Red espresso contains 10x more antioxidants than regular rooibos tea

RED ESPRESSO What is red espresso?

Even healthier

Versatile

Red espresso re-imagines rooibos into an espresso. It’s the perfect alternative to coffee if you’re avoiding caffeine – or if you’re simply not a fan. Better yet, red espresso is packed with powerful antioxidants. Just like an espresso is the ‘essence’ of coffee, red espresso is the essence of rooibos. It’s 10 times stronger in taste than a cup of traditionally brewed rooibos and has a richer, rounder flavour.

Red espresso isn’t just stronger in flavour than traditionally brewed rooibos, it’s also richer in the plant’s health properties. Red espresso contains five times more antioxidants than green tea and 10 times more than regular rooibos tea. This is because it’s ground finer, meaning more of the tea’s surface area is exposed to boiling water. At the same time it’s also exposed to far more pressure.

Red rooibos can be used to make just about anything you’d expect to get at a coffee shop. Red espresso makes flat whites, cappuccinos and an excellent latte which is topped by a beautiful saffron-coloured crema. Try Wellness Café’s red latte. Made with honey, cinnamon and steamed milk, it’s the perfect healthy, warming treat.

Wellness at the Watershed

The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront is Africa’s new home for craft and design, with over 365 fashion, jewellery, gifting, ceramics and furniture brands to browse from. After taking in and being inspired by the local creativity, pop upstairs to the Wellness Centre on the mezzanine level of the Watershed. Sit back and relax while qualified therapists sooth and pamper tired bodies and souls. The Wellness Centre also offers a wide selection of lifestyle products and refreshing juices from the in-house juice bar. HEALTHWAY NATURAL PRODUCTS What is your company’s offering in a nutshell? South African sourced natural and organic products specialising in the many facets of Volcanic Ash as an external and internal application. We offer a range of creams, soaps, and supplements, most of which are suitable for sensitive skins. We go to the root of health problems using our unique blend of volcanic ash, with many years of hands on experience. Using Living Clay and Detox Therapy for beauty treatments and getting rid of skin problems like eczema, pimples and acne to name a few. Who inspires you? Ran Kinshinsky who wrote the Clay Cure and Dr Marc Sircus an acupuncturist and doctor of oriental and pastoral medicine. He is the author of some astounding medical and health-related books. Your favourite advice? Detoxification is the foundation of health. Get rid of the problem and the body will heal itself naturally. SHIATSU AT THE WATERFRONT owned by Gurjeet Dillon What are the benefits of a shiatsu treatment? Shiatsu is a pressure point therapy; a stress relieving session carried out while the recipient remains fully clothed. No oils, ointments or aromas are used. Shiatsu realigns the body's natural energies through stimulating the meridians and pressure points. We offer a convenient head, neck, back and shoulders massage, it takes about half an hour. It’s perfect for during a lunch hour or after work while the traffic clears. The full body treatment takes just over an hour and helps alleviate chronic back pain, sciatica, injuries, jet-lag, migraines, sinus problems, insomnia, depression, poor circulation and many more ailments created by today's stressful lifestyle.

Who inspires you? To be honest the biggest inspiration for my work is my clients. They have taught me more about their bodies, lives, their emotional and physical challenges than any book or any teacher could ever do. They have been my true mentors. Their input, ideas, support and encouragement is the drive behind my business. What piece of advice do you live by? Be creative not competitive! Creating means I contribute to the world and competing means I take from the world. There is enough for everyone out there. Competing always leads to either greed or pride, and both are dangerous to our growth as humanity. HOLISTIC COVE owned by Sadia Hamza and Adam Beneke What type of treatments does the Holistic Cove offer? Holistic Cove offers high-end therapeutic massage (pressure point and Swedish) on both a physical and energetic level in a caring, upscale, professional environment. Our goal is to tailor the client’s experience based on feedback and information. Pressure point therapy helps maintain overall health and works on the energetic system. It is useful for a wide range of disorders. Recently, we’ve introduced Cupping which is an ancient and universal practice with benefits like improving sluggish circulation and lymphatic drainage, nourishing blood supply, increasing energy, and balancing the nervous system. Who inspires you? My inspiration comes from Maya Angelou and Louise Hay. Having read their books, I am inspired to have a more energetic approach to treating clients. Your favourite quote? An all-time favourite quote is by Maya Angelou, “We are at our greatest when we encourage and connect with another human being”

helping you live life well

BODY REACTIVATION owned by David king Can you explain more about Reactivation? A Reactivation session can improve balance and energy flow creating perfect synchronicity and homeostasis within the body. Think of it like having your foot on a hosepipe - when you remove the foot it releases and allows the natural flow of the body to resume. I release tension along the spinal cord, hips and pelvis. This then clears the communication channel between the brain and the rest of the body. The Reactivation method is a revolutionary holistic approach that can help get your body back in sync with nature and in the best possible position to heal itself. This non-invasive alternative process looks to correct energetic weaknesses to help create maximum health. Who would you say your guru is? Anthony Robbins the motivation guru, he says, “Whether it’s a full time mom, a professional athlete at the top of their game, or the CEO of a multinational corporation, those who are truly living an extraordinary life — life on their terms — are those who know the answers to three things: What do you really want? What’s preventing you from having it? How do you change your life now? What’s your favourite piece of advice?

“To be able to help others and make a difference is what gives life meaning” quote from Anthony Robbins

Tea with Shonah

Having heard about the gluten-free cake selection at Crush Fresh Food Café and Juice Bar in St. George’s Mall in Cape Town, we couldn’t resist stopping by to try it out. The idea of a guilt free treat in the form of a raw, vegan cinnamon and coconut tart, or a chocolate brownie with toasted pecan nuts was tempting. We sent our journalist for tea. She reports.

W

hen an out of town traveller called Crush ‘the best health café in the whole world’, and visitors from New York begged for a branch there, we understand why. Owner Shonah Gallichan has been on a food journey for most of her life and has a knack of creating the most delicious food with highly nutritious ingredients. After a health condition sent her to India in search of healing, she fell in love with the Ayurvedic system of medicine and the wisdom behind their restorative dietary principles. On a trip to Koi Samui in Thailand Shonah experienced a retreat with a specialised nutritionist and learnt about taste and temperament. Countless raw food workshops had her experimenting with combinations and food processes. A bookcase full of recipe books is testament to her passion but the real test is in her menu. Although the Chermoula free range chicken salad; the Tofuevos Rancheros wrap rolled with tofu scramble; and the Bircher Quinoa Muesli are all favourites, not to mention the renowned winter soups, I was interested in something sweet. When you give up sugar and gluten, you need to know where to get alternatives. Crush is definitely the place. Their Coconut and Cinnamon NutFree Tart; Gluten-Free Almond, Coconut And Raspberry Cake, Or The Lemon Tart With Almond are all outstanding.

Spices make fabulous remedies especially in winter when your body needs warming.

Soothe a Sore Throat This month we’re featuring aniseed in a tea. It’s a fabulous cough medicine and will ease a tight chest. It’s also a much loved breath freshener – tea made from aniseed herbs like star anise and anise flowers is one of the oldest remedies for halitosis. Here’s a recipe taken from Margaret Roberts newly launched book, Tea – 60 Teas to Revitalize and Restore (Struik) that uses aniseed and orange.

ANISEED & ORANGE WINTER WARMER INGREDIENTS 2 TEASPOONS ANISEED ORANGE ZEST 1 CUP FRESHLY SQUEEZED ORANGE JUICE 2 TEASPOONS HONEY

1. Pour a cup of boiling water over the aniseed and a twist of orange zest. Let it stand for five minutes. 2. Simmer the orange juice with honey for one minute. Stir to dissolve the honey. 3. Add the aniseed tea to the pot of orange juice and stir for a minute. Strain . Sip slowly to take the chill away and to soothe a tired throat.

