Wenatchee W

hat do apple blossoms, waterfront parks and long strolls along the Columbia have in common? All of them are things you can see or do in the Wenatchee Valley. You could spend a full day in the historic downtown alone, exploring the shops, restaurants, wine bars and pubs you will find there. If downtown isn't quite your scene, you can spend your afternoon in nature instead, soaking in the sunlight and losing yourself amidst the sounds of rushing water and

the sweet, trilling song of birds. Want to head out to Bavarian Leavenworth and the amazing Lake Chelan for the day? With Wenatchee as your base, you’re closer than your daily commute. Wenatchee has the best trail systems in all of Central Washington. Bring your wheels or rent them and spend the day exploring miles of paved paths or hike the Wenatchee Foothills Trails — a collection of well-maintained trails just three miles from downtown that cross huge

World photo/Don Seabrook A pedestrian takes in a peaceful scene at Linden Tree Park in Wenatchee Tuesday, April 28, 2020. The barn was built in the 1930s by Ed Lindston whose family settled in the valley in 1907. It is now used as a boathouse by the Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club.

land preserves on the city’s western edge. Visitors can also choose to boat and swim in the beautiful Columbia River that carves its way between the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. Several companies, such as Columbia River Boat Rental, provide rentals at rates around $70 per hour. People can also choose to fish off several docks along the Columbia River. Head 20 minutes south of Wenatchee and you'll reach Squilchuck State Park and Mission Ridge,

where hiking and mountain biking opportunities abound through pristine Ponderosa Pine forests. At Mission Ridge you can take a 3.2 mile hike to Clara and Marion Lakes, two low-elevation alpine lakes surrounded by majestic larches, whose needles turn a shocking yellow in the fall. When it’s time to celebrate and eat, Wenatchee doesn’t disappoint. The valley has a huge roster of restaurants, including the best Mexican food scene in the state from taco trucks to sit-down restaurants.

What they’re saying Trip Advisor: "Wenatchee is tucked away in a rugged valley full of natural and manmade wonders, from challenging golf courses to rocky trails. Northwest Travel & Life: “The Wenatchee Valley has developed a burgeoning food and wine scene, a fitting place for Washington’s second largest public market.”

Northwest Travel Magazine: Summer Sips in Wenatchee — "Wenatchee is fast becoming a key player in

AAA Travel Guide: “A prime area for all-year recreation, from hiking in summer to skiing in winter.”

Sunset Magazine: 20 Western Dream Towns — Best Places to Live 2017 Forbes Magazine: 25 Best Places to Retire in 2017 — “Scenic, sunny Columbia River city … on the very dry side of the Cascade Mountain Range.”

World photo/Don Seabrook Jane Hawk, Wenatchee, strikes an Up Dog pose during an outdoor yoga session at Walla Walla Point Park near the sculpture, Coyote Leads The Salmon Up The River, Wednesday night, in June of 2020. Run by Traci Naubert, a local yoga instructor for 13 years, over 20 people participated in the second weekly session. Naubert says she will continue the free public classes that start at 5:30 p.m. at least until local gyms open again. Hawk says she has participated in yoga for 12 years and lately has been using local virtual classes.

A great base for exploring

W

herever you are planning to explore in North Central Washington, Wenatchee makes for the perfect base. Located halfway between Seattle and Spokane, Wenatchee has lots to offer by way of shopping, hotels, dining and entertainment. If you don't have your own vehicle, you will find plenty of options for transportation to take you to the surrounding areas. The metro Wenatchee area spans the Columbia River. Visitors can check out the North Central Washington orchards, go hiking in the forests or coulees, or take a joyride down the winding, scenic roads that snake through the Cascades. Twenty-two miles to the west, Leavenworth invokes Bavarian-style architecture, music and culture. Even closer still, Cashmere, 12 miles west, boasts an eclectic shopping district and is home to the world-famous Aplets and Cotlets candy factory. Just 45 miles to the north, the 55-mile-long Lake Chelan is an oasis of sun and water. Water sports, hiking and relaxing on the beach are just a few of the things you can do there.

