Where Should We Eat
The Lake Chelan Valley is one of the most scenic parts of Washington. Its orchard and vineyard dotted hills, the long sparkling glacier-carved lake and surrounding mountains provide breathtaking views. The seat of a bicycle is a very rewarding platform for taking in these views and getting to know the country firsthand. In terms of road trips there is something for everyone, from short, flat trips near town, to challenging day trips with a good deal of elevation gain. If you plan to visit Stehekin, cycling is an ideal way to get around. The Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce has produced a map of Lake Chelan area bike routes available at LakeChelan.com. Suggested routes range from a one-mile downtown route to an 18-mile Manson route. The routes were designed by people who bike regularly in the Lake Chelan area. The longer routes reflect the challenging terrain, changes in topography and changes in elevation of the Century Challenge, an event that takes place each June. All routes have been tested for safety and good road conditions.
One of the great ways to see the valley is from the Upper and Lower Echo Ridge trails. This 25-mile long system is a favorite of snowmobiles, snowshoers and cross country skiers during the winter months. They are beautiful in a different way in the summer. The trail system is located about 10 miles from Chelan and Manson and is closed to motorized traffic. Trails are well-marked and maps are regularly posted. Recently 9.5 miles of new trail at Echo Ridge has been constructed by Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and the Chelan Ranger District. Other mountain biking trails are Pot Peak (9.5 miles), Devil’s Backbone (13 miles), and Stormy Mountain (1.5 miles). Pot Peak involves a climb of 6,500 feet and then a well-earned descent of 5,000 feet on the other side. The Devil’s Backbone trail goes along a crest and provides beautiful views. Stormy Mountain will give you a scenic drive to the trailhead and a good, strong uphill climb to the mountain top. All of these trails are best for experienced riders. More information about the trails is available at the Chelan Ranger District.

The Gone Dead by Chanelle Benz Inventive, gritty, and openhearted, The Gone Dead is an astonishing debut novel about race, justice, and memory that lays bare the long-concealed wounds of a family and a country. Billie James’ inheritance isn’t much: a little money and a shack in the Mississippi Delta. The house once belonged to her father, a renowned black poet who died unexpectedly when Billie was four years old. Though Billie was there when the accident happened, she has no memory of that day—and she hasn’t been back to the South since. Thirty years later, Billie returns but her father’s home. As Billie encounters the locals, she hears a strange rumor: that she herself went missing on the day her father died. As the mystery intensifies, she finds out that this forgotten piece of her past could put her in danger

Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand Four siblings experience the drama, intrigue, and upheaval of a summer when everything changed, in the NYT bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand’s first historical novel. It’s 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. Every year the children have looked forward to spending the summer at their grandmother’s historic home in downtown Nantucket. But like so much else in America, nothing is the same. As the summer heats up, Ted Kennedy sinks a car in Chappaquiddick, man flies to the moon, and Jessie and her family experience their own dramatic upheavals along with the rest of the country.

Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner
Mrs. Everything is an ambitious, richly textured journey through history—and herstory—as these two sisters navigate a changing America over the course of their lives. Growing up in 1950s Detroit, sisters Bethie and Jo live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life. But the truth ends up looking different from what the girls imagined. Neither woman inhabits the world she dreams of, nor has a life that feels authentic or brings her joy. Is it too late for the women to finally stake a claim on happily ever after?
Cu
Timely and brilliant, Chandler Baker’s Whisper Network is an instant bestseller. The story follows Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita who have worked at Truviv, Inc. for years. The sudden death of Truviv’s CEO means their boss, Ames, will likely take over the entire company. Each of the women has a different relationship with Ames, who has always been surrounded by whispers about how he treats women. But the world has changed, and the women are watching this promotion differently. This time, when they find out Ames is making an inappropriate move on a colleague, they aren’t willing to let it go. This time, they’ve decided enough is enough.
