rape growing, winemaking and wine tasting are intimately connected at Hard Row to Hoe Vineyards. These in turn flow from appreciation for the land and careful stewardship of the natural beauty of the shrub steppe landscape

and the valley’s treasured watershed, Lake Chelan. The vineyards are certified under the LIVE program (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) and the Salmon Safe program. Don Phelps, who manages the

vineyard and is co-owner with his wife, Judy, said that a key distinguishing factor in his farming of the 13 acres of Hard Row to Hoe vineyards is doing weed control without chemicals. This means a lot of mowing and occasional hand pulling of weeds. Hard Row to Hoe planted its first vines in 2005, and Don and Judy said they feel like pioneers as they figure out the ideal varieties and cultivation methods for their Manson vineyards. “It’s like a new frontier for us winemakers,” said Judy, who manages the production side of the operation. “It’s all very exciting because no one has ever done it before.” They started with a visit north to

the Okanogan Valley of British Columbia to narrow the field of choices and get an idea of what might work. One of the early vines that they planted was the Cabernet Franc. It produced grapes of a high quality and unique flavor. This wine has taken high points in every judging contest the Phelps have brought it to. Judy described it as their “flagship wine.” Other red wine varieties that have done very well are the Syrah, Pinot Noir and Malbec. White varieties that seem to thrive here include Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Hard Row to Hoe grows about 70 percent of its own grapes, and purchases the remaining 30 percent from local vineyards. Judy said that wine tastes better when made from freshly-picked grapes. Also, she and Don value Lake Chelan’s AVA designation earned in 2009. They want to support this designation by working hard to grow

high-quality local grapes, and to support others with the same mission. Judy said that both the vineyard’s environmental stewardship and their on-site production mean a lot to visitors. People enjoy sitting at the Manson location and sipping wine while viewing the vines that produced the main ingredient. Hard Row to Hoe is beginning harvest now, which starts off a busy six weeks in the vineyard and in the production facility. It is a wonderful time to visit, as one can view the process in action, and even get a taste of the grapes being used to make the wines. Hard Row to Hoe, has gone the extra mile with social distancing, offering all outdoor seating with tables spaced 10 feet apart. The Lake Chelan tasting room is located at 300 Ivan Morse Road in Manson and is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

BOOKS & FARMERS MARKETS

by Delia Owens

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove,

a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens. Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Small Great Things

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hos-

by Jodi Picoult

pital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family—especially her teenage son—as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong. With incredible empathy, intelligence, and candor, Jodi Picoult tackles race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion—and doesn’t offer easy answers. Small Great Things is a remarkable achievement from a writer at the top of her game.

The Nightingale

by Kristin Hannah

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
