Healthy living is a way of life for me. I look and feel my best when I am eating healthy wholesome foods, and training at least 4 times a week. I believe a diet should be balanced and include the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, dairy and fats. Although I never deprive myself of any food type it’s all about finding a balance and eating the right amounts of each food group. Working out and staying fit is something I love, especially with cardio and weight training. Currently I’m studying nutrition and fitness and would love to go into the fitness industry to inspire others to lead a healthy lifestyle.

THE POWER OF ORANGE It’s odd to wipe toxic chemicals all over your oven, floors, counters, and toilets in order to get them “clean,” but that’s just what the majority of us do with conventional cleaners. Advertisers spent billions in 2011 to entice shoppers to buy more and more stuff. So it’s not surprising that our homes are full of things we don’t even use — or like. This stuff just so happens to be where a lot of toxic chemicals lurk. It’s the small changes that make the big differences over time. Cleaning products are necessary for maintaining attractive and healthful conditions in the home and workplace. In addition to the obvious aesthetic benefits of cleaning, the removal of dust, allergens, and infectious agents is crucial to maintaining a healthful indoor environment. When considering natural cleaning in your home or office you should be thinking orange. Triple Orange are eco-friendly products that simplifies your life by providing you with a non-toxic solution to all your cleaning requirements. With Triple Orange Wonder Gel doing all the hard work of cleaning and Triple Orange Bio-Det taking care of your laundry, you only need two things: •
Wonder Gel is an all-purpose cleaning gel that will clean your entire home, from windows to floors, dishes to bathrooms. Highly concentrated, dilute it with water and 1 tub lasts for ages.
•
Bio-Det: a laundry soap (hot or cold water) machine or hand-wash. The combination of ingredients is gentle on your fabrics and will leave your clothing soft and smelling citrus fresh Orange oil is the main ingredient, aside from the therapeutic benefits of orange oil it is also a powerful degreaser. Extracted from the peel of the sweet orange, orange oil breaks down grease naturally. Triple Orange products are pet friendly and eco-friendly, have not been tested on animals are biodegradable and formulated with, naturally derived ingredients that are hypoallergic and since oranges grow on trees are a renewable resource.
Save our planet, it’s the only one with oranges!

WE TRIED IT IT’S ALL IN THE VIBRATION It’s a wonderful experience when you meet someone who is so passionate about her work. Linda Bennett has energy that’s catchy. It’s no wonder when her vocation is tied up in energy transfer. Trace Therapy might sound a little unfamiliar to most but when you experience it and feel the results, it doesn’t really matter. Trace stands for ‘Therapeutic Relief Amplified C-fibre Energy’ it basically means transferring healing energy from one source to another. It’s a drug free medical technology that heals and relieves a wide range of illnesses, injuries and defects - both acute and chronic. After having chronic back pain for fifteen years, and finally discovering something that gave her relief, Linda was so delighted, she made it her career and opened a practice in Sea Point, Cape Town. You don’t have to have any particular presenting ailments to benefit from a treatment. When I tried it out I didn’t have any real complaints except the occasional bout of insomnia but left there feeling so completely relaxed and amazing and I had an incredible sleep that night. Trace is in a beautiful space with a modern contemporary feel that’s very calming. Patients will generally lie on a therapy bed while treatment is administered. It’s not sore, nor invasive and has far reaching effects with all types of injuries and especially good for pain. Apparently people bent over in pain literally walk out feeling substantially different afterwards. “We have an electrical current in the human body”, says Linda, “that balances sodium and potassium in every cell.” An imbalance in the body’s chemical actions results in disease. The intensity of disease or damage accords with the degree of depletion and spasm of the magnetic field. As the magnetic field depletes, the nerves are partially starved of their fuel or energy. Machines like the Scenar and Bemer machine offer a higher energy frequency, one that the body loves. In addition to the machines, the therapists also transfer energy through their hands. “When you consciously concentrate on the energy levels and transferring energy to the other person, you open doors for healing to take place. The power of the brain is far more powerful in terms of healing than any drug.” Negative states may be removed immediately or the process may take time. It usually takes a while for the field to stabilize and hold a higher frequency. EDITOR’S CHOICE
Relax, nothing is under control “One of the strongest motivations driving human behaviour is our need for control. Perhaps the word ‘control’ is just another word for security - it plays a central role in our day to day existence, it determines our level of mental peace and dictates how anxious, depressed or angry we become as we deal with daily challenges.” Douglas Craig, practicing psychologist. Let go of the need to control and you let go of a huge amount of anxiety, stress and worry. Release determined outcomes, prepare to embrace whatever happens, and life will feel much easier.

Incense is more purposeful than simply making a space smell good. It helps to develop a state of awareness. It’s used in many spiritual traditions. Monks recognized the benefit of incense long ago and used it during meditation to clear the air and their thoughts. We’re always delighted when Dr Hauschka brings out a new product. Although in favour of moisturisers during the day, the Dr Hauschka philosophy is that once the sun sets, your skin is biologically programmed to perform its natural nighttime functions of self-cleansing, balancing oil production and cellular renewal. That’s why the night serum is formulated not to interfere with this process but to stimulate, refresh and balance the skin while supporting the skin’s night-time renewal processes. I’m totally convinced, the serum left my skin feeling amazing. Dr Hauschka Night Regenerating Serum R998

Sip Some Solace
Tranquini is such an exciting new drink, and provides a refreshing new option to the ‘energy drink’. It’s part of the new generation of relaxation beverages (Oh, why did it take so long?) and chills you out substantially. No drugs are involved, it’s natural and has ingredients like chamomile, lavender, rosehip and a component from green tea (not the caffeine part) that relaxes, calms and makes you noticeably less stressed. After a sip it was difficult to place the taste, it has an almost root beer kind of flavour or is it more like rose, I’m still not sure but I do know I’m going to have another one. Yum. Tranquini R24,99
Beat The Blues
Honeybush tea has a lovely full flavour and it’s now available in combination with Sceletium. Together they deliver a powerful brew that’s calming, full of antioxidants and nutrients, low in tannin, is caffeine free and also acts as a stress reliever, stopping hunger craving and inhibiting fat accumulation. Honeybush has a natural slightly sweet taste so if you’re off sugar and sweeteners, it’s a great beverage option. Sceletia honeybush tea R47,99

WHY SOUP? Soup is a great way to add more veggies to your diet. But all soups are not created equal. Soups that aren’t homemade often contain artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. Wellness winter soups are made with fresh, hearty and good-for-you ingredients that add essential vitamins and minerals to your diet with every mouthful.
Banters choose Bacon & Broc Our Bacon and Broccoli soup is perfect for banters. Broccoli is very low in carbs and the bacon in the soup is a good source of fat and protein. Of course, it’s also very tasty. To give

you an idea of how good for you broccoli is, just one cup gives you all the vitamin C you need in a day. Great for winter. Broccoli is also a source of folate, a B vitamin that many people lack and which is especially important for pregnant women.
Sweet Potato & Peanut for the veggies Wellness Sweet Potato and Peanut soup is vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and very nourishing but far lower in carbs than ‘normal’ white potatoes. They’re also full of the antioxidant beta carotene. Peanuts are a
good source of protein and healthy vegetable fats that are also filling, making this a very hearty and comforting soup.
Everyone loves Spicy Mexican Beans are high in fibre and protein. They lend themselves to spiciness, making Wellness Spicy Mexican Soup an irresistible meal on a winter’s day. This soup is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Beans are also on the menu for some low-carb eating plans, so this one is an overall winner.

