publisher's letter As we move into autumn and the season changes, it’s a good time to reflect on the incredible planet we live on. The intricacies of nature and how each aspect of the natural world affects the next is a beautiful dance we sometimes forget to observe. But the changing seasons bring a certain sense of expectancy and a higher awareness of earth’s movement around the sun. It’s truly interesting that what is healthy for your body is also generally good for the environment. This May we look at ways to tread more lightly on our precious planet. We look at what organic really means and what effect it has on our health and the environment. It’s really about getting back to basics and enjoying the simplicity of things – taking time out to truly engage your senses and being aware of what you’re putting into your body. I think I’m going to give home made cheese a try and store some of those delicious flavoured waters in the fridge for an extra effort towards hydration. We also look at how to integrate the essence of green living into everyday life – the ways that one small action can make a difference to our planet, helping us leave a legacy of care for our children and those who follow. Naturists are big on recommending ‘green exercise’ which covers any physical activity that takes place in nature, but if your joints aren’t feeling quite up to scratch, it can be difficult to get motivated. We highlight natural ways to ease joint pain, helping you get into the swing of things again. Speaking of exercise, we’re also featuring yoga poses for better posture (your core is so important, especially as we spend more and more time sitting in front of computer screens), as well as five fantastic moves to tighten up flabby arms. And, to keep you glowing with positive health this month, we offer tips on how to influence your skins’ beauty from the inside. For new mom’s, we encourage you to give your baby the best nutrients nature has to offer – breast milk. It’s a great month to be alive, make the most of it by being aware of our beautiful world and playing your part in protecting your health and our environment. Make sure you visit the store during May, we are sponsoring free shoulder and neck massages at our Kloof street store. Organically yours Dr Sean Gomes, Co-founder

MOVE FOR HEALTH

WE TRIED IT

Celebrate the World Health Organisation’s ‘Move for Health’ Day on 10th May. Our South African slogan “Vuka South Africa, Move for your health" is a bid to encourage all South Africans to take responsibility for their health through movement. Thirty minutes is the recommended amount of physical activity needed daily. In 2002 a study by the World Health Organisation showed a lack of physical activity as one of the primary risk factors to chronic lifestyle diseases like cardiovascular, diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression and anxiety. Walk, run, jog, cycle, dance, do yoga, play tennis, swim – find your movement and do it daily.

Fit Squared, a popular gym solution is conveniently situated in the heart of Sea Point, at the Piazza Da Luz Centre. Owner Andrew Hirst invited Wellness magazine to try it out. Rouxmia Bougas reports: As a modern day lazy person, I was very excited to experience a gym solution that only requires 20 minutes twice a week. EMS (Electro Muscular Stimulation), is a full body training exercise that uses impulse currents. You have to dress in one of their body suits (or you can buy your own) so that the EMS electrodes can fit onto the skin directly above each of your muscles. Greg, my allotted trainer, turned up the intensity and did some basic training with me. This included squats to lunges and crunches to kick boxing. You feel your abs contracting naturally with every vibration. When I was done, I felt energized and refreshed. It went by so quickly, but the next day my muscles were so stiff I could hardly walk or sit down! EMS is great for cellulite reducing and it shows visible results in a very short period of time (as little as 4 sessions) unlike normal training in a gym. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a busy lifestyle.

At the age of 40, she became pregnant with her first child and developed a keen interest in personal care products. She was astounded to learn that, although the skin absorbs around 64 % of the products applied to it, there were very few available healthy personal care products that worked well.

Clinically Validated Age Defying and Blemish Clearing

Commitment to Healthy Ingredients

Juice Beauty uses powerful ingredients like alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, DMAE, peptides, fat soluble Vitamin C and essential fatty acids for optimum results. Products are clinically validated through Independent Lab studies, that have shown an 85% reduction in free radical skin cell damage (which means less wrinkles and sun spots). Juice Beauty’s Blemish Clearing Regimen won a prestigious Dermatological best results product award and their focus groups showed up to 94% clearing within 4 weeks.

The Juice Beauty team continually searches for the purest, most effective organic ingredients from farms that specialise in sustainable and organic farming. These include organic juices, aloe vera, honey, botanicals, plant oils, and raw cane sugar. Amazing formulations are made without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. Most women switch to an organic lifestyle when they are pregnant because they want to protect themselves from harmful toxins. Juice Beauty makes it possible to stick with these healthy habits, without compromising on looking fabulous.

Commitment to Eco Values Juice Beauty buys the majority of ingredients locally such as the organic green apples from Washington state and organic pomegranates from California’s central valley. They use only sustainably sourced and/or recycled paper and soy ink for all packaging that can be recycled again. The company manufactures the majority of products with Solar Power. Furthermore, Juice Beauty labs are gluten free and conduct no animal testing.

Authentically Organic Antioxidant Juice Base Most beauty products that use ‘organic’ in their marketing use only a few organic ingredients in a water base. This dilutes the total organic content to often less than 5%. Instead of the typical water base that cannot be certified organic or pesticide free, Juice Beauty puts over 100 USDA certified organic powerful ingredients into a 100% certified organic juice base made from over 30 different juices. This brings the total organic content to up to 98% in every product. Juice Beauty meets two rigorous standards: the USDA National Organic Program FOOD standard of 95% or greater organic content and the California Organic Products Act requiring a minimum of 70% total organic content (excluding water). Additionally, Juice Beauty has started the process of NSF (National Science Foundation) certification.

MEET KAREN BEHNKE

CEO and Founder of Juice Beauty

Karen is an extraordinary human being, a triathlon competitor and pesca vegetarian. Despite the time challenges of being Mum to a 15 year old son and 13 year old daughter; wife to a busy cardiologist, and building her organic beauty company (Juice Beauty), Karen finds time to exercise six times a week and competes in triathlons. Karen’s main goal is to keep competing so she feels great and stays young. Have you always been so active? I fell in love with health and wellness as a young child. Being very slight, I was always last to be picked for the kickball teams. This made a great impression on me - I always wanted to be one of the strong kids. During school I did gymnastics, cheerleading and water ballet. Later, in California I had a company where I was teaching five aerobics classes a day. Now I do early morning lap and hurdle workouts, cycling, kickboxing and swimming (we are lucky to have a solar powered salt water lap pool in our back yard). Me and my husband also mountain bike up the Marin County hills where we’ve run into coyotes, fox, bobcats and other wild animals. What influenced you to become a pesca vegetarian? During school there was a chemical spill disaster in my home town in Michigan. Cattle were dying everywhere and nobody knew what was going on. Later researchers came to the school, did blood tests and found fire retardant present in Michigan residents at toxic levels, obviously from meat consumption. Although this disaster caused PBB to be banned, other chemicals were produced in its place. That was a huge influencer. Now I mainly eat wild salmon, organic whole grains, organic fruits and vegetables and of course chocolate.…really any kind of chocolate.

Mostly organic food goes into Karen’s body and it goes without saying that Karen only uses Juice Beauty’s products made with certified organic ingredients on her body.

RECIPE

make it yourself Goats milk cheese lasts for a week in the fridge and can be frozen, but be sure to salt it before freezing and remove as much of the whey as possible (a cheese press is handy for squeezing it all out) – the drier the cheese, the better it’ll freeze.

