In small nursing homes or adult family homes, losing just one worker who is vaccine-hesitant could have a critical impact. With less than two months before the deadline, providers are working to strike a balance: Advocate for workers to get a vaccine and ensure residents are properly cared for, all while preparing for the possibility that someone may not be persuaded and choose to leave. “When we think about the workforce total,

Children fill the fairgrounds with their animals By sydnee gonzalez World staff writer WATERVILLE — Cars and trailers lined up for hours Wednesday afternoon at the Douglas County Fairgrounds as exhibitors waited to check their animals in for the North Central Washington Fair. About 475 kids and teens from around the region came with pigs, steers, chickens and more to get ready for the fair, which starts today. Although there are fewer exhibitors participating than the most recent in-person fair in 2019, fair livestock clerk Ann Whitehall is excited to see people back in person. “It was wonderful to get as many animals registered as we did,” Whitehall said. “I was excited.” The fair — ncwfair. org — runs through Sunday. Returning to an in-person fair has been exciting for the 4-H Club and FFA participants as well — and most of them

Decision comes after FDA approves Pfizer vaccine

PULLMAN — Washington State University students can no longer submit for personal or philosophical exemptions to the school’s COVID-19 vaccine policy after the Food and Drug

Administration gave full approval Monday to the Pfizer vaccine. Likewise, students who have requested those exemptions will have a 45-day window to either provide proof of vaccination (or initiation of vaccination) or seek for a new medical or religious exemption.

WSU spokesman Phil Weiler said the clock has not yet started on that window, as university officials are expected to provide more information to students in the coming days. In all other cases, students have until Sept. 10 to provide proof of initiation or completion of a COVID-19 vaccination or to file an exemption. As of Monday, 11,865 of WSU Pullman students (62.2%) have complied with the university’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement. Weiler said 11,100 students have

submitted proof of vaccination, 200 have asked either for a medical or religious exemption and 565 have sought personal exemptions. Of those who are compliant, 93.7% are fully vaccinated, Weiler said. Meanwhile, Weiler reported just 143 WSU Spokane students (9%) have complied with the vaccine requirement, with 139 who have submitted proof of vaccination,