TIP A single star anise can be added to tea, desserts or curry dishes to give a delicious liquorice like flavour.

Pumpkin is packed with minerals and vitamins essential for healthy digestion and immunity. It’s also a good Banting option as it has a low carbohydrate count.

Power Packed Pumpkin By The Banting Blondes

During season changes, our health is often vulnerable. Keep your immune system strong by making sure everything served up in your kitchen is high in nutrients and full of ingredients that strengthen your body. One of our favourite healthy ingredients for this time of year is pumpkin. One cup of pumpkin has more fibre than two slices of whole-grain bread. Looking for a post workout snack? A cup of pumpkin has more potassium than a banana – potassium helps restore electrolytes and supports muscle function. Pumpkin is rich in Vitamin C & A; both are essential to fight bacteria, infections, viruses and to strengthen immunity. Pumpkin seeds contain tryptophan - this helps the body produce serotonin which helps you chill out, relax and even sleep better Pumpkin seeds are packed with Betacarotene – which has cancer protection

Sometimes though, the immune system gets misdirected or confused and it turns and starts fighting us and our healthy cells and organs instead of the baddies. This is called auto-immunity. When this happens it’s usually when your body is fighting something. This could be an infection, a toxin, a food allergy, or even stress. Somehow instead of attacking what it’s supposed to, it starts fighting your joints, or your thyroid, your skin or gut or even your brain - sometimes your whole body. This immune confusion comes from what’s known as molecular mimicry.

T

he result is disease like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, celiac disease, thyroid disease, and often conditions that come and go and are difficult to define. An auto-immune disease can affect one or many different types of body tissue. It can also cause abnormal organ growth and changes in organ function. At the root of all these conditions is a common bio-chemical process - a rogue immune response also known as systemic inflammation that results in the body attacking its own tissues. Inflammation is a prominent factor in auto-immune diseases.

22

Most physicians suggest antiinflammatories to reduce inflammation or immune suppressing medication. Mark Hyman, an international leader in the field of Functional Medicine has a different approach. He says, “If you want to cool off inflammation in the body, you must find the source. Treat the fire, not the smoke. In medicine we are mostly taught to diagnose disease by symptoms, not by their underlying cause. Functional medicine, the emerging 21st paradigm of systems medicine teaches us to treat the cause, not only the symptoms, to ask the question ‘why are you sick’, not only ‘what disease do you have’. helping you live life well

According to Hyman the causes can be hidden allergens, infections, environmental toxins, an inflammatory diet, and stress. Where conventional approaches don’t have a method for finding the insult causing the problem, functional medicine provides a map to find out which molecule the cells are mimicking. He has a checklist to follow when assessing and finding the cause. Here are some of the steps he recommends.

Celiac disease requires a blood test.

Heavy metal toxicity will cover mercury and other metals that can cause autoimmunity.

did you know? Auto-immune diseases are becoming more and more prevalent in the 21st century. Interestingly, they occur almost exclusively in developed countries. People living on the breadline without running water, flush toilets and good hygiene aren’t prone to auto-immune disease. Exposure to germs and infections helps the body know the difference between what is necessary to fight and what is part of a functioning bodily system.

Menopause is a magical time where women settle into a whole new empowered phase of life

EMBRACING MENOPAUSE By Leila Sadien

Delaying the dreaded drop in hormones with the onset of menopause is something every woman wishes for. Cries of “Can’t I stay young forever?” echo the halls of my integrative and aesthetic practice daily. Let’s learn to celebrate the change and welcome the pleasures of growing wiser gracefully, without paying the price of suffering through the unfortunate symptoms.

did you know? The most important predictor of when you will reach menopause is the age your mother reached hers. Menopause timing is strongly genetic but other factors that shorten the lifespan of your ovaries include smoking, chemotherapy, gynae surgery and ethnicity. The use of birth control however, does not seem to delay or hasten menopause.

26

D

espite what women have been led to believe, Menopause, like pregnancy, is not a disease, it’s just a normal phase of life that often produces discomfort of varying degrees. It is when the ovarian function drops off and so causes fluctuation of all the hormones in the system. Menopause most often occurs between the ages of 40 and 60 and peri-menopausal symptoms, which can begin well before the actual change in menstruation and continue after the periods have ended, can last up to five years. The symptoms women in my practice often complain of are irregular periods, hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, hair loss or thinning, acne or bladder infections, but there are many more as hormones affect almost every part of our bodies. The risk of osteoporosis, heart disease and other chronic illnesses also rise dramatically with the drop of certain hormones. helping you live life well

HRT or synthetic hormone replacement has long been the doctor’s automatic goto therapy for menopause but with side effects like stroke, heart attack, leg clots and increased risk for at least four different types of cancer, more and more women are recognising the benefit of alternative therapies. Many of the women in my practice are prefer not to use chemical drugs and welcome the general holistic wellness that an integrative approach can bring. An integrated approach to managing this biological event is to address both the aggravating symptoms and resulting dysfunctions, without blocking the process entirely. Lifestyle management may be enough for some and can include dietary modifications like the exclusion of heating foods like spices or caffeine, eliminating food intolerances to reduce inflammation and and cutting out toxins like smoking or alcohol to reduce

further risk factors for disease. A balanced diet, low in processed carbs and with enough protein and beneficial fats can go a long way to improving wellbeing. Regular exercise including weight-bearing-osteoporosispreventing activities, like hopping on a trampoline is also very important and has been shown to help with mood disorders of menopause. Loss of body fat percentage has another wonderful side effect of helping to balance out hormones in the system. This is also an excellent time of life to engage in a practice like meditation or mindfulness; this not only reduces stress but can also assist in finding new meaning for one’s life and help deal with the psychological challenges of entering a new phase. Meditation has also been proven to reduce risk of heart disease and cancer if done regularly. Aesthetics can also play a huge role in the acceptance of growing older and aesthetic medicine has many therapies and products aimed at anti-aging. This may well be the time to consider the wellness benefits of things like botox, collagen stimulation treatments or other rejuvenating therapies if you haven’t before.

BENEFICIAL SUPPLEMENTS Important supplements to take at the onset of menopause are:

• Calcium and magnesium - largely to protect the bone breakdown after estrogen reduction. • Vitamin D3 - to allow calcium absorption into bone and prevent a number of cancers. • Omega 3 fatty acids - to minimise menopause symptoms and again support all body functions, including preventing heart disease and cancer. • Vitamin B12, B6 and folic acid – these are very useful for many menopausal symptoms including fatigue and mood disorders. • Vitamin E - is particularly helpful for vaginal dryness among other menopausal symptoms.

Typical alternative medicines used to diminish the symptoms of menopause in my practice include the following: 1. Phytoestrogens or plant based estrogens, these can naturally be found in flax seed or chickpeas for example, and are the basis of many over-the-counter menopause preparations. They can effectively help reduce most of the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and mood disorders as well as reduce risk factors for chronic disease. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

2. Bio-identical hormones are hormonal supplements, but unlike synthetic hormones, these are made to be the same as the hormones produced by the ovaries. They have the same benefits as HRT but with fewer risks as long as they are sourced from a reputable compounding pharmacy. The preparations are most often in the form of a cream. 3. Herbal remedies: • Black Cohosh is mostly beneficial for hot flashes but dosing is not easy and studies do not report a benefit above placebo. There are also concerns about liver toxicity, though this is probably the most widely used remedy available over the counter for menopause.

GOOD HEALTH ADVERT

Red clover is also a commonly used remedy, assisting many in the milder symptoms of menopause, though there is little evidence as yet to support its use.

