Director General Dave Herald
Warm Spring days are here, the blossoms have bloomed – It’s time for “A Family Tradition”, the 96th Annual Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. Thanks to our fantastic Administrator Darci Waterman and her loyal passionate staff, our dedicated Apple Blossom Festival Board and Committee Chairs and the hundreds of behind-thescene volunteers…this festival is sure to be another blockbuster. Part of my vision was to include as much of our community as possible in the planning of our Festival and we are thrilled to have Wenatchee Valley College’s Fabrication, Welding & Art Departments build our colorful festival float. Many hours of hard work has gone into this effort and we couldn’t have done it without the guidance and design skills of 2014 Director General and fellow Applarian, Pat McDonald. Her leadership, passion and dedication has been invaluable. I have enjoyed serving as your Director General this year and want to take a moment to thank my wife, Linda, for her love and support. Please enjoy all of our family events and activities Director General, Dave Herald during our eleven day festival “It’s a Family Tradition”. and his wife Linda.
On behalf of myself, Princess Anissa and Princess Francesca, we would like to welcome you to the 96th annual Apple Blossom Festival where we are honored and grateful to be representing the greater Wenatchee Valley. We are incredibly excited and passionate about being Ambassadors of this Festival and can’t wait to share the memories, the history, and the unique spirit that this festival has to offer. From the tall, rich mountains to the glistening Columbia River, Wenatchee has beauty for all to enjoy. This celebration in late April is fueled by 300 days of sunshine, hard-working and dedicated farmers and families, and extraordinary individuals. We are extremely fortunate and blessed to have the second oldest festival in the state to represent this time. People come from all around to watch children and talented community members dance, march, create art, and smile with the warmth and comfort that this festival provides. This festival allows us to see our special service clubs in action, our families involved, and the Valley we love harmonizing and unifying to grow and blossom as well. We hope to see you and your family at the 2015 Apple Blossom Festival where you will be indulged in kindness and engaged in making sure Queen Gabby Waterman that “It’s a Family Tradition.”
Apple Blossom... It’s a Family Tradition
Welcome Chancellor Ed Womack
On behalf of the Wenatchee Applarians, First Lady Allison and I welcome you to the 2015 Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. As the official hosting organization for the cities of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee, our members accompany the parade floats with our friends from other Northwest festivals as well as escort the 2015 Apple Blossom Royalty and float. We provide a fun filled weekend of hospitality for those guests showing them the best our valley has to offer. Each year, the Applarians provide a $6,000 scholarship to the Apple Blossom Queen towards furthering her education. Our organization serves as ambassadors, travelling to other festivals throughout the Northwest and Canada to accompany our royalty and their float in the parades of these wonderful cities. We invite you to soak up the excitement of the valley and this year’s festivities, enjoying the traditions of the Wenatchee Applarians. After all, the 2015 Apple Blossom Festival is “It’s a Family Applarian Chancellor Tradition!”

closed down, and has continued to grow from there. Today the nursing program consists of seven quarters and 123 credits. In the last 10 years, 2,000 students have graduated from the WVC Nursing program and it is estimated that 76% of nursing graduates are employed in the region and 82% of the nurses working at Central Washington Hospital came from the WVC Nursing program. Community College is a great stepping stone for transfer students of all ages, whether they plan to attend a trade school or a four year university. However, Wenatchee Valley College offers highquality instruction and real-world work experience to help students prepare for their careers which many find right here in our valley after just two years of education. The theme of the 2015 Apple Blossom Festival is “It’s a Family Tradition” and Wenatchee Valley College is truly “family” in our community as generations of spouses, parents, grandparents and siblings have attended WVC. As the Grand Marshal, the college will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday, April 29. Dr. Jim Richardson, President, will ride in the Stemilt Growers Grand Parade on Saturday, May 2 followed by representatives from each department at WVC. The Grand Marshal is sponsored by Colonial Vista Communities and Vista Rehab Therapy. For more information on the Grand Marshals, visit www.cwvc.edu.

