MEET WARREN & GAVIN GOODMAN, THE TWO BROTHERS FROM WAZOOGLE SUPERFOODS Developing a business from Superfoods came as a surprise to the enterprising brothers both of whom live with the passion and power that emanates from their superfood brand. Living an athletic life and loving health required a highly energizing breakfast that was practical and intensely nourishing. Warren, having avidly researched health and wellness for years put together a potion that was so powerful he had friends and acquaintances urging him to supply them. When the demand became overwhelming, he formalized production, took it to a larger scale and the Wazoogles range of organic vegan, superfood protein shakes is the result. Gavin happens to be a whiz photographer and marketer and besides everything else he does in the business, shares amazing information, recipes and pics with their followers. Wazoogles is run on passion, gratitude and conscious exchange. They’re purists in that they believe in using the highest quality ingredients you can get, even if they’re also the most pricey. They also use production methods that contribute back to community. “Living with the highest ideals and principles is a great investment, when you really connect and contribute, your power becomes much greater and you can do anything”, says Warren. We asked them for their favourite wellness tip. Warren: Lately my favourite thing is waking up with the rising sun and meditating, it might not be for everyone, but I seriously recommend giving it a try. Gavin: Lemon water first thing in the morning feels amazing in your body; I also have an app called Headspace, with guided meditation tracks. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get into meditation. Find Wazoogles in-store or go to www.wazoogles.com

MILK MAGIC
First brewed in China in 2737 BC, green tea is the oldest herbal tea around. Today it’s enjoyed for its myriad health benefits, which include vitality, detoxification, mental focus and weight management, to name a few. Consuming enough green tea throughout the day to make the most of its health-enhancing qualities can be challenging, and green tea supplements have proven to be a more efficient and convenient way of absorbing the benefits. Now recognised as the benchmark in green tea supplementation, Origine 8 delivers all eight green tea catechins in a single daily capsule. Origine 8 Green Tea 30caps R299
Goat milk has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to nourish and regenerate an over-taxed immune system. It is high in nutrients, containing almost 35% of your recommended daily calcium in just one cup. It is also high in riboflavin, phosphorous, vitamin B12, protein and potassium. It’s little wonder Gandhi was known to restore himself to health after long fasting periods by drinking raw goat’s milk! POWER UP
ON PLANTS by Kelly Schreuder

A GOOD DIET SHOULD SUPPORT OPTIMUM WELLNESS AND ACHIEVE GOALS LIKE BALANCED WEIGHT, HEALTHIER GUT FUNCTION OR IMPROVED CHOLESTEROL PROFILES. DESPITE MANY VARIATIONS IN THE ISSUES I TREAT, ONE MESSAGE IS CLEAR: A HEALTHY, PREVENTIVE DIET FOR MOST CONDITIONS IS BASED ON A VARIETY OF REAL FOODS, INCLUDING PLENTY OF PLANT FOODS SUCH AS WHOLE GRAINS, LEGUMES, FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND VEGETABLE OILS LIKE OLIVE OIL.
DID YOU KNOW? A 2006 study compared two diets high in fruit and vegetables. It was found that consumption of a high botanical diversity of fruits and vegetables (18 varieties) was associated with a reduction in markers of both lipid peroxidation and DNA oxidation (damage). A diet with the equivalent quantity, but reduced diversity (only 5 varieties), was only associated with reduced lipid peroxidation, which suggests that the diversity of plant intake is perhaps even more important than the overall amount consumed.
14
helping you live life well
We can then add contributions from all other food groups to ensure variety and enough protein, essential fats and micronutrients like iron and calcium. Also important is minimising potentially dangerous and unhealthy foods and substances like alcohol, processed meat, excess salt and refined sugar. There is a constant barrage of new trends in diet and powerfully marketed ingredients promising to make you a better version of yourself. I have observed great confusion as a result. One of the principles of a healthy lifestyle is to make easy and sustainable choices in your routine that you understand and enjoy enough to keep doing forever. One basic choice is to increase the number of plant foods you consume each day. This is not a new idea. We know that abundant fruit and vegetable consumption is a cornerstone of almost every type of healthy diet and is linked to reduced risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. In case you need more motivation, here are a few of the many benefits of fruit and vegetables.
Essential micronutrients & fibre Fruit and vegetables contribute vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, magnesium and potassium, as well as both soluble and insoluble fibre.
“

“
Fibre in our diets is linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Some types of fibre are also considered important prebiotics - ingredients that enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria that live in our guts. A healthy gut microflora means
more than a healthy digestive system. A healthy gut is critical for overall health. The bacteria in our gut helps to mediate our immune responses. They also produce beneficial substances like short chain fatty acids, which are absorbed into our blood stream and used as fuel by the brain, liver and muscles. Including more fruit & vegetables is more satisfying In a review written for the World Health Organization in 2005, Dr Beth Carlton Tohill presented research around the role of fruit and vegetables in weight management. Tohill discussed the benefits of allowing unlimited fruit and vegetable consumption in the context of a weight management plan. The low energy density and a high water and fibre content of these foods can improve satiety. An additional benefit of a ‘free food’ strategy like that is that bigger meal sizes mean reduced feelings of deprivation on a weight-loss diet, where portions of other foods are often smaller. In practice, I usually advise sticking to 2-3 fruit servings per day with an unlimited amount

of the less starchy vegetables. Fruits and starchy vegetables (like potatoes, sweet potatoes and butternut) contribute energy in the form of carbohydrates and should be eaten in appropriate quantities relative to requirements and weight goals. Phytonutrients Oxidative stress is associated with lifestyle diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease. A diet high in a diverse selection of fruit and vegetables is linked to significant reductions in markers of cellular damage. Plants contain various anti-oxidant phytonutrients, which appear to protect our cells and DNA from damage. While scientists are still researching optimum ways to isolate these beneficial substances, the research so far still supports eating real foods, rather than supplementing antioxidants in large doses. The quantities of these substances in their naturally occurring forms seem to be consistently safe and beneficial, whereas large isolated doses of phytonutrients sometimes have detrimental effects. Raw versus More The way you store and prepare your fruit and vegetables can affect their nutritional value. For example, peeling, chopping and
16
helping you live life well
long storage times cause reductions in vitamin C levels. On the other hand, many nutrients are more easily absorbed when vegetables are lightly cooked. Prolonged cooking times and boiling in water are associated with loss of nutrients. Some nutrients are fat-soluble, which means that for optimum absorption, we should include some fat with a meal to enhance the bioavailability of nutrients like betacarotene, a precursor to vitamin A. Is the only option then to grow your own organic vegetables, to pick and use immediately, with strict preparation rules? My answer to that is based on the attitude that eating more vegetables is healthy, even if you do not handle them perfectly every time. The habit of including these foods regularly and in abundance is far more important than getting everything right. If buying packets of ready peeled and chopped vegetables makes it easier for you to eat them, go for it. It is far better to compromise marginally on the nutritional value of an otherwise healthy food, than to end up eating a junky take-away for dinner. Start where you are. What is one thing you can do each day to add more vegetables? Once the habit is in place, you can refine your choices.

Select fresh, seasonal, local produce. It is usually cheaper and more nutritious. Buy smaller amounts of fruit and vegetables regularly to reduce long storage times and waste. Rather than getting overwhelmed with what exactly to eat and the best way to cook it, aim instead to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables, prepared in different ways. Raw, pickled, steamed, sautéed, pureed and roasted vegetables make a delicious and varied diet, with many benefits. Think about eating all the colours of the rainbow, including black and white. Colours usually indicate different phytonutrients, for example orange usually suggests the presence of beta-carotene and purple indicates anthocyanins. Include green and orange fruits or vegetables every day. Find ways to add vegetables to your main dishes e.g. chopped or grated into mince, stews, lasagne, curries and stir-fries.
GOOD HEALTH BEGINS FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
“A healthy gut is essential for an overall healthy body and mind.” DID YOU KNOW THAT HEALTHY GUT BACTERIA: Promotes normal gastrointestinal function
THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION: Bad bacteria produces toxins that trigger the immune system in the gut
Helps us maintain our normal weight
The brain is altered to inflammation by the immune system via protein molecules in response, the brain releases stress hormones, & neurotransmitter levels are altered
Allows for better absorption of vitamins & minerals
This can lead to a variety of mental health problems:
Regulates metabolism
Provides protection from infection as it comprises more than 75% of our immune system
Anxiety disorder such as obsessive-compulsive disorder ; Depression ; Insomnia ; Behavioural disorder such as autism and ADD/ADHD

