likely to engage them more intently.
5. Repetition Kids love repetition. Get them to repeat sentences after you read them. You will find they easily learn things off by heart and love identifying them over again.
6. Find interactive books Books that encourage kids to feel different textures or lift flaps will help restless kids zone in and focus.
7. Choose quiet times When kids have calmed down and are ready for bed or when they have just woken up they will tend to be more calm. This is a great time to fit in a few minutes of reading.
8. Vary your voice Making sounds effects or singing through sentences is often more entertaining to kids. If they find you funny, they are more likely to participate.
9. Read the signs Rather than restricting reading to books point out road signs or packaging labels and read them. Even if it’s one word on a billboard you will be contributing to your child’s ability to identify shapes with sound.
did you know? Reading aloud to your child is the single most important thing you can do to promote their literacy.

The Earthchild Project is a local NGO who offer holistic education to under-resourced schools with a focus on the environment, health and self-development. Their aim is to give children practical skills for life and their programmes compliment the school curriculum. Activities include gardening, worm farming, hiking, healthy living, yoga and meditation. They are currently working with over 2000 children, creating a new generation of conscious young leaders. Why does Earthchild Project teach children yoga? We all know that there are many physical, emotional, mental and spiritual benefits to a regular yoga practice. However, after seven years of teaching thousands of children, we are seeing another powerful way yoga is impacting their lives… For many of the children in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill, their weekly yoga class is the only access they have to a safe, nurturing and supportive space. This gives them an opportunity to connect deeply with themselves and cultivate a real sense of self confidence and awareness. In addition, for many of these children, their Earthchild yoga teacher is the only person who tells them they believe in them and encourages them to dream big. The safe space to connect deeply, together with a positive role model who believes in

We all want healthy, glowing skin. Does that have to mean slathering on harsh chemicals, though? We asked three of our WellSkin skin experts how to get glowing, healthy, skin without doing any harm – to yourself or the planet.
Lauren, somatologist
What’s your number one natural skincare tip?
What’s the question you’re asked most often by clients?
The best way to get healthy skin is to use the right products prescribed by a skincare specialist. It’s important to take care of your skin from the inside, too. Always take a multivitamin, Omega-3s, and supplement with an antioxidant to combat free radical damage that can cause ageing. This will keep your skin looking great.
Clients want to know whether products are tested on animals. They are often concerned about the environment and I’m proud to say Wellness Warehouse supports products that are earth- and animal-friendly.

Its main ingredient is the tonka bean and it illuminates the skin naturally. The entire Radiance range is a great pick-me-up for dull skin.

Zaahida, skincare therapist What makes you truly beautiful? If you feel healthy and vibrant, your skin will reflect it. If you feel balanced in your mind and body, your skin will feel balanced, too. This will give you a beautiful, healthy glow.
What’s the question you’re asked most often by clients?
What’s your number one natural skincare tip? Make sure you always cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise, and tone (if you need or prefer to) with products of natural origin. Choosing pure and natural products will help nourish your skin without doing any harm. Harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils.
Clients often ask me what the best skincare range is and how it will improve the health of their skin. I believe in natural skincare so my advice is to look for products that are, in particular, free from parabens. This will help them boost, repair and improve their skin without harm.
What natural beauty product can’t you live without? Nourish is a beautiful skincare range that’s naturally organic and extracted from the most natural ingredients possible. Because I have very sensitive skin, finding the right
products can be a challenge. Nothing has calmed and soothed my skin like Nourish’s Relax range.

What makes you truly beautiful? The most beautiful people I have ever met are happy and full of love and life. Beauty is a glow that comes from the inside.
What’s the question you’re asked most often by clients? My clients are concerned about ageing. I tell them to stick with natural skincare and to take care of their health. Eating well is also very important.
What’s your number one natural skincare tip?
What natural beauty product can’t you live without?
Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and get plenty of rest. I can see immediately if my clients are tired and dehydrated. Once you’ve taken care of those basics, make sure you cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturise (especially in winter!). Also, always wear sunscreen – there are some great natural brands out there.
I couldn’t live without Dr Hauschka. I used to have trouble with oily skin until I had a Dr Hauschka facial and I never looked back. My favourite product is the Normalizing Day Oil. People tend to be afraid of using oils, but there’s one for almost every client.
According to Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley, authors of The AntiAgeing Beauty Bible, acupuncture is an excellent natural anti-ager. They say it lifts the eyes, removes puffiness, improves dry skin and may even stimulate collagen production by improving blood flow. promotions WE TRIED IT Everyone has been talking about the Wellbalanced Signature Treatment from the Wellskin Spa at Wellness Wellness Warehouse so we thought it was high time we tried it out. We sent Rouxmia Bougas to report.
Wellbalanced – Wellskin Signature Treatment R510 (Kloof street and Cavendish Stores) With our cold and wet Cape Town weather, your skin gets dehydrated, your lips get dry. Your feet get squashed into thick socks and boots, and constantly trying to keep warm makes your muscles achey. As much as I love winter, my body takes strain, and so does my mood. The Wellbalanced treatment couldn’t have come at a better time. Two hours of absolute me-time includes a 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage with grape seed oil; a choice of a full pedicure and mini facial or the other way around, full facial and mini pedicure.

The Scalp massage drained all the tension from my body and I actually dozed off for about 10 minutes. I chose the full facial option. That meant a choice between 4 different brands: Environ, Esse, Dermalogica or Juice Beauty. I went with Juice Beauty - I am a huge fan of their products. I always believe don’t put on your skin, what you won’t put in your mouth and they are a great chemical free brand. First I had a deep cleanse, then a steam to open up the pores. This was followed by an exfoliator and ended off with an Organic Facial Rejuvenating mask from Juice Beauty. After this hugely relaxing process, it ends off with a pedicure. The foot massage was well needed! Feeling pampered and happy again, I am ready to take on the winter weather again. Take advantage of this good value package at the Wellskin Spa’s available from the Kloof street branch and Cavendish branch. Tel: 021 487 5420 for Kloof and 021 673 7200.

A few things you didn’t know about...
Vegetarian protein
Which has more protein – egg whites or almonds? If you picked egg whites you might be surprised to know that, portion for portion, almonds are the winners in the protein stakes. Read on for the details, as well as four more things you didn’t know about protein.
One portion of almonds (28g) has 6.2g of protein, while one large egg (counting as one portion) has 5g of protein. Another surprising winner in the protein stakes is low-fat Greek yoghurt, which beats roast beef. One-and-a-half cups of Greek yoghurt has 18g of protein vs. 14g of protein in 50g of roast beef.
When it comes to protein, quantity isn’t everything. Protein is made up of building blocks called amino acids. There are nine of these that the body can’t produce: the essential amino acids. Eggs, dairy, meat, fish, and poultry contain all of the essential amino acids and are considered sources of ‘complete protein’.
The human body is made up of about 100,000 different types of protein. The body needs protein to grow, heal, and carry about nearly every chemical reaction in the body. It’s possible to get all the protein you need on a vegetarian diet.
If you’re looking for a vegan protein boost, try superfoods. Hemp and chia seeds are both considered sources of complete protein, while spirulina is also a good source of vitamins and minerals including calcium. Add them, powdered, to juices and smoothies.
www.wellnesswarehouse.com
Pumpkin seeds have 33g of protein per 100g serving. There are 24g of protein in 100g of cashew nuts and around 20g in 100g of almonds. Pick your snacks carefully, though – 100g (a cup) is a lot of pumpkin seeds to get through!