Say cheese!

Get immense pleasure from making your own cheese at home using goat milk.

G

oat milk has more butterfat and protein than cow’s milk, but less lactose, and it’s naturally homogenized, making it easier for many people to digest. It’s also the easiest cheese to make at home. Try this method to produce a tasty, naturally delicious and versatile snack bearing in mind it takes a day to prepare.

GOATS MILK CHEESE Makes 500g

YOU NEED 4 LITRES GOAT MILK 1 DROP DOUBLE-STRENGTH VEGETABLE RENNET, DISSOLVED IN ¼ CUP OF COOL WATER

TOOLS

did you know? Rennet is an enzyme used to coagulate milk during cheese making. It comes from plants (usually thistle); from microbes in fungus and yeast; or there is a non-vegetarian version from the stomach lining of young calves. 10

CHEESE CLOTH OR A TIGHTLY WOVEN DISH TOWEL LARGE POT WITH LID WOODEN SPOON THERMOMETER STEP 1 • Heat the milk to 23°C (if you use non-pasteurised milk, note that this temperature will not pasteurise it). • Add the rennet mix to the milk, but don’t stir – use an up and down motion with your wooden spoon to integrate the mixture. • Cover the pot and let the mixture stand at approximately 22°C for 14-16 hours.

everything you need to live life well

The cheese will resemble yoghurt (softly solid) and you will begin to see the whey (a mostly clear liquid) separating from the cheese.

STEP 2 • Place your cheese cloth (doubled over) in a colander inside a bowl. Spoon the cheese in and gather the corners of the cloth, tie in knots to secure. You can also weight it down by adding something heavy on top. • Allow it to drain for 6 hours if you want a soft and spreadable cheese, or 12 hours for a cream cheese consistency.

TIPS • •

Before draining, add herbs and spices for a flavoured cheese. Keep it in a smooth yoghurt form by choosing not to drain it. Mix this with fresh fruit or honey and cinnamon for a sumptuous breakfast or desert treat. You can use a chèvre (goats milk cheese) starter culture instead of rennet (in which case you’ll need to heat the milk to 30°C)

The delicious taste of sunshine that resonates in organically grown fruit and vegetables can’t be ignored.

organic DYNAMIC c

i n a rg

O

did you know? South Africa is one of only three African countries that grow genetically modified food commercially. The other countries are Egypt and Burkina Faso.

12

As the world begins to fully recognise the importance of good nutrition and healthy living, organic and healthy food markets are popping up all over the countryside and local stores are offering more variety of real food.

I

t’s no longer a chore to do your weekly grocery shopping; it’s becoming an adventure of the senses.

But what does organic really mean? Essentially, the word organic means relating to or derived from living organisms. With that definition, then, all food could be deemed organic. However, the general understanding of organic is unadulterated – no added chemicals or pesticides, well nourished soils used to grow produce, or animal feed that’s chemical and toxinfree. It’s also understood to be closer to how Mother Nature intended. Most people believe that organic food is packed with more goodness than conventionally created food. But, it really goes deeper than that – many commercially available cereals everything you need to live life well

for example, offer added vitamins and minerals, theoretically making them even better for you than a ‘natural’ cereal. While added vitamins and minerals may assist in keeping your daily intake of essentials in check, the grain these are added to may just be genetically modified and not contain the whole grain (many cereals only contain the endosperm, the least nutritious and most calorific part of the grain). Many of the fruit and vegetables available in stores are touted as being ‘long-life’ and they do tend to stay fresher or crispier for longer.

Chart of some of the key

DIFFERENCES >

In today’s world, we expect to be able to buy fruit on a Saturday and still have it as fresh the next Saturday. But the question is – how does it stay so ‘fresh’? Genetic modification and chemicals of course. If you want convenience and week-long freshness, you may have to forgo natural goodness.

TIPS WHEN BUYING PACKAGED FOOD, CHOOSE ONE’S WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF ADDITIVES LISTED. ALSO, IN THE WORDS OF JAMIE OLIVER, IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND A WORD ON THE INGREDIENT LIST, DON’T BUY IT.

One with the environment It’s well recognised that organic farming methods are kinder to the environment. It hasn’t been scientifically proven, though, that organic food is indeed healthier for you – but, that’s not so say it isn’t so. Also, the delicious taste of sunshine that resonates in organically grown fruit and vegetables can’t be ignored. But, whether you go for only organic or choose to mix organic with conventional, keep the following tips in mind: •

Variety – eat a variety of food from a variety of sources to get a better mix of nutrients and reduce your exposure to a single pesticide. Be seasonal – consider the environment and keep it green by consuming fresh produce that’s in season. Savvy reading – just because its organic, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a healthier or lower fat option – some organic food may still be high in sugar, fat or salt. Keep it clean – wash fresh produce under clean running water to remove traces of chemicals, dirt and bacteria. You could opt to peel fruit or vegetables, but that does mean you’ll lose out on some valuable fibre.

any rules? South Africa is currently changing its food labelling laws, but there still aren’t any defining standards for organic food. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries are currently sitting with draft legislation on the issue, but there are around eight independent certification bodies in SA, all contributing to maintaining voluntary organic standards. For more information on organic standards in SA, view the following websites: www.bdoca.co.za and www.afrisco.net

THE MAYO CLINIC offers a chart of some of the key differences between conventional and organic farming methods: CONVENTIONAL

ORGANIC

Use chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.

Use natural fertilizers to feed the soil and plants, like manure or compost.

Use Synthetic insecticides to fight against pests and disease.

Use pesticides from natural sources; employ beneficial insects and birds, and traps or mating disruption to reduce pests and disease.

Weeds are managed with synthetic herbicides.

Environmentally-generated plant-killing compounds, crop rotation, tilling, mulching or hand weeding for weed management.

Animals are given antibiotics and medications to prevent disease, and growth hormones to speed growth.

Animals are fed on organic feed and free access to roam. For disease prevention, rotational grazing, a balanced diet and clean housing are provided.

Gut-wrenching facts Did you know?