Space, material, ease of use, design and how easy it is to clean are important factors in choosing the right kitchen companion. Here’s a checklist of things you might want to think about. WASHING – Some machines are quite difficult to clean. Bear in mind that you will definitely want to clean your blender almost straight after each use. See how easy it is to clean before you buy one. STORAGE – Double check how much space it takes up. If your kitchen is open plan and it’s a countertop feature you may want to go for a sexier design than if you’re getting a handheld blender that can fit into a draw. POWER – the higher the wattage, the more powerful. If you are blending heavy duty items go for more watts. In any instance you’ll want a blender with at least 350 watts. CAPACITY – most blenders range in size from about 3 cups to 7 cups. Get one with a good capacity so your mixture doesn’t overflow onto the counter. Size is especially important if you are stock piling soups, making marathon smoothies or pesto for a large family reunion. SPEED – Having a huge variation in speed isn’t that important. Slow, medium and fast will do for everything you might need. DESIGN – If you’re putting all sorts of chunky ingredients or hard ingredients into your blender and it often wobbles around then go for one with a really solid base. Glass and stainless steel are prefereable to plastic. With glass you can see what’s going on while you are blending. Plastic is lighter but may not be quite as hardy.
DID YOU KNOW? Besides making food for yourself, you can blend together all your wasted food scraps, anything from banana peels to coffee grounds, left over salad, an egg box and more as a starter mixture for compost. Add a bit of water if needed, add this directly to your soil or your compost pile and you’ll no doubt start attracting earth worms and beneficial bacteria. Try and keep it all organic.

THE GRAIN FROM HIGH NUTRITION TO ALKALINE HEALER, WE FEATURE 4 TOP GRAINS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR DIET. USE THIS GUIDE FOR PREPARATION TIPS, ATTRIBUTES AND FEATURES.
DID YOU KNOW? If something is labelled ‘whole grain’ it should contain ground, cracked or flaked cereal grains with their endorsperm, germ and bran intact. The endosperm, germ and bran are the main anatomical components of a cereal grain. A groat is a hulled grain that has been broken into fragments. The groat still includes the main anatomical components of a cereal grain, though, even though it has been hulled.

recipes Grains have been a staple food for centuries in many cultures. They’re filling, nutritious and offer a satiating effect. While barley is mildly acidic the other three grains have an alkaline effect in the body, something a western diet often lacks. Some people find grains difficult to digest but soaking them before cooking makes them much easier on the system. The grains we have chosen are easily digested and what’s more, they’re gluten free. Quinoa, buckwheat and barley are often classified as seeds from nongrassy plants and sometimes referred to as pseudo-grains. To maximise the goodness, choose organic to avoid possible ingestion of chemicals and insecticides.

BARLEY
Barley is a wonderfully versatile cereal grain with a rich nutlike flavor and an appealing chewy, pasta-like consistency. It resembles wheat berries, although is slightly lighter in colour. Sprouted barley is naturally high in maltose, a sugar that serves as the basis for malt syrup sweetener. When fermented, barley is used as an ingredient in beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Buckwheat also has all 9 of the essential amino acids we need and is a complete protein. It has lots of the tissue building amino acid lysine and abundant calcium, iron, vitamin E, and B vitamins, magnesium, manganese, zinc and copper. With a gluten-free profile and health-promoting flavonoids, it’s lauded for lowering bad cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. In Russia it’s commonly eaten roasted where it’s known as ‘kasha’. Buckwheat breaks down slowly allowing the body to absorb the carbohydrates more slowly. This means it offers a steady supply of energy and lasting satiety. It’s a great food for those with early onset diabetes.

QUINOA (pronounced KEEN-wa)
Quinoa comes in a white or red variety and is actually a seed originally from South America where it was a staple of the Incas and Indians of the Andes mountains. It was called the ‘mother grain’ because of it’s nourishing properties. Because of its unusually high nutritive value, researchers now call it the ‘super grain’. Quinoa is higher in protein than other whole grains, and offers all 9 of the essential amino acids we need. It’s a perfect food for vegans and vegetarians who can also expect high levels of lysine, cystine, and methionine beneficial to tissue growth. It has substantial iron
content and calcium, phosphorus, vitamins A, E, and B vitamins. Quinoa only takes about 15 minutes to cook and has a lot of versatility being good for salads, warm meals and as you see below, for chocolate cake too.

Realise that raw food eating doesn’t just mean nibbling on a carrot. There are so many new, interesting and different foods you have access to that you may never have tasted before. Things like seeds, nuts, nut butters, spices, dehydrated food and herbs, soaked, fermented and sprouted food will form part of your meal plan and you might want to invest in a blender, processor, sprouter and dehydrator. If you are eating high density nutritious food like nut butters you will feel satisfied with far less food – about a quarter of what you would normally eat. When it comes to salads, if you are eating salads on their own without seeds and dressings you may need to eat more frequently than normal. Experiment with your food and find out what satisfies you the most. If you prefer cereal type food or you just love creamy chocolatey food or if soup is nicer for you than biting through chunky veg, find the raw food equivalent, because there will be one. In the changeover start by including a green soup or juice in your normal diet or replacing one meal a day with a raw meal. Be careful about which cooked food you mix with raw as sometimes the two may not complement your digestive processes. To make sure you get maximum satisfaction from your meals, include a variety of different foods and processes that yield a vast array of taste and texture sensations. As your body becomes cleaner you are able to taste more of the flavours in food when it is at its most natural. You will find that less flavouring is needed and your diet is simplified and unfussy. You may find you don’t have the need to be exactly 100% raw that 90% raw suits you just fine. Favour what your body calls for rather than locking yourself into strict rules.

KNOW DAIRY,
NO DAIRY? by Lara Potgieter
THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF TO AND FRO IN THE DAIRY DEBATE OVER THE YEARS, WITH VARIOUS INVESTED MEDIA AND EVEN GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS CLAIMING DAIRY IS GOOD FOR US, WHILE MANY INVOLVED IN THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF NUTRITION ADVISE AGAINST IT.

DID YOU KNOW? Dairy is categorized as any food product made from the milk of mammals. This includes milk of all types, cow, goat, buffalo, mare, reindeer, moose, yak and camel as well as derivatives and products made with milk like cream, butter, cheese, cottage cheese, feta, buttermilk, ghee, curds, kefir, condensed milk, custard, ice cream, yoghurt and all the variations.

helping you live life well
From the makers of:
There are parts of the globe where dairy is a staple and uncontested part of a healthy diet. The Maasai people of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, for example, have traditionally thrived on a diet of raw meat, raw milk and raw blood. However in the modern Western world of processed food and factory farming, not to mention additives like hormones, dairy is often seen as a less than ideal dietary staple. Dr. Mark Hyman, Medical Director at Cleveland Clinic’s Centre for Functional Medicine, controversially quips that dairy is only really good for you if you’re a calf. Most traditional cultures have some type of dairy as a staple in their diets, some of the Bedouins live for weeks on mainly camel milk, Skyr, a cultured dairy product similar to yoghurt has been part of Icelandic cuisine for more than a thousand years. Qatiq comes from Bulgaria and is a fermented milk drink. Paneer, a fresh white cheese is common in India as is Matzoon, fermented milk popular in Armenia.
Popular belief maintains that dairy is a good source of calcium, which helps keep our bones strong. It’s not the only source of calcium, which is good to know if you’ve decided to go dairy free. While calcium is necessary for ensuring bone health, the benefits of calcium intake no longer exist after we’ve consumed about 600 mg per day. Clinical research has in fact shown that milk consumption does not improve bone strength or decrease the risk of fractures. Interestingly enough, countries with the lowest rates of dairy and calcium intake (like Africa and Asia) also have the lowest rates of osteoporosis. Another belief is that drinking milk supplies a good daily intake of vitamin D. In truth, few foods naturally contain vitamin D, and no dairy products naturally contain the vitamin. The best natural source of vitamin D is of course sunlight, and five to fifteen minutes of exposure a day can be more than enough to meet the body’s daily requirements (depending on the climate and the individual’s skin tone).
Depending on your constitution and the source and quality of dairy products, also whether they are processed and have additives, diary has been found to be detrimental to some people. It’s been linked to certain cancers, particularly those of the reproductive system. The danger of dairy in relation to prostate and breast cancer is likely related to the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) found in cow’s milk. Lactose intolerance is a problem that affects about 75% of the world’s population. The symptoms of this include gastrointestinal distress, diarrhea and flatulence, which surface because these individuals don’t have the lactase enzyme necessary to digest the milk sugar lactose. Additionally, much commercial milk contains a range of contaminants, including hormones and pesticides. There are the hormones and growth factors that are naturally produced in a cow’s body, and then the synthetic hormones commonly used to increase the production

