EDITOR’S LETTER
A toast...
to the region’s amazing wines C
ongratulations to Cave B Estate Winery winemaker Freddy Arredondo for winning the big prize in this year’s judging for the North Central Washington Wine Awards. That’s Freddy and wife Carrie, the winery’s marketing and events manager, you see on the cover of this issue. Cave B’s Chenin Blanc was the judge’s choice for Best of Show in the wine judging that took place in Wenatchee back in June. It was a blind judging, meaning samples are tasted in pre-poured, numbered glasses so judges never see a bottle. They didn’t even know which wineries have submitted entries for judging. And it’s probably a good thing they didn’t know, because it would be hard to not vote for Freddy’s wines simply based on his likeability. Like with other business sectors, our region’s wine industry is filled with a variety of personalities — some easier to deal with than others. And I count Freddy among the people I always look forward to dealing with. I may be in the minority with this notion, but I admit there’s an extra layer of enjoyability when the wine in my glass is made by someone I know and respect. Thankfully, our region’s wine scene is filled with people who fit the bill. Inside this issue, you’ll find results from this year’s judging. As in years past, the judging was conducted with the help of Great Northwest Wine, an online media company (greatnorthwestwine.com) that knows its stuff. If you look closely, you’ll see we’ve reverted to the North Central Washington Wine Awards name, which is where we started out eight years ago before switching to the Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival brand a few years back. Several wineries had commented that the NCW Wine Awards name was more marketable for them when promoting their winning wines. We listened and decided to bring the name back and keep the Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival name exclusively for the popular event that takes place each year in late August. To boil it down: the NCW Wines Awards is the judging and the Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival is where we celebrate winners from said judging. Got that straight? Writer Rachel Hansen and photographer Paul T. Erickson also team up in this issue to bring us the story of local homesteaders Stuart and Shaye Elliott. Most everything the family — it includes four children between the ages of 3 and 8 — consumes comes from their 2.5-acre farm near East Wenatchee. It’s a testament to the hard work the couple has put into developing the property, and now, maintaining it. It’s not an easy life, it appears, but the Elliotts obviously believe the rewards are worth it. You’ll also find stories about pickleball, which is maybe the Wenatchee Valley’s hottest sport at the moment, and a nice feature on Jim and Nancy Snyder’s fabulous home off of Jennings Street in Wenatchee. Enjoy. And if you’re the wine-drinking type, consider enjoying it with a glass of your favorite pour.

Live music, dancing and delicious food are among the highlights of this multi-cultural event that marks Mexican Independence Day. In a nutshell, it’s a Mexican-flavored party celebrating the spirit of the “grito” or cry of independence a priest made in 1810 to inspire people to revolt against the oppressive Spanish regime. Ismael Vivanco, superintendent of the Orondo and Palisades school districts, sums up the intent of organizers: “This event teaches us all that we can be proud of our heritage, history and culture, while knowing that our contributions are woven into the fabric of this nation which makes us strong and proud citizens!” For a schedule of events, visit fiestasmexicanas.net. 10

He’s sold more than 15 million albums, including his classics Autumn and December. His most recent album, Restless Wind, was released in early May. It documents the pianist’s sociological observations of American history while featuring his interpretations of works by Sam Cooke, The Doors, Stephen Stills, the Gershwin brothers, Joe McDonald and others. Jim and Nancy Snyder turn ‘wreck’ property into showpiece home
I
n 2003, when Nancy and Jim Snyder bought their Wenatchee home, friends reacted — strongly. “This place was such a wreck,” Nancy says. “People who saw it said, ‘You are crazy.’” Among the problems: wood paneling throughout the upstairs, Linoleum floors, old cabinets and a chopped up configuration in the kitchen, and a field of weeds throughout much of the 3.5 acres surrounding the house. Today, the Snyder home is a showpiece. The wood paneling is gone, the kitchen is reconfigured and remodeled, and fields of grass, rock walls and flowers surround the 1950s-era home. So why buy the house to begin with? “It had good bones,” explains Nancy. “And we thought to ourselves: ‘This is a great place for a little boy to grow up.’”

