EDITORIAL There is definitely an art to relaxation and getting through the day, through the traffic, the phone calls, and all the angst can be highly challenging. More people than we may think take some form of anti-depressant, sleeping tablet or chill pill. This just shows the levels of stress we’re subjected to, merely because we are human beings living on the earth. Hopefully some of the tips and ideas in this issue can help with feeling less stressed and more energised. As usual we have fabulous recipes to appeal to raw foodies, the Banting set and those hooked on superfoods. We speak to some illuminating raw food advocates, we take a serious look at prostate health, prompt you to audit your lifestyle and inspire you with a story about turning your life around. Our beauty section shows you how to be naturally clean and detoxed, it also encourages gorgeous groomed feet. On the home front, we are super enthusiastic about our new Gauteng store in Bedfordview. It’s great to finally bring our Jozi fans an opportunity to join in the Wellness journey. Here’s wishing you ample joy in the summer months to come. Yours in wellness Dr. Sean Gomes Co-founder

helping you live life well

WE TRIED IT SALT THERAPY

We’ve got so many different versions of Himalayan salt in the store. The benefits of this pink coloured salt are immense so when we heard about therapy in a Salt Grotto Cave, we were intrigued. Sandra Joselyn went to try it out. I had heard that salt therapy is good for eczema and seeing as both my son and me are predisposed to eczema we were happy to see if it works. Actually the Salt Grotto Cave in Panorama, Cape Town is said to help a number of conditions from psoriasis to asthma, bronchitis, coughs, sinusitis, ear infection, rhinitis, hay fever, respiratory allergies, cystic fibrosis, tonsillitis and more. We arrived to find two gorgeous pink salt rock caves built mainly of solid salt and other natural and ecological materials designed to keep a unique and stable climate. One of them has a flat screen TV with cartoons especially for kids. It also has buckets and spades to keep little ones busy. My son is almost three and has eczema on his hands so it was great for him to play with the salt. Studies show that 85- 95% of children became symptom-free, after only three therapy sessions. The effect is long-term with participants noticing a significant improvement even after 10-12 months. The adult cave has soothing music and reclining chairs. They use a method called halo therapy which is based on inhalation, filled with minerals. This includes 84 minerals and trace elements highly beneficial for the body. The salt cave has a microclimate similar to the one by the Baltic Sea but with many more concentrated minerals. There is a little waterfall in the adult salt cave where the solution of salt from the Himalayan mountains circulates again and again. This special salt has unique minerals that evaporate into the microclimate in the salt cave. You can also have massage treatments in the cave. It’s definitely an interesting experience especially if you’re looking for alternative treatment for skin or respiratory issues. For more information or to try it out visit www.saltgrotto.co.za or Email: bookings@ saltgrotto.co.za or Tel: 021 930 2445

EDITOR’S CHOICE

Feel Yourself ‘Being’ Have you ever done strange things like feeling the empty space behind your eyeballs, or listening to your heartbeat? How about feeling yourself just being? To me, that’s such a good way to relax – find the part of yourself that can express the feeling of just being. You will find that in ‘being’ there’s such a sense of relaxation.

Being Healthy

It’s hard to be sure you are eating and behaving as healthily as you should. I always feel good when I’m doing something for my body to make sure. Right now I’m taking Green Tea capsules from Flora Force. Green Tea has such a good track record, it’s filled with antioxidants to protect against free radicals and radiation; it reduces inflammation and helps detoxify; it strengthens veins and supports circulation. If you want a bath experience that stays with you for hours, pick up a sachet of the Desdner Essenz bath salt. It creeps right into your muscles and chases away all signs of tension. It also has a gorgeous fragrance that is transported through the steam from the bath. Dresdner Essenz Bath Salts R34,99

Get into a routine of exfoliating your skin, it works wonders by removing dead cells and boosting circulation. The scrub from Dermacleanse is made so beautifully, it is filled with aromatherapy oils that leave your skin highly moisturised. Dermacleanse is a local South African brand and is handcrafted with an abundance of expertise and experience. I use the coconut scrub and love the effect. Dermacleanse Body Scrub R259,99

Running Rivers

If you love drinking river water when you’re climbing mountains and trail hiking you have to get a Go Bottle from Lifestraw. It’s an easy-to-carry water bottle equipped with the revolutionary Lifestraw inside. This is a hollowmembrane with an excellent filtration device that removes 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoa, down to 0.2 microns. Lifestraw Go Bottle R649

Sunbathing safely

I’m very suspicious of sun creams - so many of them have ingredients really bad for your skin. I have researched Badger thoroughly and feel absolutely safe with their formulations. Badger’s natural sunscreens are certified organic and natural and provide safe broad spectrum protection using zinc oxide. They have a kids range too. Badger SPF 30 Sunscreen R249,99

PROBAC uses beneficial bacteria to clean, mimicking a purely natural process – for the ultimate green cleaning solution.

MEET OUR SUPPLIER

PROBAC BIOLOGICALS

Husband and wife team, Larry and Sandra Lachman started Soft Chemical Laboratories in 2001. A strong environmental focus and avid interest in green cleaning alternatives led them to develop PROBAC in partnership with undisputed world leaders in Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology.

P

ROBAC uses the concept of probiotics to clean many different environments. The positive results also keep rivers and oceans uncontaminated. They supply many retailers and have made strong inroads into the tourism and accommodation industry, especially those in ecosensitive areas. Key customers have been pinpointed in most neighboring countries and they are busy establishing a production laboratory in Mauritius with expansion plans to the Indian Ocean and East Africa. To manage the growing demand, the company is in the process of commissioning a modernised and fully automated production facility.

Their head office and production laboratory is in Durban, and they have distribution depots nationally.

The primary ingredients in PROBAC are selected blends of highly concentrated, completely safe beneficial bacteria (probiotics), selected from nature for their ability to biodegrade dirt and waste. It also incorporates leading edge high performance green chemicals from natural,

biodegradable, renewable and sustainable botanical resources. PROBAC offers a unique distinction in green cleaning, giving the end-user exceptional cleaning and odour control as well as the effective accelerated break down of waste matters in a natural biodegrading process.

PROBAC® technology follows the simple principle that ‘nature cleans best’, and has an extensive range of natural high performance cleaning solutions for the home and industry.

“Traditional cleaning with chemicals, (good or bad) results in ‘lifting and shifting’ dirt and waste along with the chemicals, which all transfer to the environment as a pervasive toxic mix. This pollutes our rivers and oceans, and cripples nature’s ability to do its job. Two things occur: less natural biodegradation and more pollution. We produce enormous amounts of dirt and waste, and then use harmful cleaning chemicals and disinfectants to clean up – this all lands up in our environment as pollutants. Destroying bacteria and cleaning with chemicals creates an imbalance in nature’s process. The natural, good bacteria get overwhelmed by the endless dirt and chemical pollution.” PROBAC simply uses the same good bacteria that nature does. PROBAC formulations have billions of these good bacteria that can be put exactly where they’re needed like surfaces, drains, washing dishes and clothing, deep cleaning and achieving super-fast biodegradation, cleaning the way nature intended, just a million times quicker. The result is an amazing technology shift - free of nasty chemicals - one that works in harmony with Mother Nature. PROBAC has gone beyond ‘friendly’, every drop being ‘good’ for the environment, and is now being widely accepted as the worlds most advanced cleaning technology.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PROCESS BEING GREEN PROBAC must not be confused with ‘biodegradable’ or ‘green’ chemicals. With PROBAC, it’s all about the ‘process’ being natural, and not just the contents, which of course are naturally organic, biodegradable and green anyway. PROBAC restores sustainable microbial stability in our home and the environment, and is completely safe to use. PROBAC achieves microscopic deep cleaning, leaving good bacteria behind to continue the fight, keeping surfaces cleaner for days after cleaning, and prevents bad bacteria at the same time – something other cleaners cannot do effectively. The added bonus is that you make a big contribution to the war on pollution by both removing the need for chemicals in the first place, and also doing natures work

of biodegrading dirt in your home in the process of cleaning. This happens every time you clean with PROBAC. PROBAC is vital for the good health of your family and our natural environment. It makes sense, cleans brilliantly, and ‘doesn’t cost the earth®’.

MORE THAN BIODEGRADABLE: Most chemical substances tested for their ability to biodegrade are tested in perfect laboratory conditions. That means a relatively neutral pH, nutrient supply, and enough micro-organisms. But these conditions are rarely found in our natural environment. ‘Biodegradable’ chemicals may take much longer to biodegrade than claimed. PROBAC probiotics have a built-in biodegradation effect creating the ‘perfect conditions’ for biodegradation. This results in minimal chemical transfer into waste-water and the environment. Simply put – PROBAC effectively biodegrades its own chemical element.

