Female Brewers of Bucks County
Meet the women behind some of Bucks County’s best brews. They spoke to us about their experiences in the brewing world, their favorite beers and what makes Bucks County’s breweries, well, the best!
Moss Mill Brewing Co.
How did you get your start in brewing?
Cortney Costa , Moss Mill Brewing Co.
Maryana: I am Ukrainian, so I grew up in a culture where everything can be transformed into a fermentable form. My great-grandfather was an amateur wine maker, my dad was an enthusiastic distiller and my aunts and uncles were always experimenting with seasonal ingredients in their amazing, one-of-a-kind concoctions. For me, it has always been just a way of life. Cortney: I started a beer blog years ago as a way to hold myself accountable and try new beers outside of my palate’s comfort zone. I created the blog after visiting Portland, Maine and going on a series of brewery tours around the city. From there I also started home brewing.
What do you enjoy most about brewing? Hannah Gohde, Free Will Brewing Co.
Hannah: Among many other things, I love the physical demands of the brewing process. It is by no means a glamorous job. Most days I look like a troll covered in sticky grain, slimy yeast and who-knows what else! But feeling my muscles shake and my shoulders sore after a particularly hard brew day makes drinking that postshift pint all that more gratifying. Seeing the efforts of myself and the rest of the team come to fruition in a single glass of beer is one of the most rewarding things I think I could experience.
Claudia Confoy, Triumph Brewing Company
Is working at a brewery different than what you thought it would be? Claudia: I had no idea what to expect when I started this job. I remember being surprised by how much engineering and basic plumbing was involved. There’s a lot of tinkering and you need to be able to maintain and construct equipment. All of those days helping my dad with odd jobs around the house have really come in handy! Maryana Ferguson, Great Barn Brewery
What was it like brewing beer for the very first time at Great Barn Brewery?
Moss Mill Brewing Co.
Maryana: My favorite memory would have to be the moment I held a glass of beer from the batch we made from our first harvest. The deep appreciation and joy that comes from being a part of the whole process is indescribable. The wonder I feel when barley seeds go into the ground, grow, get harvested, malted, mashed, fermented and then enjoyed in liquid form can only be compared to the joy of giving birth to my children.
What is it like being a female brewer in a male-dominated industry? Hannah: Women in beer isn’t new. In fact, women were the first brewers. All throughout history, women’s roles have changed and evolved and right now, we’re in the thick of a cultural and societal revolution. In my opinion, the national push for STEM based learning curriculums has been a huge springboard for craft beer.
What is your favorite beer to brew? Cortney: That is a tough question. I feel like mine fluctuates depending on the season, but I’ll go with PA Brut! Free Will Brewing Co.
Claudia: I really enjoy our lagers, especially the Vienna (very malt forward) and our Black Lager (dark like a stout, but light and crisp like a pilsner). Maryana: Our Peanut Butter Chocolate Dunkel Shaun at 6.3% ABV is out of this world delicious! Hannah: The first time I had Free Will I had C.O.B. (coffee.oatmeal.brown) and it was one of those extremely memorable moments where you know that your life was just changed. Fast forward three years, and I can’t even make this up, the first beer that I brewed as a professional brewer, was C.O.B. It was serendipitous, and completely by chance. Life always has a way of coming full circle.
