TOP TREND TIPS FROM THE JOHN LEWIS WELWYN STYLISTS

Sure as the first daffs of spring, floral prints flourish throughout Welwyn Garden City’s fashion stores, but this season they bloom with a distinctly vintage twist. Breaking through with a clear nod to the 60s and 70s, as well as even earlier – taking us back to the 40s and 50s, this season’s iteration of the floral trend feels surprisingly fresh. Embrace the retro sentimentality, no matter how big the print and mix and match them to your heart’s content.

Style it out with on trend denim - whether it’s a cropped jacket, flared or boyfriend jeans, frayed or fringed, we can't live without them! It's denim every way this season. Pack a punch with Crayola colours in tomato red, emerald green, cobalt blue and bright yellow, or soften your look with the palest pink, hyacinth, lilac and mint green. It's all about the colour.

Shop the vintage floral trend in stores like New Look, Next, H&M, Debenhams, M&S, Monsoon, Topshop and more throughout the town.

Mix up those prints! Be bold with stripes vs spots, gingham and checks. Still not sure how to style it up for SS18? Check out @fashionstylingjlwelwyn on Instagram for the hottest looks and styling tips, or book your own personal styling appointment in store today. NEXT - £40

It’s Spring in the Garden City. Although it hadn’t yet sprung in mid March when Tony Wellington was shooting the amazing cover images with model Katja Zwara in the aftermath of the Beast from the East! The shoot, which was produced by Mike Paraliki from award winning Stonehills Hairdressing and the Welwyn Garden City BID, aims to capture the wonders of urban life in the countryside, with the expert styling by John Lewis Welwyn’s Personal Stylists, Amanda Risley and Sarah Keefe. Stonehills Hairdressing design is eye catching, simple and wearable, and Katja shows it off beautifully in the cover image. Katja’s make up was by Bobbi Brown’s creative artist Amanda Leo who used the new Capri Nudes eye shadow pallete (£49.50), Almost Nude lipgloss (£22) lip colour and the new All Over Glow Sole (£29) foundation to complete the look.

IS YOUR CONTACTLESS CARD SAFE? Contactless has become second nature for many of us as it is so quick and easy. However it can also be a quick and easy way for criminals to swipe money from your cards as you are sitting in a restaurant, browsing the shops or waiting for the bus.

• Covering your card with tin foil. The metal acts as a barrier and blocks the contactless signal which is emitted by the card. As tin foil can rip easily - it should be replaced often.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF?

• Other special wallets can also be bought from John Lewis starting at £16.50.

• Products which can protect your card are widely available. Fraud protection companies sell A5 pieces of plastic which can be cut to size and placed inside wallets that cost as little as £7.50 and act in the same way as tin foil and block all contactless signals.

Though it is a simple way to pay, criminals can swipe money from your cards at any opportunity. There are several ways you can protect your contactless card against the data theft.

BREAKFAST / BRUNCH

CAFÉ TRIO

BEBO CAFÉ

It’s not for us to have favourites or anything, but one thing we’d like to put out there is, you can’t beat a Bill’s breakfast. There, we’ve said it. With a light and airy, rustic, industrial-inspired interior and a mix of quiet booths and sharing tables, plus some outdoor seats overlooking Howardsgate, you couldn’t pick a better spot on a sunny day. Their breakfast menu boasts everything from granola to avocado on toast, pancakes and the traditional Bill’s Breakfast – all available ‘til midday Monday – Friday or 1pm at weekends.

Offering a home-from-home approach, with a Mediterranean twist, Café Trio is one of the town’s most popular independent cafés. Top of the breakfast menu is, of course, the traditional full English but if you fancy something a little different then their Greek inspired Mediterranean breakfast ticks all the boxes. You’ll find them tucked away in the peaceful Wigmores South, just opposite Sainsbury’s.

Whether you’re after a light bite, or something a little more hearty, Bebo Café has it covered. Choose from a mindboggling menu of sandwich, baguette and wrap options, plus jacket potatoes with a multitude of fillings and much more – all prepared fresh on site. Conveniently located in the heart of Welwyn Garden City shopping, between The Howard Centre, John Lewis and Waitrose, it’s perfect for a mid-shop pit-stop.

