ith summer swim days coming to an end, it is a good time to make plans for one or two last swim trips of the season. Unfortunately, everyone else in the Chelan area seems to have the same idea, and it can be hard to find a spot on the beach. A trip down to Chelan Falls or Orondo may help you beat the crowds and enjoy the last bit of summer. Chelan Falls Powerhouse Park is a small park with a great little swimming hole and lots of picnicking space. The park is located in a sheltered inlet of the Chelan River, separated from the Columbia River by Chelan Falls Road and the Burlington Northern Railroad. It has a large shallow area, which makes it great for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. The beach and bottom of the swimming area are covered mostly with sand and small pebbles, so it is not hard on bare feet. There is a shaded area ideal for setting up towels, lawn chairs and picnic gear for the day. A grassy field provides a place for volleyball, badminton or frisbee. The park is managed by the Chelan PUD and is located at 200 Powerhouse Road in Chelan. The park is open through the end of October. Another great swim hole in Chelan Falls is the Chelan Falls Park, also operated by the Chelan PUD. In addition to a swimming area, this park has a boat launch, a shoreline trail, a tennis court and horseshoe pits. The park is located on the Columbia River. A third Chelan PUD managed park is the Beebe Bridge Park, located just on the east side of the Beebe Bridge. The park features a swimming area, a boat launch, tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a shoreline trail. The park is open through the end of October. Daroga State Park is located along Highway 97 about 25 minutes from Chelan.

INSIDE STORY It is a picturesque oasis among the surrounding desert hills, itself surrounded by a swath of orchards. The park includes a swim area, boat launch, tennis and basketball courts, and a two-mile long trail system good for hiking or biking. The trail hugs a system of canals and ponds, so if you like to fish, bring your pole along with

you and find a quiet place along the way. The park is open through the end of September. A State Parks Discover Pass or the Chelan PUD Day Use Parking Pass is required for Daroga State Park. Parking at the other three parks is free.

1 2 3 Firefly Lane By Kristin Hannah

From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . .In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone’s Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it’s the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It’s about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you’ll never forget.

The Girl They Left Behind

The Couple Next Door

By Roxanne Veletzos

By Shari Lapena

On a freezing night in January 1941, a little Jewish girl is found on the steps of an apartment building in Bucharest. With Romania recently allied with the Nazis, the Jewish population is in grave danger so the girl is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy childless couple who name her Natalia. As she assimilates into her new life, she all but forgets the parents who were forced to leave her behind. The Girl They Left Behind “is a vividly told, beautifully written, impossible-but-true story” (Helen Bryan, internationally bestselling author of War Brides) that you won’t soon forget.

It all started at a dinner party. . .A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . .Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately lands on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story. What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family—a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

Watson’s Alpenhorn Cafe

this summer B

STORY BY KAREN LARSEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF WATSON’S ALPENHORN CAFE

Creatures fitting the forest environment welcome guests to Watson’s Alpenhorn Cafe

Tables are provided right next to First Creek, just down the stairs from where meals are ordered and picked up

A young guest reacts to the toilet seat bench in Washington’s smallest indoor dining room.

ack in 2011, when the owners of the Alpenhorn Cafe put the historic eatery on the market, Bob Watson Jr., who is a part owner of Watson’s Harverene Resort where the cafe is located, decided to make an offer. It was accepted so quickly that Watson describes himself as being a bit spooked. “I’d never had anything to do with a restaurant,” he said. He planned to wait until the next year to reopen the restaurant, but the employees all said they wanted to work, so he got busy contacting food and supply vendors. A representative from Sysco came to walk him through restaurant ABCs. Watson remembered certain menu items that he had enjoyed at the cafe since he was a boy, like hot dogs that were split before being grilled, and buns that were buttered and toasted on the grill. He preserved those traditions. The Chelan Burger topped with ham, pineapple and swiss cheese was too good to lose. He thought of grilling sauerkraut on top of a grilled brat, and that has become the Alpenhorn Brat Dog. Watson chose names that commemorate the local geographical features, or the Watson family history in the location. These include the Harverene Deluxe Burger named after the resort, the J. Howard Big Burger Deluxe after Watson’s great-grandfather J. Howard, who first homesteaded the land in 1892, the First Creek Cod Burger, after the creek that runs by the resort, and the Stormy Mountain BLT, after a mountain located in the Entiat that sits at the headwaters of First Creek. Some menu items were added, especially wraps.

The Watsons didn’t change the name of the restaurant other than adding the family name. It had been named the Alpenhorn Cafe since Oly and Thelma Sandam started it in 1966. Watson said that tying the family name with the cafe added a certain pressure to the business. If the family name was there, then it had to be managed in a way that did honor to the name. From the time the Watsons took over the cafe, the goal has been to attract and retain local customers. “If we can get the locals coming, we’ll have our share of tourists,” Watson said. One of the hallmarks of the cafe is the miniature golf course next to it. This was in disrepair when the Watsons purchased the cafe, and like other aspects of the building and grounds, they set about upgrading it. It now provides a fun activity for before or after a meal. All children’s meals come with a complimentary round of mini golf. The cafe features 100 percent outdoor seating, except for a six foot by six foot dining room that is officially the smallest dining room in Washington State. This was built to satisfy the Liquor Board’s requirement that all establishments that sell alcoholic beverages must have indoor dining. Toilet seats cover the benches,

providing a touch of humor and making a peek at the dining room a part of the Alpenhorn experience. The Alpenhorn Cafe is a place to enjoy the outdoors, and the relative coolness provided by the wooded surroundings. One can even walk down to First Creek to enjoy the meal at tables near the water. The outdoor nature of the cafe has made it very popular during the pandemic.

“We’re having the best season we’ve ever had,” Watson said. Watson’s Alpenhorn Cafe is located at 7600 South Lakeshore Road across the highway from Lake Chelan State Park. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week from the third weekend in June up until Labor Day, and perhaps a few weekends past Labor Day this year.
