SPRING / SUMMER 2019
welcome
We are pleased to be bringing you our third edition of to|morrow your go-to magazine for all things Welwyn Garden City. Welwyn Garden City is Wonderful. We know it, you know it but this time you won’t just be hearing it from us; we’ve invited three local bloggers to collaborate and give us their insight into what our town has to offer. Amy McGuire will be focusing on fitness, Amy Lanza will be giving us her top tips on nutrition and Melanie Wall will be sharing the fashion trends. Our town has been designed as a ‘town for healthy living’ by Ebenezer Howard, and wasn’t he a visionary? Almost 100 years on, healthy living is all the rage. Whether it is meditating, breathing, vegan-ing, yoga-ing, we would try it all to feel better and happier with our body and our mind. But it doesn’t have to be all at the same time. In our wellbeing feature on page 16, Daniella Davis Taylor is focusing on some very simple techniques
Why to|morrow? We all know the way we shop is changing. It’s so easy to sit at home on the sofa clicking away, but what about the experience? We are proud of our town centre and, I am sure you will agree, it would be fantastic if it survived. to|morrow magazine is funded by the shops and businesses of Welwyn Garden City through the Welwyn Garden City BID. We want our shops, our cafés, our restaurants

to restore the mind and body balance. We are firm believers that baby steps, trying something small every day can have a very positive effect on your everyday wellbeing. We’re getting in the festival mood with a 4 page feature on the World Food Festival to help you plan your visit and make the most of your experience. Cinema on the Green returns this summer with family favourites and blockbusters such as Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born, all for free! (see page 2). We are running some amazing competitions with prizes worth hundreds of pounds on our social media channels (follow @wonderfulwgc) and throughout the magazine. And all this while we are really gearing up for the biggie that will be 2020 when Welwyn Garden City turns one hundred (I know, we don’t look it).

COV ER STORY
“
When we were challenged to create a male fashion cover we didn’t have to look far to find our models. G and Harrison were such a pleasure to work with, we would shoot another front cover with them anytime!” Mariana Bitonte, BID Manager
‘N
ever work with children or animals’ is what they say. We are very lucky that our amazing photographer Zoe Cooper is up for a challenge. When we were designing our front cover shoot for SS19, we knew just what we wanted, a man and a child, enjoying the Garden City and showing off some of the Summer fashion trends. Easy, right? The thing is, easy is not our thing and we like to keep it in the family, and by family I mean it literally. So here comes the story of our two gorgeous models. We’ve known Harrison Wolff (he has a model’s name already, destined to be a cover boy!) since before he was born as he is the son of one of our BID Managers Nicky Wolff. We couldn’t have found a more beautiful and professional model if we’d looked in all the agencies in the country. Harrison was such a pleasure to work with, gave us all the smiles we needed and more for good measure, and it only took some popcorn to get over the first and only wobble. He had such an amazing time that he has since decided that nursery is too boring for him and he wants to come to work with mummy every day. Now girls and boys form an orderly queue outside Stonehills Hairdressing if you want to meet our gorgeous model G. Lithuanian born ‘G’ has been hairdressing since 1999 and has quickly created an incredibly loyal clientele in Welwyn Garden City since co-founding Stonehills Hair. Anyone who books to see G instantly becomes hooked to his charm and directional approach to hairdressing, but also, they recognize his expertise, skills and knowledge about all things hair. ‘G’ started his career working in his native Lithuania with colour mega house Schwarzkopf, before moving to the UK in 2003. Here, he joined a London based salon group and met his future partners Mike and Ornela, what he didn’t expect was to end up on the cover of to|morrow magazine.

Stonehills hair was set up in 2010 with Mike Paraliki’s vision of top class London West End hair salon standards offering up to date talent in a welcoming and comfortable environment, where guests can feel a sense of belonging.
“We are totally committed to providing our team with ‘CPD’ (continuous professional development), the right products and tools, that they enjoy using and which will help them to create the perfect looks our guests will love, whilst maintaining their hair and scalps in fabulous condition” says Mike Paraliki. Over the years, the team have been regulars at competitions showcasing their skills as well as getting involved in the community. THINKING OF SELLING YO U R H O M E?
THE FRIENDLY TEAM AT WRIGHTS ARE READY TO HELP... Spring & summer are fantastic seasons to put your property on the market with a rise in potential buyers
MEMPHIS MOVEMENT Memphis was a design movement that began in 1981 and rebelled against ‘good taste’. It favoured clashing colours, unusual finishes like laminate and terrazzo, using simple, graphic squiggle prints whilst shunning straight lines for curves and circles. Memphis design is now making a comeback but with a softer colour palette.

