publisher's letter With winter here and most of us going into a kind of hibernation period, it may just be a good time to start looking inwards. This is our Inner Journey issue and I really encourage you to take the time to read each article mindfully. It’s become almost a norm now to spend your days in a near frenzy – doing life seems to take up a lot of time and energy. We don’t seem able (or willing) to spend time with ourselves, truly examining who we are, why we do the things we do and how our behaviour and feelings affect our physical, mental and social health.

contents 6 8 10 12

Our Eat Well section outlines mindful eating – reading it made me realise how often I simply grab a snack without really appreciating or acknowledging it. It certainly offers food for thought and I’m going to make an effort to be more aware of the enjoyment and nutritive value I get from my meals.

16

At the beginning of this year, I made a decision to try to live my life more consciously – giving thought to green practices. Because of that, I had a look at the way I was living my life – asking whether I was being environmentally friendly or not. But what I didn’t do is examine the emotional connectedness I had with some of my possessions. In Live Well, we ask you to really take time out to discover why you might be holding on to some of the stuff in your life and if its presence is good or bad for your mental wellbeing.

18 24

Whenever I look at my beautiful son, it amazes me how much life and expression his young face holds and although I’m enjoying every moment of his life, I’m also looking forward to seeing the man he’ll become – I hope that he’ll have more smile lines than frowns on his face, because, as we highlight in Look Well, those lines will tell a unique story. I hope that my efforts to father him, by giving him a good sense of self (see our Love Well section for tips) will be positively reflected in his face and life.

Our Move Well section is something everyone should try – dance is one of the fundamental activities that can be enjoyed across all age, race, cultural and gender barriers. It’s a common denominator throughout the world and I for one don’t need to read scientific studies to know without a doubt that giving your legs and body a little shake to the music is good for you. We also feature an incredible journey – Paul Myburgh spent seven years living with Bushmen and his book on his experiences is nothing short of incredible. His insights into life and self are quite literally life-changing and we’re delighted to have some of his books in stock at our Wellness store. We are hosting an event where Paul will chat about his work and his inner journey. Save the 27th June for this not-to-be-missed event.

YOU SAID IT… WE TRIED IT - SWEAT 1000 We sent our ‘fast becoming gym bunny’ and resident media planner Rouxmia Bougas off to try out Sweat 1000. As much as Rouxmia professes she needs motivation to gym, she must have worked hard because we noticed she couldn’t walk the next day. Rouxmia reports: Sweat 1000 is offered at the BUC Fitness Club in the heart of Sea Point and is probably the best workout result you will get in the shortest period of time. They combine interval training, functional training, core stability work, athletic training, and agility training to burn 1000 calories in an hour. I walked out of there feeling totally energised and on a high from the level of motivation and encouragement I got. Sweat 1000 suits everyone from couch potatoes to professional athletes. I personally need someone to push me as I am a lazy person and need all the motivation I can get. This was a perfect fix and I am definitely going back for more. I felt like my jeans were looser the day after - this is what I am talking about. It’s a top exercise form in Cape Town. Some of our local supermodels are regulars in these classes. “Addicted to Sweat 1000” their motto says it all. One class and you will be hooked! Follow them on twitter @SWEAT1000 contact them on info@ sweat1000.com and make sure to like their facebook page for all updates.

EDITOR’S CHOICE I love my new clothes dryer

For ages I have had grand aspirations of getting rid of my energy guzzling tumble dryer but wondering how to deal with wet clothes in winter. I was delighted to find the Spindel which is a nifty dryer that uses up to 99% less electricity than a tumble dryer. You can use it on all fabrics as it uses centrifugal force instead of heat. It also extracts residual detergent and mineral deposits from fabric, so laundry dries cleaner and minimises the chance of skin allergies. A stainless steel drum accelerates up to 2 800 revolutions per minute and removes up to 80% of moisture from laundry in 3 minutes. After that laundry air dries in a fraction of the time. Spindel Dryer R1499. Available at Kloof, Cavendish, Gardens & online only. Quick Ref Code: 0015236

WINTER ESSENTIALS

My

UrbanRetreat Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a beautiful space dedicated to your well being, a place you can go without taking time off work or paying for a weekend away?

“Everyone is a house with four rooms; emotional, physical, mental and spiritual. Many of us tend to live in one room most of the time but unless we go into every room every day, even briefly if just to keep it aired – we are not complete” Indian Proverb

omewhere you can fit treatments, sessions and workshops in around a busy life and family commitments; a place you won’t be expected to leave straight away so you can reflect on your session; a facility that cares about its clients, its reputation and offers support and aftercare; a trusted place to start your inner journey into well being and self development, discovering a happier and more vibrant life. A few years ago this is exactly what Charmaine Haig, Founder of My Urban Retreat was searching for. Before Cape Town she lived in London running a very demanding events company in a large West End Venue. Success came very quickly but with that she paid a high price spiritually. “Being young and a woman in a male dominated industry compelled me to work harder to prove myself. I neglected everything you need to live life well

many areas of my life especially my health, balance and time out from people’s needs and demands. To stay on top of my game, I became a person I didn’t recognize or like!" Charmaine was not looking for a Spa offering beauty treatments, a moment of relaxation or a quick body fix. She wanted somewhere she could get down to the nitty gritty, be guided and find some peace in the madness of daily life.

livewell green living

“I knew something was wrong, as I had lost my sense of humour. I also knew it couldn’t be fixed in a day but also wasn’t keen on being in therapy for years on end. There had to be another way.” Charmaine wanted to develop her personal and inner wellbeing and learn practical tools to cope with stress and fatigue. It seemed there was nowhere to find this in the city - all the retreats were out in the country. Holistic and coaching practices were available, but without a proper understanding of what each practice entailed or knowing about the facilitators; it all felt daunting. “I just wanted to escape at lunchtime or between hectic meetings somewhere comfortable and homely where I felt welcomed, could kick back and make myself endless cups of tea or read - even for thirty minutes without the phone ringing or the buzz of chit-chat. I didn’t want to have to explain my situation endlessly to different therapists, or waste resources finding the right one.” Eventually, Charmaine took a long holiday to re-charge, self-evaluate and just ‘be’. “During this time I discovered Reiki… my energy and self empowerment tanks were burnt out and I needed to find me again. Reiki was beneficial on so many levels it made sense for me to learn it: I could have it every day and it was more economical. I read extensively in many fields of self development, spirituality, philosophy and cognitive methods. I learned that taking time to stand still and be introspective is key to finding freedom and peace, which is key before moving forward. Meditation helped so much, after practicing for a while I could slip into a meditative state anytime during the day. Initially I loved to feel the grounded energy in group meditation. This break initiated a continuing journey of life purpose and self awareness. After letting go of people pleasing, power and ego trips, vast opportunities opened up for me.”

of their troubles and their discoveries. She has also tried and tested many therapies herself so she knows what she’s offering.

Maintain well being in your life

“In a nutshell my work is 'promoting selfhappiness’. During my life I have been fortunate to be presented with opportunities to work for myself, build successful projects from scratch and learn about people. I have gained valuable experience from failing in some areas and have loved the challenge of making wrongs right again. Through My Urban Retreat and various disciplines I wish to share my experiences and help guide others.”

Connection: Positively develop your relationships. Make sure you listen as much as you speak. Meditation: Ten minutes a day can help you have clarity and feel more positive about yourself. Be Active: Find an activity you enjoy and do this every day. Even if just walking your dog.

Reading: Makes way for insight into other concepts and ideas. This also helps you to imagine and visualize. Drink plain water: Even mild dehydration can make you tired and deplete your energy. Aim for 8 glasses a day. Develop your skills: Try something new or rediscover something you used to love as a creative outlet. Mindfulness: Be aware of the present moment, take note of what is going on around you and reflect. Giving & Receiving: Find balance: give to others but learn to receive too. Even an exchange of smiles can be very rewarding. Gratitude: Be thankful for all you have and express gratitude whenever you can no matter what situation you are in. Priorities: Do your most cumbersome tasks first and this will make the rest of your day much more manageable. Sleep well: Sleep early and get at least 8 hours. Write a list of anything on your mind so you can release it before retiring.

Years of study resulted in a qualification as a Reiki Master Practitioner (energy healer), and a proficiency in teaching visualization, manifestation and ‘chakra with affirmation’ workshops. By truly being aware of each morsel you eat, you allow your body to fully experience the nutrition and nurture you’re giving it.

food for

THOUGHT Food: you absolutely need to have it, but how much attention do you give this essential act of nurture?

did you know?

Hara hachi bu is a term used to describe the practise of only eating until you are 80% full. The Okinawans from Japan are the only people in the world who are known to practise this type of self-imposed calorie restriction (which is known to increase your lifespan). Eating only around 1,800 calories per day, they’ve also achieved extraordinary longevity, with approximately 50 in every 100,000 people over the age of 100.

here’s no denying that some food can cause you to salivate at the very thought of it, and there’s also no denying when you’re hungry your body lets you know about it. A rumbling stomach, feeling light headed and weak, are all signs your body needs to refuel. It’s not just hunger that causes the salivation effect, however, and sometimes its habit or emotion that triggers our desire to consume.

CONSUMING TIME How much time do you spend thinking about, planning and preparing meals? And how much time do you spend eating those meals? Thinking about those questions does give some pause for thought. We seem to be constantly considering what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whether its leftovers, a fancy restaurant or a simple 10-minute toasted creation, thought and everything you need to live life well

planning still happens. And then there’s the supermarket or farmers market aisle cruise where merely seeing your favourite food is enough to send your taste buds into a frenzy of want. According to the Us Department of Agriculture, people spend an average of 67 minutes eating and drinking only and 23.5 minutes eating while doing something else such as driving or watching TV daily. So, just how much time do you spend eating – and while you’re eating, what else are you doing? Many people today eat while they’re driving, working or watching TV. It’s this sort of mindless eating that may be a major contributor to unhealthy food choices and obesity. Studies have shown that people who eat while watching a movie or television tend to eat as much as 50% more than they would if they were actually concentrating on the amount of food consumed.