Ashwaganda, Chaste Berry, Passion Flower, Sage, Agnus Castus and wild yam among others, also help to relieve different menopause symptoms and many herbal blends containing these are available over the counter.

4. Evening Primrose Oil has also anecdotally shown to be of benefit in treating hot flashes but can have unpleasant gastric symptoms at high doses. 6. Chinese medicines like Ginseng, Dong Quai and acupuncture treatments show remarkable benefit in treating the symptoms of menopause as well as improving general well being. It’s best to have these prescribed by a trained Chinese medicine doctor, as opposed to buying them over the counter. 7. Ayurvedic remedies have been shown as greatly beneficial in reducing most symptoms of menopause, as well as reducing risk factors for chronic disease. Most Ayurvedic preparations do contain plant Oestrogens among other herbs and I most often prescribe these blends in my practice. Menopause is a magical time, where women settle into a whole new empowered phase of life, one that is not subconsciously focused on procreation any longer. A time where we can really settle into who we’ve become and what we’ve learnt. A time to revel in our hard earned wisdom, with less concern of what people think of us and more confidence in ourselves, our integrity and our beliefs. It is a time to be celebrated and not suffered through. Find the right combination of treatments that work best for you and instead of meno-pause, you can be a meno-GO-GO-GO! Younger By Day

Lifestyle plays a huge role in how fast you age. Of course genetics play a role but there are definitive factors that can keep your biological age well below your actual age. Dr Mehmet Oz has a checklist to keep in mind when staving off the effects of ageing. Here are some of the factors he deems important.

32

helping you live life well

lookwell HAVE PLENTY OF ANTI-OXIDANTS

BUILD MUSCLE

····································· “Start with the refrigerator”, he says. The first thing you need is plenty of foods rich in antioxidants. Think of an apple. Cut it in half and squeeze lemon juice on one half. The lemon half will stay new and crisp while the other will shrivel and go brown. That’s because of exposure to oxygen or oxidation. “The same thing happens to our skin, to our heart, to our eyes,” Dr. Oz says. “All our bodies need antioxidants.”Blueberries, sweet potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, acai berries and green tea are all good anti-oxidants.

USE SPICES

····································· More muscle makes the body more efficient. It can also help you manage the symptoms of many serious or chronic conditions. Doing weight-bearing exercises to build muscle mass will build bone density which helps prevent osteoporosis. Besides that, feeling strong and toned generally makes you feel happier.

INCREASE FLEXIBILITY

····································· Stretching increases blood flow, it decreases risk of injury by taking your body through the full range of motion. It also helps posture and mobility.

····································· MEDITATE Keep your spice bottles full and easily ····································· available in the kitchen and to get into the habit of adding spices wherever you can. Cinammon can decrease blood sugar levels. Tumeric helps prevent arthritis, and paprika and cayenne help with blood pressure and improve circulation. Ginger is cleansing, it decreases blood pressure, alleviates arthritis and reduces the risk of cancer. Spices are available in capsule form too.

KEEP REGULAR

····································· Keeping your colon clean, well flushed and having regular bowel movements is more important than is generally emphasized. Fibre goes a long way towards making this happen. Get fibre from wholefoods, beans, fruit and vegetables. Other good sources are psyllium husks and Chia seeds.

TAKE OMEGAS

····································· Chia seeds also have lots of omegas, so does flax seed oil, Salmon oil and Spirulina. Omegas are very important to keep triglycerides low; to reduce joint pain; to help prevent depression, for visual and neurological development. There are countless more benefits attributed to Omegas.

GET YOUR HEART RATE UP

····································· This means doing cardio exercise a few times a week. Even if you only do it for twenty minutes, raising your heart rate will increase you base fitness level and pump blood more rapidly through your body.

Completely relieving your body of built up stress and tension can be done by slowly training yourself to let go. Spending 5 or 10 minutes a day focusing on letting go will provide enormous benefits to your body and mind. We trap all sorts of emotions in our bodies that make us heavy and tired. Release is vitally important and meditation is an excellent way to achieve that.

did you know? Although it can have gastrointestinal side effects, aspirin is praised for anti-ageing, heart boosting and cancer prevention. It’s also said to prevent acne and to keep skin looking younger. In one study, University of Oxford researchers reported that the risk of getting various cancers breast, ovaries, prostate, esophagus, colon and rectum dropped substantially (30 to 60 percent less in those taking daily aspirin for three years or more). That’s partly because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

lookwell GET QUALITY SLEEP

····································· Sleeping is the fundamental way we reboot ourselves.” Dr. Oz says the growth hormone, which is important for maintaining vitality and youthful vigour, is almost impossible to increase naturally without sleep. “Without the sleep that we know is so nourishing, we begin to dramatically age faster. It strips years off of our real age.”

HAVE MORE SEX

····································· Sex creates an increase in chemicals that keep us young. “When you have loving conjugal love with someone and you actually have that passionate moment, you not only exchange bodily chemicals, but you make chemicals within you,” says Dr Oz. “So women get oxytocin increases, which give you that loving bond you want with the world around you and people around you. Men have an increase in testosterone. Testosterone is what puts the moan in hormone. It sort of gets you going.”

SUPPLEMENT WITH VITAMINS

····································· Vitamin D According to Dr Oz, 1,000 units of vitamin D a day will benefit the body in a variety of ways. “Vitamin D is critically important for preventing cancer and critically important for reducing heart problems. It’s linked to multiple sclerosis, to juvenile diabetes. It’s one of the best ways of reducing infection rates. It’s got a ton of things to make your immune system function the way you want it to function.” Ten minutes of direct sun exposure will do the trick or otherwise take a daily supplement.

Calcium & Magnesium “You want to take calcium, but you’ve got to take it with magnesium because if you don’t take them together, the magnesium loosens your poop,” he says. “The calcium makes it a little bit like concrete.”

Dha Omega-3 We’ve mentioned food sources you can get Omegas from but if you think you aren’t getting enough then take a supplement. Some experts think flax oil is enough but others insist there’s nothing

more effective than fish oil. Obviously it’s important to check your brand and see that it doesn’t come from a contaminated or unsustainable source.

Low Aspirin Dose If you’re over the age of 40, Dr. Oz recommends adding two baby aspirins daily. “We know it’s very effective in reducing heart disease, very effective in reducing cancer. We think it might actually reduce wrinkles. There’s a lot of things aspirin might do that are beneficial to you not only because it thins your blood, but it’s a very powerful anti-inflammatory drug.” The dose should be about 162 milligrams daily.

Multi-Vitamin When you take a multi, divide it in half and take half in the morning and half in the evening to regulate the dose. “Premenopausal women should take a multivitamin with iron in it and 5,000 units of vitamin A. Men and post-menopausal women can take a basic multivitamin with 2,500 units of vitamin A.”

EAT LESS, AGE LESS

Eating less scores even better than exercise in terms of delaying the ageing process according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in America. A low-kilojoule, nutritionally balanced diet was found to lower the concentration of a thyroid hormone called triiodothyronine (T3), which affects the body’s metabolic balance. Kilojoule restriction lowers the level of an inflammatory dye your molecule hair gently called tumour necrosis factor and effectively without alpha (TNF). With T3 being lower using chemicals and reduced inflammation, the body’s metabolic rate is slowed and so the natural ageing process is also slowed.

Recent MRI scanning studies show that even when we’re quietly at rest and following instructions to think of nothing in particular, our brains settle into a conspicuous pattern of activity that corresponds to mind-wandering.