TREE OF LIFE
ARGAN OIL RANGE
ARGAN OIL is a multi-tasking miracle moisturizer that’s organically grown and naturally chemicalfree. As one of the most rare oils in the world, it’s earned the nickname, ‘liquid gold’. The high natural content of Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants provide extensive benefits to hair, body, nails and skin including treating skin conditions. IN THE BEGINNING Dèhan Lombard, founder and brand owner of TREE OF LIFE tells the story: Three and a half years ago I was introduced to Argan Oil by family of mine who stumbled across it in Europe and started importing the pure oil. It was such an incredible product, they felt it simply had to be introduced to the South African market. Everyone was tied up in various businesses but I was inbetween projects with more time on my hands. Having used the oil for a couple of weeks I was already witness to the amazing benefits it offered. It was summer in Cape Town, so I jumped onto my Vespa and started planting stock in every possible health shop, pharmacy, hair dresser and Spa I could come across. In no time sales started rocketing and the feedback from users was incredible. Since then, we’ve expanded the range to include specially formulated products to target face, hair and body. It comes in a 100% natural form using only organic and natural ingredients. Today, thanks to the great partnership formed between WELLNESS

WAREHOUSE & TREE OF LIFE, the TREE OF LIFE PURE ORGANIC ARGAN OIL is the top selling product in the Beauty Department!
NAMING OUR BRAND Every community has a TREE OF LIFE, which is the source of their livelihood. The Argania Spinosa tree is the TREE OF LIFE of the Berber tribe in Morocco. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate brand name for such an amazing product with its amazing background story. That’s how TREE OF LIFE was born. I registered the trade mark and it literally grew itself to adulthood through the honesty and integrity of the product.
FINDING THE SOURCE For generations the Berber people have used Argan wood for fuel and as building material with the leaves and pulp given to goats as food. In the semi-desert Sous valley of South-Western Morocco, in an area of about 8,000 hectares the Argan tree protects the area from erosion and helping you live life well
an advancing Sahara desert. Although full of prickly leaves and thorny branches it has deep root systems that makes it hardy and drought resistant. It reaches about ten metres high and lives up to 200 years. Of utmost value though is the fruit. Firstly it has a thick, bitter peel, then a sweetly fragranced pulp. Inside is a hard nut with kernels containing oil. Because the tree is only available in this region the oil is rare and coveted for its high content of vitamin A, E and essential fatty acids. Slightly darker than olive oil, Argan oil has a delicate hazelnut taste and unique cosmetic, medicinal and culinary properties.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPORTANCE UNESCO (The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognised the importance of the Argan tree in 1998 and declared the SouthWestern region of Morocco a Biosphere Reserve.
lookwell
PRODUCTION Argan oil requires extensive labour. Moroccan Berber use the same method they have for centuries. They collect the fruit and crack open the nut (said to have the hardest shell ever recorded) using two stones. Machines designed for this purpose haven’t been very successful and the traditional way remains the most effective. Once removed they’re crushed and pounded in a handmade mill called an azerg which results in a paste. This is kneaded and pressed by hand to extract the oil. It takes about twenty kilograms of Argan fruit and nearly twenty hours of labour to produce one litre of Argan oil.
NIGHT-TIME MOISTURIZER, LIP BALM & EYE CARE As a night time moisturiser, clean your skin, pour a single drop into your palm to warm and apply to face and neck in a circular motion. Argan oil absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave an oily residue. Use on lips to heal dryness and keep smooth and soft. Argan oil is an effective all-over body moisturiser. Add a drop to your standard moisturiser. For eye care add a drop to your face, using a tapping motion from the bridge of the nose to the temple, and back again. Then apply a drop beneath your eyes with the same gentle tapping. Vitamin A and E helps reduce fine wrinkles and keep this delicate area moisturised and squalene maintains suppleness of the skin.
Steve Photography / Shutterstock.com
LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER & STYLING Argan oil is non-greasy and helps prevent split ends, tames frizz and fly-away hair, protects against heat treatment and adds body and shine. Depending on thickness and length of your hair, use between 1 and 3 drops. Warm the oil in your palms before working through your hair. Pay special attention to your ends and massage into scalp (also good for hair growth). Rub any excess into your face, neck or hands. As a deep conditioning treatment, massage thoroughly through hair and scalp and leave in overnight.
OUR BRAND Tree of Life stands for honesty, integrity and quality. Our pure Argan oil is organically certified by Ecocert and is 100% pure and undiluted. The Tree of Life range is 100% naturally formulated and consists entirely of natural and organic ingredients.
RESPONSIBILTY We support the non-profit organisation Thembakazi Teens by helping Wendy Pumile, (responsible for client service and logistics for Tree of Life) and making funds available. The organisation equips teenagers with life skills that prepare them for adulthood. Counselling spans issues like safe sex, avoiding drugs and gang involvement and making the right choices for a happy, safe and fulfilling life. The target group is mainly young girls aged 14-19.
Argan oil is also effective for acne, eczema and psoriasis, stretch marks, razor bumps and burn, nails, dry feet and heels.
Dèhan Lombard & Wendy Pumile
BENEFITS OF ARGAN OIL People commonly use Argan oil to treat skin infections including itching, burning and rashes, eczema and psoriasis, as well as insect bites. It’s also popularly used as a moisturizer for skin and hair. Its attributes are a high vitamin A and E content, abundance of anti-oxidants, Omega-6 fatty acids, and linoleic acid that also eases inflammation. Tocopherol from vitamin E helps boost cell production and is one reason that cosmetic companies use it in high-end anti-aging, hair, and skin care products. Rather than spend money on expensive products you can simply add the oil to your beauty products, a drop or two provides extenstive nourishment for hair and skin.

Our range spans quality products in both hair and skin care. For more information on individual products log onto our website at www.treeoflifehealth.co.za

CHOOSE A BASE Decide on your base ingredient, the one that’s going to make you feel satisfied and fulfilled. This could be Quinoa, Chickpeas, Amaranth, Buckwheat, Bulgar, Dahl or Lentils.
ADD SOME VEGGIES Choose about three different veggies like Spinach, Brussel Sprouts, Beetroot, Sweet Potato, Parsnip, Kale, Butternut, Broccoli and Cauliflower. You can roast them, steam them or some of them can be chopped up and used raw.
DRY ROAST SEEDS Take a few handfuls of seeds like sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, linseed and dry roast them on the stove top. If you are roasting them all together, space your timing so they end up roasted at the same time. First the pumpkin, then sunflower and sesame last.
BRING IT TO LIFE Have an assortment of shoots and sprouts available. You can sprout seeds yourself. Alfalfa, mung bean, chickpea and kohlrabi all make delicious sprouts. Sunflower seeds need to be planted in soil but they make incredibly delicious shoots. If sprouts are hard for you to access, used chopped parsley instead.
Once you have all your ingredients ready, put your bowl together by spooning a little of each ingredient starting with the base, then the veggies, then seeds, greens and dressing. Using this formula you can make a different meal every day by swapping out your ingredients.
GREEN AVO DRESSING VEGETARIAN YIELD: Enough for 3 generous servings
INGREDIENTS 1 AVOCADO 1 LIME SQUEEZED INTO JUICE 1 TBSP RED WINE VINEGAR 1 TBSP OLIVE OIL 1 GARLIC CLOVE CHOPPED 1 TBSP HONEY ¼ TSP CUMIN ¼ TSP CAYENNE (THIS WILL MAKE IT SPICIER AND IS OPTIONAL) ¼ CUP OF WATER SALT OR SEASONING
Put all your ingredients in a blender until well blended. Use generously over your Buddha bowl.
DRIZZLE ON FLAVOUR Make your own sauces to enhance your dish. You can use macadamia nut butter blended with Mac oil or olive oil and a touch of honey. Basil and tomato pesto is especially good with quinoa. Tahini is a comforting and delicious taste. Yoghurt and cucumber with a touch of garlic makes a great Tsatsiki. Nut butters blended with spices or garlic are also excellent. Or try out some Green Avo Dressing (recipe adjacent).
did you know? You can make candied chickpeas by drizzling honey on them and putting them in an already hot oven. The honey caramelizes and the chickpeas end up with a candied shell so delicious.
JUST WHEY Whey protein powder can be used as a protein alternative or supplement by lacto-vegetarians, sports people and convalescents, as it is a complete protein which is easy to digest.