Picnic that packs a Punch

Warm, sunny days are the perfect excuse to head out into the great outdoors to soak up some much-needed vitamin D, and in Welwyn Garden City, we’re blessed with plenty of places to do just that. Take a pew on one of the benches lining the gardens in Howardsgate or seek solace at the Coronation Fountain on Parkway. Whatever you decide, a private little picnic is an absolute must – of course, if you’re feeling generous, you could always share it with family and friends.

SAINSBURY’S

WAITROSE

If you come to town on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month between April and October, the Midweek Munch brings a variety of local street food traders to the heart of town, to mix up your midweek lunch options. Located on Howardsgate from 11am – 3pm, you can take a munch on your lunch, to a medley of music played throughout the event.

Located right in the heart of town, Sainsbury’s offers an extensive array of lunchtime delights. From pre-packed sandwiches and salads for ultimate convenience or the option to create your own customised culinary masterpiece from the in-store salad bar, bakery, deli or hot food counters. There's also a selection of cold meats, quiche and other treats found throughout the store.

We couldn’t discuss lunch without a shout out to Sushi Daily at Waitrose. Serving fresh sushi, sashimi, salads and Gyoza daily – it’s ideal for dining al fresco or lunch on the go. They even offer amazing platters – perfect for picnics, working lunches or office celebrations. With tasting sessions from 12-2pm and 4-6pm every day, you can even try before you buy, to make sure you like what’s on the menu!

Young hopefuls from schools across Hertfordshire and beyond recently battled it out at Oaklands College’s restaurant in its annual Young Chef of the Year competition. Here’s a flavour of some of the dishes served up throughout the competition. The shortlisted candidates enjoyed a two-hour cook-off, with a panel of experts including Lussmans Group Head Chef, Nick McGeown, Martin West, Head Chef at The Stables Restaurant at Oaklands College and local food writer Becky Alexander, judging the resulting dishes. Finalists were selected on the overall presentation, taste, execution and innovation of their plates with 15-yearold Amanda Garcia-Ghuran scooping the overall title of ‘Young Chef of the Year.'

ALL EYES ON OAKLANDS COLLEGE

Her winning dish was a mouth-watering plated fruit salad with clotted cream, rolled in toasted coconut and meringue - which was highly commended by the judges as one that any professional chef would be proud to serve.

Runners-up were awarded in both the savoury and sweet categories with Romila Khan of St. Albans Girls' School recognised for her Butter Chicken, white cumin rice and naan bread and Cairo Henderson-Bradshaw from Central Foundation Boys' School near Old Street in London acknowledged for his deconstructed cheesecake. A select few Level 1 Hospitality & Catering students from Oaklands also took part in their own category, which saw Jamie Teakle taking the crown for his Chicken Mango Salsa with Plain rice.

Offering around 1,500 full and part time courses, ranging from vocational studies, through to elite sports, the arts and a variety of A-Levels, Oaklands College is fully committed to ensuring their students reach their full potential. Their Welwyn Garden City campus is located just a stones throw from the town’s shopping, dining and entertainment venues, making it the perfect place to enjoy the perks of student life as well as making the most of resources such as the central library close at hand. DID YOU KNOW? There is a digital town trail developed by the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust around the town, just spot and scan the QR signs!

T

he current proposal requires substantial investment of several hundred million to deliver a combination of over 1,400 new homes including; affordable housing, sustainable employment, an Art Hub, Museum, Wellness Centre, Public Art and a new community building. The first phase of development will include Social & Private Housing and the extensive refurbishment of the Listed Shredded Wheat Production Hall for creative modern office users, and the renovation of the railway footbridge to include new lighting and a lift, making the town more accessible. The aim is to complete these in time for the Centenary in 2020.

The planning application has now been submitted to Welwyn and Hatfield Council and their decision is expected before the summer, but while a decision is being reached, there are a number of exciting projects, involving local schools underway.