Meaning to be

MINDFUL

By Bruce Grierson

The term ‘work/life balance’ is fairly new. Somehow everyone has swallowed it as a valid construct. But who decided it has to be sliced up like that? Are we not alive while we’re at work — do we metaphorically die the moment we clock in? And is ‘living’ so categorically free of ‘work’ that unless we’re in the hot tub being fed grapes we’re not doing it right? The more we think categorically, the more we start wondering what’s going on in the other place, where we aren’t, instead of being where we are.

36

livewell do it yourself

C

learly, work/life balance, however we understand that, is going to be better than work/life imbalance. But is there a better way? We believe there is, and it’s based on mindfulness. Data shows just how deep and how wide the power of mindfulness goes — well beyond its most celebrated and well-documented effect of making us happier moment-to-moment. Mindfulness reduces burnout and fatigue. It sharpens the senses. It significantly reduces stress, which has an enormous effect on our physical health. And of course — these are some of the earliest findings we have — it increases longevity. We taught elderly adults in nursing homes to be more mindful, and they lived longer. More recent research has shown it decreases chronic pain, and symptoms of arthritis. (We’ve long known it reduces pain post-surgery and speeds recovery time). For those of us who are healthy, don’t for a moment think that the concept doesn’t apply. Roswitha Becker, General Manager for Lufthansa German Airlines - Global Load Control, says that

‘The times I regretted the most was when I didn’t speak my truth, or live it.’

did you know? According to the data from a Harvard group’s study, the particular way you spend your day doesn’t tell much about how happy you are. Mental presence – the matching of thought to action – is a much better predictor of happiness.

When we’re mindful, we’re more effective; we’re more efficient, and more innovative. The products we create are superior. Mindfulness is visible in who we are and what we do. Mindfulness is the essence of charisma. People find us more attractive and funnier and more trustworthy. When we’re mindful, we’re less prejudiced, more authentic. Mindful people are the kind of people you want as your boss, your employee, your spouse, your cross-thefence neighbor. Doors tend to slide open in the path of mindful people. How can this be? It’s not so mystical. Mindfulness amplifies the traits that make us likeable. And people will go out of their way to help people they like. But it’s more than that. That the deck seems stacked in favor of mindful people is a function of how mindful people view the world. A mindful person knows, like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, that there is no good or bad but thinking makes it so. You hear people say, “Jim’s really lucky!” Is Jim lucky? Or is he just mindful? Jim has learned that evaluations are in our heads, not in the things that are actually happening. Again, it’s about challenging those mindless categories: good/bad, pass/fail, lucky/unlucky. At work you may wonder, ‘Why did that incompetent get promoted instead of you?’ Scratch around a little and you find the ridiculousness of categories. Turns out you were passed over because you’re ‘too impulsive.’ But wait a second: didn’t your last performance appraisal laud your spontaneity? That’s the same trait! People can always find a reason to reject you, and they can always find a reason to accept you, and sometimes it’s the same reason. You have to soar above that kind of evaluative ground-fog. And the way to do that is through mindfulness. So, getting back to the original question, balancing work and life. It doesn’t really matter what context we find ourselves in — at the office, at the beach, between the sheets, giving a speech (hopefully not giving a speech between the sheets). We want to be the same person. We are the same person. Why assume there are different selves required in these different roles? Why give up your sense of humour while you’re at work? Why give up your tenacity while you’re at play? Once we stop worrying about which part of ourselves is appropriate to reveal, once we’re no longer afraid, once we’re feeling good brave and bulletproof, it’s much easier to integrate who we are at www.wellnesswarehouse.com

work with who we are at home. Life stops being a zero-sum game: one choice at the expense of another. There is no expense. Plus, we stop worrying about how we’re being judged. The tension drains away. And life springs into high relief.

When people devote themselves to mindfulness something happens, something so profound I often call it a ‘personal renaissance.’ You enjoy the excitement as though everything is at stake. But you have the awareness that nothing is. That’s a good deal, however you slice it.

NATURAL PET CARE

By Paul Jacobson

REAL NUTRITION

Minerals, vitamins, protein and hormones cannot function without enzymes being present. Enzymes in turn, cannot function if the cells are too acidic and if they are exposed to heat, as with most processed pet food. Where a leather shoe might be just as rich in protein as a rump steak and a metal nail may have as much iron as spinach, there is a difference in the way the body reacts to these sources. In the same way, a spectrum of multivitamins from the pharmacy may have the same profile as Granny’s Sunday Roast with chicken, sweet potato, veggies and salad. Both are balanced in minerals and vitamins but which is more nutritious? Unfortunately, in the pet food industry, the criteria used for determining a healthy nutritious meal, is whether it is balanced and not necessarily whether it is nutritious. There was a case in point not so long ago when hundreds of our beloved companion animals became sick and died when melamine was added to pet food. Melamine, a derivative

from coal, shows a high protein content, but in reality it’s not only, not nutritious, but in fact dangerous. In this case the pet food was balanced. It had its vitamin and mineral component, it had its balance of fats, moisture and carbohydrates and the correct levels of protein. It appeased the governing authorities and yet was later proven to be dangerous and of poor nutritional value. Whole nourishment comes from whole, natural and enzyme-active foods that are not refined, processed or laden with preservatives or chemicals. The highest quality nourishment can be obtained from organic foods grown on fertile soil and raised without harmful chemicals.

It’s no wonder that many of our companion animals are malnourished and suffer from a wide spectrum of illness that include skin conditions, digestive problems, cancer, diabetes, arthritics conditions, renal complications, heart disease, dental disease and epilepsy. Before you feed your animal, make sure you are giving it food that’s not only balanced but that’s nutritious as well.

"

Many food processing techniques use high heat as a key factor in producing pellet/ kibble pet food and canned pet food. The effects of heat processing are documented as follows: 1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Protein structures in the food are altered. Enzymes are effected and depending on the type of enzyme, could be irreversibly denatured with loss of activity 50% of the B vitamins are lost 70% of vitamin C is lost Mineral absorption is disrupted.

Where a leather shoe might be just as rich in protein as a rump steak and a metal nail may have as much iron as spinach, there is a difference in the way the body reacts to these sources.

Don’t wait for someone to bring you flowers, rather plant your own garden

Orchid Expert

Flowers are one of earths’ most wonderful visual pleasures. If you want to make your life more beautiful, fill them with flowers, says Richard Morris at Starke Ayres Gardening Centre. While many people are under the impression that orchids are hard to grow, Richard believes they’re a great place to start. They’re exotic and filled with mystery and allure. Their flowers speak with poise and splendour and they have captivated the hearts of many. If you want to capture their essence and cultivate this aristocratic plant, here are some growing tips from Richard Morris.

did you know? The orchid family Orchidaceae, is one of the largest family of plants – there are over 20,000 different species in the world.

We would like to thank Duckitt Nurseries, one of the biggest single orchid nurseries in the southern hemisphere, specialising in Cymbidium orchids.

40

S

outh African indigenous orchids grow in a wide range of habitats, including bushveld, savannah, karoo scrub, fynbos and grassland. Like many other plant groups, most of the species occur in the Western Cape. Orchids can grow on trees (epiphytic) or on the ground (terrestrial). Although the beautiful Disa plant is the best known indigenous specie, the one’s easiest to grow are Phalaenopsis and Cymbidiums. The orchid you probably know and one that’s most commonly sold is the Phalaenopsis Moth Orchid – they’re celebrated for their long lasting blooms. The Cymbidium orchids though, are trusty, reliable, resilient and free flowering. They are easy to grow, accessible and rewarding even if you’re a novice. In autumn and winter, even though they may look neglected, they unexpectedly throw out blooms. They also bloom in spring and their flowers last about six weeks. helping you live life well

HOW TO GROW CYMBIDIUMS: LOCATION They won’t flower if they don’t have a good temperature drop from day to night during their induction time (January to March). That’s why it’s important to leave them outside during this time. The species most commonly used in modern hybrids originally come from the cooler mist belt of the Himalayas.