Even more to explore

People can catch a ride on the miniature railroad at Wenatchee’s Riverfront Park. The Wenatchee Riverfront Railway is the only 10-inch gauge railway in the U.S. that’s open to the public. The diminutive train track, complete with pint-sized trains and a cute train station, costs $2 to ride and is open on select days throughout the year. The Wenatchee First Fridays Art Walk is also a great way to explore the downtown, while checking out the local art scene. People can visit the work of artists in shops, galleries and restaurants. Up for some swimming on a warm summer day? Wenatchee’s Walla Walla Point Park and Confluence State Park both have float-lined areas where you can safely swim in the Columbia River. Visitors can even go for a picnic or a stroll along the beaches on the riverside. The city does not post lifeguards, so people should be aware and play it safe in the water. The park also holds playgrounds and basic utilities, both parks are on the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail. In the summer, people can hike Mission Ridge to the Bomber Bowl. One of the most popular runs

8

The Wenatchee World Visitors Guide | 2021

at Mission Ridge Ski & Board, the Bomber Bowl, gets its name from the devastating crash of a B-24 bomber in 1944. The crash landed about 500 feet below the summit, killing all six crewmen and strewing the area with wreckage. Years later, a monument was created from a wing of the plane and is located just uphill from the original crash site. If you are wanting a peaceful day outdoors, grab a blanket and head to Ohme Gardens for an afternoon picnic. The gardens holds an ethereal quality. The alpine oasis overlooks the Columbia River on the north edge of Wenatchee and is full of stony paths that twist and turn through the high-country trees. You’ll find stone-slab benches to rest on — looking almost as if they have grown from the ridgetop on their own — as well as ponds, streams and waterfalls.

World photo/Don Seabrook Sculptures around the City of Wenatchee, including these two pieces seen Friday, June 26, 2020, in Riverfront Park near Orondo Avenue, will be taken over by the city after Art on the Avenues is giving away ownership effective June 30.

cross the river from Wenatchee, the city of East Wenatchee is carved into a shrub-steppe hillside. Though East Wenatchee is a bit drier than its more forested counterpart, it isn’t lacking in beauty. Gaze out across the Columbia and you will be greeted by a valley-wide panoramic view of Wenatchee, as well as the stunning landmark of Saddle Rock and the surrounding foothills. East Wenatchee is home to the biggest indoor mall in the Wenatchee Valley, tasty restaurants and lots of nearby golf. The area near Pangborn Memorial Airport — named for one of the two pilots who flew the Miss Veedol — is now home to bitcoin mining operations attracted by cheap hydropower. The East Wenatchee Clovis site, where 11,000 year old stone tools were discovered by a local farmer, is also nearby. The site has since been refilled, but not before uncovering a lot of history. f you are looking for an adrenaline fix, why not get it while riding the rushing waters of the Wenatchee River? The short stretch between Leavenworth and Cashmere — dubbed "one of the most popular whitewater runs in the state" by Wenatchee Outdoors — is a scenic whirlwind of roaring class two and three rapids. The stretch also offers convenient, quick shuttling, and easy access to the river. Combine that with

the warm sunshine found during the spring melt-off season and you have a recipe for a world-class run. Many professional rafting companies can be found in the area — more than a dozen each year. They run the river for the entire spring season and will feed you and bus you back to where you started. To find them, check outdoor stores and local listings in the Wenatchee and upper Wenatchee Valley communities, including the Leavenworth area.

Pybus Public Market

P

ybus Public Market is the place to be for community in Wenatchee. Filled with local shops and dining, it is the second largest public markets in Washington state and is located on the west bank of the Columbia River near downtown Wenatchee. Just outside, the 11-mile, paved Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail will whisk you away after an afternoon spent dining, checking out the local produce and shops, and soaking in quality time with friends and family. You can eat and shop at the market’s many stores and restaurants morning and night. The market is a community meeting place, filled with weekend art shows, live music and fundraisers. A piano even stands at the ready for anyone adventurous enough to play. The loop trail is right by the market and on the shoreline of the Columbia River. Head north past the market's osprey nest situated on a tall pole and check out the parks public art. Or, if you are feeling up to it, rent a bike and do the full loop — it will take about an hour. Afterward, visitors can check out historic downtown Wenatchee. The downtown is full of restaurants, pubs, cute cafes and ice cream parlors, quirky shops, public sculptures, the Numerica Performing Arts Center and the Wenatchee Valley Mu-