Try being a little braver with your colour choices. Spring is the perfect time to be adventurous with colour, so try adding an accent chair or mix contrasting colours like coral with turquoise, ambers with purple or fuchsia with orange. If that feels like a step too far, why not try softer tones, like mint green with blush pink tones.
Spring has always been a popular time for reorganising the home. With over 50,000 #declutteryourlife posts on Instagram, along with the hugely successful debut of Marie Kondo’s Netflix series ‘Tidy Up’, clever solutions are increasingly popular, and aesthetic has become as important a consideration as functionality.
BIOPHILIA In 2019, the trend for bringing the outside in is continuing to grow. Indoor plants increase our connection with nature and the great outdoors, encouraging a feeling of wellbeing and calm. Additionally, some plants such as the Spider plant are known to purify the air increasing the health benefits. Use different size, colour, or textured pots to create a group or ‘gang’ as a feature in your room.
S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y Responsible design has come a long way over the last few years. Increased awareness of the fragility of our planet means homeowners are carefully considering the impact of their purchases. Reclaiming, reusing and recycling is becoming the norm with increased offers of hand crafted and sustainable products.

MY DAY IN THE GARDEN CITY Words by: Melanie Wall @styledbymel1
We invited Instagram style blogger MELANIE WALL @styledbymel1 to enjoy a day in Welwyn Garden City, Mel is 46 and doesn’t look it. She lives in St Albans with her son, her partner and Jimmy Chew – their pet rabbit. Working in Hatfield, I tend to pop into Welwyn Garden City fairly often in my lunch breaks. My trips usually consist of collecting dry cleaning from Johnsons and getting kale for Jimmy Chew - he prefers the whole leaf kale and Sainsbury’s always seem to have it, luckily! Occasionally, time permitting, I’ll pop into H&M – 2 floors of affordable fashion, how can I resist? So, with limited knowledge of what else Welwyn Garden City had to offer, I was delighted when I was asked to spend a Friday morning finding out more. First on the agenda was John Lewis. Funnily enough, John Lewis in Welwyn is my all-time favourite department store. I simply love the traditional feel and layout of it. However, I only tend to go there around Christmas time for gifts, so I was totally thrilled to be there for a 2 hour Personal Styling session. I actually trained as a personal stylist five years ago so you’d think this wouldn’t be something I was interested in, but not at all! Just as a dentist needs a dentist and a hairdresser needs a hairdresser, a stylist will always benefit from another stylist’s creativity! And I couldn’t have asked for a more fun and knowledgeable lady. Becca dressed me in a lot of colour and pattern, very different to what I would normally choose for myself, and I loved the results.
Also, the styling suite is magnificent - private, plush and posh – I felt like a celebrity! Before I knew it, it was lunch time and so I skipped (not literally, more a state of mind!) across the green to Bebo (11 Stonehills, WGC). The menu is mahoosive – with more than four mega sized chalkboards of choice. I opted for the prawn, avocado and salad sandwich, on brown. Thought I’d best be good after the Danish pastry which Becca kindly provided earlier!

JACKET, Reiss £265 TOP, Reiss £95 SKIRT, Reiss £155 SHOES, Dune £70 2.
Last up, I went to have my hair done at The Salon (7 Howardsgate, WGC). Now, this is where I saw a part of the town that I’d never seen before – it was so beautiful, even on a grey, rainy day. The Salon is just one of the many shops, pubs and restaurants which surround the lush, tree-lined, green space, complete with a beautiful historical water fountain (note to self – very Instagrammable ). I can only imagine how glorious this space is in the summer with festivals and events taking place. Inside The Salon, hairstylist, Isabella, deftly created me an ‘up do’ worthy of the red carpet in record breaking time - but not so quick that I couldn’t enjoy a little glass of complimentary fizz and a bit of ‘Friday feeling’ chit-chat.

And as if the weather gods knew I was just about to leave the salon and walk back to my car, the rain stopped. I walked through Marks and Spencer Foodhall, bought some ready meals and a fashion magazine, and left the lovely city of Welwyn Garden a very happy lady. Made even happier by the parking only costing me a fiver – bargain! @styledbymel1 SPRING / SUMMER 2019