TEMPERATURE They thrive under a 50% shade cloth or under the dappled shade of a tree or half day sun patio in the garden. They can withstand temperatures from 1ºC to a hot day. Flowers and buds must be protected from frost or heat.

WATER Water them in the morning on sunny days only when the plant begins to feel dry. Always drain them freely. Do not water the leaves in the heat of the day, this can cause the shoots to rot and foliage to burn.

FEED Every third watering give them a half to one heaped teaspoon of specially formulated Starke Ayres ‘Orchid food’ in 5 litres of water. This contains a balanced proportion of nutrients often lacking in the traditional context in which orchids grow. It’s also water soluble and will be easily and quickly absorbed by the plant. did you know? In 1826 the 6th Duke of Devonshire employed Joseph Paxton as Head Gardener to his estate. In those days orchid hunting was a noble and popular pursuit and Joseph sent one of his trainees to the Khasi Range of Hills in Calcutta where he bought back over 80 new species. This, and the other orchids they had collected made it the biggest in the country. Joseph created the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in London and was given a Knighthood for his services.

Multifeed P is completely water soluble and can be used instead of Starke Ayres Hydroponic. Controlled-release fertilizer ‘Nutrifeed’, may be used as an alternative to the above formulas. Scatter approx. 1 flat teaspoon around the perimeter of the pot. It will be released over a period of about 4 months.

tend to hide out in the potting bark mixture so submerge the potting bark in a bucket of water if they become a problem. Use natural insecticides and fungicides only if necessary. Follow instructions carefully. Wash hands and sterilise tools before using on the next plant. For adventurous gardeners the beautiful ‘Poor Mans’ ground orchid Bletilla Striata is a favourite. I have them in containers in my patio along with the graceful easy to grow Bamboo Orchid Sobralia macrantha which are easily grown in a well drained potting soil and have gracefull elegant stems bearing magnificent deep pink flowers.

POTTING Do not break up the plant too often, as it will affect the flower production. Each pot division should have at least three mature bulbs with leaves. Back bulbs can be potted singly in small pots with coarse grit. Make sure it has clear drainage holes. For potting medium, use Rock-Wool or a mixture of sieved bark and marble chips or an Orchid mixture specially formulated and sold in most Garden Centres. If using rock-wool dry – fluff it out with a garden fork and moisten lightly to minimise dust –do not compress. Water generously after potting and never allow medium to dry out completely.

HYGIENE As both Phalaenopsis and Cymbidiums are epiphytes and grow on trees above the forest floor they normally absorb moisture through their exposed roots from rain or mist that passes over them. When growing them at home it’s very important that there is no water that collects around roots and that they drain well. Keep plants clean by dusting off leaves with a damp cloth and be vigilant for scale, mealy bud or snails. Snails

REVIEWS

There are so many authors we are so grateful to for giving us not only information and inspiration but comfort and assurance too. None of these books are new but they are highly recommended to anyone interested in living a more meaningful life. Although there are countless more people we would like to give tribute to, here’s a selection of some of our favourite gurus we know you will enjoy.

Roots and Wings: Talks on Zen by Osho (Paperback) This is one of Osho’s first books and was published in 1975 but is a real classic and still available on Amazon. Using traditional Zen stories and responding to seekers’ questions, Osho speaks about being grounded before you can fly into the sky of consciousness. In his usual irreverant way Osho skims through subjects as diverse as food, jealousy, businessmen and enlightenment, the barriers we create through fear, and gratitude. It’s a great introduction to Zen. If you can’t get hold of the book you can find more information on Osho at www.osho.com.

In the Meantime: Finding Yourself and the Love you Want by Iyanla Vanzant (Paperback) You know where you want to be, but you have no clue how to get there. You know exactly what you want in life, but what you want is nowhere in sight. Perhaps your vision is unclear, your purpose still undefined. On top of it all, your relationships, particularly your romantic relationships, are failing. If these scenarios feel familiar way down in the deepest part of your gut—then you, my dear, are smack dab in the middle of the meantime. In this book, Iyanla Vanzant teaches us how to clean the windows, floors, walls, closets, and corners of our minds. If we do a good job, our spirits will shine bringing in the light of true love and happiness.

Anatomy of the Spirit, The Seven Stages of Power and Healing by Caroline Myss, PhD. (Bantam) Myss explores the links between spiritual and emotional stresses and the specific illnesses these create in different parts of the human energy system. It shows the model of the body’s seven centres of spiritual and physical power where she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions – The Hindu Chakras, the Christian sacraments and the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life. Using this model Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you develop your personal power and spiritual maturity.

Total Freedom by

Total Freedom is a collection of K r i s h n a m u r t i ’s most profound writings and talks. It offers insights into the nature of the self, meditation, sex, love and the mysteries of life and death. His core teachings inspire us to recognize that ‘truth is a pathless land’, to accept no spiritual authority – not even himself – and to think critically, that we may free our minds and see clearly on our own personal journey.’

Eckhart Tolle – A New Earth, Awakening to your Life’s Purpose (Penguin) This is another book everyone should have in their collection. Eckhart Tolle provides the spiritual background for anyone to make their own life (and the world) better and more meaningful. He has a wonderful voice and way of explaining concepts and ideas. BABY TORTOISES & FALLING ACORNS There’s a deep edged balcony that wraps around the farmhouse at Bartholomeus Klip. If you sit there for any amount of time you’ll hear an acorn fall on the tin roof and a tractor drive by. Then Sanna will appear with tea, champagne or whatever you might fancy depending on what time of the day it is. There’s a dreamy garden with hedges trimmed into rectangles and trees shaped into lollipops. Someone is always sweeping the acorns away to keep the outside neat and tidy. It’s only an hour away from Cape Town in the Riebeek Valley near Hermon.

verything is very orderly but not in any irritating way. It’s deeply peaceful and has a different pace, one that seems to have lingered from 1659 when the farm first started. Much of the homestead reflects old world splendour from the shuttered windows to the beautifully chosen antiques and damask curtains set under high wooden ceilings. Glass vases with old-fashioned roses are a feature in every room picking up the hue on pink stained glass windows. Napping is an irresistible pleasure with ceiling fans gently lulling you to sleep on the crisp linen. A crystal decanter is constantly filled with sherry, and there’s always a jug of cold water that somehow gets magically refilled without you noticing. The farmhouse has 5 bedrooms and an abundance of cosy library lounges filled with story, travel and gardening books. You can rest on a lounger under one of the oak trees, swim in the reservoir turned into sparkling pool or hike through the reserve. Daniel, an expert bird spotter and game driver takes the open air land rover into the reserve twice daily and will show you different types of antelope, explain the difference between Quagga and Cape Mountain Zebra and point to a rare black Harrier Eagle or a pair of Fish Eagles. “Everyone wants to see leopard,” says Daniel who will proudly show you camera trap evidence of this elusive cat. Besides wheat farming, they also breed disease-free buffalo and support multiple conservation initiatives. One of these is a preservation facility for rare Geometric tortoises – something sorely needed after a fire nearly wiped them all out. All along the ten thousand acre reserve is a sweeping mountain range that gives an aura of mystery and romance, we rode

bicycles along the trails and were swept up in mountain magic and a search for baby tortoises. It’s a good idea to canoe along the dam, swim, hike or bike and work up some energy because the food at Bartholomeus Klip is famous. It’s irresistible and generous to a fault. Sisters Lesley and Louise Gillett leave no stone unturned in their search for the best and freshest ingredients to create the flavours that make up their sensational dishes. Being at Bartholomeus Klip is like living inside a recipe book. Dinner could be White Onion and Witzenburger Cheese Quiche with Walnut Pastry; Roasted Carrot Soup with Dumplings; Blackened Beef Fillet with Fenugreek, Saffron Garlic Aioli and Creamed Potatoes and topped off with a dessert of equal decadence. High tea is also a feature with pastries, tarts and specialities galore like Crème Brulee Tarts, Caramel Crunch Cake with Cinder Toffee; Vanilla Cream Cheesecake with frozen Cranberries and Walnut pie. Brunch is an amazing assortment of home made muesli, poached, roasted and marinated fruits in various degrees of deliciousness alongside pate, eggs and bacon. It’s a certified gastronomic experience. To see for yourself, get hold of a copy of their recipe book, Life on a Cape Farm published by Struik and winner of the Best Local Cuisine Award in the Gourmand World Cook Book Awards in 2014. If you’re planning a special event or want to bring your family and friends along you can also stay in the nearby Wild Olive House and Cottage. It has a self catering option and its own garden, swimming pool, large shady verandah and outdoor facilities for braaing.