seum & Cultural Center. What they said “The building is breathtaking, the local farmers, restaurants and artisanal food producers it hosts are uniformly superb, and its location on the banks of the Columbia River is stunning.” • Seattle Refined/Komo “The Pybus Market has far more to offer than a location to buy your weekly supply of groceries. It is a historical destination where you can shop, dine, relax, bike on the river, meet friends, bring visitors, listen to music, and host your event or wedding — but most of all, it’s a place to connect with passionate artisans, inventive food retailers and Wenatchee’s creative community.” • Yakima Magazine “If you come to Wenatchee, you can’t miss the market with its fire engine red sign, “Public Market,” and flags flying at the entrance. Pybus lies two blocks east of historic downtown Wenatchee and converges at the Loop Trail, Riverfront Park, and Orondo Boat Basin. This exciting community market with delicious local foods, artisans, quality restaurants, specialties and much more is worth a visit.” • Real Food Traveler Adapting for COVID-19 Though it has forced some changes (like masks and 6 feet of separation), the

Gov. Jay Inslee said Monday the TTC in Wenatchee would be one of four mass vaccination sites starting next week. According to Tyler Regier with Lifeline, about as many people have showed up asking about the vaccine as have come for a free test — 66 on Jan. 19, 2021.

The Wenatchee Valley Skyhawks, a professional indoor football team, will play its home games in the arena from May through August. With the county park closed due to COVID-19 for the season, Garden’s director Jason Browning said the $300,000 building is just one of many updates he is tackling. A new stage area, relining and painting the eight pools, and creating two new paths are also on the agenda.

Ohme Gardens O

hme Gardens hold a mystical quality to its natural appeal. Take a stroll down any of its rustic paths and you will find yourself being reminded of the Shire or of some other faerie realm. The ponds and wildflowers, the shimmering streams and shady stone walkways — each of these elements seem to be imbued with a special sort of magic. In 1929, Herman Ohme purchased the land that would eventually be dubbed

Ohme Gardens. Originally intended to be an orchard, Herman and his wife were inspired by the breathtaking views of the Wenatchee Valley and Cascade Mountains that the craggy bluff offered and created the beautiful alpine escape we see today. The work was done over many long years, largely by hand, and is a true masterpiece of hard work, love and devotion. The gardens are open daily from April 15 through Oct. 15.

The trails are well-maintained and offer sweeping views of the city and Columbia River. Here are two of the most popular:

Entiat F

irst settled by the Columbia River Chinook Indian Tribe during the 1800s, Entiat sits at the confluence of the Columbia and Entiat rivers. The tribe named the town “Enteatqua,” which means rapid water — a fitting name for a city nestled between rivers. The Entiat River Valley is lined with orchards and bordered by the Wenatchee

National Forest. Entiat is located midway between Wenatchee and Lake Chelan on Highway 97A. The small, riverside town offers a host of outdoor recreational activities. Entiat Park has a playground for the kids, camping for RVs and tents and a boat launch. After an afternoon of relaxation, check out the nearby Entiaqua Trail for a

stroll along the rivers. Outside of town and buried in the mountains, both the Entiat National Fish Hatchery and Silver Falls are worth a visit. Nearby, in the tiny town of Ardenvoir, the Swallow Festival celebrates the return of spring swallows each year on the second Saturday in April. If you have time, make sure to check out Columbia

Breaks Fire Interpretive Center on the northside of Entiat. The center includes former fire lookouts, an interpretive trail and aims to educate the public about wildland fires. You can also take a walk down a memorial trail that honors every firefighter who has died fighting wildfires in North Central Washington. More info: columbiabreakswildfire.com

The sun sets on a runner along the Apple Capital Loop Trail at the foot of Fifth Street in Wenatchee in February, as seen through the sculpture "View Through the Open Window." The piece of permanent art owned by the Chelan County PUD was made by Richard Warrington, Cheney.

The Loop Trail T

he Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail — affectionately called "the loop" by those familiar with it — is more than just a trail. It is a local landmark. For a day of adventure, follow the 11-mile paved path along the shoreline of the Columbia as it crosses three bridges and threads through the various parks and natural ecosystems of the Wenatchee Valley.

Pick your path

On the Wenatchee side of the path you will find shade and green grass.

On the east side near the Odabashian Bridge, however, shrub-steppe and a beautiful view of the Cascades await.

History

The Pipeline Pedestrian Bridge, built in 1908, was the first bridge to span the Columbia River. Trees shade the trail near the bridge’s east end and Hale Park’s off-leash dog park is on the west end.