FOOD
YOU’VE GOT TO
NOURISH TO FLOURISH! Words by: Amy Lanza @nourishing.amy
N
ourishing our bodies isn’t anything new and doesn’t involve any complicated ingredients and laborious daily routines. Nourishment can be found in the simplest of forms, from an extra glass of water a day, to walking a little bit further next time you pop on your trainers, there are so many ways we can nourish our bodies from the inside out. If we think of our body as a flower, we would not and could not expect a vibrant flower to bloom and flourish without the proper care and attention it deserves, be that food, water, sunlight or warmth. There are conditions in which this flower will thrive and the same can be said for our bodies. So what are the “perfect” conditions to ensure we flourish? There is, sadly, no one-size-fitsall answer to health and wellbeing as every body is different and functions in different ways. However, there are a few routines and practises that we can all benefit from that I like to include in my day to day life: 1.
EAT THE RAINBOW! Differently coloured fruits and vegetables pack different nutritional punches - for example, red foods like tomatoes, berries and red peppers are high in vitamin C while greens like spinach, courgettes and green grapes contain chlorophyll which is said to replenish red blood cells and improve energy. Don’t forget the blue, purple, orange and yellow ones, too!
10 to|morrow
■
2.
FRIENDLY FATS. Far too many people fear “fatty” foods but there is a wealth of health benefits that natural fats can bring. Foods such as nuts, seeds, avocado and oils have nourishing, heart and healthprotecting goodness.
3.
BE PREPARED! We are more likely to make decisions around food that don’t make us feel great when we are hungry or out and about. We buy convenience foods packed with nasties without much goodness. I always have a few snacks to hand: hummus and carrots, nut butter sachets, fresh fruit and homemade granola bars are great choices.
4.
SPRING / SUMMER 2019
PLANT POWERED. There is good reason why veganism and vegetarianism are on the increase and why 1 in 3 Brits have stopped or decreased their meat consumption. Opt for plant-based protein sources like tofu, tempeh, chickpeas and beans and see how nourished you feel - while protecting the planet!
5.
THINK NOURISHING THOUGHTS. Nourishment isn’t just what we put into our bodies, it’s how we think and how we talk to our bodies, too. Treat your body well, be kind and accept yourself as you are for an emotionally nourished body.
My vegan lunch in Bill’s A restaurant chain that is flying the flag for exciting plant-based and healthier meal alternatives is Bill’s. From sharing appetisers to Asian fusion starters, salad bowls, hearty mains and tempting deserts, there is something for everyone to enjoy. To start, we shared the Vegan Hoisin Duck which was packed with rich and sticky hoisin flavour and served with a zingy chopped salad dressed with miso, chilli and lime. Made from soya protein, this mock duck would fool anyone and leave them feeling nourished. I chose a beautiful plant based salad bowl with an inventive explosion of flavour for my main meal. The service in Bill’s was friendly, informative and efficient despite being a busy mid-week lunchtime and we were very well looked after. Sample the delights of Bill’s at 32 Howardsgate, WCG

Line a 8x8” baking tray with parchment paper and preheat oven to Fan 160/180*C. Mash bananas in a large bowl and add the vanilla, chia seeds, oil, maple syrup and milk. Stir and leave for 10 minutes. To the bowl, add coconut sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, flour and cacao powder and stir until there are no clumps of flour. Fold through the chocolate chunks. Pour into the lined tin, and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until firm to the touch and an inserted tooth pick comes out clean. Allow the brownies to cool in tin for 10 minutes before removing onto a wire rack and to cool fully before icing. To make the dark chocolate tahini ganache, stir together all the ingredients until smooth and creamy. Spread on top of the brownies when cold and cut into 16 squares. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

IT MAKES
SENSE... YOUR SMILE:
A
s the first thing a person will notice about you, your smile should help you feel confident and proud. However, over half the adult population are unhappy with their teeth and oral health is a growing concern. 31% of UK adults report having tooth decay due to sugary diets and poor oral hygiene, which is entirely preventable. Now, more than ever, it’s important to attend regular dental check-ups.
Pop in and see the team at the Centre for Dentistry, inside Sainsbury’s, 44 Church Road, WGC.
YOUR HEARING: As one of our primary senses, being able to hear helps us to communicate and engage with the people around us. As we age, our ability to hear begins to change and unfortunately deteriorate but it can take time for people to become aware of the impact that poor hearing can have on everyday life. Whether it’s constantly asking loved ones to repeat themselves or turning up the T.V, there are some tell-tale signs that you may be suffering with hearing loss. It’s
important to not stress yourself out too much if you think your hearing is deteriorating as there are plenty of options to improve the quality of your hearing. Coming to terms with hearing loss can be challenging but with the correct help and advice from the team of experts at Scrivens; better hearing is a reality for most people in later life. Visit Scrivens at 47 Howardsgate, WGC.
YOUR EYES: Eating a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables could help to prevent eye problems and some eye conditions that can eventually lead to permanent sight damage. For instance, kale, broccoli, spinach, red peppers and leeks, all contain antioxidants including lutein and zeaxanthin, which can help to protect your eyes against age-related macular degeneration.
The eye is surrounded by fluid, which protects it by washing away debris and dust every time we blink. In order to maintain a healthy balance of fluid in the eye it is important to stay well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can prevent both your body and your eyes from becoming dehydrated. You should have your eyes checked at least every two years. For under 16s and over 70s, they should be checked at least once a year. Make an appointment at Vision Express Opticians, 61 Howardsgate, WGC.
IT’S ALL ABOUT BLONDES, BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT… For spring/summer neutral and biscuit blondes have taken over, resulting in fabulous cool & soft colour blends to suit most skin tones. Book a complimentary colour consultation at GREYS for this seasons updates and refresh that winter colour for the new season’s ahead. 45 Howardsgate WGC.