Learning

The most effective path to meaningful success, is to learn to become whole again. Glenn-Douglas Haig

from Local Gurus

48

helping you live life well

livewell do it yourself

O

n the subject of gurus, Glenn-Douglas Haig has had his fair share. After being shot seven times in a hi-jacking and having his leg amputated from the damage, he underwent a journey more intense than most to find healing. Glenn-Douglas shares his discovery of two people that helped him reclaim his life. For the romantically inclined – or terminally lost – heading off to an ashram in India to sit at the feet of a skinny wise man in the hope of finding oneself, or at least the fluff in one’s navel is a long-anticipated yet often fruitless and costly adventure. Besides the clichéd stories of crowded smelly trains and the dreaded Delhi Belly, some of the gurus peddling enlightenment are also downright nasty – or at the least, a bit dodgy. I’ve occasionally endured dinner table stories of an eager young seeker’s spiritual non-adventures in the land of faecesridden, monkey-infested temples, and wondered what on earth the attraction was. What’s wrong with our local wise guys? Why can’t they help us find ourselves, or at least uncover the secret to everyday bliss? We’re on the same continent, so chances are they’ll have a better shot at finding us than a partially present guru across the ocean, who can’t even find his own trousers? Surely India does not hold an exclusive patent on spiritual or emotional nirvana? Of course it doesn’t – but most Westerners, especially Westerners in crisis, head off east to find a panacea for their woes. South Africans especially tend to overlook the wealth in our own back yards and are seduced by the vague shimmer of a promise in the east. My own crisis a decade ago put me in such severe physical pain that I would have swum to India if anyone had promised me relief from an amputated leg, so I understand the actions of a desperate man. However, my path led to two of South Africa’s treasures and I am honoured to share the healing experiences I had with them at my side. Michael Brown’s book, The Presence Process and my ten weekly sessions with him making me breathe very deeply for an hour at a time reduced the physical

pain in my stump by at least 80%. His story is remarkable and he found a way to reduce his own excruciating pain after almost committing suicide from it, through years of searching the globe for remedies ranging from the mucous of an Amazonian frog’s skin to Tibetan prayer rituals in the Himalayas. His work clears pain through aligning your body with your energetic blueprint through intense breathing practices, but it also opens a mental gateway to seeing yourself as the unlimited being that you truly are and letting go of all the physical and emotional toxicity that usually contributes to our pain bodies. He and Eckhart Tolle have toured together and their work is somewhat aligned.

You Matter You are on purpose and your existence matters. Without you, there would be something crucial missing from the universe. Without you the universe would not be the same. You may only feel like a drop in the ocean, but you have the power of the ocean inside you ... and the ocean knows you, even if you have forgotten the ocean. When you find the ocean in you, you will feel like the river that runs towards the sea, not trying to climb hills but simply flowing in accordance with the deeper calling that draws you nearer to fully merge with your greatest self. Colleen-Joy Page

However, by far my greatest teacher, mentor and yes, guru, is a local woman from Alberton who, in my mind, embodies the epitome of practical wisdom and enlightened living. Colleen-Joy Page is the seeker of all seekers and unlike Bono from the band U2, she has found what she was looking for. Her talent lies in making deep esoteric truths very practical and accessible – perhaps her East Rand roots have kept her grounded in

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

reality while exploring the stars, a bit like our beloved Charlize. Her book, My Life as an Apple Tree opened my mind to some of the most profound and liberating truths about what it means to be fully and gloriously human, and about finding your purpose as a state of being rather than doing. For anyone who wants a direct answer to the question, “Why am I here?” you can’t get a better teacher than the apple tree. Does an apple tree try to make oranges? And if it did, would it be happier? Colleen’s second book, Teachings from the Apple Tree goes deeper into the practicalities of living life from an ‘Equal To’ perspective. Being equal to whatever comes your way and being equal to every part of yourself is far more sustainable than trying to be greater, or less than your challenges. Trying to be anything other than what you are, is exhausting, but being equal to your unique self, what Colleen calls your Apple Tree self, is energizing. In a simple and powerful way, the Apple Tree books provide practical steps that address and liberate every aspect of the self, from existential quandaries to using your intuition as a guide to making better life choices. Her Apple Tree insights and wisdom brought me through a much more challenging adventure than the physical pain of losing a leg. They helped me rebuild my entire life after being shot seven times by armed robbers and losing not only my leg, but my entire identity. The emotional and spiritual vacuum that one is left with after a such an ordeal is indescribable, but the journey to Wholeness and living a deeply empowered life is made sweeter by the fruit of your own Apple Tree self. Glenn-Douglas Haig is a certified InnerLifeSkills® coach and trainer. Through teaching, coaching and business coach training, Glenn helps liberate businesses and individuals from the false belief systems that prevent them from achieving authentic success. VITAMINS FOR KIDS

Supplements should never be a shortcut to giving your children the best possible nutrition or as a replacement for healthy, home cooked meals.

D

oes your child need a multivitamin? When it comes to our children we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to help them grow into the healthiest adults possible. Does this mean they need extra vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients? Well, that depends.

Isn’t food enough? The general consensus among specialists is that children should ideally – like adults – get all the nutrition they need from their food. This isn’t always realistic, though. Some children stand to benefit from taking in extra essential vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients.

What South African kids need

Vitamin A promotes normal growth and development. It’s essential for healthy skin and eyes.

B vitamins: B vitamins like V6 and B12 are important for metabolism and for the production of energy.

Special diets

Fairoza Essack (ND) is a naturopath based at Wellness Wembley Square.

Remember to always follow the directions on supplements to the letter. Chewable supplements for children are designed to

A safe age would be 6 months. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) exclusive breast feeding is best for the first 6 months of a child’s life. There are exceptions to the rule and at times there may be a need to intervene before 6 months. Consult a healthcare practitioner if in doubt.

Which supplements do you recommend?

Our Wellness expert weighs in

Supplement safely

At what age can a child safely start taking supplements?

Essential nutrients for kids

The modern diet can be lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements, though. In South Africa, the most common deficiencies found in children are in vitamin A and the minerals iron and zinc. A deficiency can severely affect a child’s development. Just as you can be deficient in vitamins and minerals, you can also take in too much. It’s unlikely that a child who eats a healthy, balanced diet including a wide variety of fresh fruit, veg, healthy grains and proteins, would suffer from a severe deficiency. Proper supplementation though can offer a boost – especially in nutrients that today’s processed food is lacking, like zinc.