Hungry Dragon Crunch By Roxanne Haywood
Eating a Banting diet, (unrefined food that’s unprocessed, packed with minerals, nutrients, fat and low in carbohydrates), means a body that’s sustained by healthy nutrients, and stays fuller for longer. It also means you are unlikely to call for any ‘in between’ snacks. Having said that, if you happen to miss out on a meal you can be well prepared with a guilt-free Banting friendly snack that’s highly nutritious and big on taste.
M
aking your own snacks cuts out unhealthy chemicals and artificial flavourings usually present in storebought snacks. What’s more you can add ingredients like spices, raw cocoa and tumeric to give them an extra healthy boost. When roasting your own nuts or seeds, use coconut or macadamia nut oil rather than olive oil (which turns rancid under high heat) or vegetable oils (that cause inflammation and other health issues).

Warm water with freshly squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of honey first thing in the morning helps detoxify the body and boost metabolism.
CLEANING THE COLON by Dr Roshan Hendricks
When it’s not functioning properly, the colon starts absorbing toxins instead of eliminating them causing problems like headaches, mental confusion, depression, irritability, bloating, constipation, gas, weight gain, low energy, fatigue and allergic reactions like hives. It can also lead to other more chronic illnesses.
M
ost food we eat today is loaded with additives, preservatives and chemicals. These are difficult for the body to digest and create a build up of mucous in the colon, producing toxins that poison the body.
did you know? A healthy bowel is paramount to a healthy body; when it’s clean and in a healthy condition, our other organs are, as a rule, healthy.
26
Colon cleansing can get rid of harmful toxins; promote healthy intestinal bacteria and improve the body’s absorption of vitamins and nutrients, it can also increase energy levels. Many cleansing regimes are available but the best options are usually simple, natural, home and herbal remedies, with no side effects.
FOLLOWING THE COLON THROUGH THE BODY After food passes through your stomach and small intestine, what’s left is mainly liquid waste. This waste progresses to your colon. Your colon is nearly two metres long and begins at the cecum, the lower right hand corner of your abdomen. Attached to the cecum is the appendix, which looks like a worm-shaped tube. The colon goes up along the right side of the abdomen (ascending colon) and travels up to the ribs (just below the liver), from there it makes a left turn across the abdomen (transverse helping you live life well
colon). When it reaches the lower ribs on the left side it turns and goes down (descending colon). Once more it turns to the middle of the lower abdomen and forms an s shape (sigmoid colon). Here, waste material is emptied into the rectum, which stores the waste until contractions in the large intestine encourage a bowel movement.

5 Tips for a clean and healthy colon
3. Fruits and vegetables
1. Water – the magical potion
For a clean and healthy colon, the best thing you can do is drink plenty of water. Eight to ten glasses a day is essential, even if you are not thirsty. Regular consumption provides the lubrication needed to flush out harmful toxins and waste and stimulate natural peristaltic action, helping food move through the digestive system. Water is essential for hydration and to keep organs functioning properly. Along with water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, coconut water, and liquid foods are also good. TIP: Have warm water with freshly squeezed lemon and a teaspoon of honey first thing in the morning. This detoxifies the body and boosts your metabolism facilitating proper bowel movement.
2. Apples – Nature’s Doctor
As an everyday measure, eat food high in fibre. Fibre helps the colon remove harmful toxins, soften stools and improve bowel movements encouraging the body to expel waste products. Fibre-rich foods also help heal intestinal problems. You can increase your fibre consumption by eating fresh fruits like raspberries, pears, prunes and apples, and fresh vegetables like spinach, artichokes, peas and broccoli. Cereals, whole grains, nuts, beans and seeds also contain fibre.

POWER CLEANSE Yoghurt, with live and active cultures is a probiotic that introduces ‘good’ bacteria into the gut. It helps digestion and calms inflammatory bowel conditions. Eat it as is, or add fresh apples, bananas and berries.

5. Raw vegetable juices
Also avail in drops - ideal for On-TheGo Support / Gargle Sore Throats
‘An apple a day, keeps the doctor away’, is very apt when it comes to the colon. Fresh apples and freshly squeezed apple juice encourages bowel movements, breaks down toxins and improves the health of the liver and digestive system. Use an apple cure as a colon cleansing regime. •
Start your morning with a glass of unfiltered apple juice and, after 30 minutes, drink a glass of water. Do this several times throughout the day and continue for 3 days. In between, you can also drink a glass of prune juice. It’s advisable to avoid solid food when following this route.
• Digestive Health • Anti-Inflammatory / Anti-Oxidant
While on a colon cleanse, it’s beneficial to avoid processed and cooked food for a few days. Instead of solid food, drink fresh vegetable juice several times a day. Vegetable juices contain sugars that improve bowel movement. Green vegetables, in particular contains chlorophyll that helps remove toxins while the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes keep the body healthy and energized. Ready-made vegetable juices don’t have effective enzymes to help your body break down and remove waste products so make sure you drink freshly juiced variations. Include ingredients like carrots, beets, corn, squash, spinach, kale, celery, parsley and ginger.

Choosing the right herb is important. Some, like Cascara Sagrada and Senna work like a laxative and can be used to flush the colon and release waste, while other herbs like Peppermint stimulate digestion and peristalsis and soothe the intestines. Some perform a scrubbing action that eliminates faecal matter and prevents toxic build up, and others kill harmful bacteria and parasites. There are also those that soften the stool, add bulk and improve the function of colon muscles to promote healthy and regular bowel movements. Many pre-mixed combinations include additional herbs that help flush and enhance the functioning of the liver and or kidneys. Most include herbs that promotes bile flow and stimulate the liver. Herbal colon cleansing products come in a variety of different forms including tea, tinctures, extracts, leaf, capsules or powders.
This ‘all-purpose herb’ is effective for both constipation and diarrhoea. It normalises the stool and soothes, coats and heals the lining of the intestines. Drink lots of water with it.
Aloe Vera detoxifies and has laxative properties. It soothes and heals the intestinal lining, helps restore acid/alkaline balance and promote healing. Besides the colon, it improves other health conditions like headaches, diarrhoea, constipation, skin infection and gastric pain. Drink it a few times during the day.
Ginger helps reduce bloating, stimulate colon function, improve digestion and help flush out waste and harmful toxins. Add grated ginger root to herbal or green tea.
Before starting a cleansing regime, consult your health care practitioner, especially if on medication or you have a health condition.
•
Be mindful - improper colon cleansing can lead to conditions like anemia or malnutrition.
•
Fasting is one of the most highly effective methods as it helps the body systems recuperate and eliminate toxins. Stay hydrated though with water, and fruit or vegetable juices.
•
Liquid food like soups, herbal teas, vegetable broth and juices, rather than solid food will help speed up cleansing.
•
A diet devoid of saturated fat, sugar, processed food, oils and fried food helps maintain a clean colon while foods like garlic, onions and bananas kill harmful bacteria and parasites in the colon. Live culture yoghurt promotes beneficial bacteria.
•
Regular exercise helps bowel function. Walk, run, jog, cycle or do yoga or Pilates.
•
Work at feeling emotionally balanced. Stress interferes with your ability to clean your colon through its effect on your enteric nervous system. Find ways to minimise your stress response.
CAYENNE PEPPER Cayenne pepper is detoxifying and helps break up mucous accumulated in the colon. Have some with warm water and honey or add it to your meals.
FENNEL SEED Fennel enhances digestion, reduces gas, relieves lower abdominal pain, flushes the colon and releases waste. arehous e.

PSYLLIUM
es
Psyllium husk is probably the most popular colon cleansing herb because of its high fibre content and ability to strengthen the intestinal lining. It contains mucilage which, when travelling through the digestive tract, absorbs water and swells making the stools in the colon bulkier. This triggers contractions of the colon walls that lead to bowel movements. Psyllium can be taken one to three times daily with plenty of water.

Useful Herbal Remedies:
FLAXSEEDS Flaxseeds are rich in Omega –3 fatty acids, antioxidants and natural fibre that help cleanse your colon naturally. They absorb water and expand in the colon, removing toxins and mucus.