GET YOUR HEAD AROUND YOUR MOUTH Mindfulness is a philosophy used in many areas of psychology, from treating anxiety to phobias. It’s also been used to great effect in treating eating disorders. Mindfulness teaches, through better body awareness, how to be completely in tune with yourself and your body’s physical and emotional needs. When you practise mindful eating, you allow yourself to become aware of the nurturing aspect of eating by respecting your own inner wisdom; this means choosing food you enjoy and that’s nourishing for your body by using all your senses to explore, taste and savour; acknowledging your responses to food (dislikes, likes and neutral feelings) without judgement and; learning to be aware of physical hunger and satiety clues which will guide you to begin or stop eating. By truly being aware of eat morsel you eat, you allow your body to fully experience the nutrition and nurture you’re giving it, slowing you down and helping you to appreciate yourself and being grateful for the act of nourishment. Ask yourself questions about why you are choosing to eat what you’ve planned (or not) – why do you just have to have that chocolate bar surreptitiously grabbed at the till? The point of mindfulness is acknowledgement without judgement, so this type of question isn’t geared towards sending you off on a guilt trip about too many calories. It’s about understanding your deeper motives. Are you feeling emotionally distressed? Need a quick energy boost? What is the core need or emotion driving your desire for that bar? Understand it, acknowledge it and in doing so, you’ll gain greater insight into your mind and body at that moment in time. You’ll begin a journey of understanding your triggers.

BE PRESENT If you’re not concentrating on a meal (not necessarily the actual food, but the sensations you’re feeling), your brain might simply miss the cues that you’re eating and continue to send you hunger signals even after you’ve eaten your fill.

Take your

senses on a journey

Try these tips to reduce mindless overeating: USE YOUR SENSES See, smell and chew your food – experience flavours and textures.

CHECK YOURSELF Are you hungry or craving? Hunger is felt in the gut, craving felt in the mouth.

BE THERE Turn off the TV, stop working, sit down and slow down.

The next time you have a cup of coffee, try the following: •

Breathe in the aroma of the coffee – take three full breaths and hold the flavour in your nose and lungs.

As the water heats, be aware of the steam rising, the warmth generated. Take a moment to consider the energy created.

As you pour the coffee into your favourite mug, watch how the liquid swirls about, creating a frothy delight while the aroma rises even more strongly.

Close your eyes as you take your first sip and truly feel the sensation on your tongue, journey with it into your throat, your stomach and feel its pathway into your body.

Consider the effects it's having on your body – do you feel a jolt of energy? A sense of satisfaction at the taste and warmth?

With each sip, consider where the coffee came from; the people who harvested the beans; roasted them; packaged and transported them. Take time to view the journey from seed to stomach.

STOP IT It takes about 20 minutes for the body to tell the brain that you’re full, by slowing down the whole process and by eating intentionally, overeating will decrease.

CHEW MORE Chew each mouthful at least 100 times, this will also help digestion which essentially starts in the mouth.

Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Are you feeding your feelings?

Shakeela Mugjenkar, our resident Wellness Dietitian offers some tips on determining whether you are an emotional eater and if so, how to overcome the compulsion.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EMOTIONAL HUNGER AND PHYSICAL HUNGER: •

16

Emotional hunger comes on suddenly; physical hunger happens gradually. When you are eating to fill a void that isn't related to an empty stomach, you crave a specific food, like pizza or ice cream, and only that food will meet your need. When you eat because you are actually hungry, you're open to options. Even when you are full, if you're eating to satisfy an emotional need, you're more likely to keep eating. When you're eating because you're hungry, you're more likely to stop when you're full. Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Cookies or Casserole? Universally, ice cream is first on the comfort food list. For women it's chocolate and cookies; for men it's pizza, steak, and casserole. According to my knowledge as a Dietitian, people tend to go for sweeter food items like chocolate when they are feeling negative emotions. This is because chocolate releases endorphins, a hormone stimulated and secreted by the central nervous system when one is happy or in love.

4. When you feel overwhelmed, put off that desire by doing another enjoyable activity: take a walk, call a friend, play cards, clean your room, do laundry, or something productive to take your mind off. 5. Practice moderation, not elimination. Divide comfort food into smaller portions, decant your peanuts or chips into smaller containers to reduce temptation to eat more. 6. Be conscious of what you are eating.

10 WAYS TO OVERCOME EMOTIONAL EATING:

7. Organize your eating. Have good healthy food ready and available.

1. Recognize emotional eating and learn what triggers this behavior in you. Think about whether or not you are actually hungry or if it is as a result of some other trigger in your life.

8. Drink a minimum of eight glasses of water a day. This helps the body to distinguish between thirst and food cravings.

2. Make a list of things to do when you get the urge to eat and you're not hungry, carry it with you. 3. Begin to understand the causes of your emotional eating. One good way to do this is with a food journal: what I eat, when I eat, how I feel physically, how I feel emotionally. everything you need to live life well

9. Give yourself a moment to feel good about your accomplishment every time you make a healthy decision. 10. Get help dealing with difficult experiences or feelings, instead of numbing them with food. For any further information, feel free to contact Shakeela on Cell: 082 516 7745 or email shakimugz@gmail.com

hen your thoughts are fuzzy and your brain is tired, it’s difficult to make clear and life enhancing decisions. The World Health Organization says that one in 20 people worldwide are affected by depression, and anxiety is the most prevalent of all mood disorders. It’s been shown in numerous studies that regular exercise not only enhances brain power but also wards off depression and anxiety. Coupled with a healthy balanced diet and good stress-reducing practices (such as meditation), there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to keep your brain function optimal and your mood stable. However, stress is high worldwide and it’s not always that easy to ensure you’re getting all the right nutrients you need from what you eat. So, supplementation is sometimes necessary to ensure proper balance. everything you need to live life well

BRAIN CHEMICAL FUNCTIONS

Every second, messages are being transmitted throughout your brain to ensure your body and mind function properly. The four main neurotransmitters are listed below:

Serotonin

is calming and important to maintain a good mood. It promotes contentment and good sleep, and plays a part in memory regulation, learning, blood pressure, appetite and body temperature. It’s also found in the walls of the intestine and platelet cells that promote blood clotting. Low levels are linked to insomnia, depression, aggression, pain sensitivity and eating disorders.

Dopamine is important for assertiveness, sexual arousal, immune and autonomic nervous system function, and can be depleted by poor or lack of sleep,

stress, caffeine, alcohol and sugar. Low levels are linked to age-related cognitive decline and diminishing fine muscle coordination (such as in Parkinson’s disease), as well as attention deficit.

did you know? Scientists contend that declines in memory, intelligence, verbal fluency, and other tasks are not a normal part of aging and actually point to the onset of disease.

Norepinephrine

is needed for motivation, alertness and concentration, the formation of new memories, as well as transference of memories to long-term storage.

Acetylcholine carries thought and memory; it’s essential for memory storage and recall, as well as focus and concentration. It plays an important role in muscular coordination; low levels are associated with memory and cognitive decline.

MONEY, POLITICS & CORRUPTION misconceptions responsible for our ill health as soon as he became aware of them. Let me walk you through Prof Noake’s argument and then you decide on which side of the nutritional fence

you’d like to sit.

aiting for his talk to start, in his grey suit and Nike trainers, Prof Tim Noakes looks far trimmer than when I saw him last, five years ago at a talk on University

of Cape Town’s medical campus. His weight loss should come as no surprise though, considering he’s been following his own advice, avoiding carbohydrates, which he claims is the key to solving our global obesity epidemic. “I’ve been declared officially mad by my faculty,” begins Prof Noakes. Despite being shunned by his peers for his unconventional dietary advice, Prof Noakes appears happy and relaxed

WHY THE CONTROVERSY? It’s accepted as fact that we get fat because we eat too much and exercise too little: the twin sins of gluttony and sloth. The prevailing belief is that a high fat intake promotes weight gain and heart

and impossible not to like with a big friendly smile stretched across his face. Maybe it’s insanity that’s got him so at ease in the face of scorn. Or perhaps he’s just calmly confident that he’s right. As he explains later in the talk, he has acted ethically by correcting the

Prof Noakes declares that fat doesn’t raise cholesterol and cause heart disease nor promote weight gain and we certainly aren’t getting fat because we’re eating too much and exercising too little. He doesn’t expect us to blindly believe him though, presenting us with statistics and cutting-edge scientific intervention and review studies that back up what he has to say. This unconventional opinion, especially from such a well-published and respected scientist, has thrown the South African scientific and medical community into a furor. But according to Prof Noakes, the most outraged are those scientists who are receiving funding from the food industry.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it,” quotes Prof Noakes when a member of the audience asks how we can possibly believe him when so many scientists disagree. The food industry’s lifeblood is tasty and addictive food and beverages, packed full of carbohydrates and sugar. According to Prof Noakes, if South Africa’s university departments who rely on industry funding – such as cardiology, pharmacology or nutrition – were to speak out against carbohydrates and sugar (or the efficacy of

disease. Authorities say that saturated fat (mainly from animal-derived food sources) raises cholesterol, which in turn clogs our arteries leading to heart disease. This knowledge stems from the Seven Country Study, published in 1963 and conducted by a scientist called Ancel Keys who found that men in countries with diets high in saturated fat suffered from more heart

disease. What Keys failed to mention was that countries that didn’t support this finding were left out of his study. He also failed to report that heart disease incidence happened to increase with a higher sugar intake. Flying in the face of what we accept as the fundamental