of milk. These can all affect hormonal function in the human body. Traces of the antibiotics used when treating cows for fairly frequent ailments like mastitis and inflammation have also been found in samples of milk and dairy products. Then of course there are the ethical concerns of the modern dairy industry. Like all mammals, cows must give birth in order to make milk. They carry their babies for nine months, then begin to lactate for the sole purpose of nourishing their young. Due to extensive genetic manipulation, today’s dairy cows produce up to 12 times more milk than they would naturally produce to feed a calf. Yet virtually all dairy calves are taken from their mothers within hours of their birth. To keep the cows lactating at maximum yields, they are artificially inseminated. The constant cycle of forced pregnancy and birth creates a huge surplus of calves sold off to the veal industry. Dairy cows’ overworked bodies begin producing less milk at 4 to 5 years of age, at which point they are slaughtered (whereas cows can naturally live up to 25 years). The good news is that there is a range of tasty and healthy alternatives to cow’s milk available! While soy milk is often front of mind, it isn’t always an ideal replacement because it’s high in phytoestrogens, the plant compounds that look like estrogen to the body and that could interrupt normal hormonal functioning. The majority of the soy available commercially today is also genetically modified – another no-go for the conscious consumer. Rice milk is another option that many avoid because of the high carbohydrate content and the fact that most options currently on the market tend to have additives like flavourings, thickeners and sweeteners. Many health enthusiasts find almond milk a good alternative. It’s lower in calories and carbs, high in healthy fats, and contains significant amounts of vitamin E, various B vitamins and digestive fibre. It also tastes rather nutty and delicious. Just make sure - when

buying almond milk - that you avoid the nasty additives that can be found in some options, and always go for the unsweetened version. You do get brands that list only spring water and almonds as the ingredients, and those are the ones you want to go for. For those with nut allergies, hemp milk is a great alternative. It’s beneficial for health in terms of its omega content, and it happens to taste great. As hemp is a highly sustainable crop, hemp milk is a healthier alternative for the planet too! Coconut milk’s creamy texture and sweet taste makes it a favourite alternative in many households too. It contains healthy fats in the form of medium-chain triglycerides and has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Again, it is best to opt for the unsweetened or ‘lite’ options, and make sure you avoid brands with questionable ingredients such as sodium metabisulfite (a preservative used in some cheaper options). For those who enjoy yoghurt, coconut yoghurt can be made from coconut milk and is a delicious and nutritious substitute.

Allow the yoghurt to culture for up to 24 hours (making sure you leave it for at least 8 hours). It will still be thin at this stage, so place it in the fridge for a further 6 or more hours. This will halt the fermentation process and allow it to thicken.

HEIGHTEN YOUR
VITALITY by Kheyrne Danu
TODAY’S FAST PACED LIFE HARDLY YIELDS ONE MOMENT TO STOP AND RECHARGE. BULLETPROOF COFFEE AND RAW CHOCOLATE AREN’T THE SOLUTION TO DWINDLING ENERGY LEVELS. OUR BODIES ARE TAKING STRAIN AND PREMATURE AGING IS THE RESULT. TO REPAIR AND REBUILD WE NEED TO ASK THE 5000 YEAR-OLD EXPERTS: ADAPTOGEN HERBS.
DID YOU KNOW? Russian physician and scientist Dr. Israel Brekhman and his mentor Prof. Lazarv coined the name ‘adaptogens’ nearly 50 years ago. They used it for a group of herbs long revered by people in China, Japan, Russia and Korea. They called them adaptogens after scientific discoveries proved how effective they are in helping the body adapt to strains and changes in daily living.

Originally used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, adaptogens hold a quality unlike any other. They provide the antidote to the stress story. Your body has a stress response system, hardwired to protect you from danger. For most of us, constant pressure keeps the body on danger alert most of the day. The constant drip of stress hormones eventually leads to inflammation, cellular damage and dysregulation of your systems. Enter adaptogens. These tonic herbs help your body adapt to stress. High cortisol (stress hormone) can be responsible for excess weight. It can impact your brain making you more forgetful and mentally fragmented, as well as impair your immune system. Adaptogens normalize the stress hormones. They take you out of the fight flight state and into the rest and digest state. Unlike other plants, adaptogens are not stimulating, but they are able to energize a tired body. They are also not tranquilizers, yet able to calm a wired body, and help you into deep sleep. On top of all that adaptogens also repair damaged tissue. Science has been studying these unusual plants for decades. Only 1 in 10,000 plants are classified as adaptogens.
Here are some examples of these fine fellows: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) This soothing adaptogen has been used in India for 4000 years. It has the ability to increase daily energy, blood sugar, memory and concentration. It’s a great herb for those that feel tired but wired and have difficulty falling asleep. Ashwagandha has a positive effect on the endocrine system, reducing cortisol, increasing fertility including libido, and balancing thyroid hormones T3 and T4. It also supports perimenopause and impedes premature aging. Many use it for reducing inflammation, especially in arthritis. Ashwagandha is a strong immune modulator. It even contains the ingredient withanolides, which has an effective anti-tumor quality.

Rhodiola Rosea Found in the arctic, this adaptogen was traditionally used by young Siberian couples to promote fertility; it is powerful enough to bring back lost menstruation and help resolve erectile dysfunction. This anti-anxiety herb helps regulate the brain chemicals serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, relieving depression and balancing cognitive disorders. Rhodiola helps with short intensive periods of stress; improving recovery time, strength and endurance during exercise. Its anti-inflammatory and immune balancing elements provide relief for chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. It also contains phenolic compounds, which have a strong antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic quality.
“
IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY ADAPTOGENS ARE CONSIDERED THE KINGS AND QUEENS OF HERBAL MEDICINE. EVERYONE WANTS RADICAL VITALITY AND ENHANCED PRODUCTIVITY.
“
Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) Also known as Holy Basil, Tulsi has been revered in India for over 5000 years. This vitalizing adaptogen does a significant job at relaxing the nervous system, relieving mild depression, uplifting mood and helping with restful sleep. By increasing efficiency in oxygen use, Tulsi improves energy, strength and endurance. It is great herb for balancing heart health and blood pressure. It reduces the negative physical effects of stress, even protecting the liver and other organs from chemical damage. Tulsi is also used to regulate the immune system, cortisol levels, as well as being a digestive aid. It relieves inflammation and protects tissue from radiation damage. Hundreds of antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and immune-enhancing compounds can be found in this herb.

We asked Kheryne for a snapshot of her journey towards developing Super Thrive. She explains… We all experience strange changes during puberty, but when problems keep escalating it gets a little scary. Between mood swings, insomnia, weight fluctuations, fatigue and a desperate need to overcompensate for my shortcomings, I managed to frazzle myself into a heap by the time I was 26. But I was one of the lucky ones. A friendly health shop owner looked at me and announced, “Your adrenals need support, take adaptogens.” After years immersed in the natural health world, I hadn’t yet heard about adaptogens or the effect on adrenals. Taking adaptogen herbs was like lifting a veil. I discovering my calm, energized self for the first time. Superfoods arrived in my life shortly after and the two seemed like the perfect marriage. One day I decided to make my life easier and mix my 14 adaptogen and superfood powders into one pot. Trusting the avid research I had done on each plant, alongside some expert advice I worked out the dosage and ‘SuperThrive for Women’ was born. Plus it tasted good! I loved the fresh, slightly earthy flavour. A month later my close friend saw the difference in me and insisted I make the mix for other people. The feedback was amazing. I soon got to work on the Men’s formula, then the ‘Digestion SuperThrive’ and later the Children’s. Everytime I hear how someone’s PMS or hot flushes have cleared, their IBS has resolved or they finally fell pregnant, I am still amazed that my little product is really making a difference.
Fo-Ti (He Shou Wu) Fo-Ti is frequently used in Chinese medicine prescriptions, and is known to help improve health, stamina and resistance to diseases. It effectively cleanses the kidney and liver, which in turn clean the blood. Fo-Ti has the ability to nourish the glandular, nervous, and skeletal systems. It is extremely rich in potent antioxidants and in anti-oxidantpotentiating molecules, strong enough to detoxify the free radical superoxide. Fo-Ti protects our cells from DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, ionizing radiation damage, and many forms of progressive cell degradation. Plus it is extremely rich in zinc, and the lecithin content of Fo-Ti helps lower cholesterol. Schisandra chinensis Schisandra is a bright red adaptogenic power packed berry. It invigorates the RNA-DNA molecules to reconstruct cells generating vitality in the body. Schisandra helps prevent mental fatigue and increases accuracy and quality of work. In studies it increased physical performance in athletes while lowering cortisol levels. Schisandra stabilizes the blood glucose and blood pressure. It affords a stress-protective effect against a broad spectrum of harmful factors including radiation, heavy metals and oxidative stress. Schisandra’s active properties gently support and protect the liver while aiding the detoxification of carcinogens. It has a positive effect on cardiovascular disorders and the immune system. A recent study found Schisandra to be a potent support for people with conditions like ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, poor attention and brain fog. Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated the efficiency of Schisandra on psychiatric disorders like neurosis, depression and schizophrenia.
Reishi mushroom This medicinal mushroom is known as the immune nourisher. Its antioxidant quality is strong enough to remove environmental toxins from the body. Yet it is so gentle it calms the nervous system and promotes restorative sleep. Its anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective properties have been found beneficial for patients with arthritis, neuralgia and Alzheimer’s. It is also known as a longevity elixir as it lowers stress impact and improves cardiac health. Reishi contains the immunestimulating polysaccharide, beta-glucan, which has anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-tumour properties. It improves blood sugar regulation, oxygenation of the blood, and liver regeneration. Reishi is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, including B12. It boasts potent free-radical and radiation protection. Adaptogens can be taken daily, with their potency improving over time. They have no known side effects and are not addictive. They should be avoided during pregnancy but are highly beneficial during breastfeeding. Other adaptogens include Panax Ginseng, Maca, Gynostemma, Cordyceps mushrooms, Chaga, Taheebo, Rhemannia and Shilajit.

