Philip P. Ardery (1914 - 2012)

“There were days that it was really hard to get up and go, but my parents, peers and Wellspring staff really pushed me to keep going.” he admitted, adding that his favorite dish that he learned to make was Chicken Parmesan with a side salad. The intention of the training is to lead to self-sufficiency through developing the skills necessary to earn a living wage. (continued on page 3) Wellspring’s Mission:

Memorial tribute to Nancy Ballantine Bell Wellspring sadly acknowledges the death of Nancy Ballantine Bell, who passed away on February 11, 2016, at the age of 93. Nancy and her husband, the late John Peay Bell, did much to support Wellspring’s mission to provide housing and supportive services to those who face the challenges of severe mental illness. After years on the Wellspring Board, Nancy became an Honorary Lifetime Board Member and remained very attentive to the agency’s progress.

wellspring rolls out employment support Wellspring has joined the Individual Placement & Support (IPS) project - an employment service that helps consumers find and maintain meaningful, competitive jobs in the community. Our three person team will serve Wellspring consumers and those from affiliate agencies. The IPS model is “zero exclusion”, meaning everyone who is interested in work is eligible for services regardless of symptoms, substance use disorders, treatment decisions, or any other issue. The client-centered approach will focus on individual strengths and preferences. Consumers will work with their Employment Specialist to develop a personalized plan that focuses on their strengths, abilities and preferences. Employment Specialists build relationships with community employers with the goal of obtaining a competitive job based on the consumer’s job preferences. For more information contact: Ericha Winters, IPS supervisor (502) 475-0236

Nancy Ballantine Bell continued hold a driver’s license. During the flood of 1937 they moved to the second floor, where from the landing, she and her sister made daily assessments of the room arrangement as the piano floated across the living room. After high school Nancy attended college in Bowling Green, then worked for the FBI during the war. In 1944 she married John Bell, a Navy doctor from Hopkinsville, after a year of correspondence arranged by their sisters. When he completed his residency in New York they moved to Louisville, where they raised five children. Nancy was a delegate to the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, served on the Kentucky Council on Higher Education, and was a long-time supporter, board member, and Honorary Lifetime board member for Wellspring. Nancy loved bridge, cross-word puzzles, a well-crafted letter, Lake Michigan, and dogs. She loved politics, FDR and John F. Kennedy; Nixon not so much. Even through her final days, she loved the people she encountered and the stories of their lives. Nancy was preceded in death by her son John in 1968, son-inlaw Tom McKune in 2007, and husband John in 2008. She is survived by four children, Jane, Walter, David, and Victor; and nine grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. The Bell Family wishes to thank the able and forever-patient staff at Treyton Oak Towers. They were genuine friends to Nancy and to her family. A memorial celebration of her life is planned for April.

Seventh grade student steps up for Wellspring

We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community. What’s even more heart-warming, is when a 7th grader steps up to support our mission. That’s exactly what Barret Middle School student Sena Fulmore did. As a Beta Club project, Sena designed a beautiful set of note cards, each one incorporating Wellspring and a mental health message. The cards have raised over $500 so far for Wellspring. Sena with her mother, Charlsie who is on the Derby Preview Party Committee. -2Feb Newsletter .indd 2