Fish

Stand on the pedestrian bridge spanning the Wenatchee River long

enough, and you just might see migrating salmon on their way upstream to spawn. The bridge is just a few steps from Confluence State Park.

Keep riding

Feel like going farther? Two more paved paths connect to the loop. The first travels 2.2 miles down the Columbia River to Hydro Park. While the other path goes 5.5 miles up the Columbia to Lincoln Rock State Park. Don’t forget to stop for a breather and enjoy the view of Rocky Reach Dam on your way to Lincoln Rock.

Wildlife N

othing says "wilderness" quite like catching a glimpse of a black bear through the trees or watching an osprey dive into a river for a midday snack. If you are hoping to add wildlife viewings to your North Central Washington adventure, you won't be disappointed. All you need is a little patience and some knowledge on where to look. The region holds an abundance of wildlife for viewing. You can find eagles and osprey along the Columbia River and its tributaries, bighorn sheep along Highway 97A

north of Wenatchee and deer pretty much anywhere. Stay long enough and look hard enough and you might even have a chance to watch the mountain goats that scale the sheer cliffs near the upper Wenatchee River, Entiat and Methow River valleys. Here are some tried-and-true spots for wildlife:

Big game

A short drive north on Highway 97A out of Wenatchee will take you into bighorn sheep country. They are often seen close to the highway. Ride the Lady of the Lake ferry up Lake Chelan and you’ll of-

ten see bighorn sheep and mountain goats on the steep, rocky shore.

Birds

Eagles, osprey, hawks and herons can be spotted up and down the Columbia, Wenatchee, Entiat, Methow and Okanogan rivers. The 11-mile Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail in Wenatchee has lots of birds and areas

to view them. Walla Walla Point Park and Horan Natural Area are good places to start. The Beebe Springs Natural Area along Highway 97, northeast of Chelan, is an easy stop off the road and offers blinds for bird viewing. Racoons and beavers also reside in the area. Leavenworth’s Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island offer

2.5 miles of waterfront trails with opportunities to see osprey, eagles, gray catbirds, hummingbirds, yellow warblers, cedar waxwings and more. A section of the Great Washington State Birding Trail known as the Coulee Corridor stretches between Moses Lake and Grand Coulee in Grant County. Hundreds of bird species can be found along the route, including Sandhill Cranes, Blackcrowned Night Herons and Great Egrets. The Cassimer Bar Wildlife Area, at the confluence of the Columbia and Okanogan rivers, just off of Highway 97, is a great spot to see double-crested cormorants, spotted sandpipers, turkey vultures, warblers, eastern kingbirds, western tanagers, black-headed grosbeaks, and many other birds, along with beavers and amphibians. Visitors should turn off Highway 97 near milepost 264.

Fish

The fish hatcheries in Leavenworth, up the Entiat Valley, at Chelan Falls and at Winthrop are all good spots to see salmon in the late summer and fall, when salmon return. They are easily seen from Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island in Leavenworth.

Waterville World photo/Don Seabrook Taylor Smith charges Billie Chanook, owned by Bryan and Deb Gotham, Colville, out the gate in the start of a horse race at the NCW Fair. They won the close race that started the rodeo events at the fair.

S

ituated on a high plateau amongst fields of gently swaying wheat, Waterville is the perfect place to visit if you want to bask in the quiet of smalltown charm. The town’s biggest event of the year is the North Central Washington Fair. Founded in 1889, the event was originally known as the Waterville Potato Carnival. The name has since changed, but the NCW Fair still embodies everything you’d expect from a county fair. Music, entertainment, food, rodeo and farm animals dominate the event, while other scheduled items — like the Beer Garden and Latino

Day — help to add flavor and flair. This year the fair will run from Wednesday Aug. 26 through Sunday Aug. 30. Waterville is a great jumping-off point for exploring the region. Situated on the Ice Age Floods geological trail, a short drive north will earn you a glimpse of numerous erratics — house-sized boulders dropped by an Ice Age sheet. Look for an amazing collection of erratics on the eye-popping drive through McNeil Canyon Road towards Chelan. Head east on Highway 2 for a view of an historic hillside sentinel — the lovely,