WHY CHOOSE PROBAC? • • • • • • • • • •

Proven performance Low oral, dermal & Inhalation toxicity Low aquatic toxicity 100% Sustainable ingredients 100% Readily biodegradable ingredients Built in self-biodegrading mechanism No indoor pollution No volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) No toxic ingredients GOOD for septic tanks, biodigesters and grey water systems

THE PROBAC PRINCIPLE The PROBAC philosophy involves microbial management. This means a stable and healthy microbial community rather than a complete sterile environment. Probiotic microorganisms are used to achieve this. These are safe and useful bacteria, known for their health promoting properties and used for years in food and healthcare industry. PROBAC cleaning products are not disinfectants, but probiotic cleaners. PROBAC supplies a layer of probiotic bacteria on the surface that immediately consumes all remaining food sources, leaving nothing behind for potential pathogenic invaders looking for space and food. Because the probiotic bacteria stay active for up to three days, the cleaning procedure has a long lasting and stabilising effect. Even when applied sparingly, PROBAC will replace most pathogenic bacteria with good bacteria. Because pathogenic organisms aren’t resistant to PROBAC bacteria, the pathogenic organisms aren’t challenged to mutate into super-bugs. PROBAC Biologicals introduces a revolutionary and efficient concept of hygiene in the home and business, which is sustainable, good for the environment, and good for human health – the ultimate cleaning technology coupled with the ultimate green solution.

PROBAC Probiotics actively biodegrades organic dirt in the process of cleaning while also offering the unique benefit of on-going deep cleaning and odour control at a microscopic level. PROBAC mimics the natural process of biodegradation, establishing healthy bio-stability in your home or business, while cleaning and combating bad germs in a safe and sustainable manner. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

People are titillated by it, visually, it’s incredibly dramatic. You’re cooking on this slab of 500-millionyear-old salt. Mark Bitterman, author of Salt Block Cooking

COOKING WITH

Salt blocks are available from Wellness Warehouse in Kloof street for R130

SALT PLATES

It was at Makaron, a restaurant at Majeka House in Stellenbosch, the first time I came into contact with salt block cooking. A large salt block, heated on the stovetop, arrived at the table with a timer and a piece of raw salmon. The idea was to put the salmon on the salt for a few minutes each side and then eat it straight off the block. It was a novel and delightful experience and the salmon was delicious.

did you know? Salt Blocks have many culinary applications and is a growing trend used by foodies the world over. They can be used for grilling, curing, braaing, to serve on and as a chopping block. Everything from preserved lemons to ice-cream, watermelon and feta salad, Brie, roast chicken, calamari and more can be prepared on a salt block. 16

A

t room temperature they’re used to serve, season and cure; when heated, for baking, cooking and searing meats, fish and fruit; and when chilled, for ice cream and desserts. They work in the oven, on the stove top, on a braai or coals, on gas and can also be frozen for serving cold dishes. It is Himalayan salt of course, the beautiful pink-coloured salt filled with minerals. A blogger from The Italian Dish claims their popularity is for good reason.

“They impart a rich flavour to anything you cook on them and not just a salty flavour. The plates contain mineral deposits that add a richness that you can’t get with just salt.” helping you live life well

HEATING, COOLING & CLEANING TIPS When heating a salt block, heat it slowiy from room temperature. It will take about 45 minutes to get really hot. The heat will last for at least 20 minutes, enough time to sear or melt. Blocks should be cooled to room temperature before cleaning. Whatever you do, don’t clean them with water or put them in the dishwasher. All you do is wipe the block with a damp cloth, rubbing away any foodstuff left behind. Go over the surface until it’s clean then remove excess moisture with a clean dish towel. Air dry for a day before using again. The block is naturally anti-fungal and antibacterial. Keep your block away from moisture, humidity and heat.

PERFECTLY FLAVOURED

DRESSING FOR THE LEAVES

“Food will taste better,” said Bitterman. “The salt concentrates the flavour by drawing out moisture and, when used properly, the block leaves food ‘perfectly seasoned’,” he said. After using the block for a while you will learn which foods absorb more salt. Usually the drier foods absorb less and moist food absorbs more. A bit of oil can be used as a barrier and also to stop food from sticking. Vegetables, chicken and meat will pick up a delicate flavour and distinctive seasoning. The blocks don’t last forever but once they look a bit worn you can grind them down into salt for cooking or even bathing with.

“Fish is particularly delicious, it tastes like it’s just come from the sea.” SEARED SALMON & GRILLED ASPARAGUS Serves 2

This month our Paleo recipe is from The Real Meal Revolution published by Quivertree and involves wrapping a piece of white fish into a delectable flavour pocket.

A

fish pocket has a similar effect to poaching fish as it fills the fish with an infusion of flavour. It also means you aren’t restricted to cooking in the kitchen – pockets cook just as well on hot coals as they do in the oven.

1. 2.

THAI STEAMED FISH POCKET 3.

Serves 2 4.

INGREDIENTS 2 X 200G PORTIONS WHITE FISH (HAKE, COD, COB ETC) 200ML COCONUT CREAM 2 LIMES 2 TBS FISH SAUCE 1 TBS THAI CHILLI AND GARLIC SAUCE 1 TSP RED CURRY PASTE 2 SPRING ONIONS, FINELY CHOPPED 1 HANDFUL FRESH CORIANDER, ROUGHLY CHOPPED 2 SMALL HEADS BOK CHOI, HALVED LENGTHWAYS

5.

In a bowl, combine everything apart from the bok choi and the fish. Lay out two large sheets of heavy-duty foil, then lay two sheets of greaseproof paper on top of the foil. In the centre of each sheet, place two pieces of bok choi. Place a fish portion on top of each one and raise the edges of the foil to create a bowl. Pour half the sauce into each ‘bowl’ then scrunch the sides together to close the pocket. Place the pocket directly on the coals for eight minutes, or in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 12 minutes. To serve, plate the fish and pour over the sauce from the pocket.

NOTE YOU CAN USE THE SAME SAUCE POCKET RECIPE WITH PRAWNS OR MUSSELS.

This recipe comes from The Real Meal Revolution published by Quivertree and available at Wellness Warehouse Photo by Craig Fraser

SEE THE BENEFITS: ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Inflammation contributes to many common diseases, including diabetes and cancer. Moringa is a powerhouse of nutrients offering powerful anti-aging and antiinflammatory natural substances, many with anti-cancer properties.

IMMUNITY Research shows that Moringa is one of the most nutrient dense plants discovered to date. It has 46 antioxidants, 35 antiinflammatories, essential amino acids and Omega 3,6 & 9. All of these are vital for maintaining normal physiology.

PROTEIN Moringa has 27% of bio available plant based protein. It has all the essential amino acids the body needs (essential amino acids are those the body cannot synthesise, and must be supplied by the diet). Moringa’s incredibly high protein ratio makes it the perfect partner for pre or post workouts.

CHOLESTEROL & CIRCULATION Enzyme rich Moringa can help with the circulatory and cardiovascular systems. It reduces cholesterol levels and triglycerides (‘bad’ fats in the blood). As a natural appetite suppressant it’s good for weight control.

BLOOD GLUCOSE Poor diets contribute to the increase of diabetes. Moringa provides many of the nutrients that normalize bloodglucose levels and restore energy.

AYURVEDA Eastern Ayurvedic healers have used Moringa Oleifera for thousands of years in as many as 300 different disease conditions. Moringa was also used by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. Moringa is used for arthritis and other joint pain, asthma; cancer; constipation; diabetes; diarrhea; epilepsy; stomach pain; stomach and intestinal ulcers; intestinal spasms; headache; heart problems; high blood pressure; kidney stones; fluid retention; thyroid disorders; and bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections. EXTERNAL USE Moringa can be applied directly to the skin as a germ-killer or drying agent (astringent). It is also used topically for treating pockets of infection (abscesses), athlete’s foot, dandruff, gum disease (gingivitis), snakebites, warts, and wounds. Oil from moringa seeds is used in foods, perfume, and hair care products, and as a machine lubricant.

HOW DO I USE MORINGA? MORNING Spike your breakfast for much more energy. Add a spoon to your Greek yogurt, granola or museli, chopped banana, almond flakes and honey. Add Moringa to your scrambled eggs, top with tomato and eat with rye bread.

NOON Fix your guacamole by adding Moringa to your avocado mix. Sprinkle it on your salad or blend it into your salad dressing.