Unhealthy bacteria in the intestine can cause weight gain by stimulating greater absorption of calories from fat.1 A permeable intestine can allow allergy-causing molecules and germs to enter the body, sometimes causing infection and worsening autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation and thyroid disease.2 Constipation can cause intestinal blockages that can result in intestinal tissue death, perforation and infection.3

But it’s not all bad news…

Your brain and intestine are connected: Mood boosting neurotransmitters are produced by intestinal cells.4 Healthy bacteria convert some soluble fibres into molecules called short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which protect your heart and help maintain healthy blood pressure.5,6

Protocol for a healthy intestine, which promotes a healthy body and good mood too: Reduce unhealthy bacteria and boost beneficial bacteria: Probiotic –Maximum Potency contains 16 billion beneficial probiotic bacteria per daily dose. It has four species of probiotics (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, Bacillus coagulans and Saccharomyces) to prevent unhealthy bacterial and yeast overgrowth, and to boost health by protecting both the small and large intestine.7 It also contains added enzymes for improved digestion. Take 1 capsule twice daily. Boost heart-protective SCFAs and promote regular digestion: Invisible Fibre™ Pure 100% soluble vegetable fibre to soften stools and promote regular bowel movements. This unique fibre is also a prebiotic, which means that beneficial bacteria convert it into SCFAs for healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health.5,6 Invisible Fibre™ powder can be stirred into any drink or added to most food on a daily basis. Suitable for baking, freezing, or add to hot or cold liquids, yogurts, cereals and desserts. Treat constipation: Natural Laxative Constipation is common, affecting up to 20% of adults (50% of the elderly).8 Natural Laxative is made from the Aloe ferox plant, which means it has antioxidant benefits in addition to its constipation relieving effects.9 Take 1-2 tablets daily when needed. Heal and protect: Curcumin and Glutamine Curcumin, an extract from turmeric spice, and glutamine, a natural amino acid, help protect and heal the intestine’s cells.10,11 Curcumin also helps prevent intestinal inflammation and it may help protect the intestine from carcinogens.11 Dissolve 1 teaspoon of Glutamine into a glass of water daily (can be added to Invisible Fibre™ if desired) and take 1 Curcumin capsule twice daily.

Never ignore signs of pain - this is your body’s way of telling you something’s wrong

SMOOTHE MOVES

Creaking, stiff and sore joints aren’t just reserved for the aged and infirm. Get your joints in youthful shape by taking care of them, and yourself, learn how to prevent arthritis and reduce pain.

did you know? Tai Chi is a gentle and non strenuous form of exercise that’s been proven to significantly improve body strength and core muscle strength, balance and flexibility. In fact, studies have shown it’s a highly effective treatment for arthritis and for increasing bone density. It’s also great for heart health and high blood pressure.

O

UCH! The causes of joint pain are varied, but can be an injury or disease that affects your ligaments, tendons or bursae (sac filled with fluid usually found in areas subjected to friction) surrounding your joints, as well as cartilage, bones and ligaments inside your joints. Joint inflammation, like arthritis, is also a cause of pain.

(more common) your body has problems removing it. Commonly, gout pain is sudden and is seen in hot, red, swollen joints, most commonly in the big toe. Gout can lead to inflammatory arthritis as the build up of uric acid crystal can damage the joints over time. It’s the most common cause of arthritis in men over 40.

Some of the major causes of joint pain are:

Classified as a rheumatoid disease, there are over 100 types of arthritis. These range from wear and tear of cartilage (like osteoarthritis, which has been linked to obesity – the joints take a lot of strain because of excess weight), to inflammation as a result of an overactive immune system (rheumatoid arthritis). Lifestyle & Diet

Foods recommended to assist gout are foods low in purines like rice, millet, corn, cherries, berries, eggs, nuts, cereals (except oats). Also include pineapple, ginger, dhania, chilli & peppers, tumeric and lemons. It is very important to increase daily servings of raw vegetables, fruits and their juices. Especially good foods are celery, broccoli, strawberries, cherries, blueberries and bananas to help cleanse the body and neutralise uric acid levels. Avoid alcohol, sugars, caffeine and refined and processed foods.

Repetitive Strain

Doing the same action over and over again can cause repetitive strain injuries and this can negatively affect your joints permanently, leading to osteoarthritis. Omega-3s are absolutely

Organically Connected By Glenn-Douglas Haig One of the most common things that rob our happiness is the idea we are alone separate from our fellow human beings. This is a direct result of the rational, empirical way of thinking we inherited from the age of reason, where science became the only acceptable vehicle for discovering truth. We based our understanding of truth on what we could measure, see, touch and witness. So obviously we ‘saw’ our bodies as being separate from each other, we ‘experienced’ our feelings and thoughts as unique to us. How often have you thought you are the only person in the world who feels or thinks the way you do? The good news is that science, and more specifically quantum physics, has finally caught up with what authentic spiritual truths have advocated for centuries: that each and every one of us is part of a larger organism called humankind. We are like individual cells of a living being… cells that share molecules and communicate an unimaginable amount of information instantaneously: that’s what ‘organic’ means: a living organism. Science has now proven; not only are we connected, but we are literally sharing our molecules with the people around us, every second of the day. Our molecules ‘flicker’ in and out of existence, and they can flick into being in my body, then yours and back into mine, faster than the speed of light. This is an extraordinary truth that is still not in our schools… our kids are being taught physics that is 300 years old! The deeper truth is that we not only share our very molecules, but that our feelings, emotions, wisdom and even knowledge are shared continuously through what Jung called ‘The Collective Unconscious’, and what physicists call the morphogenetic field. So what? This means that every thought, feeling, emotion, opinion and idea you hold, is being fed into the bigger organism of humanity. You can’t help it, it just happens. Your ability to influence the entire human organism is now a scientific fact! You are not alone. Live your life as organically as you can, in thought, word and deed and you will be a powerful contributor to the wellbeing of humankind.

UPSTAGING RICE

Make incredibly yummy food from vegetables and raw ingredients.

N

atalie Reid and Noel Martin have co-authored Easy Living Food with over 200 raw recipes designed for great taste. I was intrigued by the ‘veggie rice’ page with 4 variations of rice – all raw of course and none of them actually using rice. Take a page from their book and see how delicious you can make your raw food. We did and here it is:

VEGGIE RICE After eating this vegetable ‘rice’, you will wonder why you ever bothered to cook rice before. Nutty, zesty and creamy, this works well as an accompaniment to most meals. Cauliflower is our favourite, but you can also use parsnip, turnip, daikon radish and sweet potato. A mix of these with cauliflower works best. If you don’t have a food processor, but do have good knife skills, go for it!

SIMPLE ‘RICE’ 10 min prep • • • • •

500g hard white vegetables, cleaned and roughly chopped 1 C macadamia or cashew nuts 3 T lemon or lime juice 2 T seed, nut or olive oil 1 t salt

*Add everything to the food processor with S-blade *Process until it has a couscous-like consistency

JAZZ UP YOUR SIMPLE RICE BY ADDING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SPICY COCONUT ‘RICE’ Wrap this rice up in leaf rolls for a special variation. Make the simple rice and stir in chopped young coconut flesh, minced fresh chilli and garlic, julienned peppers or other vegetables and piles of fresh coriander.

BREYANI Give it an Indian flair with your favourite curry paste, soaked raisins, peas, sprouts, chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder.

SPANISH RICE Turn your rice into a full meal by adding paprika, olive oil, sprouts, chopped tomatoes, cucumber, celery sliced thinly, pitted olives and shredded fresh herbs. Ayurveda for you Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that means “the science of life and longevity”. CURING A COLD Ayurvedically speaking, colds are a kaphavata disorder. The body builds up an excess of cool and moist kapha qualities, resulting in congestion and a runny nose, and at the same time it may suffer from excess vata, leading to chills, loss of appetite, and poor digestion. Strictly avoid dairy products, including yoghurt, cheese, milk, and ice cream, until your congestion clears up. Vasaka is well known in Ayurveda as a treatment for respiratory ailments, particularly as an expectorant in bronchitis. This herb is used extensively for treating colds, cough and asthma. Guduchi is the most valued herb in the Ayurvedic pharmacy. A growing number of studies support its role as a potent herb that increases the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety, and illness. Guggulu is one of Ayurveda’s strongest purifying herbs, used for thousands of years to clear the sinuses. It is especially helpful for stabilizing vata and kapha imbalances.