DIET AND EXERCISE FOR HORMONE HEALTH You will have heard by now that sticking to a healthy diet and exercising regularly are vitally important for keeping you in top shape and staving off lifestyle diseases such as type II diabetes and heart disease. Researchers have now revealed that some of these health benefits may be related to improved levels of hormones involved in maintaining a healthy weight and metabolism. The hormones adiponectin

THE INEVITABLE DECLINE When you think of aging you may think of wrinkles and gray hair, but besides your appearance, your hormone levels also change as you age. The natural aging process results in the reduction of certain hormone levels and the increase of others, while some remain unaffected. The bodily changes that come with aging may also result in some tissues becoming less sensitive to hormonal signals and a

HRT LINKED TO SERIOUS GALLBLADDER DISEASE Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, may be prescribed to menopausal women to reduce the side effects associated with age-related reductions in reproductive hormones. But this treatment isn’t without its own side effects, including the widely reported increased risk of heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. Now, French researchers have found that HRT also increases the risk of serious

In a study of 439 overweight or obese postmenopausal women, 12 months of healthy, calorie-reduced eating, with or without the addition of a regular exercise routine, substantially increased adiponectin levels and decreased leptin levels, thereby bringing

growth hormone and reproductive hormones. Reduced growth hormone levels are associated with changes in muscle mass, cholesterol levels and bone strength; reduced levels of reproductive hormones are associated with the symptoms of menopause in women, and reduced sexual function and bone thinning in women and men. One hormone that increases with age is parathyroid hormone, which is involved in the regulation of calcium and phosphate

conducted on more than 70,000 postmenopausal women from 1992 to 2008. Of these women, about two-thirds reported having used HRT at some time in their lives and almost 3,000 reported having undergone gallbladder removal. The researchers found that women who had their gallbladders removed during the course of the study were significantly more likely to have received HRT. Exercise alone was associated with minimal improvements in hormone levels. This study highlights yet again that there’s just no way of getting around sensible eating and regular exercise when it comes to your health – not only will you look and feel better and reduce your

your body’s response to hormones, your cells tend to become less sensitive to insulin as you age, although insulin production usually remains constant. Prof Noakes says that a researcher who acts as industry’s mouthpiece stands to gain a lot of money and exposure: “These companies will support any researcher that will stand up here and punt exercise to lose weight [in order to avoid recommendations that’ll reduce their sales].” He goes on to say that industry-funded study results are biased, misleading and often downright wrong. “Ninety-five percent of nutrition advice is based on association studies,” Prof Noakes explains, “and 85% of association studies are wrong.” Association studies show how factors change in relation to each other but are unable to show that one factor causes the other. For example, in Ancel Keys’ Seven Country Study heart disease increased in countries that had higher saturated fat consumption. This doesn’t mean that saturated fat caused the increased heart disease. Other factors could be to blame. As it turns out, sugar consumption happened to increase along with saturated fat in these countries and could possibly explain the increased heart disease risk. According to Prof Noakes, the two biggest funders of US nutrition research, the National Institute of Health and the US government, will only fund studies that show that high

DEEP RELAXATION

Putting your body into its deepest state of relaxation once a day, even if it is just for a few minutes can have a powerfully beneficial effect on your health. Besides being an incredible anti-dote to stress, it also has far reaching healing results strengthening immunity and rejuvenating cellular activity.

W

hen neuroscientist Richard Davidson wired up Ricard Mattieu’s skull to 256 sensors at the University of Wisconsin, his brain produced a level of gamma waves (those linked to consciousness, attention, learning and memory) 'never reported before in neuroscience literature'. He was meditating on compassion at the time when scans showed excessive activity in his brain's left prefrontal cortex compared to its right counterpart. This, scientists say give him an abnormally large capacity for happiness and a reduced inclination towards negativity. According to researchers, Matthieu Ricard is the world’s happiest man.

Ricard left Parisian intellectual life as a biochemist and moved to India to study Buddhism where he learnt the value of meditation. Achieving happiness, he believes, requires the same kind of effort and mind training that any other serious pursuit involves. New research shows the simple act of becoming relaxed can have surprising health benefits. More than the obvious, relieving stress and mental tension, new findings show that deep relaxation, if practiced regularly, can strengthen the immune system and produce countless medically valuable physiological changes. Daniel Goleman writing for the New York Times reports that relaxation training

for asthmatics has been found to widen restricted respiratory passages. In some diabetics, relaxation can reduce the need for insulin. In many patients with chronic, unbearable pain, relaxation training has brought about significant relief. What’s more, research shows relaxation may lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and prevent disease by making participants less susceptible to viruses. So do whatever it takes and gift yourself with activities and practices that bring about relaxation. Massage, meditation, breathwork or simply being in a quiet space for a few minutes a day will bring you untold wellbeing and health benefits.

Where are we headed - a numbed down, dumbed down, zombie population?

PILLS FOR EVERY

ILL did you know? In 1970, in the USA, two billion tablets and capsules were prescribed and dispensed. Only one generation later in the year 2007, statistics showed a staggering 113 billion tablets and capsules dispensed. Doryce Sher is a registered Pharmacist, Aromatherapist and Reflexologist who is passionate about making people aware that they have choices. After ten years in retail pharmacy, Doryce followed through on her deep belief that medicines originally came from plants, and while there have been incredible medical advances, nature still has rich resources of active ingredients. She founded Aromatic Apothecary in 1992 making quality, therapeutic products using natures’ essential oils.

28

Popping a ‘pill for every ill’ has become standard practice in Western culture.

S

leeping tablets and antidepressants are bed time rituals for more people than statistics like to reveal. Recently a pill in the USA was launched for grief – does this mean we can’t grieve? Didn’t nature intend a mourning period and aren’t we supposed to grieve if we lose someone? “Where are we headed - a numbed down, dumbed down, zombie population?” asks pharmacist Doryce Sher. Doryce takes us on her experience in the journey of dispensing pills through the eighties up to now, and points out the dangers of indiscriminate pill popping. I qualified as a pharmacist in 1980 during the peak of the pill revolution. When I studied during the 1970’s the course still included compounding and plant based medicines, weighing grams and parts of grams, blending the powders into creams, or powders to swallow, each dose wrapped in folded papers. Within a short space of time when I began working in retail pharmacy, I became a pill counter, and a master reader of doctor’s handwriting. As everything you need to live life well

the ease of the ready-made pill caught on with the medical profession, the numbers of scripts dispensed in a day rocketed. I last compounded a cream in the late 1980’s and that was a rare prescription. I dispensed ‘shopping lists’ of drugs. On one script it wasn’t uncommon to see a hundred sleeping tabs, a hundred pain pills, sixty Schedule 5 potent vitamin pills and, indigestion tabs. The 1980’s saw the sharp rise of a ‘pill for every ill’ concept. After the 2nd World War, pharmaceutical companies recognised the value of mass producing medication, in particular, aspirins, paracetamols, indigestion tablets and antibiotics. It made sense – clinically and hygienically producing medicines meant mass production and ease of availability. Sleeping tablets became popular and pain pills were regarded as miraculous. Unfortunately original good intentions have shifted and we now have evidence of pharmaceutical companies re-launching formulations in a modified form. As original patents expire, companies actively seek ideas for new pills to market.

CONSIDER THIS:

If we look at the vast Indian and Chinese populations both of them up until the middle of the last century were nations of healthy people. When western diets and medicine arrived so did heart disease, inflammatory diseases and obesity. The USA is arguably the most unwell nation in terms of heart disease, obesity, insomnia, depression and anxiety, not to mention they are a nation in pain. They make up 5% of the world’s population yet consume 60% of western medicine available on the planet.

Until recently we accepted without question a ‘pill for every ill’. We were led to believe if the medicine or drug is prescribed by a doctor, it is safe, we trusted that because a medicine is registered, it is safe to use. We also believed that drug addicts are people using cannabis, heroin and cocaine. However lurking in the ‘pill for every ill’ mindset, a culture of dependence on sleeping tablets and pain pills has grown with the result that they are the most abused tablets in the western world including South Africa. Pain killers containing codeine are still sold over the counter as are other dangerously addictive (and bad for you) pain pills. Certain of these are banned in Europe, USA and Australia but are sold and marketed to our less aware and vulnerable population. Because we live in fast paced, stressed, quick fix times the ‘pill for every ill’ seems to be a wonderful short term solution, but long term they are causing havoc. People taking sleeping pills are finding they don’t work as well as when they started, so they increase the dosage. The same happens with pain pills. This is a sign of physical dependence - the body adapts and requires more of the same drug for the desired effect. More worrying is the psychological dependence. I hear people say, “I take two pain pills every four hours - I HAVE to take them otherwise I get a headache” or “I can’t sleep without my sleeping tablets,” and “I went back to my doctor and he gave me a six month repeat with stronger tablets.” Doctors are pressured to prescribe. Besides dependence there are

other dangers in taking too many pain pills: they have damaging effects on the liver and kidneys; and they can mask pain that may indicate something wrong in the body which is then overlooked. Generally, people have forgotten to question and think about the pills they flippantly take. Some self medicate without regard to the dangers. Fortunately, we have the Trailblazers who break free from the masses, question the status quo and start anew. They are usually followed by the rich and famous and then eventually, the masses. These trendsetters are questioning modern day medicines and the need for antibiotics for their children. They are exploring meditation, prayer, yoga and natural methods of sleeping better. They are going for massages and reflexology and using vitamins and health supplements. They use aromatherapy, homeopathy and common sense. They eat healthy and build up good immunity. They exercise and they rest and watch comedy. Before you unthinkingly take a pill try some of these wellness approaches. We are what we eat; what we drink; what we think; and what we believe, and our state of health reflects these four factors.