A BREATH OF

Words by Daniella Davis Taylor CEO of Lifeforceworld.com info@lifeforceworld.com • www.lifeforceworld.com
The breath should be the first port of call when we go in search of clarity and peace, as it is the breath that sustains your existence and carries you through the world. Our body is the ship, the mind displays the map, and the breath is the navigational system. The breath is the direct link to that amazing thing we call life, and it is the one thing we do not pay enough attention to! Breath awareness is the key to a healthy mind & body, and if we don’t look after all 3 of these vessels sufficiently, we’ll have nowhere to live!
SO WHY IS THE BREATH SO IMPORTANT
disorientated, unruly and congested, leading to feelings of emotional overwhelm, stress and anxiety. A few minutes a day focusing on your breath will have a huge impact on improving your overall health
YOGA BENEFITS THE MIND AND BODY More people now than ever before are taking up yoga as stress medicine, with many doctors and healthcare professionals recommending classes to their patients to combat a variety of health issues, especially mental stress.

SO HOW CAN YOGA BENEFIT US?
■■
Relieves stress, anxiety & depression
■■
Clears the mind
■■
Increases oxygen levels in the body
■■
Nourishes the internal organs and the physical framework
Yoga is one of the world’s leading exercise practices that combats both mind and body in one hit. Why? Because the breath picks up the mind and literally plants it back inside the body! This is implemented through a series of mindful poses, each linking mind to body. Too much of our mental focus is outside the body, leading to physical disorientation, malfunction and stress. It’s a bit like a car rolling aimlessly down a street with no driver. When the body has no conscious driver, bang goes the nervous system, going into panic looking for its driver, and the rest of the body follows suit!
A problem in today’s society is that our minds are so pre-occupied with external distractions and demands, that 90% of the time we are not consciously present inside the body. When we are not breath aware, the mind becomes

IN THE
GARDEN CITY WE ALL LOVE A BIT OF INSTAGRAM, WE SPEND HOURS A DAY SCROLLING THROUGH STORIES AND PICTURES AND WISHING WE WERE THERE. One of our favourite WGC instagrammers at the moment is Amy McGuire. We are one of Amy’s almost 14,000 followers. Her Instagram account @amymrmcguire has a wonderful selection of tips on fitness and nutrition as well as reviews and advice.
CAFÉ TRIO: After looking at the intriguing menu, my fiancé and I placed an order for their smoothies which arrived super quick. I ordered tropical punch, as soon as I sipped my beverage it took me back to laying on the beach in France! We also tasted the iconic Mediterranean mezze, I was blown away with the flavours that burst in my mouth. I can state that Café Trio produce the best ciabatta bread! I couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough, from genuine staff to terrific cuisine look no further for your new hangout location! 15 Wigmores South WGC, AL8 6PL 01707 322121

AMY’S TOP TIPS ON KEEPING FIT & HEALTHY:
FIT & HAPPY
When it comes to maintaining your personal and physical health, everybody is different. The simple strategy is to eat healthy and exercise regularly; but if it was that easy why is it so difficult?
MY TIPS TO YOU ARE: Be realistic, set goals you BELIEVE you can REACH, instead of listing endless bullet points and disappointing yourself. ALWAYS have a well-balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner, instead of continuous snacking. Create an effective meal-plan you can adhere to. DON’T restrict your treat intake, this can lead to future bingeing and make it harder to bounce back into your routine. MAKE EXERCISE FUN! List parts of your body you want to improve and split dedicated workouts throughout the week. Keep organised!
ANYONE CAN KEEP FIT AT ANYTIME;
My favourite gym in Welwyn Garden City is Anytime Fitness, I love their slogan ‘Let’s Make Healthy Happen at Anytime Fitness Welwyn Garden City!” Their friendly, professional staff are trained to help you on your fitness journey, no matter how much support you need.
NO TIME FOR THE GYM?

