LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK
The Lake Chelan Rodeo is this Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27 at the Lake Chelan Rustlers Arena, and it is two days full of Western tradition and family fun that is in its 98th year this year. Highlights of the rodeo include the Chicken Race to be held both Friday and Saturday nights. All kids 12 and under are allowed to enter the arena and then try their darndest to catch a chicken when time is called. Another highlight will be the Tillicum Riders, a horseback drill team from Cashmere. These ladies will amaze you with their agility on
Cool said that Bar X Rodeo’s top goals are highlighting Western traditions and creating a fun family event. horseback, their teamwork and the enthusiasm that they exude. Throughout the rodeo, the audience will enjoy the humor of Ike Pryor a well-loved rodeo clown who has been convinced to come back from retirement to perform at least one more time. This year the rodeo will be run by Bar X Rodeo, a company that is owned by Tucker and Haley Cool. Tucker Cool grew up in Chelan, and has long roots in the Chelan Rodeo. Cool’s father, Rod Cool, has been involved in the rodeo for decades. Tucker Cool started taking part in rodeo at the age of 10 and continued through junior rodeo, high school rodeo, college rodeo and Pro-West rodeo. His rodeo career ended with a shoulder injury, but he turned to auctioning and rodeo announcing. Bar X Rodeo now puts on 27 rodeo shows through Washington and Oregon each year. Cool said that Bar X Rodeo’s top goals are highlighting Western traditions and creating a fun family event. One of the events that he makes sure is a part of all the rodeos he puts on is ranch bronc riding, where participants use a standard saddle on the back of a bucking horse. Cool said that spectators connect with the event because the saddle is the same as the ones that they have used in their riding experience. Other key attractions of the rodeo include bull riding, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer wrestling and team roping. Tickets are $12 at the gate and $10 in advance. Ages seven and under are free. Pre-sale tickets are available at rodeoticket.com. The rodeo grounds, vendors and beer garden open at 5 p.m. each evening and performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Rodeo location is 71 Union Valley Road in Chelan.

Top: The mysterious Phantom of the Op’ry teaches a terrified Pristine how to sing country music in “The Miserable Phantom of the Op’ry.” Middle: During a mini-variety show, the cast presents “Undisneyfied,” a parody of famous Disney movie songs. Bottom: The cast of “The Miserable Phantom of the Op’ry” strikes a pose at the finale.
or those looking for something fun to do during a summer evening in Chelan, Theater Under the Stars may be just the right thing. The local company provides live entertainment that is humorous and engaging for people aged four and up. This summer the group is putting on two musical comedies: “The Miserable Phantom of the Op’ry” and “Perry Hotter & the High School Musical.” Both are original works by owner-artistic director Stephen Taylor. Taylor said that “The Miserable Phantom of the Op’ry” was born when he watched Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserable and started noticing similarities between them. He quickly began to think how he could parody the songs, even adding in country music, a dimension of his Tennessee roots. The idea for “Perry Hotter & the High School Musical” came about when he was reading Harry Potter to his daughters at the same time that they were fans of “High School Musical.” Just as with the other two musicals, he started thinking about how these two plots might fit together into one parody. Each show has enough of its own plot that people who aren’t familiar with the original productions can still enjoy them. Taylor said that he thinks the shows are successful because ticket sales have been gradually increasing throughout the summer and because he sees people leaving with big smiles on their faces. Each show features a mini variety show along with the main production. Taylor hired six professional actors to play in the two productions throughout the summer season, which began June 26 and will run through Aug. 31. The productions are scheduled at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, with both of the two productions performed each week beginning on July 10. The original intent of Theater Under the Stars is that performances would be held at the Slidewaters amphitheater. This was the case in 2015. Due to construction at Slidewaters, this was not possible the next year. The 2016 season was held at the Lookout. In 2017 and 2018 Taylor took two years off to help look after his ailing father. This year performances are located in downtown Chelan at 204 E Okanogan Ave. Taylor said that he is hoping to move the theater back to Slidewaters in the future. In the meantime, there is a night sky projection on the ceiling during every performance. For more information about Theater Under the Stars or to buy tickets, see the website at tutschelan.com.

2. The Snakes | Sadie Jones
When Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, they are blithely ignorant of all that’s to come. By 2016, their four radically different adult daughters are each in a state of unrest. Above it all, the daughters share the lingering fear that they will never find a love quite like their parents’. As the novel moves through the tumultuous year following the arrival of Jonah Bendt--given up by one of the daughters in a closed adoption fifteen years before--we are shown the rich and varied tapestry of the Sorensons’ past: years marred by adolescence, infidelity, and resentment, but also the transcendent moments of joy that make everything else worthwhile.
4. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous | Ocean Vuong
Memory makes reality. That’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. Neuroscientist Helena Smith has dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious moments of our pasts. As Barry searches for the truth, he comes face-to-face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it, only he and Helena, working together, will stand a chance at defeating it.
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity.

3. Recursion | Blake Crouch
Bea and Dan, recently married, rent out their tiny flat to escape London for a few precious months. Driving through France they visit Bea’s dropout brother Alex at the hotel he runs in Burgundy. Disturbingly, they find him all alone and the ramshackle hotel deserted, apart from the nest of snakes in the attic. When Alex and Bea’s parents make a surprise visit, Dan can’t understand why Bea never wanted him to know them; Maybe Bea’s ashamed of him, or maybe she regrets the secrets she’s been keeping. Tragedy strikes suddenly, brutally, and in its aftermath the family is stripped back to its rotten core, and now neither Bea nor Alex can escape…