ALOE VERA
om
Throughout human evolution, food has been our medicine. Traditionally, we’ve always included herbs, many of which have healing properties that affect the digestive system. Although medicinal herbs have many of the nutrients we need – they shouldn’t replace a well rounded diet of high quality good grains, vegetables, and fruits. Colon cleansing herbs are popularly used as an effective method to cleanse the colon. Pre-mixed formulas, single herbs or a combination of several herbs together rejuvenate and restore intestinal health. Herbs have been used safely for centuries and work a little slower than enemas or colonics but will achieve good results.

FIND YOUR FLOW
by Dr Mark Vella
Many books and programmes speak about ‘being in flow’, ‘finding your flow’, and ‘going with the flow’ but how do we actually get there? Dr Mark Vella gives us some ideas. Every one of us, including you, is currently in one of 4 states: 1. You are in a situation where you are happy now, but have no clue what you want in the future. Pehaps the future seems too much to contemplate. 2. You know exactly what you want in the future, but find day-to-day life a struggle. Too much to do, too little time and money. You feel constantly stressed. 3. Life is a struggle, and you have no clear vision and goals. This can feel like a downward spiral. 4. You feel happy and have clear goals that motivate you. You learn, grow and outperform in ways that transform your life. This is the flow state.
ACHIEVING FLOW 3 things you need: •
•
•
Be open to new daily habits, new ways of thinking, behaving, and taking action in the world. Know that you cannot create a new reality by playing the game of life the same way you always have. Understand that reality only exists in the present moment. It is the only place you have power. You can have ‘to do’ lists and planner apps till the cows come home, but the only real change exists with what you do in the present moment. You need to find happiness in the now, before you can achieve your long term goals. Not the other way around.
It takes time and work. And being human, it’s likely you will resist the process of change and new habits until your brain and biology establish new patterns.
CHECKLIST 1. First, spring clean. Recognise and remove liabilities in your life. These are things that don’t work for you, and drain you. Bring them to a close. Find alternatives.
30
2. Going forward, be mindful of what you give your time and energy to. These should be things that add value to your life. 3. Take your power back if you have let it go. Draw new boundaries, for yourself and others. 4. Appreciate where you are in life right now and focus on being grateful for what you have now. 5. Practice new daily habits of nutrition, rest, meditation, inspirational reading, and gratitude that support being happy today. 6. Take time to form a vision and define clear goals that passionately motivate and draw you forward. 7. Break your goals into achievable chunks. Goals set too high will overwhelm you, and you’ll lose the happiness in the moment. 8. Equip yourself with skills to meet your challenges and goals. Know what to do and how to do it. Confidence in your ability to achieve the goal will keep you in flow. 9. Finally, monitor your progress. You want clear and immediate feedback of how well you are doing, and if things are going off track. Get support.
get a coach or some support and make them crystal clear. When you have those goals are they in reasonable chunks you can achieve? Or are they set too high? What skills do you need to equip yourself with to meet your challenges and goals? How will you know if you are on track and in flow? Or if you are not?
did you know? Flow is a state of being totally present, immersed and happy in the moment while engaging in a pursuit that’s motivated by and aligned with your vision. It is the ultimate acheivement state for business, sport and personal performance.
Anyone can achieve a state of flow, and in doing, create an amazing life and legacy.
HOW CAN I USE THIS CONCEPT? Answer the following: Which one of the 4 states are you in? What do you want to end or bring to a close in your life? What do you want to focus your time and energy on instead? Have you let your power go? How will you get it back? What’s good in your life right now? Write down 5 things you are grateful for every day. What new daily habits will you try to help you feel better in the moment? Do you have a vision and clear goals? If not, helping you live life well

“Many of us women suffer from Thrush, vaginal to be specific. (Not that we talk about it). Question is,
how do we stop it from coming back?” Thank you for contacting us. You’re absolutely right in your assertion that many women suffer from Vaginal Thrush. In fact more than we realise – with the triggers varying from person to person and ranging from poor diet to hormonal changes to use of antibiotics. Vaginal Thrush affects many women and it is actually quite common. Indications are that one in twenty women may have recurrent Thrush – that is, four or more episodes in a year – whereas, about one out of one hundred women may have Thrush almost constantly. Fact is, a good 75% of women will have a bout of Thrush at some time in their lives, of which 50% will have Thrush more than once. Vaginal Thrush is most widely found in women in their twenties and thirties with women who are pregnant, who take antibiotics or who have diabetes being particularly prone. Usually caused by a yeast-like fungus called Candida, Thrush is a fungal infection and it affects us all differently. Many of us have Candida in our vaginas without it causing any issues, with vaginal secretions and friendly vaginal bacteria keeping the fungus under control. Problems arise, however, when the natural balance in the vagina is upset and candida multiplies. Whereas Vaginal Thrush may be a mere irritant for some, it can be quite debilitating for others.
“It’s important that you treat fungal infections from the inside out” (Embarrassing and uncomfortable too). Symptoms can be in the form of a) vaginal discomfort i.e. itching or burning b) a thick white discharge with an appearance like cottage cheese c) redness or swelling of the vagina or vulva d) stinging or burning during sex or whilst urinating and e) splits in the genital skin.
Whatever the symptoms, it is how we tackle it that’s important. What one tends to find is that women who suffer Vaginal Thrush only periodically i.e. once or twice will likely use an anti-fungal cream whereas chronic sufferers (people who get Vaginal Thrush three times a year or more) will need a more lasting treatment. Like Kolorex® Advanced Care. Kolorex® is a complementary medicine that assists in treating fungal infections from the inside out. Coming in easy-to-swallow softgel capsules with no aftertaste, the product contains an effective - and proven - antifungal solution that kills Candida from the inside from day one. By taking a full course of one Kolorex® softgel capsule a day with a meal for 30 days, women with recurrent Vaginal Thrush can help reduce the risk of Thrush coming back and, in so doing, benefit from long-lasting relief. Kolorex® is available in pharmacies and health shops without a prescription. Because Vaginal Thrush affects us differently – with some having a mild case and others, a severe case - it’s fine to extend the treatment of Kolorex® to two months where necessary. For those who are prone to Thrush, once the 30 days course is completed, you may want to consider a maintenance regimen of one capsule twice a day for one week a month, which can be taken for as long as you need to. If you display the symptoms of Vaginal Thrush for the first time, you may want to visit your doctor - especially if you experience pain. This is because the symptoms are often similar to those of a number of skin conditions and, occasionally, sexually-transmitted diseases. However, your GP or Gynaecologist will be able to diagnose you correctly by taking a swab to confirm whether you have Vaginal Thrush or not. If you’ve had Vaginal Thrush diagnosed previously and you recognise the symptoms, you could just go to a pharmacy to buy a cream or antifungal tablet over the counter. However, if your Thrush doesn’t clear up after a few days, and it keeps coming back, Kolorex® is the answer. You may not want to hear this but a change in lifestyle and diet may be

“Kolorex® Advanced Care is recommended for when Vaginal Thrush keeps coming back” necessary – yes, you may want to consider reducing your consumption of alcohol, bread and other products with yeast. Do this, and you’ll be sorted. (May not be for ever, but certainly for much longer!). What’s important to remember is that whilst a cream will give temporary relief and clear Candida from the outside, Kolorex® will give long-lasting relief, clearing Candida from the inside. Practice Self Love
So many issues revolve around a lack of self-acceptance. It’s important to spend time making peace with your body and how you look. Exploring your attributes, appreciating the wonder of your body and paying attention to how you present yourself to the world is something everyone can benefit from. Here are some ways you can nurture your being.

