Support Wellspring on GIVE LOCAL LOUISVILLE DAY, October 1st! James Graham Brown Funds EHR system When the news came in that the James Graham Brown Foundation had awarded a grant to Wellspring, the office lit up with shouts of excitement. “We’ve been working toward procuring an Electronic Health Record system and an overall upgrade of our computer system for the last two years,” says Wellspring CEO Kathy Dobbins. “Now, thanks to the James Graham Brown Foundation, we’re going to be able to move from paper charts to a fully integrated electronic records system. And, the grant will allow us to update Wellspring’s computer system, which will allow greater efficiency and accuracy across the agency.” “But, most important of all,” Dobbins adds “this support assures that those who need us can count on Wellspring being here for them.”

Bernie was a persuasive voice at the state level, advocating for a second adult crisis unit and eventually securing funding for the David J. Block Center. Thanks to his consistent and most effective advancement of mental health awareness, Wellspring no longer has to turn people away. The true extent of Bernie’s character is highlighted by his humility for his achievements and legacy - the world needs more Bernies. We could not be happier to bestow this great honor on our friend and colleague.

Humana Foundation makes life easier for Wellspring clients As part of a grant from the Humana Foundation, Wellspring purchased shopping carts for all our clients. Most of us have the convenience of loading our cars up with shopping bags and driving home, but imagine how difficult it would be to take all those groceries on a bus, or even worse, carry them as you walk all the way home. Thanks to the Humana Foundation, clients can save by reducing the number of trips they make to the grocery store, buy more items when they shop, and choose more fresh, seasonal foods. To help with the project, Takeda Pharmaceutical volunteers and the Governor’s Scholars program, coordinated through Bellarmine, each spent a day at Wellspring assembling and delivering shopping carts to over 100 delighted Wellspring participants. The Journey Program clients actually cheered when the volunteers wheeled in the carts just as they wrapped up a group therapy session. The Governor’s Scholars also helped with a variety of other projects around the building - from landscaping to deep-cleaning the community room, and even recommending improvements to our website and social media plan!

Ardery summer BBQ

Announcing the 2015-2016 Board

Every summer clients and staff alike look forward to the picnics and BBQs hosted at our program sites. This year Ardery House really knocked it out of the park – with a perfect August day, and a bountiful spread of delicious fare, the garden was soon packed. Patrick Rhodes, Director of Programs, manned the grill and kept the food coming. The atmosphere buzzed as live music drifted across the patio. Karaoke, dancing and poetry readings provided a variety of entertainment and we discovered that the Wellspring family is quite a talented bunch!

At the annual meeting Wellspring announced the new Board of Directors. We welcome back some longstanding supporters as well as some new faces, and look forward to their leadership in the coming years. “Ack’s Back!” After sitting out a year, Elmore “Ack” Willets, III has rejoined the Wellspring Board. We are delighted to put the wealth of knowledge his background in corporate product development and marketing built over his career at Brown-Forman to good work here at Wellspring. Curtiss Scott – a New “Asset” for Wellspring. Curtiss Scott, President & CIO of Todd Asset Management has been named to the Wellspring Board of Directors. Curt brings a wealth of skills, a real passion for Wellspring’s mission and will be continuing Todd Asset Management’s long-standing involvement with the agency.

LCFC wELLSPRING NIGHT Wellspring hosted a night at Louisville City Football Club - and what a night it was! We are so thankful to the team for the opportunity to be at the game and raise funds from a percentage of sales. Louisville City won the match against the Richmond Kickers and the fans went wild! If you haven’t been to a match yet, it’s a great night out. We look forward to enjoying more games!

Make a gift to Wellspring on October 1st as part of GIVE LOCAL LOUISVILLE DAY

“wELLSPRING HELPED ME REBUILD MY LIFE!” Bruce was living in the ruins of a cast-off camper; it had no roof - just a tarp to keep the weather out. There was no running water, and no electricity. Finally, living with these difficulties, along with a severe mental illness and substance abuse took their toll and Bruce sought help at Wellspring’s Crisis Stabilization Program. There, he became stable for the first time in a very long time. Feeling some strength at last, Bruce decided to participate in Wellspring’s Supportive Housing Program. “And then it really all came together,” he shares. “With Wellspring’s help, I got some income, medical assistance and an apartment. That’s what helped me finally get sober and feel like I had some control again.” Bruce smiles from ear to ear as he shares his joy of the life he now leads. “Having a job means so much. It’s wonderful to get up and go to work – and to know that what I’m doing at Goodwill is helping others, too. I’ll never be able to thank Wellspring enough for helping me get where I am today.”

Wellspring Wellness Walkers support NAMI

DOnor reflections Donor I first learned about Wellspring because of my husband, John P. Bell’s work in psychiatry. Wellspring was really a pioneer when it got going in the early ‘80s. It was exciting, working with the likes of Bos Todd, Phil Ardery and Barry Bingham, Sr. to see that the needs of people living with mental illness were addressed. It’s amazing to see how the agency has grown since those early years. I don’t think any of us could have envisioned that Wellspring would look like it does today. Wellspring’s done so much good for so many, it’s still a joy to watch and to support. Nancy Bell,

Honorary Lifetime Boardmember
