INSIDE STORY

KAREN LARSEN

LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK

A crowd of boating enthusiasts will descend on Lake Chelan July 12 and 13 for the 12th annual Poker Run organized by the Lake Chelan Boating Club. Registered boaters will gather in Manson at 6 p.m., and this is a good chance for spectators to check out the participating boats. This includes boats of all types and sizes as the boating club has worked since 2007 to attract a broad range of boats to the event. On the morning of July 13, the participants will have breakfast at the Lake Chelan Boating Club. The Poker Run itself will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Mill Bay Boat Launch. The boaters will travel to five stops on the lake to get envelopes containing each of five poker cards. At the last stop the envelopes will be turned in to staff. Results will be tallied and the winners determined. The group will have lunch in Lucerne and then travel back to the boating club.

INSIDE STORY

Lake Chelan This Week

Thursday, July 11, 2019

“Registered boaters will gather in Manson at 6 P.M., And this is a good chance for spectators to check out the participating boats.” Dinner will be served at the club and afterwards there will be a “Beach Party” theme costume contest. This will be followed by the announcement of the Poker Run winners. Last year six prizes were awarded ranging from $1,281 for a full house to $61 for the worst hand. There is also a 50/50 raffle associated with the event. The raffle had a payout of $1,425 in 2018. For those not participating in the Poker Run, there will be a lot of chances to watch the boats from shore during the day. Many participants will hang around on July 14 for an extra day of boating on the lake. The Poker Run is the main fundraiser for the boating club. Proceeds from the event are used to support the organization’s service projects, including a boating club scholarship fund, boater education courses, boater safety classes and Washington State Marine Patrol training classes. They also help support a range of community events and organizations not related to boating.

RIVERWALK’S SUMMER PICKS 1 3 Recursion by Blake Crouch

The Snakes by Sadie Jones

Bea and Dan, recently married, rent out their tiny flat to escape London for a few precious months. Driving through France they visit Bea’s dropout brother Alex at the hotel he runs in Burgundy. Disturbingly, they find him all alone and the ramshackle hotel deserted, apart from the nest of snakes in the attic. When Alex and Bea’s parents make a surprise visit, Dan can’t understand why Bea never wanted him to know them; Maybe Bea’s ashamed of him, or maybe she regrets the secrets she’s been keeping. Tragedy strikes suddenly, brutally, and in its aftermath the family is stripped back to its rotten core, and now neither Bea nor Alex can escape…

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo

When Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, they are blithely ignorant of all that's to come. By 2016, their four radically different adult daughters are each in a state of unrest. Above it all, the daughters share the lingering fear that they will never find a love quite like their parents’. As the novel moves through the tumultuous year following the arrival of Jonah Bendt-given up by one of the daughters in a closed adoption fifteen years before--we are shown the rich and varied tapestry of the Sorensons' past: years marred by adolescence, infidelity, and resentment, but also the transcendent moments of joy that make everything else worthwhile.

Memory makes reality. That’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. Neuroscientist Helena Smith has dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious moments of our pasts. As Barry searches for the truth, he comes faceto-face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it, only he and Helena, working together, will stand a chance at defeating it.

On Earth Were Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity.