Mushrooms are being more and more widely recognised for their untapped healing potential. Paul Stamets, world renowned mycologist believes that even bees may use healing powers from mushrooms to keep themselves from disease and colony collapse disorder. He noticed a steady stream of bees between the beehives and some mushrooms he was cultivating – they seemed to be ’sipping my mycelium’, he said. Nothing has been proven yet but it’s an interesting possibility to research.

BODY CHEMISTRY &
HEALTHY CHOICES by Kevin Lentin
ARE YOU ABLE TO WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND SAY, “I FEEL HEALTHY, I FEEL HAPPY AND I FEEL TERRIFIC”, OR IS IT MORE LIKE WAKING UP AND SAYING, “I FEEL GRUMPY, I FEEL TIRED AND I FEEL TERRIBLE”?
DID YOU KNOW? Okinawa, in Japan has some of the most centenarians in the world. A significant cultural tradition is known as hara hachi bu, which means eat until you’re only 80% full. Eating in moderation has notable health benefits.
38
helping you live life well
Waking up and actually spending a fair percentage of the day feeling tired, demotivated, worried and stressed is more common than one may think. Levels of depression and anxiety are on the increase. Digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, food allergies and intolerances have come to be accepted as ‘normal’ and, in fact, make up a large percentage of visits to the doctor. Headaches, back and neck pain also seem to be ‘the order of the day’ all of which contribute to higher levels of absenteeism, loss of productivity and a general feeling of ‘your get up and go’ has gotten up and gone! In addition, other conditions including obesity and endocrine disorders, such as thyroid, adrenal, estrogen and testosterone imbalances also contribute to a state of dis–ease prevalent today, and if left for long enough, can eventually manifest as disease. Even when help is sought, very often no cause or organic reason can be found to substantiate these conditions. They seem to then be lumped into the ‘it must be due to stress’ bucket. After numerous expensive tests often come back negative, medication is prescribed to suppress the symptoms, and no attempt is made to look for other potential causes. There is an increasing awareness amongst certain groups of health care professionals, those focused on disease prevention, Functional Medicine specialists and clinical nutritionists, that by merely supressing the symptoms, the underlying causes of the dis–ease and even the disease will be masked, perpetuating on-going cellular damage. It’s like just covering up the red light that appears on your dashboard indicating that something is wrong and hoping that the problem will go away. The first step in understanding why one may be feeling tired and de-motivated and generally ‘not up to par’ is to appreciate that the body is really, just ‘one big chemistry set’. There are thousands of biochemical actions and reactions happening every second requiring hundreds of thousands of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and neurotransmitters to co-ordinate all these processes.
All these bodily functions and systems can be compared to an orchestra playing a symphony. Every note, played by every instrument has to be in perfect harmony to produce the perfect effect. The more ‘dropped notes’ there are, the more disjointed and out of harmony the symphony will sound.
“
THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF BIOCHEMICAL ACTIONS AND REACTIONS IN THE BODY HAPPENING EVERY SECOND REQUIRING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF ENZYMES, VITAMINS, MINERALS, AMINO ACIDS, ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS AND NEUROTRANSMITTERS TO CO-ORDINATE ALL THESE PROCESSES.
“
The secret, therefore, is to ensure that all the systems are fully functional, and receive the correct stimulation and all the raw materials they require to carry out their functions. That means that the cellular defence mechanisms, natural to every cell, also have to be functioning optimally to protect and enhance the cells ability to function normally. Much of this process is co-ordinated genetically, where our genes are designed to build the necessary substances (proteins) responsible for directing the process of cells ‘talking’ to one another, both inter cellularly (between cells) and intra cellularly (within a cell). It used to be thought that this genetic coordination was a fixed process. Once the genes from mom and dad were passed on at the time the egg and sperm met (conception) nothing could change the way these genes would conduct the cellular orchestra.

health
Well, it is now known that while this may be the case in certain situations, there are many, many instances where the genes can actually be influenced, and in fact even changed, in response to thousands of different messenger substances, produced both internally and externally from outside the body. I like to describe these messenger substances as either ‘pro–life’ or ‘pro– death’ in so far as the effect they can have on cellular health. In other words, each and every cell can be subjected to either positive or negative information that affect communication pathways and ultimately the way the cell is able to function. This process can affect any, and even all, of the body systems with the resultant state of dis–ease and disease being dependant on how severe, and for how long, the body is subjected to the ‘pro–death’ messages. The relatively new science of epigenetics, the study of the effect that substances produced either inside the body or influenced by outside the body, or both, has on genetic communication is revealing just how sensitive our genes and, in fact every cell is, to inappropriate and toxic messages. There are literally hundreds of substances that promote ‘pro–death’ messaging. They come in many forms and can affect everyone differently. Some examples include: 1. Obesogens (1) In 2006, Blumberg and colleagues at UC Irvine coined the term obesogens. This describes levels of obesity, and other health problems from exposure to certain chemicals, typically found in plastics (Bisphenol A) together with a wide range of toxic compounds found in cleaning products, paint products etc. Research shows these substances seemed to affect the chemical messaging processes, including enzyme and hormone functioning, that led to uncontrolled weight gain, along with the diseases that typically accompany such weight gain – diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammation etc.1 Endocrine disruptors can affect the endocrine system of the body including structures in the brain, the thyroid and adrenal glands, the ovaries and gonads and even the fat cells, all of which are responsible
40

for producing the hormones critical to ensure optimal cellular and organ function. Endocrine disruptors are substances that significantly disrupt the body’s natural biochemical and communication processes. They include a wide range of chemicals found in synthetic products (carpets and other materials), household products (cleaning products, cosmetic products, food additives, colourants and preservatives), paints, pollutants, processed foods, fish, meat and chicken fed hormones and antibiotics. 2. Metals Such as lead, mercury, cadmium that are highly toxic to cellular systems and that result in the liver having to function excessively, often to the point of breakdown, in order to cope. 3. Phyto-estrogens Chemicals found in certain plants, soy for example, that can mimic estrogen and thereby block the body’s natural estrogen from being effectively used. The nett result is that there is too much circulating estrogen potentially promoting certain forms of breast cancer. So what can we do to avoid falling prey to these nasty obesogens and other disruptors that will take us down the slippery slope from dis–ease to disease? Well, it definitely isn’t all doom and gloom. Our bodies have amazing cellular defence systems that are extremely resilient and designed to respond quickly and efficiently to the right ‘pro–life’ messages, offering protection to our genes and the cellular communication processes.
i
MY 7 NON–NEGOTIABLE ‘PRO–LIFE’ SUGGESTIONS: 1. Get enough quality sleep 2. Exercise at least 3 times a week 3. Drink enough quality, clean water 4. Eat enough food, not too much but not too little 5. Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, sugar, dairy products, high saturated fat products, processed, refined and high calorie, but nutrient deficient foods. 6. Increase the intake of a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds, fibre, grass fed or organic meats, sustainable and mercury free fish 7. Use mindfulness and meditation to avoid stress In addition, to really fire on all cylinders, practice being grateful for all you have, avoid conflict, be gentle on yourself, practice compassion and radiate love, empathy and warmth. One’s health is often taken for granted, until it’s no longer there. Start making healthy choices, and, if you’re still not sure, consult a Functional Medicine specialist for advice and guidance.