NIGHT Make a delicious stir fry with chicken, lentils, corn, quinoa and Moringa Add Moringa to your pasta sauce Mix it into frozen yogurt for an evening dessert.

did you know? Moringa is traditionally grown in Ghana but is also grown locally in South Africa using organic and sustainable farming methods. When making the powder, the leaves are dried in a special way to ensure there is no bitter taste. It can be used for power smoothies, mixed into yoghurt or sprinkled onto meals. Besides the powder, Moringa is available as capsules, powder, tea, and soap.

I absolutely love it when someone tastes one of our desserts and says, “But it doesn’t even taste healthy, it tastes like the real thing!”

Meet the Hungry Herbivores

Amy Scott and Brent Borman are the Hungry Herbivores. They’re a young couple with an incredible passion for food. They started The Hungry Herbivore in January 2014, aiming to show South Africans that food made with ‘real’ ingredients tastes amazing. And everything they make does, from the zuchinni pasta recipe they’ve shared with us (p. 27) to their delectable raw cupcakes made with cacao and organic vanilla. Amy says:

T

he Hungry Herbivore specialises in plant-based meals that use nutritious, fresh, natural ingredients. Nevertheless, they describe their meals as ‘comfort food’ and their gorgeous desserts, packed with superfoods, don’t only taste great but also have a purpose in the body.

“Ingredient transparency is on the top of our list. As we like to know exactly what we’re eating - so should you! Our motto is ‘Raw For More’ and we always try to honour that code by making fresh, real food available and abundant. It’s also a priority that our food suits every pocket.” How did two 20-year-olds end up starting a raw food business that’s already rocking the raw food movement in Cape Town in less than a year? Catherine Hayden reports.

Amy says

did you know? Raw green juice is rich in chlorophyll, a powerful antioxidant. It also balances the body’s pH by reducing acidity, which can zap energy.

26

I never used to consciously think about what I put into my body. I used to have migraines when I was younger but I never thought food might be the cause. While living abroad in Thailand, I ate a lot of unhealthy street foods and I snacked on highly processed foods from convenience stores. At one point I started having fried pork and rice for breakfast and my body just wasn’t happy. On my quest to start helping you live life well

eating a healthy breakfast I stumbled upon raw smoothies and wondered what ‘raw’ meant. I immediately realised my need for a lifestyle change and decided there was no better time to start than that same day. Thailand was the perfect location to start my journey with its ample supply of juicy, sweet fruit and traditional green papaya salad. The first few weeks were slightly tough as my body started to detox and I dealt with intense cravings, but it opened up a whole new world to me. I started to lose weight naturally, my skin cleared up and my headaches became less frequent. I became a firm believer in the power of natural, fresh food and I am convinced that our bodies can heal if we feed them with nutritious natural food. I’m on a continuous journey of learning and discovering what works for my individual body. We are all different and what works for me won’t necessarily work for everyone. Healthy eating can take time and planning. We all live such busy lives and sometimes convenience pushes health aside. Part of the Hungry Herbivore philosophy is to change that by making truly healthy food convenient for everyone. Amy Scott is coowner of The Hungry Herbivore. She is also a chef and photographer.

Brent says Apart from dealing with IBS (irritable bowel), I’ve never really had any serious health issues resulting from food. I’ve naturally always stayed away from sweets and fizzy drinks; but I used to be a compulsive ‘chipaholic’ and could finish a whole (large) bag of chips by myself in 10 minutes. While living and working in Thailand with Amy, I became addicted to all sorts of junk food snacks and it felt like my body was taking a huge hit mentally and physically. It was a ritual for me to have my work drawer stocked with goodies while marking students’ homework and I always felt like I was struggling to concentrate and just wanted to doze off at my desk. Once I started tasting Amy’s raw smoothies and juices, I started demanding my own portions because they tasted so good! At first I didn’t really pay that much attention to her newfound raw food lifestyle, but I started to notice that not only was her skin radiant but she just seemed well all

the time too. I wanted to know the reason for her wellbeing. I’m a naturally inquisitive person and I started researching the various ingredients Amy was using in her smoothies. It was then I started discovering all their health benefits. I realised that food should be about nourishing your body and you should know exactly what goes into it. I no longer want to put anything into my body that doesn’t serve a purpose and for the first time in my life, I feel like I am in control of my wellbeing. One of the main reasons for The Hungry Herbivore is to show people that food can taste really good and nourish the body at the same time. I absolutely love it when someone tastes one of our desserts and says, “But it doesn’t even taste healthy, it tastes like the real thing!” Brent is co-owner and brand manager of The Hungry Herbivore. Because of its tuckedaway location, problems with the prostate are often missed or misinterpreted.

PROTECTING YOUR

PROSTATE

By Dr Yesheen Singh

You might notice a whole lot more men growing moustaches during the month of November, that’s just one of the ways the Movember organisation uses to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. In recognition of this special month of Movember, we asked Dr Yesheen Singh to give us the basics on the prostate.

did you know? Movember is a leading global organisation committed to changing the face of men’s health. They’ve funded over 800 programmes in 21 countries that are saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate and testicular cancer. 32

T

he prostate is a walnut-sized gland. It’s found in men, just below the bladder. The urethra, a tube that connects bladder to penis, passes through the prostate on it’s way to the penis. It produces the bulk of the liquid present in semen, released when a man orgasms. This liquid nourishes and protects sperm. It is also very sensitive to touch, accessed through the anal canal, with many sexual health specialists declaring it the male equivalent of the female G-spot. The prostate is a hormone-sensitive gland – that means it changes its size and helping you live life well

level of functioning depending on the levels of testosterone and oestrogen in the body.

What can go wrong? Because of its tucked-away location, problems with the prostate are often missed or misinterpreted. Problems either relate to infections or enlargement. Infections of the prostate, also called prostatitis, will usually lead to sensitivity, frequent urination and pain on ejaculation. These are most often from either bacterial or viral infections.

bewell

integrative health

Enlargement is either benign (BPH), where it is simply an overgrowth of tissue from hormonal imbalances, or may be cancerous. Only a tissue biopsy can differentiate between the two. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate include:

• • •

trouble starting urination or a sense of urgency when urinating urination more frequently than normal, especially at night while urinating the stream either stop-starts in a fluctuating pattern or is a strain to produce

6 ways to safe-guard your prostate The prostate is part of your endocrine gland system, which also includes your thyroid, testes, adrenal and pancreas gland. What affects one will affect, in one way or another, all the other glands in this system. Keeping a healthy balanced body will support a healthy balanced prostate gland. 1. EXERCISE Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly are both essential. Research shows that exercise has a particularly positive benefit on the prostate, that’s because of increased blood and nutrient flow through the gland during exercise. 2. DIET Diet plays a central role in keeping your prostate healthy. Foods rich in antioxidants are important. They provide nutrients needed to produce the fluid for sperm preservation. They also help the body mop up and get rid of any stray pre-cancerous cells that may be lurking around. Include vegetables and fruit from every colour of the rainbow, especially the reds and greens. The lycopene in tomatoes, watermelons, grapefruit and guava’s are important, as are the isothiocyanates in broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts. 3. ADD NUTRIENTS Specific nutrients good for prostate health are zinc and selenium. Zinc can be found in high doses in oysters, crabs, wild game, spinach, pumpkin and squash seeds, cashews, raw cocoa, mung beans, clams and mushrooms. A great source

PROSTATE SUPPORT

A MAN’S

ZINC

of selenium comes from Brazil nuts, but it’s also found in herring, shellfish, eggs, sunflower and sesame seeds, cashews and garlic.

TARGETED DELIVERY OF ZINC TO THE PROSTATE GLAND, SUPPLYING PROTECTIVE, PREVENTATIVE NUTRITION TO SUPPORT PROSTATE HEALTH

4. AVOID SOY Soy is not the health food we are led to believe it to be. It contains fake oestrogen, called xenoestrogen, that upsets your internal hormone balance causing oestrogen dominance - not good for both men or women. This has a cascading negative effect on your testes, muscle activity, adrenal gland, liver health and prostate resilience. When choosing plantbased protein or milk options, go for soyfree varieties made from hemp or pea. 5. STOP SMOKING One of the most important changes you can make to help keep your prostate healthy is to stop smoking. Stopping smoking can be a life-changing or lifesaving decision. Men who smoke have a 61% increased risk of dying from prostate cancer than those who don’t smoke. Speak to your general practitioner about ways to quit the habit for good. 6. GET CHECKED Importantly, if you have a family history of prostate cancer - have an annual check to screen any potential cancerous growth. Prostate cancer is more often than not a slow-growing cancer but there are aggressive varieties that require biopsy to diagnose. Hopefully, by following the advice above, you won’t need to.