lookwell PRACTISE POSITIVE SELF-TALK
If you find it difficult, pretend you are the mother of a little you and act as gently with yourself as you would to a child.
Conversations we have with ourselves are good indicators of the amount of self-love and appreciation we foster. Most people speak to themselves in a way they wouldn’t dare speak to anyone else. Keep positive adjectives handy and use them to encourage yourself. Practice self-compassion. This means not judging yourself or allowing others to judge you, not blaming yourself, getting to know and accepting yourself, forgiving yourself, loving yourself, helping yourself overcome insecurities, respecting yourself and protecting yourself.
MAKE IT AN ON-GOING PROCESS
····························
“A beautiful life will bloom from a beautiful mind that is nurtured by beautiful thoughts. At any time you can allow beauty to flow within you” Dodinsky from ‘In the Garden of Thoughts’
·································· Self love is asking yourself everyday what you need and then making sure you receive it. This is an on-going process that takes consistent dedication, commitment, faith, work and sweat. There are an abundance of stereotypes and limiting cultural beliefs we need to work against. Every day ask yourself what you did for your mind, your body, your spirit, your relationships, creativity and passion.
MIND - Keep a journal with a collection of positive quotes and messages you love and that inspire you. Read a really good fantasy story. Learn a poem. Explore something new. Learn facts about another culture or country. Download a scrabble app on your phone. Watch a documentary.
BODY
- Create a self-love ritual by pampering yourself from head to toe. Massage your feet and acknowledge the job they do in carrying you around. Give yourself a pedicure and paint your toenails even if it’s winter and you are wearing boots all day. Exfoliate your skin all over with a good quality scrub. Run a bath and decorate it with candles. Add a luxurious oil. Put on a face mask and cover your hair with a deep moisturizer. Find the best oil or cream you can find, preferably something that has a beautiful fragrance and cover every inch of your body. Put perfume on, even if you’re only going to bed. Sprinkle lavender or clary sage on your linen.
SPIRIT - Take up meditation. Write out a guided meditation for yourself, voice record it and play it back frequently. Use prayer beads to help you pray. Read a spiritual book. Learn a mantra. Connect with your higher power. Give thanks. Make a list of things you are grateful for. Faith is the foundation for self-love, no matter what you believe or whether your are religious or not. There is beauty in belief. It develops intuition
lookwell and helps you make the right decisions. Spiritual exploration unfolds a journey that helps you learn more about yourself. It uncovers new thoughts and passions that make you shamelessly authentic.
RELATIONSHIPS
- Find time to see people who are special to you. Acknowledge close friends and family by telling them how valuable they are in your life. Do something special for someone who needs it. Learn to communicate in a way that makes people feel seen and heard.
CREATIVITY - Do something outside your normal routine that inspires you. This could be anything from a trip to the aquarium or a tour of art galleries, a visit to the SPCA, a bicycle ride to stone churches in the city, a museum, a new board on Pinterest, a movie in the middle of the day, a mountain trip, a Bonsai nursery. You might need a horse ride on the beach, a parachute jump, a long nap, a cooking lesson, a road trip, a coat of paint in your bedroom or a new scrapbook. Honour the creative spirit you have inside you and give it fuel to operate.
PASSION
- Along the journey of life, people often lose sight of what they’re passionate about. Most people think there’s a choice between following their passion and being ‘sensible’ or making money. Sometimes it’s more sensible to follow your passion and have faith that abundance will follow.
‘The grass is greener where you water it.” If you’ve forgotten what you’re passionate about, go back to your childhood and remember the things you loved the most. This will give you a clue and help you get back on track.
TURN YOUR BODY INTO
MAKE YOUR SKIN SHINE
···································· Regard your face cleansing routine as valued time-out and a chance to show respect and honour to yourself. BLEMISH FREE – If you’re prone to blemishes or spots it’s extremely important not to use chemical products. Always choose natural ingredients that support the natural oils your body produces. Apply a good quality cleanser and get rid of traces of cleanser with a toner. Do not rub the blemish but rather tap it dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Use a calming product like chamomile or a natural antiinflammatory. Cover an ice cube in a towel and apply if inflammation is severe. You may want to try an oil based product, although this seems contradictory, especially if your skin is oily, it makes sense when you think that oil dissolves oil better than water does. SUN REPAIR – Eat red food, the phytochemicals in red foods are carotenoids and anthocyanins and they help your skin protect itself against the sun. This includes food like red peppers, strawberries, cherries, blood oranges, watermelon, berries, red grapes, tomatoes. Take Vitamin A and C, they also help the skin’s ability to protect itself against the sun. Some researchers believe that when wearing sunglasses that shield sun rays from the eyes, the brain doesn’t get the message that you’re in the sun and doesn’t turn on melatonin protectors. Rather shield your eyes with a wide brimmed hat. Look for products that have sun protecting ingredients like rosehip and aloe vera. SCRUB – Skin exfoliators stimulate the production of new skin cells. Do a regular scrub using a gentle exfoliant. Massaging the skin also helps boost circulation and brings fresh blood to the skin. Another way to glow is to do a daily headstand. Make sure you get good guidance as to how to do it safely.
A LOVING VESSEL
······························· Treating your body like a loving vessel will amplify your level of self-love and give you more energy. You’ll be more intentional about what you put into your body and the amount of rest and care you give it. Eating nutrient rich food, getting enough exercise, sleeping well, exposing yourself to nature and beauty and honouring your passions stem from self-respect and love.

WISDOM TO NOURISH John Homewood from Wisdom to Nourish Winter is a time of slowing down; so stop, pause, listen and value the silence between the notes of your life; to breathe music back into your life. Filling our lives with more and more things, our time with more and more activities we complain about how little time we have, not realizing it’s our mind that’s the problem, not time. We are set to be human Doings, rather than human Beings. Music is a beautiful way to restore your sanity. However most music today is similar to the madness of our lives – filled with too much content and not enough space, creating stress inducing noise. Yet the space creates context for music to appear. The space between notes facilitates the real depth of music and the silence between sounds invites perception and enjoyment of music. So it is with life. The silent spaces between frenetic ‘doing’ create a depth of life experience and separates the music of life from the noise called stress. Perceive and value the spaces in music, and you will find the sacred space of silence.

8 steps to
CALM
Knowing how to adjust yourself in a moment of turmoil or stress is a resource you can cultivate and develop. It’s a life skill that can change the way you interact with the circumstances that happen around you. Here are some techniques to work on.
did you know? Kissing reduces anxiety and stops a chattering mind. It also increases oxytocin, an extremely calming hormone that produces a feeling of peace.
1 BREATHING & NEUTRALITY
2 POSTURE
Heightened emotions create physiological changes in the body like increased breathing. We can change the messages we send to our brain by monitoring the physiological changes. Breathing is the best one to start with.
Negative feelings can diminish your posture without you really noticing. People carrying a lot of stress often look like they have ‘a weight on their shoulders’. Adjusting your posture, standing up straight and breathing yourself tall will automatically make you feel more empowered. Remember to check your posture regularly and bring it into a commanding, dominant or expansive position. Straightening the spine will help remove blocked energy and allow it to flow naturally.
When a challenge arises, bring your attention immediately to your breathing, and begin long, slow deep breathing in and out through your nose. This will create noticeable calm and control over your mind and emotional state. Another effective trick is to bring your hands together as if you are about to clap. Press your palms together in front of you and point them outwards. This creates a neutral state that makes space for you to assess the situation from a clear perspective.

3 EXPRESSION Turning your mouth upwards at the corners and smiling definitely changes the feelings you generate. It also changes the reactions you get from other people. It’s a powerful radiation of positivity that anyone can use at any time. You don’t have to feel happy but by projecting differently you change your mood and energy.