ADDING
antioxidants WHILE THE WORLD IS STILL LOOKING FOR THE ELIXIR OF ETERNAL YOUTH, ANTIOXIDANTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO SLOW DOWN THE APPEARANCE OF AGEING
DID YOU KNOW? There are two types of wrinkles – static and dynamic. Dynamic wrinkles develop over time through repeated muscle movement, such as smiling. Static wrinkles are due to environmental factors, hereditary and lifestyle – such as smoking, which increases the appearance of wrinkles hugely.
42
helping you live life well
Nature always has a solution to the threats and dangers the world sometimes presents. One of these solutions is antioxidants. What exactly is an anti-oxidant? It’s a molecule that impedes the oxidation of other molecules. Why is oxidation bad? It’s a chemical reaction that creates free radicals and this leads to a chain reaction that damages cells. Damaged cells show up as wrinkles, dry skin, age spots and all the signs of ageing everyone is trying to avoid.
NAVIGATE THE LANGUAGE There are a number of creams and potions that claim to have the ability to slow or stop these signs, but navigating a world of scientific language is sometimes a bit confusing. Some natural ingredients can sound a bit tricky, too – like Hyaluronic Acid – not something you’d think would be good for you, but is. In fact, your body makes this compound naturally to help keep tissue lubricated and cushioned. It’s found in your skin, connective tissue and your joints. Over time, your body makes
less of it. While you may not be totally in control of the ageing processes in your body, using anti-oxidants will certainly help. Here’s a list of some that are fantastic for keeping skin younger for longer. 1. Vitamin E boosts collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines, age spots and wrinkles. Vitamin E can be found in numerous food groups, from vegetables and seeds to meat, but the skin gets great benefit from topical treatment and the best form is alpha-tocopherol vitamin E. 2. Lycopene is found in red fruit and vegetables and it promotes collagen growth as well as reduces DNA damage. Lypocene is easily absorbed by the skin, so it’s a great topical treatment. 3. Green Tea’s secret ingredient is a chemical called a catechin, which reduces inflammation and tackles free radicals. 4. Coffee Berry prevents collagen damage and has antiinflammatory properties. 5. Resveratrol, famously found in red wine, protects the skin against UVB damage and oxidative stress. C
M
6. Grape Seed is rich in proanthocyanidins and is known to be a strong scavenger of free radicals, and is even thought to be more effective than vitamins C and E. Y
CM
MY
7. Genistein, derived from soy beans, inhibits UV induced DNA damage. Take it orally or use topically. CY
CMY
K
8. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a powerful antioxidant that improves skin texture and tone, reduces fine line, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation and has anti-inflammatory properties. 9. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient that can only come from the healthy fruits and vegetables that contain it. It’s an antioxidant that boosts collagen formation. WHAT’S INSIDE? Before you go slathering your skin with every known topical antioxidant, it’s important to remember that working from the inside is always more effective. Of course, hydration is essential to your health and certainly for your skin – if you’re feeling dried out, chances are you’re not getting enough hydration. Load up on fresh organic fruit and veg to get the full effect of nature’s protective power. Eat food rich in vitamin A by stocking upon carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, butternut, mangoes, spinach, kale, Swiss chard and tomato juice. To get a good dose of vitamin E, include nuts, vegetable oils, olives, spinach and asparagus in your diet. As for vitamin C, you simply can’t have enough, get yours with guavas, black currants, red pepper, kiwi fruit, green peppers, strawberries, papaya, broccoli, kale, parsley, pineapple, Brussels sprouts, grapefruit, peas, cauliflower and mangoes.

SUN DANCE

IT’S VITAL TO GET YOUR VITAMIN D AND WHAT BETTER PLACE TO START THAN THE SUN – BUT IN THE PROCESS MAKE SURE YOU ARE PROTECTED FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS.

In South Africa, we are blessed with an abundance of sunshine. Even so, you could be lacking in vitamin D, essential for regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and supporting a healthy immune system. So, other than eating Vitamin-D rich foods, the easiest way to get your daily dose is to spend time in the sun. OUTSIDE PROTECTION Protection is important and there’s no point in going out into the sun to get your Vitamin D and covering up – the sun’s rays simply won’t reach you. Here we list some natural ways to keep your skin safe: 1. Sesame oil blocks about 30 percent of UV rays. 2. Sunflower seed oil is a great source of beta carotene, which helps make your skin less sensitive to the sun. 3. Broccoli seed oil protects the skin from free radical damage. 4. Vitamin E, applied topically helps lessen sun damage – but be sure to get only naturally occurring vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol and tocotrienol) – it’ll help stave off wrinkles, too. 5. Walnut extract – there’s a reason very tanned people are likened to walnuts, as this extract is an effective self-tanning sunscreen. There are compounds in walnut extract that react with the keratin proteins in your skin to form coloured compounds that protect you from UV. 6. Tea time – green tea has myriad benefits and the same antioxidants that protect your cells on the inside can also protect your skin. You can apply green tea directly to your skin as a sun protection.
INSIDE PROTECTION Get protection from the inside by consuming these foods: 1. Citrus is high in Vitamin C and longterm intake of vitamin C, especially when combined with vitamin E, can reduce your potential for sunburn. 2. Carrots are filled to the brim with beta carotene, which protects your skin against free radical damage caused by sun exposure. 3. Strawberries are full of vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which help protect your skin against sun damage, and can assist in the healing process. 4. Green tea – here it is again, it seems that green tea is your best accompaniment for a summer’s day, both on the inside and out. Green tea’s catechins have disease-preventing properties and protect against the inflammation caused by sunburn. 5. Almonds are a fantastic source of vitamin E, which repairs and protects the skin from sunlight and also contain quercetin, which protects against UV damage. 6. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, lettuce and Swiss chard are great sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, both powerful antioxidants that slow the cell growth prompted by UV light. 7. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is a carotenoid and antioxidant that reduces free radical damage from the sun. 8. Flax seed oil is a brilliant source of omega 3 fatty acids and can protect your skin from UV rays while also keeping it moisturised.

GO OUTSIDE There are so many benefits to being outside in the sun, in nature – so use natural methods from mother nature for your protection and then go outside and embrace the healthgiving rays from the sun. You could also begin practising sun-gazing, which is an ancient practise that’s advocated for better all-round health and even eye health. The practise is recommended to anyone, and is apparently safe to do in the hour after sunset or the hour before sunrise and build up to a period of around 1 ½ minutes. You should be barefoot and standing on plain earth while doing this.

WARRIORS EVERYTHING IN JIU-JITSU IS BASED ON DEFENCE, RATHER THAN ATTACK. IN TRADITIONAL FIGHTING SYSTEMS, THE ONLY WAY TO RESOLVE A CONFLICT IS BY PUNCHING AND KICKING HARDER THAN YOUR OPPONENT, LEAVING HIM BATTERED, BRUISED AND GENERALLY RATHER MISERABLE. IN JIUJITSU YOU TAKE YOUR OPPONENT’S AGGRESSION, TURN IT AROUND ON HIM AND GET HIM INTO A ‘SUBMISSION HOLD’, WHERE HE THEN HAS THE OPTION OF STOPPING THE FIGHT AND ‘TAPPING’ TO INDICATE SUBMISSION. THE SITUATION IS RESOLVED, NO HARM HAS BEEN INFLICTED, AND ALL INVOLVED UNDERSTAND WITH CLARITY THAT THE CONFLICT IS OVER. THIS IS IN ALIGNMENT WITH JIU-JITSU’S FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE, WHICH IS TO DO NO HARM.
did you know? Jiu-Jitsu - pronounced jew-jit-soo – is an ancient fighting art dating back about 2500 years. Jiu-Jitsu means ‘the art of winning by yielding’, and is premised on the understanding that conflict always arises out of uncertainty, and that if you know how to fight, you do not need to fight. This sense of being well equipped generates a self-confidence that expands into all other areas of life.

The other governing rules of Jiu-Jitsu form a good philosophy for life in general: •
Look and listen - to understand situations better, gain clarity and avoid uncertainty and therefore conflict.
•
Always do your best - so that you can find greater joy and satisfaction from whatever you choose to do, and constantly strive to be a better version of yourself.
•
Be honest - this leads to a life filled with balance, integrity and achievement.

