D
uring the COVID-19 pandemic much of our attention has been focused on the negative repercussions of the pandemic to the economy, and especially to local businesses. Yet whether they had to scramble to adapt, or whether their original business model naturally fit the situation, some Chelan-area restaurants and wineries have been weathering the pandemic storm well. One example is Siren Song Winery. Manager Nolan Weber said he would describe the experience of adapting the business to the reality of the pandemic as challenging, but also fun. “Creativity pushes us through this whole scenario,” Weber said. Weber said that Siren Song staff members are making it their mission to give customers some-
thing of the winery experience in each takeout box. For Siren Song, takeout is a completely new direction. They had to revisit their menu and come up with options that do well as takeout items. Some of their most popular have been the herb roasted salmon caesar and the chicken cobb salad. Their artisan pizzas have also been a hit. The winery helps customers choose wines that match well with their orders. Weber said that business has remained quite steady since the winery closed one week before the statewide order. The winery has expanded its marketing tools and tapped into some new customer demographics, Weber said. April Williams, owner and manager of Lake Chelan Trading
Company, which runs Lake Chelan Winery and Wapato Point Cellars, said that restaurants at the two wineries moved to five days a week from seven during the first few months of the pandemic. They recently have been able to open back up seven days a week. The Winemaker’s Grill, which is located at Wapato Point Cellars, began to provide dine in options beginning with the announcement that the county had moved to Phase 1.5 of the governor’s phased opening plan. She said the staff members have been supportive and adaptable to all of the changes and regulations, and the customer response has been enthusiastic. “If we were allowed to hug, we would be hugging,” Williams said. Both wineries are offering wine tasting kits, with glasses and
FOOD tastes for two people. Lake Chelan Winery also has a cheese shop that offers a signature plate in a to-go container. Wine and cheese tasting can be enjoyed on the premises or at home. Madison Mackenzie, manager of Local Myth Pizza, said that the restaurant has been able to remain open throughout the pandemic, though they did close on Sundays for a period of time. Now they are back open from Tuesday through Sunday. They started online ordering, and that has worked very well. Mackenzie said she thinks it is something that the restaurant will keep in place even after the pandemic. People love to get their orders and then walk over to Riverwalk Park to eat them on picnic tables or blankets. The restaurant provides all of the paper plates and utensils. Mackenzie said that Local Myth had to lay off a few employees at first, and reduce employee hours, but now they are getting back to normal staffing. According to Amy Mack, owner of the Lakeview Drive In, COVID-19 has actually sped up business
somewhat. The drive in, located next to Don Morse Park, has been open since 1957, and has been in Mack’s family for 36 years. The drive-in is all takeout, so it was perfectly placed for this epidemic. Lakeview is a great place to pick up all-American fast food made from high quality ingredients.

SOCIAL DISTANCING THE NATURAL WAY These are photos of biking the Echo Ridge Trail system courtesy of Chelan Ranger District, Paul Willard.

re you running out of things to do in and around your home? Are you looking for some fresh scenery? Fortunately, opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Chelan area abound. Why not try a local outing to explore the natural beauty of this area? Hikes are great because you need nothing more than a good pair of tennis shoes or hiking boots, sunscreen and a picnic lunch. As for every activity nowadays, there are some special precautions to keep in mind as you enjoy the wilderness. The Washington Trails Association website outlines some of these. Go with your own family group. Don’t forget your face mask, so you can cover up if you end up in a situation where you are close to other hikers. Give people plenty of room when you pass and avoid crowded areas, such as popular viewpoints. Bring along your hand sanitizer.
Dana Kimbell, visitor services information assistant at the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Chelan Ranger District had some specific recommendations for trailheads that are close to Chelan and easy to access. The Echo Ridge area is a great place to explore by foot or mountain bike. This trail system offers a large range of lengths of excursions and there are maps of the trails at the trail heads and junctions along the way. One especially fun trail at Echo Ridge is the Outback Trail, which starts from the North Junction Trailhead. This is a loop around a small mountain, with the option of hiking up a spur trail called Mallory’s to reach the highest point of the Echo Ridge system. Total length is about 6 miles round trip if you hike to the top. Elevation gain to the summit is about 700 feet. Maps of the Echo Ridge Area can be downloaded on the Okanogan-Wenatchee Na-

tional Forest website at www. fs.usda.gov/recarea/okawen/ recarea/?recid=57199. From Chelan take Highway 150 west 1.5 miles to Boyd Road. Follow the signs to Echo Ridge, which is located seven miles from the turnoff. There is no charge during the summer months. Another easy and close hiking or walking option is the Riverwalk Loop, a one-mile paved loop in downtown Chelan. The Chelan River Reach Trail continues from the Riverwalk Loop, dropping down next to the Chelan River. The total trail length is three miles, with the last 1.1 mile being a gravel trail. There is parking for this gravel portion at Gorge Road. If you are looking for a good workout, the Pot Peak Trail may be a good option. This trail is 9.5 miles roundtrip, with a steep elevation gain on the way up. You will have a good view of Lake Chelan along the way. Pot Peak is also good for advanced mountain bikers.
To access the trailhead take Forest Service Road 5900 for about three miles before taking a left onto Forest Service Road 8410. The trailhead is on the right about one-half mile from the junction. If you are interested in cycling, you may also want to check out The Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce map of Lake Chelan area bike routes available at LakeChelan.com. Suggested routes range from a one-mile downtown route to an 18-mile Manson route. The routes were designed by people who bike regularly in the Lake Chelan area. The longer routes reflect the challenging terrain, changes in topography and changes in elevation of the Century Challenge, an event that usually takes place in June. All of the routes have been tested for safety and good road conditions. More information about the trails is available through the Chelan Ranger District.

Christina Clancy has written a beautiful story of family and the bonds that can be broken and somehow repaired again. “Majumdar’s suspenseful narrative holds a mirror up to society at large, reflecting the lies people tell themselves to rationalize sacrificing morality for personal gain. Unintended consequences from an impulsive social media post NCWBusinessDirectory.com explode against a backdrop of deep economic insecurities and centuries-old prejudices. A searing debut, this novel is timely and timeless. It packs a punch way above its weight. Brilliant.” – Lisa Johnson, Penguin Bookshop, Sewickley, PA

They quickly come to realize that true friendship depends on nothing but a caring heart and the willingness and courage to be open to others. Kissing in the Keys: When the tide brings in a wave of truth, nothing will ever be the same again — a new season of “Siesta Key” premieres Tuesday, June 16, on MTV. The sexy reality drama follows a group of friends as they party on the gorgeous beaches of Siesta Key. Season 3 was originally set to air earlier this year, but the show’s schedule was interrupted (like everything else) by the global pandemic. Now, the show is hitting MTV just in time for summer, and the only thing hotter than the weather is the budding romance. “Siesta Key,” which originally premiered in July 2017, was inspired by the success of “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.” This season