The prostate gland has 80x more Zinc than any other tissue - making it specially vital in male health. In A Man’s Zinc, the elemental Zinc is bound to the amino acid Arginine. Arginine and Zinc are both concentrated in the prostate gland at levels higher than they are found in any other tissue. The Arginine serves as an effective carrier to transport Zinc directly to the prostate gland, which in turn helps stimulate sperm production and prostate health. A Man’s Zinc is designed to protect the prostate from, or be part of the treatment for, benign prostatic hypertrophy. Both the Zinc and Phytosterols (plant sterols) in A Man’s Zinc have been shown to help reduce prostate enlargement, help stimulate sperm production, benefit prostate health & healthy cholesterol levels. Women’s Health Pharmacy FAQ Q: Is there anything I can do to prevent stretch marks? A: Stretch marks are very common in pregnancy. Stretch marks happen naturally as the skin stretches to accommodate your ‘baby bump’. They can also occur on other parts of the body like the hips and the breasts. Stretch marks can be prevented, though. Vitamin E is recommended, as is elastin, which is a protein that occurs naturally in the skin. Elastin improves the elasticity of your skin and helps to smoothe. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and helps protect your skin from free radical damage. It’s important to note that not all ingredients are safe for use during pregnancy. I tend to recommend Dermastine Pregnancy to moms-to-be who are concerned about the condition of their skin because it’s safe for use throughout pregnancy. Use Dermastine Pregnancy as early as possible for best results. Muneer Rahaman | Wellness Pharmacist (BPharm)

Power to the

PRESENT

By Dr Mark Vella

Create a new reality for yourself. Do this by choosing a new life vision, then living by design, both choosing the actions and emotional states that create that vision.

T

he power to create future change is in the present moment. The past is a memory and the future a possible dream. In the present moment, the things you ‘say’, ‘do’, ‘think’ and ‘share,’ are where you have power. It’s where ‘what you do’, ‘how you act’, and ‘what you say’ makes a difference. At no other time than the present, can you have any control over your destiny, and make your dreams possible. Steven Covey understood this very clearly when he chose ‘Be Proactive’ as the first principle, in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He explained that proactivity is most effective when you work on areas or things where there is real power to create change. By doing this, you expand the circle of influence in your own life and into the creation of your future. Bearing in mind as well, that you have no power over other people (at best you have influence) and the many things that happen in our day-to-day circle of concern. But you have power in how you respond to these situations. With this in mind, I’d like to share two habits to help you positively respond to life, and create more power in your present moment. People who use these two habits have lives that are clearly different from those who don’t practice them.

36

GRATITUDE Gratitude is a habit that shifts your world from a negative experience to a positive one. When you practice gratitude, the world goes from being half empty, to being half full. It makes the present moment a good place to be, one to cherish and enjoy, not one to regret, fear and avoid. More than that, as a positive emotion, gratitude expands the boundaries of your heart and mind, and changes your outlook on life. Shifting your perspective from a negative focus to a positive one, it opens you to new possibilities and new solutions you may not have seen before.

I would have probably kept pushing the same training strategy, hoping it would get me a better result. By adding these two habits as daily practice to your lifestyle, you will grow your power and influence to create the kind of life you actually want.

HOW CAN I USE THIS CONCEPT? Gratitude is cultivated by following a daily ritual of acknowledging things you are grateful for. Each morning in a journal write down 5 things you are grateful for and why. Even better, share with a partner or loved one.

REFLECTION If things that happen to you are viewed as pieces of information, then Reflection is the wisdom that comes from contemplating on those pieces of information. Cultivating this as a habit helps you gain knowledge, understanding and insight so you can learn from things that impact your everyday, and empower you to make better choices and changes. Without reflection you are likely to be none the wiser, and simply keep repeating the same old patterns and getting the same results. I used to run a lot, half marathons mainly. After each race, I’d reflect on my results and tweak my training programme, allowing me to improve my results as the years went by. If I didn’t go through a reflection process

heling you live life well

Reflection is best initiated by asking yourself a question, for example: 1. What did I learn here and how is it useful to me? 2. How does this new knowledge change my work or life? 3. What does this new knowledge show me about myself? 4. What is the lesson here? 5. Why is this information so important to me? 6. Why did this happen? 7. What did I do right or what could I have done better here? Dr Mark Vella is Director of the School of Lifestyle Medicine www.lifestylemedicine.co.za mark@ lifestylemedicine.co.za

Try and change the thoughts that lead up to anger. Remember thoughts lead to emotions, which lead to action.

CALMING THE

ANGRY PERSONALITY By Charissa Bloomberg

Anger can be a good thing. It’s a way of expressing negative feelings and motivating solutions to problems. But uncontrolled anger can be highly destructive. Psychologist Charissa Bloomberg chats about the angry personality and offers tips on how to overcome anger.

did you know?

The acronym HALT is a self-care tool used to help control emotions. HALT is a reminder to always make sure you are never Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. These conditions are triggers that can create heightened emotions. The acronym suggests stopping to check you have planned your life in a way that takes care of these needs and in doing so, safe-guards your state of mind.

38

I

ncidents of meltdowns, road rage and abuse frequently hit the press, many with devastating outcomes. If you struggle with anger issues, it might be time to do some soul searching and see if there are any positive changes you can make. Perhaps you get occasional road rage or you find yourself cursing at the news channel on telelvision, but if you have frequent and on-going rage issues, you may have something psychologists term ‘the angry personality’. This person will get angry at the smallest issue, without needing too much to provoke them.

helping you live life well

An angry parent will have a lasting impact on their family, especially on the kids. Children model parents behaviour and shouting and screaming can become the norm for them. This makes interpersonal relationships difficult.

FACTS ABOUT ANGER •

When we lose our temper, we are losing control. It’s like a small child having a tantrum.

This is called ‘loss of Impulse control’.

We all have impulses and we have the power to control the impulse, whether it is to eat, take drugs or get angry.

We need to take into account that when we get angry the body gets ready for flight or flight.

The hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary glands to release a range of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

The heart beats faster, blood pressure rises, the breath quickens, body temperature is raised and energy is released to help the crisis.

When the anger or issue is over, the body has to ‘come down’ and normalise.

If an individual loses their temper too often, over time this can lead to ‘burn out’ or what is known as ‘Adrenal fatigue’.

Burn out Symptoms: The early stages of burnout involve headaches, neck aches, aching limbs, dry mouth, continuous fatigue, constant irritability, stomach aches, dizziness, aching limbs. SUPPLEMENTING ANGER Make sure you aren’t deficient in vitamins and minerals. If you are deficient in calcium and magnesium you may react more readily to anger triggers. Calcium and magnesium can help with certain sleep difficulties and can also help calm emotions.

7 TIPS TO CALM ANGER

4. Get enough sleep, nutrition, exercise and practice self care. Keep your ego in check.

it’s difficult to reverse the situation, even if you apologise.

1. Know that you can choose how you feel.

5. Learn to communicate assertively without

9. Realise that you may not know what

getting aggressive. You can choose words that honour the person you are talking to even if you are communicating something hard. Find the delicate balance between being too passive and too aggressive.

someone else is going through and harsh words can do much more damage than you think especially to someone who is emotionally fragile. We often personalise things without realising that someone else may be acting irrationally and we don’t have to take it personally.

Events only elicit anger if we allow them to. It’s our choice as to how we interpret a situation. Be prepared, it’s in the few seconds before we lose control, when we tell ourselves how bad it is and give ourselves permission to ‘lose it’.

2. Try and change the thoughts that lead up to anger. Remember thoughts lead to emotions, which leads to actions. It all starts with the thought. Do this by reframing situations – try chatting through any triggers you have with a trusted close friend to get perspective.

3. Watch your levels of tension and know yourself well. Keep triggers at bay by avoiding situations that create anger in you. Loss of impulse control is part of emotional intelligence. You can up your level of emotional intelligence by learning how to manage yours and others’ emotions and knowing the impact our words and emotions have on others.

6.

Start working with positive self statements. This could include statements like: ‘I am in control’, ‘I choose not to give my power away to an angry outburst.’ ‘I will conquer this’.

