t’s hard to get more summer than a day at a waterpark. Whether your idea of water fun means meandering down a river on an intertube, racing through a twisted water course, or something in between, Slidewaters has something for you. Slidewaters is open every day
of the summer from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission provides a day’s worth of fun, and for those who think they’d like to make a habit of it, season passes are available. Slidewaters attractions include Lazy River, an over 500-foot river with play features along the way; Thunder Rapids, a more adventur-
ous river run; Downhill Racer, for those who want to add competition to the day; Bug-A-Boo and Squirt Gun designed for young children and their parents; Whitewater and Run Amuck, for the child’s next step; “The Mains”, a group of four classic waterslides; Purple Haze, a slide that gets you in the dark for additional thrills; Tube Blaster, an exciting tube slide; and Aqua Zoo, an area for young children with two animal slides and a mushroom waterfall. There is a 60-person hot tub for relaxing. Slidewaters has life jackets and flotation devices available, so the only thing patrons need to bring is towels. There is a grill and a refreshment stand at the park, but those who want to bring their own food are welcome to do so. Just don’t bring anything packaged in glass, any alcoholic beverages or any hard-sided coolers. There are lots of areas of green grass for setting up a base for the day as well as picnic tables. Those who want to enjoy some fun on land for a while may want to try out the sand volleyball court. The grounds are surrounded by the beautiful shrub-steppe hills of Lake Chelan, with a view of the lake below and Cascade mountains in the distance. According to shift leader Andrew Beckett there was an additional process of opening this year, which included setting up hand sanitizing stations, training staff on how to minimize the risks related to COVID-19, putting up public health signage and installing plexiglass to

keep person-to-person contact at a minimum. The park usually opens on Memorial Day, but was not able to open until June 22 this year.
Staff members and guests are asked questions about their health before they enter, and there are frequent reminders throughout the park to maintain social distancing. “We want the patrons to be able to come and have a good time with their families while still feeling plenty safe here,” Beckett said. Beckett said that the park is allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity this season. He said that it has been running at about 36% capacity, which represents a significant reduction in numbers compared to the typical season. For the past 12 years Slidewaters has been owned by cousins Burke and Robert Bordner, who are residents of Chelan.

ince 2014, Lake Chelan Helicopters has been helping people enjoy scenic Lake Chelan from above with the help of a helicopter named Whirly. The company offers a number of packages of a variety of lengths around Lake Chelan and further afield. Custom flights are also available. Owner Dale England started out as a recreational helicopter pilot,
and then went into business drying cherries for orchardists before developing the charter aspect of his helicopter business. According to England, helicopter rides are special because helicopters have larger windows than planes, so visibility is really good. Also, the helicopter can hover to let the passengers get a better look at the views that most catch their eyes.
“If there’s something they want to see we can slow way down,” England said. The ride is also less bumpy than a plane ride, so it is rare for someone to get sick, England said. “It’s just a different feeling,” he said. England said that people who are afraid of heights often are surprised that they are not afraid when they go up in a helicopter. They
are in an enclosed capsule, with a competent pilot and all safety measures in place, and they are able to relax. Lake Chelan Helicopters offers a number of set options, including trips above the lower Chelan Valley in thirty minute increments, hourlong tours of Stehekin, Methow Valley or Leavenworth, a Stehekin Valley Ranch dinner option and a Lake Chelan Wine Valley tour. All rides are for three people up to a total of 500 pounds. England said July 9 that business was slow at the beginning of the summer due to the pandemic, but has been picking up in the last few weeks. The helicopter is sterilized between each group of passengers and CDC precautions are followed. If you are ready for a fresh look at the Lake Chelan Valley, you may want to look into the options available at lakechelanhelicopters.com.

GOOD BOOK READS
1
– Recommendations courtesy of Riverwalk Books –
The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennett
“Brit Bennett’s second novel broke my heart. She doesn’t shy away from the sadness inherent in each character’s life, yet she left me feeling better for having met all of them. I read The Vanishing Half with a sense of hope, despite my dread that terrible things might befall the characters. Desiree and Stella’s story unfolds with a deft delicateness in a book that is astonishingly accomplished and sweeping, and yet so very intimate.”

The Girl from Widow Hills
“How do you cope when the whole world knows your name and acts like they own a bit of your trauma story? Maybe you change your name, like Olivia does, and try to make a break from your past. Until one night when you find yourself sleepwalking. Like you did 20 years ago. And suddenly not only has your past caught up with you, it is legit stalking you. Now your secret is out, but there are even more deadly secrets hiding in the shadows. The final twists in this story are so sharp, you’ll check yourself for stab wounds! Another fantastic, twisty, thrilling read from Megan Miranda!”

Lady in the Lake
“I continue to be in awe of Laura Lippman’s ability to write novels that are so much more than mysteries. Lady in the Lake is, of course, a wonderful mystery with twists and turns and surprises —nothing is predictable. But it is also a beautiful character study and a sensitive look at the desire to have a meaningful life and how ambition can be motivating but also blinding. I loved the multiple voices in the novel— Laura’s characters are never perfect and therefore come across as real people with real needs. I have no doubt that Lady in the Lake will be a huge success.”