HOME REMEDY

W

inter is upon us and as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, we are bound to develop a case of the winter blues. While we can’t control the weather, we can control certain factors such as the food we eat and the herbs we ingest, which either build our health and resistance to illness or wear us down. Traditionally, Ayurveda advises that everyone should follow ritucharya (seasonal routine) to preserve balance as the seasons change. Winter is generally a season of kapha dosha. The sky is cloudy, and the weather is cold, damp and heavy. The qualities of kapha include heavy, slow, cool, damp, smooth, static and viscous. Kapha individuals display these qualities in various ways. So, a kapha-pacifying routine should be adopted especially by kapha individuals.

Certain vata dosha provoking qualities such as dry, cold, windy and clear are also often prominent on winter days, so vata individuals should keep this in mind. Vata is dry, light, cold, clear, mobile and dispersing. In this case, a vatapacifying routine should be adopted.

WHAT TO EAT Incorporate steamed vegetables, warm soup cooked with ghee (clarified butter), and spicy food into your meals. As appetite tends to increase in winter, eat more protein - beans, tofu, and eggs - and if you’re not a vegetarian, chicken and fish. Add warming spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper to promote digestion. Avoid cold drinks (they aggravate kapha and vata) and opt for hot water, hot tea, and occasionally, hot chocolate.

Ginger is the best home remedy for colds. It is a powerful cleansing herb that mobilizes toxins and restores balance to the body. It also benefits the digestive system. In a litre of water, add 2 teaspoons of grated ginger, a handful of holy basil leaves, bring to a vigorous boil, strain and drink this warm decoction throughout the day. You may also add honey to your cup for sweetening and added antiseptic properties.

KEEP WARM Cover your ears and neck to keep vata and kapha in check. Avoid cold drafts, wear warm clothes, and don’t forget to wear a hat outside. Grandma was right when she said more than half of the body’s heat is lost through the head.

“Ayurveda aims to achieve health by working towards balance and harmony, not by fighting disease.”

Always follow the diet that pacifies your major dosha, i.e. Vata, Pitta, Kapha, or the one specified by an Ayurvedic doctor, with the necessary variations to blend into the season.

Motivate yourself to care for the earth by looking at the wonder and mystery of our planetary existence.

T

he mysteries of the planet are so much more than we know. Mark Ward, author of Universality (Macmillan) explains how complex structures grow, emerge and sustain the hidden rhythm to the run of our lives.

At every level from the cellular through the cerebral to the continental and cosmic the same rhythm is pulsing and each pattern, pulse and formation in nature has one explanation, almost like there is an identifiable sequence of events behind everything - a predictive nature.

“From the order in a flock of birds, veins in a hand, branches in tree, we find similar structures,” says Ward. everything you need to live life well

YOUR ACTIONS COUNT ENORMOUSLY

Every action has a reaction and that extends to what we do on a daily basis by way of our effect on the environment. Reduce your ecological footprint and increase nature’s spread by being more aware of the ripples you set up each waking moment.

It’s certainly trendy to be green at the moment – and green products abound. But how do you practically integrate them all into your life without compromising the must-have convenience of modern day living? Well, the first point in living a green life is that you really shouldn’t rush out and buy anything at all. Use what you have and only replace items when there’s a real need. Green is more than using products;

livewell green living

it’s also about making full use of what you already have and reducing waste. Living a life that takes our beautiful world and the environment into consideration isn’t as difficult as you might think. It’s not necessary (and not green) to unilaterally throw away everything you think may pose a danger to the environment (like plastic containers). Recycling and upcycling are both ways to ensure your wastage is kept to a minimum. There are numerous recycling bins set up around the country, but be a responsible recycler: wash any meat packaging before putting it in the bins (blood-soaked packaging attracts bacteria, flies and creates odours); be sure to separate plastic and paper (remove staples too); and remove paper labels from glass containers (or keep your glass containers where possible).

PLASTIC Reduce your impact on landfill by recycling plastic bags and buying upsized packaged products (more stuff inside, less packaging outside). If you’re going out to eat and know you won’t finish your meal – take your own take-out packaging. Seriously, you’re not going to look like a crazy person if you bring your own Tupperware – you can proudly brandish your environmentally friendly action. Instead of buying foil or plastic wrap each month, invest in good quality glass containers to store leftover food – glass is recyclable, lasts forever (if it’s not broken) and isn’t toxic.

SWITCH TO SWITCHING OFF

Eskom’s been telling us for a long time now that just switching off lights and appliances when they’re not in use saves energy. It certainly helps save on energy bills. Here are some other easy tips to reduce your energy consumption: •

LET NATURE DO IT If you have unwanted rodents scurrying around, don’t reach for dreaded, toxic rat killer. Not only will you experience the awfulness of rodent corpses in sneaky crevices, you could also be killing off the local owl population. The hauntingly beautiful birds are brilliant rat catchers, but are being killed off by poison-infected rats. Rather integrate a breeding pair of owls into your area for a rodent-free and much more peaceful existence (build an owl house in your garden to lure these exquisite rat-catchers, or contact Owl’s House on 021 852 4421).

SPOTTED AT THE WELLCAFE: Well done to the person spotted at the WellCafe who brought along her own flask to get a take-away coffee. That means one less disposable cup in our landfill.

Hot plates retain heat, switch yours off before you’re finished cooking. Only boil the amount of water you need in your kettle to avoid extra electricity usage boiling excess water. Use a thermostatcontrolled iron and iron all your washing at once – the average iron uses the same amount of electricity as ten 100 watt bulbs. Check the seal on your fridge – a damaged seal lets cold air escape, making your fridge use more energy to moderate internal temperature. Wrap your water heater in an insulating blanket – you’ll use far less electricity this way – also consider converting to solar or a heat pump.

TIPS

Clean with Green

Most people are unaware that lurking right in their own pantry is an array of natural cleaning ingredients both effective and non-harmful. These include simple ingredients like white vinegar, tea tree oil and lemons. Vinegar is a powerful antifungal and germ-killing liquid. Tea tree essential oil is anti-bacterial and anti-viral and lemons are odour destroyers, disinfectant agents and always leave the house smelling fresh and clean. Mix the three of these together and you have an effective natural tile, bath, countertop and shower cleaning agents. Here is an easy DIY homemade recipe:

ALL PURPOSE CLEANER • • • • • •

1/2 cup white vinegar Juice of 1 lemon 2 cups warm water 25-30 drops of essential oil (Tea Tree, Grapefruit, or Eucalyptus) 24 oz spray bottle Label

Mix vinegar and lemon in a large bowl or measuring cup. Slowly add the water and stir. Allow it to cool, then add the essential oil. Using a funnel pour it into a recycled spray bottle. Create your own label. Most importantly, have fun with the process and clean knowing you are protecting your family, pets, plants and aquatic lifein a completely natural way.