ANXIETY & FATIGUE RUINING YOUR PERFORMANCE?
The discipline applied in the practice of Jiu-Jitsu is based on personal responsibility. Much emphasis is placed on helping students to overcome their fears - real or imagined – so that they can feel confident enough to develop their latent talents. The Combat Jiu-Jitsu Academy (CJA) in Cape Town was founded by Mike Herbig over 15 years ago, and is now one of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu schools for children and young people in South Africa.
“

“
Mike’s own journey started at the age of 16, when he joined a karate school. After training there for a decade he decided to look for a more modern, integrated fighting system. After spending the next 10 years training and studying in various martial arts disciplines, he founded the Academy in 2000 with a clearer understanding of what works, what doesn’t, and how to teach it in the best way possible. The focus of the academy is on children: growing them, developing them and creating a support system in which the leaders of tomorrow can maximise their potential. For older students wanting to continue the work, there is an instructors course that teaches selected students how to pass their knowledge and skills onto others. The Academy’s Instructor Corps now stands at almost 30 students, and ranges in age from 12 to over 30 years old. All these students have been in training with Mike since the age of five, and he views the programme as essentially an advanced leadership programme, desgined to give students an extra set of skills to make sure they live their lives optimising their happiness, achievement, fulfillment and peace.

did you know? Research geared towards motivating children to care about nature and the environment shows that early contact with nature, empathy for fellow creatures, and fostering a sense of wonder and fascination in nature is highly important.
GROWING
EARTH CHILDREN BRING YOUR CHILD IN TOUCH WITH THE EARTH; WITH NATURE, GARDENS AND WITH GROWING. SEND THEM OUT INTO THE GARDEN OR PARK WITH A HOST OF CHALLENGES, DISCOVERIES, ADVENTURES AND IDEAS AND SEE THEM OVERCOME WITH EXCITEMENT AND JOY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO BEGIN THEIR LOVE OF NATURE. MAKE SEED-PLANTING PAPER Create a paper mache mixture then add seeds. This you can form into cards or shapes and give them away or write wishes on them and plant them in the ground. First find some natural paper, try and get some without artificial dyes or inks. Tear it up into little pieces and put it in a bowl. Add water and mush it together with your hands. Once the paper is completely mushed up (you can even blend it) sprinkle some wild flower seeds or any plantable seeds into your mush. Use food dye if you want to change the colour. Roll it out into thin paper pieces or mould it into shapes of the sun, earth or moon and let it dry in the sun. Once dried, you can write messages on them and plant them or give them away.

PLOT A SCAVENGER HUNT Write a list of items to find in the garden. You may want to put a little drawing next to each item and a tick box. The items can be collected in a bucket or Tupperware or if they’re uncatchable or too big, they can be ticked off on a sheet of paper. Your list can include things like: pebble, spiderweb, tree, grass, bird, cloud, ant, flower, seeds, pod, bark, green leaf, brown leaf, soil and bug. PRESS FLOWERS All kinds of flowers can be pressed and dried although it’s better to use one’s that naturally have flat faces like pansies and violets rather than orchids or lilies. If you do want to press a more full flower you can always pull the pebbles off and reconstruct it when you present them in a design. Pick
the flowers when their colours are most vibrant and they don’t have too much dew. You can get a proper flower press from a craft shop but using heavy books is just as effective. Lay your flowers out carefully without overlapping them, then sandwich them between 2 pieces of blotting paper and 2 pieces of cardboard. Put them in a book and pile up more heavy books on top. Change the blotting paper for the next 2 days to remove the extra moisture and then after a few more days you will have beautiful pressed and dried flowers ready to be used in many types of design. PICK FOOD Picky eaters are usually cured when given an opportunity to connect with the source of their food. Get kids to grow tomatoes,
cucumbers, herbs, lettuce, carrots and other veg or take them to a farm to pick their own fruit and vegetables and you will find they are very willing to eat what they’ve picked. It’s something that’s often overlooked but kids usually have no idea that their fruit or vegetable salads have been grown. PLAY A GAME Make a game of ‘noughts & crosses’ using sticks for the framework and pebbles for the markers. You can draw noughts and crosses on your pebbles with a khoki pen or just use different colour pebbles. You can also play ‘checkers’ by drawing the grid in the sand and using smaller pebbles as the markers. Pebbles are also lovely to draw on. Find a few smooth one’s and get kids to draw little pictures on them. FOLLOW THE MOON Making kids aware of where the moon is and how it charts the sky is a good grounding and awareness exercise for them. Get them to go outside at a specific time each night to check the sky and see if the moon is visible, where it is in the sky and what shape it appears to be. Make a chart and get them to draw the moon each night or fill in with black if it doesn’t appear. RECYCLE SOMETHING Put your child in charge of recycling something in the house. It could be all the bottles, the organic matter or all the plastic items. If this is something they catch onto, you’ll find kids can be very diligent and take pride in their project. It will teach them about the importance of recycling and give them a sense of responsibility and pride.
Get all your garden essentials from
SAVE TIN CANS Empty and washed tin cans make great seed planters. Ask Dad to hammer a few holes in the bottom or alternatively add a few stones for drainage. Put some good soil in your can and plant the seeds you want to grow. You can even paint the tins and line them up – they’ll make a pretty garden feature. Once the seedlings have grown, you can replant them into the garden.
“
CHILDREN WITH DIRECT ACCESS TO NATURE ARE BETTER LEARNERS, HAVE INCREASED ATTENTION SPANS AND ARE LESS LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE STRESS.
“
BE A TREE Instill a sense of identification with the natural world by asking children to choose something in nature that can’t speak, and speak on its behalf. This could be a tree, a river, beetle or the wind, leaf or flower. Ask them to imagine what it would be like to be that thing; what it would like to say if it had a voice. Get them to speak on behalf of their chosen element, insect or plant and see the imaginative stories they concoct.
TEACH SILENCE Allow children to find peace in silence by teaching them to create a silent space. Tell them you are going to ‘make silence’, it’s a much easier way for them to identify than saying, keep quiet. Often when given the order to ‘keep quiet’ it becomes a negative thing for kids. Creating silence can become a beautiful positive experience when presented differently. Ask them to repeat the following steps: •
• • • • •
As I sit cross-legged on the floor, I put my hands on my knees I ask my body to be still, I tell my mouth to be quiet. I close my eyes. I tell my thoughts to float by I put my hands on my heart I take a deep breath in and breathe out slowly.

ADVENTURES IN
ANIMAL COMMUNICATION by Lara Potgieter
THERE TENDS TO BE AN UNSPOKEN COLLECTIVE HUMAN BELIEF THAT ANIMALS ARE FAIRLY TWO-DIMENSIONAL BEINGS – PHYSICAL FORMS WITH NOT MUCH GOING ON INSIDE. WE BREED THEM TO MEET OUR NEEDS, AND ASSUME THAT THEY DON’T LAUGH, REASON, GRIEVE, HOPE, DREAM OR FALL IN LOVE. The more intuitive among us are aware of (and often able to demonstrate) the fact that this could not be further from the truth. Animals may not express emotion in the same way as we do, but that’s not to say that they don’t have access to the full spectrum. You’ve seen the loyalty, spontaneity and forgiveness demonstrated by your dog – what’s to say she doesn’t also mourn the loss of her loved ones, or find something really funny? Animal communicators are able to skillfully quiet their minds, connect to their psychic senses and listen to animals with their hearts rather than their heads. They pick up the messages visually or phonetically, and

Renowned animal communicator Amelia Kinkade’s clients include stars like Pink and Ashton Kutcher, great minds the likes of Dr. Bernie Segel and Alan Cohen, and even British royalty like Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. Although kittens meow to let their mothers know their needs, adult cats don’t actually meow at each other – just at people. They do yowl at each other, but this is a different vocalisation. Perhaps they’ve cottoned onto the fact that meowing helps them get their way with humans! Animal communicators cite meditation as one of the best methods to assist in the growth of telepathic communication with both animals and humans.
helping you live life well
interpret and express them in ways that make sense to the humans around them. While communicating telepathically with animals and doing so with humans are said to be no different, the messages can - ironically enough - come through clearer from the non-humans. As celebrity animal communicator and activist Amelia Kinkade says, “Some humans put up smokescreens of self deception that take psychic energy to penetrate. Animals don’t lie. They may joke, but they never lie. When you ask a dog why he is upset, he will answer you instantly. If you ask a cat, she will answer you shamelessly and unapologetically. If you ask a human, she might not know.”
Amelia is able to find out from people’s pets what the emotional climate in their households is like, what their humans do for a living, what their psychological limitations are, who they recently married or divorced, where they are planning on going on holiday, and more. Animal communicators report that animals are able to describe not only their own medical conditions, but those of their humans too. In fact, the two are often inseparable, with animals picking up and taking on so much more of our ‘stuff’ than we care to realise. Although all humans are said to have often unexplored intuitive abilities, telepathy is said to be as much a learned skill as any
other, and is usually conditioned out of us from an early age. We may see it as a ‘gift’, but it requires a great deal of discipline and patience too. As Amelia explains, “We are talking about engaging in deep states of tender sacred silence. In order to arrive at this state of grace, you need to make a huge commitment to your spiritual awakening and the relinquishing of your ego.” Communicating with animals either living or passed is said to come almost naturally once this state of heightened awareness has been reached.
“
TO LEARN TELEPATHY EFFECTIVELY, WE NEED TO LEARN TO TRUST OURSELVES. OUR GUT FEELINGS ARE OUR MESSAGES, AND THE GREATEST CHALLENGE STANDING BETWEEN US AND THE PROCESS OF EFFECTIVE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION IS OFTEN OUR INABILITY TO SURRENDER TO THE PROCESS.
“
Cape Town animal communicator Debbie Caknis is on a mission to help those who want to deepen their relationship to their animal companions to tap into this ability within themselves. Although she skillfully helps clients in her private practice to understand the physical and emotional needs of (and thus properly care for) their animals, she believes in taking the time to guide them towards a place where they no longer need her to facilitate the communication. “Telepathy is communication between all of life, and we all do it, all the time. It’s a natural ability that sentient beings possess – there are just some principles and techniques involved in doing it effectively,” she explains. Debbie teaches these principles in her intimate and experiential two-day Introduction to Animal Communication and Healing workshops, where she covers everything from the ethics to the practicalities of inter-species communication. Participants are guided through the processes involved