She and Jim were also drawn by the vintage, metal-squared windows in the kitchen, dining room and living room, and by the view of the Columbia River from the huge picture window in the living room. Throughout the years, the couple also added seven skylights to bring brightness into what they said was a dark interior. They knocked out numerous walls, expanding the entryway and making a large master bedroom out of what had been two bedrooms. They also added a balcony off the master bedroom, and added extra space off the south side of the house to accommodate a master bath. They remodeled the basement to

They also dug out an old swimming pool that had been covered over and was weed-ridden, and had a new pool installed. What they left in place were those “bones” that Nancy noted earlier: a large rock wall and fireplace in the living room, an adjoining fireplace in the kitchen, the rock exterior of the house and pine ceilings in the upstairs living area. The property, off Jennings Street, has a rural feel, despite being only minutes from town. For the past 10 years, the Snyders have worked with Wenatchee landscape designer and consultant Susan Cusick. One of the goals has been to make the property as firewise as possible. The large, grassy areas surrounding the house make a great firebreak, Jim says. “We have been evacuated a few times over the years, and feel more protected with the green belt that now surrounds us,” Nancy says. They say Cusick is a collaborator who works with them and their ideas. Among the outdoor gems is a mimosa tree, with pink blossoms, just outside their dining room French doors. It provides shade and color all summer. There are also large lavender beds behind the house and lots of flowers. 16

Nancy says she and Jim had numerous large rocks placed among the garden spots several years ago, but they did not look right. “We finally gave up and asked for Susan’s help,”Nancy says. “Within a very short time, she had the bulldozer operator place all of the rocks in a beautiful, naturallooking formation.” Nancy says the work on their home has been “like peeling an onion. Everything has happened over time.” They describe the interior of the home as eclectic, with some Mediterranean and French country thrown in.

Players regularly rotate teams and courts, giving them interaction with a lot of players. Bill Parker, at 79 years old, has been a pickleball fan since 2016. “I was one of the chief shovelers,” Parker said, referring to the first two winters the club had to play outdoors, shoveling the powder off the frosty courts in East Wenatchee. Now pickleball players can hit the courts in the warmth of the WRAC. Club members play for free, but nonmembers can join the action by paying a per-visit fee. “I play pickleball because it’s fun, it’s addictive, it’s exercise,” Parker said. “… And moving is improving.”

Homesteaders Stuart and Shaye Elliott embrace a self-sufficient life

t the Elliott homestead, breakfast looks like a scene from generations ago. On a May morning, Shaye’s kitchen buzzed with activity. Her husband Stuart took a break from morning chores to ground home-roasted coffee beans with a hand-crank. A golden-crusted frittata and a bottle of raw milk sat