4 ACUPRESSURE
TRY THIS
Researchers believe that just 30 seconds of acupressure can reduce upper-body tension by 39%. The point to press is the fleshy skin between your index finger and thumb. It’s known as the ‘hoku’ spot in Chinese medicine. Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University recognize this as a proven de-stressor.
5 AFFIRMATION Have positive statements about yourself handy for when you need them. They adjust the brain hemispheres and give you mental assurance. Repeat your affirmation at least 15 times. Here are some examples: I am a valuable and worthy person, and I have much to offer to the world.
I am happy, I am grateful, I am strong.
HOW TO MAKE A MEDITATION JAR When you’re stressed, frustrated, overwhelmed or upset, the meditation jar settles turbulent emotions and thoughts and ushers in a sense of peacefulness. It’s a fabulous tool for any age but specifically good for kids feeling anger or frustration. Turbulence in the jar acts as an analogy for disrupted thoughts and emotions. All you do is shake the jar and imagine your head full of whirling thoughts or emotions, then watch as the particles slowly settle together. This automatically makes your thoughts and emotions calm. The time it takes the glitter to swirl and settle back at the bottom of the jar is supposed to be enough time to calm the nerves or distract negative thoughts.
6 TIME OUT
YOU NEED:
Time out is not only for children. Retreat somewhere quiet (or put on some headphones). Take long deep breaths through the left nostril only. This will immediately cool angry emotions. If you are a regular worrier, set aside a special worry time. A few minutes daily – to worry - becomes a chore after a while and makes you worry less.
7 TUNE IN Tune into yourself, your journey in life and feel your strength and purpose. Knowing that you are a vibrant living being with a path to follow and challenges to overcome can be exciting and empowering. Take a moment to see the infinite potential within you. Mentally connect to the vibration you’re in at the present time. Breathe in acceptance. Being conscious is a momentto-moment decision.
8 MOVE
a glass jar, hot water, clear glue, food colouring, bottles of glitter. Use glitter in different colours and weights. It’s good to have different weights and shapes of glitter particles because they’ll whirl at different speeds and make your jar more interesting to look at. 1. Add a drop of food colouring in your jar, and half fill it with very hot water. 2. Now comes the glue. The more glue you add the slower the glitter will fall but you can estimate about a 20% glue to water ratio. Aim to get your glitter to whirl for about 5 minutes. 3. Once you’ve added the glue, use a whisk to help the glue dissolve into the water. 4. Keep whisking and add the glitter bit by bit. Fill the glass to the top and seal it with the lid. You can also glue the lid on to make it tamper- friendly.
Repetitive movement can also be calming. Walking is soothing and has the perfect components to calm down a ruffled temperament. It’s even better if you are in nature and can benefit from nature’s healing energy. Any kind of exercise is calming on a physical, emotional and mental level.

Meet our Wellness Ambassador Britta Stalling Qigong is a perfect way to nourish inner peace, to bring calm and joy and to instil balance and harmony, no matter what the challenges and difficulties might be.
B
ritta Stalling is a Wellness Ambassador and firm advocate of Zhineng Wisdom Qigong, a practice she believes is highly effective to de-clutter the mind and embrace a state of peacefulness. “Real confidence comes from within, no matter the circumstances and Zhineng Wisdom Qigong helps you build this type of strength”, says Britta. Many of the teachings from Qigong involve stories and parables. Britta shares one of her favourites. This story is about a King from an ancient land who, many years ago, gathered all the artists from his kingdom together for a special commission. They were invited to paint a picture that illustrated peace. Whomever had the best idea stood to win a substantial prize. Many artists participated and in due time the king was presented with an abundance of offerings. Out of all of them, the king was drawn to two pieces. In the first there was a perfect image of a calm lake. Dramatic mountains were reflected in the lake and it detailed every little cloud reflected from the sky, in the water. Anyone looking at the picture immediately felt peaceful.
The second picture was quite different. It also had mountains, but they were rugged, rough and bald. In the dark and gray sky, angry clouds chased each other, rain burst down, lightning flashed and it felt like you could hear the thunder crash. A waterfall plunged into the depths of the mountain. No one looking at the painting thought this piece of art was about peace. But when you looked more closely, you could see a bush growing on the rugged cliff behind the waterfall. A bird had its nest right on this spot. Despite the raging storm, the mother bird sat in perfect peace and continued with her job of breeding. It was this picture the king chose. He explained why: “Do not be led astray by beautiful pictures. You don’t need peace when there are no problems and fights. Real peace brings hope, and above all, the means to remain calm and peaceful in your own heart, even under the most difficult circumstances and greatest challenges.” BE CALM, CONFIDENT AND COLLECTED Three times a day (e.g, morning, noon and evening) take a three-minute break and ‘Empty your mind’. Sit quietly and let your thoughts come and go without forcing anything. Take advantage of the gaps between your thoughts and widen them. If you practice this daily, after several weeks you’ll find you really can have no thoughts. It’s a practice that helps you to slow down, and to create space for a smooth and balanced life which automatically inspires confidence and acceptance of whatever might be happening in your life at any time. Another Qigong suggestion is to stop for a minute before starting any new activity. Do nothing for a minute, except be in the moment. When you start another activity even after such a short break, you will notice that you are refreshed and more focused. Wellness Warehouse is hosting a workshop focusing on Wisdom Qigong at Kloof street on June 27, 10h00 to 13h00 to ‘Calm your mind - Heal your body - Increase your Energy’. Contact Britta on Cell: 076 285 32 32 or Email: britta@bodyandmindfactory.com for more information.
did you know? Zhineng Wisdom Qigong is practiced all over China, noticeably in public parks or at the workplace during lunchtime. It’s officially recognised as the most effective healing and relaxation discipline in China. It’s easy to learn and suitable for all ages. Calming body movements together with visualisations and affirmations promote physical, emotional and mental strength alongside vitality and balance. Several scientific studies have substantiated its success.

DE-CLUTTER Your outer environment impacts on your inner landscape. Make it clean and serene by removing everything that will distract your attention. That includes piles of magazines, dirty cups or cutlery, paperwork, excess ornaments and bulky furniture. Your space should make you feel calm just by walking into it.
SIZE Decide how you want to feel in your space, you might want a small space to feel cosy or an expansive space to feel limitless. If you are using it for yoga, see if there’s enough space for a mat.
NOISE Check for noises that might throw you off. Be aware that it’s not, for instance, next to a lawn that gets mowed during the time you want to be there.

Light it up When it’s time to use it, hold one end of your smudge stick and use a candle to light the other end. Be aware that dry herbs can be fairly combustible so, light it carefully. Keep it over a clay bowl while it starts to burn. Once it gets going, softly blow out the flame and let it smoulder. It should smoulder for some time. Let it go for as long as you want and crush or smother the end when you want to stop it burning. You can use water to extinguish it but this is not recommended if you plan to use it again.
Make your own smudge stick Create blessings, purify and invoke good energy, send prayers up with the smoke, and feel cleansed and sanctified. Cleaning a space sometimes needs more than just soap. Sometimes it’s a bad vibe that needs to go or an emotion like sadness or grief, it could be a new energy that’s needed or a blessing. That’s when smudge sticks are useful. They’ve been used in cleansing rituals and ceremonies for centuries. They consist of bundles of string-bound dried herbs that are slowly burned. The smoke generated purifies and cleanses the space you are using it in. You can use herbs like Mphepho, Buchu, Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass, Mugwort, Thyme, Lavender, Yarrow, Juniper, Pine, Rosemary, Lemon Balm and Mint or a combination of a few.
Yarrow Flower
smudge stick makes a great gift, be sure to TIP Ainclude instructions on how to use it and write out a blessing for your recipient.
step by step Binding tightly is the key to making your smudge stick work. You want it to burn slowly like a loosely rolled cigar. When your herbs start to dry, they will shrink so bear this in mind.
1
Decide on a length – about 20cm long is probably what you need. Cut your herbs into similar lengths. Use a good handful of herbs, you want an abundant looking smudge stick that is able to smoulder for a long time. Layer the herb lengths on top of each other until you have a big bundle. Use string or wool to tie a knot at one end.
2
Hold your knotted end with one hand and with the other wrap the string around the bundle once and then pull it tight, wrap it again and pull tight again. Keep working like this until you get to the top.
did you know? Imphepho (Helchrysum Odoratissimum) is traditionally burned to invoke ancestral goodwill. It’s also used as a sedative to overcome insomnia. Small silvery leaves and tiny yellow flowers are found on this perennial herb.
50
3
Turn it around and wind back down again until you get to the beginning. You will get a criss cross pattern along the length of the smudge stick. Keep going up and down until you feel your herbs are safely caught together.
4
End off at the bottom end by tying more circles of string around the base so it’s firm and secure. This will be your holding end.
5
Peg your smudge stick up somewhere protected so it can dry out. If you lay it flat try and use mesh or a surface that has air flow around it. Once it is completely dry, it’s ready to use. It might take a few weeks.