You’d like to know whether an animal is right for you, your family or your home. You want to understand you animal’s physical and emotional needs. You need to track an animal’s whereabouts. You’re considering putting an animal down and would like to know whether it is in fact her time to go. You’d like to help an animal to understand his circumstances. You’d like to communicate with a crossed-over animal.
in sending and receiving clear images in a non-judgmental and experimental space. With deep compassion and a great sense of humour, Debbie helps her students reach the state of stillness in which true communication can arise, and helps them through the moments when communication is difficult or non-existent. Whether it’s explaining the meaning of q-forms, unimorphosis or resogenesis, or advising which crystals and tissue salts may be most effective in helping to alleviate an animal’s discomfort, Debbie leaves no stone unturned in the comprehensive and enlightening workshops. That being said, if a participant begins to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the new insights, she’ll be the first to point out that the most important ingredients to being a successful animal communicator are simply an open heart, a desire to help, and a willingness to learn a little and laugh a lot along the way.

The next Introduction to Animal Communication and Healing workshop will take place in Hout Bay on 3 and 4 December 2016. For more information, to reserve your space or to view the dates for next year’s courses, visit www. intuitionandhealing.co.za.

BOOK REVIEWS by Lara Potgieter
TREAT YOURSELF WITH A WELL SELECTED BOOK AND YOU MIGHT FIND YOUR EGO DISSOLVES, YOUR GREEN INTAKE IMPROVES AND YOUR WANDERLUST FOR TRAVEL IS IGNITED.
The Law of Balance l Loraine Magda Balboa Press This insightful, personal and practical book focuses on the fact that each of us has a masculine and a feminine side we can draw on at will. The key to thriving in all areas of our lives is taking conscious steps to integrate both sides to maintain a state of dynamic balance. It examines the nature of the inner feminine inward, receptive and integrating - and contrasts this with the inner masculine - outward, active and differentiating. Loraine points out that to rise above the new patriarchy and gender binaries that limit us and achieve authenticity and self-realisation, we need to step out of our hypermasculine or hyperfeminine states and learn to embrace true balance within. Drawing on her 40 years of knowledge and experience on the subject, the invaluable book gently and skillfully guides us along our own journeys toward balance. Available from selected bookstores and online.
“our instincts become stronger, our emotions freer and our perceptions wider.” Who wouldn’t want to experience that? Available from selected bookstores and online.
Canongate Books Ltd With equal parts of humour and vulnerability, Jamie Catto boldly puts forward the idea that we’re all wasting a lot of time and energy maintaining masks that serve to hide the ‘insanity’ that we’re all experiencing collectively anyway. His inspirational and entertaining book notes the ways we’ve all become approval addicts, while our real genius actually lies in the parts of ourselves we try to hide for fear of rejection. True self-love is explored as the willingness to unedit ourselves and accept the ‘wounded freaky creatures’ we are in each moment. If we are willing to go beyond our carefully curated personas, Jamie suggests,
Struik Nature The Okavango - which has its source in the highlands of Angola – is a magical oasis that never reaches the sea. This wonderful fullcolour introductory guide to the area covers everything from geology, typography and climate to tourism and conservation. The Delta and its surrounding wildlife reserves support one of the world’s last and greatest collections of large, free-ranging mammals, as well as over 500 bird species, fascinating reptiles, fish and insects and an impressive array of trees, shrubs and aquatic plants. Each of these is introduced in this companion, and accompanied by a great reference photograph. Available from selected bookstores and online.
Light is the New Black l Rebecca Campbell Hay House This beautiful book is a companion to finding grace in the face of the crumbling foundations of the ego. It speaks directly to readers’ divine natures, encouraging the relinquishment of the layers of fear and inauthenticity that dim the light within. Rebecca relates how she made her own ‘cracking open’ work for her, coming home to herself in a leap of faith that saw her answering her soul’s calling and becoming a lightworker – something she feels we can all do regardless of our individual careers or callings. Available from selected bookstores and online.
Insanely Gifted l Jamie Catto
Wildlife of the Okavango l Duncan Butchart
Good Better Green l Zita Steyn Quadrille Green veggies, in particular the dark leafy kind, are the most nutrient-dense foods available to us. This unique recipe book was born out of a question that many of us can relate to – how do I incorporate more greens into my diet? It covers all the different kinds of greens available to us, and includes everything from juices, smoothies, soups and sauces to hearty mains and surprisingly delicious desserts. Our personal favourites are the green hummus, green truffles and courgette chocolate brownies! Available from selected bookstores and online.

helping you live life well
We visited the farmstead to get a snapshot of what this might look like and came away with the special kind of longing that country life awakens and a notion that the growing trend towards living outside the city is nothing short of soulful. Jessica Saurwein is the marketing manager for Kleinood, the gorgeous little wine farm tucked away between the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the Blaauwklippen valley between Franschoek and Stellenbosch, and we were very lucky to have her show us around. As a qualified viticulturist, she’s passionate about everything that goes into winemaking. She laughs as I quiz her about her astonishingly curious surname for someone so connected to wine. “My grandfather about four generations back was a winemaker and made wine for the nobles in his day. Perhaps, as our name
suggests, the wine he made was sour”, she says in jest. “Whether or not that’s true, I’m determined to redeem the family name.” Jessica unveiled the world of analyzing soil and sunshine facing slopes, minerals, compost, vines, cultivars, rainfall and the inexhaustible factors that go into creating the perfect wine. In essence, what we taste through the wine is a deep offering from the earth in harmonious collaboration with the winemaker – it’s a sacred process indeed and no wonder that wine has so many biblical references. It’s also filled with history. Jessica relates a story about olden day merchants selling wine in barrels as the origin of the word sincere. Apparently producers would often put a layer of wax at the bottom of the barrel. Traders would ask if the barrels were ‘sin cere’ which means without wax. Kleinood is just as its name suggests, small
and precious and is cherished by the owners. Having worked extensively with many wine farmers in his capacity as engineer Gerard had a good idea of the mechanics of running a workable farm. Twelve hectares might be small in comparison to other farms but this little gem has produced numerous award winning wines and olive oils. Specializing in the production of a Syrah based red wine, a single vineyard Syrah and small production of Viognier and Syrah Rosé, their Tamboerskloof blends are a favourite at many tables. They also produce the de Boerin extra virgin olive oil, which is undisputably delicious.
i
Kleinood is open on Fridays for wine tastings together with two of the surrounding properties. It’s a wonderful property that’s well worth visiting. For more information log onto www. kleinood.com.