PAIN RELIEF IN A BOTTLE NEVER BEFORE HAS PAIN RELIEF BEEN THIS EASY

BE PILL SMART Visit a doctor to discuss the pills you may be taking and make sure you really need them all. Be aware of the side effects and dangers. Do not share pills with friends and family. Do not carry on taking pills after the prescription has finished. If it is an antibiotic, finish the course and don’t save them for another time. Remove all expired meds, tablets and capsules that nobody uses. Take unwanted meds to your pharmacy to dispose of. Explore the use of healthy alternative methods for illness conditions.

ILLNESS AS

INFORMANT Someone once said:

“Illness is a conversation between you and God.” Very often pain, illness or discomfort is a way for us to be informed of an imbalance in life, of something we need to change or adapt. Getting rid of the symptom without acknowledging the lesson can lead deeper into imbalance. DISCLAIMER: Not all medicines are bad for you; do not stop taking what has been specifically prescribed for you. Please note this article constitutes my perspective. Doryce Sher

IN YOUR ELEMENT See if you can identify qualities of the elements in your personality.

I

f you are spacey, speak slowly and don’t react quickly you might have more of the air element. Someone who appears to boil over, is excitable and quick witted might be more of a fire person. A smooth, go with the flow type might be more of a water personality. Many different healing systems use the elements to assess and guide individuals towards health. Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Polarity are some of the modalities that use them (see more about Polarity on page 61). The 5 elements of ether, fire, water air and earth can be used to identify imbalances in individuals. Someone who has their fire element out of balance might have arthritic joints, boils, feelings of intense anger or even suppression of it, bad circulation or weak digestion. If the fire element in

your life is over stimulated you might be recommended to eat more cleansing, watery, and cooling foods to calm the fire down (like salads and fruit and less curries, spicy or processed foods). What we eat can balance or stimulate our bodies and minds. Of course other lifestyle factors that can also over stimulate any of the elements and these also need to be looked at. You start getting a picture of how to balance your element by noticing the quality of food you eat. Lighter foods, like those that grow on trees (fruit etc) are airy foods. Grains that grow in the grasses like wheat and millet are not watery and require heat and water to expand and digest in the body. Lettuce, tomatoes, spinach and most vegetables are filled with water, requiring fire from sunlight and oxygen from the air, they and grow above the ground, absorbing water from the earthy roots. If

you have too much water element these are the foods that will balance you. Lastly we find the root vegetables like carrots, beetroot and potatoes which make us feel ‘slowly’ energized, are filling, nurturing and grounding and are good to eat to balance the air element. It makes sense when you think of the energies that are higher up are lighter. As they go down towards the earth’s gravity they become denser (from gas/air to liquids/water then to solids/ice). Sometimes we feed our imbalances by choosing the very foods that support them. Often we do this without realising. Taking a deeper look at the quality of food will help generate awareness and enable you to change long term patterns.

Ayurveda for you IMMUNITY EXPLAINED through the wisdom of Ayurveda GETTING IT RIGHT Follow an ayurvedic regimen at home to cleanse the body of ama. For instance, eat warm, light, nourishing home-cooked foods such as soups, or light meals of basmati rice and mungh dal and mildly spiced vegetables with grains such as quinoa, couscous and millet. Cooking your food with easy to digest oils like ghee and olive oil and adding immune-enhancing spices such as cumin, fennel, coriander, turmeric, ginger and black pepper is also an important way to enhance agni and reduce ama. Stay away from leftovers, processed foods, ice-cold foods and drinks, and deep fried foods. Drink plenty of warm fluids, and take daily walks or do exercise suitable for your body type. In winter, when the days are shorter and the nights are longer, it's natural for the body to crave more rest. Try going to bed a little earlier, and you will wake up with more vitality and freshness.

I

mmunity is simply explained as the strength of the body to prevent the development of disease or resist a developed disease. In Ayurveda, it is known as ‘Vyadhikshamatva’, the capacity to resist disease. ‘Bala’, which literally means strength, goes far beyond the present day concept of physical immunity. Bala also includes endurance against disturbance to psychological and spiritual immunity.

TWO CONCEPTS – AGNI & AMA Immunity is influenced by the power of ‘Agni’ (digestive fire) and our ability to digest, assimilate and absorb nutrients in our bodies. ‘Ama ’ (stored toxins from undigested food) is the root of all disease, preventing nutrients from reaching the tissues and weakening immune function. Ama is a result of improper eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle practices. Other factors that impact our digestive process and immune function are heredity, our relationships, stress and trauma, the season of the year and age.

Winter is the season when nature is ready to nurture us. The digestive level is high, we feel hungrier, and digest food better in winter, so nourishing our bodies more. We just think this season is bad for immunity because as our appetite increases, we start eating more junk, heavy and hard to digest foods, this weakens immunity causing us to fall ill. For this reason, it's more important that we eat immunity-boosting foods in winter, and follow an ayurvedic daily routine. Our winter regimen should be to nourish the mind and body by getting more rest and eating well. It is the time to build up and nourish anything - the hair, the nails, and the skin. It's also the best season for taking ‘Rasayanas’ (rejuvenators) and herbal products, because the high level of digestion helps us to assimilate them better. Ayurvedic herbs of choice this winter are Amalaki (rich in Vitamin C) and Yashtimadhu (licorice root) both for their immune-modulating properties.

Daily ayurvedic self-massage, called ‘Abhyanga’ is one of the most pleasurable ways to enhance immunity. Self-massage using warm sesame oil before a warm bath stimulates all the organs of the body, flushes out impurities, and builds resistance to stress and disease. It’s also a wonderful way to take care of dry winter skin! Understanding the immune system and how it is influenced can help us be more responsible for our health. Many of the practices to support good health and immunity are intertwined. Deep breathing exercise and meditation to reduce stress levels can help you sleep more soundly and choose more nutritious foods. Sleeping soundly will provide more energy to exercise. Ayurveda's holistic approach can help you develop a lifestyle that is good for your body and your mind while supporting health and immunity. Here's wishing you a winter full of energy and immune strength!

Moving your body and spending time in nature are two multibeneficial ways to help rid your body of the effects of stress.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOURSELF

Daily maintenance processing emotional and bodily stress is highly necessary. This is especially so if you lead a high stress life. Dr Yesheen Singh from Health Nation explains the importance of knowing the body mind connection and engaging in practices to let off some steam. espite individual unique we allow little time for release and Try these for starters:

D

psychological and emotional reactions to a stressor, our biochemical responses are identical. Stress hormones like adrenalin, noradrenalin and cortisol are released by the adrenal glands that sit on top of our kidneys. These hormones set off a cascade of reactions within our body. In the short term they allow us to better cope with or overcome the challenges of life, be it a marauding lion or an inconsiderate road user. Ideally we pass through the ‘life or death’ situation, find closure, and release the built-up tension to return to calm, similar to tremoring springbuck after escaping the hungry lioness. But if we continuously hop from one stressful situation into another, irrespective of their gravity,

did you know? The relationship between mind and body in the western biomedical healing tradition was first acknowledged and described during World War 1 by Walter Cannon, followed by others who went on to define this relationship further.

recovery, and never return to healthy balance.

Science is now better able to explain how accumulated mental and emotional stress, also called allostatic load, causes damage to our cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hormonal and immune systems, among others. The stress hormones affect our sleep-wake cycle, change our energy production pathways, overwork our detox organs and fuel the fires of inflammation that rapidly or slowly burn away at our physiological reserve. When this stress is continuous it usually happens that, one day ‘out of the blue’, we experience a fall from vitality. But is it the taxi driver or our reaction to him that is the origin of the sin? Here is where both Eastern and Western healing traditions speak with a united voice - more important than the amount of stress we experience, is our response to it. In fact, in our efforts to try and evade stress we invariably create further stress! Sure, one should focus on reducing unnecessary stressors from life, but how do we manage the unavoidable stress? I liken the process to managing a pent-up pressure cooker - by opening the valve. Our valves are our coping mechanisms. These are skills, disciplines, tools and habits we cultivate and engage with that allow us to ‘tremor off’ the accumulated stressors of the day and return back to our space of balance. everything you need to live life well

Move your body and spend time in nature. These are both multi-beneficial ways to help rid your body of the effects of stress.

Be more knowledgeable. Learn as much about the stressors in your life, be it your health, your rights or your belief systems, and be empowered to take action to change your life. Knowledge reduces the fear of the unknown and the misunderstood - with knowledge comes empowerment.

Cultivate a spiritual life. Spirituality, a stronger sense of self and a healthy social support network are also great coping mechanisms.

Add reflective practices. Meditation, keeping a journal, expressing creatively through painting, drawing or writing are all beneficial.

Minimalist and author Joshua Becker says de-cluttering isn’t good enough – he insists that de-owning is much more freeing.

Love living with less

Un-cluttering your space can make you feel wonderfully light and free.

did you know? A recent study shows that money spent on experiences, rather than things, brought about a greater sense of wellbeing. So, instead of spending your spare cash on a non-essential dust-collecting item, go on a trip or have an adventure.

