Chelan Parasail and Watersports, located in downtown Chelan on Woodin Avenue, is waiting until Chelan County enters Phase 2 of the governor’s Phased Opening Plan so that it can open parasailing for the season. According to office manager Emily Mudd, the business has been much busier than had been expected given the pandemic. She said it has been about as busy as an average year.

The company has cruising boats, speed boats and razor pontoons, which can go faster than a typical pontoon. They also have “big black,” a 38-foot pontoon boat that can fit 22 people. In most cases it is necessary to reserve the boats in advance. Ski-Doo jet skis are offered on a first come first serve basis. Look out for the parasailing option coming soon. Lake Shores Watercraft and Boat Rentals, also on Woodin Avenue, offers Yamaha WaveRunners, open bow ski boats and a variety of boating toys, including singlerider tubes, skis, kneeboards, wakeboards, paddleboards and kayaks. A boat ride or a day playing on the water sounds like a perfect solution to social distancing blues.

LOCAL APPLE INDUSTRY FRESHENS UP WITH CIDER KAREN LARSEN

he Lake Chelan area has an apple industry that is over a century old, but it wasn’t until about a decade ago that the area developed a cider making industry. Today the area has about half a dozen companies that produce artisan ciders from local apples. These are made in a variety of flavors that stimulate the palate and sense of curiosity. Many of the cideries are located on family orchards that have a long history in the area. An example of this is Steelhead Cider, founded by Ben Barnes. After graduating from Washington State University, Barnes started learning to make cider in small batches. He saw that the cider market was growing and decided that it was a good opportunity to jump in. He developed Steelhead Cider in 2013 and started selling his first product in 2015. One of the aspects of cider making that is the most attractive to Barnes is the variety of flavors and possibilities. It is an intensely creative process. “There’s no rules; everything is

new and fresh and unique,” Barnes said. Steelhead Cider current flavors include “Furious George Ginger,” “Peargatory” (vanilla pear), “Chimera Cherry Apple,” “Backroads Boysenberry,” and “Hopped Habanero.” Each cider is the fruit of an extensive creative process that Barnes said begins by getting together with friends “and trying things out.” Ciders range from “dry” with very little or no sugar content to fruity, which are diluted with fruit juice after fermentation and have a sweet flavor. Each compliments different foods. Barnes said that a good rule of thumb is that dry ciders go well with rich foods, fruity ciders go well with lighter fare and spiced ciders go well with seafood. Steelhead Cider’s “Taphouse” tasting room in Chelan is currently closed, but the company is available for bottle and growler pickup and local delivery. Most American cider varieties are brewed with eating apples, but more and more cider makers are looking to Europe for traditional

cider apple varieties. These have a sharp, bitter taste created by tannins and can be compared to well-aged red wines. One company that has made

extensive use of the traditional varieties is Rootwood Cider Company of Manson founded in 2015 on a century-old family orchard. This company makes most of its cider from apples grown on site, and the orchard grows 10 cider-specific varieties. Rootwood Cider Company has curbside pickup available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Washington Gold Cider was also born out of a family orchard. It’s cider house is an old apple packing shed built in the 1930s. The cider house tap room is located at Lake Chelan Winery. The company makes five flavors of cider: Original, Lake Chelan Heritage, Golden Delicious, Cherry and Northwest Raspberry. ChelanCraft Cider is a cider company not attached to an orchard. Flavors include Blueberry and Apple, Cherry Vanilla, Ginger Pear, Peach Apricot, and Apple Lemon. Beginning on June 25, they will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Wednesday.