FINDING HEALING THERE’S AN AMAZING WEALTH OF PRACTITIONERS WORKING IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO ASSIST PEOPLE TOWARDS HEALING AND WHOLENESS. WE INTERVIEW 6 PRACTITIONERS EACH WITH DIFFERENT STORIES TO TELL ABOUT THEIR INSIGHTS ON HEALING AND HOW THEY CAME TO WORK IN THE NATURAL HEALTH ARENA. SHARON SINCLAIR Chandramala Life Alignment We have reached a stage in consciousness with amazing access to more mindful ways of helping people transform their current realities into those they desire. I believe we can all live our dream lives, and I am living proof of that! I live off the grid, immersed in nature, and do work I truly enjoy. It’s important to me to live the principles I teach. I see myself as a dreammaker, offering hope and guidance to people from all backgrounds who may have lost their connection to their dreams. The dominant tool I use is the Life Alignment process, which changed my own life so radically, I simply had to learn to share it. Life Alignment uses the Vortex technology, which consists of a Vortex mat and small magnetic ‘cards’ – each with its unique energy frequency and purpose – that assist the transformation of trauma and blocked energy to bring harmony and balance to the body and environment. I am also an intuitive reader and Doreen Virtue certified practitioner, and enjoy integrating colour into my work too. I work with individuals, businesses and homes. By tuning into spirit for answers and being freed of any past and future focus, individuals are able to access a powerful manifesting power. I’ve worked with entrepreneurs, NPO leaders, businesses on the brink of shutting down and more… and seen them rise to success after clearing blocks in their energy and cellular systems. Although I am based in Philadelphia, I also work at clients’ own premises or via Skype.
ANNI NEWHAM Alchemica Personal Transformation & Coaching
MAGDOLNA STRACHAN Absolutely Goddess Transition Partnering
I enjoy supporting clients in making their dreams a reality by guiding them to improve how they think about themselves, their dreams and the world they live in. My own experience of asking myself the big questions (“Who am I? What am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? What is my purpose?”) inspired me to find a coach to help me transform my thinking, and eventually to study coaching. I love the idea of a person waking up and realising she can be an entirely different being of her choosing just by changing how she thinks. This caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation is possible for everyone with the right support and willingness.
At age 40 I found myself at my 19-year-old nephew’s funeral, listening to his friends talk about how he lived life to the fullest. There and then, I made a promise to myself to find out what living life fully really meant. I initially thought this journey would lead me outwards, enthusiastically ticking things off my bucket list. Instead it saw me go inwards for no fewer than nine years, during which time I grappled with the question. Years later, with a coaching diploma under my belt and lots of soul searching behind me, I eventually got my answer! I discovered that my mission was to partner women during their life transitions.
I use the Results brain-based coaching method, built on neuroscience research and taught by the NeuroLeadership Institute. The philosophy underlying this approach is that positive change is possible through improved thinking. The coaching method can also be combined with personal transformation modalities handed down in the lineage of King Solomon. This combination of methods provides a beautifully balanced approach for analysing personal priorities, defining ideas, expanding insights, developing plans, evaluating actions, unpacking dilemmas and much more. Personal transformation sessions include techniques to increase life force energy, focus the mind, relax the body, cope with stress, improve motivation and connect with inherent divinity. I encourage potential clients to come for an initial nocharge, no-obligation consultation to get a sense of me and the coaching opportunities on offer. This is an opportunity to ask as many questions as you need and to decide if we want to work together in the intimate space of dream sharing and creation.
For me there is nothing more rewarding than being able to guide, mentor and inspire others! Over the past 30 years I have accumulated invaluable knowledge of the mind, body and soul, preparing me to be of service to my fellow Goddesses. While I learnt much from years of going within, I believe my journey would have been more enlightened if I was part of a community of women who supported and guided me during my life transitions. I am a supreme networker, and I believe that part of my strength lies in relating to women from all socio-economic walks of life. My long-term goal for Absolutely Goddess is to create close-knit communities where likeminded women can come together and support each other.

MARIE COVELEY Lighten Up & Move Emotion Code & Aerology I started my journey first as a group fitness instructor, then personal trainer and eventually a functional trainer. After this focus on the physical, I was ready to explore the subtler aspects of the human being and I became a qualified crystal healer and Reiki specialist. For a while the two parts of my practice were very separate. I would do the gym bunny thing in the morning, and then put on my hippie pants and do energy healing in the afternoon. That is, until I discovered The Emotion Code, and realised the full extent of how trapped emotions can cause pain or dysfunction in the body. Finally, my two passions were able to merge. I would, for example, get a client with a bad hip in the gym and I’d use Emotion Code magnets to release the emotion behind the pain. Suddenly someone who was previously a skeptic could see how energy work can directly influence physical performance. I found myself quite organically in the role of holistic personal trainer, helping sports people overcome the emotional blocks responsible for keeping them from achieving their physical goals. Developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson, The Emotion Code can address trapped emotions from as early as pre-conception. These are essentially low vibrational balls of energy that sit in the body, and can be detected through muscle testing or the use of a pendulum. When it comes to exercise, I have evolved from a focus on ‘exercise’ to a love of ‘movement’. The aerology classes I offer are based on aerial yoga, and bring an aspect of fun into yoga. They include a mixture of Pilates, stretching, core strength and more - whatever your body wants to experience.

HEATHER LINN Energy Healing & Soul Coaching
JEAN MAGNUS Metamorphosis South Africa
The focus of my work is energy healing, which addresses a broad range of issues from physical illness, trauma and anxiety to relationship issues, past life blocks or spiritual crises. In my private practice, I also offer soul coaching and journey work (soul journeys and journeys into the body), with a bit of hypnotherapy added to the mix. I also run courses and workshops on chakra balancing (enabling participants to work with their own energy systems to balance themselves) and mind/body/spirit balancing (a four-week course that looks at the different levels of being and offers tools to address each). Another workshop I offer is the intensive Heal Yourself workshop, which explores the ways we can activate our own inner healer and harness the power of our body wisdom. I believe in offering a range of different practical tools through both my workshops and private sessions, empowering my students and clients to work effectively with their own energy. Energy flow is vital, and dis-ease is often the result of energy blockages. If the energy is flowing properly through someone’s meridians, chakras and other major pathways, she can be empowered to process life entirely differently. It’s like receiving a system upgrade! In both my workshops and private practice, I give people lots of information on what’s going on in their energy fields - for example where and why they are stuck, and where they could be leaking energy. Once my clients/students are aware of their energy and how it is affected by both internal and external factors, they can start making adjustments to find their own balance and centre on a daily basis.
I came to Metamorphosis over 20 years ago when I was looking for something to help me heal from the debilitating depression and anxiety I was experiencing at the time. I had a few sessions with a practitioner visiting South Africa, and although I went in as a skeptic, I left a convert. My depression lifted immediately, and my anxiety left soon thereafter. Additionally, although I had been to remedial school as I could not read or write properly growing up, nine months after my first Metamorphosis session - just before my 40th birthday - I started to read and write. Astounded by the shifts, I contacted the practitioner for more information and she explained to me the reason the technique is so effective is because it addresses the root cause of symptoms rather than just their presentation. I knew pursuing this work was my calling! I went to Ireland to complete the Metamorphosis course, and when I came back I practised on friends and family, and was amazed by the results I started to witness (and continue to witness to this day, 20 years later). Created by Robert St. John, Metamorphosis involves the re-education of the subconscious mind to eliminate deeply seated influences. Once underlying tensions are removed, symptoms are naturally alleviated. It is a self-healing programme, with the practitioner merely acting as a facilitator. My current focus is on working with remedial schools for children with learning challenges, prisons for the purpose of rehabilitation, police stations that require assistance with trauma management for abused women and children, and drug rehabilitation centres and hospices across the country.
Every healing journey starts with the first step. You don’t have to know the exact route or even the destination. Just start with a sincere intention to make changes in your life and enjoy the journey – it will have its own momentum and take you where you need to be!

PLANT PROTEINS by Lara Potgieter
OFTEN WHEN WANTING TO TRY OUT A VEGETARIAN DIET, PROTEIN IS A CONCERN. HERE ARE A FEW POWERFUL PLANT PROTEINS YOU CAN RELY ON TO GET YOU STARTED, WHETHER VEGETARIAN OR NOT THEY COME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
QUINOA
This gluten-free grain has achieved such wide popularity that the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation declared 2013 ‘International Year of Quinoa’! It’s high in protein, and is one of the few plant foods that contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s delicious with roast veg, or blended into smoothies and desserts. We’ve even used it to make healthy cupcakes.
HEMP SEEDS
These high performing little seeds not only contain an amazing amount of quality protein but also add omega-3 fatty acids to the mix. They have a slightly nutty taste and can be added to almost any recipe to boost its protein content. Try sprinkling them over salads, stirring them into soups or adding them to your morning smoothie, muesli or porridge as a start.
LENTILS
Expect a nice balanced source of protein, carbohydrates and fibre from these versatile pulses. Cook them with your favourite spices and seasonings, use them to fill out salads or Buddha bowls, or make veggie patties or ‘meatballs’ out of them. The options are endless.
CHIA SEEDS
Chia seeds have been used for centuries for their amazing fibre, protein and healthy fat content. They’re little black seeds that are highly absorbent. When exposed to liquid they become gel-like and are great for thickening meals or creating tasty healthy desserts. We like adding them to our oats in the morning and soaking them in almond milk to make a delicious and super simple dessert. They can also make a delicious jam. Remember it’s best to soak them before eating as they become more easy to digest.
SPIRULINA
This super green is about 70% protein. While it’s a great nutritional addition to smoothies, it does taste a bit ‘seaweedy’ so is often easiest taken in supplement form. That being said, we have come across some very cleverly disguised spirulina in a few tasty raw dessert and energy bar recipes. If you like the idea of the powder form, try adding it to a date, cacao, vanilla, almond mixture rolled into a bliss ball.