on butcher-block countertops. Pastel-colored eggs were piled high in a wooden bucket. Their children — ages 3 to 8 — changed out of their pajamas, while Shaye loaded a dishwasher with handmade plates and mugs. A dozen sheep and their cow, CeCe, grazed the pastures outside.
The Elliott family lives largely off what they raise themselves on their 2.5-acre farm. Shaye and Stuart with their children, from left, William, 4, Juliette, 3, Owens, 6, and Georgia, 8, work hard, live simply and say they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“When we moved to this farm three years ago, there was a barn and this house,” Stu said, referring to the 108-year-old rambler they gutted to studs. “Everything else we put in — the garden, the greenhouse, the coop, the pastures.” The Elliotts are homesteaders. A 2.5-acre farm supports their family yearround with organic vegetables, fruit, livestock and dairy. Under a creed of self-sufficiency, they cultivate most of what they consume. Their lifestyle revives long-forgotten skills from pioneer days. The Elliotts churn butter and make yogurt from raw milk. They keep four sheep and the cow yearround, then butcher lambs and other livestock in autumn. They bake bread, make wine, craft medicine from plants and preserve the gardens’ bounty. Unlike the farmers and orchardists whose many acres surround their Malaga plot, the Elliotts don’t sell what they produce. At least, not in a traditional way. Shaye authors one of the leading homesteading blogs nationwide. More than 100,000 readers a month devour their lifestyle through blog posts, videos and recipes on their website, “The Elliott Homestead.” Their main income is by selling DoTerra essential oils online, which allowed Stuart to quit his job three years ago. Recently, they added a subscription-based cooking community. They also published four books about cooking and homesteading, three of which are distributed commercially at stores like Costco and Target. Life wasn’t always like this. Nearly 10 years ago, they juggled part-time jobs and college. Their lifestyle was more mainstream with no connection to the food they ate. Two things changed everything — a book and a baby. “It really started with baby food,” Shaye said. “I wanted to grow my own. It clicked back into this motherly, homemaker part of me that I hadn’t explored before. Something like cooking supper all of a sudden became exciting.” She was inspired by a library book, “The Balanced Plate.” The vegan cookbook put her on a path to adopt a new lifestyle, one that considered

well-sourced food as the foundation of well-being. When their daughter, Georgia, turned 6 months old, Shaye became a stay-at-home mom and started the blog as a creative outlet. Then, she wrote about food politics, new motherhood, and learning how to grow her own and connect with local producers. “I considered what we had a homestead, even when it wasn’t a homestead,” Shaye said. “It was a house, and a plan, and a fresh loaf of bread. It was a mindset of ‘I want to cultivate this home. I want this to become a hub.’” Scraping by with three children on Stuart’s teaching salary, Shaye tried to monetize the blog with advertising spots, which earned $40 a month. “At that time, $40 was a lot,” Shaye said. “It just snowballed from there.” Around 2014, they started using the blog to sell DoTerra products. They self-published their first cookbook and sold it to thousands online. Within 2.5 years, the extra income allowed them to purchase their home on two acres in Malaga. Meanwhile, their online audience grew exponentially, but so did the

scrutiny. Through trial and error, Shaye began to steer away from personal topics like politics, healthcare and parenting, opting instead for home decor, cooking, farming and gardening. “I think a lot of bloggers write about what will get the most people to click, and what gets people clicking is divisiveness,” Shaye said. “I wanted the website to become a place where people felt fed and nourished and encouraged.” National magazines, including The Atlantic last fall, wrote profiles about the Elliotts as the poster family for the homesteading movement. A production company asked them to film a TV pilot for Food Network. But after six years of broadcasting their life online, the TV pilot was “the first moment of ‘this is really weird, this shouldn’t be happening,’” Shaye said. Shaye knew it was a gamble. The appeal of a homestead cooking show was narrow at best. She resisted the network’s recommendation to use white sugar, white flour and storebought butter cubes to attract a wider audience.

“In hindsight, I think they made the right call, because we do cook differently than the average American family,” Shaye said. “They weren’t quite ready for that, and that’s OK.” Since then, The Elliotts have turned down interview requests from national media. Shaye hired an assistant to help with DoTerra, emails and comment moderation. Shaye still writes and photographs blog posts and recipes, and Stuart films it all. And, that’s enough. “Over time, I’ve learned to keep it in balance, to use that space and not let it use me,” Shaye said. This spring was the first time in a while that Shaye felt settled and grounded. The bones of the homestead are built. Her kids are all out of diapers and sleeping through the night. Her website is freshly rebuilt. “We’re stepping out of our teen years,” she said. “We know who we are now. We know the types of things we want to write about. We know the things that resonate with our readers, and that’s what we want to concentrate on.” F