gleaming St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Journey further east and you will arrive at the dramatic Dry Falls State Park. Then turn right and continue south on Highway 17 to take in the beautiful drive along the edge of the Chain Lakes, south to Soap Lake. From there, turn left and head north about 30 miles to Grand Coulee Dam. Visit Dry Falls The largest waterfall known on the earth once cascaded over the sheer basalt cliffs of Dry Falls. These days, the falls themselves are … well … dry, but they still offer plenty of beauty and history to soak in. The 400-foot-high, 3.5-mile-long

precipice dried up about 15,000 years ago, but in its prime it was 10 times the size of Niagara Falls. The Dry Falls were formed during the massive Ice Age floods that coursed through the Columbia Basin. When the Missoula lake's glacial dams crumbled, deep rivers of water crashed over the scalloped edges of the falls at 65 mph. It was this colossal flood that eventually carved out the Channeled Scablands. Today, visitor’s can stand at the edge of the falls or check out the nearby interpretive center to learn about cataclysmic flooding and oozing magma.

World photo/Don Seabrook Rachelle McEwen, Issaquah, listens to Jeremy Wilstein, Park City, Utah, describe his landing approach at Cashmere's Riverside Park. The two both took off from Tumwater Mountain near Leavenworth three hours earlier. They said they reached an altitude of 7,700 feet before finding turbulence trying to get higher using thermals.

Cashmere H

idden in the mountains and framed by orchards, the quaint town of Cashmere is full of simple charms. Spend some time in the

trees and sunlight, riding the white waters of the Wenatchee River, zooming down Devil’s Gulch — known as one of the best mountain biking trails in the state — or hiking one of

the many trails just outside of town. Afterward, you can check out one of Cashmere’s many antique stores or take a tour (and snag some samples) at

the Aplets and Cotlets candy factory. You can also catch the Chelan County Fair and the Wenatchee River Bluegrass Festival when they come through town.

Leavenworth “A burgeoning winery scene has brought a Pinotand-brie refinement to the brats-and-brews style of this Bavarian-inspired village, just east of the Cascades.” — National Geographic Adventure magazine Nestled within the Cascades is a small tourist town, brimming with Old-World charm. Today, the town is filled with people — visitors from all over the world who have gone out of their way to visit a Bavarian-style village in the Northwestern United States. It wasn't always this way, however. The success of Leavenworth Washington is a testament to the hard work, determination and creativity of its early residents. In the early 1960s, Leavenworth was no more than a run-down mill town on the

verge of becoming a ghost town. Rather than sit back and accept their fate, the town leaders came up with a plan — to harness the power of the areas' beautiful, alpine location and draw in tourists from around the globe. The “little village that could” now greets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There’s almost never a weekend without entertainment of some sort — the town has more than two dozen public festivals each year — and if you happen to visit on a day that isn’t filled with festivity, there is still more than enough to keep you occupied.

Things to do

Travel westward on Highway 2 and you will find plenty of fruit stands and wineries. Smallwood’s

Harvest in nearby Peshastin offers a huge petting zoo, a gift shop and fruit stand, and is a must-stop location for anyone with kids in tow. Just down the road, Prey’s Fruit Stand is also worth a visit. For a bit more adventure, take a ride on the whitewater of the Wenatchee River or watch the rapids as they roar through Tumwater Canyon. The dam is a good spot to see kayakers and leaping salmon. If you are interested in rafting, you can find a list of rafting companies on the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce website: leavenworth.org. To the north, Lake Wenatchee’s sparkling waters are perfect for an afternoon of windsurfing or resting on the shore for a picnic. To the south, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness is an excellent spot

for a daytime hike. Grab a permit at the trailhead or check in with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for an overnight permit. If you are looking for something tamer, an easy stroll along Icicle Creek at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is also a great choice. The hatchery releases 1.6 million salmon each year, so they can make the 500-mile journey back to the Pacific Ocean. It is open year-round and offers tours, fish and wildlife viewing, and picnic grounds.

