Harmony Meadows:
World class courts and passion for raising up tomorrow’s tennis enthusiasts STORY BY KAREN LARSEN PHOTOS PROVIDED BY HARMONY MEADOWS
J
eremy and Jacquelyn Jaech discovered tennis in midlife and developed passion for the sport. The Seattle couple had property in Chelan, and one of the activities they enjoyed was to go to the Banjo Creek Farm in Manson for cowboy dinners and other activities. They planned to make Chelan their next home. The Jaechs built a house here in 2005. Soon after, the Banjo Creek Farm went out of business and was
abandoned for five years. In 2017 the Jaechs bought the farm and turned it into Harmony Meadows, a place where they could bring their passion for tennis to the Chelan and Manson communities. Wanting to have the capability to hold tournaments at Harmony Meadows, they built eight world-class tennis courts. Jacquelyn said that Harmony Meadows is the only facility on the west coast to provide world-class

courts that are open to the public. These courts are unique in providing a cushioned surface, which protects the joints. They also built two pickleball courts and multiple buildings for their events center. The events center is the economic powerhouse behind the tennis facility. Since Harmony Meadows opened in 2017, it has been a popular wedding venue. The Jaechs are working toward

a long term goal of building it into a boutique destination tennis resort. To that end they added nine more accommodation units this summer. The Jaechs are working toward the goal of encouraging tennis players of all ages in the community. To this end they provide several weeks of free tennis programs for students in both Chelan and Manson schools. Manson High School hasn’t had a tennis team for decades and this year the Jaechs offered the Harmony Meadows facilities for practices and matches at no cost to the district. Twenty Manson High School students signed up for the team before it was learned that the season would be cancelled due to COVID. The team should be able to happen next spring, and the Jaechs look forward to helping build up competitive local tennis players who will ultimately
be candidates for college tennis scholarships. The Jaechs also want to encourage people of all ages to enjoy tennis. “It’s a lifetime sport,” Jacquelyn said, adding that she plans to play actively until she is in her 80s. Tennis has been named one of the safest pandemic activities. What better place to enjoy it than on worldclass courts among Manson’s worldclass scenery? Harmony Meadows is located at 4848 Green Avenue in Manson. The facility provides clinics and camps for youth and adults as well as private lessons. Weekly drop-in pickleball and tennis play times are available. Court reservations can be made online at harmonymeadowscenter.com. More information about booking Harmony Meadows for a wedding or event is also available on the website.

The Book Thief 1 by Markus Zusak
When Death has a story to tell, you listen. It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.
Caravel 2
by Stephanie Garber
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever. Welcome, welcome to Caraval... beware of getting swept too far away.

Life changes forever for Liv when her older brother, Jonah, accidentally shoots himself with his best friend Clay’s father’s gun. Now Jonah needs round-the-clock care just to stay alive, and Liv feels like she’s the only person who can see that her brother is still there inside his broken body. With Liv’s mom suing Clay’s family, there are divisions in the community that Liv knows she’s not supposed to cross. But Clay is her friend, too, and she refuses to turn away from him—just like she refuses to give up on Jonah. This powerful novel is a stunning exploration of tragedy, grief, compassion, and forgiveness.

bers of his family--his wife Celia, who serves as waitress, his son Bernardino, who serves as manager, and his son, Ernesto, Jr., a freshman at Wenatchee High School, who pitches in when he is free. Ernesto Velazquez first came to this country on a work visa to serve as a cook in a restaurant in Texas. Since then he has continued to perfect his recipes, cooking in restaurants across the country. The Velazquez family came to Wenatchee from Oregon in 2002 and opened El Sol Restaurant on North Wenatchee Avenue. They operated El Sol until 2013. 2015, served as a waiter and busser at El Sol. Asked to describe some of the highlights of the menu, Bernardino said that “Camerones Mi Puerto” is a plate of shrimp sauteed with mushrooms, bell pepper and green onion, poured over rice and topped with cheese. “Mar y tierra” combines carne asada with shrimp cooked in garlic sauce. The dish also includes sides of rice and beans. “Burrito Mi Puerto” is a seafood burrito with a creamy sauce. Mi Puerto also hosts a full bar. Bernardino said that the margaritas are especially good. Like other businesses, Mi Puerto
faced a shock this spring when the economy shut down due to COVID. “Those three months were definitely a little shaky,” Bernardino said. They survived as best they could, and kept their hope alive. The summer months were good, Bernardino said, except for some slow times when smoke from wildfires kept everyone indoors. Mi Puerto, located in the Riverwalk Building at 114 E. Woodin Ave., is very convenient to downtown Chelan, and is a popular lunch hub. French doors in the building provide a beautiful view of the lake. Mi Puerto is open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily for fall/winter hours.