7. Remember you have a choice. If someone is angry towards you, you can choose how to react. Letting go is not a sign of weakness. Remaining calm and empathising with the person’s angry feeling is an almost sure way to dispel their anger. Because anger fuels anger, if you return the angry feeling with anger it will amplify and escalate. 8. Take responsibility for your actions towards others. When reacting with anger,

10. Know yourself well and your capacity for stress. Avoid putting yourself in situations you know are going to push you over the edge. If you lose control too often, book a few sessions with a counsellor or life coach. Be aware that if anger isn’t worked through or released in a positive way; it turns inward to self destruction. This is evidenced in behaviour like road rage, taking drugs, drinking, ending relationships for no reason, and having a poor self image. I

haven’t always been healthy. Previously, I over-trained to get rid of stress, I drank too much, and had no time for people. I also forced myself towards definitions of success that, while accepted by society, seem to do a lot of damage to many. The fact is, you can look good and make money while at the same time, in an holistic sense, be on the brink of survival. The ugly truth is we’re not in a good place collectively, although we convince ourselves we are because, well, we have so many things, and we’re doing so much stuff. But try sit still for ten minutes with your eyes closed. You probably can’t, right? The movies in front of your eyes and the cacophony of voices in your head call your attention to everything except being okay with this very moment, here and now. Man, do we need to relax. But how? Why isn’t there a pill for whatever is causing us to be so manic all the time? That’s the real problem. There’s no magic bullet for stress and discontentment. Relaxation, like anything, requires practice. There are things you can do to be a better, more relaxed human, but oftentimes the ego and conditioned behaviour get in the way. That’s natural and it’s okay. Stick to it, and you’ll emerge feeling a lot better.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION First, pull back and look at yourself. Chances are, amongst the busyness, you’ve lost your centre - that feeling that everything is actually okay and working the way it must. Before you can find it, acknowledge that your quest is worthy. Give yourself permission to relax, to take time to explore your body and mind. Otherwise, all you’ll be telling yourself is that you could be putting in a load of washing or watching Game of Thrones.

BREATHE, STRETCH, SIT Or, in yogic terms: Pranayama, Asana, Meditation. Pranayama is controlled breath. Stress forces our sympathetic nervous system (the ‘fight or flight’ response) to kick in, and our bodies spend their days reacting as if we are running away from a sabretoothed tiger. Long-term stress responses suppress our sexual, digestive and immune systems, and leave us exhausted.

Boxall & Carmichael FEMME / HOMME PLUS 750mg/serving Veg Caps 60’s

BREATHE Controlled breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, oxygenates the body, and calms the mind. Kapalbhati breaths (short, sharp exhalations through the nose) clear out the lungs and the nasal passages and increase oxygen uptake. Do three rounds of thirty breaths each. Follow this with three rounds of Anulom vilom (alternate nostril breathing). Slowly breathe in through the right nostril, and out through the left. Then in through the left, and out through the right. Do three sets of ten, breathing deeply into the abdomen, not the chest.

STRETCH Asanas are yoga postures and excellent for balancing and strengthening the body. Our bodies carry so much stress (especially in our shoulders and hips), that stretching and toning helps both our flexibility and our mental state, leaving us calmer and more balanced. You don’t need to be flexible or strong, simply decide to get on the mat, whether in front of a YouTube video or in a structured class.

SIT Meditation is available to anyone. You don’t have to sit, you can also meditate while making tea, walking or swimming. It simply means being absorbed and aware of the moment you are in and not following the mind as it trundles off on a tangent. Focus your attention on the breath, it will links you to the present moment. When your mind wanders (and it will), be aware it’s wandering, and gently remind yourself you are thinking. Then, return to just focusing on your breath, or your step, or your stroke. Eventually, your mind will quieten. Eventually.

Eat for Balance

Know Your Thoughts

Be Compassionate

Fad diets aim at fast weight loss and so by definition cannot promote balance. The goal should be feeling good in your skin (not just looking thinner). Food has become the repository for so much of our neuroses: we have to cook like a master chef, feed our children the latest expert recommendations, avoid GM, promote organic, eat less meat and more raw. What should be a symbol of community, of life and love and shared experience, has become a tricky ordeal. Use common sense, and truly listen to your body (not the neurotic voice in your head that yells out ‘coffee and chocolate’ all the time). Your body knows what it needs.

What you think becomes you. If your default reactions are fear-based you won’t experience the highest joys life can offer. For life is just the path of the pendulum as it swings from pain to pleasure and back again; those polarities are simply different sides of life’s coin. You can train yourself to think positively, to react with kindness and an open heart. You can ask the universe for the life you want, and when you let go of the fear and attachment of how it comes to pass you will surely be happier. The Latin phrase temet nosce is oft repeated, but to truly know yourself is difficult, yet a prerequisite to being a better human.

Improve Your Posture

Treat Yourself Well

Proper posture improves blood-flow, and boosts confidence. It relieves tense muscles and prevents back pain. When working at a desk, sit straight, and have stretching and walking breaks. When walking, walk tall, and let the shoulders relax. Lift your chin. It is worth remembering that your body will take on that form which you (consciously or not) spend most of your time in, so it is better not to twist yourself into injurious shapes.

You are already everything you need to be, you just have to remember it. Rather than spoiling yourself with expensive distractions, learn to be kind to yourself. Drop self-admonishment and smile in acceptance of yourself. This is our biggest challenge, as we tend to believe negative framing around us. You are enough. Believe it.

First to yourself, and then to others. We continually pass each other as we rush from one thing to the next, seeking connection but struggling to find it. We are all deeply flawed, and yet also startlingly unique and wonderful beings. Recognising that we are just like everyone (and everything) else, and there really is no ‘other’, is the starting point in personal evolution. We can’t get there without being compassionate, without allowing others to feel safe in experiencing their joys and fears, their highs and their lows. Truly listening and witnessing another person, is the most powerful experience we can share with another human being. Learn to listen, to be compassionate. By changing another life you will change your own.

The moon replenishes the Earth when she approaches it, and she fills all bodies. When she recedes, she empties them. Pliny, the Roman naturalist, author of Natural History

Lunar Planting By Nicole Sochen

Many people practice lunar planting, they believe following moon phases helps improve plant growth and increases production and vitality. If humans, the ocean and animals can be affected by the full moon, why not plants too?

did you know? The moon circles around the earth in about 29 days. The moon month starts with the new moon that appears to get bigger every night as it waxes and sheds more light until it becomes full. The waning period starts after the full moon and decreases in light up to the next new moon.

M

oon planting refers to the theory of gardening according to the different phases of the moon. Devotees known as ‘moon gardeners’, ‘moon sowers’ or ‘lunar phase gardeners’ believe the lunar cycle – and the powers or astrological placing of the moon - has a direct effect on the growth of plants.

The theory of moon planting is grounded on several elements. 1. The earth is a large gravitational field influenced by both the sun and the moon. Lunar changes cause distortions in the earth’s magnetic field which can encourage or limit plant growth. •

46

The waxing phase is regarded as a good time to sow seeds and do activities that stimulate plant growth - seed germination, seedling development, and later, growth of the helping you live life well

above ground parts of the plant – the leaf, flower, fruit and seeds. •

The waning phase is good for early root development; it helps it absorb water and nutrients. Because of this, it’s regarded as a good time to plant root crops, transplant seedlings and do divisions.

The full moon is a good time to make root cuttings.

The last quarter running up to the new moon is a phase that signifies rest so the idea is to focus more on garden maintenance. This is a time for composting, fertilising, transplanting and pruning plants to reduce growth. It’s also a time for harvesting – of root crops for optimum taste and quality, and of fruit, seed and other leaves for processing (drying and preserving). During this time water content above ground is reduced which helps prevent produce from spoiling or rotting.

livewell do it yourself

2. The moon governs the earth’s moisture. Just as the moon affects the level of the oceans – tides are highest at the time of the new and full moon (when the sun and moon are lined up with earth) – it also affects the level of ground water. A full moon causes moisture to rise in the earth. Any newly-sown seeds will be boosted by the increased hydration, and the accompanying nutrients and photochemicals, they need for growth. 3. The amount of light reflected from the sun by a full moon is also believed to affect growth: •

THE HISTORY OF LUNAR PLANTING Besides resting on scientific facts like the earth being a gravitational field, the concept of moon planting is rooted in ancient folklore and can be traced back for centuries. •

Flowering bulbs and vegetables that bear crops below ground are more successful during the dark phase (waning or full to before new moon). Flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground prefer the light phase (waxing or new to full moon).

4. Some gardeners also believe that certain astrological signs are barren and dry, while others are wet and fertile, and even more are in between. The astrology influences the types of tasks that should be done and the type of plants that should be planted when the moon is in a particular sign: •

after. So plants sown in the few days before a full moon become stronger and more productive, and those sown as the moon is waning tend to be less so.