TRULY NATURAL MEDICINE Aloe Vera, a prolific plant found all over the world has so many health properties, from tumour reduction to blood-sugar regulating; it’s hard to list them all. Suffice to say, you can forgo chemically enhanced face creams and grow your own in your garden. Aloes are hardy as well, so you don’t necessarily need a green thumb to coax them out the earth. For great skin hydration and rejuvenation, rub raw aloe gel (that’s the sticky stuff inside the leaf) on your face, and slip some in your smoothie maker for an inflammatory boost. Aloe also makes a fantastic medical kit – swap plastic-wrapped, foil-contained creams and plasters for aloe which can be used for cuts and scrapes, burns, sprains, insect bites, sunburn and bruises.

BICARB ESSENTIAL From deodorant to cleaning products, bicarbonate of soda is incredibly versatile. It’s a great tooth whitener and antibacterial agent (using this as a toothpaste means you aren’t at risk of ingesting fluoride). It’s also got an anti-inflammatory function, so can be used on insect bites and stings, and

is great for nappy rash. But, you can also use it as a cleaning agent – mix with vinegar for a brilliantly clean loo, or add to your ecowashing powder to make the powder last longer. Vinegar is also a cleaning essential – instead of window cleaner, use one part vinegar to one part water and rub onto windows with used newspaper.

A BUM DEAL Disposable nappies are certainly convenient. But, billions of them are stuffed into landfills every year. And it’s not just a landfill space problem, urine and faeces soaked into these nappies can leach into soil and water, carrying diseases and contaminants from vaccines. Revert back to cloth nappies that can be washed and re-used, or go for biodegradable disposable nappies and be sure to rinse them before throwing them away.

MEATY ISSUES For some time now, there’s been a campaign for Meatless Monday’s. If you’re a meat eater, cut out meat for just one day a week. The impact on the environment (and your health) is incredible. The meat

industry contributes to almost a fifth of all green-house gasses (that’s more than transportation) and about 6,800 litres of water are used to make just 500 grams of beef (far more than vegetable cultivation).

PAPER CUTS If you’re a book or magazine junkie, consider pooling your reading matter by sharing with friends and like-minded people. Be aware of the impact of deforestation (although most of South Africa’s paper industry uses sustainable forests) and the production of paper and ink and make a difference by recycling paper (use both sides of paper to print and copy), send electronic greeting cards or letters, and buy recycled paper whenever you can for printing, business cards and the like.

WEAR IT WELL While it’s tempting to up your wardrobe choices with impossibly cheap imported offerings, rather opt for locally produced natural fibres. Buy well and your clothes will last much longer – or upcycle clothes you’re tired of by introducing something raided from Gran’s old trunk.

LOVE THEM BACK Y

our pets are an integral part of your life and it’s been shown that pet ownership is good for your mental health. All the love and attention they lavish on you should be rewarded with reciprocal love and care. Because they can’t really tell you how they’re feeling, it’s important to take a preventative approach to their health and wellbeing by ensuring you give them the very best nutrition possible. You may think you’re showing love by offering up morsels from your own dinner plate, but animals have very different nutrition needs than humans – for a start, they need a lot more protein than we do, but also require essential minerals and vitamins to keep them vital.

100% complete and balanced diet ensuring a healthier and longer life for your pets. Scientifically formulated by a professional animal nutritionist.

Although cats aren’t too keen on eating vegetables, dogs aren’t as fussy and in fact need a few to keep their nutritional balances in check. Ensure your pet is given a balance of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium and omega-6.And, don’t forget the all important need for fresh water to ensure good hydration and help with digestion.

HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO DO THE VERY BEST YOU CAN FOR YOUR PET: Small dogs that aren’t that active only need to consume between 187 and 350 calories per day. Larger dogs need 1,000 to 2,000 calories, depending on how active they are. A healthy 4 kilogram cat really only needs 220 to 350 calories a day, which is really quite little considering it’s about the same as a few slices of cheese.

MAKE THE SWITCH Remove all your conventional cleaning products with harmful chemicals and switch to green friendly options. Many people are reluctant to make the change because natural packaged options tend to be more expensive. You can think of it as a tax towards preserving the earth, and you can also make it cost you less by mixing your washing powder with bicarbonate of soda or eliminating certain products and using pantry alternatives instead. For example, leave out window cleaner and use vinegar diluted with water. Do some clever budgeting and make the natural alternatives part of your household expenses. It’s also beneficial to your health. WELLNESS OWN BRAND CLEANING RANGE

When you breathe properly with long deep inhalations and exhalations at the same time as lengthening your spine you will improve your posture and lift your mood.

STANDING did you know?

Improving your posture can add up to five centimetres to your standing height. 40

Improving your posture can add height, make you look slimmer, give you a flatter belly and full chest. Breathe in and start right away.

G

enerally we spend too much of our lives sitting. This contributes to weak abdominal muscles and tight hamstrings causing us to slouch and over time develop bad postural habits. Performing a few basic exercises as often as possible will rectify bad posture, transform the way you carry yourself and make you feel better. Stretches combined with exercises that target the spine, abdomen, hips and legs will get you there.

everything you need to live life well

TIGHTEN UPPER ARMS

movewell

fitness, sleep & massage

The goal is to stretch tight areas like the chest and hamstrings and strengthen weak areas like the upper back and abdominals. Start off by lengthening your stance. Begin with the feet: point them straight ahead, rather than out to the sides or inward. Make sure the knees are in line with your second and third toes, and also pointing straight ahead. Proper hip posture requires a neutral position, not slanted to the left or right. Lengthen your spine - imagine putting space between the vertebrae. Shoulders should float down your body. Most of us tend to round the shoulders from desk and computer work, work at relaxing them down the body. The head should be neutral with chin slightly tucked. Good posture is not only about standing up straight when stationary but having the right alignment when in motion. Over time repetitive bad habits while moving can cause undue stress on joints and muscles and contribute to injuries.

RELEASE SHOULDER TENSION This exercise is meant to be done daily and will improve your posture by releasing shoulder tension and opening up the chest. 1. Lie on a mat with your knees bent and hands cupping the base of your skull. 2. Keep your shoulder blades and ribs connected to the mat and gently press your elbows down towards the floor feeling a pull across the front of the chest and under the armpits. 3. Release the elbows and then repeat 5-8 times until you feel your muscles releasing tension.

TIP INCREASE THE INTENSITY BY PUTTING A ROLLED UP TOWEL UNDER YOUR UPPER BACK. THIS WILL GIVE YOUR CHEST AN EXTRA OPENING.

TIGHTEN UPPER ARMS Throwing on your favourite tee is disconcerting when you notice your arms have suddenly lost their muscle tone and look flabby and soft. Resolve to tighten them up with a combination of cardio, weight training and healthy food choices. The size of your arms depends on both body type and how much excess fat you have. Building muscle will help 'burn' away the fat but this requires exercising. Changing your food choices and quantity will significantly contribute to the result. Noeleen Bridle, a Cape Town based personal trainer and health and fitness mentor, runs programmes that educate and help people to reach a new level of health and well-being. Here are some of Noeleen’s expert home tips on how to work your arms.