40

G

etting out of the habit of buying stuff you don’t need, letting go of excess baggage and living with less, once started, can be mildly addictive. Take a journey through your life by assessing everything you own. Do this with a view to freeing your emotional and psychical self for more space and more opportunities. How much you hold on to or release is closely linked to your emotional state. You might be surprised at how much emotional baggage you free up when you throw away physical stuff. Most people can’t believe how much stuff seems to accumulate – you notice it when you have to move home and you start clearing out. If you think of ownership you think of it as being an asset and a positive thing but there is a price to pay. Everything we own, owns a part of our attention, our time and effort. With ownership comes responsibility. Possessions require everything you need to live life well

protection, care, polishing, insurance and maintenance.

upkeep,

Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre contended that ‘to have’ is one of the three categories of human existence (the others being ‘to be’ and ‘to do’). The psychology of ownership has been explored extensively over the years and to fully understand it, one must see that possessions can also be regarded as people (my lover, my child) as well as things other than physical objects – words or ideas are also viewed in terms of ‘mine’. Debates abound, however, and while ‘having’ is seen as an intrinsic human need, having too much is also linked to not being able to self-actualise – it distracts and detracts.

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. William Morris – textile designer, writer and artist

livewell green living

SHOULD IT STAY OR SHOULD IT GO? Possessions can bring a sense of security, creating a deep sense of self erosion if they are lost or taken away. Your possessions often offer a symbolic sense of who you are and give you context and continuity. Even birds’ take possession of the tree they’ve built their nest in, defending their territory with a fierce sense of ownership. But just how do you sift through your clutter to create a less muddled environment? Minimalist and author Joshua Becker says de-cluttering isn’t good enough – he insists that de-owning is much more freeing. The difference is in where you put the ‘stuff’ you’ve deemed not necessary. If you create a space in the top of a cupboard or even rent storage space for it, it’s still there, in your life and your mind. If you get rid of it entirely, it takes up none of your attention. When getting rid of things, do it with recycling in mind. Consider how else or where else the item could be used, (the last glass left in a set could be a toothbrush holder, other items may be welcomed by a friend or charity) Scan what you have and make categories to help your assessment. These could be: purely sentimental; useful and needed; useful but not essential; beautiful and functional; beautiful but useless.

TIPS USE THE 6-MONTH TEST. IF YOU HAVEN’T LOOKED AT, USED OR THOUGHT ABOUT AN ITEM FOR 6 MONTHS, CHANCES ARE YOU DON’T REALLY NEED IT. WHEN BUYING A NEW ITEM, INVESTIGATE ITS ORIGIN AND MANUFACTURE SO YOU CAN ENSURE NEW PURCHASES ARE AS KIND AS POSSIBLE TO THE ENVIRONMENT. ASK A FRIEND TO HELP YOU MAKE DECISIONS – PEOPLE ARE FAR LESS LIKELY TO MAKE A ‘KEEP’ DECISION IF THE ITEM ISN’T THEIRS.

MAKE IT COUNT Once you’ve made your piles, decide how to go forward. If you want to donate some of your unwanted goods to a charity, find out if they actually need it. Sell the items you don’t want and use the extra cash to get something you really need. That huge armchair that no one sits on and doesn’t fit in your home can be sold or swapped for a storage bin or something else you need. You may want to create a ritual bonfire for all those old love letters – this could help create closure with past relationships.

EMOTIONAL CLUTTER Emotional baggage is quite simplistically negative emotions that we cling to and build on whenever a similar negative situation occurs. For example, if the first time you felt fear (as a young child) was linked to someone taking away your favourite toy, you may well feel the same sense of trepidation when someone touches your ‘things’ without your expressed permission. After a time of not dealing with the fear, it could become an automatic reaction, where your behaviour comes across as somewhat selfish or irrational. It may not be at all what you’re actually thinking or feeling, but the automatic response will also dictate how other people respond to you and will affect your relationships. Letting go of that first fear could spark a domino effect of letting go of all the fearful emotions tied up in similar situations, freeing you of a constricting and untrue behaviour or thought pattern. This is why it’s important to examine your split-second responses to certain situations and truly explore the root cause of such reactions.

MAKE IT COUNT Getting rid of emotionally charged items in your life isn’t easy. Ask yourself how the item is serving you and check the emotional response it engenders. For example, travel brochures from a dream holiday that didn’t happen, (you broke up with your lover) might spur emotions like guilt or anger, sadness, disappointment, hopelessness and so on. Those types of emotions won’t serve you. The lover is gone, the holiday didn’t happen – don’t dwell on that; rather remember the joy of planning and the love shared. Then move on by throwing out the ‘stuff’. In other words, keep the memories, but ditch the things.

Use the concept of upcycling (making something new from something old) to make a winter snuggie pad. Winter is fast approaching and many of us want that snuggle-up, cozy feeling on cold winter nights. It’s super easy to make your own up-cycled heat pad that you can pop into the microwave to soothe aching muscles and keep you warm and toasty. Eco Diva Nicole Sherwin offers DIY tips.

Eco Diva Snuggie Heat Pad What you will need: • • • • • •

An old T-shirt to ‘up-cycle’. A pair of scissors and pins Cotton thread and needle About 2 bags of rice 5-10 drops Lavender essential oil 5-10 drops Peppermint essential oil

Start by finding an old T-shirt. Cut the T-shirt in half from one armpit line to the other. Disregard the upper part of the T-shirt for this recipe. Fold the remaining piece in half. Pin and then sew by hand or machine along the open areas apart from one side area which will be used to fill with the rice mixture. Empty rice into a mixing bowl. Add in the essential oils and mix thoroughly. Pour the rice mixture into the open side area until you feel there is enough ‘stuffing’. Pin the open side together and sew up by hand or by machine. Shake your new Eco Diva Snuggie Heat Pad until all the rice is even. Heat your Eco Diva Snuggie in the Microwave for 1 minute on high. N.B The lavender and peppermint essential oils act as muscle relaxants and anti spasmodic, great for tired or stressed neck, back and shoulder muscles.

“Something of great significance that always arises for me when talking about the Bushmen, is this absolute resonance that so many people have with the subject . . . it is as if there is something still present as content in their souls which remembers, which remembers that they too were once First People, for there was a time on this earth when all humans were archetypal in both form and manner. This primal memory is neither frivolous nor fanciful . . . it is a very real residual memory which lives within the Soul memory of many people today. It is my understanding that we were all once ‘First people.”

I

n his newly released book The Bushman Winter Has Come (Penguin), he presents endless messages and insights for everyone living on the planet, especially those searching for a deeper meaning and context to life, who feel a restlessness or emptiness in their soul or those wanting more connection with spirit and mystery. Through stories, dances and songs he makes it convincing and possible to see how one can live within the world of spirit, “to become certain that it is acceptable to believe in that which you cannot see… to know, that what is unknown is also true”.

In his incredible time with the /Gwikwe people he unearths an understanding of life on a timescale that spans from the very beginning, from the First people to where we are now and what might be in the future. Towards a time we might answer the /Gwikwe’s morning greeting, Tsamkwa/tge? (are your eyes nicely open) with a confident Yes. everything you need to live life well

“There are a thousand race memories, stories and metaphors that show the way, and as we know the nature of that which we leave behind, we will know more of the nature of that which we take forward.”

Growing up, from the first memories Paul ever had, he had the feeling of bringing something forward from a past life… “an innate sense of my Soul journey through many cycles of time, through cycles of life and death and rebirth”… “I was a child filled with feelings. a nudging of dreams from my Soul-body, ancient memories held in my blood, my water, and in me the yearning to be a hunterwarrior…a past life unresolved…a circle not closed. I knew I would go to the desert, my heartland… fuelled by faith and hope, I would go because I remembered and I was born with that wind in my head.”

livewell green living

Paul’s dreams called him strongly, he had an irresistible compulsion to follow and literally drove as far as he could into the wilderness and then with not much more than a bag of dried fruit kept walking until he found the Bushmen and with them, a sense of belonging. His role as pathfinder is incredibly inspirational and reassuring, forging the way for others who might also be looking for the extraordinary. “I think it is an integral part of human evolution to carry, in knowledge, the truth of that which came before us . . . the absence or presence of that knowledge reflects clearly in who we are now.” Paul speaks “deeply within the human Soul, where that feeling of emptiness persists, and with it the insecurity that compels us to the futile chasing of illusions, of rainbows we have no hope of catching.” “I dream of knowledge that has receded in the face of ignorance, but which lies dormant and waiting in wild and sacred places for all of us…for each of you who seek to know… and you must go into these places and open yourself in a way you have not done before, and what is yours will come to you. For this manner of communion in nature is the process by which we are bound in Spirit to all life, that which stands in service and sacrifice to humanity. Such is the human moral obligation to the whole living world.” And so his story goes: “Long ago time when the world was inhabited only by the First People, a world within which the lives of animals and humans and all that lived upon the earth were intertwined in a way that we can now barely perceive… no boundary between visible and invisible worlds…a time of mystical creatures and nature spirits, of elven-like humans who lived within the realm of spirit as easily as they did within the physical world.”