Root crops like turnips are said to do well when the moon is in so-called earth signs like Taurus and Capricorn. Leaf plants like lettuce and cress do best when the moon is passing through water signs like Pisces and Scorpio.

5. Another supporting theory is that male energy (the yang) is strongest in the last two days before a full moon, while female (the yin) energy is more prevalent two days

Get all your garden essentials from

Pliny the Elder, the 1st century Roman naturalist, stated in his work, Natural History, that the moon ‘replenishes the Earth; when she approaches it, she fills all bodies, while, when she recedes, she empties them’. Ancient Hawaiians believed that tubers (such as sweet potatoes) had to be planted on the third, fourth, fifth or sixth day of the new moon to make sure the crops would grow upright and be firm. Ancient Hawaiians also gathered medicinal plants only during the third and fourth days following the full moon.

While there aren’t any certified scientific studies on moon gardening you only need to speak to your local nursery or surf the internet to hear that many people around the world swear by it – and have done so for centuries. Whether you decide to plant according to the phases of the moon or to the astrological timing the proof can only be in the planting – why not try it out and come to your own conclusion.

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul Jacobson owner of Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition

BANTING DIET FOR DOGS The true judge of whether a diet is ‘perfect’ for dogs or humans is if it provides the correct pH balance. This means a diet that’s more alkaline in the body. The Banting Diet, promoted by Professor Tim Noakes, when followed correctly, should lean towards alkalinity. Often his proposed diet is misunderstood. Rather than a high protein diet, he advocates a high fat diet with low refined carbohydrates. His diet and recipes have lots of predominantly alkaline vegetables that balance protein acidity. In June 2014, a landmark study conducted by animal science researchers in California,

48

demonstrated that feeding dogs fresh, healthy, whole food diets instead of highly processed kibble and cans, improved general health. Whether preparing diets for pets or humans, the same considerations apply. A Banting Diet for Dogs is a perfectly sound concept. Looking at the ingredients in commercial pet foods made up into pellets or in kibble form, it’s quite clear why they aren’t healthy. Their main ingredients are refined carbohydrates - brewers rice, wheat and corn gluten, potato meal, soya meal, and animal meal. These carbs are mostly ‘highly acidic’ and create a net acidic effect. The same argument follows for diets with copious amounts of processed meat (raw or cooked). In the last few years, a trend of feeding pets a diet of mostly raw meat. Most meat from supermarkets is processed and is acidic. A highly acid diet can create inflamed cells, reduced

helping you live life well

immunity and lead to health conditions like skin disorders, arthritis and the formation of kidney stones. Professor Tim Noakes suggests a dietary plan high in fat, medium protein and low in refined carbs. He prefers ‘real foods that look like what they are, and cooked from scratch’. So, whether preparing a meal for just you, for your family or your four-legged companion members, I recommend the Banting Diet, for everyone. REVIEWS

Food is a central feature during the festive season. If you love baking, want to bring your family together, if you want to braai with a bit more creativity or revolutionise the way you think about food, read on.

Cooking In The Photographer’s House by Lynn & Obie Oberholzer (Jacana)

Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Boozy Tiramisu each recipe is more decadent than the last. Photographs show Sarah Dall’s recipes in a wonderfully creative and immaculately styled fashion. Favourite childhood recipes and comfort food is all there, but with the special Dall touch to give it real foodie glamour.

The Sunfood Diet Success System by David Wolfe (North Atlantic Books)

This substantial treasure trove of recipes is a true celebration of how home cooking blends and binds families. Heartwarming and homely recipes have the feeling of being tried and tested many times over. Ingredients and instructions are spiked with stories of travels and adventures. Falafel chickpea patties take you into a bazaar in Cairo while the Spinach Filo triangles transport you to a harbour in Alexandripoulos. Lynn has little notes and tips that make you feel like you are reading a family recipe book that’s been cherished and carefully recorded for a new generation. Her cooking is peasant style and emphasises quality raw ingredients. It has recipes for everything from vegetable dishes to meat, fish, sauces, sides and desserts. Fabulous photographs add to the intimacy of this delightful cookbook.

Girls On Fire by Camilla Comins (Russel Wasserfall Food) Toss out the boring braai standards and bring in some new ideas with Camilla’s creative guide to braais. Although you may

50

need to implement some of her recipes on your cheat day, lots of them fit the Banting lifestyle. Artichoke and grilled Chicken Salad; Beetroot with Cumin Yoghurt; Pea Salad; Spanish Calamari Potjie are just some of the recipes. Look out for Pie on the braai and Beer and Bean Pot, both comfort food favourites. Where traditionally, men tend to braai, Comins encourages women to take over and gives good tips on lighting fires and nursing coals.

For The Love Of Baking by Sarah Dall (Struik Lifestyle)

This is a book that definitely doesn’t fit into the ‘free-from’ eating trend but it brings back the beautiful tradition of baking. From Gran’s Famous Rusks to Vanilla scones, Nutella Cupcakes, Lemon Curd Mousse, everything you need to live life well

They call him David ‘Avocado’ Wolfe, he’s the rock star of the superfood and longevity world. This book is said to drop away unwanted pounds, boost immunity, enhance relationships, lengthen life and bring you closer to spiritual understanding. It covers everything from the principle of life transformation to karma and wild, hybrid and alkaline food. David speaks about raw food, breathing and the physiology of excellence. He also has a weekly diet guideline and menu plan. It is a fascinating and highly illuminating book offering a fabulous new way of thinking about food. As fellow author Gabriel Cousens says, “David Wolfe, in a beautifully authentic way, plants the awareness of the power of a live-food diet and healthy thinking that is transforming to each individual and to the very planet itself.” The book is available on order from Amazon.

Stop making resolutions and just start something. - Minessa Martin

Transform YOUR LIFE

Minessa Martin had her health ‘ah-ha’ moment at Kirstenbosch Gardens. Feeling exhausted from a short walk, she looked up at Table Mountain and realised she was too out of shape to enjoy the hikes in the natural beauty that so many Capetonians take for granted. This was the start of her journey towards a healthier and better life.

S

ince then Minessa has lost 30kg through a programme run by SleekGeek. She’s run three races, something she thought she’d never be able to do. More importantly she’s happier, healthier, and fitter, and she’s learnt some important lessons about living life well along the way.

Have you always had a rocky relationship with food? As a youngster I never struggled with my weight. I’m a naturally energetic person and was active as a child. I ate whatever I wanted to, and as much as I wanted to. When I grew up, things changed. I gained some weight when I left school. My diet changed with my lifestyle and I started living like a student – I ate unhealthily and partied. The real change in my weight came on my journey to becoming a mom, though.

52

I suppose I used my pregnancy as an excuse to eat unhealthy food. I’d have chocolate for breakfast – more like three chocolates, actually – on my way to work. By the time I’d had my second child I was 32kg heavier than I was in high school. The loss of my father also affected me deeply. I ate emotionally, and the more I ate the worse I felt… the worse I felt, the more I ate. It was a vicious circle. Ironically, at the same time, my mother’s weight was fluctuating too. She became morbidly obese. In the small Afrikaans community I lived in, though, my shape wasn’t unusual. I weighed 80kg for my 1,6m body. I didn’t feel great.

Tell us about the ups and downs in your weight... helping you live life well

I’ve had quite a few ups and downs. There was a time I was far too thin and weighed only 46kg. Hungry, skinny and bony, I saw myself as the perfect size. There were times I wouldn’t eat at all and remember feeling fit then, even though I was actually exhausted. In reality when I tried to go running at one point I had to turn back after only 200m.

When did things change for you? In October last year I visited Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town with friends for lunch. Looking up at the mountain, seeing the trails people hiked, I realised I was in trouble. Just walking from the car to our picnic spot left me exhausted, trying to catch my breath. This was a light bulb moment for me. I realised I had to make a change.

movewell

fitness, sleep & massage

How did you come across SleekGeek? I found SleekGeek on Facebook. I like to think SleekGeek found me, though. They say when the student is ready, the teacher will come, and I was ready. I did a bit of research and found out about Reboot (a free 30-day programme where you make certain changes in your diet and lifestyle to ‘reboot’ your life), which I started almost immediately.