DIPS Find a sturdy low table, place your butt on the edge, with hands placed firmly beside you fingers pointing to the ground in an easy to grip position. Place your feet slightly apart, lift your buttock off the table and bend the elbows, let your body dip by bending your arms - then push them straight up again. Make sure you use your arms to hoist you up rather than your leg strength. Repeat 20 times

KICKBACKS Grab two tins of food or light dumbbells, check your position in front of a mirror, feet slightly apart and legs bent, stick buttocks out as far back as you can and make your back resemble a table top (keep it straight at all times). With elbows close to the sides of your body, bend your arms in towards your chest then straighten them completely behind you. Keep them hugged in towards your body. Repeat 20 times.

TRICEP OVERHEAD EXTENSIONS Stand with knees slightly bent, grab your weight or food can and stretch one arm straight above your head. Bend the other arm and put your palm on the back of your head to support it. Bring your lifted arm down until your elbow comes into your waist. Stretch it up again and repeat. Repeat 20 times on each arm.

BABY PRESS UPS Lie flat on the floor on your stomach, cross your feet behind you, place your arms on either side of your chest. Push your body up until your arms are straight and only your knees are touching the floor. Bend the arms allowing your straight body to lower to the floor and then push up again. Repeat this up and down action 20 times. For maximum impact, do these exercises after half an hour of 'fat burning' or cardio exercises like fast walking, jogging or cycling. Repeat this arm routine at least 4 to 10 times. For a well rounded routine, add some stomach crunches between each of the arm cycles. GET GROUNDED Make your mornings significant by literally ‘getting your feet on the ground’. This entails a brief foot massage at the same time as setting an intention towards making your day unfold with purpose. Before you get out of bed, hold your foot around the ankle with one hand, with the other hold around the toes and ball of the foot circling it a few times in each direction. Then massage the underneath of the foot from top to bottom pressing as many points as you can. After that, hold the ankle with one hand and put the fingers of the other hand between each of your toes loosening all the joints. Lastly pick up the foot and cradle from the knee to the toes as you would cradle a baby, this will open and loosen your hips. Repeat with the other foot. You will have a grounded and purposeful day. Breast milk is a perfect combination of nutrients, uniquely designed for your baby.

Best for baby Breast feeding isn’t just the very best nature can offer for your baby, it’s also good for you – assisting in weight loss, reducing breast and ovarian cancer risk and further concreting the mom-baby bond.

did you know? Added to the surge of the cuddle hormone oxytocin that happens when you breastfeed, feeding can also make you feel really drowsy. Take advantage of this to have a quick power nap with your little darling to keep your energy stores intact.

here’s something so incredibly beautiful about breast feeding – it’s an act of complete nurture and gives you the opportunity to more fully bond with your child emotionally. There’s been a link between this intimate bonding and mental development, too.

IMMUNITY

Gut health is one of the foremost subjects when reviewing overall health – and your baby is no different. Breast milk contains unique sugar molecules called oligosaccharides that aren’t digested, but positively affect your baby’s gut health, ensuring good bacteria stays and bad bacteria goes. This builds the immune system and staves off infection. What’s more, one of the main immune protection factors is immunoglobulin A (IgA), highly present in the first milk your body produces (colostrum). IgA forms a protective layer on the mucous membranes of your baby’s nose, throat and intestine, reducing infection risk. Breast feeding has also been linked to a reduced risk later in life for diseases like diabetes (types 1 and 2), inflammatory bowel disease and high cholesterol, as well as food allergies.

OBESITY

There’s a worldwide obesity epidemic and researchers have found that breast fed babies are less likely to succumb. The reasons are: •

Breast feeding helps children to eat until their hunger is satisfied, as opposed to eating until the food source is finished. There’s less insulin (which stimulates fat creation) in breast milk than in formula. Leptin levels are higher in breast fed babies and this hormone is linked to regulating fat and appetite. Weight gain in formula fed babies is quite rapid in the first few weeks of life and this is associated with obesity later on.

BACK-UP SUPPLY

Just because you’ve decided to breast feed, it doesn’t mean you have to be constantly available – storing your breast milk is totally viable. It’s preferable to use glass containers and they’re much easier to keep clean and won’t contain any environmental toxins such as BPAs that could leech into your life-giving milk. Make sure the container can be sealed well and don’t express much more than your baby will eat at one sitting to avoid wastage. Use waterproof labels to mark the date and time you expressed the milk to make sure your baby is always getting the freshest possible. Expressed breast milk can last for six hours at room temperature; a day in an insulated cooler box; five to eight days in the fridge (but don’t store in the door, rather put it at the back of the fridge); and can be frozen for up to six months (scientists say, though, that some of the immune-boosting power will be lost with extended freezing).

did you know? Breast milk changes during the feeding session – the first milk is quite watery, to address thirst and electrolyte balance, but then gets thicker and fattier for energy stores. Your milk also changes throughout the day, with more sedating effects at night.

IF YOU CAN’T

There are various reasons why you may not be able to breast feed. Perhaps your body simply isn’t producing enough milk, or you’ve had surgery that’s damaged your milk ducts. There are numerous formula options on the market, including specialised mixes for lactose-intolerance or pre-term babies. If you’re struggling to breast feed, don’t feel bad – the most important thing is to ensure your baby is getting the right nutrients in the right quantities. Speak to your paediatrician about the best option and discuss pre- and probiotic options.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

IT’S ALL THERE Breast milk is a perfect combination of nutrients, uniquely designed for your baby. PROTEINS • Lactoferrin inhibits growth of irondependant bacteria. • Secretory IgA protects against viruses and bacteria, including E.coli and allergies. If you eat fish, you can increase the amount of these proteins in your breast milk. • Lysozyme is an enzyme that protects against E.Coli and salmonella and promotes healthy gut bacteria growth. It also has an anti-inflammatory function. • Bifidus helps lactobacillus grow and this creates an acidic environment that stops the growth of harmful bacteria. FATS Long chain fatty acids are deposited in the brain during the last trimester of pregnancy and are also found in breast milk. They are required for healthy brain, nervous system and retina development. VITAMINS Your breast milk vitamin content is a direct result of your own vitamin intake. Fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K are vital to your baby’s health; so are water-soluble vitamins like C, riboflavin, niacin and panthothenic acid. CARBS Around 40% of the calories in breast milk are made up of lactose, which aids the absorption of phosphorous, magnesium and calcium, and decreases unhealthy bacteria in the stomach.

THE ETIQUETTE OF BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC One of the many benefits of breastfeeding is that it’s literally on tap – a convenient and complete source of nutrition for your baby. It enables you to be completely mobile (albeit slightly bogged down with the ubiquitous baby bag filled to the brim with nappies and changes of clothes). But, what’s the polite thing to do? At a restaurant, do you just whip out your breast and act like the mother of all earth mothers, staring down any stranger’s who may take offence? Or are there ways to keep everyone’s dignity intact while you nurture your precious bundle? While you and your partner may find your breasts acceptable and even irresistible, not everyone feels the same way, so it’s best to follow a few simple rules if you’re out and about: •

Dress for the breast – make sure you wear clothes that allow easy access, stick to loose clothing that can slip off or open easily. There are nursing clothes available that are fortified with blush-busting straps and buttons.