One of the key parts of the vision for the Wheat Quarter is its focus on art created by local and international talent. From public art, incorporated into the site, to the establishment of an internationally respected gallery, called the Art Hub, bringing a creative vision that the community can engage with is a fundamental part of what makes this development so exciting.

The Art Hub will be situated in what was previously the boiler house with an artist in residence and a permanent collection from internationally renowned artists, including Andy Warhol, curated by the Frameless gallery. Plans for an international competition for the public space art are underway, which will hopefully, allow the commission of stunning and accessible work from around the world, as well as from local artists.

On 9th March, international street artist Otto Schade was welcomed to the site to create his iconic images on the tanks for everyone walking to and from town to marvel at. Otto’s work can be seen all over the world and students from the consortium schools and Oaklands College were able to meet him and find out more about his work.

WELCOME TO THE WHEAT QUARTER It has been a very exciting time on the east side of Welwyn Garden City, with demolition progressing on the old Shredded Wheat factory site after 10 years of being vacant. Watching the iconic, listed buildings emerging from the debris, you can really start to imagine how amazing the development, named “The Wheat Quarter”, could be for the town. 14

All the junior schools in the town have been invited to take part in a competition to decorate the hoarding panels around the site and bring to life the town’s ethos of ‘Work, Live and Play’. Together with the Digswell Art Trust, the developers will be judging submissions from each school at the end of May, with the winning artworks being brought to life at the beginning of June.

The new civic centre is designed by the Louis de Soisson Architectural Practice. Their founder was one of the key players in the development of Welwyn Garden City and designed the original Shredded Wheat factory, bringing a sense of continuity to a very contemporary building. The civic building will also house a wellness centre and community space for the people of the town.

ART BY OTTO SCHADE

There are also plans for a heritage exhibition to celebrate the amazing history of the Shredded Wheat site with archive footage and images, many of which will be seen by the public for the first time. The plans are ambitious, but we are passionate about bringing a sensitive regeneration to this iconic site, and building a resilient and exciting community for the future.

It is important that you have your say.To find out how visit www.thewheatquarter.co.uk.

WE’RE GETTING WI-FI

WELCOME TO OUR NEW AMBASSADORS

GARDEN CITY BLOOMS

Whether you’re in Welwyn Garden City for business or pleasure, we know that many visitors want to be able to use the Internet while here. So to give you a little helping hand, the Welwyn Garden City BID is installing fast and free public wi-fi throughout the town centre this summer.

David Garment and Natasha Dee joined the BID team in April. Their role, as ambassadors is to engage and assist visitors to the town, develop relationships within the business community and aid operations in the town centre. Please say hello if you see them about town.

We’re pleased to announce that, thanks to the support of local businesses, we’ll be installing lots more floral displays this summer to brighten up the town and make your shopping experience even more enjoyable.

After one of the longest, coldest, whitest winters we’ve seen for a while, you wouldn’t be the only one yearning to get out in your little piece of paradise to nurture it back to its full glory. From shrubs and plants to garden accessories and patio furniture, you can realise the potential of your plot, right here in Welwyn Garden City. Be that a beautiful balcony, courtyard retreat or sprawling lawn.

IMPROVING PUBLIC SPACES

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

The safety and security of visitors and businesses in the town is of the greatest importance to the BID. With this in mind, we are taking on the WGCW retail crime scheme and providing all shops, pubs and ambassadors with hand portable radios to enable instant contact with each other, the CCTV control room and police officers on patrol. This also means that customers can be reassured that if they should witness or experience any undesirable behaviour, they can report it immediately.

The BID is working together with Hertfordshire County Council and Welwyn Hatfield Borough council to improve circulation throughout the town, with planned improvements to pedestrian and cycling routes as well as vehicular access.

We’re working with partners to support and encourage plans, to develop and refurbish buildings and public spaces, to build upon the strengths and improve the identity of the town.

To celebrate the launch of our brand new magazine, we’re giving our readers the chance to win a fabulous prize package comprising of a £100 John Lewis gift card, a personal styling package, including an appointment with a John Lewis Fashion Advisor, a bottle of fizz and a makeover with the winner’s chosen make-up house.
