Stepping Up...

Steps In...

Took A Step...

The Gheens Foundation stepped up with a $10,00 grant to help expand and nurture Community Outreach & Education efforts that will educate both mental health providers and the broader community about the Crisis Stabilization Program.

YUM! Foundation steps in with $10,000 to help defray the expense of providing over 13,000 meals to 500+ clients at the CSUs this year.

Through a $5,000 grant, Norton HealthCare took a step to help assure that the CSUs’ high-quality medical and therapeutic services will be available when they are needed the most.

Final Step:

“ Wellspring’s Crisis Stabilization Program was the final step that helped me find safety and stability, and the dignity of a home.” Cliff shares his story of recovery on page 3.

STUDY SHOWS PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING A WIN-WIN FOR ALL…. Wellspring has long believed Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) to be the key for many people with severe and persistent mental illness to begin rebuilding their lives. Now, thanks to a Passport Health Plan Improved Health Outcomes Program grant, we have the proof. The study shows that PSH provides important opportunities for not only housing but a means for achieving personal independence, dignity, and a higher quality of life – while at the same time, significantly reducing utilization of costly services. The study demonstrates what we have long suspected: PSH is a win-win for all concerned. Visit our website to learn more about the study’s findings.

VISTA COMING TO WELLSPRING

“REMADE FROM BROKEN PIECES” An Extraordinary Story of Recovery Highlights 18th Annual Derby Preview Party

“I

could never have imagined a night like this.” Cliff Wade says, shaking his head. “After all the nights when I didn’t think there might even be a tomorrow, now I know why I had to get through them – it was so I could be here for Wellspring tonight.” Cliff’s compelling story of recovery was captured in Remade from Broken Pieces, which premiered at this year’s Wellspring Derby Preview Party. In the video, sponsored by Passport Health Plan, Cliff shares how his mental illness and abuse of alcohol cost him his marriage, his home and – nearly his life. “But when I found Wellspring and I could get some housing and some

help, then I got some hope again.” After a hospitalization, Cliff did a brief “step-down” to Wellspring’s Crisis Stabilization Program. Finally stable, he was ready for an apartment through our Affordable Housing Program – and also ready to rebuild his life. Now a Peer Support Specialist, Cliff shares his story with humility, and pride; he beams with joy over being reconnected with his family and having a new circle of friends. His sharing at this year’s event was a catalyst for a record-breaking Bid for Recovery, and helped raise over $172,000 for Wellspring’s programs. Cliff Wade

We are delighted to welcome Martha Fuller as Wellspring’s first VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America)! Martha will be working with Laura Albovias to develop a Housing Management database to better track and report information for Wellspring and our funding sources. She will also help strengthen and broaden our landlord network to increase housing options for our clients. Martha will begin her VISTA service in June and be with us for a year. We are looking forward to the higher level of support we can provide for clients with Martha on-board. VISTA was envisioned by President Kennedy in the early 1960s, along with several other programs, including the Peace Corps “to help provide urgently needed services in urban and rural poverty areas.” VISTA was launched by President Lyndon Johnson as part of his “war on poverty.” More than 7,000 people a year continue to answer this call to service, contributing invaluable skills and energy to tackling some of society’s deepest needs. -2-