Wrap or sling – carry a beautiful scarf or wrap around with you to cover up if necessary, or make use of a baby sling that can be extended to hide your bare breast.

Be a spy – if you’re pregnant right now and plan to breastfeed, take time to watch what other mom’s do and the reactions of people around them – this will help you to get a good idea of how to handle the process and give you a feel of how people in your area react to the practise.

The key point is to be cognisant of your surroundings and aware that some people may feel uncomfortable at the sight of a bare breast. Many public places offer quiet spaces for breastfeeding, and if you’re at a private home and feel the need for privacy, simply ask your host for the use of a quiet space.

Detection and prevention is better than cure

It takes years for most cancers to develop to the stage that they can be detected with mammogram or ultrasound ( dense enough for location and biopsy) so Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is ideally placed as a screening tool to identify changes over time in the ‘early’ development stages, before there is more advanced pathology that can be detected with other tests.

“DITI is especially appropriate for younger women between 30 & 50” Canadian researchers recently found that infrared imaging of breast cancers could detect minute temperature variations related to blood flow and demonstrate abnormal patterns associated with the progression of tumors. These images or thermograms of the breast were positive for 83% of breast cancers compared to 61% for clinical breast examination alone and 84% for mammography. Early detection is aimed at prevention and if early changes are detected then you have an opportunity to intervene and change the outcome. The earlier an abnormality is detected the better the treatment option wil be, resulting in a better outcome. It is in this role that thermography provides its most practical benefit to the general public and to the medical profession. It is certainly an adjunct to the appropriate usage of mammography and not a competitor. In fact, thermography has the ability to identify patients at the highest risk and actually increase the effective usage of mammographic imaging procedures. Until such time as a cure has been found for this terrible disease, progress must be made in the fields of early detection and risk evaluation coupled with sound clinical decision making. Thermography, with its non-radiation, non-contact and low-cost basis has been clearly demonstrated to be a valuable and safe early risk marker of breast pathology, and an excellent case management tool for the ongoing monitoring and treatment of breast disease when used under carefully controlled clinical protocols. When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected. DITI is especially appropriate for younger women between 30 & 50 whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions. This test can provide a ‘clinical marker’ to the doctor or mammographer that a specific area of the breast needs particularly close examination.

product guide

LOVE AT FIRST BITE Set your precious one up for life by introducing ripe fruits and vegetables at the very beginning (good habits integrated early have positive life-long effects). Sweet potatoes, carrots, avo’s, bananas and pears are healthy, full of important nutrients and not likely to trigger allergies. The general rule of thumb for introducing tots to solids is around 6 months. Some are ready sooner than others but it’s important not to rush this delicate stage of development (researchers contend that a too-soon introduction to solids is a compounding factor in the obesity epidemic). Moms know their babies, so you’ll recognise when the time is right: if your darling is able to hold her head up steadily and shows an active interest in the food you eat, it might be time. Tasty meal-time treats for your tot needn’t be a daunting task. Some fruits, like bananas, avo’s and pears, don’t require cooking provided they’re ripe. A brief mashing with a fork is all that’s needed for instant, home-made baby food. Gently steamed carrots and sweet potatoes have a natural sweetness most babies love. Add the superpower of broccoli to expand your little one’s taste buds and get her ready for stronger flavoured foods.

HAT’S GOING ON IN THERE?

Your body is intricately designed to manage infection and injury; and inflammation is one of the ways it does this. But inflammation is meant to be a short term response, releasing immune cells to fight off infection and heal trauma. When this response doesn’t turn off for some reason, immune cells can remain in the system and begin to fight healthy actions like cell rejuvenation. This has a negative effect on your skin.

Smoking is just about the worst thing you can do for your skin. Not only are cigarettes filled with toxins that wreak havoc inside your body, exposure to the smoke also has a ravaging affect on your skin externally. For you skin’s sake (and every other aspect of your health), make a plan to quit.

There are numerous possible internal causes of inflammation. These range from stress and hormonal imbalances to additives and artificial sweeteners, lack of exercise, food intolerance and allergy as well as a high sugar diet.

Eating too much sugar or highglycaemic food can lead to sugar molecules in your blood bonding to protein in your DNA. Over time, this process can affect collagen proteins by changing their flexibility or elasticity and shape.

External causes of inflammation include sun exposure, yeast or bacterial infections, pollution, smoking and some chemicals found in personal care products. All of these weaken collagen, clog pores and dilate your surface blood capillaries. This manifests as uneven skin tone, outbreaks, wrinkles and premature aging.

SKIN SNACKS

did you know?

What you put into your body has a profound effect on your health and that includes your skin health. Unfortunately there are many toxins to be found in ordinary food in today’s world – from pesticides to bacteria. Make healthy food choices by going for fresh as much as possible, and choose organic whenever you can to lessen your exposure to unwanted toxins. Avoid inflammatory food like sugar, refined flour and highly processed food. Include food high in omega-3 fatty acids like oily fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and hemp oil. Supplementing with probiotics is also a good way to protect your skin from the inside – your gut contains healthy bacteria essential for the effective digestion and because of the environment we live in, this delicate balance can easily be disrupted.

Almonds - Are high in vitamin E and healthy fats. Snack on them alone or mix with yoghurt and berries for an antioxidant boost. Apricots - Juicily filled with skin cell promoting vitamin A are also a good source of fibre (needed for a healthy gut) and their nutrients are heart and eye protective as well. Chickpeas - Are a great source of protein, which is a building block for healthy skin. They’re also a versatile snack food, as you can eat them raw (soaked) in a salad, roasted or puréed into a dip. Oranges - Have a high vitamin C content, which is known to be skin protective, promoting collagen production. Coming up to winter, oranges will be available in abundance, get good doses of freshly squeezed and you’ll also be protecting yourself against colds and flu. Green Tea - Is highly antioxidant – brew it up as a delicious iced tea with mint and lemon, or drink hot for warm comfort. Brazil Nuts - Are high in selenium which protects your skin from sun damage. Snack on them raw, or crush into a nutrient-rich smoothie for your morning boost. Whole Grain - If you need to eat bread, choose whole grain only – niacin in whole grains helps inhibit inflammation.

TIP SUPPLEMENT TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE FEEDING YOUR SKIN WITH THE RIGHT STUFF. HERE’S A LIST OF THE TOP FIVE NUTRIENTS YOU NEED FOR HEALTHY SKIN: SILICA, ZINC, OMEGA-3S, SELENIUM, VITAMINS. SUPPLEMENTING WITH VITAMIN A NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH CAUTION, AS IT CAN BE HARMFUL WHEN TAKEN IN EXCESS. BETA CAROTENE IS A PRECURSOR TO VITAMIN A, SO YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER SUPPLEMENTING WITH THAT INSTEAD.

By boosting your body’s ability to eradicate free radicals, you can counteract the negative inflammatory response. Skin boosting antioxidants include vitamins C and E, Coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, DMAE, cartenoids (these are phytonutrients found in red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables), bioflavanoids (from red wine and green tea)

CHECK YOUR BRAND If you are uncertain as to which skincare brand to use log on to www.weg.org/ skindeep and you will find a list of companies that have unsafe ingredients in their products.