Children on special or limited diets are more likely than other children to be low in essential nutrients. Children who are lactose intolerant and don’t take in dairy, for example, might be low in calcium and vitamin D. Children following gluten-free diets can lack sources of certain B vitamins. A multivitamin might be helpful for children with certain chronic diseases, too.

34 50

taste good so that children will take them. It’s important for children to know that supplements are ‘medicine’, not ‘sweets’, and that they have to be taken in very specific doses. It’s a good idea to keep supplements, as with any other ‘medicines’, out of reach of children. While it’s not easy to ‘overdose’ on vitamins, certain vitamins taken in very high doses can be dangerous.

Vitamin C promotes healthy muscles, connective tissue and skin. Vitamin D promotes the growth of bone and teeth and helps the body absorb calcium. Calcium helps build strong bones as a child grows Iron is essential for healthy blood cells

Should children take supplements? There are a variety of factors to consider in answering this question. - How balanced is their diet? Kids tend to be finicky eaters and a lot of the time they don’t eat vegetables, in particular green vegetables (nutrient foods). - Kids starting play school, crèche or school will benefit from a strong immune system and specific nutrients can help.

LOVE, WHEN IT’S RIGHT By Fran Kruger

52

If there’s a ‘guru’ we need to acknowledge, especially on the subject of self-esteem, love and relationships, it has to be Iyanla Vanzant. Famous for her insightful wisdom and instructional inspiration, Iyanla, author and television personality is listed at seventh place, in Watkins’ Mind Body Spirit Magazine, of the 100 most spiritually influential living people.

W

hen it comes to relationships and matters of the heart, we all hit a crossroad at least once in our lifetime. For some of us, we’re paralyzed with confusion, fear and anxiety. Like Bambi caught in the headlights, we don’t know what to do or where to turn. “Is it time to run for the hills, put down your hoof, or sharpen your antlers,” we might ask. You can’t see the wood for the trees because you’ve been running around in circles over analysing, and having a zillion conversations with all the little voices in our heads. You’ve discussed and downloaded all your problems another zillion times with your besties, and because they love you, they offer up a willing ear to listen and a big shoulder to cry on. But how do you settle on a conclusion? Iyanla Vanzant, well-known author and television personality says,

“You don’t get to tell people how to love you, you get to choose if you want to participate in the way they love you. People love you based on who they are, what they’ve learned about love and the information they have at the time. And let’s face it, some people have a very dysfunctional or obscure vision of what love is. Love is not pain, suffering or abusive.”

seasons do change. An apple tree looks different in summer, autumn, winter and spring but at the end of the day it’s still an apple tree.

You allow blind faith, which leads to blind love, to take you into a relationship that is unhealthy.

Iyanla’s book “In The Meantime,” is about finding yourself and the love you want. In it she speaks about the ways we trip ourselves up, repeat patterns, or deceive ourselves in the pursuit of love and relationships.

You choose to believe that what your partner has done to another person, s/he will not do to you.

Here’s her list of behaviours and choices to look out for All the signs say this is not the one, but you ignore your internal alarms, and move into a love fantasy. Because you fear being alone, or because you believe you cannot have what you want in a relationship, you accept the first person who comes along, only to be left, beaten, ripped off or impregnated and then left, beaten or ripped off. You confuse friendship and niceness with romantic love.

Sexual compatibility is mistaken for love. You stay in a relationship although you are miserable, trying to work things out even when your partner shows no interest in working through the difficulty. You don’t express what you really feel because you believe it will hurt your partner’s feelings. You choose to believe your partner’s lies even when you know the truth. You act like you don’t know what’s going on when you do.

Because someone is nice to you and you are not used to it, you don’t know how to say no to them when you realise they are not who you want. You get caught up in packaging and promises.

She also says, look at your past relationship patterns and what you’ve learned about love because that’s what you’re going to attract. “If you are not attracting people who are lifting you up, nurturing and nourishing you then the healing is yours to do and it’s not about changing anybody else. Why would you choose less when you could choose more?”

You force your desires for a relationship onto another person, or issue an ultimatum. Because the person doesn’t know how to say no, s/he goes along with you… for a while.

What does it take for your heart to know when it’s had enough? To realise you’re repeating the same pattern and you’ve been down that road before. The surroundings may be different because

Because the other person expresses an interest in you, you respond without really exploring if this is who or what you want. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Iyanla’s advice: Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. And most importantly, learn to love, nurture and nourish yourself.

Make motherhood work eco mom & baby

Being a mom is hard work. Meg Faure, occupational therapist, speaker and author of books including Sleep Sense and Baby Sense, is an expert at making motherhood that little bit easier. Practical advice covers everything from sleep and feeding, to understanding your baby’s sensory personality. In time for Mother’s Day, she shares three tips taken from her 20 years of working with moms and babies. 1) LEAVE GUILT ASIDE The old adage – ‘Maternal guilt, it comes with the placenta’ is completely true. Being an expectant mom is an overwhelming experience and as a mom of three, I can tell you it never really changes. With each of my babies I have been overwhelmed by guilt – guilt over what I ate in pregnancy, how I delivered my third baby, when I stopped breastfeeding, leaving my baby boy with the nanny for the first time, going to work every morning when my third child was still a baby, losing my cool and shouting over a small mess… the list goes on and on. And yours probably does too, right? My message to my pregnant self all those years ago would be: Keep perspective; Don’t sweat the small stuff; Tell yourself daily you are a good mom; Encourage your partner and your friends on their journey; Be good enough – not perfect.

2) MANAGE ROUTINE Routine makes our lives as mums much easier but not all routines are helpful and relevant for your baby. A rigid routine can create anxiety, especially if your baby doesn’t naturally conform. Here are three steps to gently guide your baby into a daily routine: •

54

Know your baby’s internal clock Your baby’s in-built clock primes her to fall asleep easily and makes it much easier to establish a routine. Awake time (when baby is happily awake) changes with age. This is the secret to establishing a baby-centric routine

that’s flexible and meets your baby’s need for frequent feeds and sleep. Watch your baby’s behaviour and you’ll soon learn to follow her cues. •

Recognise baby’s response to sensory stimuli Some babies cope very well with stimulation and can be flexible or stretch their ‘awake times’ happily. Other babies become overwhelmed with stimulation and need to be guided into a routine more carefully to avoid overstimulation. Adjust sleeping times based on your own baby’s response to stimulation. Read your baby’s signals In addition to taking the individual baby’s personality and ‘awake times’ into consideration, be on the lookout for sign of tiredness. These signs will cue you into developing a day sleep routine. When your baby rubs her eyes, averts gaze or becomes grizzly, these are key signs that over stimulation has been reached and that your baby needs a sleep.

3) ADD FRAGRANCE Smell is a very pervasive sense, and an important one. When smells enter the nose they create a response in the brain. They do this in a different way to other senses, though. Scent travels directly to the conscious brain without being first processed by its relay system and is also linked with the limbic system, which controls our memory and feelings. That’s why smells can transport us so quickly back to memories of places and feelings about those places. helping you live life well

Newborn babies are especially sensitive to scent and it’s recommended that you wait until three months before using scent to calm your baby before, during, and while sleeping. •

BATH TIME: use baby bath products like a bath emollient, foaming soap or lotion with a scent

BEDTIME: at bedtime, give your baby a massage or rub them with cream that has a calming smell

IN THE BEDROOM: buy a burner for essential oils to fill the room with a calming fragrance. Keep it out of reach from your baby. A blanky that smells of mom or baby is also very soothing. You can buy teddies or soft toys impregnated with a soothing scent.

Use the following scents for sleep: Lavender; Chamomile; Vanilla; Rose About Meg Meg graduated as an Occupational Therapist from the University of Cape Town. Habit and certainty kill desire, yet how does one live comfortably with the elements of unpredictability and risk necessary for healthy eroticism? Esther Perel.