How did you set realistic goals for yourself? SleekGeek is all about setting realistic goals that help you make positive changes in your life. I desperately needed to start exercising, so my goal was to run. I didn’t like running, which made my goal that much more of a challenge. I started by walking, though, which was more realistic for me. With the help of SleekGeek I started a few ‘SmartGoals’ (goals that push you but are achievable) and before I knew it I was

running 5km and then 10km. By December 2013 I boldly said I was going to do a halfmarathon by the end of April 2014. I did it. I also reached my target weight in March this year, which I couldn’t have done without the Reboot support group.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learnt on your SleekGeek journey? Setting realistic goals is very important when you’re looking to lose weight, get fitter, and change your life for the better. Without understanding that SleekGeek is a process and working at my own pace I wouldn’t have reached my goals. I’m now happier and healthier than I’ve ever been. I would recommend participating in a SleekGeek 8 Week Challenge to anyone as a powerful way to kick-start new, healthy, habits.

did you know? Exercise or diet? Although cutting calories seems to be a more effective way of losing weight than exercising harder, exercise builds muscle which gives you a higher metabolic rate. So, if you have to choose one, choose both! Eat smaller portions, eat healthier food, and move more. Exercise will help you burn energy faster, increase feel-good brain chemicals, and improve your outlook on life – making it easier to meet your other healthy living goals.

FIND YOUR SPOT

The Earthchild Project teach a wonderful practice to children that’s pertinent and relevant to anyone. It includes finding a ‘sitspot’ and tuning in... Earthchild explains.

W

e believe children will not be inspired to care for the environment unless they first feel a deep love and connection to the earth. This can sometimes seem like an abstract concept and so it helps to have practical exercises to nurture this connection. The ancient American Indian tradition of finding a ‘sit spot’ is one example of a simple and yet very powerful way to do this.

A Sit Spot is a place you can go to often, to spend time alone, quietly paying attention. As Jon Young, founder of the Wilderness Awareness School says, “Find one place that you get to know really, really well. This is the most important routine you can develop. Know it by day, know it by night; know it in the rain and in the snow, in the depth of winter and in the heat of the summer. Know the stars and where the four directions are in your spot. Know the birds that live there, know the trees they live in. Get to know these things as if they were your relatives, for, in time, you will come to know that they are!”

How to choose your sit spot? Find a place close to your home, where you feel safe, and that has some exposure to the natural world. It could be a single tree, your back garden, your apartment balcony or part of your favourite mountain trail… the most important thing is choosing a place you will realistically go to, so convenience is key!

30 Day sit spot challenge Begin a regular ‘Sit Spot’ practice by committing 20 minutes a day in your chosen place for 30 days in a row. Sit there quietly and simply pay attention… notice the exposure to the elements, the changing leaves, emerging blossoms, the length of the shadows and the surrounding plant and animal life. Listen to the sounds, listen to your breath, listen to your heart.

Carve out quality time when you are physically and emotionally present with your child so they feel heard and worthy of your positive attention.

Naturally

Calm Kids

By Catarina Andrade

With the hectic pace of the world, many children struggle to stay in a calm zone. By helping your children cultivate a sense of calm at an early age, you’ll not only be a happier parent, but you’ll be laying an important foundation as they grow older. Here are 15 ways to introduce more peace and calm into your children’s lives.

1. Prioritise Sleep Lack of sleep is a recipe for edginess at any age. Establishing good sleep habits from a young age is essential so make this a priority in the first few years of your child’s life. A soothing and predictable bedtime ritual that includes a warm bath helps children unwind and get ready for dreamland.

2. Massage it Out Trials from the Touch Research Institute, shows infants and children who receive massage therapy have fewer stress behaviours and reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Massage is a great way to bond with your little one and help them relax, while also relaxing yourself. Follow your baby or toddler’s lead to find out when they are most receptive to massage and for how long.

3. Calm the senses Chamomile and lavender essential oils have a calming effect, benefiting both you and your child. From three months of age onwards, put one to three drops of oil in your baby’s nighttime bath or on their favorite blanket or toy. This will help soothe their senses. After time they will associate these scents with feelings of comfort and

56

security, and you can use them to reduce anxiety in times of heightened stress, like during air travel.

4. Hold them Close Nothing comforts a child more than being held by a parent. Wear a baby carrier, wrap or sling to create a calm and safe space when the busy outside world drives them into sensory overload. When they are older, a momentary embrace helps them feel safe and release stress.

5. Pay Attention Children often act out to get parental attention, starting as early as toddlerhood. Carve out quality time when you are physically and emotionally present with your child so they feel heard and worthy of your positive attention. Spend this time with them doing things they enjoy and avoid distractions like checking your phone.

6. Furry Friends If you don’t have a family fur baby, identify other ways for your children to interact with animals. Research shows that even brief interactions with animals affect hormones like oxytocin and cortisol, making individuals of all ages happier and more relaxed. helping you live life well

7. Eat for Calm Remove foods known to contribute towards hyperactivity in children - sugar, caffeine and certain additives - and replace them with grounding wholefoods. A good starting point is to reduce carbonated beverages and bottled juices and replace with water, herbal teas, and homemade juices or smoothies. Keep an eye out for food sensitivities and nutrient deficiencies as these also affect behaviour.

8. Zen time Meditation helps children return to a place they feel safe, secure, peaceful and focused. Learning to cope with stress is an important part of development, and teaching your child to meditate empowers them to manage stress. Guided meditation books and audios are available for children of all ages. Giving kids a special object to hold during meditation can help them tune in more easily.

9. Kids Yoga Yoga is calming and can help develop concentration, focus, and self-awareness from a young age. Use a fun book or yoga cards to teach them yourself so you can practice as a family. My Daddy is a Pretzel

by Baron Baptiste is a popular book for this. They key is to make the introduction fun, using stories and games and drawing on nature and animals.

10. Channel energy Give children many outlets to channel their energy into. Physical activity and getting outdoors helps children relax. Give them an outlet for their creative energy through art, music, singing, dancing, or projects like creating vision boards or putting on theatre shows for the family.

11. Lead by example Research shows the level of stress in family life directly impacts how kids learn to deal with stressful situations. Irritable and stressed out children are usually mirroring what they are experiencing at home. Bring peace into your child’s life by leading by example and making a conscious effort to welcome a calm disposition into your life and home. Model healthy stress management by practicing yoga or meditation. Tell them what you’re doing and why.

12. Beat the Rush Make your day much calmer by being extra organised in the morning. Do this by preparing the night before. Create less pressurised evenings by preparing meals in advance over the weekend. A batch of quinoa lasts several days and can be repurposed into many meals.

did you know? Parental stress can be passed on to children with long term effects. Stress in pregnant women has been linked to anxiety, autism and ADHD in children, and research led by Michael Kobor from the University of British Columbia has shown day-to-day stress in early childhood can predict changes in DNA observed into adolescence.

13. Switch Off Leave work stress behind by practicing deep breathing on your way home. If you work from home, walk outdoors at the end of the day to signal a transition out of work mode. Walking through the front door in a more peaceful state of mind will help you stay calm in the face of challenging parenting moments.

14. Laugh More Laughing is an easy and powerful way to reduce stress and has many other health benefits. Try laughter yoga or join in whenever anyone happens to be deep belly laughing nearby.

15. Focus on Yourself Once a month take five minutes to reflect on the main stressors in your life and identify three steps to restore balance in these areas. Also, create child-free ‘me time’ routinely and do something you enjoy. By actively cultivating inner peace and happiness, you will naturally pass these qualities on to those around you, as well as respond more lovingly when kids are niggly.

DID YOU KNOW? Children are subjected to stress and anxiety at earlier and earlier ages. A 2013 Stress in America report found that teenagers surpassed adults as the most stressed population in the United States. This is concerning as an extensive body of research from Harvard University and other leading institutions shows that prolonged activation of stress response systems in children, in particular the brain, can negatively impact healthy development, including: • Learning, cognitive ability and short-term memory • Behaviour and temperament • Blood sugar levels, weight and digestive health • Overall health across lifetime Catarina Andrade is a Cape Town based health and happiness coach and laughter yoga leader who helps busy women create more time and energy to get everything done with less stress and more balance. A good mom is a priceless gift to her children. She is both a soft nurturing sanctuary and a fierce protective shield.

The single mom

By Craig Wilkinson

Raising a child as a single mom or with a disengaged man is one of the greatest challenges a woman can ever face.

did you know? According to the SA Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR), only 33% of children in South Africa live with both their parents. Single-parent households have become the norm in South Africa, with nearly 100 000 children living in child-headed households.