On a walk-about with one of the elders, Paul tells how Dzero-O asks him if he can see the ostrich next to the tree in the distance. Even after telling him to look ‘with long eyes’, Paul still cannot see anything. About 12 miles later when they finally reach the tree, they see the ostrich spoor as described by the old man. Dzero-O explains how he feels different animals through a kind of tapping in his body. He is able to read the feelings in his body as pictures, and bring them to cognition. He feels the ostrich at the back of his right shoulder, feels when the women are returning, feels where the eland is or when the springbok is coming. Paul says, “I begin to comprehend the depth of his relationship with the earth..an intimate companionship without boundaries…communion on a level as profound as life itself…a sharing of common truth.” Paul finds that in himself he starts feeling “memory lines that have been opened in my being…the lines that bind us to more than we are.” “At this earlier time, three thousand years ago and before, people living on the earth were more joined in clairvoyant consciousness than today, each Soul in communion with the whole of life…hence the common thread of wisdom that runs through the core culture of all the world’s aboriginal peoples, for all were connected to the same source at the same time in earth history.” “There is a common thread that runs through the stories and songs of all bushman culture, the same truth told and sung in many parts of the Kalahari. These are the story songs of the old people, and all we humans come through the old people, the Kho Kho…the ‘people’s people’ whom we call the early race.” “It is said that the Bushmen carry the strands of a cellular memory that goes back

over a hundred thousand years, to a time when all peoples on the earth were of common ancestry…the Adams and the Eves of humankind. Understanding the Bushmen, the spirit of the First People takes us into an understanding of our own beginnings.” “We modern humans are compelled to understand what we know, compelled to become fully conscious, compelled to take a will-full part in the education of our Souls. Our place in time requires of us a clarity of purpose and nothing less will take us forward from here.” “We must come to understand the nature of true power, for it is not the egoistical illusion we pander to. We must resolve our innate need to conquer and control the physical world, for the origins of this destructive response are archetypal, stemming from our separation from oneness… as we descend deeper into matter and materialism, we see ourselves as separate from Spirit or God and so by inference separate from our Selves. It is this gap that we spend our lives trying to close, and from this stems the primal insecurity that creates the need to control that which is outside of ourselves. The purpose of our Soul journey here on earth is to consciously traverse and reconcile the disparity within, to close the gap between lower self and higher self, and so effect the spiritual evolution of humanity.” “Standing now at such a critical juncture in human evolution, we must be reminded that we share the blood and memory of these First People and of all of humanity before us. We must feel our way back into that early time of the mysteries and before, through the story songs to the first words, through all the remembered wisdom…for that was the time of our beginning, and our knowledge of the past will be our strength into the future, and so it is written. “

One can come close to knowing this truth in the world of the Bushmen where some of this knowledge and practice is still kept. “Although they no longer wholly access this ancient wisdom, much of the feeling and memory is still alive in Bushmen today, and there are some among them who are able to ‘call to life’ this inner memory in the way of the old people. It is this ancient relationship with the world of Spirit, which more than anything else, compels the lives of the last wild Bushmen.” www.wellnesswarehouse.com

IN SEARCH OF SOUL Some say that our external life is just a framework and context for the real work that resides in the inner workings of the soul. New Zealand based Therese McLachlan and Michael Owen refer to an ‘indigenous soul’ they assure me everyone has. They believe we should cast manipulation aside and allow this indigenous soul to show itself. “When we are not trying, not saving the world or ourselves, then the indigenous soul comes out of hiding, unbidden, unexpected, and magic begins. Different expressions of the soul come to us veiled, in strange guises and restless enthusiasms. But until we invite it to play its magic it has a secret life of its own”, says McLachlan. “Ironically, out of the colonialists who swept on indigenous people around the world to try and ‘civilise’ them, we now see the heirs of those same people going back to consult what is left of the so-called primitive people to try and find meaning in their lives. Somehow we subject our inner worlds to the same colonization where we try and take our own original wilderness, and the archetypes, and bring them under control so they can be made to do our bidding, and the inner wilderness can be tamed through the conscious imposition of new thinking. Thoughts and attitudes are treated like commodities that can be traded on the inner market. If they are shoddy they can be returned and different raw thoughts can be fed into the production line. McLachlan describes the indigenous soul as making you purr when it touches you. “It has silent knowledge of what is not here anymore. It is natural and like nature does not give explanations of itself and is always outside the law. In this way it demands from us an integrity that cannot be legislated. It worships the graven images of music, story, dance and metaphor, and invisibly attends all celebrations of life and death. When looking for it, know that ceremony awakens it and work without vision alienates it. It loves purpose and meaning that comes like lightning in the blood, or abrades like sand between the toes of ill-tempered honey badgers. It doesn’t like mission statements framed on walls, lavender airbrushed auras, or anything that denies it has a physical body. It is indigenous because it comes from the very beginning of the psyche.”

everything you need to live life well

It is all and none of these…. It is our own belief system that stands in our way - our limited view of ourselves and the world, coupled with all the little judgments that go along with it. Our biggest enemy is our mind and yet it is the one thing we can take complete control of if we dare go on the journey within. The problem thus far has been that we believed we had to master our thoughts to master our minds – but I don’t believe it’s possible to master our thoughts. So we try and try to meditate and go on this journey within where we are either meant to empty our minds of thought or will ourselves into thinking positive thoughts and being happyand guess what? We keep failing. And this leads to that quiet, niggling sensation of “I’m not getting life right” which then leads to more self-judgment. The deeper truth is we have no power over our thoughts, but we do have power over how we respond to those thoughts. When that initial angry or disappointed or elated thought pops into your head – you have no control over where it came from, or what triggered it. But you absolutely do have control over how to act on those thoughts, including how you view yourself and the world. This tiny gap between thought and response is filled with one thing only: choice. I invite you to embark on an inner journey that explores all the unconscious choices you make every day and notice which ones habitually keep you trapped in an old, limiting belief spiral. Simply the act of continuously choosing, every day, to let go of a ‘default’ choice pattern, will allow you to free the hero within…. Then stand by and watch as the whole, powerful you emerges to claim your true place in the world.

You don’t need any experience when you dance, 'you come home to your body'. Surrendering to movement, you begin to connect with yourself, while you discover the intoxicating medicine of movement.

Journey through Dance

did you know?

Science says dance and dance often. Research concludes that frequent social dancing can have a role in reducing your risk of dementia, by 76%. That’s because, along with the physical exercise benefits, social dancing requires your mind to make split second decisions and to learn something new on an ongoing basis (this does mean that rote dancing isn’t as beneficial)

48

Dancing as a transformative practice has been used in many cultures throughout history.

D

ance movement therapy has even been formalised as a qualification in various Universities and Colleges, and works on the premise that emotion and movement are directly related. It’s considered a psychotherapeutic practise, using movement and dance to address emotional, cognitive, social, behavioural and physical conditions. There are many different variations: Biodanza, Gabriella Roth’s Five Rhythms, Eurythmy, Laban and Nia are just some of the forms available. everything you need to live life well

MORE THAN MOVEMENT TRY IT OUT>

fitness, sleep & massage

The intrinsic response of movement to music is common the world over. Whether you’re the next dance sensation or have two left feet, you probably experience an automatic movement response when listening to music that resonates with your soul. You may have heard the adage to ‘dance like nobody’s watching’ as a way in which to let go and enjoy who you are – it’s a case in point then that dance can be a uniquely intimate expression of your state of mind, exposing the very depth and rawness of your truth to anyone who is watching or simply to yourself.

MORE THAN MOVEMENT It’s more than just a dance class – taking ancient practises into consideration and combining them with modern science, dance movement therapy is designed to help you experience yourself in a different way, by using movement to gently guide your body into a meditative process, allowing you to tap in to your innate inner wisdom.

Cape Town based Leigh Goodman has been dancing most of her life and swears by the power of dance to heal emotions, create connection, and explore the mystery of the self. Her routines are designed to make the dancer experience the body, mind and soul coming together to heal, awaken and empower. She uses dance and movement therapy to gently guide an inward journey, exploring the mystery of who you really are, in a safe, supportive and friendly environment.

The School of Movement Medicine categorises the passage through dance therapy into three journeys:

Her classes explore the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical connection to the body, mind and spirit. Incorporating dance and movement therapy, deep healing processes, freemovement through self-expression, intention, manifestation exercises and allows for a space to release and to move energy to where it is appropriate. Included in the mix is meditation, creative visualisation, conscious movement, healing, and shamanism.

Responsibility addresses the past, present and future by transforming the past into a source of strength, wisdom and inspiration.

Living the dream relates to fulfilment, interconnection and realisation – achieved by the realisation you are at one with the source of creation.

It’s this incredibly opening power that’s the base of dance movement therapy. Using your own body and emotion, you choreograph a healing space for emotional, physical and spiritual maladies. Dancing promotes connection; with yourself and connection with others, encouraging our bodies, hearts and minds to co-create together.

Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.

Empowerment is accessed through the heart, body and mind and encompasses consciousness by awakening and aligning kinaesthetic, emotional and cognitive intelligence to create strong foundations for your future journey.

IS IT FOR YOU? Everyone goes through phases in their life when a little motivation is needed to move forward, get out of a slump or simply open up to your own possibilities and opportunities. If you’re hesitant to try conventional treatments or medicines, dance therapy may just be the life-changing action you need. If you are feeling stuck and afraid of moving forward; feel unbalanced or disconnected; are stuck in negative thought patterns; are hurt and need to release pain; experience depression, stress or anxiety; or feel ungrounded, dance movement therapy is certainly a space you’ll find solace, change and healing. Dance therapy can assist in unblocking and balancing your chakras; generates deeper mental and emotional clarity; helps release emotional blockages; allows a deeper connection to your body, mind and soul, and increases your sense of wellbeing.

On a personal level Leigh explains the impact of her dancing: “My journey has shown me that utilising dance and movement can be profoundly healing for so many parts of myself. It has helped me to make friends with my body. It has helped me to be open to more than I could have dreamt before. It has helped me with my posture, self-expression and confidence. It has helped me break free of old belief systems, mind patterns and negative emotions”. When I feel moody, stressed, irritated or angry and I put on music and dance, my world shifts around me. I become clearer, calmer and more relaxed. Nothing seems as bad as it was.