The sculpture is a 1,200-piece outdoor installation created by one of the world’s top glass artists and stands just outside the Sleeping Lady Chapel. Chihuly and his team of glassblowers assembled the 12-foot-high masterwork during the 1996 holiday season.

scenic Icicle Gorge. You can find it about 16 miles up Icicle Road from Leavenworth. Penstock Pipeline Trail, near Leavenworth: The trailhead for this one is a bit unusual — right on top of an old, historic bridge. The trail itself is an easy hike with an unusual start over a his-

toric bridge that crosses the Wenatchee River. If you are lucky, you may spot Coho salmon spawning in the waters below. The three-mile, back-and-forth hike offers great views and fabulous fall colors along the river, and access to some good beaches if the weather is still hot enough for a dip.

cicle Creek Center for the Arts does so much more than concerts. From the very beginning, when it was founded in 1995, Icicle Creek's vision was to create a space "dedicated to excellence in the performing arts, an appreciation of nature and the synergy between the environment and the arts." The Center offers a variety of workshops — from cinema-

tography to Flamenco dancing — as well as annual festivals like Chef Fest and Ale Fest, live concerts, operas, streamed productions from the Met and thought provoking films. The facility itself is rustic, matching perfectly with the surrounding mountains, and is located next door to Sleeping Lady Resort. It’s about three miles up Icicle Road, outside of Leavenworth.

Columbia Basin

Two hikers with their dog walk in March, 2020 past a boulder that was likely left by the Missoula Floods along the Ancient Lakes Trail.

Columbia Basin

tourgrantcounty.com The Columbia Basin is more than just an agricultural powerhouse — the region is a vast network full of unique natural landmarks, historic sites and plenty of options for entertainment. Dams are the life support of the Basin, bringing much-needed water to crops and — along with the region’s many wind farms — providing a low-cost power source

that serves clients around the world. More than 670,000 acres of the Columbia Basin are irrigated and the region is known for growing fruit, onions, beans, potatoes and more. Catch a concert at the Gorge: Considered one of the “most scenic concert venues in the world,” according to Tour Grant County’s website, the Gorge Amphitheatre plays host to worldrenowned perform-

ers — and of course, spectacular views. Seated on the lip of the Columbia River, it is a concert venue like no other, with seating for 20,000 and breathtaking views of sheer basalt cliffs.

Things to do:

Attend Farmer Consumer Awareness Day: Head to Quincy the second Saturday in September for the annual Farmer Consumer Awareness Day and enjoy live entertainment, arts

and crafts, a cook-off and local delicacies, among many other things. Check out Ancient Lake Falls near Quincy: The Ancient Lakes Loop Trail is a popular hiking spot for adventurers. The 4.6 miles of trail is set in a dramatic landscape of deep coulees and volcanic buttes. At the end of your hike, you will be rewarded by a desert oasis — the Ancient Lakes and falls. The area is also

a perfect spot for mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding and hunting. Take a mud bath on the shores of Soap Lake: The mineralrich water of Soap Lake has drawn tourists since the early 1900s for its reported medicinal properties. It is said that rival tribes would call a truce when visiting the area to bathe. While you may not have to call a truce with other swimmers,

you can still enjoy a rejuvenating dip or lather yourself in frothy mud. Get up close with a giant wind turbine: Chances are, you’ve seen wind farms while driving through Washington state. But you may not realize just how big those turbines really

are. If you visit Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center on Whiskey Dick Mountain, you will have a chance to get up close and personal with one of the best clean, renewable energy producers around. Sip a little wine: Washington is known for its wine

and Grant County produces some of the best of it. If you are into wine, you won’t want to miss the Jones of Washington tasting room in Quincy — or any of the other wineries and microbreweries located throughout the region. Hang 10 on the surfing

simulator: Moses Lake’s Surf ‘n’ Slide Water Park, with its surfing simulator, two 200-foot-long water slides, and 300-foot Lazy River is a must-visit for any water lover. Live the island life at Crescent Bar: At Crescent Bar you’ll find a resort, golf,

Check out the stampeding metal ponies: Wild Horse Monument sits on the crest of a hill roughly two miles east of the Vantage Bridge. Known as “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies,” the collection of sculptures is visible from the freeway, but curious visitors can also take a quarter-mile hike to view the ponies up close. Wanapum Heritage Center: Located next to Priest Rapids Dam about five miles south of Mattawa, the Heritage Center teaches visitors about the history and culture of the Wanapun people. It is temporarily closed until further notice. Lake Lenore Caves: Explore the shallow caves on the shores of Lenore Lake and just north of Soap Lakes above Highway 17. Ephrata’s Sage-N-Sun Festival: If you are visiting Grant County on the second weekend of June, the SageN-Sun Festival promises a good time. The familyfriendly event features activities, parades, live music, and good food.

