LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK
Top: Three varieties of Steelhead Cider before a Lake Chelan backdrop. Bottom: Hayley McGinty pours Steelhead Cider at a Seattle cider summit.
The Lake Chelan area is an important production area for Washington apples. Until recently, however, it was not a place where many people were making and selling hard cider. That has changed in the last decade. Ben Barnes, the founder of Steelhead Cider, is a 30-year-old Manson native who grew up on an orchard and developed a passion for cider making. After graduating from Washington State University, Barnes started learning to make cider in small batches. He saw that the cider market was growing and decided that it was a good opportunity to jump in. He developed Steelhead Cider in 2013 and started selling his first product in 2015. One of the aspects of cider making that is the most attractive to Barnes is the variety of flavors and possibilities. It is an intensely creative process. “There’s no rules; everything is new and fresh and unique,” Barnes said. Steelhead Cider current flavors include “Furious George Ginger,” “Peargatory” (vanilla pear), “Chimera Cherry Apple,” “Backroads Boysenberry,” and “Hopped Habanero.” Each cider is the fruit of an extensive creative process that Barnes said begins by getting together with friends “and trying things out.” Ciders range from “dry” with very little or no sugar content to fruity, which are diluted with fruit juice after fermentation and have a sweet flavor. Each compliments different foods. Barnes said that a good rule of thumb is that dry ciders go well with rich foods, fruity ciders go well with lighter fare and spiced ciders go well with seafood. It is clear that for Barnes cider is not just a business, but a passion. Tasting and evaluating cider is a favorite pastime. He regularly attends tasting events statewide and in Oregon to sample what other companies are producing. Not everyone can discriminate well between different cider products. Barnes can. When he tries something really good it inspires him to
think what he can do to bring his own product another notch up. Most American cider varieties are made with eating apples, but more and more cider makers are looking to Europe for traditional cider apple varieties. These have a sharp, bitter taste created by tannins and can be compared to well-aged red wines. The Barnes family orchard planted some of these varieties in 2014 for use in Steelhead Ciders. Barnes feels that it makes sense for an orchard region such as Lake Chelan to produce cider. It is a way that a locally-sourced product can be turned into a locally produced value-added good. It reduces waste in the orchard industry because juice-grade apples can go into producing high-quality ciders. For now, Steelhead Cider is not only produced from all-locally grown apples, it is also sold locally. Barnes said he may try to expand in the future, but for now if you want Steelhead Cider, Chelan County is the place to find it. Two years ago Barnes opened his own tasting room—The Taphouse--located at 114 E. Woodin Ave. in Chelan. That, of course, is the most ideal place to taste Steelhead Cider’s creations. Other Cider brands that have risen up in the Lake Chelan Area include Washington Gold Cider. Like Steelhead Cider, Washington Gold was born out of a family orchard. Washington Gold has a tasting room at Lake Chelan Winery, 3519 Highway 150 in Chelan. Rootwood Cider Company of Manson was founded on a 100-year-old family orchard and produces most of its ciders from its own apples. The orchard grows ten varieties of cider apples. There is a tasting room in downtown Manson at 45 Wapato Way, and another at the production facility. ChelanCraft Cider is a cider company not attached to an orchard. They welcome guests to tour the cidery and see the process of how cider is made. They are located at 804 Manson Highway in Chelan.

elsey Guy and her fiancé Shaimoom Newaz took a break from the fast-paced life of Los Angeles during the winter of 2016 and took out a short-term rental lease in Chelan. It wasn’t long before the short-term lease seemed a bit too short. The couple renewed the rental term several times and began to wonder what they could do to earn a living here. A friend from the entertainment industry came to visit them and he was baffled as the three walked the streets on a winter evening. “What do people do here at night?” he asked the couple. They explained that there was a movie theatre, a couple bars and some occasional concerts, and that most people stayed home with their families. The friend, Jesse Shapiro, had worked at the Hollywood Improv and was confident that he could get talented comedians to Chelan. “The next thing you knew we were writing a business plan,” Guy said. The group decided right away that “Apple” should be a part of their name since Chelan is wellknown for apples. Then they asked themselves what kind of apple a comedy company would be. They decided it would have to be a rotten one and the name “Rotten Apple” was chosen. They began to pitch their business plan to a variety of local venues and Campbell’s Resort jumped on the idea. Weekly comedy shows started in May of 2018 and the summer blew the newly formed Rotten Apple crew away. They thought it would be a tourist thing, and tourists did come, but so did locals. It seems like they had hit on a void in the community. For the entire summer Rotten Apple offered five shows a week with 60 total shows. Thirty comedians came and 3,500 tickets were sold. “It was beautiful to see that we were providing people with joy,” Guy said. Because of local enthusiasm, the shows were continued once a month through the winter and these all sold out. The group started its second summer season in May. They continue to bring stars—those who either have their own HBO, Comedy Central or Netflix special or are close to it. During the Lake Chelan Arts Festival Rotten Apple teamed up with the Chelan Chamber of Commerce to provide comedy in the Ruby Theatre by Gina Brillon. They have even branched out to providing comedy at the Red Lion Hotel in Wenatchee. Guy said that she and Newaz are members of the Chambers of Commerce of both Chelan and Wenatchee and believe strongly in working together with other business owners to build the economic viability of the cities. They have goals to work to enhance festivals and to incorporate other types of performing arts. So, what should one expect from a Rotten Apple comedy night? Expect to walk into a uniquely decorated comedy room. Also expect some special extras—like cocktails with gummy worms and apple slices. And, of course, expect high quality comedy that will have you coming back for more. Check out the Rotten Apple website at rottenapplepresents.com for information on this summer’s schedule.