TRY IT OUT Leigh Goodman from Journey through Dance is running a special dance workshop in June in Johannesburg and Cape Town on Empowering and Awakening the Feminine. The classes create a space for women to explore, empower and embrace their feminine sides and to embody the Sacred Feminine in the world. A STEP AHEAD Our feet are the least celebrated part of the body but are magnificent in their design. Twenty six bones, a hundred ligaments and thirty three articulations do incredible work for us. We also have nerve endings in our feet that reflect and connect to the organs in our bodies. Most people neglect their feet, wear badly fitted shoes and end up with callouses, bunions or badly cracked heels. Start paying attention to your feet, massage them, treat them, moisturise them, choose healthy shoes and go barefoot often.

lthough everyone has good and bad days, a healthy self esteem ensures you’re able to more quickly gain equilibrium and recover from setbacks – it creates a good baseline for both mental and physical health. To build and maintain a healthy self esteem, there needs to be a balance between accomplishment and love – merely saying you love your child won’t guarantee a good sense of self

everything you need to live life well

(of course you love them), but at the same time, merely being told they are brilliant also won’t build the right base.

Be what you say: Walk your talk, if what you say and do is different kids will pick up on your behavioural cues instead of your vocal instructions – not only will this give them the impression that you’re not to be trusted, it’ll also negatively affect the amount they value themselves.

If you have a low self esteem and tend to beat yourself up often, this will negatively impact on your child. Take a look at your own self-talk and attitude towards yourself and make the effort to work on it for your child’s sake.

Work your Words: How you frame your encouragement makes a difference. If your child doesn’t make it into a sports team, for example, instead of telling them they’ll have better luck next time, bring reality in by saying, “I’m sorry you didn’t make the team, but I’m really proud of you for the effort you made.” This way, you’re acknowledging failure, while showing love and pride without disappointment.

Re-set misperceptions: Be aware of generalised statements that can impact your child well into the future. For example, if they’re generally a good student but are battling with a subject, don’t allow the statement, “I’m too stupid to do this” become a mantra. Balance that out by saying, “You’re actually doing well with everything else, maybe we need to spend time together and figure out how to crack this subject”

Sandwich your statements: Positive, realistic feedback is essential. Even when admonishing your child for something, insert an encouraging statement. For example, if they seldom clean up their room even when asked, say something like, “I’m so pleased you enjoy spending time in your room playing, don’t you think it would be lovely to have it all neatly packed up so you’re able to see all your toys?” Helping them re-frame tasks in a positive light will help them make better choices in future and allow them to see value in those choices.

Listen on their level: Not only is it important to truly listen to your child and allow them the space to talk without interruption, it’s also good communication practise to get down on their level – physically. Kneel or sit down so you can be in direct eye contact – this gives them the impression you are fully focussed on them, lending import to what they are saying and letting them know they are valued by you.

Safe and comfortable: Routine is important for children so they understand boundaries and feel secure. Although many people aren’t keen on strict rules, children need to know where they stand in their world. Also, keep arguments between you and your spouse away from your kids. This can give them a sense of being out of control at home, which creates insecurity and a doubtful sense of self.

3 tips

to love more > STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

It’s quite natural to want to constantly tell your little darling that everything they do is perfect and they are simply the most beautiful, clever, funny, talented soul on the planet. But, that’s a sure recipe for building an arrogant child with low self esteem. Everyone has their particular areas of brilliance and then too, areas that lie outside of their capabilities. It’s important to help your child to recognise and accept both. This allows them to understand that not everything is within their grasp to excel at and that it’s okay to fail sometimes. It’s a delicate dance, but it’s important to reveal reality to your children so that life’s disappointments don’t overwhelm them.

HARD WORK & ACCOMPLISHMENT

A sense of achievement is satisfying and builds self belief. Setting the example of working hard at something to achieve a result is a vital life lesson. Allow your children to try tasks and gently encourage them to keep trying – for example, when building a puzzle, don’t allow them to give up because it’s too hard; rather talk through ways in which the task can be achieved and set them up with clues like building the border first or sorting the pieces by colour. Avoid being flippant about how ‘easy’ the puzzle is, but take time to understand their level of frustration or lack of knowledge and teach them to think the problem through.

BODY IMAGE Random affection: Be spontaneous in your expressions of love – give good hugs and touch your child often, offering them reassurance they are loved in any situation.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

Children pick up your cues – help them achieve a healthy body image from toddler age by watching what you say about your own body (don’t denigrate the features you don’t like, rather highlight the ones you do like); encourage exercise as fun (for fitness rather than to be thin) and not as a chore that has to be done; don’t use food as punishment or reward (by giving them a sweet if they clean their room or withholding dessert if they’ve been naughty), rather instil the truthful nurturing and healthful aspects of food and healthy food choices.

I struggled to bond with my daughter Hana. She was born via an emergency C-section and the procedure was rushed and stressful and caused immense anxiety for me. During my stay in hospital, I felt incredibly detached from her and kept longing for my son who was home with his Dad. I never had an opportunity to spend some special time with him before we turned his world upside down by giving him a sister.

I felt guilty for being away from him, the idea of loving another baby as much as I loved him suddenly seemed impossible and the guilt that came with all these feelings, made the whole thing unbearable.

Going home didn’t fix anything and I continued to feel detached from her. I also found myself longing for my son and the relationship we had pre-Hana. I loved Hana, but I wasn’t in love with her and I felt like the worst Mom in the world for having these feelings.

When Hana smiled for the first time at six weeks, my issues slowly started to disappear. I remember her looking at me with a huge gummy smile. It was the first time I felt truly connected to her. I was her Mom and she knew it-and I finally knew it. Over the next few weeks, our love affair intensified. Three months on and it is as if that dark patch never existed. I know now, that there is no place for ‘guilt’ in a Mom’s vocabulary and that you can get through anything with just a little selfawareness and patience.

VITAL YOUTH

It’s not a new story – the search for the elusive fountain of youth, but with medical science offering the opportunity to live longer, there’s now an even bigger push to look younger. There’s certainly nothing wrong with wanting to look your very best and in fact people should be encouraged to enhance their natural beauty as much as possible. But there’s a disconnect between reality and fantasy these days – even though almost everyone is aware of the power of Photoshop and photographic techniques that make celebrities and models look far more beautiful, trim, sleek and younger than they actually are, people still aspire to look like the media version of their favourite movie star or underwear model. At the same time, how often have you cringed in vicarious embarrassment because of the aging man whose fake tan shines a little too orange through the sparse tufts of transplanted hair, or the granny whose augmented breasts seem to have a life of their own when seen in concert with her sagging knees and wrinkled neck? It just doesn’t fit. Beauty can be faked, but vitality can’t – the inner energy that arises from being true to yourself surely has so much more authentic attractiveness than a medically enhanced feature.

did you know? In the 1960s, Psychologist Paul Ekman identified 3000 facial expressions, cataloguing the ‘essential repertoire of human emotion’ – identifying 43 separate action units (contraction or relaxation of one or more muscle) which described every distinct combination of muscular movements the face could make. Later, the Facial Action Coding System was developed and is still used today by animators, psychologists and interviewers, who can spot insincere smiles, which may be a cue for lying.

did you know? According to The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, non-invasive procedures have topped surgical procedures. The top five are: toxins or neuromodulators injections (Botox) (32.7%), hyaluronic acid injections (20.1%), laser hair removal (13.1%), autologous fat injections (taking a patient's fat from one location and transferring it in the same patient to another location) (5.9%) and IP Laser treatment (4.4%)

YOUR STORY

National Geographic magazine is famous for publishing photographs of indigenous people worldwide whose faces elaborately reflect the lives they’ve lead. The famous Afghan girl with the piercing eyes is an iconic photograph, and her beauty is all natural, without enhancement. But it’s the people whose faces are lined – offering an intimate portrait of every moment of laughter, sadness, joy and anguish they’ve experienced – that tell a story impossible to communicate in a few lines of text. Brandi Carlile says it all with her lyrics: “All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am, so many stories of where I've been, and how I got to where I am ... “

BOTOX COMPROMISES FACIAL FEEDBACK

Psychologists explain that facial feedback gives much more information about a person’s feeling that we ever imagine. What the face and eyes are expressing is a primary way to fully engage with what is being communicated. No matter how much of a poker face you have, your facial muscles still twitch and move intricately to express your inner thoughts and feelings. If your face is completely unlined, and immovable, this essential insight into your own soul becomes unavailable. This extends to our ability to feel empathy as well – it blunts our ability to relate to other’s facial expressions and in turn damages our capacity to fully relate to and engage with people – negatively affecting social interactions and creating an inability to form supportive, healthy relationships. The knock-on effect of this could be social isolation, possibly leading to depression, hopelessness and emotional distress.

Balancing Beauty

Getting older inevitably comes with less skin elasticity and the subsequent wrinkles from the repeated muscle movement of your normal facial expressions. Environmental toxins, processed food, bad lifestyle choices and excesses (like too much sun exposure, being over-stressed or drinking more than you should) all also contribute to the formation of wrinkles. But just as the faded scar on your knee reminds you of the epic bicycle race you won when you were 10, each line on your face preciously reflects your journey in this life. But that’s not to say doing what you can to soften those lines or reduce their effect on your self-image is completely out. The concept of growing older gracefully lends itself to learning self respect; loving yourself enough to treat your body, inside and out, with the care and attention it deserves. Look after yourself well by making the right choices when it comes to diet, exercise and lifestyle habits. And if you feel the need for a little scientific help, ensure you’re doing it for the right reason – to enhance your own mental and psychical wellbeing – not because you’re aspiring to a fantasy that won’t reflect the true beauty of your uniquely designed and life-filled self.

"

Being in a prayerful state automatically creates a sense of the sacred and divine; instantly we are humbled and it is in this state we more easily express gratitude and receive the healing, the power of manifestation and the gifts we yearn for.

Prayer SAY A LITTLE

Dr. Dossey, author of Meaning and Medicine (Gale Group) cites prayer as one of the best kept secrets in modern science.