Ginko Petrified Forest State Park: Check out the petrified wood — Washington’s official state gem — at Ginko Petrified Forest State Park. The park is known for its rare, fossilized Ginko trees and features more than 30 varieties of petrified wood. The Feathers: Watch rock climbers scale other-worldly basalt columns at the Feathers, a popular rock-climbing spot west of George near the rim of Frenchman Coulee.

World photo/Don Seabrook With a view to Lake Chelan, Rachel Robison goes over a subject in math with her 5th and 6th graders at Lakeside Park in Chelan. Students of Roots Community School have been going to classes all day at the park to help with social distancing regulations due to Covid regulations.

Lake Chelan L

ake Chelan is everything you could want from a summer resort town. Sandy beaches? Check. Over 300 days of sunlight for outdoor recreation? Check. Awardwinning wineries and a quaint downtown? Check and check. Known as “tsill-anne,” or “deep-water” by local Native American tribes, Lake Chelan is the third-deepest lake in North America. It is the perfect place to go boat-

ing, swimming, or fishing. You can also hike, bike or sun-bathe along the lake’s edge. Downtown, you can stroll past Chelan’s many restaurants, bars and shops. Don Morse Park is an easy walking distance from downtown and is among the most popular spots on the lake. The park’s 2,000 feet of waterfront and sandy beaches is a great place to buy a snack, rent a boat, play volleyball or take your kids to the playground.

71 Chelan Riverwalk Park, just off downtown, has a mile-long scenic loop trail and is an easyway to get to the Woodin Avenue Bridge that crosses the Chelan River by historic Campbell’s Resort. You'll also find there a part of the original Lady of the Lake ferryboat. At 60 years old, the 65-foot-long Lady was salvaged in 2001 and restored seven years later. Her pilot house — complete with captain’s wheel — sits at the edge of the park as a monument, gazing out across the lake she once patrolled. Other things to do around Lake Chelan

tehekin: “A small settlement wedged between fjord-like Lake Chelan and the jagged eastern slopes of the Cascades, Stehekin has several comfortable lodges, an excellent bakery and, best of all, relatively few visitors.” – New York Times Stehekin is a town like no other. No roads lead to Stehekin — in fact, the only way to reach it is by boat, plane, or on foot. It is a unique community that embodies what it means to be secluded in all the best ways. the noise of modern life, Stehekin could just be the retreat you've been hoping for. Perhaps the easiest way to arrive is to take the ferry; the Lady of the Lake makes daily trips between Stehekin and Chelan from May 1 to Oct. 16. Once you get there, Stehekin offers lodging, food, camping, fishing, boating and wildlife.

Okanogan County O

kanogan is the largest county in Washington state, but at just under 8 people per square mile, it certainly doesn't win any awards for population density. Don't let that dissuade you from a visit, however. Okanogan is the place to be if you are looking for natural beauty, including its high-desert landscapes and sweeping fields of wildflowers backed by sheer, mountainous cliffs.

Brewster and Pateros

Gamble Sands is a links-style golf course set among sagebrush and parcels of agriculture near Brewster.

These twin cities on the Columbia River are a fishing mecca. Steelheaders flock to Pateros to fish at the mouth of the Methow River, and to Brewster for the salmon returns. Beyond fishing, the nearby Gamble Sands Golf Course is one of the best new courses in the nation, according to Golf Digest magazine. Brewster’s Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and fireworks on the Columbia River, is also worth a look. In Pateros the annual Apple Pie Jamboree on the third weekend of July is a great chance to pick up a slice while soaking in the local scene. Just north of Brewster, stop by the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center for a great way to spend an afternoon. Built in 1911, the center was originally an American fur trading outpost in Washington state. It has since been given back

Okanogan’s iconic county courthouse is almost castlelike, and around town, you may spot billboards featuring photographs by Japanese immigrant Frank Matsura of turn-of-the-century pioneers and American Indians. The Okanogan County Historical Museum has hundreds more early photos, along with a building full of historical displays. The town also hosts the annual Okanogan Days on the first Saturday in June and the Okanogan Harvest Festival on the first Saturday in October.

Two large reservoirs border Conconully, making it the perfect spot for fishermen to try their luck. The lakes are filled with rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and even some kokanee salmon in the lower lake.

Various other events are scheduled throughout the summer. Between the town’s chamber of commerce and its Community Cultural Center, there are enough events to cover nearly every weekend. Lake Osoyoos, a 14-mile lake that lies across the Canadian border, is known for its warm water and attracts water skiers, swimmers, fishermen and boaters.