NATURAL PET CARE
lovewell
eco mom & baby
By Paul Jacobson
E
very day, I am inundated with enquiries from pet owners looking for solutions to heal itchy skin or other health issues their animals have. After much research, and collaboration with reputable nutritionists, it’s become very clear to me that the same principles of healthy living that apply to humans apply to our companion animals. This statement also concurs with the latest veterinary studies – what is deemed healthy, safe and nutritious for humans also applies to our pets. Successful diets for both human and animal are based on getting the pH balance correct, with a leaning towards alkalinity. We know, as a matter of fact, that acidity causes inflammation and inflammation causes an array of skin ailments, arthritic problems and renal complications. Cape Town based practitioner Dr. Yesheen Singh says: “I believe inflammation is the lowest common denominator for most chronic diseases plaguing humans and other mammals today. I think people should pay as much attention to what goes into the bodies of their pet children as they do to their human children! I think any opportunity to increase the awareness of the role diet plays on the body of both human and pet should be grasped with both hands.” We know that refined carbs are acidic and too much meat causes acidity. Pet food often contains inferior refined grains and carbs like soya meal, potato pea, brewers rice, wheat and corn gluten, which are all acidic. There are alternative grains one can use that are alkaline and that are nutritious. These include varieties like whole grains, sprouted grains, brown rice, peas and quinoa. THE POWER OF
MEDITATION
One of the most powerful gifts you can give a child is self-reliance. Uncovering the inner resources that each child carries within ensures they are able to face challenges throughout their lives and seek positive solutions. Meditation is one life skill that therapists and educational thought-leaders are increasingly using to build children’s resilience.
E
very day, we see the positive results meditation brings to the EarthChild project. It empowers children to overcome adverse conditions. A recent analysis of over 20 neurological studies into meditation and its effect on our brains was done by German and Candian researchers and published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioural Review (June, 2014). The study indicated that meditation affects the regions of our brain associated with introspection, body awareness, memory, self-control, emotion regulation and communication. Self-control, body awareness, emotion regulation and communication in particular are life skills connected with non-violence and reduced stress levels. The Dalai Lama once said, “If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.” The research seems to support his view.
How to Meditate: Find a quiet spot in your house or office. Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet placed firmly on the ground about hipdistance apart. Sit up straight. Relax your shoulders and your neck. Close your eyes. Listen to the sounds you hear around you. Now bring your attention to your breathing. If you notice your thoughts wondering, just bring your attention back
to your breath. Stay like this for as long as you feel comfortable, and then open your eyes slowly. Just R200 provides 1 child with weekly yoga and meditation classes for a year. Share the Love of Yoga: http://www.bitly. com/sharetheloveofyoga For more information about Earthchild Project www.EarthchildProject.org
did you know? For almost 10 years, Earthchild Project has been teaching meditation, breathing exercises and mindful living to children in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill. The children come from under-resourced communities with high levels of violence, substance abuse and poverty. This leaves them vulnerable to stress, anxiety and depression. It also impacts on their ability to focus and learn effectively at school.

Weight lifting, done improperly, can cause injury. Catherine Hayden speaks to strength trainer and chiropractor Dr Murray McDonald on technique, form and fallacy.
did you know? CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. It’s defined as constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity to optimise fitness.

S
hould you be doing some kind of resistance training? Well, resistance training like lifting, pushing or pulling heavy(ish) things is good for your bones, muscles, nerves, back (and everything else) and that’s whether you’re young, old, male or female.
Build yourself up
Resistance training can build you up or break you down. Treat it with respect and it’ll make you stronger but push too heavy or too often and you could hurt yourself. This goes against the ‘no pain, no gain’ mantra of some lifters and extreme CrossFitters but remember that you exercise to get healthy, not to hurt so: safety first. Always. helping you live life well
Follow these general guidelines, and chances are you’ll get strong safely and avoid injury >
movewell
If you exercise incorrectly you’re likely to get hurt. Consult a trainer, read a good book on the topic, or check out American strength training coach and author Mark Rippetoe on Youtube. Strict is safe. And whatever you do, never round your back when lifting. Keep it straight or slightly arched. If you can’t maintain proper form anymore, and this could be because you’re tired, your set is done. It’s that simple.
Leave your ego at the door
Pushing yourself when you work out is one thing, but doing this to impress other guys in the gym or your crush on the elliptical, will end in tears. Start with a set using a weight you find easy and gradually increase the weight until it gets challenging. This is called a ‘warm-up’. Try increasing that challenge next time you work out. This is known as ‘appropriate loading progression’. Basically, you’re increasing your load in a way that’s appropriate – not harmful – for your body.
Lift with your legs
Your spinal muscles were made to stabilise you. Your leg and buttock muscles are designed to do the actual movement needed when lifting/pushing/pulling heavy objects. (YouTube Bret Contreras for more details).

The spine is strong but sensitive. This means that back or spine pain is common, but actual damage is far less common than you may think. It’s important not to ‘push through the pain’ when you feel it because you risk making it worse. Having pain doesn’t mean you have to stop training, though – you just need to avoid exercises that cause that pain.

Training during injury
Your can train around an injury quite safely while it heals if you are careful and listen to your body. Pain is, of course, not good. If deadlifting hurts, try lifting less weight or try a different stance. You could also utilise a different exercise to target those muscles. All the while, you can happily train other parts of your body (provided this doesn’t cause pain). There is one important exception to this rule: Avoid sit-ups in general.
Vibrant Health Joint Vibrance Powder 344g R670
Rethinking sit-ups
It’s a myth that sit-ups burn stomach fat. They simply don’t. In addition, they degrade the spinal discs and can gradually cause lasting damage. Rather stick to variations of the plank exercise or, if you have to, hanging knee raises or very slow, controlled crunches.
Know when to stop
One good way to understand this rule is when it comes to the (in my opinion, wrongly) maligned exercise known as the deadlift. When you deadlift, your back/ glutes/hamstrings will get tired. They may start to ‘burn’. This is ‘good pain’. If you lose form, you lift too much weight, or you deadlift too often, you may feel sharp pain. This is not good. Stop lifting immediately and see your chiropractor if the pain doesn’t go away as soon as you stop.
What is deadlifting? A deadlift is a lift (using a weight or heavy object) made from a standing position without using a bench or any other piece of equipment.