Skin facts

Things can get a little confusing, when it comes to skin and ingredients.

Y

our skin is your largest organ and plays a pivotal role in your overall health. But how far must you go in terms of being organic and how harmful are the complicated sounding names you see on your packaging? We look at some of the facts and get to grips with ingredients.

CHEMICALS ARE ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN Cosmetic companies might claim we don’t need to worry about harmful chemicals in products because they are used on our skin and hair and not absorbed into the body. This is not true though as a recent study found parabens in human breast cancer tissue, raising obvious questions about the capability of parabens to accumulate in our bodies. The skin is able to protect itself to an extent, but if it is subjected to chemicals on a daily basis (most people use at least one personal care product every day), this protective ability can be compromised.

Parabens These are chemical preservatives that have been identified as estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. Estrogenic chemicals mimic the function of the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. Exposure to external estrogens has been

54

shown to increase the risk of breast cancer. The most popular parabens to look for are: methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl parabens.

Phthalates Phthalates are used to make plastic more elastic, and are a common ingredient in skin products - the main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. These have been linked to reproductive and developmental problems. Phthalates are even found in baby lotions. Phthalates are under study as a case for causing birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments. They are known to be hormone mimicking chemicals, many of which disrupt the normal hormonal process and are raising concern in their implications for increased breast cancer risk. In September 2000, scientists from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found phthalates at surprisingly high levels in every 289 people that were tested, especially women of reproductive age. The authors concluded that ‘from a public health perspective, these data provide evidence everything you need to live life well

that phthalate exposure is both higher and more common than previously suspected’.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) This is a common chemical found in shampoos, hair conditioners, toothpaste, body washes, bubble baths and skin care products. SLS started its career as a strong, harsh detergent used in industry as a degreaser and a powerful floor cleaner. Ninety percent of all commercial soap and shampoos use sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and this can be retained in tissues for up to five days even after exposure to a tiny amount. When applied to the skin it has the effect of stripping off the oil layer and then irritating and eroding the skin, leaving it rough and pitted – it has the ability to break down proteins in your skin cells, damaging them and undermining their ability to heal adequately. Studies have shown that sodium lauryl sulphate: • could retard healing and keep children’s eyes from developing properly. • can cause cataracts in adults and delays in healing wounds on the surface of the cornea. • has a low molecular weight and is easily absorbed by the body; it builds up in the heart, liver and brain.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

This month we focus on life coaching, a skill you can turn into a career, or use to enhance your life, be a better parent, friend, become a mentor, assist your business or generally live life in a more effective way with more understanding and insight. We speak to Glenn-Douglas Haig about what life coaching is and what you can do with it once qualified.

LIFE COACHING If you combined the wisdom shared by the world’s top thinkers in human development over the past 80 years - this would include psychologists, behaviourists, educators, philosophers, visionaries et al– and you skimmed the top 5% of the insights, modalities and processes created by these great minds – you would have the raw material for what has become known as Life Coaching. What makes coaching difficult to ‘pin down’ is that it is designed to free us from rigid thinking. Therefore, as a practice, it cannot be confined to a single definition, because it has to be alive and evolve alongside our human evolution – and this can make people feel uncomfortable about it.

58

succeed. Much like an athlete, this process makes the coachee fitter to deal with life in the future. Liken this to being a parent and using coaching skills to empower your child, making them ‘fitter for life’ instead of continuously helping them, which actually makes them less able. InnerLifeSkills®or ILS coaches are uniquely skilled at dealing with the Inner Obstacles that could prevent us from achieving our personal and professional goals, like procrastination or lack of confidence. They are also very skilled at helping people discover their life purpose.

A life coach is someone who is qualified in the art of holding a solution-focused conversation, using powerful, spiral-up questions and processes that help the coachee create something different in their lives, or shift them to where they want to be. They help clarify exactly what you want your life to look like, to plan the best way to make it happen and then to systematically make that dream a reality. A business coach would do the same for businesses.

You could see a coach for a single session, or for a series of sessions over a few months. A typical session would entail a few minutes spent on clarifying exactly what you want to achieve, then exploring ways to achieve this. However, you won’t just create a ‘to do’ list – your coach will use various skills based on a variety of disciplines including positive psychology, neuro-linguistic programming, basic hypnotherapy tools, the ILS motivation matrix and the ILS wisdom well, to unearth your deeper motivation and to access your fully powerful self – way beyond mere discipline – so you are equipped to take appropriate action to ensure positive results.

A coach NEVER offers advice, but is expertly trained to use powerful tools and processes to empower a coachee to

actions towards reaching a particular goal. Sometimes a goal is achieved within the actual session, such as releasing a limiting belief, or finding a practical business solution. South Africa has some very reputable coaching schools, but check which ones are accredited by an international coaching body, such as the International Coaching Federation. The most expensive are not necessarily the best, so research and find which one feels right for you. COMENSA (Coaches and Mentors of South Africa) will have a list of the more reputable training institutions. www.comensa.org.za Most people study coaching to enhance their professional skills. Globally, the manger-coach has become a sought after commodity. It is the fastest growing profession in the world and is worth billions of dollars annually. Starting your own practice is the same as starting any business – it requires dedication, hard work and a year or two to build a good reputation, but is extremely rewarding both personally and financially. Besides, why not make a living making a difference?

POLARITY THERAPY (3-day workshop & 2-yr Polarity Training) “The difference between health and disease lies in the relative freedom and balance of the energetic and physical movement patterns in our mental, emotional and physical fields.” (Franklyn Sills. ‘The Polarity Process) For individual sessions or info on Polarity Therapy 3-day Workshop & 2-Year Polarity Practitioners Training, Contact: Karen Levin 0822163837 / polarityenergy@gmail.com The four aspects of Polarity Therapy, are: Energetic Touch/ bodywork, supported by a set of Polarity Stretching exercises, Energetic nutrition and awareness facilitation, all within the energetic concept. Polarity is based on Dr Randolph Stone’s life’s work as a Chiropractor, Osteopath & Naturopath. Disease, according to Dr Stone, is a process which occurs when the life energy is blocked, or out of balance, and also results from improperly dissipated energy. To overcome these problems Polarity Therapy works within four related aspects. Like the four legs supporting a chair, which keeps the base balanced and strong, so do these aspects work together in maintaining balance in the human body, they areWhen one of the legs of a chair are weak or broken, it disrupts the natural flow of energy, and we fall off the chair! Some bodywork techniques are derived from Osteopathy and Chiropractic, but use minimal mechanical force, relying on the life energy to do the work. All these aspects of Polarity look at the whole person for the purpose of restoring and maintaining a balanced energy flow throughout the body/mind system.

Included in my Fields of Practice are: IMAGO Relationship Therapy focusing on areas such as Marital/Relationship Conflict, Pre-marital Counselling, Newlyweds, Conscious Marriage and Divorce Counselling; Bereavement, Grief and Loss; Living with CANCER Counselling; Emotional Distress and Stress and Anxiety Management; Moms with their Babies; Personal Growth and Development; Death of a Pet; Spiritual Issues.
