“Little did they know that their story would become the inspiration for a local event-- the Falling Cow Country Wine Festival.”
I
Above: Children enjoy yard games at the Falling Cow Country Wine Festival. Below: Country dancing provides lots of fun for all ages.
t wasn’t exactly fun for Charles and Linda Everson when a cow fell from a 200-foot cliff onto the roof of their Buick in November of 2007. The Eversons were fortunate to survive the episode and they were able to get help at the nearby Lake Chelan Winery. Little did they know that their story would become the inspiration for a local event-- the Falling Cow Country Wine Festival. The twelfth annual celebration will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. June 15 at the winery. Participants look forward to something of a reenactment of the original falling cow as a helicopter flies over the event and drops toy cows with parachutes over the crowd. Event-goers show their spirit by scrambling to take one home as a souvenir. In the meantime, there is plenty to do at the Falling Cow Festival. Guests may purchase food from both the barbecue in the vineyard or a fast food festival tent. Plenty of beverages, including new Falling Cow wines are also available. In terms of activities, live music will be provided this year by the Lake Boys. There are also line dancing lessons, a photo booth, raffles and great prizes. The event is very family-friendly. Kids activities include face painting and a farm animal petting zoo. Kären Lombard, community liaison for Wapato Point Cellars and Lake Chelan Winery, described the event as a “down-home country party for the family.” Tickets to the event are in the form of a commemorative Falling Cow button. These can be pre-purchased at the winery for a reduced price up until the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased online through June 14. General admission is $10 and wine club member admission is $8. Kids under 12 are free. Those who purchase tickets online can pick their button up at the tasting bar through June 14, or in a will-call line at the event. Admission on June 15 is $13 ($11 for wine club members). To purchase tickets or for more information, see the website at LakeChelanWinery.com.

A SPARK OF LIGHT JODI PICOULT
LABYRINTH OF THE SPIRITS CARLOS RUIZ ZAFON
THE REAL LOLITA SARAH WEINMAN
Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the very first time. Drawing upon extensive investigations, legal documents, public records, and interviews with remaining relatives, Sally Horner’s story echoes the stories of countless girls and women who never had the chance to speak for themselves. By diving deeper in the publication history of Lolita and restoring Sally to her rightful place in the lore of the novel’s creation, The Real Lolita casts a new light on the dark inspiration for a modern classic.
The internationally acclaimed, New York Times bestselling author returns to the magnificent universe he constructed in his bestselling novels The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game, and The Prisoner of Heaven in this riveting series finale--a heart-pounding thriller and nail-biting work of suspense which introduces a sexy, seductive new heroine whose investigation shines a light on the dark history of Franco’s Spain. In this unforgettable final volume of Ruiz Zafón’s cycle of novels set in the universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, beautiful and enigmatic Alicia Gris, with the help of the Sempere family, uncovers one of the most shocking conspiracies in all Spanish history.
The warm fall day starts like any other at the Center-a women’s reproductive health services clinic--its staff offering care to anyone who passes through its doors. Then, in late morning, a desperate and distraught gunman bursts in and opens fire, taking all inside hostage. After rushing to the scene, Hugh McElroy, a police hostage negotiator, sets up a perimeter and begins making a plan to communicate with the gunman. As his phone vibrates with incoming text messages he glances at it and, to his horror, finds out that his fifteen-year-old daughter, Wren, is inside the clinic. One of the most fearless writers of our time, Jodi Picoult tackles a complicated issue in this gripping and nuanced novel. How do we balance the rights of pregnant women with the rights of the unborn they carry? What does it mean to be a good parent? A Spark of Light will inspire debate, conversation . . . and, hopefully, understanding.

iller’s Lake Chelan Auto Museum will begin its second season on June 21. The museum, located at 20 Blue Water Lane in Chelan, welcomed 700 visitors last season, and owner Leo Miller is well-pleased with its success. Miller, a resident of the Chelan Valley since 1946, has always loved cars, and has been collecting them as a hobby for the past 25 years. He was talked into opening the museum by a friend, and worked together with friends and family members for about six months to set it up. There are four buildings in the museum, and they are filled with 70 classic cars, and a lot of memorabilia, much of it auto-related. Miller said that he and his wife Polly collected the memorabilia over the years, and lots of people have donated items to the collection.
Asked what he has found most rewarding about the museum, Miller said that he likes the memories that vintage cars and memorabilia evoke and loves to hear the stories of those who visit. “Everybody always has a story if they like cars,” Miller said. Beginning June 21, the museum will be open from 12 to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Miller also welcomes groups of 25 or more to hold special events at the museum. Arrangements can be made by emailing: events@millersautomuseum.com. Admission is by donation. For more information, call the museum at (509)679-6389.