Practise being

In life much emphasis is placed on doing as opposed to just being, yet much more can be achieved in a being state. Prayer requires this type of mindfulness. Dr Larry Dossey says prayers are non-lineal. Quoting Isaiah which says “I shall answer their prayers before they are made,” he talks about strange time reversals. “People don’t want to rethink time and space; they want to hold on to that linear Newtonian view that cause always precedes effect when what we have here is the effect coming before the cause. Prayerfulness is a psychological state, an attitude, a feeling, a way of existing or being rather than dictating the terms to God.”

60

S

pirituality and religion aside, data shows there are astonishing things you can do with feeling states and attitudes. For instance, Dossey says one of the most effective ways to lower cholesterol is sitting down for fifteen minutes a day just doing nothing. Whatever your feelings or beliefs about a higher presence, about holiness or divinity - concentrated focus on the mysterious power of creation and manifestation and being in a space where you can get to the core of your situation, understand your emotions and focus on something you want be it emotional, physical, spiritual or material – is a practice guaranteed to enhance your state of inner peace. Sometimes prayer can simply be a way of having a hugely honest conversation with yourself –a primary benefit of praying is that it is almost impossible to be dishonest with yourself while you pray. A meeting of the self with the self in the company of the divine is everything everything you you need need to to live live life life well well

a sacred act that often reveals obstructions and blockages to healing. It might show you where you have residual resentment or a situation where forgiveness is required. Prayer certainly doesn’t centre around asking some higher being for favours, says counselor Anne Grant.

“It’s about a conversation, and exploration of your innermost feelings. It’s more than a ritualistic practice said by rote with no flow-over to the soul. It’s not necessary to be eloquent or verbose when entering the prayer space. Just be present.”

PRAYERWORKS

SACRED PRAYER BEADS Set your prayers in motion and,

If you’re new to the concept of praying, Grant recommends using the following as a guideline:

possibility and come into being

Begin with gratitude State (to yourself or out loud) what you are currently grateful for; go through the people in your life and find gratitude for each of them (even a person who has been awful to you may have sparked a new life direction or an insight into who you are); think about the world – the environment, nature, conveniences, beauty and express thanks for things that bring joy and fulfillment to your life.

SACRED PRAYER BEADS HELP

Light & joy look inside and acknowledge the beauty you have – not just physical attributes, but the aspects of you that are truly beautiful – your generosity, caring attitude, helpfulness, etc. Celebrate those aspects and grow strong in the knowledge you were created uniquely you.

YOU FOCUS AND PROVIDE THE DISCIPLINE TO CREATE AND FORM YOUR INNERMOST DESIRES; TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE AND GIVE THANKS Each set comes in a beautiful fragranced wooden box with specific prayers you can use and inspiration if you prefer to make up your own. You can wear the beads or keep them for special prayer times.

find the things in your heart that you are holding on to with anger – put them briefly in your mind, then release them. During that process, find loopholes of thankfulness so you can let go fully. Take any feeling of guilt and first forgive yourself for what you perceive you’ve done wrong – let go of that guilt. Guilt debilitates.

Prayer variations include:

As with any discipline, prayer may need some practice. You may find it easier to write your prayers than to speak them; some practices use prayer beads to help concentration and focus. And others recommend a quiet space with no distractions to help focus. Know that by reaching inside and taking time to focus on your true self is in itself an act of worship towards your creator. Acknowledging and respecting your true needs, wants, desires and being is presenting yourself to the universe with love, gratitude and truthfulness. This is both honouring and healing.

POLARITY THERAPY “True health is the harmony of life within us, consisting of peace of mind, happiness and well-being. It is not merely a question of physical fitness, but rather a result of the soul finding free expression through the mind and body of that individual. Such a person radiates peace and happiness”. Dr. Randolph Stone

P

olarity Therapy was spearheaded by Dr Randolph Stone but its roots are thousands of years older and its origins come from many different healing arts. Dr Stone qualified in osteopathy, chiropractics and the natural therapies. He felt that man was given all the healing tools needed, if only he could encourage and allow their natural functioning. To him, healing involves more than just medicine: it is an art and at a deeper level, a spiritual quest. Health, he believed is based on our tuning in to deeper truths and a way of life which expresses these truths. A Polarity therapist acts as a facilitator encouraging this harmonising process. Participants need to understand the concept of accepting responsibility for their well-being and foster a positive mental attitude. Methods of treatment are preventative, curative and applicable to many health problems. Central to Polarity Therapy is the concept of a life energy which is in constant pulsation from positive to negative poles via a neutral position, creating fields and energetic lines of force. Polarity addresses four related areas of life: Bodywork; Polarity stretching postures; Cleansing diets and Awareness facilitation. Disease, according to Dr Stone, is a process which occurs when the life energy is blocked, or out of balance, and also results from improperly dissipated energy.

64

BODYWORK ‘ENERGETIC TOUCH’ There are three different types of touch in Polarity, a gentle (satvic), stimulating (rajasic) and a deep (tamasic) touch. These are administered with an energetic rather than a manipulative focus. Bipolar contacts, using both hands, with any of the three types of touch, can be deeply relaxing and may lead to an emotional release. Since we store our emotions, thought patterns and memories within our bodies, a body session may bring emotions to the surface, which is part of the healing and elimination process.

COMMUNICATION & FACILITATION Energy follows thought: as we think so we are. Polarity helps clients become aware of negative emotional patterns detrimental to health, allowing them to take responsibility for their choices in life. “It is the finer mental, emotional and spiritual blocks which cause the physical blockages and with a growing awareness, positive attitudes of thinking and healthier life styles, we can experience good health on all levels.”

ENERGETIC NUTRITION Polarity assesses each person’s energy system, habits and personalities when recommending health-building diets. Natural foods keep us vital while processed lifeless foods deplete the energy system. Cleansing foods eliminate toxins from the body/mind system and transform the body’s acidic state to an alkaline one. Polarity everything you need to live life well

uses the 5 elements of ether, fire, water air and earth. An imbalanced fire element may result in arthritic joints, boils, feelings of intense anger or even suppression, bad circulation or weak digestion. Balancing fire requires bodywork and awareness but is also achieved through cleansing, watery, and cooling foods (salads and fruits) which will calm the fire element.

STRETCHING EXERCISES Exercises are grounding and gentle creating a more concrete awareness of the body and releasing tension and pent up emotions. ‘Ha breaths’ or ‘woodchopper’ exercises balance the fire element and open the heart to feelings of kindness and compassion. Scissor kicks open up the sinuses and calm the parasympathetic nervous system. Basic squats and spinal stretches release blockages and realign posture, massage internal organs and help elimination of waste products and toxins. For more information contact Karen Levin. Karen has been a Polarity Practitioner for 25 years. She is running a 3-day Polarity workshop in September and a 2-year Polarity Practitioners Training Programme to follow. She is also available for individual sessions, in Cape Town. Karen Levin is available (after 2.30 week-days) on Cell: 082 216 3837, or Email: polarityenergy@gmail.com

Bossom of the earth

Using the high increase and incidence of breast cancer as an analogy for the lack of care and nurture we display for the earth and each other we see it as a message for everyone to take notice of.

B

reasts are a widespread symbol of nurture. They represent motherly love, compassion, comfort and the tender care of a nursing mother. Almost all of us have our first experience of nurture through suckling mother’s breast. The Ayurvedic perspective of breasts offers an interesting new angle to the incidence of breast cancer. Looking at the world in a circular, rather than a Westernised linear, perspective, Vedic teaching says that all the great cosmic forces are mirrored within the human body. Man and women are microcosms of the macrocosm – and women’s breasts, which are our first source of nourishment as we enter the world, abound in cosmic significance. The earth (or Mother Nature) is often symbolised as a fertile woman with large breasts – full of nurture and new life. To this end, it makes sense to view the world as such – a source of nurture and life that should ideally be revered and cared for. The fact that we have a scourge of breast cancer – at almost epidemic levels is something everyone needs to look at. As a

Vedic writer says: “The woman with breast cancer is each one of us, poisoned by the very substances with which we are polluting the earth. She is the entire human race, our capacity of love, nurturance, and self-giving affected by the cancer of greed, hatred, prejudice, possessiveness, and the self-serving attitude which have led us to rape, abuse and pollute our mother earth in the interest of short-term gains, profits, superficial appearances, and the maintenance of the status quo.” Breast cancer brings us an urgent message – a multi-level message on a spiritual, physical and environmental level. From an emotional perspective breasts are representative of love, nurture and self-giving. Breast cancer seen from this viewpoint highlights the lack of love and care in the world – how we don’t operate in community anymore and often barely know our neighbours. In a spiritual sense, we see how meaninglessness and existential despair have increased – the breasts are closely linked to the heart chakra (where devotion and divine love reside). Ayurvedic teaching proposes that facing death is a

way in which to awaken our spirit to truth. So, it seems that breast cancer can be seen as a symptom of the soul-sickness of this modern world. It teaches us that we need to be more in touch; with ourselves and others – to not spend so much time and energy chasing and serving profit, time-saving or urgency; but to rather hold life precious and rediscover meaning. Breast cancer can be hereditary or it can be caused by lifestyle decisions, which means that it can be prevented by making good choices. The Vedic teaching calls diseases of lifestyle ‘crimes against wisdom’ – graphically outlining the bad choices we are prone to make as humans, which can lead to disease. As such, the first lesson to be learned from breast cancer is that we are out of touch with our bodies. Breast cancer is a message for everyone. Encourage your mothers, sisters, daughters to look after themselves. Encourage them to keep a watch out for this insidious disease. And support those women who have breast cancer – it’s not just an individual problem, it’s a world issue and every individual is ultimately responsible for creating and, with better awareness, preventing this insidious cancer.