It went on to easily garner the most votes against all other Best of Class winners for the prestigious Best of Show Award. The minerality of grapes grown in the Ancient Lakes AVA, where all Cave B’s vineyards are located, contributed to three other Gold Medal winners for Arredondo. The 2018 Cave B Vineyards Viognier earned a Double Gold Medal and Best of Class Award. The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc and 2018 Roussanne were also Gold Medal winners. Judges also awarded Cave B wines an even dozen Silver Medals. Those winners included its 2016 vintage red wines: Cabernet Franc, XXXI Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, XXXI Merlot, Cuvée Du Soleil, Caveman Red and Tempranillo. White wines earning Silver Medal honors were 2018 vintage Unoaked Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Dry Rosé, Curvée Blanc and
Cavewoman White. Cave B is a family operation. Freddy’s wife, Carrie, is winery events and marketing manager. Her parents, Vince and Carol Bryan, began planting vineyards on the steep bluffs above the Columbia in 1980, when there were few vineyards in Washington. The vineyards were gradually expanded around what is now the famed Gorge Amphitheatre and the Cave B Inn & Spa Resort. The vineyards cover 93 acres and include 17 wine grape varieties. Many judges agree — and awards confirm — that the Ancient Lakes AVA, with Cave B at its center, is one of the best and most distinctive growing sites in the state, especially for white wine grapes. F

hris Daniel Winery may be a recent entry into the competitive world of North Central Washington wineries, but it hasn’t taken the Quincy winery long to establish a solid reputation for fine wines.
The winery, in its first time competing in 2017, won a Double Gold and Gold medals for its 2014 Malbec and Petite Sirah. Last year, it followed up with a Double Gold/Best of Class for its Cabernet Sauvignon, with three other wines winning Gold Medals.

This year, judges took the winery even higher, awarding Chris Daniel five Gold Medals, along with two Silver Medal winners. Gold Medal winners were the 2015 Ten 23 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Petite Sirah, 2015 Dakota Red, 2018 Rosé and 2015 Syrah. Silver Medals went to the winery’s 2015 Malbec and 2018 Viognier. Judges thought the Ten 23 Cabernet Sauvignon had good depth, soft tannins and lots of black fruit on the nose and palate: everything needed for a great, easy-drinking wine. The Petite Sirah, one judge called a “killer wine,” with lots of blackberry, chocolate, spice, floral aromas, great mouthfeel and a long finish. For the Malbecbased Dakota Red, judges also loved that round mouthfeel with notes of vanilla, chocolate, oak and spices. The 2015 Syrah, made in the French style with 2 to 3 percent Viognier, was loaded with spicy black pepper and mint and lots of black fruit. “The really long finish is a winner,” commented one judge. The 2018
Rosé, made in the saignée process of siphoning juice off the red grapes right after crushing and then processing as a blush wine, was praised for its cotton candy color and fragrance with sweet cherry, strawberries and cream coming through on the palate. Chris Daniel Winery is owned and operated by the Stewart family of Quincy. Chris Daniel Stewart is the winemaker, and balances his time between the home winery and a Napa winery and vineyards where he also works. His training and focus is on mixing old world and new world winemaking styles to come up with wines that best express Washington terroir. Chris’ parents are fully involved in the process. His father, Michael, is a vineyard consultant who helps Chris locate the best grapes and carry out day-to-day activities when Chris is in California. when the Foothills Magazine judging first started in 2011, Chateau Faire Le Pont was a sensation, winning five Gold and three Silver Medals. The Wenatchee winery has continued to be one of the competition’s top-scoring entrants every year since. And this year is no exception. Winemaker Doug Brazil earned four Gold Medals in this year’s gathering of the region’s top wines, including a Double Gold Medal (a unanimous vote for gold by all judges) for his 2015 Malbec. Other Gold Medals were awarded to his 2015 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Carménère and 2015 Provence Rhonestyle red blend. Judges’ Comments: Winemaker Freddy Arredondo crafts the wines at this showpiece winery near Quincy, next to the Gorge Amphitheatre, and used estate grapes to create a white wine that shines. This stunner has aromas and flavors of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, while backed with acidity that props up the abundant fruit. (415 cases, 13.7% alc.)
Judges’ Comments: This Snoqualmie-based winery also has a tasting room on the south shore of Lake Chelan, a good place to show off wines like this gem. This Mourvedre-heavy blend reveals just how delicious Rhone-style wines can be in Washington. Though Grenache only makes up a third of the blend, it stands out as a dominant part of the wine, revealing notes of bright red fruit, moist earthiness, plum, cherry and leather. This is a complete wine that needs to only age on your way home. (128 cases; 14.9% alc.)
Judges’ Comments: Winemaker Victor Palencia has proven through the years to be a wizard with pink wines, both with his own brand as well with this Quincy-based winery. This pink wine is no exception, thanks to rich aromas of cherries and raspberries, along with complex notes of peach and orange oil. It is bright and crisp on the midpalate, with a soft, juicy finish. (1,974 cases; 11.8% alc.)