T

o meet all the daily needs children have - physical, emotional and spiritual - as the only present and engaged parent requires almost superhuman effort. Trying to have a life, while balancing work and children, leaves many women feeling like they can never do what’s required. Added to this, moms often feel the pain of their child’s cry for their dad’s presence and involvement in their life. Fortunately there are several things moms can do to raise strong and emotionally whole sons and daughters in spite of an absent or disengaged father. Moms are one of the greatest treasures of the universe. Miracle workers and magic makers, no-one exemplifies grace and beauty more than a mom in action. The sweet, healing balm of a mother’s love touches every aspect of her child’s life. It soothes bruised egos, restores broken

hearts, lifts up discouraged souls, and feeds hungry tummies. So many men and women are who they are today because of a selfless, loving and wise mom. One of the greatest betrayals of this century is men who fail to play their role as father alongside the mother of their children. Children need both a mom and a dad. Working in unspoken tandem the masculine and feminine soul weave together the magic that it takes to raise boys to be men and girls to be women. When one is missing the whole is affected. And all too often it is the masculine that goes awry or AWOL and it’s the mom left carrying the burden of raising her children with limited or no support. Men who are absent or disengaged betray not just their children but the women who entrusted them with the joint care of their children. Because the focus of the damage caused by absent or disengaged fathers is on their children, moms are often the

eco mom & baby

unacknowledged victims of a father’s dereliction. An absent or abusive dad is the ultimate betrayal. A dad who is present in body yet not heart and hand is slow poison to his family. The first thing a mom can do is to realize that you are the most important and influential woman in your children’s lives. You are your daughter’s primary role model and your son’s first and most profound experience of a woman. Being a great mom doesn’t just happen by default, it requires intention. Not just in learning how to be a mom but in learning how to be a woman because it is out of womanhood that motherhood flows. Knowing and embracing your own femininity and being fully alive as a woman is the starting point of being a great mom. A mom who is whole and confident in who she is will impart wholeness and confidence to her children. Every man and woman carries some hurt or another from the experience of growing up and these wounds affect how we parent. Moms are no exception. Motherhood is a parallel journey of growing in wholeness and freedom as a woman, while you raise your children to become men and women. The second crucial thing for moms is to understand what makes the masculine and feminine soul tick. Boys and girls are different and what each need from their mom is different. The more you understand the different needs and drivers of the masculine and feminine soul the better equipped you will be to meet their unique needs. Understanding the feminine soul will assist you in your own journey as a woman and will enable you to impart to your daughter all she needs to grow up into a strong, independent woman with a healthy attitude towards herself, life and men. By understanding what makes the masculine soul tick and the role you need to play in its development, you can create an environment in which your son will grow and flourish. You will know when to let go, how and when to involve other men in your son’s life and how to deal with his growing masculinity. Thirdly because a mom’s life is so influential on her children she needs to model the right attitudes and behaviours. One of the implications of this is that no matter how badly you have been treated or let down by men you need to maintain a positive attitude towards them. By harbouring

resentment you will unconsciously and unwittingly devalue your son and impart to your daughter damaging beliefs about men. The way a mom lives her life shapes a boy’s attitudes towards women and greatly influences the kind of woman he will marry one day. The way a girl’s mom interacts with men and in particular her father deeply affects the way she perceives men and what she will consider acceptable in her future relationships. It takes courage and sacrifice to raise children well and never more so than when you are doing it alone. The world owes a massive debt of gratitude to brave woman throughout history who have given so much of themselves to raise their children without the physical, emotional and financial support of their children’s father. The sheer overwhelming collective goodness dispensed by moms every day make this world an infinitely better place. Yet in a world in which more children than ever are growing up in single parent homes moms face the formidable challenge of empowering themselves to be great moms. Moms who know, understand and live their femininity, while at the same time understanding, appreciating and affirming the masculine, in spite of how wrong it has so often gone. By understanding these principles you will enhance your parenting journey, equip your children and empower your own life journey.

If our eyes saw souls instead of bodies imagine how different our ideals of beauty would be.

Summer BEAUTY

Rather than a strict detox that’s hard to stick to, follow some natural cleansing guidelines – you may want to make some of them into permanent lifestyle practices.

R

emoving toxins from the body is almost as important as eating a diet full of nutrients. It’s also important to replace toxic thoughts with enriching good one’s. 1. Do a morning meditation with the purpose of cleaning out your thoughts. Concentrate on letting go of limitations, restrictions, doubts, fears and worries and make mental images of amazing things to replace negative thoughts. 2. Before you think of a morning tea or coffee, first have an alkalinizing cup of hot lemon water. You will immediately gear your body up for a day of healthy habits. 3. Fill up 2, one litre bottles of water and put one in your car and one on your desk or wherever you spend most of your day. 4. Buy a beautiful teapot, one you absolutely love. Keep a pot of green, Rooibos, Burdock, Echinacea or any other detox tea filled up and ready to drink. Consider getting a teapot warmer and a tea cosy.

60

5. Buy replacements for all your weaknesses. If it’s coffee, get some Chai Tea, if it’s sugar get some stevia or Xylitol, if carbs are your downfall try having protein rich quinoa to feel satiated. If you can’t resist bread, fall in love with Essene bread instead. 6. Every time you want something that’s not part of your new cleansing programme, breathe the craving or desire away with some deep inhales and exhales. 7. Get a yoga or exercise app on your phone to motivate you or call up five friends you haven’t seen for ages and schedule a walking date for the next five days with each one of them. However you do it, make sure you get some form of exercise into your schedule. 8. Be kind to your liver by taking a detox supplement. Choose something like Milk Thistle, Licorice, Ginger, Garlic, Chlorella, Dandelion root or ask your health practitioner what’s best for you.

helping you live life well

9. Add at least one fibre rich food to your daily intake. Chia seeds, flaxseed, beans, broccoli, almonds are all good options. 10. Limit something from your diet – removing refined sugar will definitely benefit you but you may also want to try a diary free or wheat free week and see how you feel.

FEET FIRST Surveys show most men look at women’s feet when assessing a potential attraction. Something about the arches and natural curves in feet give them built-in appeal that exudes femininity. Women too, look at men’s feet, both for cleanliness and sex appeal. Neuro-researchers have pointed out that the neurons in the brain that have to do with sensations in the foot are close to the neurons that have to do with sensations in sexual areas. Whether this has any relevance, we don’t actually know. What is certain though is that feet get more attention than most people realise and keeping them in top condition is a great grooming practice to cultivate. The best way to do that is give them a little massage after your bath or shower. Here are some fabulous balms, oils and creams you can make up and use to keep your feet soft and well moisturized.

Olive-oil & lemon juice

Paraben free SLS free

Make your own hydrating cracked-heel lotion by mixing one tablespoon of olive oil with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Whip them up into a smooth milky solution. Apply generously all over your feet and massage in well. This will prevent dryness and remove dead skin.

try and keep going for five minutes per foot. If your feet are seriously cracked, first soak them in warm water for 15 minutes.

Honey

Honey is one of the best moisturising products you will find in your kitchen. Mix half a cup of honey in two litres of lukewarm water. Soak your feet in this mixture for 20 minutes. After soaking, use a pumice stone to scrub your feet before rinsing with water. Your feet will transform and become soft and supple. Repeat this once a week for maintenance.

Glycerin & Rose water Mix 3-4 drops of glycerin in one tablespoon of rose water. Put this on your feet before going to bed. You may want to wear socks to seal in the moisture overnight. Apply this treatment every night for a week and see the results.

Rice flour Rice flour makes a great exfoliant for dry and cracked heels. Mix one tablespoon of rice flour with two tablespoons of honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix together well and use this to scrub your feet gently,

A few things you didn’t know about...

Happiness

Sleep your way to smiles

Not getting enough sleep has been found to increase appetite, decrease productivity, and make you anxious and moody. If you want to feel happier, put getting enough sleep at the top of your list. Most people need eight hours a night. Make a comfy mattress, a great pillow, and organic cotton sheets that breathe, a priority.

Get a little sun

Exposing your skin to the sun to get vitamin D improves mood and can boost energy. One study showed that people who tanned had increased levels of β-endorphins (neurotransmitters that make you feel good). The Vitamin D Council says that in Cape Town you can’t produce much vitamin D between mid-May and August. In Johannesburg you can produce enough vitamin D naturally from the sun year-round. This doesn’t mean you should start tanning! Stay safe, but do spend a little time outdoors in the sun.

Move it!

Regular activity could make you happier for years to come. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology said that at the start of the study, being physically active was associated with 85% higher odds of being happy. Those who weren’t active at the start of the survey were 45% more likely to be unhappy four years later than those who were. This suggests that exercise doesn’t just boost your mood in the short term but has long-term positive effects on the way you feel. That’s good news.

A little help from your friends

Spending more time with friends and family can make you happier. George Valiant, the director of a 72-year study of the lives of 268 men, was asked in an interview what he learnt from the men he studied. His answer was: ‘That the only thing that really matters in life is your relationships to other people.’