Mating in CAPTIVITY By Georgina Vintin

We’ve stolen our title ‘Mating in Captivity’ from a book written by Esther Perel who explores the paradoxical union of domesticity and sexual desire, and explains what it takes to bring lust home. Esther Perel also happens to be one of Georgina Vintin’s inspiration for couple counselling. We asked Georgina’s advice about love versus desire in a long-term relationship. She reports.

Love versus desire’ or ‘freedom versus security’ – how do we have both? How do we, in long-term relationships, manage to strike a balance between having security, love and safety with our partner, but at the same time expect and want to have desire, freedom and passion? Esther Perel, calls this arena ‘Erotic Intelligence’. Much like ‘Relationship Intelligence’ it’s about consciously putting our minds in a reflective space, to be aware of who we are, what our relationship is and most importantly – how we make it different and what we want it to be. Esther defines things we can do as individuals to promote passion in a relationship. Some of these are:

Talk about the boundaries, you may both have similar or different ideas – this is all up for negotiation.

Reflect on times, perhaps at the beginning of your relationship, and remember what fuelled desire and passion, and reignite these practices.

Ask your partner, what can I do for you to help build your feelings of desire for me? And vice versa.

Ask yourself and your partner, which parts of our love and security for each other can compromise desire and passion for the other?

Feeling good about our bodies – eating a healthy diet.

Keeping fit and trim – frequent exercise.

Doing well at work – being ambitious/loving your job.

When my partner is away and we reunite.

Feeling young – having fun and connecting with friends/family.

When my partner is doing or talking about something they are passionate about and others are admiring them.

She also talks about sex as a ‘space you enter’ not something you do but rather a state of mind. To encourage the balance between love and desire she encourages couples to work on:

Sexual privacy – having erotic space that belongs to each other.

Foreplay – that starts when the last sexual encounter ended.

Passion – knowing how to bring passion into the relationship – being wilful, focused and making it present.

Have conscious reflective conversations about what builds desire in your relationship, without compromising love and security.

Desire amongst couples is more prevalent when there’s a sense of separation. Separation can be in the form of physical distance or simply giving each other more space. Desire can also increase when there’s a sense of surprise or novelty. Both of these bring in elements of freedom and ‘unknowns’.

Many of Esther’s clients are asked the question, ‘when do you feel most desire for your partner?’ and the answers are often similar:

When my partner surprises me, when we’re having fun and there’s novelty in the mix.

THE WISDOM

OF COUNSEL

by Dr Mark Vella

In the pursuit of wellness, happiness and wealth you might find yourself seeking effective and relevant advice you trust. You want to make the best decisions and take the best course of action. There is certainly no shortage of information. In fact the choice of gurus, websites, and information out there can be downright overwhelming. Shortage of information is not the problem. Too much information is.

I

n recent years, I’ve really understood what author Robert Kiyosaki meant when he said, “The only difference between a rich person and poor person is how they use their time”. So in 2015, I made the choice to be very selective about three things: what I dedicated my time to, who I give my attention to, and where I put my energy and effort. I’d like to suggest the same for you, so that you curate your counsel, i.e. the expertise and information you filter and give your time to, as a valid life skill worth cultivating. This means that whilst remaining open, be selective about who you will listen to, watch, and follow. Look for better quality content that creates more value and better results in your life.

Get yourself a Brainstrust Successful people do this. They seek the counsel of people they trust who are experts in areas they are not. And, in your personal and business life you can do this too. We teach all our students to do it. I can say from experience, the more they apply this principle the faster their success.

I hardly watch TV, the news, or read the papers anymore. In fact after applying the advice below I cut my emails by half, by deleting all the newsletters I was bombarded with. Instead, I choose what I want to read by filtering my favourite sources of expert information into a reader service I receive on my computer or Ipad.

Look at the areas of your life you want to develop or where you have obstacles and problems. Solving these at your current level of ability is presuming things will change without doing anything about it. So, reach out to people you know. Go see them. Learn to ask for help. Try forming a relationship with an agreement around receiving help or counsel. It may mean bartering, making them dinner, or even paying them. Listen 80%, talk 20%. Take notes. Send them thank you notes and be consistent in the relationship. Show respect by being on time, and by applying what they share. You will be amazed what comes out of these relationships.

There are many options, but I use Feedly which receives blog posts and articles from all my favourite sources. Over morning

In the future, your success will not come from more information, it will come from curation.

How can you do this? Here are two suggestions I use, both in my personal and business life.

Use a reader service.

coffee I scan these on my Ipad. The one’s I really like, I save to Pocket, another app. I can read my Pocket of saved articles at any time on my computer or Ipad. I usually do this on a Friday.

helping you live life well

HOW CAN I USE THIS CONCEPT? Reader Service: • Feedly.com and GetPocket.com are free services. Download the apps on your Ipad or go the websites. Open a profile and personalise. Enjoy. Your Personal Brainstrust: • Take a piece of paper divided in two columns. • In the first column identify areas of your life that are not working for you, or that you would like to see change. • In the second, list people you know who you can approach as possible brainstrustees or who may know people you can approach. • Take action and pick up the phone. Meet. Get agreement. Keep asking, stay honourable in your intentions. Do good in the world.

Pharmacy FAQ Ways to boost the Immune System in Winter A good start is to get in some natural vitamin D from the sun or from your diet in the form of egg yolks or fatty fish. If you are indoors, and the winter days are rainy and dark you could supplement with vitamin D[eg. Metagenics Vitamin D 1000iu]. Add some garlic to your dishes to boost your immune as it is a potent superfood or try The Real Thing Alli-biotic which contains allicin the infection-fighting ingredient. What may be a surprising fact is that most of your immune health lies in your gut flora which acts as a first level of defence against pathogens from the things you eat. So add some Metagenics Balance Probiotics or Ultraflora Probiotic powder. If you do feel over-stressed take an Efferflu C which contains Vitamin C 1000mg, Echinacea and Zinc which is a great immune booster. Remember to get enough sleep and exercise even light exercise like walking will help strengthen your immune system. If after all this you still feel a scratchy throat and a blocked nose try some Locabiotal Spray and Degoran plus tablets. It will certainly speed up your recovery.

Speak to our pharmacists for more info on any of these products.

Things you want to know about...

happy & healthy babies Nappies

Go chemical-free

Exposure to certain chemicals can affect children’s development, especially in products they have direct contact with. Because babies tend to put things in their mouths, and because their brains are still growing and developing, chemicals can be more harmful to them than to adults.

Label lookout

Look for safe label options, like BPA-free, PVC-free, phthalate-free, free from SLS. As a rule, the shorter an ingredients list, the better. If you can pronounce the ingredients they’re more likely to be of origin – many of the chemicals in products we eat and use every day have long names – like sodium laureth sulphate (SLS).

Did you know? The average baby goes through 8,000 disposable nappies. These nappies are usually whitened using chlorine bleach, which can cause rashes and eczema. Choose nappies made from organic and recyclable materials like bamboo or use organic cotton nappies. They’re better for the planet, too.

Earth-friendly is planet-friendly

From baby food to dummies to toys, there are plenty of earth- and child-friendly alternatives to products made from plastics and other materials that might be harmful to young people and the planet. It’s just a matter of knowing what to look out for. Avoid chemical ingredients, and choose organic and natural.

Fragrance-free

Many baby products contain artificial fragrances that can be harmful. Even natural fragrances and essential oils can irritate very sensitive skin. Choose fragrance-free skincare products instead. Ingredients like aloe vera and calendula are naturally soothing to irritated skin. If in doubt, ask your paediatrician.