KNEE CURL
Bend your knees and bring them up to your chest. Reach further and curl into a ball. Feel your neck and spine stretch. Roll forwards and backwards to get maximum stretch. Roll side to side then stretch your legs back onto the bed.
SPINAL TWIST
RISE & SHINE 5 good morning stretches
Become a ‘morning person’ and leap out of bed with a routine that wakes up your system and brings on a positive day. If your blood pressure feels a bit low or you’re sluggish and slow in the morning, you can change that by easing yourself into action. Here are 5 stretches to get you going.
TOP-TO-TOE
Move yourself down the bed or wiggle horizontally to give yourself more room for this stretch. Lift your arms way over your head and stretch from toes to fingertips. Breathe deeply and point then flex your toes upwards, waking up your ankles. Flex the muscles all along your legs and feel your side body lengthen. Keep stretching for a number of seconds, relax completely and stretch again.
HEAD ROLL
Lay down on your back, arms by your sides and roll your head to the left. Feel your shoulders and neck relax completely and breathe four long breaths into the crease in your neck feeling your neck turn more easily each time you breathe. Turn to the right side and do the same. Then repeat on each side. Stay lying on your back and bring your chin to your chest, stretch slowly for as long as you want. Bend your elbows, clasp your hands together and cup your head in your hands. Feel the weight of your head in your hands. Repeat as many time as you want.
did you know? Studies show that morning people are happier, healthier, more productive, and more successful than night owls. You can train yourself to become a morning person with lifestyle habits and obviously, by going to sleep earlier.
56
Lie on your back, bring your left knee into your chest. Take a breath in and on your outbreath hold your left knee with your right hand and gently push the knee over your body to the right. Open your arms into a T next to your body and look left. You might hear a click sound in your spine, don’t worry, it’s quite normal. Stay in this position for a few more breaths. Repeat on the other side.
HAMSTRING STRETCH
Bend your left knee into your chest then straighten it upwards to the sky. Grasp your hands behind your thigh to steady your leg. Feel the stretch going down the length of your leg. Keep your pelvis square when you do this. Circle your ankles a few times in each direction then slowly lower your leg down. If you’re not very stretchy, bend your knee before bringing your leg down. Repeat on the other side.
TOUCH THE SKY
Sit on top of your bed in a crosslegged position. Sweep your arms up over your head and use the strength of your arms to elevate your torso. Lock your fingers together and turn your palms to the sky. Feel the stretch in your rib-cage and spine.
SAY A MORNING MANTRA
Using a mantra is a way to internalise and harness a positive consciousness. It’s a sound, word or sentence you use in repetition that allows the mind to switch off and be totally in the present. Use a positive statement to set a beautiful tone for your day. Make up your own or try one of these suggestions.
I am powerful and enabled - Repeating these words helps you
recognise that you are in control of your destiny, you have the know-how and ability to effect whatever you want to happen in your life. You are fully equipped to choose positive outcomes.
I love and attract love - This smoothes the way for attracting
the positive side of people, for having gentle and nourishing interactions in your day.
Om -
OM is a universal mantra identified as the most elemental sound, representing infinite universal consciousness. It has a vibration that’s in tune with the earth and will balance and uplift you. When you chant OM make sure you make the O sound as long as the M sound.

SPECIALIST LAUNDRY DRYER DRY LAUNDRY FASTER Leaves fabrics almost dry in just 3 minutes
SAVE ENERGY WE TRIED IT
ANGSANA SPA Feel the heat For me, a treatment at the Angsana Spa in Cape Town’s Vineyard Hotel is an ultimate experience almost equivalent to a weekend holiday break. Firstly the venue is so picturesque, little brooks with running water, dense tree growth, rolling lawns and flowers greet you at every turn. My treatment was done in a room with expansive glass windows that look out over the verdant landscape. Rather than the normal Spa cubicle this one was spacious and luxurious.
Uses 100 times less electricity than tumble drying
PRESERVE FABRICS
Time and money saver!!
No heat damage and safe for all fabrics
Ideal for my delicates too! Make laundry day simple. With Spindel.
Angsana has a company culture that embraces excellence. Nothing is overlooked and I’m always delighted with the experience I have there. Candles line the pathways between rooms, a gorgeous fragrance lingers in the corridors, there’s always an offering of warm ginger tea or an iced version if you prefer. Finding the cold quite difficult and feeling a tad overwhelmed by the onslaught of winter, I was so tempted when I saw they were offering a treatment simply called Warmth. This consists of 120 minutes where, for 30 minutes, you experience body palming. This is done with the body covered by a towel and a broad stroke massage movement is worked throughout the body. It’s firm and thorough. Then there’s a sandalwood body treatment that uses little parcels of sandalwood infused paste that’s also worked throughout the body in a different type of massage movement. After that, there’s an hour long fusion massage. My massage practitioner Chi, was wonderful, she made sure I was comfortable the whole way through, she also checked to see if the pressure was right for me. I must say some of it was a blur because it made me so relaxed I went into a deep sleep. It’s just as well they give you about half an hour afterwards to find yourself again. After the treatment you can lounge in another beautiful space, drink tea, eat fruit and get ready to face the world again, albeit much more refreshed and composed than ever before.
Decorum, professionalism, quality and sensibility is beautifully executed. For reservations and enquiries contact Tel: 021 674 5005 or for information about Angsana log onto www.angsanaspa.com.

A good knowledge of emotional intelligence will instill deep psychological knowhow that’s highly beneficial to children.
FINDING FEELINGS
By Georgina Vintin
Feelings give you energy. Be in touch with them, express them and you’ll feel more energetic. If you’re unaware of your feelings or find it hard to express them, you may feel lethargic, numb, tired, or depressed. Even if you aren’t aware of having them, suppressed feelings lead to anxiety. Teach children right from the beginning to be comfortable with their feelings, to know how to identify them and also to express them and they are much less likely to be depressed. They will also find it easier to be present in the moment and to learn better.
M
any studies show how emotions can either hinder or enhance a child’s ability to learn. Emotional intelligence is something even the education department is starting to take note of. Schools are starting to realise that children need to learn emotional skills to be more aware and connected with both themselves and others.
Use these tips to help your kids maximize their emotional intelligence and appropriately express feelings: 1. Acknowledge your child’s perspective and show empathy: We don’t have to agree with our child’s emotions, but we need to make them feel heard and make sure they know their feelings are legitimate. Remember, children learn empathy by the act of people being empathetic towards them. Saying things like… ’So, when that and that happened, it made you feel x,y,z’ will make them feel understood and heard. Rather than say, ‘that’s such a silly thing to cry about, stop it now’, say, ‘I can see you are feeling upset’, and empathise with how they’re feeling.
58
2. Allow space for expression:
4. Teach problem solving:
Naming your child’s emotions if they can’t is essential. Teach them that a full range of feelings is understandable and part of being human, you also have them. Through your actions, teach them that emotional life is not dangerous or shameful. This will help them feel less isolated in their emotional world. Get them to learn how to identify different emotions and how to express them. You can do this by playing an emotions game. This involves acting out what different emotions might feel like and the type of scenario that might bring on an emotion. Download a list of emotions from www.listofhumanemotions.com get one person in the family to choose an emotion. Then get another family member to describe what it might feel like, what expression their face would take and what would have to happen to make one feel that way. It’s often very funny and a great way to get to know each other on a different level.
Teach your child a way to deal with strong emotions. Let them know that it helps to share a difficult feeling with a trusted person. Encourage them to spend time with it, see if they can identify where it comes from. You could even suggest they draw a picture of their feeling, or write about it. I often see adults who as children weren’t acknowledged in any meaningful way by any significant people in their lives. As a consequence they struggle with relationships and marriages. Because they’re accustomed to holding back their emotions, they don’t feel comfortable connecting too intimately with their partner or friends. It’s possible, through your own journey of understanding or by connecting with a therapist or psychologist to start removing barriers or fears and take some risks to become emotionally connected and supported by your partner and friends. This offers much more fulfilling relationships. Human beings are supposed to be living in relationship with one another, not alone.
3. Listen to your child’s feelings: Be a sounding board, this allows your child to let him or her express their feelings, no matter how extreme, without feeding back a negative response. Just listen, stay present, be interested and curious. Your child will find it easy to heal by staying connected to you during this process.

A few things you want to know about...
men’s health
Skincare matters
Your skin forms an important barrier between you and your environment. Keeping it healthy is vital so that it can do its job properly, and this doesn’t only apply to women. Ditch any harsh, drying products you’re using now and opt for aftershave, shaving cream and moisturisers made with natural ingredients.
Be heart smart
Unhealthy diets and lack of exercise also mean that South Africa has the world’s highest rate of high blood pressure among people over the age of 50 years old, says the South African Heart and Stroke Foundation. Get more exercise, eat more good fats like those from nuts, seeds, coconut and cold pressed olive oils, and avoid unhealthy trans-fats and processed sugar. These are all often found in processed and ‘junk’ foods.
Supplement for your body
Men’s bodies have different needs to women’s bodies when it comes to supplementation. Men especially tend to benefit from zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Zinc is important for men’s sexual health and omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish like salmon, are believed to be good for the health of the heart and the brain.
Stress less, move more
A review of studies published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that high stress levels could increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Exercise is one of the best stress busters out there, so get moving to keep your heart healthy. If you don’t like the idea of going to the gym, try something different. Mountain biking is a huge adrenaline rush, trail running can lead you to some beautiful natural spots, and yoga is an excellent workout, too. If you’re looking to supplement, try the adaptogen ashwagandha.