TOWN
‘A town designed for healthy living’ by its founder Ebenezer Howard, Welwyn Garden City lives up to his expectations almost one hundred years on. We dedicated this issue of to|morrow to health and wellbeing because we know how taking a few baby steps towards improving the way you feel will help you enjoy life even more. We like to think of Welwyn Garden City as the perfect shopping destination where the country meets the city, with the wonderful surroundings and the great shopping offer, as we once described it ‘city shopping in the country’. Times are changing and we are moving along with them. The way we shop is changing but isn’t it still nice to get off that sofa and enjoy a bit of retail therapy the old fashion way. What if you could go shopping with ‘man’s best friend’? Cats may rule the internet but in Welwyn Garden City dogs take centre stage. There are many dog friendly places to eat, drink coffee and shop and now even John Lewis and Partners has opened its doors to our furry friends, what more can we ask for. TALK
WELWYN GARDEN CITY WILL BE 100! 2020 will mark the centenary of Welwyn Garden City. The Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation is a community organisation planning what is shaping up to be a fantastic year of celebrations, which will be starting in style in January 2020 with the Welwyn Garden City Festival of Light, where the town centre will be transformed with over 15 dazzling lighting installations. There will be a fantastic array of events and activities throughout the year, such as a huge carnival, complete with 15 floats, which will take place on 11 July. Over 40 of the town’s sports and leisure clubs are planning events and competitions to run throughout the year, alongside the town’s music and performing arts groups with a Festival.
A sculpture of Ebenezer Howard is also being planned in celebration of his vision for Welwyn Garden City – ‘a true marriage of town and country’. To appreciate the beauty of our green space, a 20.20km Centenary Walk will circle the villages around the town, with spokes leading back to the centre. Finally, no 100 year celebration would be complete without a Royal Visit! We won’t know until nearer the time who it will be so watch this space for more details.
To find out more, including opportunities to get involved, visit www.wgccentenary.org All celebrations will be privately funded with support from a number of the town’s businesses and organisations.
N E WS WE WENT FOR COFFEE WITH THE HOWARD CENTRE’S SHAUN WALL They say change is as good as a holiday, and we have definitely started to feel the warmth and breath of fresh air since The Howard Centre welcomed a new Centre Manager. We caught up with Shaun Wall over a coffee in Starbucks who joined Welwyn Garden City’s popular retail destination in January this year, and already has hit the ground running. l Tell us a bit about yourself, what were you doing before you joined The Howard Centre? I am a father of 3; two boys Aaron (9), Reece (8) and 21-month-old little girl Lara. I have been married 10 years to my lovely wife, Carli who I met on holiday whilst I was serving in the Armed Forces. My life and career became a little more serious when I joined the Royal Air Force, serving as a member of the Elite RAF Regiment, which is the ground force fighting unit of the RAF, where I served two tours of Iraq in the Mid 2000’s. When I left the forces, I got into

management where I found my feet in the leading of several teams. I climbed the career ladder whilst improving my skillset required to enter the world of retail Shopping Centres 7 years ago, with my most recent role as the Centre Manager of The Spires Shopping Centre in Barnet.
l What attracted you to the Howard Centre and Welwyn Garden City? When I started out working in shopping centres, I already had a 10-year plan of where I wanted to be within my career and in what location. Living reasonably local, I always had my heart set on one day having the opportunity to manage The Howard Centre. The centre has a real community feel, with an ideal location, and has some fantastic brands with really strong anchor retailers. The centre also has great support from wellestablished retailers on the High Street such as John Lewis, Waitrose and Debenhams.
l What can we expect from you as Centre Manager? I am a passionate and hard-working person who takes pride in everything I do; from work-life to family-life and everything in-between. I will be leading the wonderful centre management team, asking questions and finding better and exciting ways of exceeding our customer and retailer needs. I want to engage with all local stakeholders to share my knowledge and ideas to make The
Howard Centre and WGC a place people want to visit and keep visiting for many years to come.
l Any exciting news that you can share with us at all? We will be partnering with UK Strongman in the summer to create a fundraising event within the centre and town that will support a fantastic local charity, Willow Foundation. Our team is putting in a lot of time to the preparation of the event to ensure the success where we’re not creating ‘another charity event’, but a legacy that will bring the community together for one common goal, supporting people when they need it the most.
l Any messages for Howard Centre Shoppers/the people of Welwyn Garden City? I look forward to spending many years here at The Howard Centre and I look forward to forging strong relationships within the community. My doors are always open and I welcome all to provide feedback on how we can improve your experience whilst visiting the centre.
For regular updates on the centre’s news, events, offers or promotions visit howardcentre.co.uk or find us on facebook @HowardCentre.
