addleboards and kayaks provide a way to get close and personal with Lake Chelan. One stands on a paddleboard and once he or she has gained experience, can gaze down into the water to see the aquatic life below, or look out straight to take in the scenery around. “It’s a very unique way of traveling on the lake,” said Lake Rider Sports owner Teague Block. Lake Rider Sports rents paddleboards, giant paddleboards (called supsquatch) and kayaks at Don Morse Park in Chelan. They also rent paddleboards in Manson through Shoreline Watercraft and Boat Rentals.
Block said that the trick to getting started with paddleboarding is to keep your chin up and look straight ahead. Ride with your legs apart in a “warrior” stance to keep your balance. Block said that some people take right to the sport, and others may need a little more patience to get the hang of it. Once learned, paddleboarding unlocks a world of water fun. Some people even like to go past the basics to perform yoga moves and other tricks on the paddleboard. Block said that when it is windy, kayaks are the best choice. Kayaks are super easy to maneuver

and are great for people of all ages, including children. Dogs love the chance to ride along. Block said that Lake Rider Sports has been extremely busy this summer. he last three years have been full of challenges, surprises and rewards for Adam and Kelli Rynd. In Sept. 2017 the couple, who had previously owned a vacation rental business and Chelan Spa & Pool, purchased the 34-year-old Swim World Chelan. Kelli Rynd described the experience as a “crash course” in how to
run a retail store. Yet, in the end it became a satisfying outlet for their creativities. “I found it rewarding and super fun,” she said. The business has become a family one in more ways than one. Four of the Rynds’ eight children work at the store, and Kelli Rynd’s daughter, Ashley Bradley, is the general

manager. There are a total of 13 employees. Since taking on the store, the Rynds have renovated the physical building and worked on building an expanded brand. Kelli Rynd joked that many visitors thought that Swim World was just a place to buy swimsuits. In order to change this image, the Rynds moved the Swim World sign to the side of the store, and named the front of the store, which has a boutique feel, “Lake Life Chelan.” They hired Chuck Adams as a full time sales manager for Jacuzzi sales. This gives Kelli Rynd and Bradley the chance to focus on the boutique side of the business. Kelli Rynd said that the two have dreamed about running a boutique together since Bradley was a child. Lake Life Chelan sells a wide variety of Lake Chelan souvenirs and gift items, children’s toys, vintage signs, Lake Chelan artwork, year-
around swimwear and swim toys and aquatic weights. Hot tubs, patio furniture, chemicals and supplies are sold through the side entrance. The new motto of the business incorporates a larger mission than just pools and spas. It is “Create your own backyard oasis.” The Rynds also have a vision for swimming in Chelan that goes beyond the store. The Rynd Family Foundation has plans for building a competitive-size covered swim pool at the new Lake Chelan Community Center that is being built by the Seven Acres Foundation below the Lookout on Highway 150. The pool will be a non-profit that will provide swimming lessons and aquatic classes to people of all ages. Kelli Rynd said that the hope is that Manson and Chelan High Schools will be able to use the pool to develop competitive swim teams. The pool will also provide a venue for competitive events that will draw

more people to Lake Chelan. The Seven Acres Foundation will break ground on the community center this fall, the timing of the construction of the pool is not determined yet. Like most other local businesses, Swim World has faced some challenging months during the COVID-19 pandemic. March and April were very difficult, according to Kelli Rynd. Swim World applied for and received an essential business license, but decided voluntarily to sell merchandise at Lake Life Chelan by appointment only during the early part of the pandemic. The Rynds were uncertain about how much new merchandise to order for the summer. They decided to keep inventory coming in anticipation of a better summer. This turned out to be a good deci-
sion. Rynd said that from June until now, the business has done very well. In fact, sales in both parts of the store have increased over 40% from 2019. These good months have been helped along by many in the community who have made a concerted effort to shop local, knowing that local businesses need local support during this time. The business made some changes in response to the pandemic. They added an online store, which has been successful. They also adapted their inventory to the things people need during the pandemic. They donated 2,000 cloth masks to individuals and to health care workers and retirement homes. Now they are selling the masks in the store at cost and have sold over 4,000. They have also sold hand sanitizer. Rynd said that as Swim World looks toward the winter there continue to be uncertainties. She said that owners and staff are doing their best to be prepared and adaptable, so that they can weather what comes.