We are so very lucky to have Wenatchee Valley College in our backyard as they have transformed the lives of so many people in our community. We are thrilled to honor all aspects of the college, celebrating 75 years of learning, as this year’s Grand Marshal,” says 2015 Director General Dave Herald. Wenatchee Valley College is truly a college for the community. The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is a federally funded program that benefits under-served populations as they help students from migrant/seasonal farmworking backgrounds during their first year of college. The Worker Retraining and Opportunity Grant help students with funds to cover tuition, books, etc. for up to 45 credits in qualified programs. This has enabled many students with families of their own to receive the credits they needed to further their education at four-year universities and beyond. The agriculture industry is vital to our community and the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program (HOEEP) has trained people in technology and management skills to increase their contributions to their workplace. Many program graduates have gone on to manage and even purchase their own orchards due to the training and leadership skills they learned from this program. The WVC practical nursing program began in the late 1950’s and continues through the early 80’s as a separate program. The RN program began in 1971, after the Deaconess School of Nursing

“Apple Capital Apples” by artist Nicki Isaacson
Nicki has always been interested in art. Her grandmother in Wenatchee was an accomplished artist, but she passed away when Nicki was a toddler. Painting with watercolor was a passion she pursued only after the children were launched. Over the past 11 years, Nicki has worked hard to learn the necessary watercolor skills by taking classes from local watercolorists and attending many two-day workshops with Kay Barnes, a watercolorist from Woodinville. The 2015 painting is titled "Apple Capital Apples." There are so many varieties of apples currently, but back in the day, it was a real treat to taste a crisp, juicy Red Delicious! There is nothing more beautiful than a big, red apple hanging on a tree, a symbol of the vibrant life in our Valley and something we celebrate with our Festival every May.

Leman Johnson Award Apple Citizen of Official Program of the Apple Blossom Festival • appleblossom.org
Dennis grew up in East Wenatchee and graduated from Eastmont High School in 1961. Sharron grew up in Juneau Alaska and Seattle and graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1962. They met while at Western Washington State College and graduated in 1967. They married and moved to Wenatchee the following year. Dennis and his father Scott, opened Johnson’s Real Estate Clinic in 1968. When Scott retired, Dennis took over and re-named the company to Pacific Appraisal Associates. He joined the National Guard in 1966 and was selected as “Soldier of the Year” in 1970 and finished his time as a Sergeant. Dennis is a member of the Wenatchee Central Lions Club and is a Past President and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Throughout his business career, he has served on--and in most cases chaired--more than 15 boards and commissions, from the National Association of Realtors to Wenatchee Valley College, and spent 20 years on the Central Washington Hospital Board. In 1984, Dennis served as President of the Washington Association of Realtors and he was honored Realtor of the Year. In 2000 Dennis was elected Mayor of the City of Wenatchee. During his 12 year term, Dennis helped to facilitate a long list of projects, and one, which the Festival is most thankful for, the trademark “Apple Capital of the World”. Most recently, Dennis arranged partnership with the City of Wenatchee Police Department and NCW Foundation for Youth to repair the city's unclaimed bicycles, which were donated to the victims of the Carlton Complex fire. Sharron’s first teaching job was at Columbia Elementary School in 1968, but left to start a family five years later when their daughter Suzanne was born and son Scott soon followed. She became the librarian at Lewis and Clark Elementary in 1993 until she retired in 2007. Sharron also spent ten years working as a secretary for the First United Methodist Church, and as a substitute teacher in the Wenatchee School District. Sharron has served on the Performing Arts Center board since 2010, and was awarded for her Outstanding Service as a Volunteer in 2012 while also chairing the Festival of Trees. She is also part of the City of Wenatchee Art Commissions Advisory Group and the Women’s PEO. Together Dennis & Sharron were the recipient of the very prestigious Spirit of A.Z. Wells Award through the Central Washington Hospital Foundation in 2004. Their love for Apple Blossom has played a huge part in the Festival for the last 20 years. Dennis was Director General in 2002 and Sharron was a Royalty Chaperone in 2003-2004. To this day, they still chair the ice cream sandwich project at the end of the Youth Parade route. In addition to their 2 children, Dennis and Sharron, also have 4 grandchildren. The Johnsons will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday, Dennis & Sharron Johnson April 29 and will also ride in the Stemilt Growers Grand Parade on May 2.

The Apple Citizen of the Year award began in 1981 to honor the roots of the Festival and the leaders that make this the Apple Capital of the World. During the last 33 years he has been located at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee, and serving as Director of the Center for the last 13 years. Dr. Brunner received his BA from Willamette University (1969), and his MS (1973) and PhD (1975) from Washington State University in Entomology. Dr. Brunner’s research and education focus is in Integrated Pest Management, specializing in development of sampling methods and action thresholds, predictive models, biological control, mating disruption, and insecticide control of tree fruit pests.