How the judging works Judges typically look for true-to-type wines that offer a satisfying, sometimes exceptional, drinking experience for all. As one judge mentioned, there is no shame in earning a Bronze medal because it’s the equivalent of the judges agreeing that they would recommend a wine consumer buy a bottle of that wine. A higher-level medal is simply a stronger endorsement of that particular bottle. Wines are judged double blind. Judges don’t know which wineries are Wine judge Amberleigh Brownson, a trained entered in the competition. sommelier, sips a flight of white wines during Panel moderators tell the June’s judging. judges what type or varietal is in the flight of glasses in front of them but offer no speciftrio of three-judge panels tasted ics about the producer or source of the and reviewed 236 entries subgrapes. mitted by 35 wineries for the Judges taste the wines in flights acNorth Central Washington Wine Awards cording to type. Spitting out the wine is the part that kills some wine enthusiasts — so much wine simply going to waste. There’s a rather obvious reason for that, of course; if judges consumed the wine they are judging, they’d be three sheets to the wind in hardly any time. Judges take notes for each wine. Often, judges will revisit a wine two or three times to see if it opens up after a few minutes. Judges score each wine a Gold, Silver, Bronze or no medal. Once a judge scores all the wines in a flight, the scores are passed to the panel moderator, who records them in a spreadsheet. If all three judges on the panel agree on a medal — say, Bronze — that is how the overall grade is recorded in the spreadsheet. If all three judges score a wine as a Gold, it is elevated to Double Gold status. If there are differences in opinion, the moderator calls for discussion to reach a consensus. Judges can take another sip of the wine in question and argue their case up or down on the medal score until they agree. All judges taste the highest-rated wines to decide the Superlative winners — Best Red, Best White and Best Rosé. From that mix, judges decide which wine is the overall standout that deserves Best of Show honors. F

Tasting room open noon to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; hours vary seasonally 78 Swartout Road, Manson (509) 888-7611 successionwines.com

Judges’ comments: This craft winery is based in the westside town of Snoqualmie, but has a NorthCentral Washington presence in Chelan with a tasting room on the lake’s south shore. This white blend focuses on Roussanne, a Rhone Valley variety that can be boring on its own, but the inclusion of Viognier and Chardonnay transforms it into an enticing wine with notes of lemon, yellow flowers, white peach, layers of fruit backed by bright acidity and a complex hint of minerality in the long finish. (247 cases; 14.9% alc.) Chelan tasting room open noon to 7 p.m. daily; hours vary seasonally 2037 W. 2017 Animal Edge Zinfandel, Rattlesnake Hills, $26 Judges’ comments: After learning winemaking at South Seattle Community College, Sandi Moreno bought a small winery in the Cascade town of Cashmere and started making wine. Using grapes from the Rattlesnake Hills, she crafted this tasty Zin. It is loaded with aromas and flavors of cherries, wild raspberry and herbal hints. This has a richer mouth feel than typical California Zins, giving way to a long, luscious finish. (65 cases; 14.7% alc.)
